What is Bloom’s Taxonomy?

Bloom’s Taxonomy is a framework used by educators to classify educational objectives and define different levels of cognitive complexity. Developed by educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom in 1956, the taxonomy has been revised over the years, with the latest version incorporating digital learning and updated language.

At its core, Bloom’s Taxonomy consists of six hierarchical levels, arranged from simple to complex cognitive processes:

  • Remembering : This level involves recalling facts, concepts, or information without necessarily understanding them. Activities at this level include memorization, recitation, and identification.
  • Understanding : Here, students demonstrate comprehension by interpreting, summarizing, or explaining ideas in their own words. They grasp the meaning of concepts rather than just memorizing them.
  • Applying : This level focuses on applying knowledge and concepts in new situations or contexts. Students solve problems, execute procedures, or utilize information in novel scenarios.
  • Analyzing : At this level, students break down information into its component parts to understand relationships and underlying structures. They identify patterns, differentiate between elements, and draw conclusions.
  • Evaluating : This involves making judgments or assessments based on criteria and standards. Students critically examine information, arguments, or theories to determine their validity or effectiveness.
  • Creating : The highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy involves synthesizing information and generating new ideas or products. Students demonstrate originality and creativity by designing, composing, or inventing based on their understanding.

As teachers, understanding Bloom’s Taxonomy can inform lesson planning, assessment design, and instructional strategies. By aligning learning objectives with appropriate levels of cognitive complexity, teachers can scaffold student learning effectively, promote higher-order thinking skills, and facilitate more profound understanding. Incorporating activities and assessments across all levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy fosters comprehensive learning experiences that cater to diverse learner needs and promote intellectual growth.

These spelling activities provide an excellent opportunity to explore the taxonomy in action.

What are Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences?

Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, proposed by Howard Gardner in 1983, suggests that intelligence is not a singular entity but rather a collection of distinct modalities, or “intelligences,” each with its own set of abilities and preferences. Gardner initially identified seven intelligences and later added an eighth. These intelligences represent different ways individuals perceive and understand the world, learn, and solve problems. Here’s a brief overview:

  • Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence : Individuals with strong verbal-linguistic intelligence excel in language-related tasks such as reading, writing, speaking, and storytelling. They have a knack for understanding and using words effectively.
  • Logical-Mathematical Intelligence : People with logical-mathematical intelligence exhibit proficiency in reasoning, logic, and numerical operations. They excel in problem-solving, mathematical computations, and scientific investigations.
  • Visual-Spatial Intelligence : This intelligence involves the ability to perceive and manipulate visual information effectively. Individuals with strong visual-spatial intelligence excel in tasks such as interpreting maps, visualizing objects in three dimensions, and artistic endeavors.
  • Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence : People with bodily-kinesthetic intelligence possess excellent control over body movements and physical activities. They learn best through hands-on experiences and are often skilled in activities such as sports, dance, and manual crafts.
  • Musical Intelligence : Individuals with musical intelligence have a heightened sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, and melodies. They often excel in playing musical instruments, composing music, and recognizing patterns in auditory stimuli.
  • Interpersonal Intelligence : This intelligence involves understanding and interacting effectively with others. Individuals with strong interpersonal intelligence exhibit empathy, communication, and leadership qualities.
  • Intrapersonal Intelligence : Intrapersonal intelligence refers to self-awareness and introspection. Individuals with this intelligence understand their own emotions, motivations, and goals, leading to a strong sense of self and personal development.
  • Naturalistic Intelligence : Gardner later proposed naturalistic intelligence, which relates to an individual’s affinity for understanding and interacting with the natural world. People with this intelligence exhibit a keen appreciation for nature, environmental awareness, and the ability to categorize and classify natural phenomena.

Gardner’s theory emphasizes the diversity of human cognition and suggests that educators should recognize and cultivate these various intelligences to support holistic learning experiences for all students. Educators can promote engagement, understanding, and success across diverse learner profiles by incorporating activities and instructional strategies that cater to different intelligences.

10 Creative Ways to Practice Spelling Words with Any Word List

Are you looking for fun ways to practice spelling words with your students? I’m always looking for fun spelling practice ideas to engage my students during word work. Today I’m going to share 10 spelling activities that I know your students will enjoy that you can do with any word list.

This post contains affiliate links. You can see my disclosure here .

Ghost spelling

Fun Spelling Practice Ideas

I love finding creative ways to practice spelling words that work with any word list, that way you can use them time and again and differentiate them for your students. These 10 spelling practice ideas are hands-on and are sure to be a blast for students.

#1: Ghost Spelling

This spelling activity is an oldie but a goodie. It’s called many different things, but in my class, we called it Ghost Spelling , and it is one of my students’ favorite ways to practice spelling words!

I always introduce this activity around Halloween because it adds to the excitement. How’s that for a hook, right?!

When introducing this activity, I ask students to get out their spelling journal or recording sheet , a white crayon, and some markers. They always ask why they need a white crayon.

Then, I show them what they think is a blank page (when secretly the words are written in white crayon). I always tell my kids that I’m “magic,” so this was a perfect opportunity to perform a magic trick for them.

I take a marker and color over the “blank page” to reveal the spelling words! My students are always amazed by this! I love watching their faces light up in surprise. This gets them even more excited to practice their spelling words.

