Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

  • 3-minute read
  • 12th August 2022

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Subject:Verb:
I/you/we/theyDo
He/she/itDoes

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

Subject:Verb:
I/you/we/theyDid
He/she/itDid

We did our homework last night.

She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

We do not do our homework every night.

She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Find this useful?

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

Which is the right response for the question "Did you do your homework?"

I am trying to refresh my grammar and I want to remember what was the right past tense for this question

Did you do your homework? Yes I did it Yes I have done it Yes I had done it

Which is correct and when should I use others ?

3 Answers 3

“Yes, I did it” is the right answer to “Did you do your homework?”. But it would be more likely for the question to be “Have you done your homework?”, to which the answer is “Yes, I have done it” (or in speech, nearly always “Yes, I’ve done it”).

The difference is that “Did you do your homework?” is asking about the past —— did you, at some time in the past, do your homework? “Have you done your homework?” is asking about the present situation — are you, right now, in a state of having done your homework?

  • I think "Did you do your homework?" would be idiomatic in American English, but I'll leave it to the Americans to suggest what the natural reply would be. –  Kate Bunting Commented Sep 9, 2020 at 7:52
Yes I did it
Yes I have done it

are correct and good responses to the question. It would be normal to reflect the form of the question, so if asked "Did you do your homework?" you would normally say "Yes, I did it." If asked "Have you done your homework?" (which means the same thing) you would answer "Yes, I have done it."

"Yes I had done it" is pluperfect tense and incorrect here.

Do - Does - Did - Done

English grammar.

The word DO appears a lot in English.

This is because it can be a verb TO DO (Do / Does / Did / Done) and can also be an AUXILIARY verb (Do / Does / Did).

The Verb - To Do

The verb TO DO has four forms.

  • Present Tense: Do / Does
  • Past Tense: Did
  • Past Participle: Done

TO DO - Present Tense - (Do / Does)

The present tense of TO DO is:

I / you / we / they - DO he / she / it - DOES

  • I do my laundry on Saturdays.
  • They do their chores when they arrive home.
  • He does nothing all day.
  • She does charity work when she has time.

TO DO - Past Tense - (Did)

The past tense of DO is DID for all subjects:

I / you / we / they / he / she / it - DID

  • I did my homework in record time.
  • We did everything we could to help.
  • He did a somersault on the trampoline

TO DO - Past Participle - (Done)

The past participle of DO is DONE . Remember that past participles are accompanied by TO HAVE or TO BE (in the correct tense):

  • I have done my homework.
  • He has done a good job.
  • The video will show you how it is done .
  • The report was done on time.

TO DO - To replace a verb

We sometimes use the verb DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This replacement is more common in informal spoken English:

  • Do I need to do my hair? (do = brush or comb)
  • Have you done the dishes yet? (done = washed)
  • I'll do the kitchen if you do the lawns (do = clean, do = mow)

DO vs DOES in Questions

To make a question in the Simple Present Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary Do or Does at the beginning of the question before the subject.

Affirmative: You speak Arabic. Question: Do you speak Arabic?

You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to change it into a question. We use Do when the subject is I , you , we or they .

Affirmative: He speaks Arabic. Question: Does he speak Arabic?

When the subject is he , she or it , we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question.

NOTE: We DON'T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can, must, might, should etc.)

Examples of DO and DOES in questions:

  • Do you like my shirt?
  • Does he drive to work?
  • Does she like hamburgers?
  • Where do you live?

Notice there can be other words before Do and Does such as Question Words (Who, What etc.)

DID in Questions

To make a question in the Past Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary DID at the beginning of the question or before the main subject.

DID is used with regular AND irregular verbs in English. (Exception is To Be and Modal Verbs such as Can )

Both Do and Does in present tense questions become Did in past tense questions. Compare the following:

Present: Do they live in Spain? Past: Did they live in Spain?

The main verb ( live in the example above) is in its base form (of the infinitive). The auxiliary DID shows that the question is in the past tense .

NOTICE: The only difference between a question in the present tense and a question in the past tense is the change in the auxiliary verb.

Examples of DID in questions:

  • Did you visit a museum while you were there?
  • Did the bus arrive late?
  • Did she like the surprise?
  • Why did you say that?

DON'T - DOESN'T - Negative Sentences

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't in the present sentence.

Don't and Doesn't are used in negative sentences with all verbs EXCEPT To Be and Modal verbs (Can, might, should etc.).

Affirmative: You speak Spanish. Negative: You don't speak Spanish.

You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the subject is I , you , we or they .

Affirmative: He speaks Spanish. Negative: He doesn't speak Spanish.

When the subject is he , she or it , we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a negative sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the negative sentence.

Examples of sentences using don't and doesn't :

  • I don't like junk food.
  • We don't need a dictionary.
  • He doesn't want to get out of bed.
  • It doesn't rain in the desert.

DIDN'T (DID NOT) - Negative Sentences

In the past tense Didn't is used to make a negative sentence for all subjects (I / you / we / they / he / she / it). This is for regular AND irregular verbs in English. (Exception is To Be and Modal Verbs such as Can )

Compare the following:

Present: They don't live in Japan. Past: They didn't live in Japan.

The main verb ( live in the example above) is in its base form (of the infinitive). The auxiliary DIDN'T shows that the sentence is negative AND in the past tense.

NOTICE: The only difference between a negative sentence in the present tense and a negative sentence in the past tense is the change in the auxiliary verb.

Examples of sentences using Didn't :

  • I didn't want to go
  • He didn't study for the exam.
  • We didn't have time to finish the report.
  • They didn't like the movie.

DO - For Emphasis

Sometimes Do / Does / Did are used in positive sentences to give special emphasis . Note that when speaking, the word ( do/does/did ) is stressed.

  • I do want to go. (We put stress on the word DO to emphasize that we want to go)
  • You do need to take an umbrella.
  • He does like spinach. (You may be surprised but yes, he likes spinach)
  • I did study. (Contrary to what you may believe... yes, I studied)

Notice that Did is used for positive sentences in the past tense and that the main verb is in its base form.

Do can also appear at the beginning of an imperative sentence to emphasize the importance of that imperative verb.

  • Do call when you arrive.
  • Do tell him that I will be waiting for him.

Simple Past Tense (Did) – With Explanations Pictures and Exercises

simple past tense

Simple past tense (past simple tense) is a verb tense that describes completed actions or past habits before now. It is also used to talk about a series of events in the past. “Did” is the helping verb of simple past tense. For affirmative (positive) sentences we use past simple form of a verb.

⬤ Formation of simple past tense

For affirmative sentences we use the formation of “verb + ed” . For negative sentences and questions we use the auxiliary “did” or “did not”. See the chart below to learn the structure of simple past tense.

i want to know about use of shall and will,, i know that shall use with i,& we but whenever our teachers use will with i and we why ?

“Shall” has a few different uses.

1) It can mean the same thing as “I will” — “I will tell you tomorrow”/”I shall tell you tomorrow”.

2) It can be used to talk about something that has to be done, or to tell people to do something. “Students shall write their names at the top of the page.”

3) It can be used in questions — to talk about something that could happen, or make a suggestion. “Shall I come back later?” could mean that you are asking someone if you should come back later or not, or that you are suggesting you could come back later if they want.

“Shall” is very common in the UK, but not at all in North America. In North America we would use “will”/”must”/”will” + “maybe”/”could” instead.

Thinking of things in English and not in your original language is not something I can teach you… it is something that must happen in your brain. Once you begin to “switch your brain” over to English, then you can begin to think of words in English. I can only suggest going to an English speaking country, or talking to yourself in English.

' src=

You used word absolutely correct and i am really impressed with this.

Thanks for such kind of great artical putting here.

hi ronnie sent me your email address and id plz contact me

Hi teacher ronnie! im just confused, how about “IT”? can we say IT did or IT didn’t?

It + did/didn’t.

Hi, Ronnie! I like your way of teaching! Because you did not mention how to use the “It” in the present and in the past?

' src=

teacher where we use names with do or does i think does

' src=

Hi.. could you please help me with the grammer in this.. usually we use does with he.we could say he doesn’t calle me..but in spoken English we could also say he didn’t call me..so which is correct?

' src=

I want to learn the usage of DO , does and didn’t with IT , That and any particular object.

Thanks for Good teach. it is clear to use Do, Does and did in talk.

' src=

hello ronnie, I love your lectures. I watched your lectures have, has, had and this one.I got a doubt, ‘I do have’ and ‘I have’ is these both same or different or wrong.

' src=

i don’t want love again, because my heart is broken

' src=

Ronnie is completely right when she says that must happen in your brain. It’s easy, and everything you have to do is to collect very large fund of words, adjectives, verbs, nouns, adverbs, preposition etc., in order to use adequate word to describe something that is instantly in your mind. I did it :))))))

Eurekaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.. You are great.

its relly amazing!thanks a lot

' src=

More correctly grammar? you mean to say please use better grammar? or Please use correct grammar. It’s not polite to try and find fault, Especially when your unable to use correct grammar also. The lesson was very good for those who may not have a good understanding of Do, Don’t, Did, Didn’t.

' src=

thank a lot

i have a doubt why we cannot use does has or doesn’t has instead of does have or doesn’t have?for she or he we have to use “has” right but above case why we dont?

We must say “She/He doesn’t have” because the auxiliary verb “do” is the only verb you need to change to suit the subject.

Hi Ms. Ronie, how about “it” what I am gonna use is it “do” or “does” Thanks, have a great day

' src=

What do you think you should use with it? I’ll tell you the answer once you tell me what you think.

“it does” or “it doesn’t” is that correct? or there’s anything else? thanks

Yes! You are correct!

You r a good teacher, thank you

' src=

Thank you too much, I think this website is the best one in the world about learning English, with best regards

thank you sear .. it’s very good

thank you ma’am .. it’s very good

Hi!How are you?you are great!Thank you!

Will you please tackle about Other Pronoun forms? 1. Between you and (I,me),” said Tonya, “we will probably be assigned to the McMeekin account.” The answer is “me”. Why? What is the rule about this?

2. Have you asked Joseph and (she, her) if they plan to attend the seminar?

3. It was not (I, me) who ordered this manual.

4.Please explain my absence to Arthur and (she, her).

5. I do not know (who, whom)our manager selected to replace Pierre.

6. Mr. Parmar is the only broker (who, whom) we called for an appraisal.

Please explain these in a much easier to understand lesson.

Thanks, Joshua

Ah… you are confused because the usage of “whom” and “I” are old school grammar book rules! Whereas “who” and “me” we use nowadays! So, in very OLD FORMAL English, the correct answers are 1.I, 3)I, 5)whom, 6)whom but in spoken English (which ignores a lot of the rules) we would use me, me, who, and who! Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot for these video

Thank you for this lesson. Q. Why don’t talk about “it” ?!

' src=

it + does >> like: he & she

It doesn’t work.

Don’t and doesn’t for speaking only, for writing I should write “do not” and “does not” .. that right ??

What about ( it ) ?

hi ronnie when i spoke to my friends, sometime i get confused because not sure about are you going there or do you go there? please help me with this confusion.

