speech closing lines

While speech openings are definitely one of the most important components of a speech, something that is equally as important is the way you conclude your speech.

There are few worse ways to end your speech than with a terse ‘thank you’–no elaboration or addition whatsoever.

Speech endings are just as crucial to the success of your speech as speech openings, and you must spend just as much time picking the perfect ending as you do to determine your best possible speech opening.

The words you speak at the beginning and end of your speech are words that your audience will pay the most attention to, and remember longer than any other part of your speech.

Speech endings can put even the most experienced speaker in flux, and increase their anxiousness manifold as they sit there attempting to figure out the perfect way to end your speech.

If you’re someone who’s in flux about your speech ending too, don’t worry. We’ve got some amazing ways to conclude your speech with a bang!

1. Circling Back To The Beginning

The idea behind circling back to the beginning of your speech is to reinforce the idea of your speech being a complete whole. By circling back to the beginning and connecting it to your ending, you let the audience understand that the idea of your speech is complete & standalone.

Circling back to the beginning of your speech also acts as an excellent way of reinforcing the central idea of your speech in the audience’s mind, and makes it more likely that they will remember it after the speech ends.

How To Circle Back To The Beginning

The easiest way to do this is to set up your beginning for the conclusion of your speech. That is, if you’re saying something like, say, a story or joke in the beginning, then you can leave your audience in a cliffhanger until the ending arrives.

Another great way to circle back to the beginning is by simply restating something you said at the start. The added knowledge from attending the rest of your speech will help the audience see this piece of information in a new–and better–light.

1. Will Stephen

Ending Line: “I’d like you to think about what you heard in the beginning, and I want you to think about what you hear now. Because it was nothing & it’s still nothing.”

2. Canwen Xu

Speech Ending: My name is Canwen, my favorite color is purple and I play the piano but not so much the violin…

Think of a memorable moment from your life, and chances are you’ll realize that it involved a feeling of happiness–something that we can associate with smiling or laughter. And what better way to generate laughter than by incorporating the age-old strategy of good humor.

The happy and lighthearted feeling you associate with good memories is the kind of emotional reaction you want to create in your audience too. That’s what will make your speech stick in their memory.

Done incorrectly, humor can be a disaster. Done right, however, it can entirely transform a speech.

Humor doesn’t only mean slapstick comedy (although there’s nothing wrong with slapstick, either). Humor can come in many forms, including puns, jokes, a funny story…the list is endless.

How To Incorporate Humor In Your Speech Ending

The simplest way to incorporate humor into your speech ending is by telling a plain old joke–something that’s relevant to your topic, of course.

You can also tell them a short, funny anecdote–may be an unexpected conclusion to a story you set up in the beginning.

Another way would be by employing the power of repetition. You can do this by associating something funny with a word, and then repeating the word throughout your speech. During the end, simply say the word or phrase one last time, and it’s likely you’ll leave off your audience with a good chuckle.

1. Woody Roseland

Ending Line: “Why are balloons so expensive? Inflation.”

2. Andras Arato

Ending Line: “There are three rules to becoming famous. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are.”

3. Hasan Minhaj

Ending Line: “And you want to know the scariest part? Pretty soon every country on the earth is going to have its own TLC show.”

4. Sophie Scott

Speech Ending: In other words, when it comes to laughter, you and me baby, ain’t nothing but mammals.

5. Tim Urban

Speech Ending: We need to stay away from the Instant Gratification Monkey. That’s a job for all of us. And because there’s not that many boxes on there. It’s a job that should probably start today. Well, maybe not today, but, you know, sometime soon.

6. Hasan Minhaj

Speech Ending: Showing my legs on TV is probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done. And keep in mind last week I went after the Prince of Saudi Arabia.

3. Question

The idea behind posing a question at the end of your speech is to get the wheels in your audience’s minds turning and to get them thinking of your speech long after it has ended. A question, if posed correctly, will make your audience re-think about crucial aspects of your speech, and is a great way to prompt discussion after your speech has ended.

How To Add Questions To Your Speech Ending

The best type of questions to add to your speech ending is rhetorical questions. That’s because, unlike a literal question, a rhetorical question will get the audience thinking and make them delve deeper into the topic at hand.

Make sure your question is central to the idea of your speech, and not something frivolous or extra. After all, the point of a question is to reinforce the central idea of your topic.

1. Lexie Alford

Speech Ending: Ask yourself: How uncomfortable are you willing to become in order to reach your fullest potential?

2. Apollo Robbins

Speech Ending: If you could control somebody’s attention, what would you do with it?

Quotes are concise, catchy phrases or sentences that are generally easy to remember and repeat.

Quotes are an age-old way to start–and conclude–a speech. And for good reason.

Quotes can reinforce your own ideas by providing a second voice to back them up. They can also provoke an audience’s mind & get them thinking. So, if you add your quote to the end of your speech, the audience will most likely be thinking about it for long after you have finished speaking.

How To Use Quotes In Your Speech Ending

While adding quotes to your speech ending, make sure that it’s relevant to your topic. Preferably, you want to pick a quote that summarizes your entire idea in a concise & memorable manner.

Make sure that your quote isn’t too long or complicated. Your audience should be able to repeat it as well as feel its impact themselves. They shouldn’t be puzzling over the semantics of your quote, but its intended meaning.

1. Edouard Jacqmin

Speech Ending: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

2. Chris Crowe

Speech Ending: “It’s more certain than death and taxes.”

3. Olivia Remes

Speech Ending: I’d like to leave you with a quote by Martin Luther King: “You don’ have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.”

4. Tomislav Perko

Speech Ending: Like that famous quote says, “In twenty years from now on, you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did do.

5. Diana Nyad

Speech Ending: To paraphrase the poet, Mary Oliver, she says, “So, what is it? What is it you’re doing with this one wild and precious life of yours?”

5. Piece Of Advice

The point of giving a piece of advice at the end of your speech is not to pull your audience down or to make them feel bad/inferior about themselves. Rather, the advice is added to motivate your audience to take steps to do something–something related to the topic at hand.

The key point to remember is that your advice is included to help your audience, not to discourage them.

How To Add Piece Of Advice To Your Speech Ending

To truly make your audience follow the advice you’re sharing, you must make sure it resonates with them. To do so, you need to inject emotions into your advice, and to present it in such a manner that your audience’s emotions are aroused when they hear it.

Your advice shouldn’t be something extra-complicated or seemingly impossible to achieve. This will act as a counter-agent. Remember that you want your audience to follow your advice, not to chuck it away as something impossible.

Our article, 15 Powerful Speech Ending Lines And Tips To Create Your Own , is another great repository for some inspiration.

6. Iskra Lawrence

Speech Ending: Speak to your body in a loving way. It’s the only one you got, it’s your home, and it deserves your respect. If you see anyone tearing themselves down, build them back up And watch your life positively grow when you give up the pursuit of perfection.

6. Contemplative Remark

As the name itself suggests, contemplative remarks are intended to make your audience contemplate or mull over something. The ‘something’ in question should be the idea central to your speech, or a key takeaway that you want them to return home with.

The idea is to get your audience thinking and to keep them thinking for a long, long time.

How To Add A Contemplative Remark To Your Speech Ending

To add a contemplative remark to your speech ending, you first need to figure out your key takeaway or main theme. Then, you want to arrange that as a question, and propose it to your audience at the end of your speech.

Remember that your question shouldn’t be something too wordy or complicated to understand. As with the quotes, you don’t want your audience stuck on the semantics. Rather, you want them to focus on the matter at hand.

1. Lisa Penney

Speech Ending: “So I invite you to pay more attention to your thoughts & consider the legacy you leave behind.”

2. Grant Sanderson

Speech Ending: “Some of the most useful math that you can find or teach has its origin in someone who was just looking for a good story.”

5. Robert Hoge

Speech Ending: Choose to accept your face, choose to appreciate your face, don’t look away from the mirror so quickly; understand all the love, and the life, and the pain that is the part of your face, that is the art of your face. Tomorrow when you wake up, what will your choice be?

7. Personal Anecdote

Personal anecdotes, as the name suggests, are anecdotes that are personal to the speaker or instances from their life. Personal anecdotes are a great way to incorporate the magical powers of storytelling in your speech, as well as to make a personal connection with the audience. Using personal anecdotes, you can hit two birds with one stone!

How To Add Personal Anecdotes To Your Speech Ending

To add personal anecdotes to your speech ending, you need to filter through your life experiences to find out ones that directly relate to your topic at hand. You don’t want to include an anecdote, no matter how compelling it is, if it doesn’t relate to your topic.

Remember to not keep your anecdote too long. Your audience will most likely lose their attention if you do so.

1. Sheila Humphries

Speech Ending: “Why do you go work for these people?” My answer to them was, “If I could help one child make it in this world, it’ll be worth it all.”

8. Call To Action

A call-to-action is one of the absolute best ways to conclude a speech with a bang. A well-written speech should aim to alter the audience’s mind or belief system in some way and to make them take an action in that direction. One crucial way to assure your audience does this is by using a call to action.

How To Add A Call To Action To Your Speech Ending

A call to action comes right before the ending of your speech to provide your audience with a clear idea or set of instructions about what they’re supposed to do after your talk ends.

A call to action should provide a roadmap to the audience for their future steps, and to outline clearly what those future steps are going to be.

1. Armin Hamrah

Speech Ending: “So tonight, after you finish your Math homework & before you lay your head down on that fluffy pillow, bring a piece of paper and pen by your bedside…”

Speech Ending: “So I invite you to get your drawings out there & spread the word that when we draw, we remember more!”

3. Andy Puddicombe

Speech Ending: You don’t have to burn any incense, and you definitely don’t have to sit on the floor. 4. Amy Cuddy

Speech Ending: Before you go into the next stressful evaluative situation, for two minutes, try doing this in the elevator…

5. Jia Jiang

Speech Ending: When you are facing the next obstacle or the next failure, consider the possibilities. Don’t run! If you just embrace them, they might become your gifts as well.

9. Motivational Remark

As the name clearly explains, a motivational remark motivates your audience to carry out a plan of action. It ruffles the audience’s mind and emotions and has a powerful impact on the steps that your audience will take after you’ve finished speaking.