Here is how Ghost Spelling works:

  • Write a spelling word on a piece of paper or recording sheet with white crayon.
  • Using a marker or water color paint, color over the white crayon.
  • Watch the word magically appear!

Ghost Spelling

#2: Kwik Stix Spelling

The next spelling activity uses Kwik Stix ! If you have not used these in your classroom, you are missing out! They are like glue sticks but with tempera paint. They dry almost instantly, are mess free, and make practicing spelling words so much fun. Kids seriously love them!

This fun spelling practice idea is super simple. Simply give students a piece of white construction paper and let them practice writing their spelling words with Kwik Stix. This gives the students a little creative outlet, too!

Kwik Stix Spelling

#3: Crazy Spelling

Crazy Spelling is another one of my favorite ways to practice spelling words and is a hit with kids! It is so important to give students choice, and that is exactly what this activity provides.

For this spelling activity, students roll a dice. The number that they roll tells them what to do next. They might write their words in funky letters, huge letters, in their favorite color, etc.

When dice and fun writing utensils are involved, you can’t go wrong! Students can glue the Crazy Spelling page into their writing journal and write their spelling words on the other side of the page.

Crazy Spelling

#4: Squiggle Spelling

Squiggle Spelling is another fun way to practice spelling words. Using this Squiggle Spelling template or on basic notebook paper, have students draw a long squiggly line with as many loops and curves as they want. The crazier, the better!

Then, they must write their spelling words along the line that they created. The crazier the squiggly line, the crazier it is to write their spelling words.

Squiggle Spelling

#5: Pattern Block Words

Whenever you can incorporate cross-curricular learning into your lessons, take advantage of it! Pattern Block Words is one of my favorite ways to practice spelling words because it combines word work with math and geometry concepts.

Students will build their spelling words in a hands-on way with pattern blocks. Plus, they’ll work on problem-solving and direction-following skills as they look at the Build the Word cards and complete the pattern on their work mat to spell their words.

This activity is great for sight word practice as well.

Pattern Block Words

#6: Tic-Tac-Toe Spelling

What kid doesn’t love a game of Tic-Tac-Toe? Bring in some fun spelling practice with Tic-Tac-Toe Spelling !

Students will play in partners, each choosing a spelling word. They will take turns writing their word in the Tic-Tac-Toe squares on the recording sheet or on a piece of paper. The first player to get 3 in a row wins!

Then, they choose new spelling words and move to the next Tic-Tac-Toe board and play again. This would be a fun spelling activity to use to rotate around the room and play with different partners.

Tic-Tac-Toe Spelling

#7: Dial the Word

Anytime you can word code-cracking and math into your spelling practice, it’s a teacher win! This Dial the Word spelling activity is one of my class’s favorite ways to practice spelling words.

Students will practice writing their spelling word, matching up the letters to the number code, and adding the numbers together.

Not only does this help students practice key spelling and addition skills, but it also familiarizes them with the number pattern on a phone.

This activity works with any spelling or sight word list.

Dial the Word

#8: Crack the Code

Every kid loves to crack codes, so this Crack the Code spelling activity is a great way to give students an opportunity to be spelling word detectives!

Students will write a spelling word in each box. Then, they’ll look at the code to draw the symbols to match the letters in the word.

There are a ton of different codes available to make it even more exciting!

Crack the Code

#9: Fraction Spelling

There are a ton of creative ways to practice spelling words, but when you can incorporate math into the mix, I can’t resist!

Fraction Spelling is a great way to practice spelling words and basic fraction concepts. Students will write the word and determine how many vowels and consonants are in the word. Then, they’ll write the fraction showing how many letters are consonants.

This can be done using the Fraction Spelling recording sheet or on a piece of paper or a whiteboard.

You can never have too much fraction practice, so this is a great cross-curricular activity.

Fraction Spelling

#10: Money Spelling

This spelling practice activity is another one that incorporates mathematical concepts into word work. This is a great way for students to work on spelling words, recognizing coins, and counting coins to find the value.

Students will write the word on the Money Spelling recording sheet . Then, they’ll look at the coin code and draw the coins that represent each letter. Finally, they’ll add the coins to find the value.

As a math guru, this is one of my favorite ways to practice spelling words.

Money Spelling

I hope you enjoyed these 10 fun ways to practice spelling words. Each activity can be used with any spelling or sight word list and is sure to make word work more fun in your classroom.

You can find these spelling activities and many more in my Spelling Activities and Games for Any Word List activity pack .

I like to keep these activities handy in hanging file pocket charts for easy access.

18 Easy and Fun Ways to Practice Spelling Words in the Classroom

Use these 18 fun and engaging activities to help your students practice their spelling words while having fun at the same time.

Sensory Activities to Practice Spelling Words

Have students that love activities with sensory input? Or just want high engagement when practicing spelling, then sensory activities are the way to go!

1. Playdough

Using playdough is a simple and easy way to get your students to practice their spelling words. Most teachers have playdough on hand, so no special trips to the store are required!

Using playdough is a great way to get your students to practice their fine motor skills while also practicing spelling.

Give your students a printout of their spelling words and play dough. Have them roll and manipulate the play dough to make the letters of each word. For those students who might need some more support, you could provide laminated sheets with the words printed on them to follow as a guide.