“Are you going there?” is to ask if you plan to go somewhere in the future. Eg: “Are you going to the gym tomorrow?” “Do you go there?” is to ask if the person frequents a place. Eg: “Do you go to Starbucks?” “Do you go to the gym?” — They are asking if you go to these places a lot!

we use HE/SHE/IT whith does and doesn’t or not

please tell the use of would that in which kind of situation we use that….i,m looking forward to hear you in near future is it correct?

in tenses please..and or, like what teacher ronnie did in her teachings with negative and a positive..thanks a lot..God bless..

very goooooooooooooooood side

hello haw are you i love you i am learn english for you :D

egypt ismail nassar

Hi, i would really appreciate if you could help me figure the right word to use here. Should i use ‘don’t or ‘doesn’t in this sentence :

“Chris wants to buy a new book but don’t/doesn’t know which to get”

I think the right verb to use is “doesn’t” because the mention of name is the same as using it for he/she (singular 3rd party)

Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks Ronnie

You are correct!!!!

tnx.. With your lesson, now i can use those verbs in a right manner.. Thank you very much

' src=

hello mam, I like your teaching very much. Now i’m very happy & taking lot of interest in learning how to speak english.Thanx a lot. Can you give me more questios for quiz?

thanxs it is a great website.. i want to learn how does verb changes in present ,past & future using do, dont, does, doesnt, did & didnt

so… fantastic!!! but i have a question:)) is “your mama don’t know” a right english? or “your mama doesn’t know”

“Your mama doesn’t know” is correct!

hi Ronnie, Its great to have a teacher like you. Need to know that if we are beginners then from where to start learning English, I mean about a sequence, that what should be the first topic then the second and so on, like a learning chart. Hope if you can make this easier for all of us.

Thanks & Regards BJ

I think you should learn basic vocabulary and verbs first. Then simple present tense, past and future tense.

Which Is Correct ? I Didnt spend or i didnt spent ? thanks

I didn’t spend is correct. Didn’t is past so you don’t need to change “spend” to past tense!

now i learn something new

thank you very much

' src=

OoOoOh,, Very great and Basic lecture..

Thank you verrrrrrrrrrrrry much..

' src=

i like a lot and understand easly thanks

thanks you save my life… :D

For “does” and “doesn’t” you forgot the pronoun “it.”

Example: ‘It ((the toaster)) doesn’t ususally work. It does sometimes work after I whack it a bit.’ I suggest a dding the nonpersonal pronoun “it” to this lecture — as well as the use of non-pronoun subjects with “do,” “does,” etc.

i like your lesson lovely lesson

thank your very much for this free lesson. your a very good teacher.

what is correct. 1.the house doesn’t/dont have a roof? 2. lot of people don’t/doesn’t have a food on their plate. 3.their wives doesn’t/dont have a money

You have to think if the noun is singular or plural. If it is singular use does/doesn’t. Plural, use do/don’t. You think about this and email me what YOU think the answers are! Good luck!

I took above three questions as my exercise and find the answers below.

1. the house doesn’t have a roof? 2. lot of people don’t have a food on their plate. 3.their wives dont have a money

Please check and correct me if anything wrong.

You need to put a capital letter on every sentence. A food and a money are both wrong. It should be money/food.

Dear Ronnie, Thanks for your good effort. Your exercise is very interesting. I wish you post many exercise so that it will improve english grammer to every one using your net. Thank you and good work. KEEP IT UP.

Dear Ronnie, Thank you very much for your good method of teaching. It is well explained and easy to understand. I have a request if you don’t mind please. I want to know the proper usage of “articles”. Your kind consideration is much appreciated.

' src=

Hi Ronny, i have two questions . first one, What’s diffrence between these sentences. he likes her & he does like her. second question, i answerd these quiz but there one question missunderstand mean this senetnce”She does not like him bescause he is verey meaning her” it mean he not love him because he care her or she hate him because he nosy ..forget to tell you that’s first time to share here but i intearsting & enjoy by your method .so, i singup here & put in my favourit & will follow your video & new news hope to continue

“He likes her” is how we normally say that one person likes another. “He DOES like her”, is ONLY to emphasize that he indeed does like her! ”She does not like him because he is very meaning her”…. This should say ….””She does not like him because he is very mean to her”. It means that he is a bad person and not nice to her, so she does not like him! Thanks for watching and good luck!

yeah,Roonie ..i understand you & thank you alot for your helping. well, i study course english at egypt with forgin Instructores. they follow us & to continue connecation at facebook you will see command mistake when we discusse with them from level one to level 6 .These discusses there help you when you prepare Vido. what are problems with begginer, intermiddiate &advance levels .just write spread your english in google search, you will find first link spread your engilsh at face book after that, plz open discuess tap you will be find student chat there with thier Instructors.really, we have some people teach me from U.S but they are not as like you.Anyway, one day if you will vist egypt ofcourse i’ll hoste you there by free.that’s nice to meet you

Please tell me madam… I am waiting for your reply… its a small thing to you, but for me its a big big biiiiiiiig problem……

Was/were is the past form of “to be” verb. I was here. We were at the park. Did is the past form of do. We use for actions.,,,, I did my homework. I did the laundry. Have/has is present, had is past tense. We use to show possession – I have 5 dogs. She has a headache. I hope that helps!

Please tell me which of the following is correct?

What do jhon and raja do?

why used “do” and not “does”, as we learnt from earlier examples that with names we use “does”

“This is not suitable for our current requirement”. is this sentence correct? if yes which tense

' src=

“This is not suitable for our current requirement” is correct. It is present tense because the verb is “is”.

as per my understanding when we use present continues we have to use am/is/are+v1+ing. but in this sentense i have a confusion “It is not suitable ” i cant use ing here. is this sentence correct ?

“It is not suitable” is correct. You cannot use suitable with ing.

' src=

Hi, thanks Ronnie for this great lesson.it’s very helpful

' src=

Maam Ronnie your awesome, ms Ronnie my question is this, why the baby did not know how to write and how to read, why she could speak very well… I think the best to do is, if you want to know how to speak english fluently regardless of education i would suggests you can always hear the conversation in english language. reading and writing did not really2x essential I think hearing is best method if you to know how to speak English fluently. What do you think ms Ronnie? correct me if I’m wrong… thank and god bless…..

I think it depends on how you learn – some people can just learn by listening, others need to see the words, others need a more physical learning environment. Everyone is different. When I learned Japanese I had to write down the words to remember how to say them….but I didn’t learn the grammar!

how to use would?

' src=

I want to know, why does the word she is used with have ? :S She is the third person and have is used in only negative sentences. :/ If you can help me out of this thing. I’ll be quite pleasured. :D

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”….. I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!

tank you so much Ms Ronnie

Dear Ms. Ronnie Good Day! while telephone conversation the other end of the person asked me that Mr.Vange is there (Vange is my collegue) and I replied that, He is having lunch. Is it right or should i say He is eating. Please Reply me..

Both are correct!

good…thanks teacher

please give me many example

I,we you,they-do(present tense),did(past tense). he,she it-does(present tense),did(past). Is it correct?? “he has done his homework” is this sentence correct? 1.”does she have an extra pen?”(or) “does she has an extra pen” 2.”yes she has” (or) “yes she is having” which is the correct one from above senteces correct? plzzz rply me.

I,we you,they-do(present tense),did(past tense). he,she it-does(present tense),did(past). Is it correct?? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “He has done his homework” is this sentence correct? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.”does she have an extra pen?” YES!!!!!(or) “does she has an extra pen” NO – you don’t need to change have because “does” is changed. 2.”yes she has” YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or) “yes she is having” NO – you cannot use “hav+ing”!

if we are saying anybody then what we can use DO or Does?? 1.”do anybody want to take responsibility” or 2.”does anybody want to take responsibility” or i think often we use “IS” like”is anybody interested in dancing” plzzz i’ll be thankfull to u if u clear my confusion with some examples. Hope u understand my question.

Does anybody is correct = “anybody” is singular! So…has anybody, does anybody, was anybody. “Is anybody” is correct!

With Noun do we use do or does for e.g. Anita do not know English or Anita does not know English. which one is correct

thanks alot Ms ..

I did that Quiz what you gave us !

thanks alot .. keept up !

Mrs. Ronnie , thank you so much :D

i want to ask.. based from your video i found that u used all the personal pronouns as the example.but where is “it”? i could not find it in your video. does it have different usage from the above stated? thank you

It = does/doesn’t. Did/didn’t!

i also would like to ask about is it correct if the questions= a) where does she go? or we can say where does she goes? however when i asked my friends most of them answered the answer is a. why?

You only have to change the auxiliary verb “do” to does, You do not have to change BOTH verbs (do and go)!

Ronnie,Thanks!! But I have a question, very very silly question for you:What differences between verb “to be”,which can be “do,does” and “am,is,are”???I know it sounds silly, but it my problem sometime…))

' src=

Your question is not silly! It is a very good question as many people are confused with to be and do! First of all do/does IS NOT part of “to be”! “To be” is only am, is, or are! Basically, if you have an adjective in the sentence, you are going to use “to be” Ex… I am tired. Tired is an adjective so you cannot say I do tired! I am hungry. She is thirsty. They are smart. “Do” is an action verb, and we use it with a noun- “I do my homework”. Homework is a noun. You cannot say I am homework!!! He does aerobics. She does the dishes, They do math.

Thanks,Ronnie! You open a great secret for me)))

Awesome!!! thanks alot!

Wonder which is a better line- “Do you want to grab dinner” or “Did you want to grab dinner”. What is the difference between the two sentences and what circumstances might be appropriate to use one or the other. Thoughts?

Did you is past tense, but we use this sometimes in informal conversation! Do you is present tense and “proper grammar” if you are asking the person at the moment!

U’re doing a great work to not-english- spoke people (like me). Ur lesson is very good and basic but I have some trouble in listening can’t, didn’t and some negative words ’cause when foreigners say, they always swallow it and make me misunderstand. Please, help me. I hope that there aren’t too much grammar mistake in my message. Thank u for ur all ur help.

HI RONNIE YOU DID GOOD JOBU I LIKE IT

Hi can you tell me what is correct: “i didnt knew” or “i didnt know”. Thnx xxx

I didn’t know. When we use “did”, we don’t need to change the other words to past tense – only one!!

Where is the subject “it” in this video? otherwise its fine. Why have you dropped down the subject ‘It’?

hi thanks for teaching it is very useful.can you tell us what is adverb?

An adverb describes how the verb is done. Ex. He ran slowly. Slowly=adverb, telling us how he ran.

really styl well

Can you please help me with this: What is the verb in “What does her mother do on Tuesday?” And please explain or elaborate. Thank you.

Does and do are verbs

hi thanks for teaching.can you tell use about comparative and superlative, please?

idonét now when we use do and did

Do= present tense Did= past tense

' src=

grateful ::))

' src=

thank you very much its good for me i am 13 years old

what about CAN???? Will you always have a DO after a CAN???? As in “No can do!!!” Just joking. But you get what a mean! Awesome stuff.

Why do we use for third person the verb likes but when we use did we don’t. ie. He likes vs he didn’t like instead of he didn’t likes.

When we use the auxiliary verb “did”, we don’t need to change the other verb!

thank you Ronni i understand to your lisson.

' src=

Hi Ronnie, I have come accross this site trying to find help for my son (grade 3) with his English. He often makes mistakes with the use of “done” and I don’t know how to explain to him the correct usage, I can only tell him when it sounds wrong. Can you simplify when it is correct to use the word done as in, I did, I have done? The other day I done, I did?

' src=

Done we use with present/past perfect, or as an adjective “I am done”. You cannot use done in simple past.

Thank you for all Ronni. i like your lessons

I you find any mistakes on my grammar, just correct it and I’m glad to know it! thanks!

If I use “didn’t”, Do I need to change the verb that follows? For example, I didn’t make that or I didn’t MADE that? :)

If I use “didn’t”, Do I need to change the verb that follows? NO ! I didn’t make that = correct!!!

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”….. I don’t know WHY – I have no idea why we have ALL they grammar rules that we do – they don’t make sense to me!!

thanks for your lessons, I would like to ask you 2 questions. First I’m confused how to use the verb (Had) Ex, in one sentence you can se had had. I had had a big car, another question is the verb, (being) when can i use being, Ex, if i say , being a bad person is not good, its right, thanks for your help

Had had is past perfect form. (had + p.p) Ex. I had had a dog but it died.I had eaten the apple. Being we use in continuous forms of grammar. Ex. She is being funny, = She to be funny.