How To Add A Motivational Remark To Your Speech Ending

The key to a good motivational remark is to inspire your audience. Your motivational remark should act as a ray of hope to your audience and positively inspire them to take a desired course of action.

Your motivational remark should not be negative in any way. You don’t want to guilt or coerce your audience into doing something or feeling a certain way. You want to leave them on a positive note to move forward with their life.

1. Khanh Vy Tran

Speech Ending: “Anyone can learn to be funnier. And it all starts with a choice. A choice to try to find ways to use humor. A choice to be like my grandmother, to look at the world around you and say WTF–wow, that’s fun.”

4. Laura Vanderkam

Speech Ending: There is time. Even if we are busy, we have time for what matters. And when we focus on what matters, we can build the lives we want in the time we’ve got.

5. Julian Treasure

Speech Ending: Let’s get listening taught in schools, and transform the world in one generation into a conscious listening world, a world of connection, a world of understanding, and a world of peace.

6. Mariana Atencio

Speech Ending: Let’s celebrate those imperfections that make us special. I hope that it teaches you that nobody has a claim on the word ‘normal’. We are all different. We are all quirky and unique and that is what makes us wonderfully human.

10. Challenge

Much like a call to action, the aim of proposing a challenge at the end of your speech is to instigate your audience to take some desired course of action. A challenge should make an appeal to your audience’s emotion, and motivate them to meet it.

How To Add A Challenge To Your Speech Ending

To apply a challenge effectively to your speech ending, you need to make sure that it’s something relevant to your topic. Your challenge should drive the central topic of your speech forward, and make your audience engage in real-life steps to apply your idea in the real world.

While its always a good idea to set a high bar for your challenge, make sure its an achievable one too.

1. Jamak Golshani

Speech Ending: “I challenge you to open your heart to new possibilities, choose a career path that excites you & one that’s aligned to who you truly are.”

2. Ashley Clift-Jennings

Speech Ending: So, my challenge to you today is, “Do you know, would you even know how to recognize your soulmate?” If you are going out in the world right now, would you know what you are looking for?

11. Metaphor

Metaphors are commonly used as a short phrase that draws a comparison between two ideas in a non-literal sense. People use metaphors quite commonly in daily life to explain ideas that might be too difficult or confusing to understand otherwise. Metaphors are also great tools to be used in speech, as they can present your main idea in a simple and memorable way.

How To Add Metaphors To Your Speech Ending

To add a metaphor to your speech ending, you need to first decide on the main idea or takeaway of your speech. Your metaphor should then be organized in such a way that it simplifies your main idea and makes it easier for your audience to understand & remember it.

The key is to not make your metaphor overly complicated or difficult to retain and share. Remember that you’re trying to simplify your idea for the audience–not make them even more confused.

1. Ramona J. Smith

Speech Ending: “Stay in that ring. And even after you take a few hits, use what you learned from those previous fights, and at the end of the round, you’ll still remain standing.”

2. Shi Heng YI

Speech Ending: “If any of you chooses to climb that path to clarity, I will be very happy to meet you at the peak.”

3. Zifang “Sherrie” Su

Speech Ending: “Are you turning your back on your fear? Our life is like this stage, but what scares are now may bring you the most beautiful thing. Give it a chance.”

12. Storytelling

The idea behind using stories to end your speech is to leave your audience with a good memory to take away with them.

Stories are catchy, resonating & memorable ways to end any speech.

Human beings can easily relate to stories. This is because most people have grown up listening to stories of some kind or another, and thus a good story tends to evoke fond feelings in us.

How To Incorporate Stories In Your Speech Ending

A great way to incorporate stories in your speech ending is by setting up a story in the beginning and then concluding it during the end of your speech.

Another great way would be to tell a short & funny anecdote related to a personal experience or simply something related to the topic at hand.

However, remember that it’s the ending of your speech. Your audience is most likely at the end of their attention span. So, keep your story short & sweet.

1. Sameer Al Jaberi

Speech Ending: “I can still see that day when I came back from my honeymoon…”

2. Josephine Lee

Speech Ending: “At the end of dinner, Jenna turned to me and said…”

Facts are another excellent speech ending, and they are used quite often as openings as well. The point of adding a fact as your speech ending is to add shock value to your speech, and to get your audience thinking & discussing the fact even after your speech has ended.

How To Add Facts To Your Speech Ending

The key to adding facts to your speech ending is to pick a fact that thrusts forward your main idea in the most concise form possible. Your fact should also be something that adds shock value to the speech, and it should ideally be something that the audience hasn’t heard before.

Make sure that your fact is relevant to the topic at hand. No matter how interesting, a fact that doesn’t relate to your topic is going to be redundant.

1. David JP Phillips

Speech Ending: 3500 years ago, we started transfering knowledge from generation to generation through text. 28 years ago, PowerPoint was born. Which one do you think our brain is mostly adapted to?

14. Rhethoric Remark

Rhetoric remarks are another excellent way to get the wheels of your audience’s minds turning. Rhetoric remarks make your audience think of an imagined scenario, and to delve deeper into your topic. Rhetoric remarks or questioned don’t necessarily need to have a ‘right’ or one-shot answer, which means you can be as creative with them as possible!

How To Add Rhethoric Remarks To Your Speech Ending

Since rhetorical questions don’t need to have a definite answer, you have much freedom in determining the type of question or statement you wish to make. However, as with all other speech endings, a rhetorical question shouldn’t be asked just for the sake of it.

A rhetorical question should make your audience think about your topic in a new or more creative manner. It should get them thinking about the topic and maybe see it from an angle that they hadn’t before.

Rhetorical questions shouldn’t be too confusing. Use simple language & make sure it’s something that the audience can easily comprehend.

1. Mona Patel

Speech Ending: Pick your problem, ask “What if?” Come up with ideas. Bring them down. Then execute on them. Maybe you’re thinking, “What if we can’t?” I say to you, “What if we don’t?”

2. Lizzie Velasquez

Speech Ending: I want you to leave here and ask yourself what defines you. But remember: Brave starts here.

Another great way to end your speech with a literal bang is by using music! After all, if there’s something that can impact the human mind with just as much force as a few well-placed words, it’s the correct music.

How To Add Music To Your Speech Ending

To add music to your speech ending, you must make sure that the music has something to do with your speech theme. Remember that you’re not playing music in your concert. The piece of music that you choose must be relevant to your topic & work to have a contribution in your overall speech.

1. Tom Thum

Speech Ending: *ends the TED Talk with beat boxing*

16. Reitirate The Title

The title of your speech is its most important component. That’s why you need to pay careful attention to how you pick it, as it is something that your viewers will most likely remember the longest about your speech.

Your title will also act as a guiding hand towards how your audience forms an initial idea about your speech and is what they will associate your entire speech with.

By repeating your title at the end of your speech, you increase the chances that your audience will remember it–and your speech–for a long time.

How To Retierate The Title In Your Speech Ending

Your title is something that your audience associates your entire speech with. However, you don’t want to simply add the title in your speech end for the sake of adding it. Instead, make it flow naturally into your speech ending. This will make it seem less forced, and will also increase the chances of your audience remembering your entire speech ending and not just the title of your speech.

1. Ruairi Robertson

Speech Ending: I feel we can all contribute to this fight worth fighting for our own health, but more importantly, our future generations’ health by restoring the relationship between microbe and man. There is SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

Long and Short School Annual Function Speech for Students and Children

The most expected event every year is the Annual School Day. It is an important time for students to show the audience their talents. The most treasured moments of this Day are the sincere arrangements, the uncontainable enthusiasm, and the full dress rehearsals. Preparations for the Annual Day begin well ahead of time, sometimes two months earlier. With all the vibrant charts on all subjects carefully hand-made by the students, and artistically displayed on the walls and thoroughly cleaned classroom, the school gets a complete face-lift.

Long Annual Day Speech in English for Students

Good morning, to all the wonderful people present to Day. It is a pleasure to begin this auspicious occasion by welcoming everyone. We all have gathered here for the Annual Day celebration which is held to celebrate the talent and skills of our children and reward them for the same.

Our children have demonstrated their skills through numerous competitions at the school or inter-school level and It gives us immense pleasure to share with you all that not only in sports competitions but our school children perform excellently in JSTSE, Olympiad of all subjects, essay writing competitions and many other academic competitions.

Competitions are opportunities that we provide to our students, where they can test their education and evaluate them by participating in various sports and academic programs. We believe in a method of learning which encourages each child to actively participate and inculcate good sportsmanship. At the class level, children who have difficulties whether it be in public speaking, stage fear, or lack of confidence to perform are encouraged to come forward by creating a comfortable environment so that they can win over their fears. Our methods of teaching are holistic and inclusive. This Annual festival is a perfect example of this, ensuring that every child participates and performs.

It gives each student a chance to come forward and demonstrates what is good in academia and non-academic activities. We feel that without the outlet of their abilities, the entire teaching process is incomplete. We have therefore established this as a necessity on this Annual Day and have planned the Annual Day program in such a way that even talent such as art should be taken into account.

You'll see lots of pictures and posters if you look around. The names and classes of students who have drawn, sketched or painted these images are reported by each individual. Take some time to go through this precious art gallery, as identification is also needed. Who knows that it might be your child who had this talent, even if you didn't know it. And some works of art are award-winning submissions.

Typically, on an Annual Day, there is a drama and dance, but this time we have added a new category, which is quite popular these days. They show them on every TV channel in the entertainment category - I'm talking about the stand-up comedy segment. Yes, we have some very talented kids here who are going to roll you with laughter barrels. So, brace for a nice Day. Our young children have organized a show that is a musical drama; mid-school people are busy practicing for dance-dramas, which our younger budding talented dance gurus have told me to choreograph. Let’s welcome them for success!

Short Annual Day Speech in English

Good morning to everyone present here. It's an extremely proud and emotional moment for us all on this very special day, as our school is going to complete one more fantastic year. I would like to wholeheartedly invite you all to our school's Annual functions. We have always heard the saying from our elders, "School life is the best, make the most of it," and today I can relate to it. Now I fully understand why the friends we make at school are said to be nothing less than family.

