Full course description

Twelve weeks are dedicated to the internship and to writing the bachelor’s thesis in the bachelor’s phase of the Biomedical Sciences programme. The internship focuses on becoming acquainted with research, meaning that the student gains experience in performing biomedical scientific research, preferably within an existing study. This (sub-)study is the basis for the written product, known as the bachelor's thesis. After submission of the thesis, the student is defending the thesis in an oral inquiry ('Defence'). The internship, the thesis and the defence are graded.

An internship within FHML (Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences) or MUMC+ (Maastricht University Medical Centre Plus) is considered an internal internship; any other internship is considered an external internship. The term 'FHML’ is used in the rest of this document to indicate both FHML and MUMC+ for the sake of brevity. An internship within FHML is supervised by the 'faculty supervisor’ i.e. the ‘first assessor’ (examiner). This supervisor must meet the requirements as stated in the exam regulations. Besides the faculty supervisor, there can be one or more daily supervisors. For internships outside FHML, a student has one or more external supervisors besides the faculty supervisor. The thesis will be assessed by the faculty supervisor and by an independent second assessor. The internship coordinator for the Bachelor Biomedical Sciences is the first contact person for the student for questions concerning the preparation and content of an internal or external internship. The coordinator will provide information on the internship by means of a lecture: the possibilities and impossibilities, the procedure, the conditions, etc.

Dual career PhD programme information

phd defence maastricht university

The dual career PhD programme aims to support fellows in setting up, carrying out and finishing a research project leading to a PhD, alongside their regular job. The programme is offered at our institute in Maastricht, leading to a doctoral degree awarded by Maastricht University upon successful defence of the dissertation. Please note that participants will not be employed by Maastricht University.

The institute currently hosts about 50 dual career PhD candidates, who are an integral part of the UNU-MERIT community. The programme provides advanced training in the knowledge and skills relevant to the UNU-MERIT research agenda.  The programme is particularly interested in attracting professionals who conduct research in their job and have a strong research orientation and/or background.

The first year of the programme (September 2024 – June 2025)

The first year requires participants to undertake part-time research and interact with staff members and potential supervisors during the year to develop their PhD research proposal in detail and identify a supervisor for the PhD trajectory.

To support the fellows in achieving these objectives, the first year programme foresees two obligatory two-week workshops in Maastricht (four weeks in total, two weeks in September and two weeks in March), as well as two one-day workshops online, in November and June. During the Maastricht workshops, you attend the annual UNU-MERIT Internal Conference organised in September and the PhD research week in March.  During these events that mark important moments in the PhD-trajectory, the entire research community is present, including also the full-time track PhD fellows and senior staff members. You can engage in networking to identify scholars with matching interests. You attend peer presentations, trainings and lectures to raise your research skills and support you in the research proposal development.

The workshops require a temporary (two-week) but full-time investment. It is not recommended to combine workshop activities with work duties. Times of the workshops are set and cannot be changed based on participant preferences. The content of the course modules and the workshop programme will be communicated at the start of the programme.

We expect fellows to prepare a detailed PhD proposal during year one, which is presented during the workshops in Maastricht and online and discussed with you and the staff at UNU-MERIT. This proposal will be submitted to a review committee that evaluates the proposal against criteria of academic quality, fit with the institute’s research focus, the presence of a solid supervisory team and feasibility of the study. Based on the proposal evaluation, the continuation in the programme is decided.

After the first year (September 2025 onwards)

In the subsequent years, you mainly work on your dissertation at your pace and in collaboration with your supervisors, meeting online on a regular basis and exchanging ideas and work through predefined modes of interaction, online, by email or in person.  You attend two full-time workshops of one week each in Maastricht every year.  During this week you actively participate in the internal conference at UNU-MERIT in September and you participate in the PhD presentations in March.  You spend time working with the supervisor(s) and you attend seminars, skills training, master classes and PhD defences of higher-year fellows. Progress is monitored and evaluated twice a year after each workshop.

Graduation time depends on the time fellows can actually spend on their research and on their research expertise before joining the programme. Our fastest graduate completed the degree within 3 years and our slowest graduate took 8,5 years. Average graduation time is 5 years (including the first year).

In addition to the compulsory modules designed for the dual career track, you are welcome to attend and participate, depending on your time and logistical constraints, in the PhD courses of the full-time PhD track and the seminar series with weekly seminar speakers.   You can also be a visiting PhD fellow for a somewhat longer period in agreement with your supervisor, e.g. to finalise a chapter or prepare the defence.

