The best Tamil films of 2023: From ‘Koozhangal’ and ‘Chithha’ to ‘Good Night’ and ‘Viduthalai: Part 1’

As 2023 comes to an end, here’s our list of the ten best tamil films of the year — in order of release dates — in what was a fantastic year for kollywood in theatres and on streaming.

December 26, 2023 01:41 pm | Updated 01:52 pm IST

Bhuvanesh Chandar

Stills from ‘Good Night’, ‘Koozhangal’, ‘ Chithha’, ‘Viduthalai: Part 1’, ‘Thalaikoothal’, and ‘Jigarthanda: Double X’ (clockwise from top left)

Thalaikoothal:

“When is one considered alive and who are we to decide that?” Examining this question would take more than a lifetime, and those oblivious spaces in our existence as thinking beings are where artists love to cook their magic potions; that’s what Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan pulled off with his wonderful film, Thalaikoothal . The spectacular surreal imagery of viewing the life of a comatose patient through their memories and subconsciousness told the merit of the filmmaker in Jayaprakash. If social media reactions were to be taken as a parameter, Thalaikoothal would end up an underrated gem from Tamil cinema this year. Starring a terrific Samuthirakani as a son who stands up against the world to save his father from senicide, this is an unmissable film which is currently streaming on Netflix.

What a terrific year it has been for debutant filmmakers! We had Ayothi , Good Night , Por Thozhil , Parking , Bommai Nayagi and of course, Ganesh K Babu’s emotional romance drama Dada . Starring Kavin and Aparna Das — who were both terrific in their roles — the film showed the rupturing of a relationship due to an unplanned pregnancy with a lot of heart. While you wish the second half of the film turned the lens more towards the single father and the child, the superbly-staged scenes surely made up for any missteps.

Watch | Actor Kavin on ‘DaDa’ and the road to success

While casually re-watching Sasikumar’s fantastic film Ayothi , the thought I couldn’t shake away is what it takes for a director to convince his producer, actors and team to believe in what he saw in this story. Especially at a time when films were keen on getting bigger and prioritised telling even political ideas in a larger-than-life fashion, Ayothi was a simple, straightforward film that reminded us of what cinema can do. Apart from telling a tearjerker of a story, R Manthira Moorthy’s film questioned patriarchy within a family system, pointed at the cracks in the sanctimonious norms and philosophical structures people are conditioned to lean on, and told that all religions should first ask you to pray to this god — the fellow human being. Forgive the introduction fight meant to appease Sasikumar fans, and Ayothi gives you more than you ask from it.

Viduthalai - Part 1:

It seems as if all the behind-the-scenes events and production trivia have gotten more attention than necessary, but what Vetri Maaran pulled off with an ambitious project of this scale is surely an achievement. In telling a story about the injustice and inhuman torture that innocent folk were subjected to by power structures, what stood out was Vetri’s choice to have a good-hearted cop in the centre of it all to expose the decay from within. Viduthalai: Part 1 takes this place on our list for its grounded storytelling of a powerful tale, the vision in mounting it on an actor known for comedy (Soori), the technical prowess on display (we are still not over that single-take shot) and Vetri’s relentless pursuit to tell stories against oppression. It also reminds us that Vetri is also terrific at writing (and filming) romance as well.

Good Night:

Next time you eat a bun-butter-jam, think of all the ways you could make it seem romantic and delectable. In comes Vinayak Chandrasekaran’s Good Night to say that when you’re hungry and craving a bite, just take a good friend to the bakery and the snack will look god-sent. That matter-of-fact display of mundane everyday life and tender frames filled with real, imperfect people are what most of us will remember this film with. In a year filled with stories that lose themselves in using the ‘concept’ as the anchor ( Adiyae , Theera Kadhal to name a few), Good Night uses something as common as sleep apnea to talk about the many crevices that can come up between a husband and a wife.

Por Thozhil:

If you’ve watched the many serial killer investigative thrillers of Hollywood, you might wonder what the allure of this film is. Even serial killer films in Tamil cinema have dabbled with several ideas that are explored in this film. But with Por Thozhil , Vignesh Raja managed to put a deft little touch to each of those tropes and brought together capable actors and technicians who give their all to the craft. The result was a mainstream thriller that kept it simple and real, not rushing to become something bigger and commercial, and telling an honest story that didn’t make a fool of the audience. The bonus was how it left us with a subtle yet important nugget on parenting.

Madonne Ashwin’s delightful superhero film was the most creative of entertainers this year. Sivakarthikeyan, for long, has been doing a balancing act of sorts between doing masala films like Don, and the occasional experiments like Doctor . With Maaveeran , the star turns himself into a director’s tool, and in Madonne, he finds a filmmaker who can tell a refreshing superhero story while also ensuring the screenplay organically builds towards crowd-pleasing moments. Of the many films that attempted to tell a socially relevant story to discuss what heroism at its core is all about, Maaveeran stood apart and stood tall.

“Fish buns. Cerelac. Thaenmittai . Horse carriages. Lollipops. Magic Pencils. Coloured chicklings. Ponds powder. Clothesline clips. Carousel rides.” All those little fascinations that populate a child’s world should remind you of the wide-eyed joys from your childhood. And yet, if arranged in an order and uttered as such, it sends a chill down your spine; this speaks volumes about the impact SU Arunkumar’s Chithha created. Settai and Chithha charmed their way into our list the minute we stepped out of the screens and very few films from recent years have managed to make us all unanimously root for its success. Arunkumar and music composer Santhosh Narayanan deserve all the plaudits coming their way, and the much-discussed ‘good-touch-bad-touch’ scene highlighted the performer in Siddharth like never before. More importantly, Chithha has set a new benchmark when it comes to the sensitive portrayals in stories concerning a child.