Hello Ronnie! I have one question on Present Simple. What form in do we use verb start in the sentence: “At 2 o’clock lessons____again.” With ‘s’ or witout ending? I’m looking forward for your reply. Thanks!

' src=

Because the word “lesson” is plural, you don’t need to use “s”. If the word lesson was singular, you need the “S”.

Hi! Ms Ronnie I’d like to know if “It” is a “Pronoun” too, because i think you forgot it to put there. Thanks!

' src=

Yes, it is a pronoun. You are right – I did forget it! With it we use does!!!

i like your teaching ms ronnie but i would like to learn more about the pronounsiations of diffiicult words

Thanks for your useful teaching video. I like the way you teach and your great voice.Keep on the good work. and kindly keep up u r teach on engvid page and thanks a lot miss ronnie

you with did or no??

Yes! You + did!

First i wanna say thank you, its really a very good videos and its really helpful!!

Second, i have two questions: 1. In this video you didn’t notice to “it” and “we”.. it would make me feel better if you will explain how do we reffer to them. 2 And the other questions is – can i write a sentence like that ” i’m not going” or “she’s not leaving” ? becouse i saw another video that didn’t mention that way – and its got me confused.. you were talking about onlu “he isn’t” and not “he’s not”

the question is they both are ok?

It + does We + do. You can use both he isn’t and he’s not ! I’m not going” and “She’s not leaving” = both correct!

HELP! Which one is correct? 1. What “do” she and her family do on the weekend? 2. What “does” she and her family do on the weekend?

This car doesn’t go fast . Explaine me why doesn’t

This car = singular thing (it).

Also when I have to use ” done” ?

Done is the past participle of do. We use with passive, present perfect and past perfect!

hi, ms ronnie. I have a question, when we can use : “Are and do” in a question ?

Are + adjectives. Are you hungry? Do + verb. Do you like pizza?

but how about in a profession, why in “profession” have to uses are, e.g . are you a nurse ?

Profession we use to be. I am a nurse. ( I to be a nurse) You cannot say I nurse , as nurse in this case is a verb.

nice presentation, i have one doubt. In presentense ” it + does & doesn’t ” ok . so past tense how it would be come inti picture ? i am eager to wait for ypur reply.

Hello Ronnie, I wanted to know that when do we use “does not” and when do we use “doesn’t” and also reason behind that and also about other such words for example:”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t” and etc etc. I also wanted to know meanings of words such as “preety” much impossible..I’l “figure it out” and other such words used in english conversation. I hope that you’ll do lessons for me on these topics.. And I also hope that you’ll reply me as soon as possible..

' src=

Doesn’t = does ….they are the same. As well, haven’t ”have not, haven’t”,”did not, didn’t”. The only difference is that we use the shortened more and save the longer ones (have not) to make our point stronger. Preety is not a word. Pretty??? Pretty means beautiful and very.

hi,miss i don’t understand the use of do,does and doesn’t. what will come with ‘it’do or does.plz explain.thanx

' src=

thank so much i like this lesson and it is very nice lesson and helping me alot

I’m so poor in grammar . Why he didn’t text me or Why didn’t he text me . which one is correct ?

i always got a perfect score on your quiz but why is that im struggling to speak my English up?

' src=

congretulations ,I love your explain :) Do you are a english teacher?

Ohh.. Thanks for replying.. 1 more thing I wanted to know. We drink water from a bottle in two ways, 1.Without touching mouth as in holding it upwards and drinking. 2.By touching lips n mouth to bottle and drinking just like small children’s do. what can we say to tell a person that we have touched our mouth??? I hope u understood my question as I’m not able to explain it properly..

I am not too sure what you mean but…. babies suck on a bottle. If i drink from a bottle I put my lips on it – we don’t have a special word for this! To tell someone, I would just say my lips touched the bottle.

Very friendly explanation rather than Inglo-link.:)

May I know the difference between INTO & ONTO?

Into = inside Onto = on top

Can u explain the difference in use between do and did? For example “I don’t have friends” vs “I didn’t have friends”. Tx

Do = present tense Did = past tense. Watch the video again!

Yes you understood.. Thanks..

Hi Ronnie, I must tell you that I fine tuned my English fundamentals through your videos. It would be great if you can share a video on Will/Would/can/Could with have and haven’ts. Please

Search the site for “Will/Would/can/Could” there are lessons there for you!

“What does he do in the afternoon?” It is right?..Why do I have to use “do” in this question, I am really confuse. Can you explain this to me? Thanks!

If you just say what does he in the afternoon – it makes no sense! What does he eat/drink/say in the afternoon – you need a verb in the sentence!

Hi,can i use didn’t saw in a sentence or didn’t see is the correct one?

Didn’t see. Didn’t is past tense so you don’t need 2 past tense verbs!!!

thank you so much Ronnie thank you kindly you are good teacher your studint in kurdistan

Dear Ronnie,

Per you, Answer for the below quiz is “doesn’t”.. I wonder that why can’t we use “does” too?

She ________ like him, because he is very mean to her. do does doesn’t

' src=

Why would you like someone if they are very mean to you??

I just want to ask if this sentence is grammatically wrong.>>>> (I didn’t want to ask.)<<<< Is it grammatically correct? Why or why isn't it right? Thanks and more power to your site^^

Search the site for “tenses”.

thanks alot i have a question.whn do e use WOULD? thanks in advance

Search the site for “Would”.

Hello! Teacher Ronnie. I’m from Brazil. I would like know about the between differences “like and as” in other words, when can I to use like and as, ie, which situations? thank you so much and congratulations for the lessons!!

' src=

LIKE The structure of the sentence is usually: VERB + LIKE + NOUN / PRONOUN. He speaks like a native speaker. She looks like a supermodel. AS The structure of the sentence is usually: AS + SUBJECT + VERB. Nobody sings as she does. They went to the party as they were. It is very common in American English to use LIKE instead of AS. However, it is generally considered informal to use it in this way.

We play football like champions do.

hi mam ronie i want to ask about somehow, anyhow, weither, either, how to use them in a conversation? hope you can help me thanks.

Look the words up in a dictionary…there will be example sentences for you there!

Hello,madam ronnie.

I have one question here. I saw the one shampoo product, the information wrote is “Did you know?Damaged hair is more prone to falling.” why is did but not do?i’m very confused about it.Hope you can help, thank you:)

You are correct……it should be “Do you know”!

Hi Teacher Ronnie, it’s me again! I have one more a question. Ok! The word “HOW” can I to use only at the beginning of sentences?

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Yes, most times we use it at the beginning. How are you? How is your mom? How is the steak? How do I get there? It is the same as the other wh questions = who what when where why + how!

I am fairly impressed with this site, and im glad i found it. I am currently living in Peru and am trying to teach kids some basic English, and one student asked me to talk about did and that, so this is great. Also, and just curious why was “it” excluded, like it did or it didn’t?

I am allergic to “it”! Ahahah just kidding… I forgot “it”!

thank you very much teacher Ronnie Do you is BRILLIANT!!

I like the way you are teaching and it is really help me to improve. Could you please provide me the difference between present/past & future with examples. I would really appreciate if you can reply me. thanks

Thank you …

/Does/always must be use He and She?

Yes, in the present tense.

Hi teacher! I just learn English grammar in Cambodia, but I don’t understand how to use HAVE and GET. I hearing you.God bless.

I want to clarify , if i want to say.. that place doesn’t have a soul or crowd attraction. Is that correct? I am confused for the usage of Doesn’t have.

And usage of did ..like.. he didn’t do this correctly. eg. with did we use.. present tense…

Thank you …

' src=

Hi Ronnie you are a good teacher however i am confused with this sentence.( what does he do in the afternoon ) please explain the use of do does and did with it and which form of verb should be there ….also want to check with you do we use does with singular and do with plurals.

what will we use with (IT)

if i didn’t know that ben doesn’t /don’t like vanilla cakes ???? answer

thank you so much ronnie.. :):)

Which one of the following sentences is correct? 1) Do John and Sally want to go? 2) Does John and sally want to go?

What do you think is correct?

I think ‘Do’ because John and sally are more than one person. Am I right ma’am?

I think correct is #1

' src=

I miss word “IT” in the video. There is used “does”.

Where should we use done in a sentences.

hi teacher .. I want ask for you what is difference between (wh + be and wh + do) When we use( verb to be .verb to do ) with the question . thanks for you

' src=

Be + adjective/noun. Where is he? Are you hungry? Do + verb. What does he like? Who does she like?

In understanding test, one of the question I choose ‘does’ and the answer is wrong and the right answer is stated below:

She doesn’t like him, because he is very mean to her.

I confused because it seem have a contradiction. Someone does not like somebody because it very mean? Perhaps you can explain more.

Mean = not nice. If someone is mean to you, they are not nice to you so you don’t like that person!

I’d like to ask about “Do & Does”. How to use “Do & Does” with subject OUR? Thanks

With (our) you must use a noun, so it will depend if the noun is singular or plural! Singular noun use does. Our brother does his homework. Plural noun use do. Our parents do the taxes.

Thanks for reply

If asking a question? For example, How does/do our service? Use DO or Does?

i’m confused with this form “let god do the rest” i’m often hear this one. my question is why “God” use “do” why not use “does”? looking forward for your answer :)

' src=

Dear professor: I want to know when we must use the auxiliary do-does in the interrogative form, with the verbs to have and toe.

We use do/does with a regular verb. Do you like pizza? Does he have a job?

With a modal verb or to be verb, we do not use do/does! Are you sick? Is he funny? Should we go now?

I want to know what can we use with the subjective IT, DO/ Does, Because some teachers teach” we use does with 3rd person singular means he, she, it and any single noun.. Please strive to reform me..

This question will help lots of people. Is it a rule not to use plural after DO/DOES/DID? Example: He doesn’t LIKE. They don’t LIKE. He knows -> He doesn’t KNOW.

Thank you very much. Its really helpful.

i have some sentences which is always make me confused. here they are

1. let GOD DO the rest 2.i’m looking in the mirror all the time. wondering what SHE DON’Tsee me

look at the capslock pieces of the sentences. they both use “do” for the subjects “god” and “she”.

i know those sentences right because i found them from english-native but i don’t know what makes them right. i wish you read this comment Ronnie and get to answer my question. lots of thanks our beloved teacher :)

hello teacher! are(do, does, did)auxilary verbs? if not, what are they?

I was told it’s not correct to say “i think he’s not a good man” is it true? and i was suggested to say “i don’t think he’s a good man”! any one can tell me? thank in advance!!!!

Amazing lesson but i have one doubt about that yet .. What can i use about personal names? Examples: Carlos will does your homework or Carlos will do your homework? Melinda doesnt like him or Melinda dont like him?

Thanks in advance..

Carlos and Melinda = he and she! So, you would use Carlos will do (you always use a base verb after will), and Melinda doesn’t like!

its so easy

When we have a common sentence such as : “mike runs every morning” and we use it to make it a question, the subject (mike) shall be deleted form the question? e.g He run every morning? Or can we write: “Mike does run in the morning? I’m from Mexico by the way. Thanks for your help guys!

The question form is “Does Mike (or he) run in the morning? Do/does + subject + base verb!

If so, is there a way to send it to you through your email add? Please let me know. I really appreciate your kindness. Have a good one.

plz learn me… em too weak in english

my parents does not allow party is correct or my parents dont allow party which is correct mam plz tell

My parents are plural so you have to use do not! My parents do not allow SUBJECT to have a party. OR My parents do not allow subject to party.

Good morning to all of you. I have some confusions with DO NOT and NOT TO. I do not know when I have to use DO NOT and when I have to use NOT TO

Do not + verb. Do not go. Do not see. These are commands. I was told not to go…she said not to eat. We use these in reported speech.

