Economics degree personal statement example (2j)

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our .

The current economic turndown has dramatically increased the publics' awareness and interest in the economy and how it functions; I learnt that people are more concerned with current economic activity than they are with political activity whilst undertaking a survey in my local town centre. I discovered Economics at A-Level and have developed a deep interest in the subject; especially the areas of the labour market and business economics because I enjoy seeing real life economics in action and being able to critique theories in relation to real world economic activity.

In order to correct the current financial crisis, it is my opinion that the government should be more interventionist through specific laws for the banking sector rather than through influence. This is because the 'Credit Crunch' was caused by excessive lending of money by banks to people who were betting on further economic growth, who then defaulted on their loans. It is also imperative that unemployment does not increase. The government could increase employment by introducing demand-side policies, thus increasing the demand for labour, backed up with supply side fiscal policy to reduce blockages. I stated my opinion when I was selected as a representative for my school to be interviewed by a local newspaper about how Britain could amend its economy.

I have read a range of Economic related books including 'Freakonomics', and 'The Undercover Economist'. I enjoy how these books are fighting to change people’s perceptions of economics as a ‘boring’ subject only concerned with statistics by showing the economics used in everyday life, and what shapes the decisions we make. In order to expand my knowledge of Economic History, I am currently reading 'The Age Of Extremes' which gives a detailed and analytical view of 20th century economies; from Stalin, to 1920's America and Margaret Thatcher's economic ideals. I refuse to read The Economist as I find it too willing to support liberalist ideas - I prefer the blogs on www.tutor2u.net to gain in-depth and contemporary economic news.

Analysis has a prominent role in each of my A-Level subjects. I have enhanced my substantial analytical skills, able to evaluate economic policies with the "EEES" principle - is a policy effective, efficient, equitable or sustainable? By studying History, I have seen that people reacted badly to economic changes; for example the Community Charge was quickly followed by the infamous Poll Tax riots. Psychology has empowered me to study social mechanisms such as obedience to authority and conformity, and I enjoy reading thought provoking books about society such as '1984', 'Fahrenheit 451' and 'Catch 22', as these books allow me to view society from a critical angle. Travelling has given me experience of how economies can differ first hand; Bulgaria is characterised as a struggling transitional economy, whereas America shows the effects of laissez- faire and private enterprise.

Although I was originally disappointed when I learnt I had not secured a place at university last year, I have since realised it was a blessing in disguise. I have had the opportunity to en-roll at college to gain an A-level in Mathematics as well as teaching myself Spanish at home. I am doing this to further my goal of working in the City; mathematics is a core component in any financial environment and in a world where globalisation is becoming increasing prominent, an ability to speak a second language will be of paramount importance.

I have been snowboarding for six years and have travelled across the USA and numerous countries in Europe to extend and perfect my hobby, as well as learn about cultures different to my own. Pursuing percussion for seven years allowed me to develop my creativity and gain Grade 2 Distinction.

I would welcome the challenge of pursing a degree in Economics with a possible view to teach this great subject in the future. I would look to contribute fully to university life with my diverse range of interests.

  • UEA (LC18) - AAB
  • Sheffield (L100) - Rejected

Economics Personal Statement

The right answer – does such a thing even exist? When considering the field of mathematics, my response would be an unequivocal yes – indeed, I find its simplicity and elegance some of its most attractive qualities. For economics, however, the question of a right answer is not so straightforward. My interest in economics was sparked when I read “Freakonomics” and “SuperFreakonomics”. I found the search for a logical explanation behind seemingly illogical behaviour intriguing, and the idea that small changes to incentives could effect such large changes to those behaviours fascinating.

To further my understanding, I attended lectures at the LSE, including one given by Ha-Joon Chang. His arguments challenged much of what I had learned – deregulation and trade liberalisation would not, apparently, stimulate competitive growth, while education, it turned out, could not be counted on to increase entrepreneurship or productivity. These contradictions made me eager to read his “23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism” and “Bad Samaritans”. Although relishing his controversial stance on almost everything, I found his central thesis – that by using protectionism to support fledgling domestic industries, other poor nations can emulate South Korea’s success – overly optimistic and one-size-fits-all. As Paul Collier argues in “The Bottom Billion”, many are trapped by conflict or bad governance, with even bleaker prospects after “missing the boat” on which many Asian economies sailed away to prosperity.

While economics is rooted in the world around us, with all its fascinating, messy complexities, mathematics derives its beauty from its abstract nature. It is unique in that it can lead us to an answer that is not merely the right one, but is true in an absolute sense. This was emphasised by G. H. Hardy in “A Mathematician’s Apology”, where he spoke of a mathematical reality distinct from the ordinary one, of which we can only ever hope to produce a “partial and imperfect copy”. Another of the appeals of mathematics is its breadth of application. I was able to explore this over the past three years in a series of Royal Institution master classes covering topics from graph theory to the mathematics of juggling. My decision to continue with mathematics was confirmed when I undertook the AEA; I found it challenging but immensely satisfying to be able to use simple concepts from the A-level core modules to solve even the most daunting problems.

