Essayer: j'essaie, or j'essaye?

I was confused how I should conjugate the verb essayer , or any other ones like nettoyer .

I looked up in a conjugation website,

J'essaie / ye

I'm guessing that means both j'essaie and j'essaye are accepted. However, my teacher said to use j'essaie .

Which one is correct? If both are accepted, is there any difference?

It looks like both are in regular use today, and that this is also the case for "payer", "balayer", as well as any other verb in "-ayer". I am not aware of any rule mandating to use one rather than the other when writing vs. speaking.

The pronunciation is slightly different though: "j'essaye" would sound at the end like "pareil", whereas "j'essaie" would sound like "sait".

I am not aware that one pronunciation or the other would have this or that connotation. It is even possible for native speakers to use both in the same conversation.

Regular -er Verbs Conjugation Method

This section will show you how regular -er verbs are conjugated in the conditionnel passé.

There is a two step method that will make everything very easy for you.

In order to conjugate verbs that end with -er in the conditionnel passé one must:

• Conjugate avoir in the conditionnel présent
• Add the particip passé of the -er verb.

The verb parler means “to speak” in English.

We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “ je ” form using the two step method.

Avoir in the conditionnel présent is aur ais .

The particip passé of parler is parl é .

So when you wish to say “I would have spoken” in French you get:

J’ aur ais parl é

Common Regular -er Verbs

French has three regular verb groups

• regular -er verbs
• regular -ir verbs
• regular -re verbs

The regular -er verbs group is the biggest and most useful group. Most French verbs fall in this group.

Here is a list of common verbs that you are sure to encounter in day-to-day life:

There are 2 important rules to take into account, when you want to pronounce regular er verbs conditionnel passé conjugations.

• The je , tu , il/elle/on , and ils/elles form have the same pronunciation.

• The je form of both the conditionnel passé and the futur simple have the same pronunciation.

J’aurai s parlé I would have spoken

J’aurai parlé I will have spoken

The context will reveal which one is correct.