Programme flexibility

The dual career PhD programme allows for maximal flexibility, without jeopardising academic rigour and standards. To allow individual participants to combine their coursework with their professional life or with their research ambitions and needs, the PhD Programme Director can make adjustments to the programme which may include rearrangement or replacement of programme elements. This flexibility does not include the option to move face-to-face workshops, nor to participate in workshops online. It does however include the option to be waived certain courses based on existing knowledge as well as fast completion of the first year based on a fully developed and approved proposal at any point in the first year.

From the second year onward, programme milestones and processes are agreed on by participants and the supervisory team on an individual basis – with as the only requirement participation in the 2 workshops in Maastricht each year.

PhD Defence Marie Labussière, on Wednesday 3 November

Posted on October 26, 2021 · 0 Comments

phd defence maastricht university

Marie Labussière will defend her PhD dissertation “ Native born but not yet citizen. Citizenship and educational outcomes of the children of immigrants in the Netherlands ” on Wednesday 3 November at 10.00 in the Aula at Minderbroedersberg 4-6.

Her supervisors are Prof. dr. Maarten Vink (Maastricht University/European University Institute) and Prof. dr. Mark Levels (Maastricht University). Her paranymphs are Imogen Liu and Marloes de Hoon.

You are cordially invited to attend the defence online or in person .

Marie’s dissertation investigates the relationship between citizenship and the educational outcomes of native-born children of immigrants in the Netherlands. As in many countries of the world, children born in the Netherlands do not have rights to the citizenship of their country of birth but instead inherit the citizenship of their parents. Little is known about whether and how such citizenship laws affect their legal status and life course. Based on administrative register data, the dissertation uses quantitative methods to map the patterns of citizenship acquisition among the children of immigrants and to analyse its effects on their educational trajectories and performance. Findings indicate that children who acquired Dutch citizenship have a substantial educational advantage over those who are still foreign citizens. Yet the effects of citizenship are not uniform: Dutch citizenship matters especially when acquired in early childhood, and by families facing structural constraints in the host society. The dissertation therefore provides a better understanding of the relevance of citizenship for children of immigrants, taking into account their life course and family environment.

Two graduate students earn major defense fellowships

Alexander Hedrick and Carly Rowe have each been awarded the Department of Defense honor, which provides three year fellowships to promising young scientists and engineers.

The program, established by Congress in 1989, provides fellowships to up to 500 people across the United States annually and is designed to promote education in science and engineering disciplines relevant to the Department of Defense.

Find out more about our honorees and their research below.

Alexander Hedrick

3rd Year PhD Student

Advisor: Kaushik Jayaram Lab: Animal Inspired Movement and Robotics Laboratory (AIM-RL)

The goal of my research is to advance the capabilities of insect-scale robots. Insects, like many larger animals, are capable of a wide range of abilities like running, walking, jumping, flying, grasping, fitting through tight gaps, and locomoting across different types of surfaces. Inspired by these, many larger scale robots are beginning to execute a number of different actions. However, unlike insects, robots at this scale are typically designed to perform one behavior and fail to accomplish even a close variation of the intended task.  Since insect-scale robots are limited by size, weight, and power restrictions, many designs and solutions that work on larger robots cannot be scaled down to insect size. By leveraging shape-morphing and tuned body compliance, I hope to increase the capabilities of these miniature robots in dynamic, unstructured environments without significantly trading-off for size, weight, or power.

2nd Year PhD Student

Advisor: Greg Rieker Lab: Precision Laser Diagnostics Laboratory

My research focuses on laser absorption spectroscopy using mode-locked mid-infrared frequency combs to simultaneously measure velocity, temperature, pressure, species mole fraction, and mass flux with low uncertainty and high resolution in a scramjet combustor. There are currently no diagnostic tools that can simultaneously measure all of the relevant chemical species that are interacting in the combustor of a hypersonic combustion engine, including water vapor, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and hydroxide. The fluxes of these chemical species are not well known which inhibits computational fluid dynamics (CFD) developers from improving the physics in their models and propulsion engineers from understanding combustion performance. The data provided by the DCS on the chemical species fluxes at different locations in the combustor will inform CFD developers and propulsion engineers and enable the design of sustainable hypersonic engines. My research will aid in fundamental combustion understanding of hypersonic systems, support the study of internal transitional and turbulent wall-bounded flow which is an important pre-requisite for generating sustainable hypersonic flight, and fuel the Air Force’s basic research objective of developing novel measurement techniques that enable accurate and rapid data collection of physical and chemical flow parameters in extreme environments such as hypersonic engines.