Special arrangements have been made to make this special day memorable. As we have our parents as well, it will be twice the fun with us on that particular day. There are different acts, singing and dancing displays, specially prepared by the students. For our parents and teachers, we have arranged various fun events, to make this day a memorable one for them as well. Some games are also planned where students can also participate.

This is our way of saying thank you to our parents and teachers for always loving us and being there for us. We've added a brand new segment on this Annual Day. We also included a selection of games that are played as a team by children and parents. It is a guarantee that it will be a nice affair and we will all enjoy it; on the one hand, on the other hand, children and parents and teachers and school staff. Simple sports such as Tug of War, Three-Legged Race and Relay Race will be held in the school greens immediately after the conclusion of the show in the auditorium. I am sure that we will all participate wholeheartedly and parents are a great help and do not disappoint us, which is a healthy way to end our Annual Day.

Long Annual Day Speech

Good morning, to all the students and parents and guardians who are here with us today!

It is a pleasure to welcome you all here today, for our Annual Day celebration, a day we all look forward to, every year. Today is the Day to celebrate our young creative and talented students. This year, our children have outshone and brought laurels to this institution, by demonstrating their skills in various competitions at the school as well as inter-school level. Competitions are opportunities where students get a chance to showcase their many talents as well as their various academic and other co-curricular activities. We believe in providing opportunities of every possible kind so as to encourage each child to actively participate in the many activities. At the individual class level, those children who have difficulties, or those who lack the confidence in public speaking, stage fear,  or confidence to perform are encouraged to come forward and we try to create a comfortable environment to help them win over their fears.

This Annual Day program is held to recognize each of our students for all that they have achieved and to encourage them to keep up with their good work. It gives each student a chance to come forward and demonstrate their specific skills and interests, whether in academics, sports or any other extracurricular activities.

We believe that without this encouragement, the entire teaching process is incomplete. We have therefore planned the Annual Day program in such a way that every child who has shown excellence in any discipline should be recognized. We also believe that this could go a long way in motivating others too.

on behalf of the entire school staff and the students, request you all parents and guardians to take some time out and go through the various exhibits here today.

This year, unlike the past years where we always had a dance-drama enacted by our very own children, we have a new category, a stand-up comedy segment which has become very popular to Day. And, this will be brought to you by our very own StandUp Comedians!

A warm welcome to all of these bright children!

Short Annual Day Speech

Good morning to everyone present here!

It is a  proud moment for all of us here today as we welcome you all to another of our Annual Day Program. It has been a fantastic year for us, especially for our bright, young, talented children.

I take this opportunity to welcome you all, my dear parents, guardians and children to our school's Annual function.

Special arrangements have been made to make this special day memorable. Each one of you and the students has been preparing for this Day for a long time.

Today we have arranged some fun events for parents and children to participate in, and we also have some dance dramas and choir singing, all choreographed by our own talented students.

We have also planned a couple of game events for parents and children to participate like Tug of War, the  Three-Legged, and the Relay Race which will start immediately after the inauguration.

I take this opportunity to invite you all, dear parents, to please support and motivate our young children, and join in all the festivities today.

Looking forward to all of you having a wonderful day here.

9 Closing a Speech: End with Power and Let Them Know It is Time to Clap

Audience clapping

Open Your Speech With a Bang Close It With a Slam-Dunk Westside Toastmasters

“Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending,” according to poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The first few words of your speech make the audience want to listen and the last few sentences help them decide what they feel about you and your topic. In this chapter, I will explain the function of a conclusion, the format of a conclusion, and I will give you numerous examples of ways to end your speech. Most of this chapter is dedicated to showing you good examples of different types of speech closings. Let’s get started by talking about the purpose of the closing.

A Strong Closing Does Many Things

  • Summarizes the points. By restating your points your audience is more likely to remember them.
  • Tells the audience when to clap. Let’s face it, it is so awkward when you are done with your speech, and no one claps. Being clear the end is near, relieves the audience of the pressure of wondering if they are clapping at the right time.
  • Provides resolution. Your speech should give the audience a sense of resolve or a sense of being challenged.

The Formula for Closing Most Speeches

  • Transition statement to ending.
  • Review the main points–repeat the thesis.
  • If it is a persuasive speech, tell the audience what you want them to do or think.
  • Provide a closing statement.

Restate the Thesis

Tell them what you are going to say, say it, tell them what you have said. This speech pattern is useful in most types of speeches because it helps the speaker to remember your key points. As you build your closing, make sure you restate the thesis. A good rule of thumb is to write it in such a way that if the audience were asked to restate the main points, their answer would match closely with your thesis.

EXAMPLE Watch as Stella Young gives her thesis and then restates her thesis at the end of the speech as she wraps up. The thesis of the talk in the introduction: We’ve been sold the lie that disability is a Bad Thing, capital B, capital T. It’s a bad thing, and to live with a disability makes you exceptional. It’s not a bad thing, and it doesn’t make you exceptional. Restates the thesis of the talk at the closing: Disability doesn’t make you exceptional but questioning what you think you know about it does.

Stella Young, I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtPGrLoU5Uk

This next example is from a student’s speech. It is easy to pull out one sentence that clearly summarizes the main points of her speech. Following her summary, she winds the speech down into a thoughtful conclusion and ends with three powerful words.

Now is the time to separate the war on drugs from the war on addiction. T oday you’ve heard the problems, impacts, and solutions of criminalizing addictions. Bruce Callis is 50 years old now. And he is still struggling with his addiction. while you all are sitting out there listening to this, I’m living with it. Bruce Callis is my father and for my entire life, I have watched our misguided system destroy him. The irony here is that we live in a society where we are told to recycle. We recycle paper, aluminum, and electronics. But why don’t we ever consider recycling them most precision think on Earth– the human life. Student Tunnette Powell, Winner of the 2012 Interstate Oratorical Association Contest.

Closing Phrases

After you restate your thesis, you should carefully deliver your closing phrases.  Your closing should provide a resolution to your speech and/or it should challenge the audience. Frantically Speaking writer Hrideep Barot suggests  “a conclusion is like tying a bow or ribbon to a box of your key ideas that your audience will be taking along with them.”

A speech closing is not just about the words you say, but it is also the way you say it. Change the pace near the end of your speech. Let your tone alone should signal the end is near. It is about deliberate voice control, don’t let your voice weakly away.

In the next section, I will cover these ways to end your speech:

End with powerful words End with a quote End with a graphic End with parallel construction End on a positive note End with a challenge End with a question End with inspiration End with well-wishing End with humor End with a call to action End with a feeling of resolve End with a prop

The best way to teach you about advanced closings is to show not tell. For this section, I will briefly explain each type of closing and then provide a video. Each video is queued so you can play the video and watch the closing statement.  I included a transcript under each video if you want to follow along.  It will be most beneficial for you to watch the clip and not just read the text. By watching, you will have a chance to hear the subtle changes in the speaker’s voice as they deliver their closing statements.

End with Powerful Words

As you design your closing, look at the last three to five words and examine them to see if they are strong words. Oftentimes, you can rearrange a sentence to end with a powerful word. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

Watch this clip for how BJ Miller ends with a powerful thought and a powerful word.

Parts of me died early on, and that’s something we can all say one way or another. I got to redesign my life around this fact, and I tell you it has been a liberation to realize you can always find a shock of beauty or meaning in what life you have left, like that snowball lasting for a perfect moment, all the while melting away. If we love such moments ferociously, then maybe we can learn to live well — not in spite of death, but because of it. Let death be what takes us, not lack of imagination. BJ Miller, What Really Matters at the End of Life

End by Circling Back to the Opening

Another type of ending is to circle back to what you said in the beginning. You can revisit a quote, share the end to an illustration that was begun in the beginning, or you can put away a prop you got out in the beginning.

Watch this clip for how Zubing Zhang begins and ends with the same quote to circle back around to the main idea.

She starts by telling a story of bungee jumping off the world’s highest platform and how she saw a sign with a quote that says, “Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.” After telling her own story about pushing her emotional limits, she circles back around at the end by saying, “As the words said high on the bungee platform, “Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.”

Yubing Zhang, Life Begins at the End of Your Comfort Zone.

End With Quote

If you end your speech with a quote, attend to the following.

  • Always say the author of the quote before the quote for example, “I want to leave you with a leadership quote ‘What you do has far greater impact than what you say,’ Steven Covey.” The problem with this ending is that “Stephen Covey” are the last two words of the speech and that is boring. Consider instead this ending. “I think Robin Sharma said it best ‘Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence, and inspiration.'” In this arrangement, the last three words are powerful–influence and inspiration.
  • Provided context for the quote before or after. Make sure the quote is meaningful and not just an easy way to end.

Watch this clip for how Sir Ken Robinson ends with a quote. Notice how he says the author and then the quote.

Also, notice how he then ties his speech to the quote with a final few sentences and ends with the powerful word–“revolution” and how he uses a strong vocal emphasis as he says his last word. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

There’s a wonderful quote from Benjamin Franklin. “There are three sorts of people in the world: Those who are immovable, people who don’t get it, or don’t want to do anything about it; there are people who are movable, people who see the need for change and are prepared to listen to it; and there are people who move, people who make things happen.” And if we can encourage more people, that will be a movement. And if the movement is strong enough, that’s, in the best sense of the word, a revolution. And that’s what we need.

Sir Ken Robinson, How to Escape Education’s Death Valley.

End with a Graphic

You might want to use a visual to make your final point. Bringing in a picture, graphic, or object, reengages the audience to pay attention to your final ideas.

