The Book That Transformed Virat Kohli: A Yogi's Tale

Delving into the spiritual journey of virat kohli, inspired by 'autobiography of a yogi', uncovering the transformative impact of mindfulness and karma in his career.

Virat Kohli , one of cricket's most illustrious names, has long been known for his exceptional skill on the field and his passionate attitude towards the game. However, it's not just his talent with the bat that's intriguing, but also his journey towards personal and professional growth. Central to this journey has been a book that profoundly altered his perspective on life.

The book, titled " Autobiography of a Yogi " by Paramahansa Yogananda , is not your typical sports biography or a manual on cricketing techniques. Instead, it delves into the realms of spirituality and self-realisation, offering insights that transcend conventional boundaries of sports psychology. Kohli, known for his aggressive playing style and fiery temperament, credits this book for bringing a significant transformation in his approach to life and cricket.

Published in 1946, "Autobiography of a Yogi" has inspired millions worldwide, including several notable personalities. The book explores the life of Paramahansa Yogananda and his encounters with spiritual figures of both the East and West. It offers a blend of personal anecdotes and philosophical insights, providing readers with a unique perspective on the journey towards spiritual enlightenment.

For Kohli, the impact of this book was profound. He has spoken about how it helped him understand the importance of inner peace and mental clarity, essential elements for anyone performing at the highest levels in any field. The emphasis on meditation and mindfulness in the book helped him to maintain focus during high-pressure situations on the field and to manage stress and aggression more effectively.

Moreover, "Autobiography of a Yogi" introduced Kohli to the concept of karma yoga - the yoga of action. This principle emphasises performing one's duty without attachment to the results, a philosophy that Kohli has integrated into his approach to cricket. He acknowledges that while the desire to win is vital, it's equally important to stay detached from the outcome and enjoy the process of playing the game.

Kohli's journey, influenced significantly by the teachings of this book, is a testament to the power of integrating spiritual practices into daily life. It underscores the idea that athletes are not just physical beings but require mental and spiritual balance to excel in their fields.

"Autobiography of a Yogi" didn't just change Virat Kohli's perspective on life; it provided him with a toolkit to navigate the immense pressures of international sport. This story is an inspiration, showing how embracing spirituality can lead to profound personal growth and success, both on and off the field.

The Indian captain, Virat Kohli has been in tremendous form off late, notching up centuries at will. Only recently, Kohli became the only player to score double centuries in four consecutive series, surpassing the great Donald Bradman and former India captain Rahul Dravid. The Delhi-born took to social media on Saturday and shared the reason behind his brilliant success in the recent past. Kohli credited a book titled, 'Autobiography of a Yogi' by Paramahansa Yogananda as one of the reasons behind his rise as a batsman and a cricketer.

Kohli urged the people of the country to read the book and wrote on Instagram, "I love this book. A must read for all those who are brave enough to let their thoughts and ideologies be challenged. Earlier, Kohli's coach Rajkumar Sharma had shared a lot of things that transformed the 28-year-old batsman from a talented player to a great player. Talking about his success, in a recent interview with CricketNext, Sharma said, "Kohli once told me, if I don't set the benchmark as captain, who else will? Even as the world looks on in wonder, I know the boy behind the man. He used to gorge on butter chicken, rolls and all sorts of fast food. But today, it finds no place in his diet.

"In fact, he is so particular about his diet, that even when he comes over to my place, he won't have packaged juices. You either give him fresh fruit juice or you don't. Carbs are a strict no-no and there are no binge days in his routine anymore," he revealed.

Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Read The Autobiography Of A Yogi

Other than the fact that virat kohli swears by it.

autobiography of a yogi review virat kohli

As you can probably tell, we're as big fans of Virat Kohli as the next guy, and in this idolising culture it's easy to take everything at face value just because we love the guy recommending it.