Over the past year, I have mentored two students in mathematics. Explaining concepts to them helped deepen my own understanding and led me to explore proofs behind theorems I had previously accepted. In addition, acting as a primary school classroom assistant inspired me to set up my own volunteering scheme, in which I and other students help children learn to read. I have enjoyed competing in the UKMT Mathematics Challenge, in which I won a medal at Olympiad level, and the UK Linguistics Olympiad, in which I twice progressed to the selection round for the national team. I have also represented my school in the Hans Woyda competition, and am excited to be doing the same in the Target 2.0 challenge later this year.

Despite their differences, the authors I mentioned above hold something in common: their use of empirical methods to reach conclusions. It is here that the attraction of combining the study of mathematics and economics becomes especially apparent. Without mathematics, economics risks beginning to earn its title “the dismal science”, reducing to speculation and rhetoric without even the emotional investment enjoyed by politics. This is not to dismiss the importance of normative economics, but to say that it draws meaning from a basis in fact. I am not arguing for sound bite solutions to complex questions, but rather that, even in a field as hotly debated as economics, the right answer is still a worthwhile goal, reachable through the use of data and copious amounts of trial and error.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

This statement is thoughtful and interesting, and conveys clear motivations for studying Economics, as well as demonstrating a good level of preparation for university study. The student elaborates on their response to each preparatory activity they engaged in, rather than falling into the trap of simply listing books read and lectures attended. They are clearly passionate about the subject, and show promise as an economist, which they demonstrate in, again, not only listing their achievements, but explaining what they took from the experience, and subtly indicating what this says about them as a student.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

I have very little to say in criticism of this essay except that, perhaps, it could come across as a little cliché. Questioning whether there is such a thing as ‘the right answer’ in the introduction, and concluding that pursuit of the field to which they’re applying for further study is worthy are both very common.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

This is an exceptional personal statement. Not only is the student accomplished, they convey this without bragging, and in enough detail that we gain insight into their abilities, motivations, and personal interests, rather than simply receiving a list in prose form. Though the ideas with which the student begins and concludes the statement are somewhat unoriginal, the explanation found in between is exceptionally strong, and justifies the unoriginal sentiments – they’re clearly not being added just as throwaway lines.

This Personal Statement for Chemistry is a great example of demonstrating motivation and development which is vital to Admissions Tutors.

Remember, at Cambridge, these Admissions Tutors are often the people who will be teaching you for the next few years, so you need to appeal directly to them.

Economics and accounting personal statement example.

Accounting to me is not just a subject, but a life skill. It invokes not only the core disciplines of business and economics but it provides these in both a local and global context.

I see Accounting as an international common language between businesses, to analyse accounts and influence future decisions companies will make.

The application of business within the accounting degree has been one of the major pulling factors that have influenced my decision to study the subject.

After studying GCSE business and discovering the accounting and finance aspect of it, I have become fascinated to learn more, going on to extend my knowledge of the subject by reading outside of the school environment.

As an avid reader of the Accounting blog on the tutor2u website, I have gained a good grounding in the fundamental application of accounting, especially in the way websites such as ‘facebook’s’ growth is driven by their own growth through advertising, and the fact that their books and accounts continue to stay cash flow positive, despite their impressive rate of expansion.

I am particularly interested in the law aspect of the course and how decisions made can influence an individuals’ desire to defraud their accounts to avoid taxation, and the often extensive amount of time it takes to bring these people to justice.

Although initially studying psychology may not seem to have a direct influence on accounting, I feel the knowledge I have learnt about the interaction of people’s behaviour in social situations will help me greatly. This would especially be within the aspects of the course that involve management methods and organisational behaviour.

By studying Economics at A level I have found that it has had a profound effect on accounting.

The understanding I have acquired of the financial world as a whole has provided me with a strong awareness of international sections of the course. The barrier for trade inside and outside of the EU and how this affects profit margins, with relevance to extra costs on balance sheets is one example.

This awareness will help equip me to have a better understanding of real world accounting situations, where I hope to find my self in the future.

Last summer I was accepted on a two week work experience placement at the Bank of England to do shadowing and accounting of my own, however due to circumstances beyond my own control, it fell through, much to my disappointment. Nevertheless I have tried to keep in touch with current Accounting developments through the newspapers and internet.

I am currently completing my silver Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and I am planning an eight day trip, alongside “World Challenge Organisation”, to Norway next summer for my Gold expedition. The trip will be funded entirely through the money my team raise. I feel these experiences have helped me develop valuable life skills such as the desire to achieve, self-confidence and discipline.

I believe that these skills I have learnt will provide the perfect platform for a degree in accounting and aid me on into the workplace. I also play hockey for the North of England and have captained both Yorkshire and South Yorkshire sides as well as my School and Club teams.

Hockey is a major part of my extracurricular life, giving me teamwork and leadership skills and I feel I could contribute greatly to a wide range of university activities.

I look forward to studying accounting at degree level. This will allow my interest in the subject to flourish. I hope to immerse myself fully in the experience and challenges the university will provide.