Watch this clip for how Barry Schartz uses the magic words “so to conclude” and then he creatively uses a picture of a fishbowl to narrow in on his point. Notice how his final word is spoken with urgency as he says “disaster.” (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

So, to conclude. (He shows a picture of fish in a fishbowl) He says, “You can be anything you want to be — no limits.” You’re supposed to read this cartoon and, being a sophisticated person, say, “Ah! What does this fish know? Nothing is possible in this fishbowl.” Impoverished imagination, a myopic view of the world –that’s the way I read it at first. The more I thought about it, however, the more I came to the view that this fish knows something. Because the truth of the matter is, if you shatter the fishbowl so that everything is possible, you don’t have freedom. You have paralysis. If you shatter this fishbowl so that everything is possible, you decrease satisfaction. You increase paralysis, and you decrease satisfaction. Everybody needs a fishbowl. This one is almost certainly too limited –perhaps even for the fish, certainly for us. But the absence of some metaphorical fishbowl is a recipe for misery and, I suspect, disaster. Barry Schwartz, The Paradox of Choice

End with Parallel Construction

Parallel construction is a series of repeated phrases. It can be a powerful tool to use in a persuasive speech as it creates a feeling of importance.

Watch this clip for how Malala Yousafzai ends with a series of parallel statements to build momentum. Notice how her pace perfectly matches her words and you feel her strength when she ends with “education first.” (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

Dear brothers and sisters, we must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty, injustice, and ignorance. We must not forget that millions of children are out of schools. We must not forget that our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright peaceful future. So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism, and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen, and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education First.

Malala Yousafzai,  United Nations Youth Assembly

End on a Positive Note

Audiences are constantly evaluating a speaker to determine their attitude and motivation. As you consider your speech closing, ask yourself what type of impression do you want to leave?  Do you want to leave them with depression or hope? Sadness or promise? Most of the time, audiences will receive messages that end positively better than speeches that end negatively.

In this speech sample, Hans Rosling showed the audience some hard statistics and he even pointed fingers at the audience as part of the problem. To help them hear his main point, he wisely ends on a positive note.

Watch this clip for how Hans Rosling ends this thought-provoking talk on a positive note. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

Now, when thinking about where all this leaves us, I have just one little humble advice for you, besides everything else, look at the data. Look at the facts about the world and you will see where we are today and how we can move forwards with all these billions on our wonderful planet. The challenge of extreme poverty has been greatly reduced and it’s for the first time in history within our power to end it for good. The challenge of population growth is, in fact, already being solved, the number of children has stopped growing.  And for the challenge for climate change, we can still avoid the worst, but that requires the richest, as soon as possible, find a way to use their set their use of resources and energy at a level that, step by step, can be shared by 10 billion or 11 billion by the end of this century. I’ve never called myself an optimist, but I do say I’m a possibilist and I also say the world is much better than many of you think.

Hans Rosling, Facts about the Population.

End with a Challenge

Leave the audience with a doable personal challenge. Help them mentally make sense of all the information that you shared by helping them know how to file it away and how to use it.

Watch this clip for how Melissa Butler ends with a challenge. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

So, I challenge each of you, when you go home today, look at yourself in the mirror, see all of you, look at all of your greatness that you embody, accept it, and love it. And finally, when you leave the house tomorrow, try to extend that same love and acceptance to someone who doesn’t look like you . Melissa Butler, Why You Think You’re Ugly.

Watch this clip as Darren LaCroix literally falls face down to anchor the point that when we fall, we “fall forward.” (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

Darren LaCroix talks about taking risks and falling down and getting back up, he literally and purposefully falls down during his speech and ends this way: What’s your next step… take it. I didn’t want to look back at my life and say you know I never did try that comedy thing, but I died debt-free. All of us are headed toward that goal we are going to teach a point where we get stuck and our feet are like in cement and we can’t move but we’re so afraid of that ouch but we forget that if we lean forward and take a risk–(He falls face down) and we fall on our face. When we get up, notice, you still made progress. So please, with me, go ahead and fall. But fall forward. Darren LaCroiz, Winning Speech delivered at National Speech Association

End with a Question

Asking a question at the end is one way to reengage the audience. It helps them think about what your topic might mean for them.

Watch this clip for how David Eagleman reminds us about why his topic is important and then ends with a question. Notice how he pauses before his final question and how he changes the pace of his speech for the final sentence. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

So I think there’s really no end to the possibilities on the horizon for human expansion. Just imagine an astronaut being able to feel the overall health of the International Space Station, or, for that matter, having you feel the invisible states of your own health, like your blood sugar and the state of your microbiome, or having 360-degree vision or seeing in infrared or ultraviolet. So the key is this: As we move into the future, we’re going to increasingly be able to choose our own peripheral devices. We no longer have to wait for Mother Nature’s sensory gifts on her timescales, but instead, like any good parent, she’s given us the tools that we need to go out and define our own trajectory. So the question now is, how do you want to go out and experience your universe?

David Eagleman, Can We Create New Senses for Humans?

Watch this clip for how Lera Boroditsky ends with a personal note and a  powerful final question. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

I want to leave you with this final thought. I’ve told you about how speakers of different languages think differently, but of course, that’s not about how people elsewhere think. It’s about how you think. It’s how the language that you speak shapes the way that you think. And that gives you the opportunity to ask, “Why do I think the way that I do?” “How could I think differently?” And also,  “What thoughts do I wish to create?” Lera Boroditsky, How Language Shapes the Way We Think

End with Inspiration

“Inspiring your audience is all about helping them see their own vision, not yours.”

You may want to end your speech with inspiring and encouraging words. Pick words that resonate with most of your audience and deliver them in such a way that your audience feels your lift in emotion.

Watch this clip for how Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ends with an inspiring final note and a powerful last few words “regain a kind of paradise” (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.

I would like to end with this thought:   That when we reject the single-story,   when we realize that there is never a single story   about any place,   we regain a kind of paradise.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,  The Danger of a Single Story

Watch this clip for how Dan Pink ends with an inspiring final note. (I have the video cued to play just the closing) Let me wrap up. There is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. Here is what science knows. One: Those 20th century rewards, those motivators we think are a natural part of business, do work, but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances. Two: Those if-then rewards often destroy creativity. Three: The secret to high performance isn’t rewards and punishments, but that unseen intrinsic drive– the drive to do things for their own sake. The drive to do things cause they matter.
And here’s the best part. We already know this. The science confirms what we know in our hearts. So, if we repair this mismatch between what science  knows and what business does, if we bring our motivation, notions of motivation into the 21st century, if we get past this lazy, dangerous, ideology of carrots and sticks, we can strengthen our businesses, we can solve a lot of those candle problems, and maybe, maybe — we can change the world. I rest my case. Dan Pink, The Puzzle of Motivation

End with Well Wishing

There are several types of closings where the speaker wished the audience well.

The Benediction Close: M ay God bless and keep you…. The Presidential Close: God bless you and may God bless the USA The Congratulatory Close: I congratulate you on your accomplishment and wish you continued success.

End with Humor

You can end on a fun lighthearted note. It is important to always run your humor by a variety of people to make sure you are funny, and your humor is appropriate.

Watch this clip for how Andrew Dunham uses humor throughout his speech and ends with a funny one-liner. (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

I wish you all the best as we begin this journey on our paths and I sincerely hope and pray that your time and success have proven to be as memorable and spiritually rewarding as mine. If not, there’s always summer school.

Andrew Dunham, Valedictorian Comes Out As Autistic During Speech

End with a Call to Action

If you are delivering a persuasive speech, let the audience know exactly what you want them to do.

End with a Feeling of Resolve

Paul Harvey made famous the line “And now you know…the rest of the story.” Your closing should allow us to know the rest of the story or to know how a situation was resolved.

Watch this clip for how Lucy Hone ends this tough but inspiring talk with a feeling of resolve (I have the video cued to play just the closing)

https://youtu.be/9-5SMpg7Q0k?t=913 If you ever find yourself in a situation where you think there’s no way I’m coming back from this, I urge you to lean into these strategies and think again. I won’t pretend that thinking this way is easy and it doesn’t remove all the pain. But if I’ve learned anything over the last five years, it is that thinking this way really does help. More than anything it has shown me that  it is possible  to live and grieve at the same time. And for that I will be always grateful. Lucy Hone, The Three Secrets of Resilient People

End with a Prop

Nancy Duarte says you should give your audience, SOMETHING THEY  will ALWAYS REMEMBER–S.T.A.R. One way to do that is with an action or statement that will have the audience talking about it for a long time. President Obama did it with a mic drop.

Memorize Your Conclusion

End on time.

Do not diminish the effect of a great speech with a bloated, aimless conclusion. Dan Rothwell.

“Times about up.”

Don’t end with any references to time. It is like a giant stop sign saying, “stop listening.”  Don’t highlight that you ran over time or that it is almost time for lunch. You want them to think about your speech, not the clock.

“Any Questions?”

You want them to feel a sense of closure for your speech.  End with something powerful and let them applaud.  After the applause, you can offer to answer questions. Similarly, projecting your last slide with the words, “Any Questions” is a weak ending.

“Let Me Add This Point I Missed”

If you forget something in the body of your speech, it is usually best to leave it out.  Most of the time you are the only one who will miss it.

“Thank You to the Team”

There is a time to thank the organizers and those who helped you but it is not at the end of your speech. Your focus should be on your audience and what they need and what they need to hear is your idea.  Send a thank you letter to the team if you want them to feel your appreciation.

“I’m Sorry”

“Sorry again for the technology issue,” “I apologize for going over time, ” “I regret I have no answer to this.” These are all negative phrases.  Keep to your topic that is what they need to hear and stay focused.

“I’ll Close with this Video”

No, you should close with talking about the big idea.

If you don’t have a plan at the end, you will ramble. “Steer clear of meandering endings they kill a story,” according to the Moth Storytelling website. “Your last line should be clear in your head before you start. Yes, bring the audience along with you as you contemplate what transpires in your story, but remember, you are driving the story, and must know the final destination. Keep your hands on the wheel!”

To Thank or Not to Thank, That is the Question

There is a debate amongst speech professionals, speech teachers, and speech coaches about whether or not you should thank the audience. Here are their main arguments.

Why You Should Not Say Thank You

  • You want to end with powerful words. “Thank you” are not strong words.
  • The recency effect suggests they will remember the last words you spoke. You want them to remember more than just “thank you.”
  • It is not a very creative way to end.
  • It can be a sign of a lazy speaker, “I have no idea how to end this, I’ve run out of good things to say so I’ll say ‘Thank you’ so you will clap now.”

