Here's How Omanis Celebrate Their National Day

National Day Celebrations © Prasad Pillai

Traditional folklore performance, Omani heritage music, festivals, songs and costumes. On 18th November Omanis come together to celebrate their National Day – something they prepare for all year long.

What is oman’s national day.

The 18th of November is the birthday of Qaboos bin Said al Said, the Sultan of Oman. In recognition of the great achievements of Oman and its citizens since the Sultan took office in 1970, Omanis are given time off work in order to celebrate.

Qaboos bin Said al Said

How do Omanis celebrate?

Usually, the streets of Oman are decorated with white, red and green lights – the colours of the Omani flag. Every street light will hold a flag of Oman, while bridges get usually covered with big flags, a photo of the Sultan Qaboos or a poster of one of his famous quotes. Official buildings also get decorated with white, red and green lights days before the 18th, and will remain there until the end of November.

Building decorations, National Day celebrations

Shops, malls, houses and cars are specially decorated with photos of the Sultan and accessories with the colours of the Omani flag. Shop owners often sell goods that are related to the National Day, and decorate their owns stores with them too. Schools in every governorate collaborate to prepare a special dance and a festive event that will take place in a big venue in their region.

The largest celebration, however, is the one that the Sultan himself attends. The ceremony traditionally begins with a military parade, followed by a performance of several pieces of heritage music.

What is planned for the 2017 National Day?

This year marks the 77th birthday of Qaboos bin Said al Said, and the country will celebrate its 47th National Day. The military ceremony will take place at the parade ground of the Police Task Force headquarters in the Wilayat of Seeb in Muscat.

Firework displays will take place in some of Muscat’s provinces: Seeb, Al Amerat and Salalah Province. Traditional folklore performances and festivals will be held in different cities until the end of the month.

Oman’s National Day is considered a public holiday. Government offices and schools are closed on this day and the day after because of the celebration of the Sultan’s birthday. Most businesses are usually closed on November 18 and 19.

In 1507, the Portuguese arrived in Oman after Vasco Da Gama’s voyage around the Cape of Good Hope and India. They used Muscat as a port to protect their trade routes to India. However, the Al-Ya’ribi clan in Oman signed a treaty with the British East India Company allowing the British rights to their ports, in response to the Portuguese arrival. The effort succeeded and Portuguese control over Muscat weakened. On November 18, 1650, Imam Sultan Bin Saif spearheaded a rebellion which eventually expelled the Portuguese from Oman. This move makes Oman the oldest independent Arab state in modern history.

National Day: Time for reflection and celebration

essay on national day oman

Muscat – Based on the Royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the official holiday for the 52nd National Day has been announced on November 30 and December 1. What does the National Day mean to you? And what do you plan to do in the National Day holiday? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said

Ahmed al Siyabi, Businessman National Day is the day to be proud of our traditions, culture and the country. A strong sense of patriotism lingers in our hearts and minds for weeks. This year, the holiday was announced a little early and this has helped me plan in advance. I plan to spend some quality time with my family. I also plan to take my staff for an evening outing somewhere in Muscat followed by a good Omani dinner.

Omar al Musallami, Marketing manager National Day is the day when we remember our beloved the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said more compared to other times of the year. I have always decorated my cars with images of Oman. This time, I printed a big ‘52’ on the door. During the holiday, I plan to visit my friends in Dubai. My brother is also there and we long to spend some good time together.

Bader al Harthy, Government employee Every National Day, I dress up my children in beautiful clothes and take pictures. I also visit my village and meet all my cousins and relatives. It is a lovely time to feel the togetherness with good food, in a nice environment, weather and people around. We play patriotic music most of the day and make sure to cook homemade food. National Day is very close to my heart and I always take immense pride in celebrating it.

Vinod Raghavan, Businessman I have been in Oman for the last ten years and every National Day is special to me. The day is special to Omanis as well as expatriates. I plan to visit some interior areas of the country this National Day holiday with my sponsor, who is also a friend. We will also go to his village. I write blogs and this holiday will be the right time for me to write about the real Oman.

Mohammad Lawati, Sales executive National Day is the time of the year to look back on our glorious past and the many achievements that the country has accomplished during the past five decades. Our office celebrated with cake, music and food. Everyone joined the celebration, including expatriates who have been a very integral part of our lives. During the holiday on November 30 and December 1, I would love to chill watch-ing the matches of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. I wanted to go to Qatar, too, but sadly I cannot because now no tickets are available.

U.S. Moves a Guided-Missile Submarine to the Middle East Amid Fears of Escalation

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, the Pentagon said. In an unusual disclosure, it said Mr. Austin had ordered a submarine to the Middle East.

reporting from Washington

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has ordered the guided-missile submarine Georgia to the Middle East, underscoring the threat of the regional crisis involving Israel and Iran that has threatened to spark a wider war, the Pentagon said.

On Sunday, Mr. Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, the third call the two are known to have held in a week, as fears rose of an escalation in the conflict. In the call, Mr. Austin “reiterated the United States’ commitment to take every possible step to defend Israel,” according to a summary provided by the Pentagon press secretary, Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder.

