Multidisciplinary Research

The NYUAD Research Institute is a world-class center of cutting-edge and innovative research, scholarship, and cultural activity. Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental ScienceS (ACCESS)

ACCESS is developing an environmental monitoring network and innovative instruments based on intelligent drones, as well as developing regional climate and environmental models to help understand the observed data and predict future scenarios.

Center for Astro, Particle, and Planetary Physics

An alliance of faculty and scholars actively involved in research in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary, and particle physics. Their goal is to work toward providing answers to a series of fundamental questions related to the composition and evolution of our universe.

Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

Research faculty from NYUAD and NYUNY collaborate in five projects spanning areas from the collaboration of multi-agent systems, perception and navigation, deep learning, brain-robot interface, and other applications.

Center for Brain and Health

The Center draws on existing strengths in the domains of Cognition, Health, and Data Science from NYUAD, the UAE, and NYU’s Global Network University (GNU). 

Center for Cyber Security

A world class cyber security center partnering with key local universities, industry, and government agencies to facilitate cyber security research, education, and practice in the UAE and GCC region.

Center for Genomics and Systems Biology

Providing a nexus for cutting-edge life sciences research in the UAE, with world-class facilities and resources to promote innovative advances in genomics and systems biology.

Center for Interacting Urban Networks (CITIES)

The rapid rate of urbanization is putting strain on urban systems and posing new challenges across a multitude of sectors. This center is developing fundamental research that can be translated into pragmatic ideas for increasing the livability of our cities.

Center for Quantum and Topological Systems

A nucleation point for cross-disciplinary expertise in theory and application of quantum and topological systems, with an emphasis towards the unifying goal of robust quantum computation.

Center for Smart Engineering Materials

Focusing on the research and development of smart materials and technologies that are relevant to the key sectors of the UAE's economy, NYUAD-CSEM aims to provide smart and sustainable solutions for sensing and diagnostics in the oil/gas and civil engineering sectors.

Center for Space Science

Focused on the study of the internal structure of the Sun and stars through stellar seismology and modeling, the Center seeks to address the role of rotating convection and large-scale flows in the generation and maintenance of magnetic fields in the Sun and stars.

Center for Stability, Instability, and Turbulence

Instability of dynamics flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering, computer science, geophysics, biophysics, and the natural environment. The Center's interdisciplinary research will develop novel enabling technology to deal with this phenomena.

Public Health Research Center

The center addresses critical topics for Abu Dhabi in public health science, including diabetes and obesity.

Water Research Center

The Water Research Center (NYUAD-WRC) aims to promote innovative research in water desalination, wastewater treatment, environmental policy, and social issues. The center serves as an interdisciplinary innovation hub for water research where scientific knowledge is transformed into practical solutions.

Research is an integral part of the undergraduate experience at NYUAD and research opportunities are threaded throughout all six academic programs in the Division of Science.

Capstone Research

The Capstone Project is one of the culminating experiences for all students at NYUAD. It is a demanding, year-long endeavor that every science student completes in their fourth year.

Students work closely with one of our many research labs or groups to produce a signficant piece of research that is presented at the annual Science Capstone Festival.

Research Opportunities and Arts Apprenticeship Awards

Undergraduate research assistantship and arts apprenticeship award.

NYU Abu Dhabi invites students from NYU in New York and NYU Shanghai to apply for competitive Undergraduate Research and Art Apprenticeships. These opportunities create a platform for visiting students to contribute to an ongoing research project or serve as an apprentice under the supervision of an NYUAD faculty member, who will serve as a mentor, collaborator, and role model.

In addition to access to state-of-the-art research facilities and performance spaces on campus, students will be eligible for an assistantship award of up to $3,000 USD. $1,000 USD will be applied towards the required meal plan on campus. The remaining funding of up to $2,000 USD for the semester will be paid on a monthly basis as assistantship payments (based on hours worked) for the student’s contribution to the assigned project.

The positions span a number of disciplines within the Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Science, and Social Sciences. Please review the Visiting Student Undergraduate Research Assistantship and Arts Apprenticeship page .

Students who study away at NYUAD in the spring may have the possibility to continue the research project full-time in the subsequent summer by applying to the  Summer Visiting Undergraduate Research Program .

From Tandon to NYUAD | Shreya's Story | Visiting Students Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program

Shreya Manjrekar is majoring in Biomolecular Sciences at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She chose NYU Abu Dhabi as her study away location in Spring '23. As part of her study away semester, Shreya secured a research assistantship award under the supervision of Professor Khalil Ramadi.

From Shanghai to NYUAD | Yu's Story | Visiting Students Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program

Yu Shen is majoring in Chemistry at NYU Shanghai. She chose NYU Abu Dhabi as her study away location in Spring '23. As part of her study away semester, Yu secured a research assistantship award under the supervision of Professor Serdal Kirmizialtin.

From Shanghai to NYUAD | Linda's Story | Visiting Students Undergraduate Arts Apprenticeship Program

Linda Shao is majoring in Interactive Media Arts at NYU Shanghai. She chose NYU Abu Dhabi as her study away location in Fall '23. As part of her study away semester, Linda secured an arts apprenticeship award under the supervision of Professor Michael Ang, Associate Program Head and Professor of Practice of Interactive Media.

As part of a pre-health focused, spring semester abroad at NYU Abu Dhabi, students from NYU New York and NYU Shanghai can apply to be part of a competitive pre-health cohort that receives professional MCAT preparation funded by NYUAD as well as an introduction to the healthcare system in Abu Dhabi, including visits to healthcare-related organizations.

