Being a grad student is hard on its own. There is so much pressure and responsibilities that just fall on your shoulders. However, as all of your hard work was not enough to graduate, you also must complete one final paper. Now, a dissertation is no ordinary paper. First, it should demonstrate all the skills and knowledge that a grad student accommodated during their years of studies. Next, it should be informative and valuable for academia. Hence, a student should come up with a unique and original idea.

Choosing between great public administration dissertation topics is not an easy task. Though, it’s possible. All you need is a good approach and determination. Also, if you ever hit the dead end, you can always look for some tips and suggestions online. This guide is one of such online helpers. Let’s see what it has to offer.

What Is Public Administration?

So, public administration is responsible for all the governing systems of a state. It is the area that helps to organize and coordinate government operations. This discipline is essential for the healthy functioning of states and cities. It brings order and control to the system. However, this area also has numerous responsibilities which are hard to remember at first. This is because it operates on multiple levels and covers so many various structures and fields. Overall, this area of study can give you limitless ideas to write about.

How to Choose Topics in Public Administration

Choosing ideas for paper writing is never an easy task. It requires a lot of time, effort, and erudition. Hence, first of all, each graduate student should be well aware of current public administration issues. Students should show their deep knowledge of the issues they are describing. So, when choosing, you can first pick the area of study you feel most comfortable at; for example, it can be immigration, healthcare, drug control, or else.

Next, think of the issues that you are most interested to talk about or that seem to be most relevant at the moment. Can you bring something new to the discussion? Will your work change the perception of those issues? Can it be the ground for further research and exploration? Your goal here is to create a meaningful and useful piece of work that other scholars can further use in their writing. It’s not only about grades anymore but about being of use to your fellow colleagues.

Yet, your idea can even come from your previous essays. For instance, you can easily look for public administration research paper topics and use them for your graduation work. The only difference between them is that the latter should have a more narrow and nuanced take on things.

Choosing the right dissertation topic is a critical step in the research process. A well-thought-out and relevant topic captivates the readers and lays a strong foundation for a successful and impactful dissertation. By considering the topic’s significance and aligning it with personal interests and expertise, researchers can embark on a journey that leads to meaningful contributions to their field of study.

What Is the Difference Between a Thesis and a Dissertation?

The main difference between these two projects is that master’s degree students write a thesis, while doctoral degree programs require a dissertation. Another difference is that a dissertation needs an oral defense, while a thesis doesn’t. Finally, a typical master’s thesis has around 40-80 pages, in contrast to a dissertation with 100-300 pages.

What Are the Best Topics for Thesis?

To choose the best topic for your thesis, you can use the FINER criteria. The acronym FINER stands for feasible, interesting, novel, ethical, and relevant. Moreover, your chosen topic should be manageable, meaning you should have enough time and sources to do profound research.

How to Choose a Dissertation Topic?

To choose a dissertation topic, you should start with more general areas of your interest. Then research the literature sources to see what topics are understudied so that you can make your scientific contribution. The next step is to narrow down your topic and check if it fits your institution’s requirements.

How to Title a Thesis?

Choosing a compelling title for your thesis is essential if you want your paper to stand out. Remember that it should be informative and let the readers know what to expect from your writing. Avoid acronyms, abbreviations, and initials because they aren’t allowed in thesis titles. Make your title clear and concise.

How Long Should a Dissertation Title Be?

A dissertation title should be directly related to the topic and give the information to readers quickly. The general recommendations are that the dissertation title should not exceed 10-12 words or 120 characters. However, you should always consult your university guidelines since the requirements may vary.