THANK YOU ON HELP ME

do not look. and do not see

are they both correct?

Hi. I just want to ask if this sentence is correct, “Upon triggering the switch, magnetic contactor did not activate.”

“ the magnetic contactor” sounds better, I think.

if the subject is ‘You’ then what will come for negative past tense…..

do you say: she doesn´t love Peter or She doesn´t loves Peter

She doesn’t love Peter. (don’t change the verb)

why is “I told her not to drive” insted of “I told her don´t drive”

Told makes it reported speech. So….don’t+ base verb, changes to NOT TO + base verb!

hello Ronnie!am PEDRO learning in jewish family School,at Buffalo NEW YORK.you taucht about of do,does don’t doesn’t,u just used i,you ,he, she, they ,we. now about (it ?)i need your reply

Ronnie you are the best teacher ever. I’m from Guatemala from the Castillo family the family of the Cerveceria de Guatemala look it in google hahaha sorry thanks !!!!

I like your way of teaching

my friend sad “He do that sometimes”

is this correct ??

No! He DOES that sometimes is correct! Now, you can correct your friend!

Thank you so much

I can’t understand when DO uses in positive sentenses like “He does need help” instead “He needs help”. What is the difference?

“He needs help” is a regular sentence. “He does need help” we use to emphasize (make stronger/clearer) the fact. We can use it if the listener did not understand the answer. Ex…. A)Does he need help? B)Yes, he needs help. A)What? I didn’t hear you. B)I said, He DOES need help!

Hi Ronnie! Here’s one very interesting question I guess! But I really need you to answer me, please!!!!! I noticed that Americans use “don’t” with it and he very often!!! in spoken English, even in the songs! For example: … and even forever don’t seem like long enough … or he don’t know what to do!!! Thus the question is: how often do you use it in your life and maybe you have some kinda rules in your spoken language when you can use it or not? Or maybe it just happens automatically when somebody speak and doesn’t depend on any “spoken rules”. Thank you and I’m very looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards!

I passed the exam.

Mr. Rajkumar, “don’t” and “doesn’t are both negative in the sentence. The difference is the first sentence is first person singular, and second is third person singular.

Harsha, both sentence are correct. “Has” is the third person singular of the present tense “have”. In the first sentence “does have” means you want to emphasize something.

Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Do – Does – Did – Done

DO – DOES – DID – DONE

The word  DO  appears a lot in English.

This is because it can be a verb, as in the verb  TO DO  which can be conjugated as Do and Does in the present tense, Did in the past tense and Done as a past participle.

DO can also be an  AUXILIARY  verb in the form of Do / Does to make questions in the present tense and Did to make questions in the past tense.

Let’s look at each one in more detail. We will start with the verb TO DO.

As we have seen, the verb  TO DO  has four forms: Do / Does / Did and Done Lets look at its form in the simple present tense.

TO DO – Present Tense

With the verb TO DO in the Present Tense… We say: I do / you do / we do / they do But we say: he does / she does / it does

Let’s look at some example sentences:

  • I  do  my laundry on Saturdays.

(Do my laundry means I wash my clothes, well, I put in the washing machine)

  • They  do  their chores when they arrive home.

(Chores is the housework you need to do like washing the dishes, doing the vacuuming, etc.)

  • He  does  nothing all day. (That’s right… he is quite lazy, he does absolutely nothing.)
  • She  does charity work when she has time. (People that do charity work are superheroes)

TO DO – Past Tense

The simple past tense of DO is  DID  for all subjects: I did / you did / we did / they did / he did / she did / it did Notice how there is only one form of the verb in the past tense…. DID .

  • He  did  a magic trick. (Yes, and everyone was amazed… wooow!)
  • The baby  did  a fart. (Yes, and the smell made everyone cry. How can such a cute thing produce something so rotten.)
  • I  did  my homework in record time. (Yes, it only took me 5 hours instead of 10)
  • She did ballet after school last year. (This year she is doing something different)

TO DO – Past Participle

The past participle of DO is  DONE . Remember that past participles are accompanied by a conjugation of the verb  TO HAVE  or  TO BE  (which means it is in the correct tense according to the subject)

In general Have + past participle is used with a perfect tense and BE + past participle is with the passive voice . Let’s look at some examples:

  • I have  done  my homework.
  • He has  done  a good job.

These two sentences are in the present perfect tense because they have have or has before the past participle done .

  • The video will show you how it is  done .
  • The report was  done  on time.

Here we used a conjugation of the verb To Be before the past participle done .

TO DO – To replace a verb

We sometimes use the verb  DO  to  replace a verb when the meaning is clear  or obvious. This replacement is more common in informal spoken English:

  • Have you  done  the dishes yet?

(Here done means washed )

  • I’ll  do  the kitchen if you  do  the lawns

(The first do means clean – The second do means mow )

Sometimes Do , Does , and Did are used as auxiliaries to make questions in English.

Let’s start with DO and DOES:

DO / DOES – For Questions

To make a question in the simple present tense in English we normally put the auxiliary Do or Does at the beginning of the question before the subject. After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive without TO at the beginning. Look at this affirmative sentence:

  • You speak English.

How can we make this a question? We add DO at the beginning so it becomes:

  • Do  you speak English?

You will see that we add  DO  at the beginning when the subject is  I ,  you ,  we  or  they .

But look at this affirmative sentence:

  • He speaks Arabic.

To make this a question we say:

  • Does  he speak Arabic?

You can see that we add  DOES  at the beginning when the subject is  he ,  she or  it .

Notice how the letter  S  at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. That is because the verb is in the base form of the infinitive.

NOTE: We  DON’T  use  Do  or  Does  in questions that have the verb  To Be  or  Modal Verbs  (can, must, might, should etc.)

DID – For Questions

Let’s look at the auxiliary DID.

To make a question in the Simple Past Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary DID at the beginning of the question before the subject. And just like in the present tense, After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive with TO at the beginning. Look at this affirmative sentence:

  • You lived in Spain.

How can we make this a question? We add DID at the beginning so it becomes:

  • Did  you live in Spain?

We use the verb form Live and NOT lived because the auxiliary DID show that the question is in the past tense.

Did is also used with He, She and It. So with this affirmative sentence:

  • She lived in Japan.

To make it a question in the past tense we say:

  • Did she live in Japan?

Again we use DID for questions in the past EXCEPT with To Be  and  Modal Verbs  such as  Can . Compare these questions:

  • Do you speak English?
  • Did you speak English?

The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense is the first part… DO or DID. And look at these two questions

  • Does he speak Italian?
  • Did he speak Italian?

The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense when it refers to third person (he, she, or it) is the first part… DOES or DID.

Auxiliary and Verb together

Look at this question:

  • Do you do exercises every day?

Why are there two DOs in this question? The first DO is necessary because we are making a question in the simple present tense. The second DO is from the verb TO DO. You DO exercises.

What happens if instead of YOU we are asking about another person?

  • Does she do exercises every day?

We use DOES because it is necessary for simple present tense questions for third person, in this case for SHE. Does she….? Again DO appears because you DO exercises. It appears as DO and not DOES because the verb needs to be in the base form of the infinitive.

Of course in the past tense you would say:

  • Did you do exercises yesterday?

Did is an auxiliary which is needed to make a question. Do is from the verb To Do.

DO and DOES – For Emphasis

Sometimes  Do / Does / Did  are used in  positive sentences  to give special  emphasis that what you say is true, despite what the other person thinks. Note that when speaking, the word ( do/does/did ) is stressed.

  • I  do  want to go. (We put stress on the word  DO  to emphasize that we really want to go, even if you think it is not true.)
  • I  did  study for the test. (Contrary to what you may believe… yes, I studied)

Notice that  Did  is used for positive sentences in the past tense and that the main verb is in its base form.

  • Yes, he  does  like broccoli. (You may be surprised but yes, he likes broccoli)
  • You  do  need tickets for the event. (I am emphasizing that fact that tickets ARE needed despite what you think.)

Did vs. Done: Difference Explained (Helpful Examples)

The past tense is one of the hardest things to wrap your head around with English. It comes with so many rules and structures, and each verb requires different past tense forms. This article will explore the past tense of “did” and how you can understand what form works when.

Did or Done: Which Is Correct?

“Did” is correct when using the simple past tense to show that something started happening and finished happening in the past. “Done” is the past participle of “do,” which we use with auxiliary verbs to mean that something could happen based on the tense we work with.

Did or done - Which is correct?

Naturally, the simple past tense, “did,” is much easier to understand. These two examples will show you the key differences between both forms:

  • I did my homework before I even made it home!
  • I have done everything that you’ve asked of me.

“Did” requires no extra language rules. We write it to show that something is already done.

Auxiliary verbs are incredibly important when using the past participle. We need “have” and “done” in the same sentence in the second example because that’s how we create the present perfect tense to show that something has started happening in the past and continues in the present.

Past
Past Participle

When Is “Did” Correct?

Let’s start by exploring both forms slightly more. This will help you to understand them and how they work.

“Did” is correct as the simple past tense. When we want to refer to a thing that we did in the past, we can use “did” with whatever pronoun or object that “did” it.

“Did” is easy to use, and if all past tense forms followed the same simplistic rules, English would be a much easier language to learn. There are no extra forms or verbs that we might need to get this one right.

Example Sentences Using “Did”

The following examples will help you to see how “did” works best.

  • I did everything that you asked of me, and now I’m doing my own thing.
  • I did it! I can’t believe I finally did it!
  • She did it with me, and now she’s gone home.
  • We did it together, which made our victory all the sweeter.
  • They did this, didn’t they! I’ll have their heads for this.
  • You did what? I can’t believe you did those foolish things.

“Did” works when someone has done something in the past, and there’s nothing we can do in the present to change the outcome of whatever happened.

When Is “Done” Correct?

“Done” requires a little more thought. It’s not as simple as “did”, and it comes with certain rules that must be followed to make sure we get the form correct.

“Done” is the past participle of “to do.” On its own, it doesn’t work. It requires an auxiliary verb like “have,” which changes it into the present perfect tense. We can use the past, present, or future perfect tenses depending on the auxiliary that we use with it.

Each perfect tense has a different set of rules that it follows, and they usually mean that something has started happening or will start happening, based on something in the present.

The three forms are:

  • Past perfect: Had done
  • Present perfect: Have done
  • Future perfect: Will have done

It’s not often you’ll come across the past perfect tense, but when you do, you’ll need to know what it means. We use it to show that something has happened in the past, but there might still be something we can do to affect it in the future.

The present perfect tense is much more common, and it refers to doing something in the past and finishing or completing that thing in the present.

The future perfect uses “will” and “have” as auxiliary verbs, and we use them to talk about a situation that might occur in the future based on the choices we make in the present.

Example sentences using “Done”

Some examples will help you to understand the phrase, but we’ll split it into each perfect tense to make them easier for you to understand.

Past Perfect

  • I had done everything I needed to do, so I made the mistake of going home early.
  • I had done what I was told, but apparently, that wasn’t enough for my boss.

“Had done” is the past perfect tense. We use it to talk about something we did in the past, and there is some effect or impact that we’re carrying with us in the present.

Present Perfect

  • I have done the chores you asked of me! Can I go now
  • I have done the tasks you needed from me, and I’ve put them on your desk.

“Have done” is the present perfect tense. It refers to something we started doing in the past, but we might have finished doing them at that moment in the present, or we might still be doing them going into the future.

Future Perfect

  • I will have done everything on my agenda before Tuesday if I play my cards right.
  • I will have done too many things this week if I’m not careful.

“Will have” is the future perfect tense. We use this to set up hypothetical future scenarios that might occur based on our actions in the present. It’s up to us if we then want to change those actions or keep them up.

