Basic search

Query building guidance.

To start a quick lookup, enter a single patent or publication number and select the Search button. To start a basic search, select a search field, enter your search term, and select the Search button.

For example, to search for the keywords 'horse blanket', select Everything from both of the Basic Search dropdowns. Type 'horse' in the top text box, select 'AND' from the Operator dropdown, type 'blanket' in the bottom text box, and select the Search button.

Formatting rules for searching are as follows:

• One word per text box
• Before Patent Numbers with 6 digits or less to make 7 total digits - ex: 123456 should be entered as 0123456 - ex: 12345 should be entered as 0012345
• After the year to make 11 total digits for Application Publication numbers: - ex: 2021123456 should be entered as 20210123456
• If using Publication Date, the date format should be YYYYMMDD (e.g. 20221230)

For example, to search for the inventor ‘John Smith,’ select Inventor Name from both of the Basic Search dropdowns. Type ‘John’ in the top text box, select 'AND' from the Operator dropdown, type ‘Smith’ in the bottom text box, and select the Search button.

Affected systems will be unavailable during this period and include:

• Patent Public Search Database (PPUBS)

• Assignment Center
• Office of Enrollment and Discipline Patent Practitioner Home Page
• Fees Self-Service Portal
• Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS)
• Trademark Electronic Application System International (TEASi)
• Trademark Search
• Patent Assignment Search
• Trademark Assignment Search
• Patent Center eOffice Action notifications will begin by 10 a.m. ET  

The  USPTO website  should remain available.

​Patent Public Search (PPUBs) Maintenance

The USPTO will perform maintenance on PPUBs from midnight-2 a.m. ET on Saturday, May 4.  

During this deployment period, PPUBs will be unavailable.

Server Maintenance 

Credit card payment maintenance.

Due to third-party system maintenance activities, credit/debit card payments will not be accepted from 6-10 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 4.  

During the maintenance period, the following USPTO storefronts will be unable to accept credit/debit card payments:

    • Patent Center

    • Patent Trial and Appeal Case Tracking System (P-TACTS)

    • Patent Maintenance Fees Storefront (FPNG)

    • Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS)

    • Trademark Electronic Application System International (TEASI)

    • Electronic System for Trademark Trials and Appeals (ESTTA)

    • Assignment Center (IPAS)

    • Office of Enrollment and Discipline Customer Interface (OEDCI)

    • Certified Copy Center (CCC)

Customers with an already established USPTO Deposit Account or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Account may still pay using one of these payment methods during the maintenance window.

If you are unable to wait until the maintenance activity has concluded to pay a fee, the following alternative options are available:

Patent Customers: For more information about filing documents during an outage, please visit:  https://www.uspto.gov/patents-application-process/filing-online/filing-documents-during-outage. 

If you require assistance with the online fee payment management system, please contact the USPTO Contact Center via the following telephone numbers: 

    • 800-786-9199 (toll-free)  

    • 571-272-1000 (local)

    • 800-877-8339 (TTY) 

Support for the online fee payment management system, and USPTO.gov accounts, is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET (except federal holidays).

PTAB Customers:  If your deadline is today for the petition filing and/or other associated documents to a pending America Invents Act (AIA) case and you cannot file electronically via the Patent Trial and Appeal Case Tracking System, (P-TACTS) you may use an alternative filing method. Please visit the PTAB-E2E FAQ page:  P-TACTS FAQs (uspto.gov)  and see A2 for information concerning your America Invents Act (AIA) petition filing and/or document filing using P-TACTS alternative filing methods. If you have any questions, contact PTAB during normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., ET by telephone at 571-272-7822 or email at  [email protected] .

Trademark Customers:  Filing deadlines that fall on a Saturday extend the filing deadline to the next business day. Please try filing again after the maintenance ends.  If you have any questions, contact the TEAS Team by email at  [email protected] .

TTAB Customers:  Please visit the TTAB Outage Page:  https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/ttab/filing-ttab-documents-during-outage  for information concerning Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) alternative filing methods. If you have any questions, contact the TTAB Assistance Center during normal business hours by telephone at 571-272-8500 or email  [email protected] .

Trilateral Dossier Access (TDA) Maintenance

The USPTO will perform routine maintenance on the Trilateral Dossier Access (TDA) systems from midnight-5:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, May 7.

During the maintenance period, TDA will not be available.

P-OA2XML Maintenance

The USPTO will perform routine maintenance on P-OA2XML from midnight-5:30 a.m.ET on Tuesday, May 7.

During the maintenance period, DOCX and XML downloads will not be available in Private PAIR and Patent Center.

Publication Site for Issued and Published Sequences (PSIPS) Maintenance

The USPTO will perform routine maintenance on PSIPS systems from midnight-5:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, May 7.

During the maintenance period, PSIPS will be unavailable.

Users should refrain from attempting to submit new search requests during the maintenance period.
