Nigeria ePassport Application
-->
The Nigerian Passport is afforded as a constitutional right to every adult Nigerian Citizen according to section (38) of the 1979 constitution which stipulates a citizen's right to freedom of movement within, into and out of Nigeria. Consequently, Most Nigerian Consular Missions have an immigration department that facilitates Standard ePassport application process either directly or in collaboration with other Nigeria Missions.
In 2019, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) launched a new "Enhanced e-Passport" by ICAO-standards and integrated with the National Identification Number (NIN) database. Among the new features are the long awaited 10-year validity 64-page booklet e-passport . In order to phase in the new e-Passport Regime, the existing passport application backlog was cleared in may 2021 .
Although the Nigeria Immigration Service issues other types of passports and travel documents for other purposes, this particular page is about the green Nigeria Standard ePassport which is the most common and one of only 2 types of passports issued by Nigeria Missions abroad . The other is the NTP launched in March 2021.
E-Passport Eligibility
Every citizen of Nigeria, whether born in Nigeria or abroad to Nigerian parents may be eligible to apply for a Standard ePassport. However, a minor younger than 18 years old can only obtain the ePassport through their legal Nigerian guardian and may not be eligible for the 10-year validity passport which is available only to Nigerians 18 years and above.
If applicant aleady has the older Standard ePassport, they can continue to use it until 6 months before expiry. In order to apply for the new Enhanced ePassport, current ePassport must be unintentionally lost, damaged, exhaust its pages or have less than 180 days validity remaining.

Passport Procedure
These steps apply to Nigerians who apply for passport outside Nigeria. Before you start anything, find out from the nearest Nigerian Mission if they process passports. The preferred method of finding out is by calling the Embassy. See contact details of all Embassies on this link . If they accept passport applications, find out what categories of booklets are available (32 pages, 64 pages, 10-year validity passports, etc). Getting this information will help you decide what options are best for you. When you have obtained sufficient information, follow the steps below.
- Step 1 : Gather Requirements - Prepare all the necessary requirements for the ePassport.
- First time applicants in Nigeria should use this link ( https://passport.immigration.gov.ng/application )
- Application for renewal abroad should use this link ( https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/passport/epass.. )
- Step 3 : Pay Online in the same aforementioned online application process and print out payment receipt .
- Step 4 : Affix 2 Passport Photographs (Size 35/40mm) with white background and no head / face covers.
- Step 5 : Submit Application with the printed form and attached requirements to the Nigerian Mission or VAC .
- Step 6 : Book Appointment - Follow the Mission's Instruction to book appointment for Biometric processing.
- Step 7 : Biometric Capture - Show up at the appointment venue for biometric capture and passport production.
- Step 8 : Collection - It can take between hours and weeks. Call the Mission to verify it's ready before going to collect.
Important Information
The final decision on passport is made in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Office in Abuja, not in the Embassy.
Whether adult or minor, applicant must be physically present in the Consular Mission to capture biometric data and receive passport.
Applicant's current passport will be digitally invalidated once the new one has been issued. If it has a valid visa in it, holder is only allowed to combine that old passport with the new one only for the duration of that valid visa, after which holder is expected to stop presenting it to any authority.
Section 10 of the Immigration Act 2015 prohibits holder from using more than one Nigerian Passport .

