Who He is: I live in a populous area of Chittagong city. There are about five thousand people in the ward where I live. All of them are my neighbors. I have a good relationship with them. We respect and care for each other. Among all my neighbors one is very special to me. His name is Shahabuddin Ahmed. He is a school teacher . He teaches in B. M. High School which is situated in our ward. He is about forty years old. He is a married person and a father of two children — one son and one daughter. His wife is also a teacher of the same school. I have known him for about ten years.

Qualities of a Good Neighbor: All neighbors are not good. A good neighbor should possess some good qualities. He must be sympathetic, compassionate, frank, honest , polite, and well-behaved. He must have tolerance and fellow-feeling. He should also be honest, sincere, and trustworthy.

Why I Like Him: Mr. Shahabuddin Ahmed is a very polite and courteous person. We exchange greetings whenever we meet. He is very hospitable. On different religious occasions and festivals, my family goes to visit his house. His wife prepares different delicious dishes and entertains us. They also come to our house and we try our best to entertain them. In this way, a strong bond has been created between his family and mine. He is reliable and trustworthy. He is also generous and compassionate. In my need, I can rely on him. At those moments of emergency, he comes forward to help me with all his might. Once my father had to undergo a major operation. I had lived in my new house for about a month when I finally had the chance to meet my neighbour, Mr. Jones.

Until that moment, our interactions had been limited to glimpses of him here and there.

I might be in the kitchen, washing dishes, and catch sight of him tending to his flowers in his garden or moving something in the back.

Another time, I saw a fleeting image of him through the window as I left for work in the morning, a glimpse of his face as he moved around his house.

I knew he was there, but we had never spoken.

Then, one Saturday, as I stood in my overgrown garden contemplating the need to mow the lawn, a sense of shame washed over me. All the other neighbours in our tidy little cul-de-sac had beautifully manicured lawns, while mine had grown unruly.

The problem was my old lawnmower.

It had been a hand-me-down from my brother-in-law and had already been on its last legs when it was passed to me. Now, it was completely defunct.

I had tried to revive it, but it refused to cooperate. Just as I had resolved to tackle the overgrown grass and restore some order to my garden, my lawnmower had given up the ghost.

“Having some engine trouble there?” a friendly voice called out.

I looked around and saw a face peering over the fence.

It was my neighbour.

He had a kind, friendly expression and a shock of white hair on his head. A big smile beaming down at me.

“Hello there,” I said. I waved my hand at the broken lawnmower. “Yes, this old thing has seen better days. I think it’s time to get a new one.”

“I think we all reach that point eventually,” said my neighbour and laughed. “Would you like to borrow mine?”

I’d seen his shiny green lawnmower before, as he diligently tended to his immaculate garden. I hesitated for a moment before shaking my head.

“Thank you, that’s very kind, but I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“No trouble at all,” he said. “I’ll bring it over.”

Before I could protest further, Mr. Jones disappeared behind the fence.

Within a minute or so, he reappeared in my driveway, dragging his state-of-the-art lawnmower behind him. He plugged it into the extension cable I had running from my kitchen window and gave me a quick demonstration on how to use it.

Soon enough, I was skilfully manoeuvring the mower across my lawn, leaving it perfectly trimmed.

My neighbour introduced himself as George. I told him my name, and we found ourselves chatting about all kinds of things.

George was living alone in his house.

“My wife died a few years ago,” he explained. “And I have a daughter. But she lives far away. She has her own life and her own family now.”

We also found that we shared a passion for cricket, a sport that set me apart from most of my other friends, who were either football or rugby fans.

I often found myself down the pub with one or two friends who wanted to watch an important football match playing live on the TV.

I just didn’t understand football. So it was nice to meet someone that liked cricket.

We finished doing the garden, and I invited him in for a cup of tea.

After that day, it was like we became firm friends.

George and I spent many times at each other’s homes, enjoying tea and listening to the cricket on the radio.

One day, George came to my house, looking slightly embarrassed.

“I’ve run into some trouble with my kitchen water heater,” he confessed. “Could you take a look?”

I explained my background in electrics and offered to help. It turned out to be a simple issue, requiring no replacement parts, and I had a solution readily available in my garage.

Our friendship was an unexpected and unique one. Despite the age difference, I felt a strong bond with George. It was refreshing to engage in meaningful conversations about life’s various topics.

Then, one morning, as I was leaving for work, I noticed a car pulling up outside George’s house. A woman stepped out of the car, and it was evident that she was his daughter. Her striking resemblance to George was unmistakable.

Thinking it was a good opportunity to introduce myself, I approached her.

“Hello,” I called out. “You must be George’s daughter.”

She looked over with a faint smile.

“Yes, I am. Just here to sort through some of my father’s belongings.”

A P olice O fficer who wishes to talk to the narrator.

The Situation

After the narrator told George the neighbour’s daughter that he had met her father several times, she became very alarmed.

Maybe a man broke into the house and claimed to be her deceased father.

Or maybe the narrator is trying to play some very unkind trick on her.

Either way, she wants to get to the end of it.

So she called the police.

Now, a police officer is talking to the narrator about what he saw and to describe the man he saw.

You just want to understand what is going on here.

All you know is that a person living next door to an empty house, claims to have seen the previous owner and spoken to him. But this man died a year ago.

So what exactly did the narrator see?

And who did he talk to?

The Narrator

You are very confused.

You now doubt what and who you spoke to.

You realise now that George is no longer alive.

So who exactly did you speak to?

Now you have to present all your story and what happened to the police.

And you don’t want them to think you are crazy.

What can you say?

What story can you tell them?

In pairs, take some time to prepare your role play.

When you are ready, stand in front of the class and perform your role play.

