Leadership in Counselor Education for the next generation of Integrative Counselors

The Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision prepares graduates to work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, and practitioners in academic and clinical settings with professional excellence and from a contextualized biblical worldview. This advanced degree in counselor education and supervision enables counselors to shift in identity and skill from clinical practitioners to scholar practitioners, learning the philosophy and skills of teaching and supervision while contributing to the field through advocacy, supervision, leadership, research, and educational instruction. Persons graduating with this doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision will be fully equipped to fulfill God’s purposes as ambassadors of the gospel to burgeoning faith-based and secular graduate counseling programs around the world.

Dr. Seth Scott

Why Choose Columbia International University for this degree program

Columbia International University is unique with its intentionally multi-denominational foundation and deliberate mission focus, providing one of the few PhD in CES from a biblical worldview in the southeast. Drawing from an established and excellent clinical counseling program, the PhD in CES will expand and enhance the reach of counseling training through this train-the-trainer approach in doctoral counselor education.

Overall Benefits of the degree — what you can do with the degree

Counseling addresses issues of identity, meaning, purpose, and belonging, all issues that find their reality within the truth of the gospel and a biblical worldview. This program is uniquely suited to fulfill the mission of CIU within this critical need area by training counselor educators from a biblical worldview to impact the world for Christ as counselor educators in both faith-based and secular counseling programs, as supervisors in clinical settings, as researchers and authors providing insights and integration to address the whole person, and as leaders in the field to promote the focus on the whole person as made in the image of God. Counselor educators are needed, both within our own master of arts in counseling programs, and in hundreds of other faith-based and secular graduate counseling programs around the country and the world. This program has the opportunity to address the mission of God as CIU graduates within this niche in a unique way. Counselor educators are prepared for leadership and impact in clinical counseling, supervision, program evaluation and leadership, research, counseling education, and advocacy for effective change. Through practical experience throughout the program and opportunities for professional practice, PhD students in this program model the program philosophy of head, heart, and hands through excellence in knowledge, character, and skill across the five focal areas in counselor education and supervision.

About Online Doctoral Degree in Counseling Programs

Online doctoral students have plenty of options, but quality and credibility are important when it comes to finding an online PhD. The best online doctor of counseling programs will have proper accreditation:

  • Institutional Accreditation : Accreditation is vital for online doctoral programs. It signifies that the online PhD programs offered by the graduate school are in compliance with the standards of a Department of Education-approved accrediting body. A school must also be accredited in order to offer federal financial aid to its online PhD candidates.

When looking for an online doctoral program, seek out options with accreditation from a colleges and schools commission in your region. This stamp of approval is critical for ensuring the quality and credibility of your online program.

  • Programmatic Accreditation : In addition to institutional accreditation, be sure that you are only considering online doctorate degree programs with programmatic accreditation. In the field of counseling, graduate degree accreditation is typically granted to both master’s degree and doctoral degree programs by CACREP. Look for CACREP accreditation to identify online graduate programs in counseling.
  • Carnegie Classification : The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, or as it is more commonly known, the Carnegie Classification, is a framework for categorizing all accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States. Originally formulated in 1970 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and administered through the University of Indiana’s Center for Postsecondary Research since 2014, the Carnegie Classification is “the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.”

Under this classification, top research universities for doctoral degrees and PhD candidates are identified as either R2: Doctoral Universities for “high research activity” or R1: Doctoral Universities for “very high research activity.” Look for these classifications when considering options for your online Phd programs.

Key Point: The best online doctoral programs will have both institutional and programmatic accreditation.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral-Level Counselor Education

Prospective students will typically be required to submit the following in order to qualify for admission into online counselor PhD programs or related educational programs in psychology:

  • A completed online application
  • Official undergraduate college transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • GRE scores, MAT scores, or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interviews
  • Personal statement or essay
  • Plan of study

Key Point: In most cases, you’ll be eligible to enter a doctoral degree online after earning a bachelor’s degree. However, some specialized online PhD programs may require you to have earned a master’s degree as well. Be sure you’ve completed all required undergraduate and graduate coursework before applying to your doctoral degree program.

Curriculum and Courses

As with other advanced degree and graduate programs, research is the central component of your online counselor education program. This is true for fully online doctorate degrees as well as hybrid degrees combining online education with traditional on-campus courses. Regardless of whether you complete a traditional, hybrid or online program, the typical time to completion is five to seven years.

The typical components of your online counselor education program may include:

Foundational Courses

Core courses will typically include courses aligned with your concentration including family therapy education, clinical counseling, counseling psychology and more. Other foundational courses will focus on research methods, experimental design, training for leadership positions, ethical and legal issues in counseling, and more. You may be able to complete many of these requirements through online classes.