Thesis: The Impacts of Simplifying Science and How to Achieve Understanding

Editor's note:

Logan Hunt defended her Barrett Honors College thesis entitled, "The Impacts of Simplifying Science and How to Achieve Understanding" in Spring 2023 in front of committee members Jane Maienschein and Risa Schnebly.  https://keep.lib.asu.edu/items/183942

Simplifying science means more than just making science understandable for people of lower chronological age, it also encompasses making science more accessible to people with a lower educational age. Through their “Embryo Tales,” Ask a Biologist discusses topics such as fetal alcohol syndrome, ectopic pregnancies, polio, etc. and the science behind them in an easy-to-understand manner. The Ask a Biologist materials are directed at a younger audience in terms of educational age compared to most textbooks and other sources, which allows them to communicate information to people who otherwise may not comprehend the science at hand. As Ask a Biologist states, their main goal is to “increase communication between scientists and the public” (Ask a biologist). They increase the cognition of the public by using a readability level checker to keep each sentence easy to understand, implementing well thought-out analogies throughout the article, incorporating helpful pictures, and including an engaging, related story at the beginning of each article. This thesis explains studies both for and agains those techniques aiming to make science-related topics more understandable. The thesis encompasses some of my own Embryo Tales with an analysis of them, highlights my role in shaping Embryo Tales into what they are today, and also details how I will apply what I learned to my career as a future physician.

FDA Approves and Authorizes Updated mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines to Better Protect Against Currently Circulating Variants

FDA News Release

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved and granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) to include a monovalent (single) component that corresponds to the Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have been updated with this formula to more closely target currently circulating variants and provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death. Today’s actions relate to updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by ModernaTX Inc. and Pfizer Inc.

In early June, the FDA advised manufacturers of licensed and authorized COVID-19 vaccines that the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) should be monovalent JN.1 vaccines. Based on the further evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and a rise in cases of COVID-19, the agency subsequently determined and advised manufacturers that the preferred JN.1-lineage for the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) is the KP.2 strain, if feasible.

“Vaccination continues to be the cornerstone of COVID-19 prevention,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “These updated vaccines meet the agency’s rigorous, scientific standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality. Given waning immunity of the population from previous exposure to the virus and from prior vaccination, we strongly encourage those who are eligible to consider receiving an updated COVID-19 vaccine to provide better protection against currently circulating variants.”

The updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines include Comirnaty and Spikevax, both of which are approved for individuals 12 years of age and older, and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, both of which are authorized for emergency use for individuals 6 months through 11 years of age.

What You Need to Know

  • Unvaccinated individuals 6 months through 4 years of age are eligible to receive three doses of the updated, authorized Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or two doses of the updated, authorized Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine.
  • Individuals 6 months through 4 years of age who have previously been vaccinated against COVID-19 are eligible to receive one or two doses of the updated, authorized Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines (timing and number of doses to administer depends on the previous COVID-19 vaccine received).
  • Individuals 5 years through 11 years of age regardless of previous vaccination are eligible to receive a single dose of the updated, authorized Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines; if previously vaccinated, the dose is administered at least 2 months after the last dose of any COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Individuals 12 years of age and older are eligible to receive a single dose of the updated, approved Comirnaty or the updated, approved Spikevax; if previously vaccinated, the dose is administered at least 2 months since the last dose of any COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Additional doses are authorized for certain immunocompromised individuals ages 6 months through 11 years of age as described in the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine fact sheets.

Individuals who receive an updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccine may experience similar side effects as those reported by individuals who previously received mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and as described in the respective prescribing information or fact sheets. The updated vaccines are expected to provide protection against COVID-19 caused by the currently circulating variants. Barring the emergence of a markedly more infectious variant of SARS-CoV-2, the FDA anticipates that the composition of COVID-19 vaccines will need to be assessed annually, as occurs for seasonal influenza vaccines.

For today’s approvals and authorizations of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, the FDA assessed manufacturing and nonclinical data to support the change to include the 2024-2025 formula in the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The updated mRNA vaccines are manufactured using a similar process as previous formulas of these vaccines. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to hundreds of millions of people in the U.S., and the benefits of these vaccines continue to outweigh their risks.

On an ongoing basis, the FDA will review any additional COVID-19 vaccine applications submitted to the agency and take appropriate regulatory action.

The approval of Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) (2024-2025 Formula) was granted to BioNTech Manufacturing GmbH. The EUA amendment for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine (2024-2025 Formula) was issued to Pfizer Inc.

