Pollution had existed long before humans evolved. For instance, volcanic eruptions commonly pumped massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, causing acid rain. The greenhouse gas, ozone, forms from natural, photochemical reactions in the atmosphere.

However, significant levels of pollution occurred only after the Industrial Revolution, when untreated exhausts and toxic waste products were released into the environment. Air pollution was rampant, with thick, toxic smog covering most towns and cities. Water pollution affected many water bodies. Toxic substances leached into the soil, hampering the soil quality.

Today, there have been many measures to curb the effects of pollution, but its repercussions can still be observed. For instance, the land and sea ice near the poles have been decreasing at an alarming rate. This has led to the debate regarding climatic factors and their impact on our environment. There was a time when lead used to be added to motor fuel. This substance, combined with the world’s increasing demand for motor vehicles, caused a spike in air pollution. What made this air pollution more dangerous is the fact that the air had high levels of lead.

Lead is toxic and can cause a vast array of health problems. The most common illnesses are neurological in nature. Lead can also travel through the placenta, between a mother and her unborn child. Moreover, young children and infants are even more sensitive to lead. They can develop learning deficits, behavioural problems and also a low IQ.

Furthermore, some studies have arrived at a “lead-crime postulate”, where children who were exposed to high levels of lead were more likely to indulge in criminal activities. This correlation was made as to the crime rates during the 1980s, and early 1990s were rather high. Lead can also cause neurological effects on vertebrates and impair the reproductive capabilities of plants. More ominously, lead can be absorbed into the tissues of such organisms, and they can pass it on to us when we consume them.

Technological progress also brings newer forms of pollution. Radioactive pollution is one of the rarer types of pollution. This type of pollution occurs naturally as well – elements such as uranium and thorium are present in rocks and soil. Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon naturally present in all living organisms. It is created by cosmic rays. However, these natural sources of radiation are of little concern. Only anthropogenic sources of radioactivity are considered lethal sources of pollution. For instance, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is the most publicised nuclear disaster ever to occur. The total death count was documented to be at 16,000. However, unofficial reports indicated that the death toll was much higher. Most deaths occurred due to acute radiation poisoning and many other deaths were caused due to radioactivity-induced cancer. Though it has been more than a few decades, radioactivity still persists around the site of the nuclear reactor. Efforts to contain the radioactivity included building the Shelter Structure, more popularly known as the “sarcophagus”. It was built in December 1986 and enclosed the reactor, preventing radiation from leaking through the building.

Though the levels of pollution have dropped down since the industrial revolution, we still see many repercussions to this day. Following are some extreme cases of pollution caused by anthropological activities.

The Great Smog of London was a severe case of air pollution that occurred in 1952. The event caused massive disruption by severely affecting visibility. It also caused a variety of respiratory illnesses in 1,00,000 individuals and the death of over 4,000 as a direct result of the smog.

In India, pollution is even more rampant. Delhi has recorded one of the worst cases of air pollution, with the air rated as “hazardous” in November 2017.

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.

Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.

We are living in the nuclear era. Since a lot of countries are developing their own nuclear devices, it has lead to an increase in the presence of radioactive substances in the atmosphere of the Earth.

This is known as radioactive pollution . Handling and mining of radioactive substances, testing, minor accidents occurring in radioactive power plants are other major causes contributing to radioactive pollution.

Global Warming is another name for climate change. The blanket of pollution that traps the heat around our planet is the main reason why global warming is increasing nowadays. As humans burn fossil fuels, vehicles emit harmful gases, jungles burn at alarming rates – all these factors are the main reasons.

Once it enters the earth’s atmosphere, eventually spreading across the globe. As a result, heat gets trapped around the earth for the next 50 or 100 years after it starts emitting again.

The worst part is harmful gases such as Carbon Dioxide have increased at an alarming rate. Due to this, the upcoming generation will feel the effects of global warming for hundreds of years.

