I’m very excited to share my new resource, which was one of my favorite member’s requests to date…speech therapy monthly calendars!

This idea came at the perfect time as I have been reflecting, researching, and creating materials that support home practice and encourage generalization in a fun, manageable way. We want our kids to maintain progress over summer but we don’t want to cause burnout. It is a fine line!

speech homework calendars

Speech Therapy Burnout

For children in speech therapy, extended breaks can lead to regression. We don’t want that!

However, we don't want to cause burnout either! As I have been dealing with burnout in my own personal life, I see that we ALL NEED A BREAK from time to time.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the principles of motor learning, how to create and maintain new motor habits, burnout, the overscheduled child, etc… and how they all relate to each other. It’s quite fascinating really!

I decided, as June fast approaches, it is more important than ever to enjoy the slow pace of summer, unplug from all of our screens, connect with each other, AND have some fun, natural speech and language practice.

To accomplish this, families and students need our guidance and resources.

This summer, we DON'T WANT TO:

  • Add complicated, time consuming tasks to already busy lives
  • Make families feel bad for taking breaks from home practice/therapy sessions
  • Add more pressure to stressed out kids

This summer, we DO WANT TO:

  • Show how we can model speech and language EASILY during daily activities
  • Provide practice ideas that are easy, quick, and fun
  • Tailor home practice ideas to specific needs and interests of each child
  • Provide parents with resources so they feel capable of continuing practice throughout the summer.
  • Set realistic goals!

Speech Therapy Homework Calendars

The request for speech therapy homework calendars came at the perfect time! What a great idea!

I had a lot of fun making these homework calendars. I completed an articulation calendar and a language calendar for both June and July in both English and Spanish. I tried my best to make the ideas quick, fun, and easy to do. I also sprinkled in days of rest and relaxation. It is summer after all!

Here's how they work:

  • Variety of Activities: Each month, the calendar features a range of activities targeting either articulation or language skills. These activities may include naming a few flashcards, going on a fun scavenger hunt, playing game of charades, reading, drawing with chalk, etc….
  • Progress Tracking: Clients are encouraged to track their progress by marking off completed activities on the calendar. This visual representation of progress can be highly motivating and rewarding.
  • Incorporating Daily Routines: Homework calendars should integrate speech practice into daily routines. Whether it's practicing sounds while getting ready in the morning or playing word games during family game night, these activities become part of everyday life.
  • Family Involvement: Homework calendars provide an opportunity to involve family members in the therapy process. Parents can support their child's speech practice at home, fostering a collaborative approach. Also, parents will learn how to easily support practice at home!

speech homework calendars

**Great for preschool, elementary, and school-aged students.  I created this articulation calendar so that I could assign it to my students ranging from  kindergarten  to  fifth grade.

*The days for each month vary, but your resource doesn’t have to!  Each target is included in calendar form for: 28 days, 29 days (leap year), 30 days, and 31 days. Calendars are organized by the number of days for a specific month. This makes it easier for you to find the articulation calendar page you would like to assign to your student. For example, there are 31 days in May. I would first open the folder marked “31 Days Later Sounds” and locate the target phoneme within the PDF file. It is that simple!

Homework Just Got Easier! Let me   show   you   how:

1.Use this as your  staple product  while supplementing with other homework activities you already have!

2. REUSABLE- You won’t find months or years on this calendar! Use the same product repeatedly!

3.Contains articulation practice for  EARLY SOUND, LATER SOUNDS, APRAXIA OF SPEECH, AND PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSES  for everyday of the month.

4.Students can color the B&W images as they practice their sounds.

5.Send home at the beginning of each month.

6. Each calendar  includes visual supports  to encourage  MLU expansion . You can make a star or mark next to a visual support that you would like your students to use while practicing their targets (simple phrases/sentence).

7. A  word list  is included at the bottom of page for easy reference.

8. Students can hang their monthly calendars on their  refrigerators  and say their targets every time they reach for something inside.

9.Students can hang their monthly calendars on the  bathroom mirror  to practice their target sounds while washing their hands.

10.Place the calendar on the  back of a car seat  to practice target sounds while riding to school, etc.

11.Place the calendars inside the student’s  speech folder  and practice the words for each day at the beginning or end of session to make for simple and fast progress monitoring.

Phonemes are targeted in all word positions individually and mixed for each calendar month!