Koozhangal:

PS Vinothraj’s stellar debut was the talk of the tinsel town due to its historical festival run in 2021, and after two long years, the film came out for public viewing on SonyLIV in October. For little more than an hour, we follow a young boy’s vexing routine with his alcoholic father on a journey that brings along unexpected guests and a piece of mirror that transcends us to the dreams of a child. Rooted deep into its milieu and unrestrained in its telling, this art-house film with mainstream textual sensibilities catapulted Vinothraj as an Indian filmmaker to look out for. Most would remember it for viscerally capturing the feeling of walking barefoot in scorching heat with a chest simmering with rage, or helplessness, depending on perspective.

Jigarthanda Double X:

It was just the right time for the inevitable comeback from Karthik Subbaraj, and did he do that in style. Jigarthanda Double X will always be regarded as one of the most heartfelt tributes to the art form and nature. Karthik’s ‘political masala western’ won as both a spiritual sequel to Jigarthanda and as a standalone spectacle that seamlessly bridges two distinct worlds — of a filmmaker and a gangster, of bloodied streets and a lively forest, of a Godfather and a messiah — and is this year’s most wholesome entertainer. If not for all of that, just the performances of SJ Suryah and Raghava Lawrence, along with Santhosh’s background scores, were enough to tug at our heartstrings.

2023 Wrap: The 10 Best Tamil Movies of The Year

Best Tamil Movies of 2023

Not just big, bigger and biggest, 2023 held space for small films too in the Tamil film industry. While the flavour of the season is still the action genre, there were quite a few films that explored different themes and won the hearts of the audience. Here is our top 10 list from Kollywood.

After Gautham Ramachandran’s Gargi (2022) last year, comes Chithha , another sensitively made film on child sexual abuse. Directed by SU Arun Kumar, the film is set in Palani and revolves around a man whose niece goes missing. Siddharth plays Eeswaran with an urgency that bleeds into the viewer, and child actor Sahasra Shree is brilliant in her role as Sundari (also called Settai). But what sets the film apart is its understanding that toxic masculinity is at the root of sexual violence. While Eeswaran is convinced that he must seek revenge for what has happened to his niece, his girlfriend Sakthi (Nimisha Sajayan) calls him out for making it all about himself. This is a film that gets what #YesAllMen means, and empowers a female character to spell it out – and Nimisha is terrific in the scene. A relief from the innumerable hero-centric rape-revenge dramas we have watched over the years.

Viduthalai – Part 1

The opening sequence in this Vetrimaaran film – a long single take of a derailed train – immediately plunges the viewer into its central conflict. A people’s army on one side that seemingly uses terrorist methods of protest and the police on the other side that’s tasked with stopping them. It’s an excellent choice to make a lowrung policeman the protagonist of this gripping story. Kumaresan (Soori) has the uniform, but not all the power that comes with it, and it’s through his eyes that we discover Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi), the leader of the people’s army. Is he a brute or a saviour? A legend or a criminal? Soori is a surprise in the role, navigating a whole range of emotions as Kumaresan is torn between duty, love and ethics. The graphic visuals of custodial torture in the film are debatable, especially since the film is based on real life events and the victims belong to marginalised communities. Still, there’s no doubt that Viduthalai - Part 1 makes for a searing watch.

Jigarthanda Double X

Karthik Subbaraj’s tribute to cinema is a spiritual sequel to Jigarthanda (2014), his critically acclaimed action comedy that revolves around a gangster who aspires to be a movie star. Here, too, there is one such gangster who wants to become the Tamil film industry’s first dark-skinned superstar. Actually, he aspires to become a “Pandya” star (you have to laugh at the jibe at pan Indian movies here). But, there’s more to the story. Subbaraj marries the sensibilities of a Western with local politics and cinema history, pulling off a layered satire that becomes an act of resistance towards the end. Raghava Lawrence plays Allius Caesar, an adivasi man who is also a brutal gangster. He is reformed because of cinema, not through the process of watching but becoming a part of the art. SJ Suryah delivers yet another superb performance as a cop who discovers that the camera is a more effective weapon than the gun. Subbaraj’s film is a reminder about the power of art and the immortality of the artist.

Por Thozhil

Vignesh Raja’s serial killer thriller follows two cops – a stony senior and a fresh-faced junior – as they go on a twisty, exhilarating hunt. The film is as much about the dynamics between SP Loganathan (Sarathkumar) and Prakash (Ashok Selvan) as it is about uncovering the killer. Both the actors deliver compelling performances, but Sarath Babu is the real surprise. You can cut the tension with a chopping knife in the scene when a cop interrogates him at a railway crossing. The title of the film translates to ‘The Art of War’, and the writing leads the viewer into the mind of the killer with enough twists and turns that keep us hooked till the end. Nikhila Vimal’s small role as a technical assistant is also a pleasant change from the conventional “love interest” roles that women actors get stuck with in such films.