The authorities at the national and international levels have taken several steps to curb the pollution issue. Some of these are as follows:

National Green Tribuna l: The Indian government had set up NGT in order to curb the issues related to the environment in India. Since 2010, it has imposed heavy penalties on several industries when they have failed to comply with NGT’s order. It also helped to revive several polluted lakes. It also ordered the closure of several coal-based industries in Gujarat that caused air pollution.
Alternative Sources of Energy : Since the last few years, the Indian government has been encouraging people to switch towards alternative sources of energy. It is compulsory for the residents of Tamilnadu state to have solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems on their rooftops. Other sources of alternative energy are biofuels, Wind Energy, Hydroelectric energy, etc.
BS-VI Fuel: Recently, the Government of India had announced that from April 1, 2020, onwards, the country will switch towards using BS-VI (Bharat Stage VI) Fuel. Once this rule comes into existence, the vehicular emission of sulphur would come down by more than 50%. It would bring down the emission of Nitrogen Oxide from diesel cars by 70% and by 25% in petrol cars. Similarly, the particulate matter emissions will come down by 80% in cars.
Air Purifiers: People are now using air purifiers especially the indoor ones, to curb air pollution. Air Purifiers clear the particulate matter present in the air, remove harmful bacteria, and improve air quality to a great extent.

Under its banner, the UNO in 1972 had initiated United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in order to address the issue of pollution. It has issued several issues such as climate change, ecosystem management, environmental governance, resource efficiency, etc. It has lead to several successful treaties such as the Montreal Protocol (1987) to limit the emission of gases that were thinning the protective ozone layer, Minamata Convention (2012) to limit the use of toxic mercury, etc. UNEP sponsored ‘Solar Loan Programme’ where lakhs of people from different countries were provided with solar power panels.

Although the authorities of different cities are working hard to curb the pollution issue, however, it is the duty of citizens and common people also to contribute to this process. Few of the important ways to curb all kinds of pollution are:

Stop Bursting Firecrackers : say no to firecrackers when you celebrate festivals such as Dussehra, Diwali or any other occasion of celebration. It causes noise, soil as well as light pollution. Also, it has an adverse effect on our health.
Limit the Use of vehicles : Vehicles are a major cause of pollution. Minimise the use of vehicles. If possible, try to substitute them with electric vehicles for personal use. Use public transportation or carpool can help to reduce air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.
Keep the Surrounding Clean : As a responsible citizen, it should be our duty to keep the area around our home clean. We should dump the waste instead of throwing it here and there. Properly disposing of waste , such as by using designated trash and recycling bins, can help to prevent pollution.
Recycle and Reuse : Several non-biodegradable products such as daily use items made of plastic end up harming our environment. We need to either dispose of it properly or donate it for recycling. Nowadays, the government is running a lot of schemes to recycle plastic where the citizens can not only donate their plastic waste but also exchange it in return for other items.
Plant Trees : Cutting of trees due to several reasons such as the widening of roads, building houses, etc. has led to an increase in different kinds of pollution. Plants absorb harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, etc. present in the atmosphere. Since they release oxygen during the photosynthesis process, therefore, it is important for us to plant and take care of as many trees as we can.
Use environmentally-friendly products : Choosing products that are made from natural, biodegradable materials and that are not harmful to the environment can help to reduce pollution.

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light). Environment Pollution is one of the greatest problems today which is increasing with every passing year and causing crucial and severe damage to the earth. It has become a real problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It is the contamination of physical and biological components of the Earth / atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are harmed. Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible. The word "environment" means surroundings. The environment is polluted in various ways. An average human requires about 12 kg of air each day, which is nearly 12 to15 times greater than the amount of food we eat. Thus even a small concentration of pollutants in the air becomes more significant in comparison to the similar levels present in food. Pollutants that enter water have the ability to spread to distant places especially in the marine ecosystem.

The environment is subject to constant changes that can be caused by natural factors such as soil erosion, earthquakes, floods, fires, and anthropogenic factors such as urbanization, industry, traffic, population growth, the accumulation of waste, and others. The Pollution Problem

Pollution , also called environmental pollution , the addition of any substance ( solid , liquid , or gas ) or any form of energy (such as heat , sound, or radioactivity ) to the environment at a rate faster than it can be dispersed, diluted, decomposed, recycled, or stored in some harmless form. The major kinds of pollution, usually classified by environment, are air pollution , water pollution , and land pollution . Modern society is also concerned about specific types of pollutants, such as noise pollution , light pollution , and plastic pollution . Pollution of all kinds can have negative effects on the environment and wildlife and often impacts human health and well-being.

