Chemmeen to Aarachar: Ten Legendary Malayalam Novels You Must Read!

While it is near impossible to round down to one for the vast diversity showcased by the authors in Kerala, here are some of the finest literary works ever produced in Malayalam.

W ith its unfathomable contribution to Indian literature, Kerala has carved itself a niche position in the literary circles with works that often reflect deep introspection through its unprecedented storylines and ingenious narrative styles.

From simplistic writings of legendary Vaikom Muhammad Basheer to microcosmic narratives of O.V. Vijayan and works of contemporary authors like K.R. Meera and Benyamin, the writers have never failed to captivate both readers and critics alike with their skill of crafting unforgettable tales.

While it is near impossible to round down to one for the vast diversity showcased by the authors in Kerala, we have tried our hand in sieving out some of the finest literary works ever produced in Malayalam.

Here are ten best works in Malayalam literature – along with their translated English counterparts – ranging from the early 1940s to the present decade that you must not miss out for the pure love of reading:

1. Chemmeen (1956) by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai

One of the biggest cult classics to have been ever written in Malayalam, Chemmeen (Prawns) is a saga revolving around the myth among the fishermen communities in Kerala—that of a married woman’s chastity.

Penned with great emotional detail about the customs, taboos, moral boundaries and day-to-day instances of the community while trudging through toils of life and existence, the novel went on to win the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, India’s second highest literary prize, in 1957.

The book was adapted into a feature film by the same name in 1965, which is considered to be one amongst the greatest Indian films ever made.

2. Khasakkinte Ithihasam (1969) by O.V. Vijayan

One of the most unforgettable books ever written in Malayalam, Khasakkinte Ithihasam continues to mesmerise its readers with a surrealistic visualisation encapsulated within the settings of a sleepy little village that has a microcosm of its own.

The novel, which is considered to be O.V Vijayan’s masterpiece, has been reprinted more than fifty times, making it one of the most best-selling novels in South Asia. Inspired by a real village called Thasarak near Palakkad, the novel does not have a single straight narrative which makes it all the more gripping – as one walks through the spiritual journey of an under-graduate dropout, Ravi.

The plot begins with the man’s arrival to the village and how things are never the same again. The Legends of Khasak was translated by the author himself in 1994 and has often been lauded for its extensive depth in characters and unprecedented narrative style that would have otherwise been rendered as a mundane village romance.

3. Balyakalasakhi (1944) by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer

One of the finest writers in the history of Malayalam Literature, Vaikom Muhammad Basheer or simply Basheer is more popular for his works like Pathummayude Aadu , Mathilukal and Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu .

But it is his Balyakalasakhi (Childhood Friend) that has managed to captivate its readers with its simple yet heart-wrenching story of two childhood friends who go on to become lovers till fate decides otherwise.

Believed to be an autobiographical work, the novel showcases love in its truest form—sometimes the one that remains unfulfilled. One of the noteworthy aspects of the story is the way the author disguises a trace of poignancy in the light narrative style and brings humour even during situations of abject tragedy.

4. Aarachaar (2013) by K.R. Meera

Set in Chitpur, Kolkata, the narrative revolves around the ancient legacy of the Graddha Mullicks, a lineage believed to go back four hundred years before Christ. Having been the creators of fate with the noose in their hands, the twist in the plot comes when the last heir is grudgingly handed over the title—and its a woman!

The original, Aarachaar (An Executioner) went on to bag Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for 2013, followed by Odakkuzhal Award in 2013, Vayalar Award in 2014 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015, making K.R. Meera one of the best literary writers in Malayalam. ‘Hangwoman: Everyone loves a Good Hanging’ is translated by J Devika.

5. Randamoozham (1984) by M.T. Vasudevan Nair

With a revisionist narrative of the epic Mahabharata, this book is one of the most widely read Malayalam classics ever produced. What makes the novel an engaging and pensive read is the protagonist—Bhima. Considered to be M.T Vasudevan Nair’s masterpiece, the work won the prestigious Vayalar Award , given for the best literary work in Malayalam, in 1985 and Muttathu Varkey Award in 1994.

Diverging from the timeworn narrative involving divine elements, Randamoozham (Second Turn), give its due share to the actual draftsman behind the victory of Pandavas. Translated by Gita Krishnankutty as Bhima: Lone Warrior in 2013, the book continues to enjoy a cult status in the state and will soon be adapted as a mega-budget feature film.

