The Doctor of Philosophy degree in Communications offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the relationships between people and media in their cultural, social, political, historical, economic and technological contexts.
The Communications Ph.D. program is administered and funded by the Journalism School, but in most academic matters, including requirements for the dissertation, it follows the academic regulations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, which formally confers all doctoral degrees at Columbia.
Ph.D. in Communications applicants: GRE scores are required. Please provide test scores as printed on the score report you received from Educational Testing Service (ETS) and ensure that an official copy of your score report is sent from ETS to the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Unlike traditional doctoral programs, which treat Communications as a self-contained discipline dedicated to a distinct body of knowledge, our Ph.D. program recognizes that Communications is a subject matter that is of interest to—and is informed by—a wide range of academic fields.

Christine’s research examines confirmation bias and its influence on reporters and editors in the newsroom. She is interested in how bias shapes the way news is gathered, produced, and disseminated. Before joining Columbia’s Ph.D. Communications program, Christine worked as an editor at Esquire.
