Hello mga ka-LEAn!
Hello fellow LEAns!
Every introduction needs a greeting as it opens a window towards meeting new people or reaffirming relations with the people you know and love.
As you noticed earlier, there is no word for "Hello" in Tagalog. However, we have our own words or phrases for other greetings.
How are you = Kamústa ka?
For the greeting above, that was the casual form.
For the polite one, you have to use "po kayo" after "Kamusta" instead of "ka". Which means that you will be saying:
Kamústa po kayó?
ᜃᜋᜓᜐ᜔ᜆ ᜉᜓ ᜃᜌᜓ?
Note: Some of you might have noticed that I used "Kamusta" instead of "Kumusta". That's because I used the colloquial/spoken form. "Kumusta" is the grammatically correct version.
To greet based on the different times of the day, here are the phrases:
Good Day = Magandáng Araw/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜀᜇᜏ᜔
Good Morning = Magandáng Umága/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜂᜋᜄ
Good Noon = Magandáng Tangháli/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜆᜅ᜔ᜑᜎᜒ
Good Afternoon = Magandáng Hápon/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜑᜉᜓᜈ᜔
Good Evening = Magandáng Gabí/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜄᜊᜒ
Again, those are the casual forms. In their polite forms, just add "po" at the end of the phrases.
If you want to ask people's names, ask them
Anóng pangálan mo? (singular)
ᜀᜈᜓᜅ᜔ ᜉᜅᜎᜈ᜔ ᜋᜓ?
Anóng pangálan nyo? (plural, polite singular)
ᜀᜈᜓᜅ᜔ ᜉᜅᜎᜈ᜔ ᜈᜒᜌᜓ?
To introduce yourself, you'll say:
I am = Akó si/ᜀᜃᜓ ᜐᜒ (insert name)
We are the = Kamí ang/ᜃᜋᜒ ᜀᜅ᜔ (insert group/ group's description)
Add "po" after the pronouns "ako" & "kami" to use the polite forms.
Asking for one's residence:
Where do you live? = Saán ka (s)/kayó (p) nakatirá? / ᜐᜀᜈ᜔ ᜃ/ᜃᜌᜓ ᜈᜃᜆᜒᜇ?
Where are you from? =Tagasaán ka (s)/kayó (p)? ᜆᜄᜐᜀᜈ᜔ ᜃ/ᜃᜌᜓ
Answering the question,
I live in *insert residence* = Nakatirá akó (s)/kamí (p) sa *insert residence
ᜈᜃᜆᜒᜇ ᜀᜃᜓ/ᜃᜋᜒ ᜐ
I am/We are from *insert place* = Taga-*insert place* akó (s)/kamí (p)
ᜆᜄ-*insert place* ᜀᜃᜓ/ᜃᜋᜒ
Asking for one's age:
Ilang taon ka na? (singular)
ᜁᜎᜅ᜔ ᜆᜂᜈ᜔ ᜃ ᜈ?
Ilang taon na kayo? (plural)
ᜁᜎᜅ᜔ ᜆᜂᜈ᜔ ᜈ ᜃᜌᜓ?
*Insert age* na akó (s)/kamí (p)
*insert age* ᜈ ᜀᜃᜓ/ᜃᜋᜒ
After they introduce themselves, you'll say:
Nice to meet you (singular) = Ikinagágalak kitáng makilála/ᜁᜃᜒᜈᜄᜄᜎᜃ᜔ ᜃᜒᜆᜅ᜔ ᜋᜃᜒᜎᜎ
Nice to meet you (plural) = Ikinagágalak ko kayóng makilála/ᜁᜃᜒᜈᜄᜄᜎᜃ᜔ ᜃᜓ ᜃᜌᜓᜅ᜔ ᜋᜃᜒᜎᜎ
If you want to greet based on the occasions of the year, here are some of the greetings:
Happy New Year = Masagánang Bágong Taón/ᜋᜐᜄᜈᜅ᜔ ᜊᜄᜓᜅ᜔ ᜆᜂᜈ᜔
Happy Birthday = Maligáyang Kaárawan/ᜋᜎᜒᜄᜌᜅ᜔ ᜃᜀᜇᜏᜈ᜔
Merry Christmas = Maligáyang Paskó/ᜋᜎᜒᜄᜌᜅ᜔ ᜉᜐ᜔ᜃᜓ
Replying to the greetings
To reply for "Kamústa ka?", you'll say:
Mabúti/ᜋᜊᜓᜆᜒ or Maáyos lang(po)/ᜋᜀᜌᜓᜐ᜔ ᜎᜅ᜔ (ᜉᜓ)
To respond to the rest of the greetings, you'll say the same but add it with "din/rin" (casual) or "din po/rin po" (polite)(except for birthdays of course unless you have the same birthday as the person who greeted you).
Magandáng hápon din (po)/ᜋᜄᜈ᜔ᜇᜅ᜔ ᜑᜉᜓᜈ᜔ ᜇᜒᜈ᜔ (ᜉᜓ)
din/rin / ᜇᜒᜈ᜔ = also, too
To say "Goodbye", it would be:
Paálam/ᜉᜀᜎᜋ᜔
Or if you want to be a little extra, you can say:
Ingat ka/ᜁᜅᜆ᜔ ᜃ
Ingat (po) kayó/ᜁᜅᜆ᜔ (ᜉᜓ) ᜃᜌᜓ
Which means "take care"
These are the words and phrases that are used for greetings. With that being said, it's time for me to say
Paalam! Kita-kita na lang tayo ulit.
Goodbye! Let's meet each other again.
Dapat gumagamit talaga tayo ng tilde.
cool post but if anyone ever said 'good noon' to me i would leave them