  • P  (initial, medial, final, mixed)
  • B  (initial, medial, final, mixed)
  • M  (initial, medial, final, mixed)
  • N  (initial, medial, final, mixed)

EASY Summer Speech and Language Homework Ideas

This year, I’m sending home speech and language bags with each student on my caseload. The kids have helped put them together for the past week or so and are incredibly invested in the idea! Check out what I put in each bag below.

speech therapy summer homework examples

{articulation}

My articulation bags were SO easy. To assemble them, I printed off June, July, and August calendars for each student. I stapled them together with simple directions to practice their speech words as many times as possible during the summer. Some of my older students set their own goal (e.g., Practice 60 times this summer!). For each day they practice, they can put an X on their calendar to keep track! I also included stickers for my younger students. I told them if they practice 5x in a week, they earn a sticker!

What will they practice you might be wondering? Simple. I printed off pages from my Articulation Mini Cards product and included them in their speech bags. These sheets contain 35 picture cards for each target (e.g., final /p/). My students are pretty familiar with them. For students at the phrase/sentence level, I included carrier phrases to practice with! I also printed and included pages from the following products:

Articulation Words by Theme (contains summer themed articulation words sorted by sound)

Summer Themed Speech and Language Packet (contains several b&w articulation worksheets, I left them blank for parent to fill in words from the word lists I included)

In each student’s bag was a Ziploc baggie containing 2 pieces of colored chalk, a cute note, and ideas for using chalk to target their speech sounds this summer !

I also plan to send home their working folders. There are several completed activities in each so that the student’s can continue to practice/use them at home during the summer months.

My language bags were a bit more individualized (as they should be), however were still fairly straight forwards and easy. Each language student got the same bag of chalk containing 2 colored pieces, a cute note, and ideas for targeting WH questions or associations. You can grab this printable FOR FREE here .

IMG_0863

All of the other activities and such were individual for each student based on their goals, however below are some activities from TpT that I used A TON of for summer homework:

Summer Themed Speech and Language Packet (easy b&w printables)

Don’t Wake the Monster Bundle (great activity my students made and can play with family this summer)

Summer Preschool Parent Handouts (ideas for targeting speech and language in play)

For my students who utilize AAC, I included a list of vocabulary words the student used during a single session. I won’t be back at my school next year and thought this would help any incoming person who might see the student. I wrote words they can use independently, with minimal cues, etc… I also wrote what types of cues are most effective. I sent this home with ideas for targeting words they are most successful with! I also sent home chalk bags that I referenced in my note containing ideas for how to use chalk with their AAC systems! Easy peasy!

For all of my students, I also included their last progress note of the year in an envelope with a cute label I designed on the Avery online template system!

Hope this helps! Are your parents interested in summer homework? What do you send home?

{thanks for reading}

Such a wonderful idea! I would love to do something like this but am afraid parents would just trash everything. I hate to “waste” money. A few students and families would definitely practice and enjoy the idea 🙂

Thank you! I am lucky to be part of a school district with a very active parent community! Most parents asked for summer homework so I decided to do it for everybody! I would hate putting effort in for it to get thrown away though too!

Hey Shannon, love your ideas and the heart behind them all. I have a few artic students that don’t have their sounds well enough to practice at home. Two kindergarteners with lateralized stridents and a few students working on vocalic r. They can get their sounds with a lot of support from me, but practicing independently they just don’t have it. I worry about sending material home for practice and them practicing incorrectly. What are your thoughts?

April 25, 2017 at 9:31 AM

I, personally, do not send homework home for those students because I don’t want them practicing the incorrect production over and over. Hope that helps!

Where did you find your little bags to send everything home in? Gallon size ziplock bags aren’t quite big enough to hold the papers.

I bought them on Amazon here: http://amzn.to/2qaoW9C Hope that helps! 🙂

I really love this idea after trying several different things over the years. One question, do you provide any incentive for kids who return their packet?

May 18, 2017 at 8:52 AM

I was not returning to this school for the following year (I was contracted) so I did not, however think that would be a fantastic idea!

Throughout the school year, I also joke with my students that their real speech and language homework every week is to…get outside and be active! Just experiencing all the fun summer has to offer will help students build language skills, increase social thinking, and strengthen vocabulary.