The approval of Spikevax (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) (2024-2025 Formula) was granted to ModernaTX Inc. and the EUA amendment for the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine (2024-2025 Formula) was issued to ModernaTX Inc.

Rubio, Scott call fast-tracking of Florida state park golf course plan ‘ridiculous’

  • Max Chesnes Times staff
  • Emily L. Mahoney Times staff

In a scathing letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis Friday, Republican U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott joined local officials in criticizing the rushed process behind state plans to develop golf courses on Jonathan Dickinson State Park on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

The officials called a scheduled one-hour hearing at 3 p.m. Tuesday for the public to weigh in “absolutely ridiculous,” adding that “not one” member of a state committee that is responsible for voting on the plan would attend the meeting to hear the public’s concerns.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection planned to hold near-simultaneous meetings around the state Tuesday afternoon for the public to comment on its designs to add golf courses, 350-room lodges, pickleball courts, disc golf courses and more to nine state parks. After these meetings, a state committee called the Acquisition and Restoration Council would have voted on whether to move forward.

“We believe every voting member of the (Acquisition and Restoration Council) must attend a public comment meeting before taking any action regarding the proposal,” the letter reads. “An hour-long meeting on a weekday afternoon when most people are at work will not suffice.”

Hours after the letter was released, the department posted on social media that it would be postponing all the public meetings about the state park plans.

“Due to the overwhelming interest with the 2024-25 Great Outdoors Initiative, (the Department of Environmental Protection) is looking for new venues to accommodate the public,” the agency wrote on X. It said new meeting dates would be announced soon, most likely for the week of Sept. 2.

The letter from Scott, Rubio and other officials focused primarily on the process for allowing the public to weigh in on the proposal at Jonathan Dickinson rather than comment more broadly on the DeSantis administration’s designs for amenities in nine parks total. Since they were revealed earlier this week, the plans have brought an unusually swift and crushing wave of bipartisan blowback.

While the DeSantis administration has doubled down on the proposal, it said Friday that officials would ensure better opportunities for public input. Its social media post included a link for a website where Floridians can submit suggestions on the plans.

Jonathan Dickinson is home to the largest amount of protected scrub-jay habitat in Southeast Florida. The Department of Environmental Protection has said it would “minimize” the impact to sensitive habitats. It posted on social media Friday that one of the pickleball courts in Broward County’s Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park would be built on land that’s already a parking lot.

In the Tampa Bay area, Hillsborough River State Park and Pinellas’ Honeymoon Island are also slated to get pickleball courts.

Jeremy Redfern, a DeSantis spokesperson, has said that the additional amenities would make the parks “more accessible to the public.”

This is not Sen. Scott’s first brush with public outrage on this topic. In 2011, when Scott was governor, he played a role in a similar plan to build golf courses on state parks, the Tampa Bay Times reported at the time. Proposed legislation had reportedly emerged after discussions between golfer Jack Nicklaus and Scott, Nicklaus’ lobbyist said then.

In a statement to the Times, Nicklaus Companies and Nicklaus Design said they have no involvement in any current proposals.

The letter demanded two meetings, one in Stuart and one in Jupiter, “both for as long as it takes to hear all concerns.” It suggested holding them after Thanksgiving, when more part-time residents will be in Florida for the winter, to give the process more “credibility.”

U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, R-Stuart, who represents the district that includes Jonathan Dickinson State Park, also signed on to the letter. Earlier this week, Mast urged voting members of the Acquisition and Restoration Council to attend the public meeting scheduled for Tuesday so they could be eye-to-eye with the residents affected by the proposed development. In a phone interview Friday, Mast said he had yet to hear a response from a single council member.

“They’re going to try and develop something without disturbing it? How about they just don’t disturb it,” Mast said.

In addition to Scott, Rubio and Mast, 12 other Treasure Coast officials signed the letter, including state Sen. Gayle Harrell, Reps. Toby Overdorf and John Snyder, and county commissioners from Martin and Palm Beach counties.

Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Department of Commerce (DOC).

Notice of public meeting.

This notice sets forth the schedule and proposed agenda for a meeting of the Ocean Exploration Advisory Board (OEAB). OEAB members will discuss and provide advice on the Federal ocean exploration program, with a particular emphasis on the topics identified in the section on Matters to Be Considered.

The announced meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024 from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. (EDT).

This will be a virtual meeting. Information about how to observe virtually will be posted to the OEAB website at https://oeab.noaa.gov/ .

Mr. David Turner, Designated Federal Officer, Ocean Exploration Advisory Board, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, [email protected] or (859) 327-9661.

NOAA established the OEAB under the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) and legislation that gives the agency statutory authority to operate an ocean ( print page 68864) exploration program and to coordinate a national program of ocean exploration. The OEAB advises NOAA leadership on strategic planning, exploration priorities, competitive ocean exploration grant programs, and other matters as the NOAA Administrator requests.

OEAB members represent government agencies, the private sector, academic institutions, and not-for-profit institutions involved in all facets of ocean exploration—from advanced technology to public engagement.

In addition to advising NOAA leadership, NOAA expects the OEAB to help to define and develop a national program of ocean exploration—a network of stakeholders and partnerships advancing national priorities for ocean exploration.

One of the OEAB's authorized duties is to annually review the quality and effectiveness of the programs' proposal review processes.

Matters To Be Considered: The OEAB will be briefed on the status of the NOAA Ocean Exploration's competitive grants programs; have an opportunity to inquire about them in detail; and provide recommendations. The program's annual competitive grant awards include funding for interdisciplinary and innovative ocean exploration related projects, in addition to grant awards for education and outreach efforts.

The agenda and other meeting materials will be made available on the OEAB website at https://oeab.noaa.gov/ .

Status: The meeting will be open to the public via remote access. Please check the agenda on the OEAB website to confirm the public comment period schedule.

The OEAB expects that public statements at its meetings will not be repetitive of previously submitted verbal or written statements. In general, each individual or group making a verbal presentation will be limited to three minutes. The Designated Federal Officer must receive written comments by Sept. 9, 2024, to provide sufficient time for OEAB review. Written comments received after Sept. 9, 2024, will be distributed to the OEAB but may not be reviewed prior to the meeting date. Comments should be submitted to Designated Federal Officer [email protected] .

Special Accommodations: Requests for sign language interpretation or other auxiliary aids should be directed to the Designated Federal Officer by Sept. 9, 2024.

Sweeping Raids, Giant Camps and Mass Deportations: Inside Trump’s 2025 Immigration Plans

If he regains power, Donald Trump wants not only to revive some of the immigration policies criticized as draconian during his presidency, but expand and toughen them.

Former President Donald J. Trump is planning an extreme expansion of his first-term crackdown on immigration if he returns to power in 2025 — including preparing to round up undocumented people already in the United States on a vast scale and detain them in sprawling camps while they wait to be expelled.

The plans would sharply restrict both legal and illegal immigration in a multitude of ways.

Mr. Trump wants to revive his first-term border policies, including banning entry by people from certain Muslim-majority nations and reimposing a Covid 19-era policy of refusing asylum claims — though this time he would base that refusal on assertions that migrants carry other infectious diseases like tuberculosis.

He plans to scour the country for unauthorized immigrants and deport people by the millions per year.

To help speed mass deportations, Mr. Trump is preparing an enormous expansion of a form of removal that does not require due process hearings. To help Immigration and Customs Enforcement carry out sweeping raids, he plans to reassign other federal agents and deputize local police officers and National Guard soldiers voluntarily contributed by Republican-run states.

To ease the strain on ICE detention facilities, Mr. Trump wants to build huge camps to detain people while their cases are processed and they await deportation flights. And to get around any refusal by Congress to appropriate the necessary funds, Mr. Trump would redirect money in the military budget, as he did in his first term to spend more on a border wall than Congress had authorized.

A side view of Stephen Miller as he stands and gives a speech.
