Advancing dreams and degrees: osu’s mcnair program guides students to ph.d. success.

Navigating the higher education landscape can be challenging for first-generation and low-income students, but the McNair Scholars Program at Oklahoma State University is a guiding light for many students.  The program provides clear guidance, empowering these students to not only succeed in their undergraduate studies but also to envision and achieve the dream of earning an advanced degree.

Established in 1989 by the U.S. Department of Education, the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, aka the McNair Scholars Program, was created to help first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students pursue post-graduate degrees.

Before applying for its inaugural McNair Scholars Program grant, OSU's Division of Access and Community Impact conducted focus groups and surveys to evaluate the institution's demand for the program and its potential benefits for undergraduates aspiring to graduate school.

“We went after this particular grant because we recognized that when we looked at the numbers, roughly 30% of students here are first-generation,” said Dr. Clyde Wilson, associate vice president for access and community impact. “Then, when you couple that with low income, we recognize that there's a great need for us to build on the land-grant mission of creating access and opportunity for all.”

OSU became fully funded with its first McNair Scholars Program grant in 2017 and since then has served 74 students. Now, in the second five-year grant cycle, OSU is among the 216 institutions nationwide offering McNair programs.

Wilson and his team focus on recruiting ambitious students and supporting them in their academic journey.  “Each institution that has a McNair Program has to be able to show that there is a need for the program to even be in existence at their institution,” Wilson said. “We as a program, while we serve 25 students a year, two-thirds of those students must identify as first-generation or low income, and then one-third of the students can show up as just underrepresented.”

Faculty members have rallied around this program to determine how to instill confidence in students, empowering them to view themselves as impactful scientists and researchers in any chosen field. Leveraging the DOE’s resources, the McNair Program bridges existing faculty-student engagement efforts, enhancing mentorship experiences and equipping students to effectively present themselves for graduate school opportunities across the United States.

OSU’s first McNair Scholars are now completing their advanced degrees and reflecting on how the program has changed their lives.

Lacey (Gotcher) Robinson always knew she wanted to pursue a graduate degree in some fashion.

Originally from California, Robinson spent most of her childhood in Oklahoma. She was familiar with OSU’s campus and loved the Cowboy culture. In 2015, she began her undergraduate career at OSU studying chemistry.

A first-generation student, she secured a research job on campus but was still seeking out scholarship opportunities when she learned of the McNair Program.

Robinson learned that the program would support her through sponsored graduate school visits and preparation, personalized mentoring from campus professors, scholarships and financial aid assistance, and much more.

a headshot of a caucasian female wearing a suit

“At that time, I was considering either doing a Ph.D. in chemistry or going to pharmacy school,” Robinson said. “Both required four years of graduate level education and the McNair Program helped me figure out which direction I wanted to go to. They gave me the financial support to go to many on-site interviews at both Ph.D. and pharmacy schools.”

Robinson graduated from OSU with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 2019 and then started a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Houston, which she completed in 2023.

Visiting the University of Alabama — fully funded by the McNair Program — became a core memory for Robinson that helped her decide her future path.

"I remember, it was cool that we got to go visit quite a few schools,” Robinson said. “Other universities would invite Ph.D. candidates to come and check out their school and consider applying, and I got to see some nice schools that I wasn't considering without a visit.”

This year, the scholars will visit North Carolina State University. To Wilson, McNair Scholars must experience campuses outside of Oklahoma and the surrounding states to potentially find the best fit for their academic and personal goals, leading to a richer and more fulfilling graduate school experience.

“We'll go and meet with the graduate school representatives, to then talk about the different graduate programs and allow them to talk to faculty and current graduate students about their experiences,” Wilson said. “They will discuss funding opportunities and offer you the chance to speak with current graduate students at various stages of their journey. It's crucial to hear perspectives not just from faculty or the  administration, but from those who are living the experience.”

The program helped Robinson tour prestigious institutions, and program leaders taught her how to present her research at conferences and prepare it for publication — something she continues today while in pursuit of a Master’s degree in pharmacy administration and leadership.

"It was great to have that head start before pharmacy school because I still do research, and I'm writing a publication right now,” Robinson said. “I’ve used those skills that I learned back when I was a junior in college over the past five years.”

Robinson currently works at Memorial Hermann Health System as a health systems pharmacy administration and leadership resident. Being part of the McNair program is an experience that opened many doors for Robinson and she hopes it does the same for future students.

For students considering applying to the McNair program and furthering their education, Robinson had some words of advice.

“It's a long road,” Robinson said. “Do all your research and try things you've never done before and see how you like them, because you never know what you might end up doing one day.

“One of the reasons why I applied to the McNair program is because any opportunity there was available, I jumped at it. I just wanted to see everything they could offer me and try it because you never know what you're going to like until you try it.”

