In the past decades, the unprecedented number of women in entrepreneurship has been overwhelmingly increasing. This was fueled by their motivation to earn independently and to uplift their economic condition. This paper magnified the stories of success and failures of women micro entrepreneurs in managing their ‘sari-sari’ stores. Informants of this multiple case study were five women micro-entrepreneurs who had been in business for at least five years. An in-depth interview was done and cross case analysis was employed. Results revealed that new investments, enhanced family income, productivity, and resourcefulness were the stories that they highlighted as success. On the stories of failures, they emphasized that business breakdowns and personal crisis once confronted their operation. They also revealed that failures framed them to be determined, faithful, diligent, and optimistic. Lastly, they shared significant insights that women entrepreneurs must be business oriented, develop people skills, and employ a strong will power. These women entrepreneurs have their own way of defining moments relative to success and failures in micro entrepreneurship. What is worth noting is the fact that the innumerable failures which confronted them shaped the entrepreneurial traits they now possessed and achieved the optimum success in their entrepreneurial journey.

This paper has a twofold purpose. First, to argue that a combined research of the market and meaning spheres clarifies the modus operandi of large processed food corporations in slums. In the market sphere occurs the trade of commodities expecting a physical or objective consumption; in the meaning sphere, the subjective experiences of retailers and consumers can be expressed in symbols, referents, codes, identities, emotions, etc. Second, to show the results of a qualitative research of Filipino Sari-Sari stores’ meanings about corporate packaged food (CPF); four categories of meaning were found: sales-related, business facilitation, favorable attributes, and unfavorable attributes of CPF. The findings can be further compared by scholars or professionals studying CPF or intervening in slums.

Studies have demonstrated links between the accessibility of food and multiple health outcomes. Policymakers engaged in local community development may use public health concerns as a strategy to procure funding for food retail initiatives. Few studies to date have demonstrated the impact that a new food retailer can have on geographic and economic access to nutritious food in a community, evidence which could support the case for new food retail. This paper examines the price and availability of food before and after the opening of two new grocery stores in a former food desert in Flint, Michigan. The results indicate a substantial improvement in both geographic and economic food accessibility, and show no statistical difference between prices at average grocery stores and the new stores. Discussion suggests that investment in poorer neighborhoods can be beneficial to the local population and the community at large by creating a local multiplier effect through increased spending in the community.

Accounting plays an important role in business decision-making transactions. This study looks at all the problems faced by the sari-sari store and the need for proper bookkeeping and basic accounting procedure in the sari-sari store. Primary data were obtained from the respondents through questionnaires, and secondary data was obtained from textbooks, the internet, and journals. The total sample comprised 108 respondents from different barangays of the municipality of Nasipit, Agusan del Norte. The study found that most of the sari-sari store entrepreneurs in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte have nothing to do with accounting practices because sari-sari store entrepreneurs do not practice recording their accounts. The researchers recommended that the owner be educated to keep away their transactions from their business entities. The local government should be toughened and resourced to solve these numerous problems of the sari-sari store. The study identified the perception of accounting literacy on the profitability of the sari-sari store and its challenges. It came out with ways and means which will substantiate and sustain the growth of the sari-sari store.
