The Effects of the Use of Google Translate on Translation Students’ Learning Outcomes

This paper investigates the effects of uncontrolled use of Google Translate (GT) on the development of students’ translation skills. It aims to find out if the current patterns of GT use by translation students could impact their learning outcomes, and if so, in what ways. The study uses think-aloud data from actual translation efforts of four students. Analysis of the four subjects’ translations show that their overreliance on GT for first drafts reduced their propensity to search for equivalents. However, when students post-edit poorly constructed GT sentences, they carry out a process of analysis and synthesis similar to the process of translating from scratch. The study concludes that post-editing GT translation is beneficial for translation students’ development of translation skills, but it warns against introducing or allowing its use at the elementary stages of translation training.

The present research entitled An Analysis of Translation Procedures Used by Google Translate in Translating the Grammatical Hierarchies aims at analyzing the translation procedures and identifying the translation quality of Google Translate products. A qualitative method was used to analyze the research. In analyzing the data, the researcher refers to some theories of translation procedures proposed by Peter Newmark (1988), Vinay & Darbelnet (1995 in Fawcet,1997) and Larson (1984) and a number of theories of translation quality proposed by Larson (1984), Tytler (1907), Nida and Taber (1982), Tytler (1791 in Basnett, 2002), Massoud (1988 in Abdellah, 2002), and El Shafey (1985 in Abdellah, 2002). The results of data analysis shows that there are seven procedures found in Google Translate products: literal (99 items or 49,5%), couplets and triplets (69 items or 34,5%), transposition (16 items or 8%), transference/borrowing (7 items or 3,5%), paraphrase (5 items or 2,5%), synonymy (3 items or 1,5%), and naturalization (one item or 0,5%). The second finding shows that the translation products of Google Translate is good or acceptable in translating words. On the other hand, the translation quality of GT products was quite unacceptable or inappropriate in translating phrases, clauses and sentences because the meaning was not delivered properly and therefore before using GT to translate phrases, clauses, and sentences, the users have to recheck the results of translation. Based on percentages of acceptable translation (82,5%) and unacceptable (17,5%). In the words level, there are more acceptable items (50 items). In the phrases level, there are 42 acceptable items and 8 unacceptable items. In the clauses level, there are 41 acceptable items and 9 unacceptable items. In the sentences level, there are more unacceptable items (18 items) and 32 acceptable items. Furthemore, the total selected items are 200 items (50 words, 50 phrase, 50 clauses, and 50 sentences). The total acceptable items are 165 items from 200 items and unacceptable items are 35 items from 200 items. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukan ada tujuh prosedur ditemukan di hasil penerjemahan Google Translate :literal (99 item or 49,5%), couplets and triplets (69 item or 34,5%), transposition (16 item atau 8%), transference/borrowing (7 item atau 3,5%), paraphrase (5 item atau 2,5%), synonymy (3 item atau 1,5%), and naturalization (1 item atau 0,5%). Adapun temuan kedua memperlihatkan bahwa hasil penerjemahan Google Translate itu bagus dalam menerjemahkan kata. Disamping itu, kualitas penerjemahan Google Translate tidak baik dalam menerjemahkan frase, klausa dan kalimat karena arti nya tidak tersampaikan dengan baik dan jadi sebelum menggunakan Google Translate untuk menerjemahkan frase, klausa dan kalimat, pengguna Google Translate harus mengecek kembali hasil penerjemahannya. Berdasarkan persentase penerjemahan yang dapat diterima sebesar 82,5% dan yang tidak dapat diterima sebesar 17,5%. Pada level kata, terdapat banyak penerjemahan yang dapat diterima sebesar 50 item. Pada level frase, terdapat 42 penerjemahan yang dapat diterima dan 8 yang tidak dapat diterima. Pada level klausa, terdapat 41 penerjemahan yang dapat diterima dan 9 yang tidak dapat diterima. Pada level kalimat, terdapat 18 penejemahan yang tidak dapat dterima dan 32 yang dapat diterima. Jadi, jumlah sampel penelitian adalad 200 item (50 kata, 50 frase, 50 klausa dan 50 kalimat). Jumla penerjemahan yang dapat diterima adalah 165 item dari 200 item dan yang tidak dapat diterima sebesar 35 item dari 200 item. Metatranslation presents a selection of 14 key essays by leading theorist, Theo Hermans, covering a span of almost 40 years. The essays trace Hermans’ work and demonstrate how translation studies has evolved from the 1980s into the much more diverse and self-reflexive discipline it is today.