6. Verukal (1966) by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan

Believed to be semi-autobiographical, Verukal (Roots) is one of the best works of Malayattoor Ramakrishnan. Bagging the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967, the narrative revolves around the life of a family of Tamil speaking Iyers who had settled in Kerala generations ago and sheds light on the drastic effect of modernism and how it has the ability of uprooting one’s heritage.

Originally settled elsewhere, the protagonist comes to his native village with the sole intention of selling his ancestral property. However, over the period of his stay, he ends up treading down memory lane and hits a realisation that forms the crux of the story. Resonating with those who left their native towns in search of employment and other pursuits, it is a story of homecoming that strikes a chord, right in the heart.

The English translation of the book which goes by the name Roots was published in 2002.

7. Aatujeevitham (2008) by Benyamin

First published in serial form in Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly, Aatujeevitham (Life of a Goat) illustrates the life of an abused migrant worker in Saudi Arabia written by Bahrain-based Indian author Benyamin.

It is the hard-hitting story of a gulf-aspirant who, upon finally reaching his dreamland, ends up leading a slave-like existence herding goats in the middle of the Saudi desert. Based on real-life incidents, the novel goes through a series of incidents that illustrate the journey of a man through extreme adversity and loneliness, pushing the man to hatch a life-threatening scheme to escape his desert prison.

The English translation of the novel, Goat Days, found its way into the long list of Man Asian Literary Prize 2012 and was shortlisted for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature in 2013. Touted as one of top best-sellers of present-day Malayalam Literature, Aatujeevitham was also the recipient of Kerala Literary Academy Award for the year 2009. The book is also part of the syllabus in Kerala University, Calicut University, Bharathiar University, Pondicherry University and 10th standard for Kerala State syllabus.

8.  Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil (1974) by M. Mukundan

Set in the erstwhile French enclave of Mayyazhi or Mahe, the plot is a mélange of shimmering French elegance and rustic native myths and legends and captures a period of transition of people still stuck in the entrapments of the colonial era.

A masterpiece by one of the celebrated authors in Kerala, M. Mukundan’s Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil is a tale of love, frustration and decay that the author has woven amidst the idyllic backdrop of the Arabian Sea and the Mayyazhi river.

Journeying through trials and tribulations of two families bonded by friendship but complete juxtapose to one another, one goes back in time as the narrative seeps through the spectre of the territory’s independence movement.

On the Banks of the Mayyazhi which is the English translation by Gita Krishnankutty, manages to retain the soul of Mukundan’s narrative and engages the reader as much as the original.

9. Oru Desathinte Katha   (1971) by S.K. Pottekkatt

Recipient of both Kendra Sahitya Academy in 1973 and Jnanpith Award in 1980, Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale) is one of the best works of writer S. K. Pottekkatt. Set in the village of Athiranippādam, the plot takes the readers on a journey that begins from the village of Athiranippādam to North India and as far as Africa and Switzerland, stretching over a period of 55 years.

Believed to be a fictionalised autobiography, the protagonist’s character sketch seeks inspiration from the author himself, who beautifully yarns a story that incorporates an interesting concoction of street gossip, fairy tale and recorded history.

Igniting a sense of nostalgia and longing, the novel comprises various characters and instances end up rendering a feeling of déjà vu amidst  readers—of people they have met, conversations they have had, places they have seen and people they may know. The English version was translated by Sreedevi K. Nair and Radhika P. Menon and was published as Tales of Athiranippādam in 2013.

10. Agnisakshi (1976) by Lalithambika Antharjanam

A social reformer best known for her literary works in Malayalam, much of Lalithambika Antharjanam’s writing dealt with the role of women in society, and how societal norms often ended up being an obstacle for a woman to explore her individuality.

More famous for her short stories and poems, Agnisakshi was the only novel written by Lalithambika, who penned it down during the twilight years of her life. Having received both Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the novel enjoys the status of a classic in Malayalam fiction.

With an insight into the Namboodiri community of Kerala, the narrative is structured around three characters—Thethikutty, Thankam Nair and Unni Namboodiri and strings together themes like choice, detachment, renunciation, love and devotion as they trudge through different phases in life. The English version was translated by art critic Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan in 1980.