Nigerian passport renewal: Everything you must know
If it's time to renew your Nigerian passport , you're in the right place. This comprehensive guide aims to simplify the Nigerian passport renewal process, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience.
Navigating bureaucratic processes can be daunting, but with our clear, step-by-step instructions, we'll guide you through everything from eligibility criteria to the final steps of the renewal process. Let's explore the details of a Nigerian passport renewal !
How to start the Nigeria passport renewal process
Nigerian passports aren’t technically "renewed" in the traditional sense. Instead, when your passport nears its expiration date, you actually undergo a process of re-issuance . This means you’ll receive a completely new passport rather than an extension or renewal of your existing one.
When your current passport approaches its expiration date , you should begin the re-issuance process. This is critical because if your passport expires, you’ll be left without a valid travel document, making international travel impossible. However, you can also re-issue if you have an expired Nigerian passport.
The Nigeria Immigration Service offers an online platform where you can initiate the application process , upload required documents, and schedule appointments if necessary. This online system streamlines the process, making it more convenient and faster.
Nigeria passport renewal: Requirements to re-issue a Nigerian passport
Re-issuing a Nigerian passport requires specific documents , which vary depending on your situation. Whether renewing for a minor, replacing a lost passport, or just renewing your own, understanding what documents are needed is crucial for a smooth process. Here’s a list of what you’ll need to help you prepare the necessary paperwork.
Local government letter of identification – A letter from your local government area confirming your identity.
A birth certificate or a legally acceptable document that declares your age.
Two colored passport-size photographs taken recently.
Guarantor's form – This form must be certified by a Commissioner of Oaths. It acts as a verification of your identity and character.
Provide your marriage certificate to support the name change in your passport (if applicable).
Minor applicants (under 16 years) must provide additional documents:
A letter from the parents or legal guardians giving consent for the passport application.
If applicable, include a copy of the parents' identification documents.
If you are replacing a lost passport, you must provide:
A police report indicating that your passport was lost.
A sworn affidavit for the loss of the passport.
How to apply for a Nigerian passport renewal
It's important to understand that the Nigerian passport is not "renewed" but "re-issued." Whether you’re applying for passport services from within Nigeria or abroad, the process involves completing an online application form and scheduling an appointment to submit the documents. The procedures vary slightly depending on your location.
Applying to re-issue the passport in Nigeria
Here are the steps to apply for a passport re-issuance in Nigeria: Register on the official Nigerian Immigration Service portal and complete the application form to re-issue the passport .
Pay the passport fee online using a debit or credit card or purchase a post office money order of the correct amount. After payment, you will receive an acknowledgment slip and evidence of payment, which are crucial for your appointment.
Schedule an appointment at the nearest passport office or immigration service center . Attend the appointment with all the required original documents and the acknowledgment slip.
Applying to re-issue the Nigerian passport abroad
For Nigerian passport applicants from outside the country, these are steps to re-issue the document:
Register on the Nigerian Immigration Service portal and complete the online application form for passport re-issue.
Pay the passport fees online . Your payment will be in USD when you select a processing country other than Nigeria.
Schedule an appointment at the closest Nigerian Embassy or mission for submission of documents. On the appointment date, carry all required documents, including your payment confirmation slip.
Nigeria passport processing fee
Nigeria passport fees vary based on the applicant's age and the type of passport booklet required. You pay for it online through the Nigerian government portal. Here's a breakdown of the passport processing fees:

What is a Nigerian Passport
The Nigerian international passport is a travel document in the form of a pamphlet, issued by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria for identity confirmation and immigration purposes.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) is a government agency in the executive arm solely responsible for the production and distribution of Nigerian international passports.
Nigerians who plan on traveling abroad for business, leisure, study, or vacation must apply for a Nigerian international passport. The 32-page Nigerian international passport is commonly possessed by leisure travelers .

While business travelers usually own a 64-page passport because their job requires frequent international business trips. This saves them the trouble of always applying for a new one.
Types Of International Passport In Nigeria
There are two types of passport available in Nigeria: Standard, and official passport . Nigerian Immigration Services only issues electronic passports to new applicants. A standard e-passport (green cover) is available to all Nigerian citizens, while official e-passports (blue cover) are exclusively reserved for government officials, commissioners, and Nigerian diplomats.
There are two types of standard passport in Nigeria. The most common one is the 32-page international passport booklet, and then there is the 64-page international passport booklet.
1. 32-page international passport
The 32-page international passport is the most common passport form in the country. This is because it is cheaper than its associate, the 64-page passport. The 32-page international passport has only 32 pages and valid for 5 years.
Once you fill all the pages on this passport booklet, you’ll have to apply for a new one or renew the old one. Most people that apply for this document use it as an alternative to an ID, not for immigration purposes.
2. 64-page international passport booklet
Then there’s the 64-page Nigerian passport. It is valid for up to 10 years and as stated in the name, it has only 64 pages. This passport is actively used by Nigerians for immigration purposes. You can use it to travel abroad for studies, business, or leisure.
Price Of International Passport In Nigeria
According to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS ), Nigerian passports do not come at a fixed price. Some cost as low as ₦15,000 and others comes with a rather outrageous price.
Since we’ve taken time to review the types of passport available in Nigeria and their validity periods, let’s take a bit more time to review the cost of these documents. The table below contains the price of Nigerian passports and the type.