However, we know not all of our students are able to experience the outdoors or go to on a variety of different outings. Check out these themed summer weeks and ultimate summer activity bucket list to encourage playtime while increase speech and language skills.

Hi, when I go to print the Printable BW version the images come out fuzzy and not at all clear. When I print the colored one, its crystal clear. Can I get help with the BW version? Thanks!

Melissa Berg

Tuesday 26th of July 2022

Hi Hailey, Thanks so much for reaching out! I tried printing the BW and it is very slightly fuzzy on my end. I'm wondering if you try taking the color version and simply printing that one in BW instead. All my best, Melissa

Hi Jenny, At the bottom of this post, there is a form to put your name and email address to have the free planner emailed to you in a zip file. If you don't see the email you might want to check your spam or junk folders. All my best, Melissa

speech homework calendars

According to one of Hudson’s former college classmates, Hudson and the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach bonded over philosophy and her logic homework, TMZ reported last week.

The reported new couple first met on a plane flight from Boston to Florida in 2021, when the former New England Patriots head coach was 69 and the former competitive cheerleader, beauty school graduate and beauty pageant contestant was majoring in philosophy at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, Page Six also reported.

Belichick, a father of three and grandfather of six, got to talking with Hudson, specifically about her homework for a philosophy class, the classmate told TMZ. Hudson had a textbook, “Deductive Logic,” which apparently attracted Belichick’s attention.

Before the plane landed, Belichick and Hudson exchanged contact information and he autographed her textbook, signing it, “Jordan, Thanks for giving me a course in logic! Safe travels!” Belichick also wrote the years of his Super Bowl wins below.

The classmate shared a photo with TMZ of the note that the legendary coach left for Hudson in the textbook.

Following their meeting, Hudson and Belichick stayed in contact, discussing her school work and her cheerleading routines.

News of their rumored love affair first surfaced last week. A source told TMZ that Hudson and Belichick only became romantically involved after he broke up with Linda Holliday, his partner of more than 10 years.

TMZ’s sources said that Belichick’s split from Holiday actually occurred quietly during the 2022 season, after which he and Hudson became more than just friends. She also quietly supported the coach at his games at Gillette Stadium throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Page Six said that relationship is more than “a fling,” and Belichick has recently begun to include her in his business endeavors. She accompanied him on a work trip to Croatia and to Tom Brady’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony, while he was spotted rooting her on at a cheerleading competition in March, TMZ said.

Hudson was a competitive cheerleader at Bridgewater State University and even won a national championship title with the squad in 2021, Page Six reported. But she kept up the sport after graduating, competing at the competition in March that Belichick attended. As a beauty pageant queen, Hudson competed in the Miss Maine USA pageant, being named as the first runner-up.

Senate Finance Democrats look to raise revenue for 2025 tax cliff

Wyden sought to contrast Democrats’ positions to Republicans, who have said they’d like to see the expiring provisions extended. GOP leadership is starting to formulate a plan for a reconciliation package that would bypass the need for 60 votes in the Senate in the event of a GOP sweep in November’s elections.

“The American people deserve better than a Trump tax bill that drives up inflation, and it drives up inflation because it basically gives breaks on all these billionaires, and we have a very different kind of approach,” Wyden said. “The Senate Republicans have already made it very clear. I’ve looked at their statements, that they’re gonna go it alone, they’re gonna make no bones about it.”

Individual tax breaks, the treatment of money U.S. corporations make abroad and small-business deductions are set to expire at the end of next year. While the individual tax breaks included in the 2017 law lowered the rates for the wealthy, rates also dropped for the middle and working classes. The law nearly doubled the standard deduction and increased the maximum child tax credit.

That means that at least some of the individual tax breaks from 2017 will have to be extended if Biden is to keep his pledge to avoid raising taxes on those making less than $400,000.

Wyden said he would honor Biden’s pledge, but at least one Democrat leaving the meeting was noncommittal on that issue.

“We’re going to have a lot of decisions to make about extending cuts or not. We haven’t made decisions about that yet,” Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., said of the president’s $400,000 campaign pledge.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., at a speech at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth earlier this week, said Democrats should walk away from any tax deal next year that doesn’t raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

“Better to let all the Trump tax cuts expire than be accomplices to another slash-and-burn tax bonanza for America’s billionaires,” she said Monday.

David Lerman contributed to this report.