Why You Should Say Thank You

  • It has come to be the expected ending in many settings. Violating their expectations can cause them to have a negative reaction.
  • It clearly signals you are finished so the audience knows when to clap. The relieves the pressure from both you and the audience.
  • It expresses gratitude.

I will leave it up to you to decide what works for you. As for me, I plan on trying to find more creative ways to end other than just saying “thank you.”

Maximizing the Primacy Recency Effect

If I were to read you a list of thirty things on my grocery list and then asked you to list all that you can remember, chances are you would remember the first times on the list and the last items on the list ( and any ones you found interesting from the middle). When people engage in listening, they tend to remember the first and last things they hear, it is called the primacy-recency effect. T his is just one more reason that your introduction and conclusion should be so well planned out. It is those first words and last words that the audience is going to remember.

The primacy recency effect influences, not only what people pay attention to in a speech, but also which speech we pay the most attention to in a series of speeches. For example, if there is a lineup of six speakers, the first and last speakers tend to get the most attention.

As a speaker, you can use this information to your advantage by volunteering to go first or last. If you are giving a long presentation, you can break it up by allowing the audience to move around or talk to a neighbor. When you come back from break, you have re-engaged that primacy effect and moved them back to a high state of attention.

Do You Have Everything You Need for a Strong Closing?

  • Have I signaled my speech is coming to an end with my words or my voice?
  • Have I restated my main points?
  • If I am persuading my audience, do they know what I want them to do or think?
  • Have I written the last three to five words in such a way that I end with powerful words?
  • Have I memorized my closing?

Getting Off the Platform is Part of Your Closing

Plan on making a strong exit. Whether you are stepping off a stage or simply going to your seat, you should consider that the audience is watching you.

I have had students who finished their speech and then walked over to the trashcan and in a large, exaggerated movement, they threw their notecards in the trash. In our minds, we threw their message away with those cards. I’ve seen speakers, sit in their chairs and then announce, “I can’t believe my hands were shaking so much.” I’ve sat there and thought, “I didn’t notice.” I then realized that the comments they made influenced my perception of them and my perception of their topic.

You said your last word and the audience is applauding, now what? Look at your audience and smile and nod in appreciation before walking off the stage. If you will be answering questions, wait until after the applause stops to begin your question and answering period.

When practicing your speech, it is a good idea to start from your chair, walk up to a spot and then give your speech, and then walk back to your chair and sit down. Your “speech” impression begins and ends from your chair.

Key Takeaways

Remember This!

  • A speech closing should include a review of the main points and a purposeful closing sentence.
  • Persuasive speech endings should tell the audience specifically what they should do or think about.
  • The recency effect suggests that people remember the most recent things they have heard which is one reason the closing is so important.
  • Chance the pace of your speech and the tone of your voice to signal the end of the speech.

Annual Function Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Every school holds its annual celebration on a specified date, typically to honour its students and their dedication as well as to serve as a forum for them to communicate more effectively. Students get the opportunity to showcase their management and other strong talents at an annual school event. Additionally, it allows them to socialise with other students, faculty, and staff members of the school.

Annual Function Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

10 lines on the Annual Function

In our school, an annual event is planned each year.

All classrooms are adorned with paper and balloons in bright colours on this day, and the entire school is cleaned.

The teachers compile a list of all the students who took part in the competition.

To accommodate the program, a sizable pavilion was erected on the school's property, where chairs and other amenities have been set up for all the schoolchildren and onlookers.

A special guest is invited to be the main guest in the program on this particular occasion.

Outside the pavilion, a large entrance has been built with the words "welcome" painted in vibrant, lovely lettering.

All parents are also invited to the annual function.

The Principal's speech opens the annual function's schedule of events.

The students present paintings, music, dance, poetry readings, speeches, physical activity, and a variety of games on this occasion.

The chief guest presents prizes to all of the competition's winning students.

Short Speech On Annual Function

Good morning everyone, it's a great honor to stand here today and speak in front of you all on this special occasion, the school's annual function. Today is a day of celebration, a day to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers and staff.

This year has been an exceptional one for our school and we have achieved many milestones together. From sports achievements to academic success, we have accomplished so much and made our school proud. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the award recipients today, for their hard work and perseverance.

Let us also take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our teachers and staff, who have worked tirelessly to make our school what it is today. Your unwavering commitment to education and the growth of our students is truly inspiring.

A school’s annual functions help break down psychological barriers between students and teachers. They also help students feel less stressed and better prepared for their next year of studies. Everybody is encouraged to participate in the annual day festivities and take part in making it memorable—whether they are students, parents or staff. Let us embrace the spirit of celebration and unity on this day, and continue to work towards making our school the best it can be.

Thank you all for your time and attention.

Long Speech On Annual Function

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to the annual function of Auxilium Convent School. Today, we come together to celebrate another successful year and to recognise the achievements of our students and staff.

My name is Madhuri Gupta and I am honored to represent Class 12 as the anchor for this afternoon's celebration. As I stand here today, I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for all that we have accomplished in the past year.

Auxilium Convent School is dedicated to providing its students with a well-rounded education that helps them grow both academically and personally. The school’s goal is to equip each and every student with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their future endeavours.

In the past year, we students have achieved great things. We have excelled in the classroom, demonstrating their knowledge and creativity. We have also participated in a wide range of extracurricular activities, from sports and music to debate and community service. We students have represented Auxilium Convent School with distinction, and we are proud of their accomplishments.

I would also like to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff. They have created a supportive and challenging environment that encourages our students to reach their full potential. Whether it's through innovative teaching methods, personalised attention, or extra-curricular programs, our staff is always there to support and guide our students.

As we look ahead to the future, I have no doubt that Auxilium Convent School will continue to provide its students with a high-quality education. Its commitment to excellence is unwavering, and the school is dedicated to helping the students reach their full potential.

It is because of this commitment to excellence that Auxilium Convent School continues to be one of the leading schools in the region. Our students consistently perform at the highest level, and they are recognized for their achievements both locally and nationally. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff.

In addition to academic excellence, Auxilium Convent School is also dedicated to helping the students develop their character and sense of community. Through our extensive extracurricular program, students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop new skills, and give back to their community. Whether it's through our sports teams, music program, or community service projects, students are given the opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive and challenging environment.

As we look ahead to the future, I am confident that Auxilium Convent School will continue to be a leader in education and a source of pride for our community. We as students are committed to achieving our full potential, and we are dedicated to achieve a well-rounded education that prepares us for success in whatever path we choose.

So, once again, congratulations to everyone on another successful year. Let us continue to work together with the teachers and staff to receive the best possible education so we can achieve our dreams.

Thank you, and have a wonderful evening.

Feature image of Anchoring Script for College Function

An anchor should always start a program with a quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For college functions, quotes on the topic of education, teachers, students, art, creativity or having fun, can be a good start.

Some interesting quotes that you can use are listed here:

  • “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.” – Albert Einstein
  • “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.” – Plutarch
  • “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – Zig Ziglar

Choosing a quote that goes well with the nature of the event and following it up with a good welcome speech is important.

A welcome speech for a college function can be something like this:

“Hello and a warm good morning/ good afternoon/ good evening to all! Today/ tonight is the day/ night for which we all have been eagerly waiting for months, for which our students and organisers have worked tirelessly for weeks.

The moment has finally arrived. I am [your name] , your host for today/ tonight and I heartily welcome you all to the annual cultural festival of [college name] . We are really honoured to have our respected principal, Mr/Ms [name], chief guests, Mr/Ms [names] , revered teachers, dear parents and of course, our lovely students among us. We are very glad to have you all with us today/ tonight and I welcome you all on the behalf of [college name] to enjoy the event.”

Most school and college functions start with a lamp lighting ceremony. If so is the case with your college, this is how you can invite the principal and chief guests on the stage to light the lamps:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr

“Now, I would like to call on the stage our respected principal Mr/ Ms [name] as well as our chief guests Mr/ Ms [names] for the lamp lighting ceremony. Please give them a huge round of applause.”

Once the lamps are lit, the next step is to honour the chief guests.

“Now I would like to request our Principal sir/ ma’am to honour our chief guests with the bouquets and mementoes. We thank you for gracing us with your presence.”

“- Thank you, sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Calling the Principal for a Welcome Speech

“Education can truly change the world. Without education and dedicated teachers, it would not have been possible for us as a society to come this far. We, the students of [college name], are so blessed and grateful to have such wonderful teachers among us who happily guide us at every step. It is our teachers who have made us capable and responsible.

Our hearts hold so much gratitude for all our teachers. So, on this special occasion, how can we let go of the opportunity to hear words of wisdom from our respected Principal Sir/ Ma’am. Now, I would like to invite our Principal, Mr/Ms [name], to come on the stage, say a few words and enlighten us. Please give him/ her a huge round of applause.”

After the speech

“Thank you so much, sir/ ma’am. That was indeed motivating and I am sure all the students present here agree. We are honoured and privileged to have you among us. Thank you. Please take your seat.”

“Now, our students of [course, year] will present the first act of the evening, a classical Kathak dance performance. Kathak originated in North India and the dance form was used to portray epic tales from Ramayana, Mahabharata as well as other Hindu scriptures. It has now evolved into a brilliant dance form full of technique and grace. Our students today are not only going to show you the traditional side of Kathak but also the more modern, fusion side of it. Let’s welcome them on the stage and present their performance.”

After the first performance

“Wow! What a beautiful performance! Indeed graceful and brilliant. They indeed deserve a huge round of applause!

Now, it is time for the next performance which I guarantee, is going to be equally mesmerising. Our musically-talented students are now going to present an intriguing musical stage. The story of Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist. Let us welcome them with a round of applause.”

After the performance

“That was truly ethereal. We are so proud of you all! Let’s give these talented young people a huge round of applause. They deserve it. Thank you for such an amazing performance.”

“The famous Irish poet, Oscar Wilde, once said – I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. Indeed, dramas and plays can help us connect with the audience and get the message across in ways that plain conversations are unable to. And so, I believe that our next act of the event by the members of our drama club will also be successful in getting its message across. Let’s put our hands together and welcome the performers on the stage!”