Examinations for PhD Candidacy

Many online doctoral students are required to complete certain examinations to enter into online PhD candidacy. This will typically occur after you’ve completed one to two years of foundational courses.

Dissertation

In most cases, the central component of your online PhD program will be the completion of your dissertation. After gaining status as an online PhD candidate, you will typically work closely with a professorial advisor or mentor to develop an original research question.

This research question will form the basis of your dissertation—an ongoing project designed to address this research question through applied research. While you will work closely with your advisor or mentor, much of your dissertation will be rooted in independent research. This is especially true for students pursuing an online PhD.

Oral Defense

Upon completion of the written portion of your dissertation—which will typically present the findings from your original research project—you will be expected to defend your findings. This “oral defense” will typically be conducted by a commission of professors and experts in your field. PhD candidates in some online degree programs may be able to conduct this defense via teleconferencing.

Teaching Requirements

Some online PhD programs will also include a teaching component, which will require you to work as an adjunct professor or teacher’s assistant in an undergraduate or graduate school. It may be possible for students in the online doctoral degree program to also serve teaching requirements by instructing online students.

Professional Development

Many accredited programs in counseling require PhD candidates to complete a field practicum as well. This will typically be an internship or residency under clinical supervision in the mental health field. For students otherwise completing their PhD through online coursework, one week summer residencies may be available to complete this component.

Key Point: The online PhD in counseling is a research-focused degree. Your dissertation will be a central part of your online doctoral degree program.

Careers for Students Who Complete an Online Doctoral in Counseling

Online PhD in counseling programs are generally terminal degree programs. This means that students who complete an online PhD in counseling program from a regionally accredited institution are generally eligible for top positions and opportunities in their field. Indeed, many practicing marriage and family therapists, substance abuse counselors, and advanced group counseling professionals do engage in counseling practice with just a master’s degree.

However, many of the top earners in the field are those who apply their counseling education to research endeavors for government agencies as well as those who apply their clinical and supervisory skills in post-secondary educational settings.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , these individuals account for the top 10% of earnings in the field. In 2021, the highest earning counseling professionals earned more than $98,000.

These higher earnings are reflective of the rarified professional opportunities that await those with a PhD in counseling. Working professionals who earn an accredited online doctorate may be eligible to work in the following areas.

  • Counseling Practice Research
  • Journal Publishing
  • Post-Secondary Counselor Education
  • Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Mental Health Policy Consultation
  • Clinical Practice
  • Organizational Psychology
  • Conflict Medication

Key Points: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, counseling students with a doctorate will earn more than graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

What’s the difference between online doctoral degrees and online PhD programs?

Technically, a PhD is a type of doctorate degree. This means that all online PhD candidates are doctoral students. By contrast, not all doctoral students are PhD candidates.

The primary distinction is that doctoral students are primarily focused on putting existing theories into practice. Depending on your chosen field, your online doctoral degree may require participation in an educational leadership program, engagement in clinical practice, work as a resident in a nursing program, and much more.

By contrast, online PhD students are focused on creating new knowledge in their area of study. This usually means that online PhD candidates are focused on introducing new theories, creating research projects around these theories, and presenting new findings that demonstrate a mastery of existing knowledge and the insight to introduce new ideas into the field.

Today, more working professionals than ever before are pursuing both online doctoral degrees and online Phd programs.

Growing need for mental health counselors.

The need for mental health counselors is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations nationwide due in part to the fact that health insurance plans have started providing coverage to mental health counseling services.

Today, the country faces a shortage of mental health professionals while the demand for mental health services has never been higher. In fact, 15 of the nation’s 50 states – including California, Connecticut, Florida, and 12 others – are experiencing a shortage of mental health professionals, as defined by the federal government. This means millions of Americans will continue to struggle with mental health issues as a result of the lack of licensed clinical mental health counselors.

Online PhD programs in counselor education and supervision teach students how to become educators and leaders in the counseling profession. Through a blend of didactic learning and hands-on experiences, graduates of these programs will be able to educate and lead new counselors and counselor students; they will also gain an advanced understanding of clinical counseling practice.

Online PhD programs in counseling education and supervision will vary in length, based on each individual student’s pace of progress. Some students finish their PhD in 3.5 years, others take seven years or longer. Generally speaking, these programs include several core courses, a dissertation, internship, and practicum. While much of an online PhD program can be completed remotely, there may be some face-to-face components, either at the program’s physical campus or in a student’s home area.