---|---|---|---|

---|---|---|
From the table above, it is obvious that a 64-page Nigerian passport is more expensive when compared to a 32 pages Nigerian passport. The Nigerian Immigration Service also said that there will be an additional ₦2,000 charge for Address Verification.
This fee is compulsory for all applicants regardless of age, category, or type.
The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has launched a new international passport with longer validity and enhanced security. According to a statement by the NIS spokesman, Sunday James, “the new and the old passports will work simultaneously.”
The 64-Page Passport in Nigeria with 10 years of validity will cost ₦80,000. While applicants outside the country will have to pay $230. While the 64-Page Passport In Nigeria with 5 years of validity will cost ₦35,000 .
The 32-Page Nigerian Passport with 5 years of validity will cost ₦25,000 and $130 if you reside outside the country .
This new passport is made with Polycarbonate technology, the same material used to make unbreakable glass and eyeglass lenses. This allows the new passport to have a better look, enhanced security, shorter processing time, and longer lifespan .

Nigerian International Passport: Application, Cost & Renewal
It is very important to know that you cannot step foot outside the country without your international passport. Not just your international passport but a valid one that is yet to expire, or has been renewed. The Nigerian international passport is a vital piece of document issued to Nigerian citizens intending to travel outside the country.
Nigeria now offers electronic passports for new passport applications. These electronic passports are not virtual/soft copies. They are touchable and they can be misplaced. They are known as the e-passport, and are classified as either Standard or Official e-passport, depending on intended use.
Obtaining the Nigerian International Passport can either be done online or offline.
Offline International Passport :
This is the most followed route. The simple reason is because of the convenience attached to obtaining your passport through an agent. Offline is very expensive, compared to the online process but the fact that there are some technicalities you wouldn’t want to get wrong, and you would still have to take your printed documents to the immigration office, is why people would rather go through the “Pay-and-Deliver” route.
Online International Passport :
To obtain your international passport online, there are few guidelines to follow, and there are few documents that would be required. The documents include:
- Passport Application form (completed online and printed).
- Payment Slip.
- Local Government State of Origin.
- Birth Certificate.
- Change of name affidavit (if you’ve changed your name before).
- Photocopy of Applicant’s data page.
- Two current passport-size photographs.
- Driver’s License.
- Processing fee of N15,000.
To pay online, follow these first procedures, after which every other thing is just click and submit.
- Visit the Home page of Nigeria Immigration Portal.
- Locate & click on the e-passpoert tab to in the appropriate application form to start the process:
- Select your preferred passport type.
- Select your Processing Country.
- Fill in the form with your current and correct details.
- Insert the scanned copies of your required documents
- Select your payment method and proceed to online payment.
There is the 32pages International Passport, and there is the 64pages; although you almost can’t lay hands on the 64 pages passport without first presenting your filled up or expired 32pages passport. This is in a bid to make sure that they (immigration officers) remain in business, as the official cost for making a 64pages international passport is what is collected for the 32 pages when you visit the immigration office.
For Renewal, you would be required to present the following documents in person at the immigration office. If misplaced, you might be referred to the immigration head office in Abuja to get it done and it might cost around a week or two.
Documents needed include:
- Police Report (if misplaced).
- Renewal Fee N20,000.
- Two (2) passport-size photographs preferably with white background.
- Applicant should provide Passport Number of lost Passport (if applicable).
- Applicant will be required to appear in person for biometric and image acquisition.
It is advisable to apply afresh for a new International Passport rather than go through the stress for the renewal.