History of pollution

Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes , use of the word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source—that is, a source created by human activities. Pollution has accompanied humankind ever since groups of people first congregated and remained for a long time in any one place. Indeed, ancient human settlements are frequently recognized by their wastes— shell mounds and rubble heaps, for instance. Pollution was not a serious problem as long as there was enough space available for each individual or group. However, with the establishment of permanent settlements by great numbers of people, pollution became a problem, and it has remained one ever since.

By the middle of the 20th century, an awareness of the need to protect air, water, and land environments from pollution had developed among the general public.

Cities of ancient times were often noxious places, fouled by human wastes and debris. Beginning about 1000 CE, the use of coal for fuel caused considerable air pollution , and the conversion of coal to coke for iron smelting beginning in the 17th century exacerbated the problem. In Europe, from the Middle Ages well into the early modern era, unsanitary urban conditions favoured the outbreak of population-decimating epidemics of disease, from plague to cholera and typhoid fever . Through the 19th century, water and air pollution and the accumulation of solid wastes were largely problems of congested urban areas. But, with the rapid spread of industrialization and the growth of the human population to unprecedented levels, pollution became a universal problem.

By the middle of the 20th century, an awareness of the need to protect air, water, and land environments from pollution had developed among the general public. In particular, the publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson ’s book Silent Spring focused attention on environmental damage caused by improper use of pesticides such as DDT and other persistent chemicals that accumulate in the food chain and disrupt the natural balance of ecosystems on a wide scale. In response, major pieces of environmental legislation, such as the Clean Air Act (1970) and the Clean Water Act (1972; United States), were passed in many countries to control and mitigate environmental pollution.

Pollution control

The presence of environmental pollution raises the issue of pollution control . Great efforts are made to limit the release of harmful substances into the environment through air pollution control, wastewater treatment , solid-waste management , hazardous-waste management , and recycling . Unfortunately, attempts at pollution control are often surpassed by the scale of the problem, especially in less-developed countries . Noxious levels of air pollution are common in many large cities, where particulates and gases from transportation , heating, and manufacturing accumulate and linger. The problem of plastic pollution on land and in the oceans has only grown as the use of single-use plastics has burgeoned worldwide. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions, such as methane and carbon dioxide , continue to drive global warming and pose a great threat to biodiversity and public health .

UD leads frontier research on plastics problem

Center for Plastics Innovation receives $14.5 million renewal

Decades ago, we got into a bad habit. We got the idea in our heads that plastic was so cheap to make that it didn’t seem to matter how many plastic bags, bottles, drinking straws and countless other items we used once and threw away.

The problem is that most plastics take a long time to decompose. Plastics in use today, from disposable diapers to Styrofoam coffee cups, will linger long after we become dust. These plastics are estimated to take some 500 years to break down.

The scale of the problem is both vast and complex. More than 400 million tons of plastics of all different kinds, equivalent to the weight of more than 40,000 Eiffel Towers, are produced globally each year. About 8 million tons of this waste winds up in the ocean. At the current rate, some experts predict that by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight.

At the Center for Plastics Innovation (CPI) at the University of Delaware, researchers are making scientific breakthroughs essential to reducing plastic waste. The center is led by LaShanda Korley, Distinguished Professor of Engineering at UD. Thomas H. Epps, III, the Allan and Myra Ferguson Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, serves as deputy director.

Initially funded four years ago by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of the nation’s Energy Frontier Research Centers, CPI has now been awarded over $14.5 million in renewal funding to continue its mission to develop scientific tools and processes to deconstruct and upgrade plastic waste, transforming it chemically into something valuable to keep it out of landfills or elsewhere in the environment, and to develop new polymers that are inherently recyclable.