“Have Did” Vs. “Have Done”

Now that we’ve covered everything that’s important about the differences, this section should be easy.

“Have done” is correct because we need the auxiliary “have” with the past participle “done.” “Have did” is never correct because the simple past tense “did” doesn’t require an auxiliary verb like “have” to make sense.

  • Correct: I have done my homework.
  • Incorrect: I have did my homework.

Final Thoughts

We use “did” as the simple past tense of “done” to say that something happened in the past. “Done” is the perfect tense, which is much more difficult to understand. However, once you understand auxiliary verbs like “have”, “done” becomes much easier to work with.

"Did you do it?" vs "Have you done it?"?

If someone did something that made me mad, which is correct to say:

  • Did you do it?
  • have you done it?

If not, what is the proper situation for saying Did you do it?

  • present-perfect
  • simple-past

anongoodnurse's user avatar

  • Why did you do it is a fine way to ask about an event done in the past. Why have you done it implies there are consequences in the present still. Did you do it asks: are you the person who did this/that? –  anongoodnurse Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 4:04
  • if there's consequences on me is it correct to say that to rebuke him? –  user37421 Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 4:08
  • Why did you do it is often good enough. Why have you done it would be appropriate for something that is going to or is still harming someone, for example, someone is going to lose a job or a friendship over it. –  anongoodnurse Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 4:12
  • can I use "have you done it?" to rebuke somebody? –  user37421 Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 4:16
  • If you already know who has done it, no. It gives the person the opportunity to say, no. If he has done it, a more proper rebuke would be to ask why he has done it. –  anongoodnurse Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 4:19

“Have you done it?” is the question to ask if you want to know:

  • whether a task is finished, or
  • whether they have experience with some task.

For example, if you want to know whether a report is done, or whether somebody has gone sky diving before, you can ask, “Have you done it?” In the first case, you could also ask, “Have you done it yet?” In the latter, “Have you done it before?”

“Did you do it?” is the question you want to ask to find out who did something. You can also use it to ask whether a task is finished, although the emphasis is different:

Did you do it? Did you do it?

Bradd Szonye's user avatar

  • 1 +1, but there is considerable room for flexibility here. 'Have you ever done it' can be a way of asking if someone has ever borrowed the keys to the wine cellar and helped themselves. –  WS2 Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 6:42
  • Good point, @WS2! I wouldn't use it that way for a recent occurrence though. –  Bradd Szonye Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 8:49

If you already know someone did something to make you mad, you wouldn't ask if they had done it. You might question WHY they did it though:

"Why'd you do it?"

However, if you are uncertain, then:

"Did you do it?"

would be correct.

did it homework

How to use did, was, were and does correctly?

Words such as "did", "was", "were", and "does" that frequently appear in learning English. Although it is a word learned in junior high school, many people use "did" in the past, and it seems that there are surprisingly many people who are uncertain about how to use it properly. So, this time, I would like to introduce how to use these four words properly, along with sentences that frequently appear in English conversation.

  • Use Did and Was / Were properly

Use did and does properly

Different use of did and was / were.

Have you made the following mistakes while speaking in online English conversation?

"Did you go to school yesterday?" × Were you go to school yesterday?

The original correct text is below.

â—‹ Did you go to school yesterday? (Did you go to school yesterday?)

So why is "did" correct instead of "were"?

In the first place, the sentence "Did you go to school yesterday?" Is an interrogative form of the sentence "You went to school yesterday."

You went to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.)

This went is the past tense of the general verb "go". General verbs are verbs other than the be verb. When making a question sentence of a sentence containing such a past tense general verb, Did is added to the beginning of the sentence, and went remains changed to the original form "go".

You went to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.) ↓ Did you go to school yesterday. (You went to school yesterday.)

On the other hand, how about the following sentences?

"Did you in the school at that time?" × Did you in the school at that time?

Were you in the school at that time?

The sentence "Are you at school at that time?" Is a question of the sentence "You were at school at that time" in the first place.

You were in the school at that time.

In this sentence, the verb is not a general verb, but a be verb, which is the past tense of are. In the interrogative sentence of the sentence including the be verb, the be verb moves to the beginning of the sentence as it is.

You were in the school at that time. (At that time, you were at school.) ↓ Were you in the school at that time. (At that time, you were at school.)

Of course, the past tense of the be verb is not only were, but also was. For example,

He was in the school at that time. (He was in the school at that time.)

In the question sentence of the sentence, the be verb was moved to the beginning of the sentence,

He was in the school at that time. (He was in the school at that time?) ↓ Was he in the school at that time?

It will be.

<Summary> 1. In past interrogative sentences of general verbs, Did is used at the beginning of the sentence. In past interrogative sentences of the be verb, Were or Was is used at the beginning of the sentence.

Did, Was / Were example sentences

Based on the previous explanation, let's look at some of the example sentences that can be used in online English conversation.

Patterns that use Did

You liked the ice cream. (You liked the ice cream.) ↓ Did you like the ice cream? (Did you like the ice cream?)
You bought new shoes. (You bought new shoes.) ↓ Did you buy new shoes? (Did you buy new shoes?)
You wrote a letter to your mom. ↓ Did you write a letter to your mom? (Did you write a letter to your mom?)

Patterns that use Were

You were sick last week. (You were sick last week.) ↓ Were you sick last week? (Did you get sick last week?)
You were sad when you saw it. (You were sad when you saw it.) ↓ Were you sad when you saw it?
They were there last summer. (They were there last summer.) ↓ Were they there last summer? (Did they stay there last summer?)

Pattern using Was

He was at home yesterday. (He was at home yesterday.) ↓ Was he at home yesterday? (Did he stay at home yesterday?)
She was with Tom last Friday. (She was with Tom last Friday.) ↓ Was she with Tom last Friday? (She was with Tom this Friday?)
I was wrong. (I was wrong.) ↓ Was I wrong? (I was wrong?)

Next, let's look at the difference between did and does. When speaking in English, I often hear that the place where does should be used is did, and vice versa.

First of all, there are two main situations where you often see did and does.

The first is when the general verb "do" changes, "do" and "do", and the other is when it is used as an "auxiliary verb" in the head of an interrogative sentence. Let's explain these two patterns separately.

Variations of the general verb "do" "did" "does"

First of all, "did", but suppose you have the following sentence.

I do homework. (I do my homework)
You do the washing.
They do the dishes.

In the example sentence above, "do" acts as the verb "do". "Did" appears when the general verb "to" is transformed into the past tense of "to".

I did homework. (I did my homework.)
You did the washing.
They did the dishes.

On the other hand, "does" is the present tense, and when the subject is a pronoun such as "he", "she", or "it" or a proper noun, the third person of do (third person, singular, present tense). "Does" is used.

She does homework.
He does the washing.
Tom does the dishes.

<Summary> 1. In the past tense of the general verb "do", "did" is used. If the subject is the third person singular and present tense, "do" changes to "does"

"Did" and "does" used at the beginning of an interrogative sentence

"Did" and "does" also appear at the beginning of an interrogative sentence. At this time, "did" and "does" are not verbs, but auxiliary verbs, and work to indicate that they are interrogative sentences.

First of all, "did" is used for "past" interrogative sentences as shown below.

Did you go to school yesterday? (Did you go to school yesterday?)
Did he talk to you last Friday? (Did he talk to you last Tuesday?)
Did she like your present?

The fact that "Did" is in your head tells you that it is a past question.

On the other hand, "does" is used when the subject is the current interrogative and the subject is the third person singular such as "she", "he", "it".

Does he usually go to school by bus?
Does she enjoy her job?
Does Emily often cook?

As mentioned above, in the current interrogative form, "Does" is used if the subject is the third person singular. This doesn't come out at first, and you might just say "Do she" or "Do he". Let's memorize the part drawn in red as a set by saying "Does he" and "Does she" many times.

<Summary> 1. "Did" is used at the beginning of past tense interrogative sentences . "Does" is a present tense interrogative, used when the subject is the third person singular

"Did," "was," "were," "does," etc. are words that are often used in English conversation. I think there are many people who say the wrong word in the sentence. By speaking the correct example sentence introduced this time aloud many times, you will feel a sense of discomfort when "did" becomes "was". Once you understand the difference, please try to speak a lot.

Did You vs. Have You

What's the difference.

"Did you" and "have you" are both interrogative phrases used to ask questions in English. However, they differ in terms of tense and the type of information they seek. "Did you" is used to inquire about past actions or events, while "have you" is used to inquire about present or ongoing actions or states. For example, "Did you go to the store yesterday?" asks about a specific action that occurred in the past, while "Have you finished your homework?" asks about the current status of completing a task.

Further Detail

Introduction.

When it comes to English grammar, understanding the differences between different verb tenses is crucial. Two commonly used verb tenses that often confuse English learners are "Did You" and "Have You." While both verb forms are used to ask questions, they have distinct attributes that set them apart. In this article, we will explore the characteristics of "Did You" and "Have You" to help you gain a better understanding of their usage.

Usage of "Did You"

"Did You" is a past tense verb form that is used to ask questions about completed actions or events. It is commonly used to inquire about someone's past experiences, actions, or habits. For example:

  • Did you go to the party last night?
  • Did you finish your homework?
  • Did you enjoy your vacation?

As seen in the examples, "Did You" is used to ask about specific actions or events that occurred in the past. It is important to note that "Did You" is always followed by the base form of the verb, regardless of the subject. This makes it a straightforward verb form to use when asking questions about the past.

Usage of "Have You"

"Have You" is a present perfect tense verb form that is used to ask questions about past actions or events that have a connection to the present. It is commonly used to inquire about someone's experiences, actions, or achievements up until now. For example:

  • Have you ever traveled to Europe?
  • Have you finished your work for today?
  • Have you seen the latest movie?

As seen in the examples, "Have You" is used to ask about someone's experiences or actions that have relevance to the present moment. It implies that the action or event happened at an unspecified time before now. The use of "Have You" indicates that the action or event may have occurred multiple times or is still ongoing.

Forming Questions with "Did You"

When forming questions with "Did You," the auxiliary verb "did" is used to indicate the past tense, while the main verb remains in its base form. The subject of the sentence comes before the auxiliary verb "did." For example:

  • Did you eat dinner?
  • Did you watch the game?
  • Did you call your friend?

As shown in the examples, the subject "you" is followed by the auxiliary verb "did," and then the base form of the verb. This structure is consistent regardless of the subject, making it easy to construct questions using "Did You."

Forming Questions with "Have You"

When forming questions with "Have You," the auxiliary verb "have" is used to indicate the present perfect tense, while the main verb remains in its base form. The subject of the sentence comes before the auxiliary verb "have." For example:

  • Have you visited the museum?
  • Have you finished your project?
  • Have you read the book?

As demonstrated in the examples, the subject "you" is followed by the auxiliary verb "have," and then the base form of the verb. This structure is consistent regardless of the subject, making it easy to construct questions using "Have You."

Key Differences

While both "Did You" and "Have You" are used to ask questions, there are key differences in their usage:

  • "Did You" is used to ask about specific actions or events that occurred in the past, while "Have You" is used to ask about past actions or events that have a connection to the present.
  • "Did You" is always followed by the base form of the verb, while "Have You" is also followed by the base form of the verb.
  • "Did You" is used to inquire about completed actions or events, while "Have You" is used to inquire about experiences, actions, or achievements up until now.
  • "Did You" is commonly used to ask about someone's past habits or routines, while "Have You" is used to ask about someone's experiences or actions that have relevance to the present moment.

Understanding the differences between "Did You" and "Have You" is essential for effective communication in English. While "Did You" is used to ask about specific past actions or events, "Have You" is used to ask about past actions or events that have a connection to the present. By grasping the nuances of these verb forms, you can confidently ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations. So, next time you want to inquire about someone's experiences or actions, remember to choose between "Did You" and "Have You" based on the context and time frame you want to refer to.