2. Shaving Cream

I know you’re thinking about the mess of using shaving cream, but truly I don’t think I have ever seen students more engaged in writing out their words than when I placed trays of shaving cream in front of them.

Let students spell their words by writing in shaving cream for a fun and engaging activity that will clean the desks too!

For the least mess possible, set up a tray with a laminated set of words for each student. Have students roll up their sleeves and let the fun begin!  Students use their fingers (or a paintbrush if they are averse to touching the shaving cream) and draw out each letter of their spelling words.  And . . . you get a bonus of clean desks too!

3. Sand Writing

My guess is that you have heard of using sand trays to help students practice writing letters. The same principle applies to helping them practice spelling words.

Writing in sand, sugar or salt is a great way to provide students with spelling practice with extra sensory input.

Set up a shallow tray with sand and a stack of cards with the targeted spelling words next to it. Have the student turn over the card and use their finger or a paintbrush to draw each letter of the word in the sand.  And . . . if you don’t have sand just substitute it with salt or sugar.

4. Pasta Words

Pasta words are sure to be a classroom hit when it comes to practicing spelling words. Grab a few boxes of spaghetti at the grocery store and place them in a container. Give students trays and their spelling words. Have them make each letter of their spelling words using the uncooked pasta.

Students can follow a template you give them or can create on their own. Just know that they will most likely need to break some strands of spaghetti to build words that have curves. Don’t throw away those pieces though! You can save them for next time.

As an alternative, you can also use pasta or cereal already in letter shapes.  Really any chance to “play with food” will engage students.

Using spaghetti noodles, letter noodles or even letter cereal students will love practicing their spelling words.

Games to Practice Spelling Words

Playing games is a great way to get students to practice spelling words. Here are some simple and low prep games you can start using right away!

5. Concentration

Take the classic game of concentration and use it to help your students practice spelling words. Print each of the spelling words on card stock and cut them out to make individual cards. Then print out a matching picture for each word. Again, cut these out to make cards.

Have the students mix up the cards, and layout on the desk or floor and start matching! Students will work on finding the matching word and picture.  This works really great when you have homophones on your spelling list.

6. Roll a Word

This game is perfect for students who love working with partners.  Pair up students who are studying the same words. Give them a ball to roll back and forth.  Play in partners or as a group for some whole class spelling practice.

Have students spell words by adding one letter at a time as they roll a ball back and forth to each other.

Arm them with a list of their spelling words. One partner picks a word and rolls the ball to the other saying the first letter of the word. The partner rolls the ball back adding the second letter. This goes back and forth until they have spelled all of their words!

7. Roll and Spell

Give each student a die and a worksheet with a key, like the one from my Back to School Spelling Activities pack. The student rolls the die and the number it lands on tells the student how they have to write one of their spelling words.

Some ideas include:

  • Writing letters with a simple picture in between (like an apple)
  • Writing the word in marker
  • Rainbow writing the word
  • Letting students choose how they want to write the word!

Make spelling a game with this Roll and Spell worksheet they will love.

Colorful Ways to Practice Spelling Words

Have some budding artists in your room? They will love these fun and colorful ways to practice their spelling words.

8. Apple Tree Spelling

I love using this activity during Back to School season because it is a great way to have students practice the order of the letters in their spelling words.

Help your students practice the order of letter with this fun Apple Tree Spelling worksheet.

Print off black and white clip art apple trees (or grab a done for you version here ). Have students write a spelling word in the trunk of the tree in brown. Then in red, write each letter of that word in the tree-like apples.

9. Bookshelf Spelling

This activity is a great way to practice spelling words and alphabetical order, plus is beautifully colored! Students write each of their spelling words in alphabetical order on the spine of each book.

Students can create a custom spelling word book shelf with this fun activity.

Then the fun begins. Have students color each book. You can give them parameters like all words that start with “p” are purple, all words that are people, places, and things are blue, or each book gets its own color (this is a great excuse to break out those mega crayon packs!).

Don’t worry about making your own handouts because you can get this Bookshelf Spelling activity here.

10. Chalk to the Rescue

Take spelling practice outdoors with some sidewalk chalk.  Have students choose different colors for each word or even for each letter. The playground will be decorated with beautiful word rainbows, and your students will appreciate the extra fresh air as they practice spelling words.

Take spelling practice outside with some sidewalk chalk.

11. Apple Words

Again, this is a great activity for Back to School or fall but can be fun all year round. Students will get some repetition in with this activity.

getting in lots of spelling practice is easy with this Apple Words worksheet which requires students to write each spelling word four times.

Students write a spelling word 4 times in each apple. They then can color in each section. They could choose to color the apple all one color or make their own creations!

12. Crayon Spelling

This is definitely the most colorful of the activities. Students pick a color of crayon, write each letter of the spelling word spaced across a line (or a curve) and then write the whole word.  Each word gets a different color.

This rainbow writing spelling practice activity will have your students engaged and practicing those important words.

Students will write out the word twice, and they are paying special attention to each letter as they put it on the line with  Crayon Spelling .

Craft Activities to Practice Spelling Words

Get out the scissors and glue and start crafting for some fun ways to practice spelling words!

13. Magazine Words

Gather up some old magazines. If you don’t have a stash of your own, I bet your art teacher does and if all else fails, you can grab some free newspapers from the grocery store.

