Imagine getting through your busy day without arms or legs. Picture your life without the ability to walk, care for your basic needs, or even embrace those you love.

Meet Nicholas Vujicic (pronounced voo-yi-chich). Without any medical explanation or warning, Nick was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia, without arms and legs. Three sonograms failed to reveal complications. And yet, the Vujicic family was destined to cope with both the challenge and blessing of raising a son who refused to allow his physical condition to limit his lifestyle.

The early days were difficult. Throughout his childhood, Nick not only dealt with the typical challenges of school and adolescence, but he also struggled with depression and loneliness. Nick constantly wondered why he was different than all the other kids. He questioned the purpose of life, or if he even had a purpose.

According to Nick, the victory over his struggles, as well as his strength and passion for life today, can be credited to his faith in God. His family, friends and the many people he has encountered along the journey have inspired him to carry on.

Since his first speaking engagement at age 19, Nick has traveled around the world. He has shared his story with millions, sometimes in stadiums filled to capacity, speaking to a range of diverse groups such as students, teachers, young people, business professionals and church congregations of all sizes.

Today this dynamic evangelist has accomplished more than most people achieve in a lifetime. He’s an author, musician, actor, and his hobbies include fishing, painting and swimming.

In 2005, Nick made the long journey from Australia to southern California where he founded NickV Ministries (formerly Life Without Limbs). He is currently serving as President and CEO.

Nick Vujicic is a renowned Australian-American Christian evangelist and motivational speaker born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder experienced by the absence of arms and legs.

Although he was born a healthy baby, Nick had no arms and legs. He basically had two small feet, one of which had two toes. Due to his physical disability, Nick delayed attending school as the Victoria state law barred him despite being mentally okay.

However, after the law was changed, he was among the first physically disabled students to join a mainstream school. This was not the end of his troubles. His lack of limbs made him a target for school bullies a situation that had him deeply depressed.

At the age of eight, he thought of suicide and later tried to drown himself in his bathtub at the age of 10. For the love of his parents, Nick gave it a second thought and got himself from the dark scenario.

He always prayed hard that God would give him arms and legs. He even told God that if this prayer went unanswered, then he would not praise him indefinitely.

He gradually had a way to live fully without limbs, adapting many of the daily tasks limbed people accomplish. In this spirit, he learned to write with two toes on his left foot, having a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He even knows how to use a computer and can type up to 45 words within a minute using the “heel and toe” method.

Other essential things that he learned include; throwing a tennis ball, playing drums, getting a glass of water, combing his hair, brushing his teeth, shaving, and answering the phone.

During his high school life, he was even voted captain of MacGregor State in Queensland where he worked with the student council on fundraising events for disability and charity campaigns.

At the age of 17, he started giving talks to his prayer group, a trait that led him to become a seasoned motivational speaker. In addition, he founded Life Without Limbs, a non-profit organization in 2005. later in 2007, Nick founded Attitude is Attitude, a secular motivational speaking company.

Elsewhere, he featured in the short film, The Butterfly Circus. This later had him recognized at the 2010 Method Fest Independent Film Festival as the Best Actor in a short film for his starring role as Will.

This week , LA Stories with Giselle Fernandez profiles Nick Vujicic.

Born without any limbs for no known medical reason, he grew up frustrated and suicidal until a school janitor told him he should be a speaker.