So, when a bit of news went viral about Virat recommending Autobiography Of A Yogi , it would be easy for a cynic to scoff and say that there probably isn't much to the book, but we're here to tell you that would just be an injustice to yourself because this book is a must-read for many reasons. Here are the top three.

It challenges the status quo

If you go into it with an open mind, this book has the ability to challenge what you take to be 'truth'/. Imagine being on an LSD trip and seeing things that defy logic and can only be described as miraculous.

It awakens a latent spirituality

Paramahansa Yogananda talks with clarity on the ideas of spirituality and religion and draws parallels between different religions.

It tells a story

Whatever your beliefs might be, one thing everyone can agree on is that a well told story always has the ability to take you in, and this one does just that by narrating a story of a boy who grew up in Bengal, who grew up to interact with some of the most divine and intellectual minds, and follows his own journey to becoming a monk and taking yoga to the western world.

So if you're seeking some inspiration in life, we suggest you follow what Virat Kohli reads.

Virat Kohli Reveals The Source Of Inspiration That Changed His Life

Virat Kohli

Arguably one of the most popular and highly sought-after sportpersons in the country, Virat Kohli has taken huge strides, both personally and professionally, in his eight-year-old stint with Indian cricket. Kohli is ranked no. 1 in T20s, no. 2 in Tests and no. 3 in ODI cricket. To top it all, he looks like he's in the best shape of his life. If that's not perfection personified, then probably nothing will. We all know how focussed Kohli is in taking Indian cricket to new heights and there's probably enough documented proof on that. But, if you go down the memory lane and recall Kohli's early days in Indian cricket, you'd notice that the 28-year-old was not always pivotal for Team India, let alone a consistent batsman. So what really changed and, more importantly, how did it all begin? The answer to that question is the book 'Autobiography of a Yogi' written by Paramhansa Yogananda. The Indian captain recently shared a photo of the book on Instagram where he labelled it as the source that changed his life.

I love this book. A must read for all those who are brave enough to let their thoughts and ideologies be challenged. Lessons from ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’

Lessons from ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’

The waves of inspiration, hope, and meaning that PARAMHANSA YOGANANDA’S Autobiography of a Yogi has radiated out to the world since its publication 75 years ago have uplifted society with its message of unity of all races, religions, and beliefs; of the potential of every sincere seeker to find God; and of the loving presence of Divine Consciousness behind all the seemingly dark dreams of this world, says NAYASWAMI DEVI, spiritual director of Ananda Sangha Worldwide. This is what she wrote of this iconic book:

We did an interview recently with our good friend, Phil Goldberg, author of The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru . The interview was in honour of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the first publication of Autobiography of a Yogi in December 1946.

During the interview, Phil raised an interesting question: “What would the world be like today without the Autobiography ?” This intriguing query launched a series of thoughts that kept falling like dominos in my mind for many days.

First, there are the big, bold strokes of famous people inspired by the book who have had a huge impact on society.

Steve Jobs, the visionary behind Apple, read the Autobiography every year of his adult life. It was the only book he kept on his iPhone, and he left instructions to give a copy of it to everyone who attended his funeral when he died tragically at an early age.

autobiography of a yogi review virat kohli

Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek , once gave an interview to a young actor (who happened to be a disciple of Yoganandaji). The actor saw a copy of the Autobiography on a bookshelf behind Mr. Roddenberry’s desk, and asked him, “Have you read that book?” He replied, “Read it? I get lots of my ideas from it. The thought of ‘beaming people up’ came from the chapter, ‘The Resurrection of Sri Yukteswar.’”

George Harrison of the Beatles became a disciple, and the music written later in his life was influenced by this association.

Virat Kohli, the captain of India’s undefeated cricket team, said of the Autobiography : “I love this book. A must-read for all those who are brave enough to let their thoughts and ideologies be challenged. The understanding and implementation of the knowledge in this book will change your whole perspective and life.”

autobiography of a yogi review virat kohli

Then there are the four million copies in over thirty languages that have been sold to date. In the years that we have been sharing Yogananda’s teachings around the world, we’ve met countless people everywhere who have read it.