Let students use old magazines to find the letters they need to spell their words.

Have students find letters from their spelling words, cut them out, and then paste them on a large piece of chart paper. They get to practice spelling while creating a fun and unique collage!

14. Stamped Words

Pull out some letter stamps and ink pads and let the practice begin. This activity can be as simple or elaborate as you would like.

Your students will love practicing their spelling words by spelling them with letter stamps.

Here are some ways you can do this activity with your students:

  • Have them use a different color for each letter
  • Give them fancy paper to stamp their words on
  • Have students who are practicing the same words do this activity in a group. After stamping a letter, they switch papers and the next person has to continue the spelling

Practice Spelling Words with Multiple Intelligences

15. sign your words .

This is a great way for kinesthetic learners to practice spelling words. Students use sign language to spell out their words to each other. You can give them a handout with visuals of each of the letters in sign language and then pick a word to sign.

Engage different learning styles by trying different ways for students to practice like using sign language.

This can be a great partner activity. The partner can follow along and repeat back to their partner the word they just signed.

 16. Sound Words

Auditory learners will love practicing their spelling words using Sound Words. Grab some old recorders or teach students how to record their voices on their devices. Have them say each of their spelling words, spell each of the words and then replay the recording to help practice them.

have students record themselves orally spelling a word - then play it back and write what they hear.

You can even have students practice writing the word as they listen to the replay for extra practice.

17. Telephone Words

Struggle to find ways to help your logical-mathematical learners with their spelling? Telephone Words is the answer!

Use a telephone to turn words into numbers or even math problems.

Grab an old landline phone and have students punch out their spelling words. They can record the words in letters and then in numbers.  You can even have them add the numbers together to find the total value of the word.

18. Type your words

This is a classic but also a perfect activity for your linguistic learners. Set students up with a word document and have them type out their words.

Typing is a great way to get your students excited about practicing their spelling words while also getting in some tech practice at the same time.

You can change up this activity by:

  • Having students type their spelling words in all caps
  • Having them type them in all lowercase letters
  • Having them type each word in a different font
  • Having them type each word in a different size

If your district has a typing program, you can also have students use this program to practice spelling their words.

Back to School Spelling Activities (For Any List!)

All of these activities are easy and fun, but if you want (or need) to skip the prep, I’ve created a packet of engaging spelling activities that can be used with any list of words. The handouts are formatted and directions are written. No guesswork on your part. Simply print and go or use the included digital spelling activities too! Though they are Back to School Spelling Activities you can truly use them throughout the whole year!

Use these fun and engaging activities to get your students excited about learning and practicing their spelling words this year.

Movement Spelling: Walk Your Spelling Words

How to study spelling words.

Now that you’ve got a ton of ideas, how do you use them to actually study and learn your words?

When you sit down with a new spelling list with your child. Go through the words with them. Specifically, look for any spelling rules that they need to keep in mind. Do the words have silent e’s? Are there any consonant groupings (such as ch or st) or vowel groupings (such as ea or ai)? You can refer to this list of spelling rules for help.

Another thing to keep in mind is repetition. Reading through your list multiple times won’t do the trick. You need to actually spell them and write them, sometimes over and over again.

Some words will be easy to learn (or your child already know how to spell them) and others will be harder. When practicing, you don’t need to give equal weight to each word. Some days you may only want to use the tricky words in your spelling activities or just focus on the one word that your child is stuck on. An activity like Pinprick Words is perfect for those times when you need to go over one or two specific words.

The best spelling activities to make learning fun.

Ways to Practice Spelling Words At Home

While these activities are intended for both classroom at home, every one of them will work as after school practice.

Once you’ve tried out several ideas, decide which ones were favorites. These are the activities that we’ll want to prepare for by gathering (or purchasing) supplies and setting up a spelling homework station. This way, you don’t have to prep activities every single day.

Just because you prepare for certain activities doesn’t mean that you can’t do some of the other ideas!

Spelling homework supplies

You don’t need anything fancy to set up your supplies in a homework station. I’d suggest just a box or bin that could be easily put away and easy for your child to use. A small storage bin with a lid and handle would be perfect! Once you’ve found your bin, just fill it with the supplies you need.

If you don’t have a place to tuck away your bin, you can store your supplies in a cute, decorative bin. Here’s a pretty rustic wooden supply caddy that would look cute sitting out on a desk.

You can shop my list of spelling homework supplies here.

35 Fun, Hands-On Spelling Activities to Use With Any Word List

Inside: 35 fun, hands-on spelling activities that get kids actively engaged with their spelling words – thinking, making, creating! Includes a printable version for at home learning.

There’s no doubting that some children (if not all!) learn best when they are actively engaged with thinking, making, creating – DOING. Which is why it can be advantageous to add an active, hands-on element to subjects that more typically rely on rote learning style activities – like spelling.

The 35 hands-on spelling activities included on this list are much more fun and engaging than simply writing out spelling words over and over again (my kids both strongly disliked the ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ approach to spelling – and I honestly didn’t see much learning happening with it).

These ideas can be useful as activities for literacy rotations or as homework activities, working particularly well with children in the early elementary/primary grades. Plus, at the bottom of this post you’ll find a handy printable version that can be sent home with families to use for at home learning.