In this polarised era where opinions on politics have divided families and estranged friends, Manthira Moorthy’s moving drama – which sometimes tips into melodrama – brings back humanity to the discourse. A family from Uttar Pradesh is travelling to Tamil Nadu for a pilgrimage when their car meets with an accident. Sasikumar plays the good samaritan who comes to their aid as they struggle with the unfamiliar land, its people and their language. With a simple and straightforward plot, the film navigates through a labyrinth of complex identities – that of gender, religion, language and community. While many Tamil films have mocked Hindi speakers and migrants as a way of resisting Hindi imposition by the political class, Ayothi moves past such easy caricaturing. Preethi Asrani as Shivani, a young woman from a conservative family, is particularly impressive in the scene where she stands up to her bigoted father.

Ponniyin Selvan 2

The second part of Mani Ratnam’s historical fiction film divided the Ponniyin Selvan fandom over its writing and directorial choices, but when the dust settled, most agreed that this was probably as close to a satisfying film adaptation as one could get of the beloved Kalki novel. While the novel is about the succession battle in the Chola kingdom, the film focuses on the tragic romance between Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) that drives the story. Vikram is fantastic as the hot-headed, restless Karikalan and Aishwarya matches his performance with her ice queen demeanour that thaws in rare moments of vulnerability. Be it the beautiful ‘Aga Naga’ song or the scene when the three siblings (Vikram, Jayam Ravi and Trisha) cuddle together even as enemies swarm around them, the adaptation succeeds in retaining the magic of the novel even as it rewrites it.

In this unusual superhero film, Madonne Ashwin gives us a comic book artist who hears a voice in his head – that of a character he created. Unlike Sathya (Sivakarthikeyan) who avoids confrontations, Maaveeran (Vijay Sethupathi’s voice) is a battle-ready warrior. When Sathya’s family is relocated from a slum to a fancy apartment building and things go downhill, Maaveeran awakens within Sathya. Mixing comedy with social messaging, Ashwin’s writing is almost always engaging even if the residents of Makkal Maaligai seem strangely lacking in agency. The action scenes are especially a hoot as Sathya unsuccessfully fights Maaveeran in his head. Yogi Babu is hilarious as a Tamil construction worker who pretends to be a Hindi-speaking migrant. A satisfying addition to the desi superhero genre after Basil Joseph’s Minnal Murali (2021).

After the fiasco that was Beast (2022), Rajinikanth fans were nervous about Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer , but they needn’t have worried. The director is in fine form in this crime comedy where the Superstar, a retired cop and doting grandfather, goes in search of his missing son. As ‘Tiger’ Muthuvel Pandian, Rajinikanth is remarkably restrained and yet maxes the swag when he’s allowed to unleash it to Anirudh’s amazing background score. Two other superstars – Mohanlal and Shivrajkumar – make excellent cameos in the film, and the climax is paisa vasool several times over. The detours in the second half may seem unnecessary but grow on you with repeat watches. Vinayakan is brilliant as the deranged Varman, with his “Manasalayo?” quickly becoming a catchphrase among the audience. The women characters, though, are a total disappointment, and the biggest crime on screen is probably how little Ramya Krishnan has to do in the film.

Not Mari Selvaraj’s best, but an important film nevertheless in how it reclaims the narrative set by an iconic and influential film like Thevar Magan (1992). Centred on a Dalit politician in a Dravidian party and his rebellious son (Udayanidhi Stalin), the film marks the return of popular comedian Vadivelu to the big screen in a layered role. In this reimagination of Thevar Magan , Selvaraj questions the legacy of the classic by turning its hero into his antagonist – the brutal, caste-obsessed Rathinavel (a spectacular Fahadh Faasil). The rousing interval block that references a real life incident is the film’s highlight, and Selvaraj exposes how caste is written into anything and everything, including the simple act of sitting on a chair. The second half loses steam with a listless election taking centerstage, but the film comes alive once again in its final stretch.

In a sea of films where the hero solves all problems with a gun and an endless supply of bullets, comes Vinayak Chandrasekaran ’s movie about a man whose biggest problem is that he snores. He’s married to a woman whose biggest problem is that she thinks she brings bad luck. The characters surrounding this couple are also interesting, perhaps more interesting – a couple who can’t get pregnant, a sister with a secret boyfriend, a mother who is loving and snide at the same time, and an older OK Kanmani type couple that screams goals when it comes to chemistry. This is a middle class film about middle class problems, and it doesn’t aspire to be anything else. The characters look and behave like people we know, the lines sound like conversations we’ve been part of or overheard. What’s not to like about a film where romance happens over chicken puff and bun-butter-jam? The cast – Manikandan, Meetha Raghunath, Ramesh Thilak, Raichal Rebecca, Balaji Sakthivel, Saivam Kala and others – are right on the money in their performances. The drama in the second half is somewhat stretched, but even so, you like everyone enough to stay invested in their tears and smiles.

Best Tamil Movies of 2023 - MovieCrow Annual Ranking

MovieCrow Annual Ranking - Best Tamil Movies of 2023

2023 was a year of some really good movies for Tamil cinema. Solid content aside, the following list of films were also ranked highly by critics and the audience. The top 14 list of Kollywood movies for the year 2023, in order of their MovieCrow aggregate:

1. Por Thozil :  A film that no one saw coming this year, Por Thozhil written by Alfred Prakash, Vignesh Raja and directed by Vignesh Raja is a whodunit thriller that worked wonders both critically and commercially. True to it genre, Por Thozhil had no songs or other deviations, and did an extremely good job of maintaining the suspense intact till the last minute. The unique selling point (USP) about Por Thozhil , which also seems to have worked big time for the movie are its villains; despite the characters being aged and not physically threatening, their mere screen presence sent chills down the viewers' spine. Ashok Selvan and Sarath Kumar as conflicting lead stars served as backbones.