“Congratulations to Professors LaShanda Korley and Thomas Epps and their entire team at the Center for Plastics Innovation for the progress they are making to address this critical challenge facing the sustainability of our planet,” said UD President Dennis Assanis. “We applaud the pioneering accomplishments that already have been made and wish this exceptional team, and all of its partners, continued success with their work ahead.”

Building on excellence

As an Energy Frontier Research Center, CPI is bringing a fresh focus to the global problem of plastics waste, seeking the balance between meeting demand for lightweight, resilient materials, while also thwarting the environmental threat of plastic pollution.

The research team includes experts at UD, University of Chicago, University of Florida, University of Pennsylvania, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“What is unique about the Center for Plastics Innovation is the convergence of expertise in polymer chemistry and engineering, catalysis, materials science, enzyme engineering, computational modeling, advanced manufacturing and data science,” Korley said. “The center’s strength is taking a systems-level approach to the entire plastics paradigm.”

Plastics are inherently complex. “There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach to the global problem of plastics pollution,” Korley said.

Many kinds of plastics are manufactured around the world, all with different molecular structures — from the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used in water bottles, to the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for making drainage pipes and many other materials.

Different production processes are involved in making each kind of plastic, and an array of additives may be used to increase durability, flexibility, fire resistance and other qualities. Each plastic also may behave differently at different temperatures, pressures or exposure to chemicals.

When the plastic is tossed away for recycling, there is the additional challenge of dealing with whatever material the plastic may have bottled, contained or otherwise commingled with.

CPI is developing a comprehensive strategy to valorize diverse plastics waste streams and enhance circularity in the plastics life cycle — keeping plastic items in longer use where possible, then recovering and reusing that plastic for valuable things like lubricants. The center is driving the new frontier of plastics sustainability.

“One of the most distinctive aspects of CPI is its ability to deal with real-world problems and advance scientific frontiers through molecular-level understanding,” said Dion Vlachos, Unidel Dan Rich Chair in Energy, who co-leads the center’s research thrust on complex waste. “It is one of the centers whose science would significantly impact the environment and our society. We are excited to continue to host the center and work with many talented researchers across academia and industry.”

Continuing the track record of success

So far, CPI researchers have shared these innovations in top scientific journals and have patented eight inventions, from converting plastic waste into lubricants, to using microwave technology to convert polyethylene, the most common plastic, into olefins, the raw materials for manufacturing products ranging from plastics to detergent.

Dozens of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students have received training through the center along the way.

“Our trainees are amazing — from seeding new collaborations within CPI, to launching new community initiatives, such as a hands-on ‘Polymers in our World’ exhibit within the Discovery Gallery at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science,” Korley said.

An expanded PIER plan (for “promoting inclusive and equitable research”) is being implemented as part of the new grant, inspired, in part, by Korley’s recent tenure as a U.S. Science Envoy . She visited nine countries on three continents, including Europe, Africa and Asia, to promote international partnerships that can nurture a new generation of researchers eager to develop solutions to plastic pollution.

As an extension of those travels, earlier this year, CPI hosted a collaborative Earth Day webinar with plastics sustainability experts from Ghana, highlighting plastics from a global perspective.

A variety of other initiatives are underway to connect with broader audiences. CPI hosted a Polymer Sustainability Workshop for K-12 students and their teachers in collaboration with West Chester University this past May.

More recently, CPI researchers got a behind-the-scenes visit to the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, to discuss how the institution deals with plastics and to explore possible collaborations. The center, part of the National Air and Space Museum, has more than 3,000 aviation and space artifacts on display.

In addition to all of these activities, Korley was recently invited to serve as co-chair of the Roundtable on Plastics at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine , which is examining issues associated with U.S. efforts to reduce plastic pollution.

Clearly, the center is booming.

“Great science with a great team” — that’s how Korley sums up the center’s progress so far.

“I am very blessed to work with each and every member of CPI,” Korley said. “Important discoveries are being made in collaborative and interdisciplinary teams, all working toward achieving the center’s vision.”