40 Effective Spelling Activities for Kids

August 18, 2022 //  by  Jane Brooks

Some students dread math while another's anxiety skyrockets when you say it's spelling time. You can decrease the stress for students by moving away from rote learning and weekly spelling tests. By adding movement, hands-on and sensory activities, and gaming to your spelling lesson plans, you will increase engagement and relieve student anxiety. Below are 40 curated fun and creative spelling ideas for every grade level. From rainbow writing to peer editing, you will find the perfect match to get your students excited about spelling.

1. In My Name, Not in My Name

2. Sight Word Word Search

JWDHnKTSawhcbIrPgSTA

6 Fun Spelling Activity Ideas to Use in the Classroom This School Year

Hero image

Written by Holly (Teach Starter)

Are you searching for spelling activities that won’t make your students groan? We get it! Spelling is a crucial skill that helps our students communicate and build the skills they need to be proficient writers, but the structure of the English language doesn’t exactly make it easy for kids to learn.

With thousands of words borrowed from a host of other languages, English spelling is packed with irregularities that make it challenging for young learners. But while it’s true we’re teaching in an age of auto-correct, spell-checking software and dictionaries available with a few swipes of a finger, the fact remains that teaching spelling is as important now as it ever has been.

So how do you get your students on board with learning the complex but fundamental rules that will have them spelling every word just right, every time? Make it fun … of course!

The teachers on the Teach Starter team have created this list of some of our favourite spelling activities and ideas to make stringing letters together just a bit more engaging this school year. Read on for ideas for a number of year levels — including hands-on activities — plus some free printables!

Short on time? This set of task cards is packed with 57 different spelling activities !

Spelling Activities for Primary Students

Play wordketball.

This spelling twist on the game of basketball requires a small hoop, which you can find at a cheap shop and mount on your whiteboard. Most are available with suction cups, so they can easily be removed. You’ll also need a small ball that can fit in the hoop, plus your spelling word list!

Here’s how it works:

  • Print out your list of weekly spelling words on slips of paper, and place each slip into a bowl.
  • Line students up in two teams at the hoop.
  • The student at the front of line 1 will select a paper slip from the bowl and read the word out loud.
  • The student at the front of the other line then has to spell that word out loud. If they get the word correct, they then have a chance to shoot a basket to earn a point for their team before moving to the back of the line. If they are incorrect, they move to the back of the line without making an attempt.
  • Play continues with the bowl full of words alternating between teams until you run out of spelling words.
  • The team with the most amount of baskets made in wordketball wins!

classroom whiteboard with a basketball hoop and the words give it your best shot! in orange letters

Looking to enhance students’ understanding of the meaning of their spelling words? You could also challenge students to share the definition of the word to earn a point for their team or read out the definition and challenge students to guess the word before spelling it.

Go ‘Around the World’

Around the World is a whole-class game that’s easy to adapt for different ability levels.

  • Choose a student to be the first traveller, and have them stand behind the person seated to their right.
  • Read a word to this student, and he or she must spell it aloud.
  • If they get the word correct, they move to stand behind the next person seated to their right — moving ‘around the world.’
  • If the word is spelled incorrectly, give the word to the student seated in front of them. If that student spells the word correctly, that student becomes the next traveller.

The goal of the game is for a student to make it all the way around the circle (around the world).  This one works really well in small groups.

Create Spelling Word Shapes

This is another hands-on idea that will help students create visual memories — allow students to practise writing out their spelling words in their favourite shape! For this idea, you’ll need tracing paper and simple black and white colouring sheets or concrete poem templates . Students place the tracing sheet on top of their shape, and write their spelling words all along the black lines!

Here’s what it looks like when a word is written down to create the shape of a cat!

spelling words written out in the shape of a cat

Teach Starter Teacher Tip : This activity works best using simple line drawings like this crescent moon shape poem  or our free printable heart template .

Play Sight Word Bingo

We know kids love playing Bingo — it’s why we have dozens of sight word bingo cards ready to print on Teach Starter. You can print one of the pre-made options, or add your spelling word list to this blank customisable template and have students play in small groups.

Too simple? This fun activity is deceptive! While it’s one that will get your students swept up, it also reinforces spelling as your students will need to recognise the spelling of words and match them to the corresponding spaces on their bingo cards. This repetition of reading and recognising words can reinforce spelling skills and help students memorise the correct spellings.

Play Celebrity Heads with Words

Encourage students to learn more about their spelling words with the help of their classmates and a game of Celebrity Heads With Words.

Create a hat using coloured card, or print out a crown kids can wear for the rest of the day. Use putty to stick a word to the front of the student’s hat. Students will work in small groups to work out the spelling word on their hats. They can ask simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions such as ‘Am I noun?’ or ‘Do I start with a consonant?’

When they have correctly guessed, they will then attempt to spell the word. If they are correct, they earn a point. Play then moves to the next player in the group who will have to guess the word on their own hat. The goal of the game is to have the most points in the group.

Text reads Printable Animal Crown Templates beneath an image of different animal crowns

Make Spelling Words Sparkle

Sparkle is a favourite on our teacher team, and it’s a great game to get the whole class involved!