Zackary Alegria is a fourth-year graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in experimental high-energy physics at OSU, but there was a point when the thought of attending college was merely a thought.

zack stands infront of the ATLAS detector

Alegria began his education at OSU in 2016, dual majoring in mathematics and physics through the McNair Program. When he graduated in 2019, he elected to continue his education and was supported through the McNair Fellowship.

The Division of Access and Community Impact funds a three-credit summer course where faculty share their undergraduate mentorship experiences, helping students see they belong and are not alone. The program partners with entities across campus and leverages technology to ensure students become effective researchers.

“I always had the intentions of getting a Ph.D. and ending up working in a university setting, but it was kind of a struggle just to get to college,” Alegria said. “Then navigating life after undergrad and figuring out what the grad school process is like and how to get in everything is a whole other ordeal.

“The McNair program provides an opportunity to encourage you to get into research to prepare you for the process of applying to grad school; what does a graduate application look like? What makes a grad application look good? And not just like you threw something together right before a deadline.”

Alegria started researching experimental particle physics during his undergraduate career and discovered he enjoyed it. He wanted to continue research and teach in an academic setting as a professor. Despite his success, he was no stranger to imposter syndrome and knew other students experienced the same feelings.

"Being from that first-generation, low-income background, I know it's very difficult as an undergrad to figure out how to navigate this setting without some support,” Alegria said. “I always hoped that if I wasn't a professor, I could help students who didn't have that background structure, to say this is what you need to do to be successful in college. This is how you get involved with research. Just serve as a resource for people who are like me, new to this whole ordeal.”

Outside of research, McNair Scholars engage in professional social experiences, like visits to museums, art galleries, and prestigious conferences. Weekly activities teach practical skills to help students feel comfortable and confident in new settings.

“One of the biggest challenges is just imposter syndrome, and I think that's the biggest thing,” Alegria said. “I imagine a lot of students in the McNair program or that are considering being a part of the McNair program, feel like they don't belong in the university setting, just given their different backgrounds from most individuals here. So, having those resources of a group that says, ‘You do belong here. You can achieve your goals and see this through,’ definitely helps you overcome that impostor syndrome and feeling like you're an outsider trying to get into the cool kids’ group.”

Research at OSU opened Alegria to new opportunities. Growing up in Garden City, Kansas, Alegria never traveled much outside of Kansas and Oklahoma. However, he was able to travel internationally to Geneva, Switzerland, and participated in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) which was an unforgettable experience.

Alegria wants to continue conducting physics research after he graduates but also keeps the door open to teaching the next generation.

“I hope it's been clear that this opportunity for me as an undergrad, and as a grad student has been supported by the McNair program, helping me to get there,” Alegria said. “It's hard to quantify the impact they've had in this. There's been many things that have impacted me getting to this point. My department and research group have been a major supporter, the McNair Program has been major support, and even Oklahoma State is a great support in getting me to this point.

“I would like to emphasize for any future McNair Scholar or current scholars who are considering postgraduate studies, it's a long road, but it's well worth it so just keep persevering. You've made it to this point and been able to overcome challenges in your life. Don't stop now.”

83 years later, 105-year-old finally earns master's from Stanford

Virginia Hislop has spent a lifetime trying to increase access to education, and now, at 105 years old, she appears to have completed her own schooling.

On Sunday, Hislop celebrated Stanford University's conference of a master of art's degree in education — 83 years after having left campus just shy of the degree. Her son-in-law had contacted the institution and discovered a final thesis, her unfulfilled obligation, was no longer required.

“I’ve been doing this work for years and it’s nice to be recognized with this degree,” Hislop told Stanford for a story about her nearly lifelong journey to a stage on campus , where a diploma in a Cardinal-red cover was placed in her hand.

In 1941, on the eve of the United States' direct involvement in World War II, and as her fiance was preparing to be called to serve, Hislop skipped out on the thesis.

Her Stanford days, starting in 1936, were nonetheless fruitful, and she earned an undergraduate education degree before moving directly to postgraduate studies.

She wanted to go to law school, Hislop has said, but her father wouldn't pay for it, so she opted for the briefer time required for teaching.

Hislop had completed coursework for a master's and needed only to turn in the final version of her thesis, she has said. Instead, she told NBC Bay Area, she skipped town and had a honeymoon in Oklahoma near her husband's Army post at Fort Sill.

"Not my idea of a place for a honeymoon," she told the station, "but I had no choice in the matter."

At the time, such a sacrifice — trading her career for marriage and a future family — was seen as a way to support the war effort. It was a sacrifice for America.

She had grown up in Los Angeles, but after the war the California girl found herself with husband George in Yakima, Washington, where George took part in the family business of ranching.

They raised two children, which put Hislop's focus on a passion stoked during her days in Palo Alto: education.