“I am speechless! Wow! What a brilliant and emotional performance by our juniors. They did so well. Please give them a huge round of applause.”It really left us all in tears! The story was so heart touching. Very well done. Thank you for the performance. Please give these talented kids a huge round of applause.”

The anchor can similarly welcome different acts on the stage and carry on with the show.

“The most beautiful moments always seem to accelerate and slip beyond one’s grasp just when you want to hold onto them for as long as possible.” – E.A. Bucchianeri

“Indeed, all good things come to an end. We have now reached the conclusion of the event. I hope that you enjoyed all the performances and acts that our students had meticulously prepared. Thank you for attending this event and making it successful.

Thank you for your time, encouragement and support. I would like to especially thank our Principal and chief guests who took time out of their extremely busy schedules to attend this event and boost the morale of our students. Thank you so much. Also, all the staff members and organisers who helped us organise everything and make this event possible – Thank you!

Thank you, everyone! Have a good night.”

Anchoring Script: College/School Function

Crafting an anchoring script for a school function is an artful task that requires a delicate blend of formality, warmth, and organization. Anchoring, or hosting, is a pivotal role in any event as it sets the tone and ensures the event runs smoothly. This article will guide you through the process of writing an engaging and effective anchoring script.

Table of Contents

Understanding the Role of an Anchor

Before diving into writing the script, it’s important to understand the role of an anchor. An anchor is the face of the event, the person who guides the audience through the program, introducing participants, making announcements, and generally keeping the event on track. Think of the anchor as the bridge between the audience and the performers, ensuring a seamless flow of the function.

Know the Event

Start by familiarizing yourself with the specifics of the school function. Is it a sports day, an annual day celebration, a cultural fest, or an awards ceremony? The nature of the event will dictate the tone and format of your script. For instance, an awards ceremony might call for a more formal tone, while a cultural fest could be more informal and lively.

Create an Outline

An effective anchoring script follows a structured outline that covers all segments of the event. This outline should include:

  • Opening : A welcome note and introduction of the event.
  • Introducing dignitaries : Acknowledging the presence of any special guests.
  • Transition to events : Smoothly moving from one part of the program to another.
  • Introducing performances : Briefly presenting performers or event segments.
  • Engaging the audience : Including interactive elements to keep the audience interested.
  • Concluding remarks : Summing up the event and offering thanks.

Crafting the Opening

The opening of your anchoring script should be inviting and set a positive atmosphere. Begin with a warm greeting and a brief introduction. A touch of humor or a relevant quote can be effective, but ensure it’s appropriate for the school environment. The opening should also include a statement of the event’s purpose and, if applicable, its theme.

Acknowledging Dignitaries and Guests

Respect and recognition are key elements in any formal event. Ensure your script includes a part where you acknowledge the dignitaries, school management, and any special guests in attendance. This should be done with due respect, but also with brevity to keep the event moving.

Transitioning Between Events

One of the anchor’s most critical roles is to transition smoothly between different parts of the program. This requires a keen sense of timing and adaptability. Your script should include transitional phrases that connect segments naturally, signaling the end of one part and setting the stage for the next.

Introducing Performances and Speakers

When introducing performances or speakers, provide just enough information to intrigue the audience and set context. This might include the name of the performance, a brief description, and the names of the participants. Avoid giving away too much—let the performance speak for itself.

Audience Engagement

Throughout the event, the anchor should interact with the audience to keep them engaged. This could be through light-hearted commentary, interactive questions, or even audience participation segments. Include spots in your script where you plan to engage with the audience, but also be prepared to improvise as needed based on their response.

Concluding the Event

Your script should end with a strong conclusion that wraps up the event. Summarize the highlights briefly, thank the participants, the audience, the school staff, and any special guests. Offer a final thought or wish that resonates with the spirit of the event before bidding farewell.

Writing Tips

When writing your script, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Clarity : Use clear and concise language that can be easily understood by everyone in the audience.
  • Tone : Match the tone to the setting of the school function, whether it’s formal, casual, or somewhere in between.
  • Rehearsal : Practice your script to ensure the pacing is natural and you’re comfortable with the material.
  • Flexibility : Be prepared to adapt your script on the fly if the event deviates from the planned schedule.
  • Brevity : Keep segments short and sweet to maintain the audience’s attention.
  • Personality : Let your own personality shine through—your script should feel like a natural extension of yourself.

The Final Touches

After you’ve drafted your script, review it thoroughly. Check for flow, timing, and relevance. Edit to eliminate any awkward or unnecessary parts. Remember, an anchoring script is a guide, not a rigid framework. You need to be ready to adapt and improvise as per the live situation.

Practice Makes Perfect

Once your script is polished, practice it thoroughly. The more familiar you are with the script, the more confidently you’ll deliver it on the day of the event. Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself, or rehearse in front of a trusted friend or teacher to get feedback.

Final Thoughts

Anchoring a school function is an honor and a responsibility. A well-written script is the foundation of a successful event. It requires an understanding of the event’s mood, a clear structure, engaging content, and the ability to connect with the audience. Remember to be clear and concise, maintain an appropriate tone, rehearse thoroughly, and keep your script flexible enough for last-minute changes. With these guidelines in mind, you’ll be well on your way to crafting an anchoring script that will help create a memorable and smooth-flowing school function. Good luck, and enjoy the experience of bringing joy and structure to your school’s special event!

So: You are at the end of your speech, and you can’t wait to sit down and be done! You start speeding up your rate of delivery, but your volume goes down a bit because you are rushing and running out of breath. You finish the last main point of your speech and race off to your seat: That is not the best way to conclude a speech.

Just as with introductions, conclusions have specific functions to fulfill within a speech. And just as with introductions, there are a number of types of conclusions. In this section of this chapter, we will look at these functions, discuss the relationship between introductions and conclusions, and offer some strategies for preparing and delivering an effective conclusion.

The basic structure of a speech is not linear but circular. All the parts fit together and flow together in this circle, and the conclusion takes you right back to the introduction—with an enhanced understanding of the topic.

Prepare the Audience for the End of the Speech

A speech does not just stop—or, to be more precise, a speech should not just stop. A speech, effectively structured and delivered, should move smoothly from point to point and then to the conclusion. One of the most important functions of the conclusion is to prepare the audience for the end of the speech. Throughout the speech, you have been providing the audience with verbal and nonverbal cues to where you are going in the speech. As you move to the conclusion, you need to continue to provide these cues. You can use language cues (“now that we have seen that we can solve this problem effectively, we can review the entire situation”), movement cues (physically moving back to the center of the room where you began the speech), and paralinguistic cues (slow the rate of the speech, use more pauses) to help prepare your audience for the end of the speech.

When you prepare the audience for the end of the speech, you let them know that they need to be ready for any final comments or appeals from you, and that they should be prepared to acknowledge you as a speaker.

Present any Final Appeals

Depending on the type of speech you are presenting, you will be asking the audience for something. You may be asking them to act in a certain way, or to change their attitude toward a certain person or topic. You may be asking them to simply understand what you have had to say in your presentation. Regardless, one of the tasks of the conclusion is to leave the audience motivated positively toward you and the topic you have been presenting.

Psychologists and sociologists (as well as communication scholars) know that there is both a primacy and recency effect in presenting information (Garlick, 1993). Essentially, people tend to better remember information presented first or last—they remember what they hear at the beginning of the speech or at the end. In presenting your appeals to the audience, you can take advantage of the recency effect to increase the likelihood of your audience acting on your appeals.

When Demosthenes was asked what were the three most important aspects of oratory, he answered, Action, Action, Action.

Summarize and Close

A conclusion is structural in function. Just as the introduction must include a statement of the purpose of the speech, as well as a preview of the main ideas of the speech, the conclusion must include a restatement of the thesis and a review of the main ideas of the speech. The review and restatement are mirror images of the preview statement in the introduction. Structurally, the restatement and review bring the speech back to the top of the circle and remind the audience where we started. Functionally, they help cue the audience that the end of the speech is coming up.

End with a Clincher

With conclusions, however, there are some additional forms you may wish to use, and there are some variations and adaptations of the introductions that you will want to use as you prepare your conclusions.

Earlier in this section when we discussed introductions, it was argued that stories are quite possibly the most effective form of introduction: Stories appear to be almost “hard-wired” into our individual and cultural make-up; and stories have a built-in structure. Stories, then, also make excellent conclusions, and can be used as conclusions in at least two ways. First, you can complete the story that you started in the introduction. Remember: You stopped right before the climax or denouement, and now, you can finish the story. Alternatively, you can retell the story, and this time the story will reflect what the audience has learned from your speech. Either method provides coherence and closure to the story and the speech.

Welcome Speech for Annual Function for Students and Children

Welcome speech for annual function.

Greetings to one and all present here! I am extremely privileged to have this opportunity to address you all at this important moment for celebrating our 23rd Annual Day today. It is an honor for me to deliver my welcome speech for  annual function. Today’s children are the future of our state as well as our country. Brilliant faces that I am witnessing today, receiving awards and exhibiting their talents will grow up and definitely will be the citizens of our beloved nation tomorrow. They may grow up to achieve great success, name, and fame as well as high human values. But on the other hand, we wish them to be good human beings also and make this world a better place to live in.

I am feeling proud in saying that the talent they have displayed here today is sufficient to say that they have the potential to become worthy citizens of our society. Education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom.

Undoubtedly we are very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers, and instructors who recognize this. If this infrastructure and teachers are the two resources available to the school, then definitely, we the students are the third ones. Really, one of the joys of teaching is to draw that creative, academic and sporting potential out of the students.

We all are gathered here on this Annual Day to motivate and inspire the young minds to showcase their talents. This is a highly important occasion for everyone. It is because of that apart from the fact that this celebration highlights our school’s continuous success in the area of education. And, this platform is also an opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest of today’s evening.

He is been highly respected and known for his kind deeds and selfless services for the society social service field. He has ties with many Non-Government Organizations which are arranged for free medicines and equipment for the needy people.

We are all aware of his impeccable behaviors which have changed the lives of many. It’s really an honor to have him today as the chief guest or our annual day.

Welcome Speech for Annual Function

Esteemed Guest of Honor, Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends – I warmly welcome all of you to the annual function of our school!