2. Viduthalai: Part 1 : This film is a heart-wrenching period crime thriller based on B. Jeyamohan's Thunaivan , and in turn police brutality. Directed by Vetrimaaran, Viduthalai: Part 1 is one of the few films this year that earned the praise of critics in all departments - p lot, narration, performances, background score,  cinematography, et all. Comedy actor Soori made his debut as a lead with this film, and Vetrimaaran as a filmmaker stood out once again by making his viewers completely forget of the Soori the Tamil audience is used to. The opening train sequence and voice over by Vetrimaaran served as cherry on top of this gritty tale.

3. Chithha : SU Arunkumar directed Chithha produced by and starring actor Siddharth is a compelling and haunting film on child abuse. Despite the film's title (which means paternal uncle), the movie focusses on not just a bonding between a niece and her father's younger brother, but also between two friends, family members and romantic partners. Chittha may not be unexplored territory for Tamil cinema, but the presentation surely was new and very relevant.

4. Jigarthanda DoubleX : Highlighting the plight of tribal people, and how governments and those in authority take undue advantage of this populace, was a big theme in Tamil cinema this year. If Viduthalai: Part 1 was a serious tale on the same, Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda DoubleX  highlighted this with a lot of light-hearted moments. The movie remained glorious regardless, and Karthik Subbaraj's surprise after surprise, leaving whole lots to unpack, is what made Jigarthanda DoubleX a 2023 favourite.

5. Ponnyin Selvan: II : Despite being based on the celebrated  writing by Amarar Kalki, the Ponniyin Selvan movies stand testament to the pedigree of one of Tamil cinema's finest directors - Mani Ratnam. The ace filmmaker  took on a huge responsibility with these films, and Ponniyin Selvan: II reinforces that he has done his best justice to the epic Tamil novel.  The  web of conspiracies, mysteries, political turmoil, et all, was presented in the most tasteful manner in PS-2 , ensuring a full cinematic experience this year.

6. Maaveeran : If Hero saw Sivakarthikeyan, fighting the system in the guise of a super-hero, Maaveeran showcased the actor taking on the powerful once again, but with actual super-hero qualities  this time.  The fantasy action comedy written by Madonne Ashwin, Chandru A, directed by Madonne Ashwin was the full package, earning applause from both the critics and audience this year.

7. Dada : Written and directed by debutant Ganesh K Babu, Dada is loosely based on true life events of the filmmaker's friend. The 135-minute film starring Kavin, Aparna Das touched on the topic of parenthood being gender-neutral, and struck a chord with the MZ generation of the Tamil audience.

8.  Jailer : It had been a hot minute since Rajinikanth delivered a hit to the liking of his audience, and this Nelson Dilipkumar directed film of 2023 put an end to this yearning. Despite varying complaints from critics, Jailer  served to the taste of regional Tamil audience, and fans were more than delighted to see their favourite 72 year old [Rajinikanth has turned 73 since] in slick action avatar.

9.  Leo : With several Hollywood inspired themes,  Leo  directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj was the 2023 addon to the filmmaker's Lokesh Cinematic Universe aka the LCU. Starring Vijay, Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Gautham Menon, Madonna Sebastin among others, this action outing unlocked lead star Vijay in a new dimension, an served as a treat to both his fans and otherwise.

10. Irugapatru : Written and directed by Yuvaraj Dhayalan, Irugapatru is a tale of different types of marriages conflicts, and is another film that seems to have struck a chord with the MZ generation of Tamil film audience this year. It's a feel-good movie that preaches to tightly hold on to your significant other.

11. Good Night : Relationship endurement was another major theme in Tamil films this year, and Good Night touched on this topic with a twist. Written and directed by debutant  Vinayak Chandrasekaran, this film starring Manikandan, Meetha Raghunath was a simple yet relatable tale.

12. Ayothi : The fight to not loose the relevance of regional language over Hindi imposition, is often misconstrued as intolerance towards Hindi speaking Indians by the Tamil general public. A film like Ayothi shatters this myth, and also showcases that the Hindu-Muslim intolerance upheld religiously by North Indians will always loose in front of sheer humanity. Written and directed by debutant  R. Manthira Moorthy, the emotionally-high  Ayothi stars actor Sasikumar in the lead.

Special Mention:

13. Bommai Nayagi : Written and directed by debutant Shan, Bommai Nayagi backed by director Pa. Ranjith was another stirring tale on child sexual abuse this year. Yogi Babu as a helpless father fighting for justice for his nine-year-old daughter, who has been subject to sexual assault by two men, was the focal point of this social drama. He along with child actor Srimathi breathed life into this important film.

14. Parking : Another praise-worthy attempt by a debut filmmaker this year, Parking written and directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan touches a territory popularized by Malayalam movies. The light-hearted nature of the film, along with funny aspects of everyday characters, is what made Parking enjoybale. The film stars Harish Kalyan, MS Bhaskar, Indhuja among others.