‘Make homework’ vs. ‘do homework’ in English

did it homework

First, let me note that “homework” is an uncountable (mass) noun in English. It is a common mistake, even among some non-native teachers of English as a foreign language, to say things like, “Hand in your homeworks, please.” The word “homework”, being uncountable, does not have a plural form. If you really must refer to several separate “pieces” of homework, the word you are looking for is “assignment”:

It is also not possible to use “homework” with “a”:

Let’s move on to the main topic of this article. Without further ado, the correct verb to use with “homework” is “do”, not “make”:

“Homework” is not in any way special in this respect. We always use “do” with activities and “make” with objects that are being made. Just like we “do work”, not “make work”, we also “do homework”, meaning the activity.

The confusion arises from the fact that the most direct translation of “homework” into other languages often refers to the sheets of paper on which the assignments are written, hence it would make sense to “make it”. For the very same reason, we wouldn’t usually speak about “writing homework”:

Difference between DID and HAVE

by Hari (India)

I have a confusion regarding using DID and HAVE. For example: "Did you finish your homework?" (Positive sentence: "You finished your homework.") Vs. "Have you finished your homework?" (Positive sentence: "You have finished your homework.") Some of my friends told that both are same. Some others said both are different. Can you clarify this doubt? Thank you. Regards., R.Harikumar. Answer: You are not alone in this doubt. :) Many find this issue confusing. I'll try to make it clearer: "I ate an apple," simply means you ate an apple in the past. "I have eaten an apple," basically means the same thing. The difference is that here you emphasize the fact that NOW the action is complete. This is why this tense is called the present perfect – it tells us that the action is now complete. Here is another example: "They sold the house." This sentence means they sold the house in the past. "They have sold the house." This sentence emphasizes the fact that now the house is sold. For more info visit: Simple Past or Present Perfect?

Does Homework Really Help Students Learn?

A conversation with a Wheelock researcher, a BU student, and a fourth-grade teacher

child doing homework

“Quality homework is engaging and relevant to kids’ lives,” says Wheelock’s Janine Bempechat. “It gives them autonomy and engages them in the community and with their families. In some subjects, like math, worksheets can be very helpful. It has to do with the value of practicing over and over.” Photo by iStock/Glenn Cook Photography

Do your homework.

If only it were that simple.

Educators have debated the merits of homework since the late 19th century. In recent years, amid concerns of some parents and teachers that children are being stressed out by too much homework, things have only gotten more fraught.

“Homework is complicated,” says developmental psychologist Janine Bempechat, a Wheelock College of Education & Human Development clinical professor. The author of the essay “ The Case for (Quality) Homework—Why It Improves Learning and How Parents Can Help ” in the winter 2019 issue of Education Next , Bempechat has studied how the debate about homework is influencing teacher preparation, parent and student beliefs about learning, and school policies.

She worries especially about socioeconomically disadvantaged students from low-performing schools who, according to research by Bempechat and others, get little or no homework.

BU Today  sat down with Bempechat and Erin Bruce (Wheelock’17,’18), a new fourth-grade teacher at a suburban Boston school, and future teacher freshman Emma Ardizzone (Wheelock) to talk about what quality homework looks like, how it can help children learn, and how schools can equip teachers to design it, evaluate it, and facilitate parents’ role in it.

BU Today: Parents and educators who are against homework in elementary school say there is no research definitively linking it to academic performance for kids in the early grades. You’ve said that they’re missing the point.

Bempechat : I think teachers assign homework in elementary school as a way to help kids develop skills they’ll need when they’re older—to begin to instill a sense of responsibility and to learn planning and organizational skills. That’s what I think is the greatest value of homework—in cultivating beliefs about learning and skills associated with academic success. If we greatly reduce or eliminate homework in elementary school, we deprive kids and parents of opportunities to instill these important learning habits and skills.

We do know that beginning in late middle school, and continuing through high school, there is a strong and positive correlation between homework completion and academic success.

That’s what I think is the greatest value of homework—in cultivating beliefs about learning and skills associated with academic success.

You talk about the importance of quality homework. What is that?

Quality homework is engaging and relevant to kids’ lives. It gives them autonomy and engages them in the community and with their families. In some subjects, like math, worksheets can be very helpful. It has to do with the value of practicing over and over.

Janine Bempechat

What are your concerns about homework and low-income children?

The argument that some people make—that homework “punishes the poor” because lower-income parents may not be as well-equipped as affluent parents to help their children with homework—is very troubling to me. There are no parents who don’t care about their children’s learning. Parents don’t actually have to help with homework completion in order for kids to do well. They can help in other ways—by helping children organize a study space, providing snacks, being there as a support, helping children work in groups with siblings or friends.

Isn’t the discussion about getting rid of homework happening mostly in affluent communities?

Yes, and the stories we hear of kids being stressed out from too much homework—four or five hours of homework a night—are real. That’s problematic for physical and mental health and overall well-being. But the research shows that higher-income students get a lot more homework than lower-income kids.

Teachers may not have as high expectations for lower-income children. Schools should bear responsibility for providing supports for kids to be able to get their homework done—after-school clubs, community support, peer group support. It does kids a disservice when our expectations are lower for them.

The conversation around homework is to some extent a social class and social justice issue. If we eliminate homework for all children because affluent children have too much, we’re really doing a disservice to low-income children. They need the challenge, and every student can rise to the challenge with enough supports in place.

What did you learn by studying how education schools are preparing future teachers to handle homework?

My colleague, Margarita Jimenez-Silva, at the University of California, Davis, School of Education, and I interviewed faculty members at education schools, as well as supervising teachers, to find out how students are being prepared. And it seemed that they weren’t. There didn’t seem to be any readings on the research, or conversations on what high-quality homework is and how to design it.

Erin, what kind of training did you get in handling homework?

Bruce : I had phenomenal professors at Wheelock, but homework just didn’t come up. I did lots of student teaching. I’ve been in classrooms where the teachers didn’t assign any homework, and I’ve been in rooms where they assigned hours of homework a night. But I never even considered homework as something that was my decision. I just thought it was something I’d pull out of a book and it’d be done.

I started giving homework on the first night of school this year. My first assignment was to go home and draw a picture of the room where you do your homework. I want to know if it’s at a table and if there are chairs around it and if mom’s cooking dinner while you’re doing homework.

The second night I asked them to talk to a grown-up about how are you going to be able to get your homework done during the week. The kids really enjoyed it. There’s a running joke that I’m teaching life skills.

Friday nights, I read all my kids’ responses to me on their homework from the week and it’s wonderful. They pour their hearts out. It’s like we’re having a conversation on my couch Friday night.

It matters to know that the teacher cares about you and that what you think matters to the teacher. Homework is a vehicle to connect home and school…for parents to know teachers are welcoming to them and their families.

Bempechat : I can’t imagine that most new teachers would have the intuition Erin had in designing homework the way she did.

Ardizzone : Conversations with kids about homework, feeling you’re being listened to—that’s such a big part of wanting to do homework….I grew up in Westchester County. It was a pretty demanding school district. My junior year English teacher—I loved her—she would give us feedback, have meetings with all of us. She’d say, “If you have any questions, if you have anything you want to talk about, you can talk to me, here are my office hours.” It felt like she actually cared.

Bempechat : It matters to know that the teacher cares about you and that what you think matters to the teacher. Homework is a vehicle to connect home and school…for parents to know teachers are welcoming to them and their families.

Ardizzone : But can’t it lead to parents being overbearing and too involved in their children’s lives as students?

Bempechat : There’s good help and there’s bad help. The bad help is what you’re describing—when parents hover inappropriately, when they micromanage, when they see their children confused and struggling and tell them what to do.

Good help is when parents recognize there’s a struggle going on and instead ask informative questions: “Where do you think you went wrong?” They give hints, or pointers, rather than saying, “You missed this,” or “You didn’t read that.”

Bruce : I hope something comes of this. I hope BU or Wheelock can think of some way to make this a more pressing issue. As a first-year teacher, it was not something I even thought about on the first day of school—until a kid raised his hand and said, “Do we have homework?” It would have been wonderful if I’d had a plan from day one.

Insightful! The values about homework in elementary schools are well aligned with my intuition as a parent.

when i finish my work i do my homework and i sometimes forget what to do because i did not get enough sleep

same omg it does not help me it is stressful and if I have it in more than one class I hate it.

Same I think my parent wants to help me but, she doesn’t care if I get bad grades so I just try my best and my grades are great.

I think that last question about Good help from parents is not know to all parents, we do as our parents did or how we best think it can be done, so maybe coaching parents or giving them resources on how to help with homework would be very beneficial for the parent on how to help and for the teacher to have consistency and improve homework results, and of course for the child. I do see how homework helps reaffirm the knowledge obtained in the classroom, I also have the ability to see progress and it is a time I share with my kids

The answer to the headline question is a no-brainer – a more pressing problem is why there is a difference in how students from different cultures succeed. Perfect example is the student population at BU – why is there a majority population of Asian students and only about 3% black students at BU? In fact at some universities there are law suits by Asians to stop discrimination and quotas against admitting Asian students because the real truth is that as a group they are demonstrating better qualifications for admittance, while at the same time there are quotas and reduced requirements for black students to boost their portion of the student population because as a group they do more poorly in meeting admissions standards – and it is not about the Benjamins. The real problem is that in our PC society no one has the gazuntas to explore this issue as it may reveal that all people are not created equal after all. Or is it just environmental cultural differences??????

I get you have a concern about the issue but that is not even what the point of this article is about. If you have an issue please take this to the site we have and only post your opinion about the actual topic

This is not at all what the article is talking about.

This literally has nothing to do with the article brought up. You should really take your opinions somewhere else before you speak about something that doesn’t make sense.

we have the same name

so they have the same name what of it?

lol you tell her

totally agree

What does that have to do with homework, that is not what the article talks about AT ALL.

Yes, I think homework plays an important role in the development of student life. Through homework, students have to face challenges on a daily basis and they try to solve them quickly.I am an intense online tutor at 24x7homeworkhelp and I give homework to my students at that level in which they handle it easily.

More than two-thirds of students said they used alcohol and drugs, primarily marijuana, to cope with stress.

You know what’s funny? I got this assignment to write an argument for homework about homework and this article was really helpful and understandable, and I also agree with this article’s point of view.

I also got the same task as you! I was looking for some good resources and I found this! I really found this article useful and easy to understand, just like you! ^^

i think that homework is the best thing that a child can have on the school because it help them with their thinking and memory.

I am a child myself and i think homework is a terrific pass time because i can’t play video games during the week. It also helps me set goals.

Homework is not harmful ,but it will if there is too much

I feel like, from a minors point of view that we shouldn’t get homework. Not only is the homework stressful, but it takes us away from relaxing and being social. For example, me and my friends was supposed to hang at the mall last week but we had to postpone it since we all had some sort of work to do. Our minds shouldn’t be focused on finishing an assignment that in realty, doesn’t matter. I completely understand that we should have homework. I have to write a paper on the unimportance of homework so thanks.

homework isn’t that bad

Are you a student? if not then i don’t really think you know how much and how severe todays homework really is

i am a student and i do not enjoy homework because i practice my sport 4 out of the five days we have school for 4 hours and that’s not even counting the commute time or the fact i still have to shower and eat dinner when i get home. its draining!

i totally agree with you. these people are such boomers

why just why

they do make a really good point, i think that there should be a limit though. hours and hours of homework can be really stressful, and the extra work isn’t making a difference to our learning, but i do believe homework should be optional and extra credit. that would make it for students to not have the leaning stress of a assignment and if you have a low grade you you can catch up.

