7 Types of Homework for Students. There are seven types of homework. These are practice, preparation, extension, integration, research, application, and flipped homework. 1. Take a break now and then. You might think that tearing through all of your homework tasks from start to finish is the fastest way to do it. If you have a ton of homework, however, you'll probably get burnt out if you don't take a break every now and then. At least every two hours, take a 15 minute breather.

Here's how it works: first, set a timer for 25 minutes. This is going to be your work time. During this 25 minutes, all you can do is work on whatever homework assignment you have in front of you. No email, no text messaging, no phone calls—just homework. When that timer goes off, you get to take a 5 minute break.

Write out your daily homework in a list. You should have a section of your notes dedicated specifically to homework, to make it easy-to-find and convenient. Some students find it effective to use a day planner or a calendar to stay organized, while others prefer simple notebook paper or composition books.

Homework tasks such as collecting things from the yard or interviewing grandparents gets kids away from screens and into more active activities. 6. Homework gives students productive afternoon activities. Too often, children get home from school and switch off their brains by watching cartoons or playing video games.

The Toronto District School Board offers a simple guideline to help determine how much homework is appropriate at each grade level. Following the guideline of 10 minutes per grade level, each grade should have this amount of homework: 30 minutes in Grade 3. 40 minutes in Grade 4. 50 minutes in Grade 5.