Vaathi is a social drama movie that shows the eye-opening reality of our country and sends an inspiring message to the audience. It is undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2023 because of its storyline that keeps us engaged till the end, and a stellar star cast including Dhanush, Samyukta Menon, and Samuthirakani among others. It tells the story of a teacher who teaches in a private school and raises his voice against the extreme level of privatization and commercialization of school- in turn making education expensive and feels like a luxury instead of a necessity.

From Dada to Chithha: The Ten Best Tamil Movies of 2023

10 Best 2023 Tamil Movies: In 2023, Tamil cinema has suffered from one major issue, which, in hindsight, seems to be perenially inbuilt into Tamil cinema, i.e., our filmmakers’ obsession with making an idea or subject ‘mainstream’ to the extent that their work becomes muddled and diluted. This year has had such a fair share of ‘intriguing-yet-lacklustre’ films On the other hand, some young filmmakers focus more on political correctness, ideology, and messaging that they forget to make a cinema. Naturally, these promising Tamil filmmakers are yet to learn that good intentions don’t make good cinema.

As usual, Tamil cinema’s massive stars are satisfied with mediocre outputs. Why shouldn’t they be complacent when such below-par cinema is wholly embraced at the box office? And we wish the filmmakers who direct these star vehicles spend more time sculpting the script than championing their film in the YouTube channel interviews. Nevertheless, we have some laudable works amidst all these exasperating trends in the 2023 Tamil cinema.

While Tamil directors have attempted to touch diverse genres in 2023, social dramas still remain the pivotal source of well-crafted Tamil cinema. Apart from the ten + two 2023 Tamil movies mentioned here, quite a few generally acclaimed films are left out solely because they didn’t work for me as much as the ones mentioned here. This includes Irugapatru (relationship drama), Bommai Nayagi (social drama), Parking (drama thriller), and Thalaikoothal (social drama). Although PS Vinoth’s brilliant debut, Koozhangal (Pebbles ), had its OTT debut in 2023, I have considered it a 2021 film (also the year I watched it), and hence it’s not part of the list.

Honorable Mentions:

Yaathisai_Tamil Movies 2023

There are very few historical fiction or period dramas in Tamil cinema, especially for a land that boasts of possessing thousands of years of history. Most of what we have also come across as veneration of old kingdoms or tales of oppression set during the British colonization. Therefore, Dharani Rasendran’s Yaathisa i is a breath of fresh air because it tries to take you back to the 7th-Century Pandya Kingdom. It was the era when King Ranadheera Pandiyan reigned supreme after defeating the mighty Cholas and the Cheras.

Yaathisai follows a power-obsessed Kothi (Seyon), a young man from the exiled Einar Clan. He plans to assassinate Ranadheeran (Shakthi Mithran) and take his fort, situated in what used to be Chola heartlands. If Kothi’s plan succeeds, the scattered warriors of Cholas vow to come to his aid. The film is made with extremely limited resources, and the technical shortcomings definitely take you out of the narrative on many occasions. The characters aren’t fleshed out very well, and some acting performances are below average.

Yet the filmmaker efficiently guides us through the ancient era’s cultural and social set-up. Unlike the contemporary attempts to idealize the old Tamil kingdoms, Yaathisai lays bare the vicious nature of war and those seeking power and authority. Overall, the film is watchable for its sheer ambition and passion.

Ayothi_Tamil Movies 2023

Manthira Moorthy’s debut feature, Ayothi, follows the tragic journey of a family from Ayodhya to Rameswaram. The father (Yashpal Sharma) is a prejudiced and authoritative individual who decides to take his wife, young daughter (Preethi Asrani), and son on a pilgrimage. But an unfortunate incident (on their way to Rameshwaram from Madurai) deeply impacts the family, and a total stranger (Sasi Kumar) helps them through each of the ensuing obstacles. Ayothi deals with the familiar themes of humanity and compassion in an increasingly divided and apathetic world. The filmmaker does a good job of crafting the complexities surrounding the central conflict. The characters mostly look real, and the performance of Preethi Asrani complements the narrative. And it’s fun to watch Sasi Kumar play a role that’s tailor-made for him.

Ayothi’ s flaws are something that often plagues well-intentioned Tamil dramas. One is the loud and contrived melodrama; the other is the infuriatingly bad background score. The film can easily generate engaging drama through the characters’ predicament itself. But the director batters us with unnecessary soap opera moments that almost make us not care about the characters.

10. Por Thozhil

Por Thozhil

Tamil cinema’s fascination with template serial killer thrillers continues with debutant director Vignesh Raja’s Por Thozhil. Set in 2010, the film revolves around a rookie cop (Ashok Selvan) and a senior police officer (Sarath Kumar) pursuing a serial killer with a distinct MO. Writers Alfred Raja & Vignesh Raja build up the narrative twists and turns in a fairly engaging manner. From a genre viewpoint, Por Thozhil is sharply focused without wasting time on unnecessary subplots. Viewers unversed in serial-killer thrillers will enjoy the cat-and-mouse game as new layers of mystery are unraveled every time the cops seem to be closing in on the suspect.

The performances are adequate enough, and Sarath Kumar is especially good in a restrained role. Por Thozhil does have a relatively better serial killer backstory than the awful one in Ram Kumar’s Ratsasan (2018). However, Ram Kumar’s film was superior in sustaining the thriller atmosphere. The chief issue with Tamil serial killer movies is that they don’t seem to have fully grasped the idea behind the origins of serial murderers, although in this case, there are even references to John Douglas and Criminal Psychology. Like the heavyhanded messaging in Mysskin’s Psycho (2020), Por Thozhil also annoys us with its mindless take on love, trauma , and nurture. And the dialogues are unbearably clunky when the film tries to make its point.

