The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

3 tips for getting the most from your student planner app

In addition to finding a great app for students, these tips can help you increase your productivity and keep your schedule running smoothly. No matter which app you choose, you’ll get more out of it if you use it alongside smart planning practices.

1. Treat yourself to a semester review

At the beginning of each semester, set aside a couple of hours to prepare yourself and get everything organized in your app and in your head. Make it fun: Take yourself out for coffee, turn on your favorite music, and turn off your texting and other notifications. This is time to get in the zone.

Going to high school can be a tricky time for teenagers. Here's the advice Bec Sparrow is giving her son

"What advice did your parents give you before you started high school?" I asked my friends at a boardgames night recently.

All four of them looked at me blankly.

"You know advice, like, how to make friends or how to stay on top of your homework. Stuff like that," I prompted.

Still blank.

That's the thing; it's not that my 40-something friends couldn't remember the pearls of wisdom their parents had imparted, it's that none of us were told anything.

Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Welcome to an 1980s childhood where our parents told us almost nothing, always sided with the teacher and let us ride our bikes to friends' houses without helmets and tracking devices. 

It's also when I earnt $3 an hour babysitting the kids next door, despite not having a bachelor's degree in early childhood studies or even basic knowledge of first aid. I was however excellent at Hungry Hungry Hippos and I knew how to work their VCR, which was pretty much all you needed to know in 1986.

In 2024, we may as well be on a different planet.

My son starts high school next year and he's beginning to feel like he lives in a Ted Talk thanks to my eagerness to prepare him for what can be one of the trickiest times of adolescence: Year 7. 

On top of that, teenage schoolboys have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent years due to the harassment of female students and staff.

So, with my son starting high school in less than six months, these are the three key areas I'm focusing on when I'm talking to him.

Your friends and your feed normalise behaviours

The people we hang out with and the content we watch very quickly normalises attitudes and behaviours. 

If my son hangs out with mates who, for example, make constant sexist jokes and have sexist or misogynistic attitudes, it's likely this will rub off on him. 

The same goes with a group of kids who are regularly vaping or skipping class. Making jokes about women being stupid or belonging in the kitchen (or worse) may start off sounding shocking but very quickly becomes normalised and accepted when it's happening every day.

As he goes into high school, I want my son to be able to recognise healthy friendships that bring out his best self. We want him to like who he is when he's with his friends and we never want him to betray his own values for the sake of fitting in.

That's why I believe that teaching our boys what being a great friend looks and feels like is crucial, because it's the first step in helping them fine-tune their friendship radar. 

Hand-in-hand with that is us modelling healthy, supportive friendships at home. Our kids see us spending time with our friends, navigating a difference of opinion and showing up for each other which helps set the benchmark.

Similarly, what our kids watch online can have a brainwashing effect over time. 

I've been talking to my son about algorithms and how to click away when problematic content appears online. We've started regular discussions about porn and problematic attitudes towards women. 

My son won't be getting a smartphone next year but even on YouTube I want to make sure he's watching clips and videos from all kinds of people who inspire, entertain and uplift him.

Strong study routines will save you

The most likely reason students feel overwhelmed in high school is time management. 

So often kids go from doing little or no homework in primary school to suddenly navigating a mountain of assignments and homework from different teachers. It'd be overwhelming even for adults!

This is where strong homework habits can help save them from decision fatigue and the pain of procrastination. 

At the start of term one, we'll do what we did for our older daughter – namely setting up a term planner (either physical or digital) to keep track of due dates and set up a homework / study routine for weekdays. 

When teens know that they do homework every afternoon from 5pm – 6pm, it helps take the "Will I start my assignment today or tomorrow?" conundrum out of the equation. 

And here's a tip: Everyone tends to overestimate how long homework takes to do and underestimate the time needed to complete an assignment.

Routines include preparing the school bag the night before and checking that sports gear or music folders are ready to go. These are life skills everyone needs to learn at some point.

It also helps to develop a plan for moving smartphones out of the study area when your teen is working. Remind them that they'll work smarter and faster if they're not constantly checking messages.

And finally, there's more to life than getting straight As on a report card. In our household, we're focused on effort more than outcome.

Nothing ruins your life forever

The final piece of advice I'm imparting to my son is this: Nothing ruins your life forever. No mistake is so bad you cannot come back from it.

With their brains still developing and hard-wired for novelty and reward, it's a given that our teens are going to screw up in high school. Maybe they act up in class. Maybe they look up something they shouldn't online. Maybe they hide in the music room during the compulsory cross country (okay, that was me).

We might not like what our child has done, but we can walk beside them and love them as they deal with the consequences. In 2024, it's disturbingly easy to make a bad judgement call that becomes very public, and it's easy for our kids to feel like there is no way back from public humiliation.

And it's sobering to realise that suicide is the leading cause of death in people aged 15-24 and that males make up 75 per cent of all suicides .

In our household, we stress the message that nothing ruins your life forever. My husband and I routinely share our mistakes and mess-ups to normalise failures.

And we are working hard to create an environment where all our kids will think "We have to tell mum and dad" rather than "Mum and dad can never find out" when they screw up.
