The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in International Relations trains scholars to conduct cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research across key areas of international affairs and political science.

The full-time only PhD program at Johns Hopkins SAIS will cultivate your expertise as a scholar of international relations. During your studies you will work closely with a faculty advisor to develop a customized academic plan that best supports your dissertation research.

At the end of their first year, students take a written and oral qualifying comprehensive exam that requires them to demonstrate competency in theoretical, epistemological and methodological literature and issues in international relations, comparative politics, and social theory.

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) at the time of matriculation to be eligible to apply to the Ph.D. program. The Department does not currently offer a terminal M.A. degree. The Ph.D. program is a 57-credit program.

The Doctor of International Affairs is designed for professionals with at least five-years of full-time work experience in international affairs or a related field who seek to further their expertise through an advanced practitioner’s degree.