Some have said, “Oh, I read the Autobiography years ago. I wish I had followed him.” Others told us, “When I read it, my whole perspective on life changed.” And still others quietly said, “After reading it, I have followed him as a disciple ever since.” Not one person we met who had read it was untouched by its spiritual influence.

Towards the end of our interview, Phil asked us another question: What was the impact on us of our first reading of the book? Strange to say, I had never really thought deeply about this. My spontaneous reply was, “I felt like I had met my dearest friend, who combined depth, wisdom, and truth with warmth, childlike joy, and humour.”

So, I offer you, too, this question to ask yourself: What impact has the Autobiography had on your life? Perhaps in answering it, you’ll receive increased clarity and commitment in your own spiritual search.

The waves of inspiration, hope, and meaning that Autobiography of a Yogi has radiated out to the world since its publication have been forces of upliftment for society, whether people were aware of it or not. Its message is one of unity of all races, religions, and beliefs; of the potential of every sincere seeker to find God; and of the loving presence of Divine Consciousness behind all the seemingly dark dreams of this world.

Through his autobiography, Yogananda has created a bridge to the future where people can experience their unity with God and with one another. As he wrote in the concluding sentence of his book: “‘Lord,’ I thought gratefully, ‘Thou hast given this monk a large family!’”

We bow at your feet, dear Master, for your gift to the world of Autobiography of a Yogi .

The book that has changed the lives of millions

Ay Mass Market Cover With 1Inch 75Th Anniversary Sticker

I keep stacks of Autobiography of a Yogi around the house, and I give it out constantly to people. When people need ‘regrooving,’ I say read this, because it cuts to the heart of every religion.

George Harrison (late former member of the Beatles)

How did autobiography of a yogi change your life share your story with us.

One day, while working on his autobiography, Paramahansa Yogananda quietly told those with him, “When I have left this world, this book will change the lives of millions.” Widely acclaimed as a spiritual classic, the influence of Autobiography of a Yogi has continuously spread since its publication seventy-five years ago, inspiring and transforming the lives of readers worldwide.

Yogananda’s autobiography takes the reader on a multifaceted journey. From the deeply poignant insights into the author’s personal life and spiritual search, to the fascinating portraits of many saints and yogis (both well-known and unknown), to the profound explanations of the esoteric aspects of India’s spirituality, Autobiography of a Yogi has stirred in many a deep desire to experience the Divine within themselves.

A Continual Source of Inspiration

When Autobiography of a Yogi was first published in the winter of 1946, it was met with an outpouring of praise by readers and the world press.

Columbia University Press wrote, “There has been nothing before, written in English or in any other language, like this presentation of Yoga.” Newsweek reported, “Yogananda’s book is rather an autobiography of the soul than of the body….a fascinating and clearly annotated study.” And The New York Times described it as “a rare account.”

Since that time, the book’s widespread appeal and popularity continues to endure. In 1999, it was named as one of the “100 Best Spiritual Books of the Century.”

And recently the financial newswire 24/7 Wall St. cited Autobiography of a Yogi in a special report as one of the “20 of the Most Popular Autobiographies of All Time.” Showcased alongside such works as Helen Keller’s The Story of My Life and Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom , Autobiography of a Yogi and the other titles making the list were chosen from a selection of nearly 900 works.

Regarded as “a joyous affirmation of the power of the human soul” ( West Coast Review of Books ) — Autobiography of a Yogi has enjoyed a steady surge in interest in recent years due to the growing appeal of meditation and the ongoing relevance of Paramahansaji’s life-transforming teachings to those interested in finding spiritual balance and inner peace despite outward — and often tumultuous — change.

Over the years, the book has drawn readers from all walks of life, ranging from Nobel Prize Laureate Thomas Mann, Apple founder Steve Jobs (who arranged for the book to be given to all those attending his memorial service), acclaimed musicians John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar, Beatle George Harrison, and international cricket star Virat Kohli.