Dada

Debutant director Ganesh K Babu’s Dada starts on a promising note. It was pretty well-staged, and the melodrama was kept in check. Final-year college students Manikandan (Kavin) and Sindhu’s (Aparna Das) romantic relationship is tested when Sindhu gets pregnant, and their respective families abandon them. The couple’s financial situation and Mani’s flawed nature cause a rift in the relationship, and Sindhu abruptly leaves him after giving birth to a boy. Mani raises his son, Adithya, and a few years later lands a decent job. Since it’s a romance drama, a series of coincidences put Sindhu in the same workplace. This is when the movie starts becoming too mainstream and silly.

Considering the title, I expected the main focus would be on single fatherhood – the myriad struggles Mani faces while raising Adithya in those four years. But the father-son bond is shown through a montage and a few superfluous scenes. The naturalistic tone in the first act is replaced with highly cinematic turns in the second act. However, what specifically irritates us is the stretch Ganesh Babu infuses juvenile humor through Mani and Sindhu’s colleagues. Even the subject of workplace sexual harassment becomes an ingredient for such absurdly staged comedy. The lead performances – from Kavin and Aparna – are pretty solid, and one could wish the filmmaker had stayed with their characters and chucked the flabby portions.

Farhana

Nelson Venkatasan’s Farhana revolves around its titular character, played by Aishwarya Rajesh, who takes up a job at a call center due to her family’s financial difficulties. Though the credit-card selling job is tiring, Farhana enjoys the freedom of being out of her conservative household and meeting new people. Subsequently, Farhana’s burgeoning financial needs push her to shift departments and take a job that pays more. But there’s a catch, and the ensuing situation turns her life into a nightmare. Nelson has attempted to make an edge-of-the-seat thriller from the online stalker storyline. He has succeeded chiefly due to the solid characterizations and by keeping the villain mostly off-screen (Selvaraghavan’s performances are so one-note that it seems like a good decision).

Thankfully, Farhana isn’t too conservative in its messaging; it’s less of a mislaid cautionary tale and more of a woman empowerment drama. Moreover, Nelson Venkatasan breaks away from the awful Muslim stereotypes pervading Tamil cinema. Aishwarya Rajesh’s effortlessly brilliant performance makes us root for the character’s wellbeing. However, the staging on a few occasions (for instance, the dreadfully performed and shot opening sequence) and the very convenient final act stop the film from becoming a top-notch thriller drama.

7. Ponniyin Selvan: Part II

Ponniyin Selvan: Part II

Based on Kalki’s popular five-part novel , Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: Part II further follows the conspiracy against the Chola dynasty by enemy forces within and outside the empire. While Part I spent much of its overstuffed narrative establishing the characters and their conflicts, the second and concluding part has better pacing and more dramatic depth. Ravi Varman’s alluring cinematography, Mani Ratnam’s distinct staging techniques, and AR Rahman’s score are the chief highlights of this condensed adaptation of the source material. Of course, Mani Ratnam is never the right filmmaker to explore the complex political machinations of ancient kingdoms. Therefore, key takeaways from both parts are his lyrical storytelling and fascinating character moments.

The director’s focus in Part II is more on the doomed romance of Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) and justifiably removes the conflicts of the peripheral characters. Though Karikalan should have been played by an actor much younger than Vikram, the actor’s intense performance doesn’t offer much space to find fault. Ironically, the film falters as it tries to resolve the conflicts surrounding the titular Ponniyin Selvan (Jayam Ravi). Even the much anticipated Karikalan-Nandini face-off is anticlimactic. The last half-hour of Part II is terrible and rushed, and some of the characters’ decisions are baffling and unintentionally hilarious.

Though Mani Ratnam’s five-and-a-half-hour movie isn’t a wholly successful movie adaptation, the veteran director’s craftsmanship keeps us engaged.

6. good night .

Good Night_2023 Tamil Movies

Vinayak Chandrasekaran’s debut feature, Good Night, is a delightful drama with ordinary, relatable middle-class characters. The narrative revolves around Mohan (Manikandan), an IT employee afflicted by a snoring problem, the reason behind his nickname, “Motor.” Mohan’s insecurities and fears only get worse when he marries Anu (Meetha Raghunath). Despite Anu’s compassion and reassuring nature, Mohan is preoccupied with finding a way to end his snoring and save the relationship. The biggest strength of Good Night is Vinayak’s light-hearted touch that balances the comedy and emotions.

The other commendable aspect of the film is the flawless casting. Manikandan, Ramesh Thilak, and Meetha bring genuine depth to the slice-of-life drama. Moreover, the relationship dynamics between Mohan’s sister, Maha (Raichal Rabecca), and her husband, Ramesh, are relentlessly fascinating, and a movie could be made with them as central characters. Sean Roldan’s music and background score blend well with the narrative rather than overemphasize the emotions. The film’s problem is the slackened screenplay in the second half. It mainly gets annoyingly contrived and stretched in the last half-hour. Nevertheless, for the most part, Good Night remains a refreshing and heartwarming family drama .