ജപ്പാനിലെ ടെലിവിഷൻ താരവും അവതാരകയുമായിരുന്ന തെത്സുകോ കുറോയാനഗി (Tetsuko Kuroyanagi) എന്ന ടോട്ടോച്ചാനും അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ആകാംഷയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആ ആകാംഷയും സന്തോഷവും ഒക്കെയാണ് 'ടോട്ടോച്ചാൻ' (Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window) എന്ന ആത്മകഥയിലും തെത്സുകോ പറയുന്നത്.

മുന്തിയ സ്കൂളിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ടാണ് കൊച്ചുടോട്ടോ അമ്മയ്ക്കൊപ്പം പുതിയ സ്കൂളിൽ ചേരാൻ എത്തിയത്. സ്കൂളിന്റെ പേര് വലിയ അക്ഷരങ്ങളിൽ എഴുതിയ കോൺക്രീറ്റ് തൂണുകളായിരുന്നില്ല പുതിയ സ്കൂളിന്. നിറയെ ഇലകളുള്ള 'വളരുന്ന തൂൺ...' കൊച്ചുടോട്ടോ ആ സ്കൂളിന്റെ പേര് വായിച്ചെടുത്തു.

ടോ-മോഗാക്വയ്ൻ!

ഇലച്ചാർത്തുകൾക്കിടയിലൂടെ കണ്ട കാഴ്ച ടോട്ടോച്ചാനെ വിസ്മയിപ്പിച്ചു. സ്കൂൾ കെട്ടിടമല്ല, ആറ് ബോഗികളുള്ള ഒരു ട്രെയിൻ. ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ട്രെയിനായിരുന്നു ടോമോഗാക്വയ്ൻ എന്ന, 50 കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങൾ മാത്രം പഠിക്കുന്ന ആ സ്കൂൾ. ട്രെയിനിലെ ടിക്കറ്റ് എക്സാമിനറെ പോലെ ടോമോ ട്രെയിൻ സ്കൂളിന് ഒരു പ്രധാനാധ്യാപകനും, കൊബായാഷി മാസ്റ്റർ. ഒരു തീവണ്ടിയിലെ ടോട്ടോച്ചാന്റെ സഹയാത്രികരായി ഒമ്പത് പേരും.

സ്കൂൾ കെട്ടിടം ട്രെയിൻ ആയത് പോലെ തന്നെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായിരുന്നു ടോമോഗാക്വെയ്നിലെ അധ്യയനവും. ഓരോ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കും ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള വിഷയം ആദ്യം പഠിച്ചുതുടങ്ങാം. ഒരാൾക്ക് ഭാഷയിൽ നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങാം. മറ്റൊരാൾ തുടങ്ങുന്നത് കണക്കിൽ നിന്ന്, ഇനിയൊരു ശാസ്ത്രവിദഗ്ധനാകട്ടെ രാസപദാർത്ഥങ്ങൾ അടങ്ങിയ ഫ്ലാസ്ക് ബർണറിൽ വച്ച് തിളപ്പിച്ച് പഠിച്ചുതുടങ്ങും. ഓരോ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയുടേയും സഹജമായ താത്പര്യം, അവരുടെ ചിന്ത വികസിക്കുന്നത് എങ്ങനെ എന്നൊക്കെ കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള നല്ല മാതൃകയായിരുന്നു കൊബായാഷി മാസ്റ്റർ സ്കൂളിൽ അവലംബിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ടെൻഷൻ ഇല്ലാത്ത, ഹോം വർക്ക് ഇല്ലാത്ത സ്കൂൾ

Qabar | KR Meera | Book Review

Originally written in Malayalam and translated to English by Nisha Susan, Qabar is a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

Phenomenal and evocative, this novel thrives through subtlety in a state of multiple paradoxes. This is particularly true of the constant tussle in the novel between the real and the imaginary. Deeply rooted in contemporary Indian society, the novel is set in Kerala and abounds in the frequent references to iridescent myths of the only man who returned alive from Kashi and the levitating twins.

Partly fact though largely fiction, the novel seamlessly ties loose ends together to create a spellbinding reading experience regarding the essence of being human, which lies in the ability to transcend personal and professional biases to bond with fellow humans on an individual level for the sake of humanity.

Yet, it is living out this humane side that comes with its own set of challenges as noted in the character of Bhavna who is a judge in a court in Kerala. She is a single mother as she has had to separate from her narcissistic husband and her only child, her son, has ADHD.