And Kohli took to Twitter and Instagram on Saturday to ask his fans and followers to read a book titled: “Autobiography of a Yogi.”

“Kohli doesn’t go out too often these days and the time he gets off the field, he likes to either workout in the gym or read books and listen to music. He has taken to books like a fish to water and is an avid reader. He likes reading autobiographies. I wouldn’t like to take any name in particular, but it is no just restricted to autobiographies of sportspersons. He also likes to read about people who have inspiring life stories. I think this habit has brought calmness into his approach and no doubt he has matured as a person.

“The same goes with music. He likes to listen to music whenever he gets time. I think it is important to switch off when you are off the field and these habits have definitely helped him. You need to switch off for a while when you are off the field and these habits definitely helps him do that,” he had said.

How Many Books Have You Read From Virat Kohli's List?

Nerd Mode On

Nerd Mode On

Recently the Indian captain made headlines for his reading choice during the opening Test between India and the West Indies. Team India captain Virat Kohli wears many hats – batsman, model, fashion curator - but one title that few associate with him is bookworm. When he’s not playing cricket, practising his swing or hitting the gym, the right-handed batsman loves to relax with a good book, as evidenced by this tweet. We take a look at some of the books that make the ‘nerd’ in Kohli happy. (Image: Twitter/ViratKohli)

After being dismissed for nine in the first innings on Day 1 of the ongoing Test between India and the West Indies, the Indian captain had plenty of time on his hands for a little light reading. Kohli was spotted reading 'Detox Your Ego: Seven Easy Steps to Achieving Freedom, Happiness and Success in Your Life' by Steven Sylvester, much to the amusement of India’s netizens who have long trolled Kohli for his arrogance. Peppered with sports anecdotes, the book helps readers understand their underlying motivations and anxieties and improve the way they achieve their goals. (Image: Twitter/DetoxYourEgo)

A few years, Kohli made headlines when he recommended that fans and followers read a book that had made a huge difference to his life - ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ by Paramahansa Yogananda. “I love this book. A must read for all those who are brave enough to let their thoughts and ideologies be challenged. The understanding and implementation of the knowledge in this book will change your whole perspective and life. Believe in the divine and keep marching on doing good deeds #onelove #begratefu l#helponeanother.” He said, recommending the book on social media. Regarded as a spiritual classic, ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ traces the life of Paramahamsa Yogananda and his encounters with spiritual figures in the East and West. It was the only e-book found on the Apple co-founder Steve Jobs's personal iPad 2. Jobs had first read the book in high-school and discovered it again while staying at a guesthouse in India. The book became a major part of Job’s life and he is said to have reread it every year. (Image: Twitter/imVkohli)

In the lead-up to the 2011 World Cup, as part of a joint initiative by the ICC and 'Room to Read' to promote global literacy and access to books, Kohli revealed another favourite tome on his reading list. “I like Andre Agassi’s autobiography. The author tells the story of his remarkable career, which featured many ups and downs. The best part about the book is that at no point does the author try to project himself as a ‘superhuman’. He is as human as you and me, but a champion and an inspiration,” said Kohli.

Book Review: The Autobiography of a Yogi

Introduction

During Steve Jobs’ memorial service in 2011, every attendee received a black box containing a book called The Autobiography of a Yogi as a gift. The book has been known for being the only book found on Steve Job’s personal iPad and he re-read it every year in his life for 40 years.

Moreover, the famous cricketer Virat Kohli, musician George Harrison, CEO of Salesforce, Mark Benioff, and the PM of India have all read this book. So what is so good about this book?

autobiography of a yogi review virat kohli

I shall begin the summary and then move on to a simple story I found interesting. Finally, I will progress to the lessons the book teaches us. I recommend you to check it out yourself and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Paramahansa Yogananda, who is credited for bringing yoga to the west, tells his remarkable journey of spirituality through this magnificent book.

