Using CUBES Math Strategies in the Classroom with 5 Adorable Posters

CUBES math strategies

The education world is constantly adding new acronyms! One that deserves some recognition is the CUBES math strategies. These strategies are perfect for kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade students. The concept will have your students solving math problems with confidence and flair. If you aren’t sure what these strategies are, I’ll show you and provide you with some exciting posters to use as well.

CUBES math strategies

What is CUBES?

CUBES is not just another ordinary math strategy; it’s an acronym that stands for Circle the numbers, Underline the question, Box the keywords, Evaluate, and Solve! By using these CUBES math strategies, students will be able to solve any math problem placed in front of them.

Why is CUBES important?

Now, you might be thinking, “Why should I bring CUBES into my classroom?” Well, CUBES is more than just a fun acronym—it’s an essential tool that helps build problem-solving skills, encourages critical thinking, and boosts overall math proficiency in our young learners. Here are some of the reasons it is so important.

  • Guiding Their Focus: CUBES guides students in breaking down math problems step by step. By circling the numbers and underlining the question, they learn to identify the key parts of the problem, helping them stay focused on what needs to be solved.
  • Keyword Power: Boxing the keywords gives students clarity! By identifying and highlighting the important terms or actions in a problem, students gain a better understanding of what the problem is truly asking.
  • Finding the Right Strategy: With CUBES, students learn to evaluate the problem and decide on the most suitable strategy. Whether it’s counting, drawing pictures, using manipulatives, or using number bonds, they’ll have tons of strategies to choose from!
  • Simple Solutions: Finally, CUBES empowers students to solve the problem step by step, leading them to that “aha!” moment when the math magic happens! From addition and subtraction to multiplication and division, CUBES encourages a systematic approach that boosts accuracy and confidence.

Are your students struggling to tackle word problems? Are they getting confused about what steps are necessary to take? A good problem-solving strategy is essential for students to master tricky word problems. While this may come naturally for some students, other students may benefit from the handy acronym, CUBES! So what does CUBES stand for exactly?

  • Circle the numbers
  • Underline the question
  • Box in the key words
  • Eliminate unnecessary information
  • Solve and show your work

How to Make the Most of Your CUBES Problem Solving Set

  • Print the posters and display them in your classroom for students to reference when doing independent work.
  • Print the bookmarks and place them in your math centers as a reminder for students.
  • Print the bookmarks and distribute them to students to keep at their desks. Invite students to pull out their bookmarks when working on math word problems.

We’ve also come up with bonus ways to turn posters into interactive tools that really make your lessons stick!

🖍️ Turn this poster and bookmark set into a coloring page by printing it in black and white.

📝 Create a fill-in-the-blank worksheet by removing selections of text.

📂 Place copies in students’ homework folders for reference.

💻 Provide posters as digital resources for virtual students.

🧠 Test students’ memories by showing them the poster, then hiding it and having them tell you what they remember.

City Description

Novokuznetsk, a dynamic city in Kemerovo Oblast (Kuzbass) in southwestern Siberia, Russia, is the second-largest city in the region, following the administrative center, Kemerovo. As of the 2021 Census, Novokuznetsk has a population of 537,480, reflecting a slight decline from previous decades, with 547,904 recorded in the 2010 Census and 599,947 in the 1989 Soviet Census.

Novokuznetsk’s history dates back to its founding in 1618 as Kuznetsk, later renamed Stalinsk in 1931 in honor of Joseph Stalin, and finally adopting its current name in 1961. The city’s name, meaning ‘new smith’s,’ reflects its deep-rooted industrial heritage. Novokuznetsk became a significant metallurgical center, especially during the Soviet era, when it played a crucial role in the industrialization of the region.

Geographically, Novokuznetsk is located in the Kuznetsk Basin, an area rich in coal and mineral resources. This strategic location has greatly influenced its development as an industrial hub. The city lies along the Tom River, a tributary of the Ob River, which has historically facilitated transportation and trade.

Culturally, Novokuznetsk offers a blend of historical and modern influences. The city boasts several cultural institutions, including theaters, museums, and libraries. The Novokuznetsk Drama Theatre, established in 1931, is one of the oldest and most prominent cultural landmarks. The city also hosts numerous cultural festivals and events, reflecting its vibrant community life.