I, Arpita Sehgal from Grade-X (B), feel extremely glad to have been hosting today’s program which I am sure everyone looks forward to. I can see happy, smiling faces everywhere! Clearly, the occasion is special, as this event truly showcases the achievements and talents of this school. We also feel extremely proud to have Mrs. ……… as the chief guest in our school annul function.

Her achievements in the field of academics are laudable and her efforts for the upliftment of the weaker section of society, especially the underprivileged children leave us inspired. We are really under the spell of your personality, ma’am. I sincerely hope that we could one day become like you, who can make her country proud through her noble actions. So we cannot fully express how much happy we are to have received you as our guest today. I am sure you are going to have one of your best times here.

Our students have worked really hard on their individual performances and I really hope that their hard work today brings out the best within them. These students are an epitome of talent and creativity – whether we talk about sports, dance forms, singing, etc. our school doesn’t lag behind and the students year after year are making everyone, i.e. our principal, vice principal and teachers very proud by getting accolades and rewards from outside the campus.

In fact, the students of our school have represented the institution on various levels, inter-school, zonal as well as national levels. So today they are going to showcase the same talent in order to make this year’s annual function even more memorable. They have been working really hard from past one month along with their mentors.

Along with some spectacular performances by our students, we have also organized the award giving ceremony towards the end in order to acknowledge and laud the efforts of those who have contributed in some way or the other towards the school. We truly believe that their efforts shouldn’t go unrecognized as these people inspire others to do well in life and set examples for others. It is therefore, the time to celebrate their victory and our school’s unending glory. I hope our school and the people associated with it continue to do good work and set an ideal benchmark in all the fields.

Now on this note, I would like to conclude my speech and call upon stage both our Hon’ble principal as well as vice principal to felicitate our guest tonight with a bouquet, and say a few words in this regard as only then the event will kick start.

Thank you so much everyone for listening to me so patiently, now get ready for lots of entertainment and spectacular performances today. I am sure you are not going to realize how the time will just fly!

Welcome Speech for Annual Function 2

Warm Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen – I welcome everyone to our college’s annual function!

I am sure you all must be excited for today like I am, and must be looking forward to some electrifying performances, right! But, before we kick start the event of the day, please allow me to thank and introduce our guest of honor Mr. ……… who has taken his precious time out to grace the occasion today. He needs no introduction as he is a famous writer; whose books are well read and found with many of us. So, along with the annual function we all, especially the students, are very excited for your visit. We are highly obliged that you have paid a visit to our college.

Also, I would like to especially welcome our Hon’ble chairman, vice chairman, committee members, principal, vice principal, professors and last but not the least our audience – the lovely students!

Before I take this program further, let me introduce myself to you all – I am Vishal Khanna – the final year student of B.COM (H) and your host for today. I believe that annual day is one of the most important days for both schools and colleges as on this day we celebrate the success of our institution, the achievements of our students and of course our professors who teach us with a lot of dedication and sincerity. So let us make this day memorable with a few cultural programs, such as singing and dance performances. On this day, our students get the opportunity to showcase their talent in co-curricular activities.

Today, I stand here in front of you all with a lot of pride, for being part of an educational institution, that gives equal opportunities to all the students, provides one of the finest experiences in studies and on the top of it offers a great culture. Here, in our college we are not only made to focus on our academics, but also on our overall development so that we can become responsible citizens of our country who are compassionate and helpful towards others.

In the span of gone 2 years, I have learnt a lot and received a lot of exposure. What I am today, I wasn’t the same 2 years back – I have become much more confident and assertive. Our college has given me wings to fly and our professors have always been accessible to us so much so that we could share our personal problems with them.

Our achievements and awards speak volumes about our college and its quality of education. And now it’s time to enjoy those moments of glory and make the best of this time today. So on this note, I would like to request our Hon’ble principal ma’am and vice principal ma’am to come on stage and address our students. Only after that, will we kick start the performances of today. Everyone just hold your breath and get ready for some amazing performances.

This is all from my side, thank you!

Welcome Speech for Annual Function 3

Warm Greetings Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Students – I welcome everyone to the 26 th annual function of our school.

It gives me immense pleasure to host today’s annual function of our school and feels extremely glad to be standing in front of you all and sharing this stage with my co-host. Now that our guest of honor, Mr. ……., the acclaimed academician is here, I would like to welcome him and express my gratitude on behalf of the entire school to have come to our school and gracing the occasion with his presence. I also want to extend special thanks to our respected principal for making this day happen and providing all her possible help in order to make this day this grand.

Last, but not the least I also would like to give a warm welcome to the parents of all the students. We can’t thank all the parents enough for nurturing us and giving us wings to fly. So special thanks to all the parents!

The day has finally arrived for which we all have been waiting so impatiently! So the wait is over now! But before we kick start with today’s events, please allow me to give a kind introduction of myself and my co-host. I – Saransh Kapoor from Class – XII (B), Commerce Stream and my co-host is Miss. Neha Juneja from IX (C), Humanities Stream. I hope we both could impress you all with our hosting abilities; therefore, we also seek your cooperation. Please remain seated on your respective chairs and get ready for loads of entertainment.

However, it is not going to be a day of entertainment only, but also of recognition. As the ritual goes, our school is going to reward/award the teachers and students for bringing accolades to our school and adding more glory to its name. Besides, I also want to share one great piece of news with you all and I feel immensely proud to say that our school has been selected as the present year’s best school in the city. Isn’t it so wonderful to hear that? Of course, I can see a big smile on everyone’s faces!

Secondly, our students have proven their excellence in multiple fields, academic and non-academic both. Of course non-academic varies from dance and singing to sports. Their relentless efforts have borne fruit and the efforts of our teachers too. And I can hesitatingly say that we have the best teachers in our school. It goes without saying that such acclamation and rewards provide fuel for the future years to come. This helps us in preparing even harder for the future.

These inter-school competitions also help us in remaining abreast of all the latest developments in the educational field and new teaching techniques due to cross-boundary interactions. So, I hope that our school continues to become a part of these competitions and prove its mettle in varied fields.

With this, I would like to bring my speech to a closure and get started with today’s program. So give a huge round of applause for our junior students from V standard.

Welcome Speech for Annual Function 4

Warm Greetings Everyone! I welcome all to the 5 th annual function in our ABC Academy of Commerce.

I – Akshat Khanna, is your host for today and just like you all truly look forward to seeing some amazing performances by our lovely students. The day is truly special for all the founders and people associated with this institute; because, today we have successfully completed 5 years and will now be entering into the 6 th year of our association. It feels like yesterday, when we started off this venture and today I can say with a lot of pride that our institute has touched great heights.

We treasure our students and nothing gives us more happiness than seeing their contented faces and them doing well in academics. This institute was founded with a view to provide quality education to the students and help them in achieving their career goals. I am glad that in past three years we have been able to abide by our principles and make quality education and friendly environment available to our students.

Therefore, in order to celebrate our victory and recognize the efforts of our students, we have been celebrating annual function every year with great zeal and show, so much so that it has now become a yearly ritual. Everyone right from the administration to our students, eagerly await this propitious day in order that the complete unit of this institute should come together and celebrate the success of our institute. So these annual functions not just give us a reason to celebrate and enjoy together under one roof, but are also symbolic of our institute’s growth and success year after year.

This goes without saying that I feel extremely proud to be a part of this institution where we not only teach our students and help them excel in their respective area of studies, but also work on their personalities for their overall development.

Now without any further ado, I would like to conclude my speech and kick start with today’s program which you all have been waiting for so eagerly. Ladies and Gentlemen and our dear students, get ready for our first Dance Performance by “Aakriti Dance Group”. They are an 8-members group with students trained in Classical Dance Form. Please welcome them with a huge round of applause.

Now, after that incredible dance performance, it’s time to soothe your ears with the melodious voice of our student, i.e. Natasha who will be gracing the stage with her singing performance on one of the most popular songs of Sunidhi Chauhan.

Last but not least, is the prize distribution ceremony where our juries have to take the toughest call of selecting the winners because we feel that everyone is the best. In order to do the honors, May I please call on stage our Principal and Chief Guest for the prize distribution ceremony.

Grampian Pride: All you need to know about this year’s celebration in Aberdeen

The annual parade and pride village is being organised by Four Pillars.

Four men hold up the rainbow lletters spelling Love at last year's Grampian Pride

Aberdeen’s largest LGBT+ celebration kicks off this month, showcasing pride and inclusivity in the north-east.

Grampian Pride 2024 will be held on Saturday May 25, beginning with a vibrant and colourful parade through the city centre.

In previous years, thousands would march down Union Street from Albyn Place to Broad Street, showcasing pride in the city.

Last year was the largest Grampian Pride parade in history, with more than 8,500 people from all walks of life taking part.

The organisers of Grampian Pride 2024 are aiming to top that number.

This year the parade will take an alternative route, turning off Union Street and on to Union Terrace before turning on to Schoolhill and down Upperkirkgate, arriving in front of Marischal College as usual.

The parade will commence at 11am and finish at noon with participants encouraged to begin congregating from 9.30am.

As with previous years, the Pride Village will be held at Duthie Park from 1pm, where several entertainers will take to the stage to wow the crowd.

Hosted by drag queen Scarlet Diamonte, acts include the infamous dancing diva of Essex, Cheryl Hole, a contestant on the hit reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Also bringing their unique talent to the stage is Eurovision double-act Subwoolfer, as well as Aberdeen alt-rock band The Gaslight Project.

A new addition for this year, to encourage people from a wide range of ages to turn out, is a silent disco tent.

There will also be a family zone for adults and kids to enjoy, which will be alcohol-free.

Grampian Pride 2024 ticket details

Food vendors include Skoff Catering, A-Z Delicious Donuts, Little Miss Whippy, Popseys Pancakes and others.

There will also be more than 30 engagement stalls dotted around the site, offering advice and some free merch.

A view of the crowd as thousands of people turn out for Grampian pride last year

No parking is available at the Pride Village, and bag searches will be conducted before entering Duthie Park.

Organiser Deejay Bullock said: “Grampian Pride 2024 invites everyone to join us for a day of love, inclusivity, and community.