  • You’ll need to arrange the students in a circle or a line, depending on how much space you have in your classroom.
  • The student chosen to start the game off should say the first letter of a spelling word (you can provide the word, or you can challenge the student to remember one from their list).
  • The next student in line says the second letter of the word, the following student says the third letter, and so on, until the word is spelled out completely. For example, if the word is ‘butterfly,’ the starting student would say ‘B,’ the next student would say ‘U,’ and so on until the last student says ‘Y.’
  • After the word has been spelled, the next person must say ‘Sparkle.’ This encourages active participation — if the student wasn’t paying attention and doesn’t say sparkle, they will have to sit down!
  • The player next to the person who said Sparkle must sit down.
  • Provide a new word for students to spell, starting with the next student in the line (or circle). If the student cannot think of a letter or says the wrong letter, they are out and must sit down.
  • The game continues this way, with each student saying the next letter of the spelling word until only one student is left standing.

What an amazing list of ideas - they are so creative. I thought you might also be interested in an app called Squeebles Spelling that we've designed - it allows parents or teachers to input their own customised list of weekly spellings and record the words and any meanings in their own voice. Children are rewarded for their efforts by earning turns on a fun mini-game within the app. The app includes a Parent's Zone, so that parents can remain engaged with their child's progress, where you can see exactly how your child is doing and any words that they may be struggling with, even down to exactly how they're misspelling the word. The words they struggled with are added to a 'tricky words list' within the app, which the child can work on and return to at any point. If you're interested the app is available for Apple and android devices. I hope you don't mind me letting you know about it here.

Awesome ideas.....I will use this in my classroom for word work and working with my son! Thanks a million!!

25 Hands On Spelling Activities for Any List

  • Christopher Olson
  • April 15, 2021

Memories flash back to me standing alongside my peers in Elementary School.  My fingers are crossed behind my back, standing stiff as a board.  Hoping and wishing for an easy word.  I didn’t want to be the first one to sit down if I spelled it wrong.  The exercise is called our “spelling practice” to prove how well we’ve been studying… the result is pure anxiety torture!

I promised myself I would never do a spelling activity like that in my classroom!  I want students to feel comfortable and able to express that they don’t know something and not feel shamed by it.  How will I address this goal and promise of mine?  Why hands-on spelling activities of course!

fun spelling homework ideas

Below you will find 25 Hands-On Spelling Activities that you can use with ANY spelling list.  Either 10 words, 12 words, 15, or even 20!  The number doesn’t matter and the materials needed for most of these activities are found in almost every classroom!  Numbers 15, 17, and 19 are my favorite off of this list!!  I cannot wait to hear what yours will be…

1 ~ Pattern Block Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

Build your spelling words with pattern blocks.  My students love to look off of their paper to create their words with pattern blocks.  Once they create their words they go in and color in the blocks how they built it.

2 ~ Stamp and Spell

All you need for this activity are some letter stampers.  Feel free to switch this activity up a bit using different mediums.  You could use ink pads to stamp your words onto paper.  Next time you bring out the stampers feel free to use play-dough instead.

fun spelling homework ideas

To make this a cross-curricular activity and make your own play-dough in the classroom!  Here is a recipe for you to use and feel free to adapt it by adding glitter or a few drops of your favorite essential oils!

3 ~ Play Dough Activities

fun spelling homework ideas

Besides stamping in the play dough, you can create letters and words manipulating the dough itself.  My Type A personality really shines through making sure that each student has their own playdough cans… because MIXED COLORS are a BIG NO-NO for me!

4 ~ Clothespins

fun spelling homework ideas

Have any extra clothespins lying around?  Write some letters on them with a marker.  Students can work individually or in small groups to spell a word using the pins.  A great fine motor activity from OT Toolbox and SugarAunts to have them pinch the pin open to clasp onto a board or paper spelling the correct word.

5 ~ Spelling Strings

fun spelling homework ideas

Wow!  Another great fine motor activity here! You can use a few different materials for this activity. Using alphabet beads you could string your word.  Also, if beads are not readily available for you to use, the string is drawn for you, have your students use letter tiles, letter magnets, letter anything!

6 ~ Egg Hunt Mix Up

Who Doesn’t love an egg hunt?!?   I like to cut up spelling words and include the letters inside an egg.  Hide the eggs throughout the classroom and when it is the group’s turn, they must find all of the eggs and spell the words correctly using the tiles inside.  Hey… you don’t even need to do this around Easter time either.  No judgment here!

7 ~ Spin It & Spell It

fun spelling homework ideas

My students love and often request this particular activity.  Using a pencil and a paper clip the children use the spinner to decide what words to write below.  Once they spin the paper clip holding it in place with their pencil, it will land on a number.  Whatever number they land on is the word they write in a box below.

8 ~ “Graffiti Wall”

fun spelling homework ideas

Depending on the weather outside, sometimes we conduct this activity outside or quietly in the hallway.  I use a large piece of bulletin board paper that I tape or pin to the wall.  Next, I provide each student a different spelling word.  In their best “graffiti” style they would write, color, and provide their own artistic take to their design.   After we all stand back and take a look at our spelling list, noting and spelling each word individually.

9 ~ Multi-Sensory Writing Without a Pencil Activities

fun spelling homework ideas

I had the opportunity to write a different blog post on 13 Fun Ways to Get Reluctant Writers Writing.  So many of these activities and materials fit well within spelling.  #1 and #11 are my favorites to do in the classroom!  Who doesn’t love writing in shaving cream?!?