5. Maamannan

Maamannan

After making two hard-hitting dramas, Mari Selvaraj has become one of the vital Tamil filmmakers. Karnan (2021) notably showcased his talents for incorporating myths and metaphors through a distinct visual language. Mari Selvaraj’s third film was highly anticipated since it featured gifted comedian Vadivelu in a rarely seen restrained avatar. Unfortunately, the film was a disappointment in some ways, the chief being the too-conventional and cinematic nature of the film’s second half. Vadivelu plays the titular character, Maamannan, a ruling party MLA from the oppressed caste. The MLA and his estranged son, Athiveeran (Udayanidhi Stalin), are drawn into a bloody conflict with a privileged and casteist local party head, Rathnavel ( Fahadh Faasil ).

Maamannan efficiently portrays the unholy nexus between caste and politics and how the virulent caste system denies any social mobility for the Dalits. Mari Selvaraj also depicts the traumatic experiences that follow one’s life just because of their caste identity. Vadivelu is truly extraordinary as a vulnerable yet persevering father and politician. Nevertheless, the film starts losing its way as it tries to be a politically correct commercial entertainer. Even Selvaraj’s penchant for using animal imagery in fascinating ways feels clumsy here. There’s a considerable difference between low-key and lifeless performance; Udhayanidhi Stalin’s screen presence mostly falls in the latter category. Maamannan is kind of a sad slump for Mari Selvaraj. Yet it’s a fairly engaging drama that doesn’t reduce the Dalit characters to faceless victims like most Tamil movies.

4. jigarthanda double x.

Jigarthanda Double X_2023 Tamil Movies

Karthik Subbaraj is a self-indulgent filmmaker whose homage to Quentin Tarantino , Spaghetti Westerns, and Rajnikanth sometimes impacts us more than his storylines. In fact, the writer/director’s last two films – Jagame Thandiram & Mahaan – suffered due to an underwhelming script that constantly swayed between amateurish and intriguing. Yet Mr. Subbaraj has always had a fine command over his directorial craft. With Jigarthanda Double X – a spiritual prequel to the 2011 Jigarthanda – he has wielded a more engaging script and streamlined his indulgences, which largely works. Set in 1975, Subbaraj once again pits a creator (filmmaker) against a destroyer (ruthless gangster).

In Double X , Raghava Lawrence plays the feared Madurai don, Alliyus Caesar, who is a self-avowed fan of Clint Eastwood . His wish to become a movie star makes him cross paths with filmmaker Ray Dasan (the ever-brilliant SJ Suryah),  who is actually a prisoner given the job to kill Caesar in exchange for a pardon. The beauty of cinema and nature, however, pushes them to introspect their choices in life. The brilliant cat-and-mouse games in the first half of Double X are very well staged, particularly the rousing pre-interval sequence involving a gun and an 8mm camera. Karthik Subbaraj also brings authenticity to the struggles of the tribal community in the later half, which touches on some of the actual events in the Tamil Nadu political sphere.

Yet, Double X falters towards the final act. The metamorphosis of the central characters seems too sudden and inorganic. Caesar’s epiphany and his speech are too theatrical even for a Karthik Subbaraj Padam. It’s followed with a bombastic twist and change of heart that further strains credulity. Nevertheless, Double X has quite a few bewitching big-screen moments to deserve the Martin Scorsese meme, ‘This Is Cinema.’

3. maaveeran .

Maaveeran_2023 Tamil Movies

Madonne Ashwin’s debut feature, Mandela (2021), starring Yogi Babu, was one of the best political satires in Tamil cinema. But it’s always a concern when a promising debut filmmaker collaborates with a star actor for his next project. Thankfully, Maaveeran is this year’s Tamil cinema’s only sensible star vehicle that doesn’t entirely lose sight of its core themes. Sivakarthikeyan can try a little too much to cater to his young audiences, that his projects can be unforgivingly cringeworthy. In Maaveeran , Sivakarthikeyan truly embodies his character and offers a multi-faceted performance.

Indian cinema has often portrayed timid protagonists who transform into courageous superheroes in the latter half after a life-altering experience. Madonne Ashwin puts an innovative spin on this mass entertainer storyline, as the hero’s journey to manifest his strength happens through his personal storyteller – a voice only the hero, Sathya, hears. This superpower or anomaly is fascinating since our apprehensive protagonist is a comic strip illustrator. And the thing he creates starts transforming him. It’s a beautiful take on storytelling in general. Furthermore, Madonne Ashwin perfectly blends the social themes of gentrification and corruption into this ‘rise-of-a-warrior’ story. The director also excels in setting up the crowd-pleasing action set pieces.

Maaveeran does have a ‘second-half problem’ that has afflicted many 2023 Tamil movies. The highly relevant social commentary established in the early part of the film devolves into a simple hero vs. villain conflict. But still, the film has an interesting ending – despite the poor CGI in the climax –  and Ashwin’s pointed political observations never get preachy. Many undeserving, inane sequels are being made in Tamil cinema. But I hope Madonne Ashwin makes an equally engaging sequel for Maaveeran.

Viduthalai: Part I

Viduthalai: Part I_2023 Tamil Movies

Vetrimaaran is one of the few filmmakers in Tamil cinema with a massive fan following. His films, though mostly unfold within the confines of the genre, visualize the struggles and agony of the downtrodden. Viduthalai: Part I , which tells the story of State-sanctioned violence and oppression, is yet another compelling work in Vetrimaaran’s filmography. Set in 1987, the film follows a humanistic rookie cop, Kumaresan (an unbelievably nuanced Soori), sent to a remote forest village to join the police force assigned to curb the rebellion of the locals against a mining company.