Her life is suddenly turned upside down with the disclosing of a case that surrounds a property dispute where new construction is proposed to start on a plot that houses a grave. 

While this is the central issue of the case in the novel, the judge’s life is turned upside down when the legal dispute becomes a personal upheaval, creating emotional turmoil in the heart of the protagonist, as the person who petitions to disallow any construction on the site is a mind reader and practitioner of sorcery.

Yet, Bhavna falls for him with a thud, despite being overwhelmed by his presence, stealing glances at him, and being extremely cautious of his ways. What follows is a case of the dichotomy between the political and personal that creates an intellectual and emotional plot line that does not leave any stone unturned in engaging the senses of the reader to create two parallel worlds where the natural and the supernatural meet.

It is at the point of meeting that all energies collide and create a fantastical and phantasmagorical ambiance that is unbelievable yet unputdownable at the same time.

Be it the myth of the twins whose feet don’t touch the ground or Bhavna’s own sorrowful birth story in which she survived but her twin didn’t, it showcases why life is understood as a cycle of seasons which brings happiness and sorrow but more importantly, repeats itself over and over again in different forms.

This connects the history of ancestors to the present time of Bhavna who becomes the archetype of any individual whose present, past, and future coalesce to create the story of their role in this life. This makes the plot of the book resonate with readers on several levels and not just unidirectional or straightforward.

The writing style in Qabar is terse, sententious, and lucid. There is apt usage of vocabulary if not soul-stirring sentences that reveal observations about life and living this life which are simply mind-boggling.

Punctuated by the anxiety of being misunderstood versus misrepresented, the novel leaves a lot of things open-ended and provides space for the reader to deduce and interpret. 

It is this openness that tampers with the flow of the plot, which goes to and fro between the past and present to create a vision of the future that is based on the actions and deeds of the present.

Despite keeping the timer of accountability, responsibility, and decisiveness ticking, there is the humane side of Bhavna who cannot help but fall for the mysterious plaintiff named Kaakkasseri Khayaluddin Thangal. What flows through this acquaintance is nothing but heart-warming revelations that only go on to show how individuals are more similar than different, regardless of their socio-historical backgrounds.

Yet, there is a lot of pain in Qabar which includes the pain of love, separation and just living as individuals who are aware of themselves and their surroundings. However, living is coming to terms with this pain that Bhavna learns in a rather hard way, though it is easier said than done.

Another important aspect of this novel is the issue of the supernatural or sorcery which is considered an art form that requires a lot of devotion and mental strength as noted in the line:  “There is no training in sorcery. Only devotion.”

As an art form, the novel elaborates on the process of exchange that is essential in sorcery. It is considered nothing but an exchange of emotions that is akin to the emotionally surcharged environment of the novel which creates a powerful impact.

However, Qabar is only about 110 pages long and makes for a quick read. The book cover alludes to the Edwardian roses that find ample mention in the plot but the rotten and dried upside-down rose on the cover shows the condition of love in the plot which is difficult to fathom, much more powerful than infatuation and a beautiful emotional transaction.

The novel is an engrossing read and suitable for intermediate and advanced-level readers, lovers of magic realism , or courtroom fiction.

Book review - balyakalasakhi.

                          Balyakalasakhi , is a malayalam romantic tragedy novel written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. The story mainly discuss about the teenage romance of Majeed and Suhra. 

              Majeed and Suhra were neighbours  and childhood friends. They studied in the same school. Majeed was born in a very rich family, so his father decided to send him to town for higher studies but Suhra forced to wind up her schooling after her father's death. Majeed requested his father to sponsor Suhra but he refused. Later Majeed leaves his house after an argument with  his father and he returned after a long time. On his return, he finds that his family lost all their money and assets and also Suhra married to someone else. That was a big shock to him. While Suhra's husband was very abusive and it became difficult for her to stay with him. So, she returned to her home and Majeed commands to her 'don't go back' and she stays. After that Majeed leaves the village in search of a job and he reached a North Indian city. He got a job but one day he  meet with an accident and he lost his leg. The story ends were Majeed got letters from his mom  informed that Suhra is sick and subsequently of Suhra's death. 