10 ~ Lego “Build A Word”

fun spelling homework ideas

This activity has a similar setup to the clothespin activity.  To start, This Reading Mama suggests writing letters on individual lego blocks.  Students could work individually or in small groups to connect their blocks to spell the word correctly.  You can differentiate this activity to have each letter in the word on the same color block or mixed up.

11 ~ Typing Spelling Words & Tablet Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

Students are able to type their words on the keyboard or tablet before writing them in the box or speech bubble.

12 ~ Hopscotch Grid

fun spelling homework ideas

Here is another activity to do either inside or outside.  Outside, you can draw a large hopscotch board.  Inside I usually write the words on pieces of paper and organize them in a way to resemble a hopscotch board.  Students can toss a bean bag or a crumbled piece of paper to a word.  Hopping to the word using the board, the student must spell the word that their object landed on before hopping back.

13 ~ Flashlight Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

I love (and so do my students) our “Flashlight Friday” moments.  We use our flashlights to read in the dark and now I found another activity to use for all my flashlights! Students can begin by tracing the words with their flashlights first.  Then they can go to a blank space and “write” their words on the wall.

14 ~ Spelling Memory Game

fun spelling homework ideas

Played as a typical memory game, where students have to flip over two cards at a time until they receive a match.  However, this time it is with their spelling words.  I like to have my students create their own cards for extra practice writing their words.  They write them in two blocks and then cut out their cards to play in pairs.

15 ~ Spelling Relay Races

One of many on this list that is in my “favorites” category!  The students enjoy this game because it is played in two teams.  In a bucket, at the end of a table, all the letter tiles are placed.  One person at a time from each team must run to the end of the table and grab ONE letter tile.  Once they run back and place the tile on the table, the next student goes to grab the next tile or letter in the word.  The team continues until the entire word is spelled.

16 ~ Sign Language Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

Students are able to learn a little bit about sign language with this awesome resource!  This activity introduces students to ASL and the alphabet.  By spelling their spelling words they are able to sign each letter as they go.  Once they finished the word, they are able to check off the box before moving on.  This activity could easily be individual, pairs, small group or whole group!

17 ~ Spelling Go-Fish

fun spelling homework ideas

Remember those cards that I had my students make back in #14’s Memory Game?  Well, I have another use for them!  Spelling Go-Fish!  Another student favorite!  Students have a select number of cards in their hands (e.g. 5).  Played as a typical game of “Go-Fish”, students ask their partner if they have a spelling word that they have in their hand.  I have them say the word, spell it, then say it again in the question.  “Do you have sure?”  “S-U-R-E” “Sure?”.  The partner replies either “Yes/No”, “I do/do not have sure, s-u-r-e, sure”.  If they don’t have the card the student needs to pick from the pile of other spelling words.  The game continues until all matches are collected.

18 ~ Jump & Spell

fun spelling homework ideas

A great spring activity! While outside write all the letters of the alphabet in chalk.  Provide a student a word and they must jump from letter to letter spelling the word.

19 ~ Yoga Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

I absolutely love to incorporate movement breaks throughout the school day.  Not only for myself, but for my students as well.  For this activity have your students write the spelling word in the box and when they are completed, they should try the pose for each word.

20 ~ Dot Paint

fun spelling homework ideas

Using a Q-tip or a Bingo dabber, students can “write” or “paint” their spelling words.  To start, students may have to trace the word letter by letter using the Q-tip or dabber.  After some practice, students should be able to “write” the word without the visual prompt.

21 ~ Lego Activity

fun spelling homework ideas

I am pulling out the legos again from #10!  This time instead of spelling block by block, the students need to be a bit more creative! As Creative Family Fun shows,  on a flat piece of a lego board, students must use blocks to spell the word on the flat.  The thin lego pieces work the best for this activity.

22 ~ Spelling Exercises

Think of a Gross-Motor “Simon Says” Game!  Just include your spelling list and some basic exercises!  Have students spell their words while working out.  “Jumping Jacks to spell C-H-A-M-P” or “Squats to “P-L-A-N-T”.  This activity also pairs well with Education to the Core’s Spelling Bee Center Resource .

fun spelling homework ideas

23 ~ Body Letters

Make the letters of each word with your body as you spell the word aloud.

24 ~ Vowel / Consonant Cubes

fun spelling homework ideas

Students are able to write their words in each of the boxes.  Next, color all the vowels red and consonants blue.  As an extension activity students can re-create their words using red and blue unifix-connect cubes . Have them pass it to a friend to see if they can guess which word they spelled just by looking at the pattern.  This is also a great teaching tool to show how blends and digraphs are going to be two blue blocks together.  If there two reds together – a vowel team.  Blue, red, blue, red…probably in most cases, going to be a long vowel silent e.

25 ~ Write the Room Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

Placing the spelling words throughout the room.  Students can take their clipboards and recording sheet to walk around the room recording the words they find.

8 Fun Ways to Teach Spelling

fun spelling homework ideas

Blog category: Education Date: 23 October 2017

fun spelling homework ideas

Student engagement is essential for any learning experience. In order to keep your students active and attentive during spelling lessons, it’s important to mix-up your teaching methods.

Discover how to make learning spelling fun with these eight spelling exercises designed to make learning (and teaching) a blast.