The world is pumping out 57 million tons of plastic pollution a year

The world creates 57 million tons of plastic pollution every year and spreads it from the deepest oceans to the highest mountaintop to the inside of people's bodies, according to a new study that also said more than two-thirds of it comes from the Global South.

It's enough pollution each year—about 52 million metric tons—to fill New York City's Central Park with plastic waste as high as the Empire State Building, according to researchers at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. They examined waste produced on the local level at more than 50,000 cities and towns across the world for a study in Wednesday's journal Nature .

The study examined plastic that goes into the open environment, not plastic that goes into landfills or is properly burned. For 15% of the world's population, government fails to collect and dispose of waste, the study's authors said—a big reason Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa produce the most plastic waste. That includes 255 million people in India, the study said.

Lagos, Nigeria, emitted the most plastic pollution of any city, according to study author Costas Velis, a Leeds environmental engineering professor. The other biggest plastic polluting cities are New Delhi; Luanda, Angola; Karachi, Pakistan and Al Qahirah, Egypt.

India leads the world in generating plastic pollution, producing 10.2 million tons a year (9.3 million metric tons), far more than double the next big-polluting nations, Nigeria and Indonesia. China, often villainized for pollution, ranks fourth but is making tremendous strides in reducing waste, Velis said. Other top plastic polluters are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Brazil. Those eight nations are responsible for more than half of the globe's plastic pollution, according to the study's data.

The United States ranks 90th in plastic pollution with more than 52,500 tons (47,600 metric tons) and the United Kingdom ranks 135th with nearly 5,100 tons (4,600 metric tons), according to the study.

In 2022, most of the world's nations agreed to make the first legally binding treaty on plastics pollution, including in the oceans. Final treaty negotiations take place in South Korea in November.

The study used artificial intelligence to concentrate on plastics that were improperly burned—about 57% of the pollution—or just dumped. In both cases incredibly tiny microplastics, or nanoplastics, are what turn the problem from a visual annoyance at beaches and a marine life problem to a human health threat, Velis said.

Several studies this year have looked at how prevalent microplastics are in our drinking water and in people's tissue, such as hearts, brains and testicles , with doctors and scientists still not quite sure what it means in terms of human health threats.

"The big time bomb of microplastics are these microplastics released in the Global South mainly," Velis said. "We already have a huge dispersal problem. They are in the most remote places ... the peaks of Everest , in the Mariana Trench in the ocean, in what we breathe and what we eat and what we drink."

He called it "everybody's problem" and one that will haunt future generations.

"We shouldn't put the blame, any blame, on the Global South," Velis said. "And we shouldn't praise ourselves about what we do in the Global North in any way."

It's just a lack of resources and ability of government to provide the necessary services to citizens, Velis said.

Outside experts worried that the study's focus on pollution, rather than overall production, lets the plastics industry off the hook. Making plastics emits large amounts of greenhouse gas that contribute to climate change .

"These guys have defined plastic pollution in a much narrower way, as really just macroplastics that are emitted into the environment after the consumer, and it risks us losing our focus on the upstream and saying, hey now all we need to do is manage the waste better," said Neil Tangri, senior director of science and policy at GAIA, a global network of advocacy organizations working on zero waste and environmental justice initiatives. "It's necessary but it's not the whole story."

Theresa Karlsson, science and technical advisor to International Pollutants Elimination Network, another coalition of advocacy groups on environment, health and waste issues, called the volume of pollution identified by the study "alarming" and said it shows the amount of plastics being produced today is "unmanageable."

But she said the study misses the significance of the global trade in plastic waste that has rich countries sending it to poor ones. The study said plastic waste trade is decreasing, with China banning waste imports. But Karlsson said overall waste trade is actually increasing and likely plastics with it. She cited EU waste exports going from 110,000 tons (100,000 metric tons) in 2004 to 1.4 million tons (1.3 million metric tons) in 2021.

Velis said the amount of plastic waste traded is small. Kara Lavender Law, an oceanography professor at the Sea Education Association who wasn't involved in the study, agreed, based on U.S. plastic waste trends. She said this was otherwise one of the more comprehensive studies on plastic waste.

Officials in the plastics industry praised the study.