The book is divided into three main sections: the first section explores the status and central concerns of translation studies, including the growing interest in sociological, ideological and ethical approaches to translation; the second section investigates the key concepts of translation norms and of the translator’s presence, or positioning, in translated texts; the historical essays in the final section are concerned with both modern and early modern discourses on translation and with the use of translation as an instrument of war and propaganda.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the current curriculum for M.A. English translation in Iranian universities regarding the students’ perspectives to find its deficiencies and to propose some recommendations to make the curriculum compatible with students’ needs. The study was done based on a quantitative research design using a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was administrated to 341 M.A. and Ph.D. translation students in Iran. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed in descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test. The results revealed that the current curriculum was moderately effective in providing the students with the necessary translation competencies. This study sought to evaluate the graduate program of Translation Studies in terms of training expert translators in the field of humanities and social sciences. In so doing, 87 students studying in the first and third semesters from Islamic Azad University at Central Tehran, South Tehran, and Science and Research Center were selected and they participated in the study. Accordingly, the students were first homogenized based on their general English Proficiency and then took a translation ability test consisting of four different texts. The translations were scored according to Hurtodo’s rubric by three raters who enjoyed inter-rater consistency. Based on the statistical analysis of the gathered data, it was concluded that the third-semester students showed higher mean scores on the four types of the translation texts all of which were statistically significant. Thus the null hypothesis of this study stating that the MA Translation Studies program had no significant effect on the students’ translation ability was rejected.

Research in English Language Pedagogy

This study aims to investigate the program of Translation Studies, offered in Iranian universities at the level of Master, in terms of its curriculum through a needs analysis model offered by Altschuld and Witkin (1995). To do so, after a review of the related literature and conducting a documentary analysis, the researchers chose to look at the issue from different perspectives. Current instructors, professionals who are involved in the business of translation and a number of graduated students were interviewed so as to gather enough data to design a questionnaire, which constitute the backbone of the study. Since the study aims at students' perception, the survey was conducted on students of Translation Studies program, which was based on the interviews with instructors, graduates of the program and the professionals working in the market. Afterward, the questionnaire data were gathered and, subsequently, went under statistical procedures. Based on the results, the researchers came up with practical recommendations for curriculum renewal, based on the needs-analysis model adopted. As this study has adopted a triangulation approach to investigate the curriculum, the results and recommendations, although limited, can be of great use to educators, curriculum developers and translator trainers in particular.

The present study, in the first place, attempted to examine the relationship between the theoretical knowledge of translation and practical translation skills in Iranian translators. For this purpose, 35 M.A students both males and females studying English translation were selected in Mashhad Ferdowsi University in Iran. In order to collect data two tests were applied: one made up of questions selected from the Ph.D and M.A entrance exams together with a test of actual translation from Persian to English and the reverse. English and Persian translator training have been offered by many Iranian universities as an undergraduate program nation-wide. However, the program failed to keep up with the dynamics of the market demands, findings of Translation Studies research, and varied competences of students in the past two decades. This study investigated the Iranian English translator trainees’ perspectives on the former curriculum that was used for over twenty years. The study was aimed at investigating the effectiveness of methods of teaching Translation Courses (TCs) used by Iranian instructors on English-major students’ translation proficiency development. To this end, 156 homogeneous students were selected as the participants to undergo quantitative and qualitative data collection simultaneously through a convergent parallel mixed methods design.