General Ryder’s announcement said that Mr. Austin had moved the U.S.S. Georgia submarine to the Middle East was rare, as the Pentagon seldom talks about the movements of its submarine fleet. The Georgia can fire cruise missiles and carry teams of Navy SEAL commandos.

General Ryder noted that Mr. Austin had already ordered additional combat aircraft and missile-shooting warships to the region. The orders came in response to threats from Iran and its proxies in Gaza, Lebanon and Yemen to attack Israel to avenge the assassination of a top Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh , in Tehran on July 31.

Mr. Austin has also directed the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35 fighter jets, to accelerate its arrival in the region, joining the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying warships already in the Gulf of Oman.

The Lincoln, which was in the Sulu Sea near the Philippines on Monday, was originally expected to relieve the Roosevelt at the end of this month. But the warship is now anticipated to arrive in the region in the next two or three days, and could overlap with the Roosevelt for at least a couple of weeks, doubling the carrier firepower in the region.

3.2. Pearson Correlation Coefficient Analysis (PCA) between Drought Indices (DIs)

3.3. the drought hazard index (dhi) assessment, 4. discussion.

  • The results of the TCI index values over the study period exhibit variations over time, with notable minimum observed values in specific years (2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021); this indicates periods of more severe temperature conditions in the study area during those years [ 14 ]. The TCI index values trend shows an increase in temperature in the years 2014 to 2023 compared to the years 2001 to 2013; this trend suggests a worsening of temperature conditions over the years, which can have implications for the study region’s environment and ecosystems [ 48 ]. The TCI mean values throughout different years ranged from 18.9 to 80.9, indicating the varying severity of drought conditions over time. Therefore, the analysis provides valuable insights into the impact of temperature conditions on drought dynamics in the Najd region, emphasizing the importance of considering multiple factors in assessing drought conditions through indices such as TCI and VCI indices [ 49 ]. Song et al. (2018) [ 50 ] used MODIS-based indices to study drought conditions in China. Their findings highlighted how extreme temperature conditions, reflected by low TCI values, were crucial for understanding drought dynamics and impacts on agriculture. This supports the observation that minimum TCI values signify critical temperature stress periods.
  • The spatial distribution maps of the VCI index revealed that several years, including 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, were characterized by mild drought conditions, and the mean VCI values ranged from 48.2 to 67 throughout the study period. This indicates fluctuations in vegetation health and moisture availability in the region over the years. The results suggest a varying pattern of drought severity, with certain years experiencing milder drought conditions while others show wetter conditions. These results provide valuable insights into the dynamics of vegetation response to environmental conditions in the Najd region over the studied time period; the results are similar to the VCI analysis on spatiotemporal variations of spring drought in China by Liang et al. (2021) [ 51 ]. Omondi, (2010) [ 52 ] employed statistical models to analyze VCI trends in the Horn of Africa, finding that VCI values significantly correlated with seasonal rainfall patterns. Their analysis revealed a mean VCI decrease during drought years, with VCI values dropping by up to 20 compared to non-drought years; the study highlighted those periods with a VCI below 50 corresponded with severe drought conditions and reduced vegetation health.
  • According to VHI index spatial distribution maps, all studied years (with the exception of 2005 and 2007) were classified as moderate drought years, and the mean VHI values ranged from 36.6 to 70.5 throughout the study period. Based on Jalayer et al. (2023) [ 53 ], the VHI index results underscore the persistent nature of drought conditions in the Najd region, with a noticeable escalation in severe drought events in the latter years of the study period. The spatial and temporal analysis of VHI provides valuable insights into the evolving drought patterns in the region, emphasizing the need for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies to address the heightened risk of drought in the study area [ 54 ].
  • The high positive correlation between VHI and VCI (0.829, p < 0.01) underscores a robust linear relationship, implying that VCI is a significant predictor of VHI. The correlation coefficient between the VHI index and TCI index is 0.679, indicating a positive correlation. This suggests that as the VHI index increases, the TCI index tends to increase. Meanwhile, the correlation coefficient between the VCI index and TCI index is 0.152, indicating a positive and very weak correlation; this result is compatible with Al-Kindi et al.’s (2022) study [ 55 ], which aimed at drought monitoring using various drought indices (DIs) in the northern part of the United Arab Emirates.
  • The DHI index’s spatial analysis reveals significant regional disparities in drought severity, highlighting the most severe conditions in the northern regions of the study area, and the spatial distribution maps indicate that the northern regions experienced the highest levels of drought risk, with severity gradually decreasing towards the south and east. Specifically, the data show that approximately 44% of the total area fell under moderate drought risk, while a substantial 56% faced very severe drought risk. The differential in drought severity underscores the importance of understanding regional variations in drought severity and the need for proactive measures to build resilience and mitigate the impacts of drought on vulnerable communities and ecosystems [ 56 ].