"This study underscores that uncollected and unmanaged plastic waste is the largest contributor to plastic pollution and that prioritizing adequate waste management is critical to ending plastic pollution ," Chris Jahn, council secretary of the International Council on Chemical Associations, said in a statement. In treaty negotiations, the industry opposes a cap on plastic production.

Plastic bag bans in the U.S. have proven effective in reducing plastic litter and pollution in the ocean, according to a new study from the environmental nonprofit Ocean Conservancy.

The report highlights the positive impact of these bans on reducing the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean, which totals over 12 million tons annually, including plastic bottles and carrier bags, threatening marine ecosystems and wildlife.

The study is based on data collected during the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the world’s largest beach cleanup effort, which takes place each September.

The findings show a significant decline in the number of plastic bags found on beaches following the implementation of statewide plastic bag bans across the U.S. According to the report, there has been a 29% reduction in plastic grocery bags collected from beaches and waterways between 2022 and 2023, compared to pre-pandemic levels.

“Plastic bags are one of the deadliest forms of plastic pollution to marine life, and sadly, they are also one of the most commonly found polluting our beaches,” said Dr. Anja Brandon, Ocean Conservancy’s director of plastics policy hoping that this analysis will inspire other states to pass bans of their own.

Despite this progress, plastic bags remain among the top five most-collected types of plastic waste during cleanups, highlighting the ongoing need for effective policies and public awareness.

The decline in plastic bag waste correlates with a doubling of the U.S. population covered by statewide plastic bag bans, which increased from 12% to 25% since 2020.However, the number might also be explained by the fact that plastic pollution surged temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the increased use of single-use plastics, including plastic bags, masks, and takeaway food containers, driven by hygiene concerns.

Beyond policy solutions like plastic bag bans, various companies and nonprofits are working on innovative ways to clean up plastic waste already polluting the ocean, or to produce biodegradable products for packaging tasks.

On September 21 Ocean Concervancy plans the traditional cleanup day, this year aiming at achieving the World’s largest beach cleanup effort to engage over half a million volunteers.

One of the most notable efforts comes from the Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup, which has been using a floating system to collect plastic from rivers and oceans since 2013. The organization claims to have removed a total of 10 million kilograms (22 million pounds) of plastic worldwide. However, the system cannot capture microplastics, a critical and challenging aspect of ocean pollution.

British company Polymateria is addressing plastic pollution at its source by developing plastics that meet new biodegradable standards. These plastics can fully biodegrade, helping reduce long-term waste accumulation, but pricing deters potential clients to switch towards non-fossil-fuel-based products.

Meanwhile, Paris-based biotech company Calyxia just raised $35 million in Series B funding to develop biodegradable microcapsules and microparticles for use in consumer goods, crop protection, and advanced materials. These innovative products aim to replace traditional microplastic ingredients, which are widely used in cosmetics, laundry care, and crop protection products.

International Efforts to Reduce Plastic Bag Use

Countries around the world are taking steps to limit plastic bag consumption and reduce plastic waste. The European Union has set a target for citizens to use a maximum of 40 plastic bags per year.

While in Belgium, Portugal, Austria and Sweden citizens use only 30 and 40 bags per year - less than one per week - other countries in the continent continue purchasing and using plastic bags.

Norway has seen a reduction in plastic bag consumption from 120 bags per person in 2022 to 75 but still lags behind its neighbors. To encourage further reduction, Norway has recently raised the price of plastic carrier bags from two to three cents. However, this policy has not been as effective as hoped, with many Norwegians citing forgetfulness or the use of plastic bags for household waste as reasons for continuing to purchase them.

In other European countries, alternative approaches have been more successful. Swedish supermarkets prominently display reusable bags and promote clear messaging on reducing plastic waste, while many stores in Denmark no longer offer plastic bags at all. In Italy, compostable carrier bags have become the standard at most supermarkets, encouraging more sustainable habits.

A combination of policy development, public engagement for clean-up efforts, tech innovation, and corporate responsibility will be needed to achieve long-term sustainability and ensure safer marine habitats.
