PhD opportunities

Our projects cover clinical psychology, cognition and cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience and robotics, developmental psychology, forensic psychology, social, health and environmental psychology and systems neuroscience.

Some of our projects come with specific funding (eg, from a research council or Centre for Doctoral Training) to cover your tuition fees and living expenses. If you apply and are selected for one of these projects, you will be automatically awarded the funding.

If a project does not come with specific funding, you may be able to apply for a scholarship . Once you have found a project you want to apply for, find out how to apply .

PhD or MPhil?

You can choose to study for a PhD or an MPhil. PhD and MPhil degrees differ in duration and in the extent of your research work.

For a PhD, your research work makes a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding in your chosen field.
For an MPhil, your work is an independent piece of research but in less depth than for a PhD. You’ll graduate with the degree title Master of Philosophy. You might be able to change to a PhD while you study for an MPhil.

How can i fund my course, funded projects and scholarships.

Our aim is to ensure that every student who wants to study with us is able to despite financial barriers, so that we continue to attract talented and unique individuals. If any part of your funding, at any time, is through USA federal Direct Loan funds, you will be registered on a separate version of this degree which does not include the possibility of distance learning which is prohibited under USA federal regulations. International students: £26,250 per year for full-time students

Empirical research costs

On top of your PhD fees and living costs, you may also need to cover some research and training costs, relevant to your research project. These costs will depend on your research topic and training needs, but may include: - travel (to archives, collections or scientific facilities) - a laptop - overseas fieldwork costs (travel and accommodation, and language training) - conference costs (travel, registration fees and accommodation) - laboratory consumables and workshop materials - participant costs - transcription or translation costs - open-access publication costs. If you been awarded a scholarship from one of the UK Research Councils, from the University of Sussex, or from another source, this will typically cover these types of costs. You’ll receive details of how to claim this additional funding. You’ll start the ‘Health psychology placement’ unit with a series of sessions designed to prepare you for your 16-week placement, which will take place in the summer.

Compulsory units

Advanced research methods for applied psychology, health psychology approaches, health psychology interventions, health psychology placement.

You’ll continue your preparation for the 16-week placement during your ‘Health psychology placement’ unit sessions.

You will complete your 16-week placement during this period.

Health psychology dissertation

This is one of the only BPS-accredited courses to offer a 16-week work placement.

You’ll be allocated a placement within an academic, public health or health-related setting. During this, you’ll work on a piece of research that addresses an actual challenge. This will allow you to use real-world evidence and experience alongside your knowledge of health psychology theories, models and approaches.

Your placement will take place during the summer (typically May to August). You’ll be paired with a placement supervisor and a dissertation supervisor - the latter will be a member of our health psychology team – to ensure you are supported throughout.

In addition to gaining invaluable employment experience, you’ll improve your understanding of how health psychology can be applied in different contexts.

As with all of our placement opportunities, these change from year to year, and we cannot guarantee specific roles or locations. If you have any specific questions on the placement that forms part of this course, please reach out to the relevant placement officer .

Learning and assessment

You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject.

You are expected to spend approximately 35-40 hours per week studying, with around 8 hours of this being structured classes.

This will be made up of a combination of lectures, practical sessions, and tutorials. You will work as an individual and as part of small groups.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications.

You should have a bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:1 or above.

To apply for this course you should have an undergraduate degree in psychology. The degree should be recognised by the British Psychological Society as providing Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC).

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

In your application, you will need to provide a maximum 500 word personal statement which should:

(a) show a clear understanding of health psychology as a subject, why you are interested in studying on this particular course and what skills and interests you hope to develop over the duration of the course.

(b) outline your research experience to date. This could include key research related assignments that you have completed such as your undergraduate dissertation project, or any research posts you have held. Please explain the skills and knowledge you have gained from your research experience that you would bring to the MSc Health Psychology programme.

(c) describe any other practical experience that you have which you feel is relevant to the field of health psychology and what you have learned from this experience.

If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements.

English language requirements

IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all components
The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 69 with no less than 62 in any element

We are looking to recruit a dynamic Head of SEND Strategic to join our BCP Council Children’s Services Department. You will play a central role in our SEND transformation and improvement journey, which has significantly improved over the last 12 months. The position is based in BCP Council and you will be responsible for aspects of the Strategic SEND services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

About the service Significant improvements have been made within BCP’s SEND Service over the last year; it is an exciting time to join and contribute to our improvement journey. Over the last year we have been working closely with our staff and listening to partners, parents and carers and have created and launched a new SEND Service Structure. Through our new service structure, we have separated out the statutory operational aspects of SEND and require a Head of SEND Strategic to lead our improvement work. A key focus will be to lead and support our drive for greater inclusion in mainstream settings in BCP place for our statutory 0-25 provision.

Locally we provide support to over 4,000 children and young people with Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans and with a further 7,552 accessing SEN Support. A key element of our development will be to develop and improve our relationships with the 98 schools in BCP alongside our ability to listen to and design SEN improvements meeting the needs of parents and carers. The ongoing co-production with early years settings. children, parents, carers and schools is at the heart of our work, as we need to make further improvements on our Inclusion work with schools and wider settings. Finally, a key focus is our new Belonging and Inclusion strategy, which at its heart is the development of the Educational Psychology Service which will deliver a number of changes through traded work.

About the role The role will focus on introducing our system wide inclusion approach with expertise in integrated pathways with early prevention being at the heart of the system. You will be responsible for the wider governance arrangements for SEND including implementation of our new robust quality assurance framework.

You will be a systems leader, working in partnership with health commissioners and providers to address key areas of demand and earlier support. You will be responsible for managing key service budgets. You must be able to work collaboratively across the Children’s Services department and in wider partnership with EY, schools, SEN provision and of course, our parents and carers. You will be responsible for driving forward further improvements and partnership working and leading co-production projects with a distinct focus on the development of our Local Offer. Relevant experience in similar roles is essential. You will need to have significant experience of leading Education Psychology Services and hold BPS accreditation.

Essential requirements of this position include:

The position requires a degree in a relevant subject, a BPS accredited degree in psychology.
Post-graduate management qualification or equivalent experience, and substantial senior leadership experience.
Experience and capability to plan, strategically implement and manage service transformation, policy change and quality assurance frameworks.