From a very young age, Yogananda was very spiritually inclined. He was the son of a mother who loved to give to charity and a father with a high rank in the Bengal-Nagpur railway company.

His parents were disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, the guru of Yogananda’s guru. Lahiri Mahasaya was one of the greatest spiritual masters of his age. In fact, Yogananda called him the Yogavatar (incarnation of Yoga) of the age.

When he was 11 years old, Yogananda’s mother appeared before him in a vision that foretold her death.  He would continue to have similar visions throughout his life. After his mother’s departure, Yogananda began searching for his guru and tried to reach the Himalayas, however, when he was 17, he finally found his mentor – Sri Yukteswar Giri.

Soon after, Yogananda gave responsibility for his life over to his guru despite his disapproval for his master’s harsh and stern behavior towards him. However, later Yogananda reveals that Sri Yukteswar had played a huge role in shaping his life.

Yogananda strongly believes in the guru-disciple relationship, a key aspect of the book. Yogananda often spends days at Sri Yukteswar’s ashram in order to hear his mentor’s life stories.

Sri Yukteswar also initiates him into Kriya yoga later. Nevertheless, Sri Yukteswar teaches him the importance of serving one’s duties and purposes and that he must fulfill his obligations of studying.

Yogananda finally received his Bachelor’s degree from the Serampore College in Calcutta in 1915, doing the minimum to get by in school, as he was only interested in the spiritual path.

In 1917, Yogananda founded a school for boys in Dihika, West Bengal, where yoga was taught along with the typical curriculum.  In 1920, Yogananda went to the United States where his talks about religion and yoga were enthusiastically received. He also founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in order to spread the ideals of yoga to the west.

What makes this book so interesting and enriching is his descriptions of his encounters with various notable people, including Therese Neumann, Sri Anandamayi Ma, Mohandas Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Sir C. V. Raman, Luther Burbank, and many other swamis.

Below is one such encounter I found enjoyable to read:

The Perfume Saint

When Paramhansa Yogananda was still in his youth, he was searching for his “guru” or someone who could help him achieve his goal. When he returned to Calcutta from Benares, he went to the revered Gandha Baba who was publicly known for being able to create any perfume he wanted just by speaking.

Fascinated by this cool ability, Yogananda went to his house one evening and asked him to give him the smell of a rose. Instantly, the revered saint was able to create the scent of a rose and pass it to Yogananda. At this almost magical creation, Yogananda was greatly shocked.

To further test the powers of the yogi, he plucked a scentless flower and asked it to be permeated with the fragrance of jasmine. Miraculously, this time too, the scent of the jasmine was transmitted to the flower petal.

A few years later, during the festive occasion, Yogananda asked for everyone to receive some out-of-season tangerines to be materialized on their plates. Once again, the oranges appeared on his plate out of nowhere. Yogananda later explains to the readers that a person reacts to different sensory stimuli – olfactory, visual, gustatory, auditory, and tactual – which are produced by the variations in electrons, protons, and neutrons.

The vibrations are regulated by atomic energies intelligently charged with the stimuli for the senses. Yogananda calls these “lifetrons”. However, many people, myself included, remain unconvinced by this explanation.

To this Yogananda answers by saying that the eminent French chemist M. Georges Claude, performed “miracles” at Fontainebleau in 1928 before a scientific assemblage through his chemical knowledge of oxygen transformations. His “magician’s wand” was simple oxygen, bubbling in a tube on a table. The scientist “turned a handful of sand into precious stones, iron into a state resembling melted chocolate and, after depriving flowers of their tints, turned them into the consistency of glass.

By a single whiff of the oxygen blowpipe, he could change sand into sapphires, rubies, and topazes.

This leads to our first conclusion on why so many people like it – It shows us that anything is possible . In fact, after reading this book Steve Jobs decided to create Apple because he believed that what he could accomplish was limitless. Steve Jobs says the book made him believe that “life” was created by people no smarter than him.