1. Create rhymes and raps using spelling

Part of teaching students new spelling words is to engage them beyond the classroom. Using rhymes and raps to help students better understand the words that they’re trying to learn is a fun way to achieve this. Fun rhymes that incorporate spelling can stick in the mind like catchy tunes that you hear on the radio.

Students make associations between words that rhyme, and the addition of rhythms and raps means students are more likely to start humming them outside of class. This strategy also makes committing them to memory easier.

2. Create a spelling wall in the classroom

At the beginning of each week hang some butchers paper from one of the walls in the classroom and create a learning and spelling hub. Encourage students to write down words that they learn on the butchers paper. Students can also go up anytime and practice spelling different words for the week. You can also use additional materials like coloured crayons or markers, and even encourage students to draw pictures to associate with the words.

3. Make a fun crossword

Crosswords present an excellent opportunity to make learning spelling interesting, as they involve a more active type of learning than passive review techniques. Solving a crossword involves several useful skills including spelling, vocabulary and reasoning, and it helps kids to think about word definitions as well. Crosswords also have the advantage of engaging  different learning styles .

You can give the crossword to individuals or break students up into small groups, encouraging them to work together and learn collaboratively. Filling in the blanks can also give students a sense of accomplishment, and completed crosswords can be hung on the classroom walls to recognise achievements.

4. Jumble word

fun spelling homework ideas

Using plastic magnetic letter shapes, first spell out the word, then scramble the letters into the pile and have the student assemble the word again. As they advance, you can start with the word jumbled, and even have them assemble words from a letter pile.

5. Use arts and crafts to encourage spelling

Many students learn better when they’re being creative. This is especially true for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Instead of using plain old pens and pencils to write out words, break out the art supplies and allows students to use paints, markers, crayons and other colourful creative implements to spell out words. This type of learning can also be a fun group activity as well, with students taking turns to write and spell out words. Younger students also love to use playdough to build each letter in their focus spelling words.

6. Create a game of word bingo

Everyone loves a game of bingo! You can adapt this popular game to create fun and interactive spelling lessons that the whole class will love. Here’s how:

  • Write the weekly list of spelling words on the board.
  • Provide each student with a  blank spelling bingo card .
  • Have each student write a different word from the list in each square on the bingo card. Then rub the list of words off the board.
  • Call out a word from the list and ask students to raise their hands if they have that word on their card.
  • The fastest student to raise their hand has to spell the word on the board. If they spell it correctly they get to cross the word off their card.
  • The first student to cross off 5 words wins.

It’s important to incentivise a game like spelling bingo to ensure that all students participate. This game can also be completed in groups, which may encourage more active involvement.

7. Word heads

Remember the game celebrity heads, when you put the names of a celebrity on each person’s head and you try to work out who you are by asking questions? The same game can be played using spelling words. Students have to figure out which word they are by asking a bunch of questions with yes/no answers like:

  • Am I a verb?
  • Do I start with a vowel?
  • Am I an animal?

Once they guess the word, they then have to spell it aloud. Word heads is fun because children play together to uncover their own solutions, encouraging collaboration and out-of-the-box thinking.

8. Build a word train

Have students spell out words on small cards and assemble them together based on certain rules. A couple you can try:

  • Form a sentence: Each follow on word must help build a sentence
  • Matching letters: The first letter of the next word must match the last letter of the previous word

Engage the entire class with fun spelling lessons

With so many different methods to teach your students to spell, there’s a great opportunity to get creative and encourage participation from the whole class. Experiment with these games (and maybe make some of your own) and discover which work best for your students. With so many to chose from, every lesson can be an adventure.

Spelling Menus For All Year

3-5 · All Freebies · PK-2

Hey teacher friends! Hope everyone is fantastic today!

I was doing some updating yesterday and wanted to freshen up a super popular freebie: my Differentiated Spelling Homework Menu!

Spelling Menus For All Year

I used this menu in third grade (though it could be adapted easily by other grade levels as well), and the students, parents, and administrators loved it! I did too, because I was able to only grade spelling homework once a week, rather than a daily assignment each day.

By assigning the homework on Monday for the rest of the week, it allows families who might have sports or family emergencies to work on the homework throughout the week when it is most convenient for them. A great many parents have verbally shared with me how they loved this option.

Students like it better because they have a choice. They all have to complete the same amount of points {or that can be differentiated as well if needed}, but each child can choose how many assignments he or she needs to complete in order to get to the required level of points each week. And they are able to change it up and choose different activities whenever they like.

Spelling Menus For All Year

I loved it because I was able to grade once a week and also to see the creativity and choices come alive in the work students were turning in. I also didn’t have to run nightly homework copies – or tear out pages in a workbook! Students supplied their work on paper from home. Of course, you will always have a couple who “halfway” do the work – or forget and don’t turn it in at all. That happens though with nightly homework, so the same consequences should result.

I love menus for differentiating and allowing student choice with guidelines in place. The freebie menu packet below comes with a basic plain template with no graphics, along with 12 other monthly “themed” pages, in case you want to change things up a bit to liven it up.

Hopefully your students will love the choice factor as much as mine did! Feel free to pass along the link for this page to other colleagues in your school who also might like a change from the usual spelling routine.

Spelling Menus For All Year

Thanks so much and happy homework-ing!