               ' Immini Vallya Onnu' is a famous phrase associated to Balyakalasakhi .One day ,teacher asked Majeed 'what is 1+1' ,He replied 'immini vallya onnu' which means 'a slightly bigger one'. Majeed's explained his new theory to Suhra as, When two small rivers are combined, what happened? ,one big river is formed like this when two ones are combined a slightly bigger one is formed. Balyakalasakhi is largely autobiographical ,Basheer said that ,Majeed is himself.   The most interesting part of every Basheer books is the language used by him. Basheer commonly used colloquial language which makes his books unique.

About 57,000 books have been published on the American Civil War so what possibly could be left to explore ?

Quite a bit, it turns out, particularly regarding the bloodiest battle of the war and in American history, Antietam. In one day of savage fighting, Sept. 17, 1862, an estimated 6,500 soldiers were killed and at least 15,000 wounded.

In 291 brisk, fact-stuffed but engaging, thought-provoking pages, “A Day in September” by Stephen Budiansky examines how ill-prepared we as a nation were for war, but more significantly, what we learned and how those advances led to better military training, rapid improvements in battlefield medical care and the beginnings of a reconciling of the differences in North and South society, values and beliefs.

Some key American institutions at the outbreak of the Civil War were astonishingly primitive and Antietam revealed just how bad. Pre-Civil War, for example, most graduates of the U.S. Military Academy were well-schooled in math and engineering, much less so in military tactics.

Many soldiers lacked even rudimentary training such as target shooting. Militias often behaved like fraternal organizations or a mob, Budiansky writes.

Medical care was primitive. For example, most doctors of the Civil War era did not understand how disease was transmitted. Treatment of the wounded at Antietam typically was chaotic; drivers charged with taking wounded to field hospitals often were drunk, the book observes.

What might have made the book even more engaging would be to carry the lessons learned from these failings to the present day.

For example, can we resolve our current differences peacefully ?

This is an absorbing, illuminating, compelling book that calls on us to consider the advances in military strategy, medical care and diplomacy that Antietam gave us at horrific cost.

It also asks us to consider a rift between science and religion that emerged after the war. The book notes that our religious leaders also fell short, telling the populace on both sides during the Civil War that God was on their side, but as the author quotes Lincoln as observing, one side must be wrong.

Then and now, reasoned discussions and diplomacy largely failed and some Americans are openly talking about a potential Civil War II.

They would not if we absorbed some of the lessons from this book.

ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യ കഥാകാരന്മാരിൽ പ്രമുഖനായ ജൊനാതൻ സ്വിഫ്റ്റിന്റെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് കൃതിയാണ് ഗള്ളിവറുടെ യാത്രകൾ. ഒരു പാടുദൂരെയുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്ക് യാത്രചെയ്യേണ്ടി വരുമെന്ന തോന്നലിൽ നാവിഗേഷൻ പഠിക്കുന്ന ഗള്ളിവർ, കപ്പലിൽ സർജനായി തന്റെ യാത്രകൾ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.  നാല് വിചിത്രരാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ കൂടിയുള്ള സാഹസികയാത്ര രസകരമാണ്. ആന്റിലോപ് എന്ന കപ്പലിലെ യാത്രയിൽ കപ്പൽ തകരുകയും ഗള്ളിവർ കുള്ളൻമാരുടെ രാജ്യമായ ലില്ലിപ്പുട്ടിൽ എത്തപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ലില്ലിപ്പുട്ടിലെ ഇത്തിരിപ്പോന്ന (ആറിഞ്ചിൽ കവിയാത്ത) മനുഷ്യജീവികളും അവരുടെ നിയമവും രാജാവും രാജ്യവും രസകരമായി വിവരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

"രാജാവിന്റെ വേഷം അതിലളിതമായിരുന്നു. തലയിൽ കനം കുറഞ്ഞതും രത്നങ്ങൾ പതിച്ചതും മുകളിൽ തൂവൽ പിടിച്ചതുമായ ഒരു സ്വർണ്ണത്തൊപ്പി ധരിച്ചിരുന്നു.കൈയിൽ ഒരു വാളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ബന്ധങ്ങൾ പൊട്ടിച്ച് ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആക്രമിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചാലോ എന്നു ഭയന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാവണം! വാളിന് ഏകദേശം മൂന്നിഞ്ച് നീളമുണ്ടാവും. അതിന്റെ പിടിയും ഉറയുമെല്ലാം സ്വർണംകൊണ്ടുള്ളതുമാണ്. തിരുമനസ് എന്നോട് എന്തൊക്കെയോ ചോദിച്ചു. ഞാൻ മറുപടി പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു. പക്ഷേ രണ്ടു പേർക്കും ഒന്നും മനസ്സിലായില്ല!"