Online PhD programs in counselor education and supervision usually require applicants to have a master’s degree from an institution accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Most programs also ask their applicants to already be licensed professional counselors. PhD programs themselves should be accredited, too: CACREP accreditation is always preferred, but some programs with regional accreditation may suffice if their curricula align with CACREP standards.

According to a 2020 article in The Professional Counselor , there’s a growing pipeline problem in doctoral counselor education and supervision programs, due to their uneven distribution between states. Online PhD programs can solve that issue, making it easier than ever before for a counselor to become a leader and educator in the profession.

When she was 26, Johnson suffered two separate accidents at work and in a car, leading to various diagnoses by doctors: rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida, and scoliosis. Her life was turned completely upside down a new career path was needed.

Johnson realized she could help people in a different way – through their mental health. She turned to another passion in psychology. After earning a bachelor’s degree, it has led her to one of Methodist University’s newest programs: an online master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling .

“I want to be that advocate and that voice to help the military and African American community,” said Johnson, who considers herself a Korean native before finding a home in Fayetteville. “The online program is allowing me to work on becoming a sound board for future generations.”

Kortney Johnson

Johnson is part of the first class of students taking part in Methodist University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program – an online master’s program that is capturing attention from around the region.

“You’ll find a few similar programs in the region, but they’re all completely in-person or hybrid,” said Dr. Keleigh Blount, director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. “But Methodist University’s program is different because it’s asynchronous and can be completed online.”

Clinical mental health counseling primarily focuses on overall mental well-being and mental health of people – training students to diagnose, plan treatments, and use different therapeutic strategies such as animal assistance therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and more to help people feel at their best.

The two-year program consists of one year of didactic learning that teaches the basics of the profession, how to get licensed, and the concept of developmental approach. After that, students have the opportunity for hands-on learning through a year of clinical work. Since the program is online, students are able to earn 700 hours of clinical work through any clinical mental health counseling site of their choice as long as certain criteria are met.

“Some of our students are in the military and some of our students are parents,” Blount said. “Students are already telling us that they enjoy the asynchronous model and the flexible deadlines. We want them to be healthy and well in this program.”

So far, the program has welcomed students from all the way in Texas to its home state of North Carolina. Johnson, a military spouse, is one of the local students who is able to complete all of her classwork from the comfort of her Fayetteville home.

“Even though I’m an online student, I love the fact that the University still pays attention to me,” Johnson said. “My advisor is my biggest cheerleader. She’ll reach out and tell me how amazing I’m doing and that she’s proud of me. Then, you have the professors who are amazing.”

Methodist University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program currently has the expertise of Blount and Dr. Elisabeth Simpson, clinical placement coordinator for the program. Both continue to work as counselors while teaching and offer expertise in disability, mental health, research, families, the criminal justice system, cancer treatment, and others.

Along with the program’s top-notch faculty and unique learning model is the ability to work with Methodist University’s renowned health sciences programs – such as Physician Assistant Studies , Doctor of Occupational Therapy , Doctor of Physical Therapy , and Nursing .

“One of the beautiful things about our program is that we are building it to be more interdisciplinary than other similar programs,” Blount added. “With the pending medical school coming to Methodist University, we wanted to work with the other health sciences programs to have cross work. We can work with their students on how to handle certain subjects like substance abuse.”

The program can begin pursuing accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP) once the first class of students graduates in May 2025 – a time that Johnson looks forward to.

“Next, I want to start working on my doctorate so I can begin working in forensic psychology,” Johnson said. “I love forensic cases and I want to help victims of domestic violence, trauma, addiction, and clinical mental health issues. I just want to be able to help people.”

Johnson has come a long way since first learning about her diagnoses in her mid-20s, a road that wouldn’t be possible without her education at Methodist University.

“I love Methodist University,” she added. “It’s taught me how to center my emotions and how to give myself credit through all of the difficult times. With the help of Methodist University, I know I can become the clinical psychologist I want to be without a shadow of doubt.”

Best Online CNA Programs Of 2024

For anyone who wants to enter the healthcare field, becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a practical option worth considering. It opens the door to a nursing career without requiring a college degree or a major commitment of time and money.

Certified nursing assistants provide patient care in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, usually under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered nurse (RN) . A CNA helps patients with basic functions including bathing and dressing, medication and movement. Consequently, it’s a job that will appeal to anyone drawn to a caregiver role, with all the rewards and the demands that caregiving entails. CNAs might also assist with basic administrative tasks such as patient documentation.

It’s possible to attain this entry-level position within just a few weeks—by taking a state-approved CNA certification course and then sitting for your state’s CNA competency exam. Moreover, online CNA courses are now available that allow trainees to enjoy the convenience and lower cost of remote learning while they prepare for a CNA career.