Studies show that homework improves student achievement in terms of improved grades, test results, and the likelihood to attend college. Research published in the High School Journal indicates that students who spent between 31 and 90 minutes each day on homework “scored about 40 points higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest than their peers, who reported spending no time on homework each day, on average.” On both standardized tests and grades, students in classes that were assigned homework outperformed 69% of students who didn’t have homework. A majority of studies on homework’s impact – 64% in one meta-study and 72% in another – showed that take home assignments were effective at improving academic achievement. Research by the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) concluded that increased homework led to better GPAs and higher probability of college attendance for high school boys. In fact, boys who attended college did more than three hours of additional homework per week in high school.

So how are your measuring student achievement? That’s the real question. The argument that doing homework is simply a tool for teaching responsibility isn’t enough for me. We can teach responsibility in a number of ways. Also the poor argument that parents don’t need to help with homework, and that students can do it on their own, is wishful thinking at best. It completely ignores neurodiverse students. Students in poverty aren’t magically going to find a space to do homework, a friend’s or siblings to help them do it, and snacks to eat. I feel like the author of this piece has never set foot in a classroom of students.

THIS. This article is pathetic coming from a university. So intellectually dishonest, refusing to address the havoc of capitalism and poverty plays on academic success in life. How can they in one sentence use poor kids in an argument and never once address that poor children have access to damn near 0 of the resources affluent kids have? Draw me a picture and let’s talk about feelings lmao what a joke is that gonna put food in their belly so they can have the calories to burn in order to use their brain to study? What about quiet their 7 other siblings that they share a single bedroom with for hours? Is it gonna force the single mom to magically be at home and at work at the same time to cook food while you study and be there to throw an encouraging word?

Also the “parents don’t need to be a parent and be able to guide their kid at all academically they just need to exist in the next room” is wild. Its one thing if a parent straight up is not equipped but to say kids can just figured it out is…. wow coming from an educator What’s next the teacher doesn’t need to teach cause the kid can just follow the packet and figure it out?

Well then get a tutor right? Oh wait you are poor only affluent kids can afford a tutor for their hours of homework a day were they on average have none of the worries a poor child does. Does this address that poor children are more likely to also suffer abuse and mental illness? Like mentioned what about kids that can’t learn or comprehend the forced standardized way? Just let em fail? These children regularly are not in “special education”(some of those are a joke in their own and full of neglect and abuse) programs cause most aren’t even acknowledged as having disabilities or disorders.

But yes all and all those pesky poor kids just aren’t being worked hard enough lol pretty sure poor children’s existence just in childhood is more work, stress, and responsibility alone than an affluent child’s entire life cycle. Love they never once talked about the quality of education in the classroom being so bad between the poor and affluent it can qualify as segregation, just basically blamed poor people for being lazy, good job capitalism for failing us once again!

why the hell?

you should feel bad for saying this, this article can be helpful for people who has to write a essay about it

This is more of a political rant than it is about homework

I know a teacher who has told his students their homework is to find something they are interested in, pursue it and then come share what they learn. The student responses are quite compelling. One girl taught herself German so she could talk to her grandfather. One boy did a research project on Nelson Mandela because the teacher had mentioned him in class. Another boy, a both on the autism spectrum, fixed his family’s computer. The list goes on. This is fourth grade. I think students are highly motivated to learn, when we step aside and encourage them.

The whole point of homework is to give the students a chance to use the material that they have been presented with in class. If they never have the opportunity to use that information, and discover that it is actually useful, it will be in one ear and out the other. As a science teacher, it is critical that the students are challenged to use the material they have been presented with, which gives them the opportunity to actually think about it rather than regurgitate “facts”. Well designed homework forces the student to think conceptually, as opposed to regurgitation, which is never a pretty sight

Wonderful discussion. and yes, homework helps in learning and building skills in students.

not true it just causes kids to stress

Homework can be both beneficial and unuseful, if you will. There are students who are gifted in all subjects in school and ones with disabilities. Why should the students who are gifted get the lucky break, whereas the people who have disabilities suffer? The people who were born with this “gift” go through school with ease whereas people with disabilities struggle with the work given to them. I speak from experience because I am one of those students: the ones with disabilities. Homework doesn’t benefit “us”, it only tears us down and put us in an abyss of confusion and stress and hopelessness because we can’t learn as fast as others. Or we can’t handle the amount of work given whereas the gifted students go through it with ease. It just brings us down and makes us feel lost; because no mater what, it feels like we are destined to fail. It feels like we weren’t “cut out” for success.

homework does help

here is the thing though, if a child is shoved in the face with a whole ton of homework that isn’t really even considered homework it is assignments, it’s not helpful. the teacher should make homework more of a fun learning experience rather than something that is dreaded

This article was wonderful, I am going to ask my teachers about extra, or at all giving homework.

I agree. Especially when you have homework before an exam. Which is distasteful as you’ll need that time to study. It doesn’t make any sense, nor does us doing homework really matters as It’s just facts thrown at us.

Homework is too severe and is just too much for students, schools need to decrease the amount of homework. When teachers assign homework they forget that the students have other classes that give them the same amount of homework each day. Students need to work on social skills and life skills.

I disagree.

Beyond achievement, proponents of homework argue that it can have many other beneficial effects. They claim it can help students develop good study habits so they are ready to grow as their cognitive capacities mature. It can help students recognize that learning can occur at home as well as at school. Homework can foster independent learning and responsible character traits. And it can give parents an opportunity to see what’s going on at school and let them express positive attitudes toward achievement.

Homework is helpful because homework helps us by teaching us how to learn a specific topic.

As a student myself, I can say that I have almost never gotten the full 9 hours of recommended sleep time, because of homework. (Now I’m writing an essay on it in the middle of the night D=)

I am a 10 year old kid doing a report about “Is homework good or bad” for homework before i was going to do homework is bad but the sources from this site changed my mind!

Homeowkr is god for stusenrs

I agree with hunter because homework can be so stressful especially with this whole covid thing no one has time for homework and every one just wants to get back to there normal lives it is especially stressful when you go on a 2 week vaca 3 weeks into the new school year and and then less then a week after you come back from the vaca you are out for over a month because of covid and you have no way to get the assignment done and turned in

As great as homework is said to be in the is article, I feel like the viewpoint of the students was left out. Every where I go on the internet researching about this topic it almost always has interviews from teachers, professors, and the like. However isn’t that a little biased? Of course teachers are going to be for homework, they’re not the ones that have to stay up past midnight completing the homework from not just one class, but all of them. I just feel like this site is one-sided and you should include what the students of today think of spending four hours every night completing 6-8 classes worth of work.

Are we talking about homework or practice? Those are two very different things and can result in different outcomes.

Homework is a graded assignment. I do not know of research showing the benefits of graded assignments going home.

Practice; however, can be extremely beneficial, especially if there is some sort of feedback (not a grade but feedback). That feedback can come from the teacher, another student or even an automated grading program.

As a former band director, I assigned daily practice. I never once thought it would be appropriate for me to require the students to turn in a recording of their practice for me to grade. Instead, I had in-class assignments/assessments that were graded and directly related to the practice assigned.

I would really like to read articles on “homework” that truly distinguish between the two.

oof i feel bad good luck!

thank you guys for the artical because I have to finish an assingment. yes i did cite it but just thanks

thx for the article guys.

Homework is good

I think homework is helpful AND harmful. Sometimes u can’t get sleep bc of homework but it helps u practice for school too so idk.

I agree with this Article. And does anyone know when this was published. I would like to know.

It was published FEb 19, 2019.

Studies have shown that homework improved student achievement in terms of improved grades, test results, and the likelihood to attend college.

i think homework can help kids but at the same time not help kids

This article is so out of touch with majority of homes it would be laughable if it wasn’t so incredibly sad.

There is no value to homework all it does is add stress to already stressed homes. Parents or adults magically having the time or energy to shepherd kids through homework is dome sort of 1950’s fantasy.

What lala land do these teachers live in?

Homework gives noting to the kid

Homework is Bad

homework is bad.

why do kids even have homework?

The History of Homework: Why Was it Invented and Who Was Behind It?

  • By Emily Summers
  • February 14, 2020

Homework is long-standing education staple, one that many students hate with a fiery passion. We can’t really blame them, especially if it’s a primary source of stress that can result in headaches, exhaustion, and lack of sleep.

It’s not uncommon for students, parents, and even some teachers to complain about bringing assignments home. Yet, for millions of children around the world, homework is still a huge part of their daily lives as students — even if it continues to be one of their biggest causes of stress and unrest.

It makes one wonder, who in their right mind would invent such a thing as homework?

Who Invented Homework?

Pliny the younger: when in ancient rome, horace mann: the father of modern homework, the history of homework in america, 1900s: anti-homework sentiment & homework bans, 1930: homework as child labor, early-to-mid 20th century: homework and the progressive era, the cold war: homework starts heating up, 1980s: homework in a nation at risk, early 21 st century, state of homework today: why is it being questioned, should students get homework pros of cons of bringing school work home.

Guy stressed with homework

Online, there are many articles that point to Roberto Nevilis as the first educator to give his students homework. He created it as a way to punish his lazy students and ensure that they fully learned their lessons. However, these pieces of information mostly come from obscure educational blogs or forum websites with questionable claims. No credible news source or website has ever mentioned the name Roberto Nevilis as the person who invented homework . In fact, it’s possible that Nevilis never even existed.

As we’re not entirely sure who to credit for creating the bane of students’ existence and the reasons why homework was invented, we can use a few historical trivia to help narrow down our search.

Mentions of the term “homework” date back to as early as ancient Rome. In I century AD, Pliny the Younger , an oratory teacher, supposedly invented homework by asking his followers to practice public speaking at home. It was to help them become more confident and fluent in their speeches. But some would argue that the assignment wasn’t exactly the type of written work that students have to do at home nowadays. Only introverted individuals with a fear of public speaking would find it difficult and stressful.

It’s also safe to argue that since homework is an integral part of education, it’s probable that it has existed since the dawn of learning, like a beacon of light to all those helpless and lost (or to cast darkness on those who despise it). This means that Romans, Enlightenment philosophers, and Middle Age monks all read, memorized, and sang pieces well before homework was given any definition. It’s harder to play the blame game this way unless you want to point your finger at Horace Mann.

In the 19 th century, Horace Mann , a politician and educational reformer had a strong interest in the compulsory public education system of Germany as a newly unified nation-state. Pupils attending the Volksschulen or “People’s Schools” were given mandatory assignments that they needed to complete at home during their own time. This requirement emphasized the state’s power over individuals at a time when nationalists such as Johann Gottlieb Fichte were rallying support for a unified German state. Basically, the state used homework as an element of power play.

Despite its political origins, the system of bringing school assignments home spread across Europe and eventually found their way to Horace Mann, who was in Prussia at that time. He brought the system home with him to America where homework became a daily activity in the lives of students.

Despite homework being a near-universal part of the American educational experience today, it hasn’t always been universally accepted. Take a look at its turbulent history in America.

In 1901, just a few decades after Horace Mann introduced the concept to Americans, homework was banned in the Pacific state of California . The ban affected students younger than 15 years old and stayed in effect until 1917.

Around the same time, prominent publications such as The New York Times and Ladies’ Home Journal published statements from medical professionals and parents who stated that homework was detrimental to children’s health.

In 1930, the American Child Health Association declared homework as a type of child labor . Since laws against child labor had been passed recently during that time, the proclamation painted homework as unacceptable educational practice, making everyone wonder why homework was invented in the first place.

However, it’s keen to note that one of the reasons why homework was so frowned upon was because children were needed to help out with household chores (a.k.a. a less intensive and more socially acceptable form of child labor).

During the progressive education reforms of the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, educators started looking for ways to make homework assignments more personal and relevant to the interests of individual students. Maybe this was how immortal essay topics such as “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up” and “What I Did During My Summer Vacation” were born.