Life, its Meaning, and its Purpose

The book delves into the purpose and nature of life. In fact, we can draw many lessons from different chapters and quotes. Firstly, Yogananda talks about the problems and challenges in life and their importance. Yogananda believes that “our trials did not come to punish us, but to awaken us”.

In a way, Yogananda says that instead of seeing challenges as obstacles, he wants us to view them as necessary for development. Yogananda also thinks that believing (in anything) helps in overcoming these disruptions easily.

Next, Yogananda tells us that we are not our mistakes, and he does this beautifully. He asks, “is a diamond less valuable because it’s covered in mud?” Yogananda explains that we are extremely valuable and any shortcomings in us do not make us ‘useless’ or ‘hopeless’. We still have immense capabilities that are untapped.

The Mind and Meditation

The book clearly elaborates on the idea that the mind has extreme power. Yogananda immediately elaborates on a shocking assertion that, “ Incredible amounts of energy are hidden in your brain; enough for a GRAM of flesh to run the city of Chicago for 2 days” . I tried reading up more on this fact and realized that an average chess player loses more calories than an average tennis player.

Even Steve Jobs believes that if we were to just observe our brain for a couple of minutes, we would understand how distracted we are and how much we think.

This evading form of self-analysis too is recommended by Yogananda. He believes that only true self-analysis is a form of progress . If we can’t do so, we are mere robots repeating the same mistakes again and again.

We should never let our minds become the slave of our bodies. Because, if we do so, even the greatest of knowledge is in vain .

To control our minds, Yogananda obviously recommends meditation.

Inner Peace

Yogananda thinks that only true inner peace is good – all desires eventually lead to ruin. He says that human greed has no end to it. In fact, only a decade ago, Rajat Gupta scammed wall street with insider trading only because he wanted to be a billionaire. He accepts that when he became a millionaire, he wanted to be a multi-millionaire and finally a billionaire.

Yogananda compares one lacking peace with a person losing dying of thirst while swimming in freshwater.

I believe this book is a great read and I recommend everybody to read it. The first few chapters can be a bit boring for some but if you continue, you will not be let down. Always believe that anything is possible and that your mind is stronger than you think.

You are one of the greats: West Indies legend Wesley Hall hails Virat Kohli, gifts him his autobiography

Wesley Hall with Virat Kohli. Video grab

Bridgetown (Barbados), June 19

Legendary West Indies pacer Wesley Hall has seen a lot of great batters over the years and in his opinion, Indian superstar Virat Kohli belongs right at the top with the all-time legends of the game.

The 86-year-old from Barbados, who formed a lethal bowling partnership with Charlie Griffith in the 1960s, also feels that the modern day West Indies players can't be expected to turn down million-dollar contracts in franchise cricket though it does impact the health of Test cricket in the region.

In stark contrast to the nomadic life of a current international cricketer, Hall played 48 Tests in a career spanning 16 years.

He was a special guest at the Kensington Oval here on Tuesday when he met members of the Indian team and presented his autobiography to Kohli and head coach Rahul Dravid on the sidelines of their second training session.

Having also served as sports minister of Barbados, the man of many talents reserved humbling words for Kohli in his brief chat with the former India captain.

“You have come to practice and you have to see an old man,” that was how he broke the ice with the Indian mainstay.

“I have seen a lot of great players and you are one of them. I have followed your career and I hope you play for India for many more years,” said the 86-year-old.

If I am from the proletariat, can't refuse IPL millions

T20 cricket in the West Indies seems to be in good health but the same can't be said about Tests, the only format Hall played and excelled at.

The Caribbean icon feels the administrators need to find a way to prevent a mass exodus from the longest format.

“Well, I would say that if your date is today, I'm not concerned. But if you told me two years ago, I was very concerned. And that's what happens,” he said when asked about the state of the red-ball game in the region.

“You just need to get some players who will stick with you. I mean, at one time, we had some great players, but they weren't playing Test cricket. But that's the problem, you see.