In the following article, we present a handful of standout online CNA programs from around the country, describe how they work and discuss what you can expect from each. Our list is not intended to be comprehensive; we offer it as a ranking based solely on the writer’s own research rather than as a more formal ranking supported by a methodology and objective data.

Key Takeaways

Should you pursue an online cna course, 6 online cna class options, frequently asked questions (faqs) about online cna classes.

  • You can earn a CNA certification in one to three months, provided you’re ready to work hard in that period.
  • The starting point for any CNA career is determining your home state’s specific certification requirements. You can find those through your state’s health department or nursing board.
  • CNA is a “foot in the door” to the healthcare field that seldom requires more than a high school diploma (or the equivalent) as a prerequisite.

Degree Finder

For every learner, deciding whether to earn a CNA certification online will depend in part on factors such as their individual learning style and schedule—not to mention the specific requirements for CNA certifications in their home state. However, some major benefits of online CNA courses include the following:

  • CNA certification is a point of entry into the healthcare field that can be obtained with a modest amount of time and money.
  • Certified nursing assistant is a solid foundation from which you can rise higher in the nursing profession and one that will allow you to decide how you might want to specialize later in your career.
  • CNAs enjoy a relative degree of job security. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts well over 200,000 openings for nursing assistants between 2022 and 2032—and given the documented aging of the U.S. population, it’s reasonable to assume that long-term care facilities and similar institutions will need CNAs to meet their staffing requirements.
  • An online CNA course offers the flexibility and convenience of studying at your own pace and on your own schedule, which can be critical if you’re juggling other commitments such as a job or family.

It’s important to clarify at the outset that online CNA programs themselves don’t result in certification. Instead, they provide the training that enables you to take and pass the state competency exam. Programs are typically offered through community colleges, along with hospitals and vocational schools.

Finally, remember that “online” in this context refers to hybrid programs in which your coursework (also known as the theory component of CNA training) is conducted online but the equally important clinical work is done in person at a licensed healthcare facility. To receive accreditation and state approval, a proper CNA program must include this hands-on training.

As in the other programs discussed on this page, the curriculum is delivered via a hybrid format that blends online learning with in-person training.

Trainees in the UNLV program earn their clinical hours at skilled nursing facilities, long-term acute care hospitals and other healthcare institutions in the greater Las Vegas–Henderson region. After clinical instruction, students are expected to be ready to sit for the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN) exam.

What is a CNA?

Certified nursing assistants are frequently the primary caregivers for patients who need basic assistance. They help patients with functions such as bathing and dressing, medication and movement. CNAs provide patient care in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, usually under the supervision of a nurse.

What is CNA certification?

Those who have completed their CNA training must pass an examination to become certified. Each state has its own requirements; however, you should expect a written or oral portion, plus a clinical skills exam that tests your skills as a CNA.

What's the fastest I can become a CNA?

Full-time CNA programs can be completed in 12 weeks or less, and special accelerated programs can get you working as a CNA in as little as six weeks. Becoming a CNA can be a relatively quick process compared to other healthcare professions.

Find a state-approved CNA training program, meaning it’s accredited and meets your state’s requirements. After you finish your training and pass the competency exam, apply for certification through your state’s health department or nursing board. Official certification will get you added to your state’s CNA registry, and you can then begin to apply for CNA positions in a variety of healthcare facilities.

How do I get a CNA license?

To earn a CNA license, begin by researching your state’s requirements for CNA certifications via the state health department or nursing board. Then, find a state-approved CNA training program. Divided between classroom instruction and clinical practice under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN), training programs are usually offered through community colleges, vocational schools or hospitals and last between four and 12 weeks.

After training, you need to pass the CNA competency exam, which includes both a written test covering theoretical knowledge and a practical skills test that requires you to perform specific nursing tasks in a simulated clinical environment.

Once you’ve passed the competency exam, apply to your state’s nursing board or health department for CNA certification. The certification process usually requires a background check as well as an application fee. Upon certification, you are now a licensed CNA and will be listed on your state’s CNA registry. Remember that you’ll have to renew your certification periodically, typically every two years.

How much does a CNA make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of mid-2023, the median annual wage for certified nursing assistants was $38,200—meaning half the CNAs in the U.S. earned more than $38,200 and half earned less. The highest 10% of CNA salaries exceeded $48,780 and the lowest 10% were less than $30,020.

CNA salaries can differ widely depending on the state you live in, whether you work in a primarily rural or urban area and the kind of healthcare facility you work in (whether it’s a private or public hospital, for instance, or an assisted living facility).