In the class, all the students should give feedback on every role play they see.

Your teacher can also give some feedback too.

This is a creative writing exercise.

You are going to write a short story. It is a continuation of the story you read at the beginning of the lesson.

The title of the story is:

The Old Man Next Door

In this exercise, you are going to take on the role of the narrator in the story at the beginning of the lesson.

You have spoken to George’s daughter. And she notified the police and you spoke to them too.

Now you are alone in your house.

You feel strange about the events that you experienced. And the fact that you are sure you were speaking to a living, breathing human being!

As you sit alone in your house with your thoughts, you hear a noise from the house next door.

You go to your kitchen and look out the window.

And you see George in his own garden.

What do you do?

Do you go outside and talk to him?

Or do you stay inside your house?

Maybe you call the police…

But what could you possibly tell them?

Or maybe George decides to pay you a visit.

Did you lock the back door?

Think about all the possible events that could take place.

Now write your story.

When you have finished writing your story, stand in front of the class and read it out loud to all your classmates.

They can give you some feedback on your writing.

Or you can hand it in to your teacher for a review.

Astrakhan Oblast - Overview

Astrakhan Oblast is a federal subject of Russia, part of the Southern Federal District, situated in the Caspian Lowlands where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. Astrakhan is the capital city of the region.

The population of Astrakhan Oblast is about 989,400 (2022), the area - 49,024 sq. km.

History of Astrakhan Oblast

In ancient times, the territory of the Astrakhan region was crossed by trade routes of the Persians and the Arabs. In the 8th-10th centuries, the territory belonged to the Khazar Khanate. There is a hypothesis that Itil, the capital of the Khazar Khanate, was located on this territory. It was destroyed by Prince Svyatoslav in 965.

Later, Polovtsy settled on this land. In the first half of the 13th century, the Mongol-Tatars came to the area. After them, Tatars of the Astrakhan Khanate and Kazakhs became the main population of the region.

In 1556, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the Astrakhan Khanate was annexed to the Russian state and ceased to exist. Astrakhan krai became the southeastern military outpost of Russia. In particular, in 1569, the Turks unsuccessfully besieged the fortress of Astrakhan.

In the 17th century, trade, fishing and salt industries developed in the region. In the middle of the 17th century, the uprising of Stepan Razin took place on the territory of Astrakhan region. In 1722, near the mouth of the Kutum River, a shipyard called the Astrakhan Admiralty was built. In the 1730s-1740s, the processing of silk and cotton began here.

Astrakhan Oblast was created in 1943. The region gained its current borders in 1957.

Astrakhan Oblast is located in the south-east of the East European Plain within the Caspian Lowlands. It is an area of deserts and semi-deserts. Astrakhan oblast borders on the Volgograd region in the north, the Republic of Kalmykia in the west and Kazakhstan in the east.

It is located on the border between Europe and Asia, the Volga River gives access to five seas. The main cities of the region are Astrakhan (518,700), Akhtubinsk (35,500), Znamensk (25,700), Harabali (17,100).

The climate of Astrakhan Oblast is continental, dry. Winters are with little snow, frequent thaws and unstable snow cover; summers are hot. January is the coldest month, the average temperature is minus 10-20 degrees Celsius. July is the hottest month - the average temperature is plus 35-45 degrees Celsius.

According to the 2010 census, the ethnic composition of the local population is the following: Russians (67.6%), Kazakhs (16.3%) and Tatars (6.6%). Orthodox Christianity is the main religion. However, Muslims also make up a significant group of the population (more than 20%). Historically, this province was a place where Kazakhs and Tatars settled. The largest Kazakh community in Russia lives in the Astrakhan region.

Astrakhan Oblast - Economy

Natural resources of the region include natural gas, oil, salt, gypsum.

The industrial complex of Astrakhan, the economic center of the region, includes shipbuilding, pulp and paper industry, fish processing industry. The leading industries are fuel industry, mechanical engineering, power engineering, food industry. Astrakhan gas condensate field, the largest in the European part of Russia, is located in the area. Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant produces gas for cars, diesel and boiler fuel.

Agricultural lands make up more than 3.4 million hectares - the cultivation of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, cucumbers, carrots, beets, onions, cabbage, watermelons. Rice is traditionally grown along the Volga. The leading branch of livestock is sheep breeding.

The region stretches for over 400 km in the form of a narrow stripe on both sides of the Volga-Akhtubinsk flood-lands. Flooded for a long time, the territory of the delta serves as spawning-ground for such fish as sturgeon, stellate sturgeon, white sturgeon and others.

Astrakhan Oblast is a region steeped in the history of Central Asia. Before the arrival of Russian power, this area was at times ruled by the Jewish Khazar Khaganate, the Golden Horde , and the Astrakhan Khanate (centered on the present day city). In 1556 Ivan the Terrible conquered the region and annexed most of its territory at a time when Russian-allied Kalmyks were attacking and displacing the Muslim Tatars of the region. In 1580, having seen off Ottoman challenges to Russian rule, Russia constructed Astrakhan's magnificent Kremlin, which is a mix of traditional Russian and Baroque styles. Astrakhan's nature as a pivotal region for Central Asia continued when Peter the Great established a major shipbuilding yard on the Caspian Sea and established the region as the base for Russian expansion into the great Khanates of Khiva, Samarkand, and Bukhara, located in present day Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan , and Uzbekistan .

Today Astrakhan Oblast is a relatively sleepy, sparsely populated region near the confluence of the Volga River and the Caspian Sea, notable for its large gas reserves. The region retains sizeable Kazakh and Tatar minorities.

Despite its multicultural past, nearly everyone in Astrakhan Oblast speaks Russian as a first language.