The People’s Army, headed by Perumal, aka Vaathiyar ( Vijay Sethupathi ), is accused of terrorist activities by the state machinery. Subsequently, the government set up a task force that brutally interrogates the Adivasi villagers suspected of aiding the People’s Army. Kumaresan undergoes an inner journey as he witnesses the abuse of power and the plight of the persecuted people. Viduthalai: Part I has the most disturbing visuals in the recent Tamil cinema and poses thought-provoking questions about the nature of power and governance.

Read More: Jai Bhim (2021) Review: A Loud Legal Drama that Iconizes its Protagonist at the Cost of Its Subjects

The problem with Viduthalai is that it doesn’t have a robust script like Vada Chennai (2018), and even the filmmaking style is sometimes all over the place. Moreover, we have only seen half the film, and it’s hard to judge the overall impact of the narrative. Loosely based on Jeyamohan’s short story, ‘Thunaivan.’ Viduthalai would have been a much more impactful, self-contained story had it deeply showcased the perspective of Kumerasan. But the film in its present form looks a bit discursive. Vetrimaaran, in the interviews and round-table discussions, seems to be overselling his struggles with making Viduthalai (as if it’s his own ‘Apocalypse Now’ or ‘Fitzcarraldo’). While we understand the challenges he faced, at least with Part II, I wish Vetrimaaran doesn’t follow every exciting idea he has and, in the process, make it a rhetoric rather than a film.

1. Chithha

Chithha_2023 Tamil Movies

While Tamil cinema is starting to deal with some mature, never-touched-before subjects, the film form often belies the filmmakers’ noble intentions. S.U. Arun Kumar’s Chithha , bolstered by a sensible filmmaking style, explores a profoundly painful scenario in the most graceful manner possible. One of the frustrating aspects of this year’s Tamil cinema is the dull characterizations, where characters seem to solely exist to serve the narrative progress. The biggest strength in Arun Kumar’s writing is that he brings a lived-in feel to the characters. Most importantly, we understand each character and the dynamics between them through their simple gestures or actions instead of burdening us with plainly expository dialogues.

Chithha revolves around Eshwaran (Siddharth), who works as a supervisor at the sanitation department of Palani municipality. He lives with his sister-in-law (Eshwaran’s elder brother has passed away) and his eight-year-old niece, Sundari, aka Settai. Their lives are torn apart when Sundari is kidnapped by a pedophile.  The film’s unsettling portions are remarkably suggestive, yet the chilling implications of the details and what we partially observe can traumatize us.

Related to Best 2023 Tamil Movies: The 30 Best Indian Movies of 2022

Chithha does have its share of flaws. It isn’t always a smooth transition from being a drama to a thriller to providing a discourse on masculinity. Another major issue that afflicts not just this film but most of the good Tamil cinema is the unsubtle, spoon-feeding background score. I also didn’t like the implications of the epilogue, which is antithetical to the point the film resoundingly made a few moments before. Yet the earnest, grounded performances from Siddharth (also the film’s producer) and Nimisha Sajayan, alongside Arun’s deft handling of the socially relevant theme, make Chithha a highly impactful and best work among the 2023 Tamil movies. Finally, kudos to that scene involving the woman in the share-auto. The Tamil filmmakers obsessed with creating ‘goosebumps moments’ can learn something from that.

Arun Kumar is an ardent cinebuff, who likes to analyze movie to its minute detail. He believes in the transformative power and shared-dream experience of cinema.

GOAT Breaks Rajinikanth Film s Lifetime Box Office Record

Vijay's "GOAT" Breaks Box Office Records Ahead of Release: Vijay's highly anticipated 68th film, "The Greatest of All Time" (GOAT), directed by Venkat Prabhu, is poised to make an unprecedented impact on the box office as it prepares for a grand release tomorrow. The film, which showcases Vijay in dual roles, has already set several records even before its official debut.

Produced by AGS Entertainment, "GOAT" will be released on an impressive 5,000 screens worldwide. This massive distribution is a testament to the film's widespread appeal and the excitement surrounding its release. In Tamil Nadu, the film is set to be screened on 1,100 screens, reflecting Vijay's substantial fan base in the region. The anticipation extends beyond Tamil Nadu, with "GOAT" scheduled to release on approximately 700 screens in Kerala. Gokulam Films, which holds the distribution rights in Kerala, has arranged around 4,000 shows for the film's opening day.

The film's extensive screen count in Kerala makes "GOAT" the highest screen count film from outside the state. The film is also generating significant buzz in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, where screenings will commence as early as 4 AM. The early start times in these states indicate a strong demand from fans, many of whom have already secured their tickets in advance.

The advance booking for "GOAT" has been nothing short of phenomenal. Tickets sold out within minutes of becoming available, and the initial revenue figures are impressive. Reports indicate that "GOAT" has already earned ₹16 crore from advance bookings in Tamil Nadu alone. The film has also grossed₹5.5 crore in the United States,₹1.3 crore in Kerala, and₹3.4 crore in Karnataka.

With a total advance collection exceeding₹30 crore, "GOAT" has already surpassed the lifetime earnings of Rajinikanth's "Lal Salaam," which earned₹30 crore globally this year. This achievement underscores the immense anticipation and fan support for Vijay's latest film, setting a new benchmark in the industry before its official release.