“Together, let’s make this year’s celebration a truly unforgettable experience, remembering our history, celebrating our present and embracing our future.”

Brightly coloured participants marched down Union Street at a previous event

Anyone can join the Pride parade, however, to access the village people must have a wristband.

Participants must get a free ticket via the Grampian Pride app.

This will be exchanged for a wristband on arrival at Duthie Park.

People also have the option to purchase a VIP ticket for £12.

This will cut queuing times at the gate and allow access to a VIP area and bar at the stagefront.

"Adam Smith, the SEC, Data, and the Public Good" Prepared Remarks Before the 11th Annual Conference on Financial Market Regulation

Chair Gary Gensler

Chair Gary Gensler

Washington D.C.

May 9, 2024

Good afternoon. It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 11th Annual Conference on Financial Market Regulation. As is customary, I’d like to note that my views are my own as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and I am not speaking on behalf of my fellow Commissioners or the staff.

My thanks to the Center for Financial Services at Lehigh University, the Center for Financial Policy at the University of Maryland, and of course the staff of the SEC’s Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA).

DERA’s terrific team of more than 170 economists, statisticians, data scientists, engineers, attorneys, accountants, and other staff are at the heart of everything we do at the SEC.

The Division has a seat at the table for all of the SEC’s decision-making, whether it’s monitoring markets, enforcement, or policymaking. For all of this work, we depend on data.

The Nature of Finance

Since antiquity, finance has been about the pricing and allocation of money and risk throughout the economy. There are those who have money who want to invest it. Others need money to fund good ideas, buy a house, or help get through life’s inevitable challenges. There are those who have risk but don’t want to bear it, and others willing to take on that risk.

Finance sits in the middle, like the neck of an hourglass whose grains of sand are money and risk.

Finance depends on data.

It’s with data that investors and issuers on either side of the hourglass participate in markets. It’s with data that the intermediaries who sit at the neck of the hourglass help price and allocate money and risk. Intermediaries don’t just sit passively passing the sand through the hourglass. They become important market participants themselves. They retain and transform money and risk. They also accumulate significant amounts of data on markets, pricing, and risk.

In finance, there also is a tendency toward concentrated data sets with sometimes dominant influence.

This is the nature of finance.

Data, a Public Good

Adam Smith, known as the father of modern economics, noted in The Wealth of Nations more than 200 years ago that the whole economy benefits when the price of information is lowered, or information is free. [1] Smith’s maxim is relevant every day in our modern capital markets.

Reliable, accessible data benefits everyone. No one private entity, though, has the incentive to create a database with reliable, comparable, and accessible data, even if they themselves may benefit. Thus, data is a public good.

Relying solely on market-based incentives would lead to under-production of the public good of information about securities.

President Franklin Roosevelt and Congress understood this. Setting rules that determine what data is provided to the public is one of the most consequential things we do at the SEC. The basic bargain Roosevelt and Congress laid out 90 years ago was that investors get to decide which risks to take so long as those companies raising money from the public make what Roosevelt called “complete and truthful disclosure.”

Roosevelt and Congress set up the SEC in 1934 to oversee the markets—and the intermediaries at the neck of the hourglass—to promote fair, orderly, and efficient markets.

While Smith’s maxim and the SEC’s role in promoting data as a public good is a constant, technology, business models, and risks change. Thus, we have an obligation to continue to refresh rules with regard to data, disclosure, and transparency.

I think of the SEC’s roles with regard to promoting data as a public good in at least four areas: issuer disclosure, disclosure by market participants, transparency of markets, and the SEC’s role providing to the public economic research as well as aggregate statistics.

Issuer Disclosure

First, Congress embedded in our securities laws a role for the SEC to oversee disclosures from public companies and registered investment companies. Further, they recognized from the SEC’s beginning the importance of guarding against insider trading where insiders abuse information that hasn’t been disclosed. [2] Few things undermine trust in the markets more than insiders abusing their positions for personal advantage, such as by trading using material nonpublic information.

The core benefits of a mandatory disclosure-based regime and guarding against insider trading haven’t changed in the last nine decades. As I said, though, technology and business models do change. What investors find important to their investment decisions also changes over time.

For instance, under Chair Arthur Levitt, the SEC in 2000 implemented Regulation Fair Disclosure to prevent companies from disclosing material non-public information to only certain individuals and not everyone. [3]

More recently, the SEC has updated disclosure requirements underlying the basic bargain. These last two years we’ve adopted rules providing investors with disclosures on emerging risks like climate [4] and cybersecurity; [5] capital raising technologies, like special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), [6] and an age-old topic—executive compensation. [7]

The public has benefitted from the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval System (EDGAR) in the three decades since the Commission first required mandatory EDGAR filings in 1993. To keep pace with ever-evolving markets, technology, and business models, we’ve updated EDGAR over the years. We recently made proposals that would enhance EDGAR’s security and further improve filers’ access to the EDGAR system. We have also worked across our rulemaking agenda to increase the structuring of data filed with the Commission. Further, since 2021, the Commission has made available Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that facilitate public access to financial statements and other disclosures made by publicly traded companies. Studies show that machine-readable disclosures benefit investors, markets, and issuers, for example by decreasing information processing costs, making stock prices more informative, as well as reducing market inefficiencies and risks.

We are now working with other agencies to implement the Financial Data Transparency Act, which seeks to promote interoperability of financial regulatory data.

We also have an important job in reviewing thousands of company and fund disclosures each year.

The Division of Corporation Finance in FY 2023 reviewed offering documents and periodic reports from among the approximately 7,400 actively reporting issuers, including more than 4,000 companies listed on U.S. exchanges.

The Division of Investment Management in FY 2023 reviewed more than 1,900 filings related to more than 4,400 funds and insurance products as well as annual reports from more than 4,200 funds.

Essential to investors’ trust in the reliability of public companies’ financial information is an independent audit of issuers’ financial statements. Congress understood this when they gave the SEC authority over setting accounting standards for public companies. Congress further understood this when they passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 in response to some of the largest accounting frauds and bankruptcies in the history of our country.

Market Participant Disclosure

Second, beyond issuer disclosure, the public benefits from data about market participants. Such data enhances price discovery, reduces information asymmetries, and promotes trust in the markets.

Such disclosures include institutional investment managers holdings, [8] beneficial ownership reporting, [9] and portions of broker-dealer annual audited financial statements. [10]

Again, technology, business models, and risks change. To that end, the SEC has updated a number of these market participant disclosure requirement in the last few years. For instance, we recently adopted rule amendments governing beneficial ownership reporting under Sections 13(d) and 13(g) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. [11] The rules shortened the deadlines by which certain beneficial owners of a company must inform the public of their position.

Further, as mandated by Congress, we adopted last year a rule to broaden the scope of short sale related data available to regulators as well as the investing public. [12]

Market Transparency

Third, the SEC has a role in promoting the transparency of the buying and selling of securities.

Such transparency matters, whether it’s prior to the transaction (so-called pre-trade transparency) or after the transaction (so-called post-trade transparency). We see this in our daily lives, whether we’re shopping for a car, a security, or a copy of Adam Smith’s book. We benefit from knowing what others paid for a product or a security in a transaction that recently occurred.

Post-trade transparency promotes liquidity and helps investors. There is something about that sunshine. It gives everyone a sense of where the current market is. The public gets to see details of the last trade that two counterparties just negotiated in that market.

Last year, we adopted a rule mandated by Dodd-Frank to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the securities lending market. [13]

We also recently adopted final rules to require that large broker-dealers—those with more than 100,000 customers—disclose execution quality to the public. [14]

In terms of the National Market System, a great deal has changed since we adopted Regulation NMS in 2005. In particular, a large and growing amount of equity trading now occurs in what many call the dark markets, particularly off-exchange market centers such as wholesalers and dark pools.

In addition to proposing a rule to narrow the minimum tick size, [15] the proposal would update the more than 120-year-old definition [16]   of round lot [17] by determining the size of round lots by the share price. The proposal also would add quotes on odd-lots to core data. Further, it would bring greater transparency to the access fees charged and related rebates paid by exchanges.

Earlier this year, we also approved a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) rule change to enhance post-trade transparency in the Treasury markets. [18] The FINRA rule, for the first time, will provide the public with post-trade transparency in the Treasury markets on a trade-by-trade basis, rather than on an aggregated basis. The scope of what will be published to the public will include a trade’s time, price, direction, venue, and volume.

Economic Research and Aggregate Market Statistics

Fourth, we have a role in publishing economic research. DERA provides impartial economic analyses that consider the costs and benefits of our rules as well as their effects on efficiency, competition, and capital formation.

We get feedback from the public on these economic analyses, which benefits our rulemaking. Our economic analyses also benefit the markets broadly because, as Smith said, making data available creates a public good. Our economists, from time to time, also publish research that’s outside of rulemaking. Taken together, this economic research helps improve market transparency and promotes the public’s understanding of markets.

The SEC also has had a history of publishing aggregate data with regard to the securities markets.

Since 2014, we have published quarterly aggregated trading information data, sourced from the Market Information Data Analytics System (MIDAS), as well as monthly money market fund statistics. In 2015, we began publishing quarterly private fund statistics. Since 2022, we have been publishing data on the security-based swaps market twice a year.

In addition, the SEC has made data more accessible and usable. Since 2015, DERA has published data sets aggregated from structured disclosures by individual registrants. Currently, it publishes 12 such data sets.

Such publications by the SEC helps the public better understand how our economy and securities markets function.

We recently began publishing a new report, the Registered Fund Statistics report, [19] which aggregates data about the more than $25 trillion registered fund industry. This will give the public a view into the registered fund industry, which includes more than 12,000 mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and closed-end funds.

I’ve asked staff to make recommendations about other areas where we might periodically publish aggregate market statistics.

Adam Smith’s nearly 250-year-old notion—that the whole economy benefits when the price of information is lowered, or information is free—is as relevant today as it has ever been. The SEC, as mandated by Congress, has an important role to promote data as a public good.

I’m proud to work with all of my colleagues at the SEC, including those of you from DERA, to ensure for the public good of data.