Amnesty reports heightened concern over Abu Dhabi campus

Human rights nonprofit Amnesty International reported escalated restrictions at NYU’s Abu Dhabi campus, alleging that faculty were told criticism of university leadership could lead to prosecution under Emirati law. The report detailed the deportations of a student and instructor at the campus, which the group said are not in compliance with internationally accepted human rights standards.

The report, released Aug. 22, compiled information from student and faculty accounts, a WSN investigation and other public sources to illustrate concerns over restrictions on pro-Palestinian speech and activity at the campus. It came three months after this year’s graduation ceremony at the Abu Dhabi campus saw new policies restricting attire and the deportation of one student, leading to a statement from NYU’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

NYU Abu Dhabi provost Arlie Petters told faculty members that criticism of administration at the university’s Washington Square campus — specifically regarding the arrests of students participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations — could subject them to prosecution under Emirati law, according to the report. Amnesty claimed that there is no precedent of prosecution for criticizing “foreign nationals outside the UAE who are not government leaders,” and suggested that Petters aimed to mitigate criticism of the university’s administration rather than protect faculty.

The report also states that a Palestinian instructor was ordered to leave in April “without any explanation or legal recourse.” The order was allegedly conducted by Emirati authorities and delayed for one week by NYU Abu Dhabi administration, before the campus’ dean of students Michael Martinez told students the instructor was deported for their “political opinions relating to Palestine.” The incident preceded the May deportation of a Ph.D. student who held a keffiyeh and yelled “free Palestine” while walking the stage at the graduation ceremony. 

In a statement to WSN, NYU Abu Dhabi spokesperson Martin Mbugua said that while the university has academic jurisdiction over the campus, students and faculty are not “immune from local laws.”

“NYU has no authority over any nation’s immigration or law enforcement actions or decisions,” Mbugua said. “This reality is why we undertake substantial efforts to make sure our community members understand the culture and laws in which they pursue their studies and scholarship, and advise them clearly and repeatedly about expectations, obligations and boundaries.”

The graduate’s deportation took place amid unprecedented restrictions for the year’s commencement, which only allowed students to wear “approved academic attire” and prohibited bags or any item “not required” for the ceremony. A graduating senior previously told WSN that NYU Abu Dhabi vice chancellor Mariët Westermann spoke to students leading up to the ceremony and “claimed that keffiyehs and cultural gear had always been banned, and that this is the first year they were enforcing it.” Footage from previous commencements — which was reviewed by WSN and Amnesty — showed dozens of students wearing keffiyehs. 

The report outlined five events NYU Abu Dhabi had denied permission for — including a vigil, a talk with a guest author and a Palestinian poetry night — and a sixth event that the administration did not permit until organizers changed advertising language to no longer include the words “resistance” and “solidarity.” It also detailed that at least eight faculty members were summoned to interrogations with the UAE Ministry of Interior after holding a teach-in last October, some of whom were held for over 10 hours overnight. 

“The stifling of speech and expression that we have seen here at NYU in New York has been even more alarming on the Abu Dhabi campus, because of the threatening reality of deportation and imprisonment on the Abu Dhabi authorities,” Andrew Ross, a member of the AAUP, wrote to WSN. “We have been shocked to see students and faculty arrested here in New York at the request of the administration, but the lack of civil rights in Abu Dhabi makes it even worse.” 

Amnesty stated that the Emirati government’s “arbitrary” detention and deportations are not in compliance with “customary international law.” The report also stated that universities “have a due diligence responsibility to identify and prevent any human rights violations by foreign state actors,” as per the United Nations guiding principles on business and human rights, and that NYU’s administration has “not yet taken remedial actions.” The organization claimed it emailed university leadership on July 2 to request comments on the events detailed in the report, but did not receive a reply as of the report’s publication.

Semester Away Study Abroad Scholarships

Nyu scholarships and aid.

Tuition and registration fees for full-time Steinhardt students remains the same during semesters spent at a global location as long as the student is enrolled in 12-18 points. Financial aid package also remains the same while studying a semester away at an NYU Global Academic Center.

All Steinhardt undergraduate students who have been admitted for a semester at an NYU Global Academic Center, are automatically evaluated for the below awards:

Global Pathways Scholarship (up to $4,000 per semester) Global Programs Merit Scholarships ($1,500 per semester) Study Away Need-Based Grants ($3,000)

Additional specialized awards are available for students depending on academic area of interest and / or program selection. Application requirements and deadlines vary.

NYU Abu Dhabi Undergraduate Arts Apprenticeship Awards 

NYU Abu Dhabi invites NYU New York students to apply for competitive Undergraduate Arts Apprenticeship Awards for Spring 2024. The positions span a number of areas within the Arts and Humanities.

The Arts Apprenticeship Awards create a platform for visiting students to contribute to an ongoing research project or serve as an apprentice under the supervision of an NYUAD faculty member, who will serve as a mentor, collaborator, and role model. Students will have access to ultramodern  arts facilities at NYU Abu Dhabi .  See available positions  here .

Students selected for the program will be eligible for an apprenticeship  award of up to $3,000, in which $2,000 is earned in up to 15 hours/week of the artwork, and $1,000 is applied towards the cost of the student’s meal plan.

The deadline to apply is October 20.