"I didn’t return to teaching, but I feel I put my teaching certificate to good use serving in committees and on boards and trying to improve the educational opportunities every chance I got," she told the Yakima Herald-Republic in 2018.

She opposed middle school curricula that required home economics but not advanced English for her daughter, so she ran for the Yakima School District Board of Directors and won, according to the publication.

Hislop also successfully lobbied for independent community college districts in Washington state at a time when Yakima's two-year college was under the otherwise K-12 district.

She was eventually recruited to raise funds for what would become Heritage University, a women-founded, women-led institution about 20 miles south of Yakima.

She launched the school's annual Bounty of the Valley Scholarship Dinner, which by 2018 had raised nearly $6 million to help students attend the institution. Hislop is listed by the school as a board member emerita.

At Pacific Northwest University, a medical and health sciences school in Yakima, a scholarship, the Virginia Hislop Emergency Fund , bares her name.

Her interest in broad access to education may have been inspired by an aunt who was the principal of a public school in West Los Angeles' Sawtelle Japantown neighborhood when Hislop grew up in L.A.

Sawtelle is an area originally anchored by a housing and care facility for disabled veterans of the Civil War, but it evolved into a community populated by Japanese Americans and Latinos.

Hislop said she was moved by her aunt’s experience seeing education change lives on L.A.’s Westside, according to the Yakima Herald-Republic.

“Aunt Nora would tell us about some of the Hispanic students in her school and how they were doing and the difference that education made for them,” she told the publication. “It seemed to me that without an education, your future was limited and with an education it was unlimited.”

Her new degree is punctuation for a life spent advocating for public education for the masses.

On Sunday, Daniel Schwartz, dean of Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, handed Hislop her master’s diploma with a broad smile, describing her as “a fierce advocate for equity and the opportunity to learn."

UD students share the benefits of their 4+1 experiences

The math is simple: Earning an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in just five years instead of six saves students time and financial resources.

The University of Delaware offers 40 of these accelerated degree pathways, also known as 4+1 programs , including 15 that are being added in fall 2024. Students interested in enrolling in a 4+1 program are encouraged to consult with their academic advisors.

“The 4+1 programs provide a wonderful opportunity for students to obtain the advanced credentials they need to be successful in their future careers,” said Louis Rossi, dean of the Graduate College and vice provost for graduate and professional education. “By expanding our 4+1 programs and infusing the curriculum with advanced and specialized knowledge and unique experiences, we solidify our commitment to supporting students at every stage of their UD journey. Students who hold these degrees will find they have access to a broader range of career opportunities in industry and the public sectors.”

Having a master’s degree is a significant benefit for many job seekers. Graduate coursework provides students with hands-on experience in applying the knowledge they gained in their undergraduate courses.

Noah Stiebritz graduated this spring with a master’s of science in robotics after earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering last year. While applying for roles that meet his career aspirations, he has found that many positions require a master’s degree.

Noah Stiebritz, a robotics 4+1 graduate, gained experience with accurately manipulating robotic models while in graduate school.

Stiebritz hopes to create robotic prosthetics or robotic equipment used during surgical procedures. He gained experience with accurately manipulating robotic models while in graduate school.

“The introduction to robotics class focuses on modeling the motions, joints and applied force of a robot,” Stiebritz said. “The final project focused on the mathematical calculations — some learned in undergraduate courses — for the trajectory of a robotic arm. We had to place an object in a specific position with less than a millimeter difference in each direction.”

Putting to use abstract concepts learned at the undergraduate level has also been a highlight for Leah Marsh, a 4+1 student who earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and graduated this spring with a master’s of science in fashion in apparel studies.

Fashion and merchandising students inspect samples of handmade jewelry from the Masai women of Kenya, for whom students will help develop marketing plans for their businesses.

She described her experience as a productive and purposeful way to spend the year between finishing undergrad and starting her career. Marsh shared encouraging words for interested students: “It’s all the things that you’ve already learned,” she said. “Don’t be afraid.”

Marsh added that continuing her education allowed her a chance to make more informed decisions about her future. It gave her the courage to slow down, use her time wisely and network.

Last summer she had an internship at a nonprofit organization that focuses on supply chain transparency and garment worker’s rights. Marsh was offered a role with the company and will start shortly after graduation.

105-year-old dons cap and gown, receives overdue degree from Stanford University

Updated on: June 17, 2024 / 2:26 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

STANFORD -- At age 105, Virginia Hislop has lived a full life with two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She has devoted much of her life to education and has served on school and college boards in central Washington, where she lives.

Despite her success, she says something was missing.

"From time to time, I wished I had finished and gotten my master's (degree)," Hislop said. "Part of it was the fact that I've been a college director for a good number of years and I didn't have the advanced degree that some of the other ones did."