കുള്ളൻമാരുടെ നാട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപെട്ട് സ്വന്തം രാജ്യത്ത് എത്തിയെങ്കിലും യാത്രയോടുള്ള അഭിനിവേശം കെട്ടടങ്ങിയിരുന്നില്ല. അടുത്തയാത്രയിൽ എത്തപ്പെട്ടത് ഭീമാകാരൻമാരായവരുടെ നാട്ടിലാണ്. ഈ ലോകത്ത് ഏതൊക്കെ തരത്തിലുള്ള ആളുകൾ ജീവിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് യൂറോപ്യൻമാർക്ക് അറിയാൻ തന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ വച്ച് ഒരു പുസ്തകം എഴുതാൻ ഭീമൻമാരുടെ നാട്ടിൽനിന്ന് രക്ഷിച്ച കപ്പിത്താൻ ഗള്ളിവറോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. മനുഷ്യന്റെ വിഡ്ഢിത്തങ്ങൾ പരിഹസിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കൃതിയായി ഗള്ളിവറുടെ യാത്രകളെ കാണാം.

യാത്രയിലെ സാഹസികതകൾ ഗള്ളിവർക്ക് യാത്രയോട് ഇഷ്ടം കൂട്ടുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. പത്ത് ദിവസത്തെ വിശ്രമത്തിന് ശേഷം അടുത്തയാത്രയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറെടുക്കുന്നു ഗള്ളിവർ. ലാപുട്ടക്കാരുടെ ഒഴുകുന്ന ദ്വീപിലെ അനുഭവങ്ങളും,ജപ്പാൻ യാത്രയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ്. യാത്രകളിൽ നിന്ന് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലേക്കാണ് ഗള്ളിവർ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്. 'അഡ്വഞ്ചർ' എന്ന കപ്പലിലെ യാത്ര, ജീവിതം തന്നെ മാറ്റിമറിക്കുന്ന അനുഭവങ്ങളാണ് സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്.  സൗഹൃദവും ദയയും സ്വഭാവവിശേഷങ്ങളായ കുതിരകളുടെ (ഹ്വീനംസ് )നാട്ടിലെ ജീവിതം, അവരുടെ നാട്ടിലെ നീചമൃഗങ്ങളായ യാഹൂവുമായുള്ള രൂപ സാദൃശ്യവും... സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും. എന്തായാലും ആ നാട്ടിലെ ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെ "ഒരുപാട് മാനുഷിക ദുസ്സ്വഭാവങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാതായി" എന്ന് ഗള്ളിവർ തന്നെ വിലയിരുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.

വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ ഉറപ്പായും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട പുസ്തകമാണ് ബാലസാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ഈ ക്ലാസിക് കൃതി.

If you’re going to write about seedy underbellies and strange subcultures, then follow the road map created by Scott Phillips: Make it funny, make it ribald, make it memorable. That’s what Phillips has been doing ever since his lauded 2000 debut, “The Ice Harvest.”

THE DEVIL RAISES HIS OWN (Soho Crime, 368 pp., $27.95) is his latest novel to feature the photographer Bill Ogden, who was first seen in “Cottonwood,” set on the Kansas frontier in 1872.

Now, more than four decades removed from his “Cottonwood” shenanigans, he’s living in Los Angeles, still able to work (and score), albeit more slowly. His granddaughter, Flavia, fresh off killing her husband back in Kansas (“I recently collapsed Albert’s cranial vault,” she says), has taken on partner/successor duties at his photography studio. Both are pulled into the orbit of the “blue movie” industry — milder in 1916, to be sure, but still prone to violence — where they encounter a vivid, pungent cast of scoundrels and flimflam artists, from a film star named Magnolia Sweetspire to a mousy postal inspector named Melvin de Kamp.

Phillips always adopts a wonderfully deadpan air, but beneath his black humor is a steely emotional core. “The Devil Raises His Own” is a romp, but it’s also a poignant exploration of chosen families, broken homes and desperate dreams.