Novokuznetsk’s human resources are characterized by a skilled workforce, particularly in the metallurgical and coal industries. The city’s educational institutions, including Novokuznetsk State Institute of Further Training (part of the Siberian Federal University), play a significant role in providing higher education and vocational training, supporting the local economy.

Economically, Novokuznetsk is a major player in the metallurgical and coal mining industries. The city’s industrial landscape is dominated by large enterprises such as the West-Siberian Metallurgical Plant (part of Evraz Group) and the Novokuznetsk Aluminum Plant. These industries drive the local economy, providing employment and contributing significantly to the region’s GDP.

Novokuznetsk’s urban infrastructure includes well-developed transportation networks, with railway lines connecting it to other major cities in Russia. The city also has a public transportation system comprising buses, trams, and trolleybuses, facilitating mobility for its residents.

In summary, Novokuznetsk is a city of significant historical, cultural, and economic importance in southwestern Siberia. Its rich industrial heritage, strategic geographical location, and vibrant cultural scene make it a key urban center in the Kemerovo Oblast. With a strong industrial base and a skilled workforce, Novokuznetsk continues to play a vital role in Russia’s industrial landscape.

Struggling with math story problems cubes to the rescue.

If your class struggles with solving math word problems, you’ve come to the right place.

Using the CUBES or CUBED problem-solving strategy for math story problems will help your students focus on the steps they need to solve word problems.

CUBES posters for math problem solving

We love math story problems!

Everyone does love word problems – right?

I get it. they can be difficult for students, and some teachers aren’t sure how to help. That’s tough.

Math story problems key word posters

I like to use the CUBES/CUBED method.

I introduce the CUBES/CUBED math strategy early in the school year. With younger students, it’s important to use controlled math story problems as they learn the procedure. By controlled math word problems, I mean basic problems that will probably result in success for students. It’s important that students experience success to build their confidence and motivation to learn.

As we move deeper into the school year, we encounter more challenging, multi-step word problems. Depending on your math series, you may encounter the “Throw it all at you” style of word problems. These word problems jam tons of overwhelming information into one problem. You know, the problems with lots of steps and lots of words.

The “Throw it all at you” problems bring students and assignments to a screeching halt. Often, my students became totally bogged down by the multi-step problems requiring organized thinking that they hadn’t yet developed.

Student reference bookmark featuring CUBES story problem strategy

CUBES Math story problem strategy

Students need a strategy and organized method of approaching these math story problems to avoid the overwhelming feeling of fear and dread. Without a plan, students just pull the numbers out of the word problem and add them together. We’ve all been there, right? When students didn’t know whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide, they randomly picked one.

Below is a bulletin board using posters from the  CUBES Strategy Posters  for solving math story problems . Bulletin boards and teacher-created anchor charts make great reference tools for students.

cubes problem solving poster

Teachers can choose their favorite method.

The more traditional CUBES method uses these steps:

1. C ircle the numbers 2. U nderline the question 3. B ox the keywords 4. E liminate what you don’t need 5. S olve and Label  ( I added “label” because we all require it – don’t we? )

Or you can choose the newer CUBED method, which stands for:

1. C ircle the numbers 2. U nderline the question 3. B ox the keywords 4. E liminate what you don’t need 5. D raw a picture (which is often seen in the Common Core State Standards)

CUBES – or CUBED – Poster Resources

Whichever method you prefer, you’re covered because there are poster sets for both versions.

Math story problem solving strategy posters featuring CUBES

All of the posters in the picture above are included. In addition, you receive mini-posters so each student can have their own copy. The mini-posters can be laminated, handed out to students, and attached to their math folders or binders to use as a reference tool at home.

CUBES math word problems mini reference cards for students

A basic, smaller-sized poster set is also included for smaller class displays.

It was previously known as Kuznetsk until 1931, and as Stalinsk until 1961.

Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack ostrog (fort) on the Tom River , it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog ( Кузне́цкий острог ). [2] It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. [3] Kuznetsk ( Кузне́цк ) was granted town status in 1689. [3] It was here that Fyodor Dostoevsky married his first wife, Maria Isayeva in 1857. [13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .

Within the framework of administrative divisions , Novokuznetsk serves as the administrative center of Novokuznetsky District , even though it is not a part of it. [1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [15] As a municipal division , Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated as the Novokuznetsky Urban Okrug . [15] [16]