Hislop had taken the required classes at Stanford University but had not yet submitted a master's thesis when the U.S. entered World War II in 1941.

"The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor," Hislop explained.

She quickly married her college sweetheart before his Army deployment. She assisted in the war effort then focused on her family but never finished her thesis.

Virginia Hislop

"Fast-forward 83 years -- we don't have a thesis requirement anymore so she's actually satisfied the requirements for Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Education," said Daniel Schwartz, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education. "So, 83 years later, we're honoring this woman who has done so much."

Sunday afternoon at the education department's commencement ceremony, fellow graduates and Hislop's family, many of whom live in the Bay Area, gave her a standing ovation as she walked onto the stage with a little support from her cane.

"So much gratitude. She's believed in all of us and cheered us on all the way through and we get to cheer her on now. It's pretty cool," said Elizabeth Jensen, Hislop's granddaughter. "I feel like this is the crowning glory of her amazing career. This is her lifetime achievement award."

Hislop received her master's academic hoop and her diploma.

"Very satisfied, very pleased," Hislop beamed.

She was quick to remind people it's never too late to get a college degree. And this one added one more highlight to her many accomplishments.

When asked what she'd do with the diploma, she smiled.

"Add it to the others I have in the basement," she said.

  • Videos shared online showed passengers fanning themselves and one shirtless man covered in sweat.

Insider Today

Dozens of passengers were filmed struggling with the heat when their flight was stuck on the tarmac.

Qatar Airways flight 204 was delayed in Athens on Monday, when temperatures reached 95 degrees.

Those on board included athletes returning home from a Muay Thai competition in the Greek capital.

A reporter from the Thai newspaper Matichon , who said they were on the Boeing 777 , reported that the air conditioning malfunctioned.

Over the next three hours, passengers began sweating and taking off their clothes, the report added.

A sports therapist shared videos  of the turmoil on Instagram, showing uncomfortable passengers fanning themselves to cool down.

"Passengers were literally dehydrating and passing out on the plane," he wrote. "Damian [a man featured in one of the videos] is a fit, conditioned athlete, imagine the stress and danger for any normal individual."

Other images obtained by The Sun showed a shirtless man covered in beads of sweat.

It reported that passengers were let off the plane after three hours. The flight landed in Doha on Tuesday morning, 16 hours later than scheduled, per data from Flightradar24.

The heat wave in Athens has seen the Acropolis closed for five hours, schools shut, and garbage collection also halted, with temperatures forecast to reach 102 degrees. Monday's incident highlights how the climate crisis, causing more frequent heat waves, could pose problems for airlines and passengers.

"Qatar Airways sincerely apologizes for the delay to passengers traveling on flight QR204 from Athens (ATH) to Doha (DOH) on Monday 10 June 2024, which was due to a technical issue," an airline spokesperson said in a statement shared with Business Insider.

They said passengers were asked to deplane and were supported by Qatar staff while the problem was fixed. In Doha, "we extended our full support to all affected passengers upon arrival to ensure smooth onward connections to their final destination," they added.

"We regard the safety and comfort of our passengers and crew as our highest priority at all times, and have offered our apologies to each passenger affected by this unforeseen disruption and the inconvenience caused," they said.

"Additionally, passengers have been informed of their compensation entitlements in line with the applicable regulations."

1993 how the construction company remstroy was created   the year 1993 was a period when a lot of construction companies, which had been working successfully during the soviet times and had rich staff capacity, were forced to cease their activity for various reasons. a lot of capable specialists either had to look for another job or change their field. but there were also those who were willing to realise their potential in the field of construction in accordance with the received degree and the experience they had accumulated. thus, in 1993 in elektrostal (moscow oblast) a group of specialists and people sharing each other’s ideas, who had enormous educational background and the highest degree in architecture, organized and registered ooo firm erg which began its rapid development and successful work, offering its service both on the construction market and other areas. 2000 industrial construction is the main area   seven years of successful work have shown that combining different types of activities in the same company is not always convenient. and in the year 2000 the founders of ooo firm erg decided to create and register a monoprofile construction company ooo remstroy construction company. industrial construction was chosen as the priority area. it was in this area that the directors of ooo sk remstroy began their working life and grew as specialists. in order to achieve the set goal, they selected a mobile team of professionals in the field of industrial construction, which allows us to cope with the tasks assigned to ooo sk remstroy throughout russia and the near abroad. 2010 manufacturing of metal structures   we possess modern equipment that allows us to carry out the entire cycle of works on the manufacture of metal structures of any complexity without assistance. designing – production – installation of metal structures. a staff of professionals and well-coordinated interaction of the departments let us carry out the work as soon as possible and in accordance with all customer’s requirements.” extract from the list of members of self-regulatory organizations, construction.