“If I am from the proletariat, I don't have any money and somebody offered me a million dollars for four years, well then I could not really refuse it. So we have to sort of deal with it in such a way that it doesn't happen every day,” said Hall.

Asked about his views on how the game has changed over the years, Hall said he doesn't like the fact that cricket has become batter-friendly.

“Well, one has to be aware that things will change. Now we are wondering what's happening, especially if you go into the area where you play the game of 20 overs. There are certain things that I wonder about.

“I just wonder why would batsmen be able to bat through the whole innings, the bowlers are restricted to four bowlers. I often ask that.”

Hall, who is 6'5", believes a good fast bowler has to be at least six feet. He is also a fan of Jasprit Bumrah and is impressed with the pace talent in India.

“Earlier you had only Kapil Dev, now you have so many,” he remarked.

“You have to remember that immediately after we left the scene, you know, we had about two fast bowlers in the West Indies. Some of them couldn't get in the side. We need to look for some good pacemen.

“I like a paceman that is six foot. When you put a ball in the slip corner, like how Big Bird Joel Garner used to do it, and (Curtly) Ambrose. These fellows, they bowl and they're able to get that bounce,” said Hall.

New Delhi: Legendary West Indies pacer Wesley Hall lavished huge praise on ace batter Virat Kohli when he visited the Indian cricket team at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday. Hall also presented his autobiography to the likes of Kohli, head coach Rahul Dravid, and captain Rohit Sharma. The former lethal pacer shared a heartwarming moment with Kohli, lauding him for his excellence and revealing that he thoroughly follows his career.

Hall was a special guest at the venue where Team India held their second training session ahead of the Super 8 clash against Afghanistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup. In a brief chat with Kohli, he opined that he has seen a lot of great batters over the years and Kohli belongs right at the top with the legends of the game.

The ex-sports minister of Barbados reserved humbling words for Kohli saying, “You have come to practice and you have to see an old man. I have seen a lot of great players and you are one of them. I have followed your career and I hope you play for India for many more years,” the legendary paceman said.

Kohli gets words of appreciation

The clips of his meeting with Team India and specifically with Kohli are making rounds on social media and in one such video, he can be seen conversing with Kohli about his stats. Kohli has 80 international centuries to his credit and Sir Wesley Hall very well remembers the fact, like a Kohli fanboy. After handing him his autobiography “Answering the Call”, Hall wished the ex-India skipper luck to get to 100 centuries.

“I follow your stats… so I know you’re on 80. Get to 100 centuries,” Hall said and Kohli gave a chuckling “Yes” as the reply.

  • India will face Afghanistan at Barbados on June 20

Star India cricketer Virat Kohli met West Indies legend Sir Wesley Hall at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Kohli shared a heart-warming interaction with the 86-year-old West Indies legend after the team's practice session in Barbados. Kohli also received a signed book from Hall as they were clicked by the media at the stadium. Kohli is currently with the Indian team at the Caribbean island for the T20 World Cup 2024.

The Indian team arrived in Barbados after completing their US leg of the marquee tournament. Kohli has not been in the best of form in the T20 World Cup 2024 so far. The batter, who was asked to open alongside Rohit Sharma, has managed to score only 5 runs in 3 matches. Kohli has been India's top-run scorer in T20 World Cups since 2014. However, he has been dismissed at the scores of 1, 4 and 0 against Ireland, Pakistan and the USA. However, certain experts have showcased their trust in Kohli and have backed him to do well in the West Indies leg.

Kohli's form in T20 World Cup 2024

"Yeah, I think he's just in America. I think he's relying on the other players to get him through there. But I think he's really got to step up over in the Caribbean. And I think the likes of Mitchell Starc and other left-arm bowlers bowling to Virat Kohli, he'll be looking for that ball to come in. The one, the straight one is the one, it worries me because he's been playing away from his body a little bit of late," Brad Hogg told Star Sports.