After World War II, the Cold War heated up rivalries between the U.S. and Russia. Sputnik 1’s launch in 1957 intensified the competition between Americans and Russians – including their youth.

Education authorities in the U.S. decided that implementing rigorous homework to American students of all ages was the best way to ensure that they were always one step ahead of their Russian counterparts, especially in the competitive fields of Math and Science.

In 1986, the U.S. Department of Education’s pamphlet, “What Works,” included homework as one of the effective strategies to boost the quality of education. This came three years after the National Commission on Excellence in Education published “ Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform .” The landmark report lambasted the state of America’s schools, calling for reforms to right the alarming direction that public education was headed.

Today, many educators, students, parents, and other concerned citizens have once again started questioning why homework was invented and if it’s still valuable.

Homework now is facing major backlash around the world. With more than 60% of high school and college students seeking counselling for conditions such as clinical depression and anxiety, all of which are brought about by school, it’s safe to say that American students are more stressed out than they should be.

After sitting through hours at school, they leave only to start on a mountain pile of homework. Not only does it take up a large chunk of time that they can otherwise spend on their hobbies and interests, it also stops them from getting enough sleep. This can lead to students experiencing physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from their peers and society in general.

Is homework important and necessary ? Or is it doing more harm than good? Here some key advantages and disadvantages to consider.

  • It encourages the discipline of practice

Using the same formula or memorizing the same information over and over can be difficult and boring, but it reinforces the practice of discipline. To master a skill, repetition is often needed. By completing homework every night, specifically with difficult subjects, the concepts become easier to understand, helping students polish their skills and achieve their life goals.

  • It teaches students to manage their time

Homework goes beyond just completing tasks. It encourages children to develop their skills in time management as schedules need to be organized to ensure that all tasks can be completed within the day.

  • It provides more time for students to complete their learning process

The time allotted for each subject in school is often limited to 1 hour or less per day. That’s not enough time for students to grasp the material and core concepts of each subject. By creating specific homework assignments, it becomes possible for students to make up for the deficiencies in time.

  • It discourages creative endeavors

If a student spends 3-5 hours a day on homework, those are 3-5 hours that they can’t use to pursue creative passions. Students might like to read leisurely or take up new hobbies but homework takes away their time from painting, learning an instrument, or developing new skills.

  • Homework is typically geared toward benchmarks

Teachers often assign homework to improve students’ test scores. Although this can result in positive outcomes such as better study habits, the fact is that when students feel tired, they won’t likely absorb as much information. Their stress levels will go up and they’ll feel the curriculum burnout.

  • No evidence that homework creates improvements

Research shows that homework doesn’t improve academic performance ; it can even make it worse. Homework creates a negative attitude towards schooling and education, making students dread going to their classes. If they don’t like attending their lessons, they will be unmotivated to listen to the discussions.

With all of the struggles that students face each day due to homework, it’s puzzling to understand why it was even invented. However, whether you think it’s helpful or not, just because the concept has survived for centuries doesn’t mean that it has to stay within the educational system.

Not all students care about the history of homework, but they all do care about the future of their educational pursuits. Maybe one day, homework will be fully removed from the curriculum of schools all over the world but until that day comes, students will have to burn the midnight oil to pass their requirements on time and hopefully achieve their own versions of success.

The Homework Dilemma: Who Invented Homework?

The inventor of homework may be unknown, but its evolution reflects contributions from educators, philosophers, and students. Homework reinforces learning, fosters discipline, and prepares students for the future, spanning from ancient civilizations to modern education. Ongoing debates probe its balance, efficacy, equity, and accessibility, prompting innovative alternatives like project-based and personalized learning. As education evolves, the enigma of homework endures.

Table of Contents

Who Invented Homework?

While historical records don’t provide a definitive answer regarding the inventor of homework in the modern sense, two prominent figures, Roberto Nevelis of Venice and Horace Mann, are often linked to the concept’s early development.

Roberto Nevelis of Venice: A Mythical Innovator?

Roberto Nevelis, a Venetian educator from the 16th century, is frequently credited with the invention of homework. The story goes that Nevelis assigned tasks to his students outside regular classroom hours to reinforce their learning—a practice that aligns with the essence of homework. However, the historical evidence supporting Nevelis as the inventor of homework is rather elusive, leaving room for skepticism.

While Nevelis’s role remains somewhat mythical, his association with homework highlights the early recognition of the concept’s educational value.

Horace Mann: Shaping the American Educational Landscape

Horace Mann, often regarded as the “Father of American Education,” made significant contributions to the American public school system in the 19th century. Though he may not have single-handedly invented homework, his educational reforms played a crucial role in its widespread adoption.

Mann’s vision for education emphasized discipline and rigor, which included assigning tasks to be completed outside of the classroom. While he did not create homework in the traditional sense, his influence on the American education system paved the way for its integration.

The invention of homework was driven by several educational objectives. It aimed to reinforce classroom learning, ensuring knowledge retention and skill development. Homework also served as a means to promote self-discipline and responsibility among students, fostering valuable study habits and time management skills.

Why Was Homework Invented?

The invention of homework was not a random educational practice but rather a deliberate strategy with several essential objectives in mind.

Reinforcing Classroom Learning

Foremost among these objectives was the need to reinforce classroom learning. When students leave the classroom, the goal is for them to retain and apply the knowledge they have acquired during their lessons. Homework emerged as a powerful tool for achieving this goal. It provided students with a structured platform to revisit the day’s lessons, practice what they had learned, and solidify their understanding.

Homework assignments often mirrored classroom activities, allowing students to extend their learning beyond the confines of school hours. Through the repetition of exercises and tasks related to the curriculum, students could deepen their comprehension and mastery of various subjects.

Fostering Self-Discipline and Responsibility

Another significant objective behind the creation of homework was the promotion of self-discipline and responsibility among students. Education has always been about more than just the acquisition of knowledge; it also involves the development of life skills and habits that prepare individuals for future challenges.

By assigning tasks to be completed independently at home, educators aimed to instill valuable study habits and time management skills. Students were expected to take ownership of their learning, manage their time effectively, and meet deadlines—a set of skills that have enduring relevance in contemporary education and beyond.

Homework encouraged students to become proactive in their educational journey. It taught them the importance of accountability and the satisfaction of completing tasks on their own. These life skills would prove invaluable in their future endeavors, both academically and in the broader context of their lives.

When Was Homework Invented?

The roots of homework stretch deep into the annals of history, tracing its origins to ancient civilizations and early educational practices. While it has undergone significant evolution over the centuries, the concept of extending learning beyond the classroom has always been an integral part of education.

Earliest Origins of Homework and Early Educational Practices

The idea of homework, in its most rudimentary form, can be traced back to the earliest human civilizations. In ancient Egypt , for instance, students were tasked with hieroglyphic writing exercises. These exercises served as a precursor to modern homework, as they required students to practice and reinforce their understanding of written language—an essential skill for communication and record-keeping in that era.

In ancient Greece , luminaries like Plato and Aristotle advocated for the use of written exercises as a tool for intellectual development. They recognized the value of practice in enhancing one’s knowledge and skills, laying the foundation for a more systematic approach to homework.

The ancient Romans also played a pivotal role in the early development of homework. Young Roman students were expected to complete assignments at home, with a particular focus on subjects like mathematics and literature. These assignments were designed to consolidate their classroom learning, emphasizing the importance of practice in mastering various disciplines.

The practice of assigning work to be done outside of regular school hours continued to evolve through various historical periods. As societies advanced, so did the complexity and diversity of homework tasks, reflecting the changing needs and priorities of education.

The Influence of Educational Philosophers

While the roots of homework extend to ancient times, the ideas of renowned educational philosophers in later centuries further contributed to its development. John Locke, an influential thinker of the Enlightenment era, believed in a gradual and cumulative approach to learning. He emphasized the importance of students revisiting topics through repetition and practice, a concept that aligns with the principles of homework.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, another prominent philosopher, stressed the significance of self-directed learning. Rousseau’s ideas encouraged the development of independent study habits and a personalized approach to education—a philosophy that resonates with modern concepts of homework.

Homework in the American Public School System

The American public school system has played a pivotal role in the widespread adoption and popularization of homework. To understand the significance of homework in modern education, it’s essential to delve into its history and evolution within the United States.

History and Evolution of Homework in the United States

The late 19th century marked a significant turning point for homework in the United States. During this period, influenced by educational reforms and the growing need for standardized curricula, homework assignments began to gain prominence in American schools.

Educational reformers and policymakers recognized the value of homework as a tool for reinforcing classroom learning. They believed that assigning tasks for students to complete outside of regular school hours would help ensure that knowledge was retained and skills were honed. This approach aligned with the broader trends in education at the time, which aimed to provide a more structured and systematic approach to learning.

As the American public school system continued to evolve, homework assignments became a common practice in classrooms across the nation. The standardization of curricula and the formalization of education contributed to the integration of homework into the learning process. This marked a significant departure from earlier educational practices, reflecting a shift toward more structured and comprehensive learning experiences.

The incorporation of homework into the American education system not only reinforced classroom learning but also fostered self-discipline and responsibility among students. It encouraged them to take ownership of their educational journey and develop valuable study habits and time management skills—a legacy that continues to influence modern pedagogy.

Controversies Around Homework

Despite its longstanding presence in education, homework has not been immune to controversy and debate. While many view it as a valuable educational tool, others question its effectiveness and impact on students’ well-being.

The Homework Debate

One of the central controversies revolves around the amount of homework assigned to students. Critics argue that excessive homework loads can lead to stress, sleep deprivation, and a lack of free time for students. The debate often centers on striking the right balance between homework and other aspects of a student’s life, including extracurricular activities, family time, and rest.

Homework’s Efficacy

Another contentious issue pertains to the efficacy of homework in enhancing learning outcomes. Some studies suggest that moderate amounts of homework can reinforce classroom learning and improve academic performance. However, others question whether all homework assignments contribute equally to learning or whether some may be more beneficial than others. The effectiveness of homework can vary depending on factors such as the student’s grade level, the subject matter, and the quality of the assignment.

Equity and Accessibility

Homework can also raise concerns related to equity and accessibility. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds may have limited access to resources and support at home, potentially putting them at a disadvantage when it comes to completing homework assignments. This disparity has prompted discussions about the role of homework in perpetuating educational inequalities and how schools can address these disparities.

Alternative Approaches to Learning

In response to the controversies surrounding homework, educators and researchers have explored alternative approaches to learning. These approaches aim to strike a balance between reinforcing classroom learning and promoting holistic student well-being. Some alternatives include:

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning emphasizes hands-on, collaborative projects that allow students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. This approach shifts the focus from traditional homework assignments to engaging, practical learning experiences.

Flipped Classrooms

Flipped classrooms reverse the traditional teaching model. Students learn new material at home through video lectures or readings and then use class time for interactive discussions and activities. This approach reduces the need for traditional homework while promoting active learning.

Personalized Learning

Personalized learning tailors instruction to individual students’ needs, allowing them to progress at their own pace. This approach minimizes the need for one-size-fits-all homework assignments and instead focuses on targeted learning experiences.

The Ongoing Conversation

The controversies surrounding homework highlight the need for an ongoing conversation about its role in education. Striking the right balance between reinforcing learning and addressing students’ well-being remains a complex challenge. As educators, parents, and researchers continue to explore innovative approaches to learning, the role of homework in the modern educational landscape continues to evolve. Ultimately, the goal is to provide students with the most effective and equitable learning experiences possible.

Unpacking the Homework Enigma

Homework, without a single inventor, has evolved through educators, philosophers, and students. It reinforces learning, fosters discipline and prepares students. From ancient times to modern education, it upholds timeless values. Yet, controversies arise—debates on balance, efficacy, equity, and accessibility persist. Innovative alternatives like project-based and personalized learning emerge. Homework’s role evolves with education.
