Theses and dissertations have been published at Virginia Tech since 1903. They have been submitted electronically since 1996 ( ETDs ), with most of these freely available and searchable online from VTechWorks - ETDs . Please visit the Research Guide on ETDs  page for more information. The Virginia Tech Libraries owns few theses or dissertations published at other colleges and universities; you can obtain many of these documents via Interlibrary Loan . Note : If an author(s) have placed an embargo on their theses or dissertations for a period of time, access to these will be limited.

You can also find Virginia Tech dissertations and theses from the  library’s homepage , or from the  Discovery Search  page, by searching for the thesis/dissertation by the title, or by the OCLC number ( if indexed ). If available online, it will be the first few results. Click on the thesis/dissertation title to view the item information and for access options (such as VTechWorks links).

From the  Discovery Advanced Search  page, you may search the thesis/dissertation title using the “ Title ” search filter, or use the “ Title ” AND “ Author/Creator ” search filters to find the Virginia Tech electronic theses or dissertations ( ETDs ) by the title AND author. Change the " Material type " option from " All items " to " Dissertations ". From the results page, click on the thesis/dissertation title to view the item information and for access options (such as VTechWorks links).

If there is a “ Get VText ” link, this will direct you to the item information, with the “ Request item through Interlibrary Loan ” button, to request the item through  Interlibrary Loan .

Physical/print copies of Virginia Tech thesis or dissertations can be found in much the same way, as indicated above. Click on the thesis/dissertation title to view the item information, item location, availability, and a " Sign In " link for request options.

To limit to documents from particular departments, include the department name in quotes. Note that many departments have changed their names over the years, so you will need to search each variation of name.

To search for thesis and dissertations held by other libraries, from the initial results page, under “ Tweak you results ”: select the " Expand My Results " option.

For information about the  Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) ,  ProQuest Theses and Dissertations Global (PQTDG) , other open access repositories, and international thesis and dissertations repositories, such as the  Center for Research Libraries (CRL) , see our  guide on theses and dissertations  for more information.

Scholarly Communication

many books lying open together

Scholarly Communication is a dynamic landscape, and we are continually evolving. Many scholarly communications activities have spun-off into their own departments, such as VT Publishing and Digital Imaging and Preservation Services, and Digital Library Development. Our focus is on supporting the creation and dissemination of scholarship. We promote public access to (i.e., open) scholarly communication.

VTechWorks is the online repository for the scholarly work of Virginia Tech faculty, students, and staff, and administrative and historical university documents. VTechWorks has open educational resources, journal articles, books, conference papers, slide presentations, technical reports, working papers, patents, administrative documents, videos, images, and much more. ETDs (electronic theses and dissertations) approved by the VT Graduate School are available through VTechWorks too. Faculty can deposit items through EFARS , the university’s Electronic Faculty Activity Reporting System. Google indexes VTechWorks but you can also search and browse full-text within the repository. Monthly data about VTechWorks usage and content is available at VTechWorks Stats .

We promote "open": in that the resources we host and help produce are available to the public. For example, OER (open educational resources) are publicly available instructional materials. See our open textbooks .

Due to our long experience with curating digital resources, we have expertise with copyright , fair use, and Creative Commons licenses . We promote identifiers for people (e.g., ORCID ) and things (e.g., DOI – Digital Object Identifier, ISSN – International Standard Serial/Book Number, etc.).

VT Libraries offer an open access (OA) fund to subsidize article processing charges (APCs) for scholarly, peer-reviewed articles accepted by OA or hybrid OA journals. Everyone in the Virginia Tech community (i.e., students, staff, and faculty) is eligible for OASF support. Begin by reviewing the  VT OASF Guidelines  and then completing the  Open Access Subvention Fund request form .

Open@VT blog shares many scholarly communication activities, including Open Education Week, Open Data Day, as well as new collections available in VTechWorks.

The Libraries’ sister repositories include VTechData , Special Collections , and others . In addition, we continue to advance scholarly communications through digital libraries development and refinement (e.g., video captioning ).

To take advantage of our services and resources, contact any of the Scholarly Communication staff .

VT ETDs are migrating into VTech Works! 21,243 will move from the ETD Database to join the >1,300 most current ETDs already inVTechWorks. Virginia Tech has been a worldwide leader in ETD initiatives for more than 20 years. On January 1, 1997 VT was the first university to require ETDs. Our mission is to preserve and provide access to the research and scholarship of Virginia Tech's graduate students. ETDs give students the opportunity to prepare, submit, review, and publish electronic works such as book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations. We support supplimentary files in media formats such as csv (data), audio, video, 3-D images, and others. VT's ETD policies, procedures, and software are openly available from this web site. The guidelines that apply to Virginia Tech's graduate students as ETD authors can be found at  etd.vt.edu  and the Graduate School.