5. Conclusions and Recommendations

  • The TCI index exhibited temporal variations over the study period, with notable minimum values observed in specific years (2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021). Furthermore, there was a discernible trend of increasing temperatures from 2014 to 2023 compared to earlier years, indicating potential climate change impacts.
  • Several years, including 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, were characterized by mild drought conditions based on the VCI index, with mean values ranging from 48.2 to 67 throughout the study period. This suggests periodic but relatively moderate levels of vegetation stress in the region.
  • Except for 2005 and 2007, all studied years were classified as moderate drought years based on the VHI index, indicating persistent drought conditions in the region. A noticeable escalation in severe drought events was observed towards the latter years of the study period, emphasizing the evolving nature of drought patterns and the need for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.
  • A strong positive correlation was found between VHI and VCI indices, indicating a robust linear relationship and highlighting VCI as a significant predictor of VHI. Positive correlations were also observed between VHI and TCI indices, albeit with varying strengths, while the correlation between VCI and TCI indices was positive but very weak.
  • The northern regions of the study area faced the most severe drought hazards, gradually diminishing towards the south and east. Approximately 44% of the total area was classified as under moderate drought risk, while the remaining 56% faced very severe drought risk, underscoring the widespread and significant impacts of drought in the study area.
  • Ground Validation and Local Accuracy: (a) Increase the number and coverage of ground-based monitoring stations, especially in remote and arid regions. Collaborative networks between local governments, research institutions, and international organizations can help achieve these goals. (b) Leverage local knowledge and observations from communities to validate satellite data and improve local accuracy.
  • Expertise and Interpretation: (a) Provide training for local experts and stakeholders in remote sensing and climate science to improve the interpretation of satellite data. (b) Develop more intuitive tools and platforms that can assist non-experts in interpreting satellite-derived indices.
  • Historical Data Limitations: (a) Combine satellite data with other historical datasets, such as meteorological records or historical maps, to extend the temporal analysis. (b) Use climate models to simulate past conditions and fill gaps in the historical record.
  • Resolution and Fine-Scale Variations: (a) Where possible, use higher-resolution satellite data or combine multiple data sources to capture finer-scale variations. (b) Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to downscale coarse-resolution data to better reflect local conditions.
  • Access to Data and Resources: (a) Foster partnerships between researchers, governments, and organizations to share resources and expertise. (b) Support and utilize open access platforms and initiatives like Google Earth Engine (GEE) to facilitate data access and processing.
  • Socio-Economic Impact Assessment: (a) Combine satellite data with socio-economic data through integrated assessment models to capture the broader impacts of drought. (b) Engage with local communities to understand and incorporate their experiences and impacts into drought assessments.

PARIS (AP) — The Paris Olympics are coming to a close on Sunday.

U.S. gymnastics star Simone Biles made a triumphant return, taking her Olympic gold tally to seven. French swimmer Léon Marchand won five medals — four of them gold — fulfilling comparisons to Michael Phelps. Armand “Mondo” Duplantis won another gold medal, but the real show for the 80,000 at the Stade de France — which will be the site of Sunday’s closing ceremony — was when he broke the world record for the ninth time.

Sha’Carri Richardson rallied in the anchor leg to lead the U.S. to a win in the 4x100 meter relay and claim her first Olympic gold medal.

Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria won a gold medal after being in the spotlight because of misconceptions about her gender , and breaking made its Olympic debut with Japan’s b-girl Ami taking the gold.

Organizers of the Paris Games have, for the most part, successfully showcased the beauty of the French capital. Beach volleyball has taken place next to the Eiffel Tower . Holding events in the polluted Seine River , however, has proven more difficult.

Who is winning the 2024 Olympics?

The United States leads the medal standings overall, with China next in line. Australia, Japan, Britain and France are vying for the third spot. Here is Saturday’s Olympic schedule of events , as well as the overall list of medal winners .

What’s the last event of the 2024 Olympics?

The women’s basketball gold medal game between the United States and France is the last event before the closing ceremony. It’s scheduled to tip off at 3:30 p.m. CEST (9:30 a.m. EDT) at Bercy Arena.

When is the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony?

The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. CEST (3 p.m. EDT) on Sunday at Stade de France just north of Paris. It’s expected to last until 11:15 p.m. CEST (5:15 p.m. EDT).

What will happen during the closing ceremony?

It will feature traditional highlights, including the athletes’ parade and the handover of the Olympic flag to the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games . H.E.R., the five-time Grammy winner , is expected to sing the U.S. national anthem live at the Stade de France as part of the handover. There will be a medal presentation ceremony — for the women’s marathon from earlier in the day.

2024 Paris Olympics:

It’s a more traditional setting after the Seine River was used for the audacious opening ceremony , but don’t expect it to be dull. It features the same artistic director — Thomas Jolly. Organizers said in a recent statement that it will include “over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers and circus artists.” There will be musical performances and “the participation of world-renowned singers will complete the picture. ... Part of the show will take place in the air, while the giant sets, costumes and spectacular lighting effects will take spectators on a journey through time, both past and future.”

Jolly added: “It’s a very visual, very choreographic, very acrobatic show with an operatic dimension to give a great visual fresco and say goodbye to athletes from all over the world.”

How can I watch the closing ceremony?

It will air on NBC and Peacock.
