About the Film

In 1997, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi under one condition: the prom had to be racially integrated. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman offered again. This time the school board accepted, and history was made. Charleston High School had its first-ever integrated prom – in 2008. Until then, blacks and whites had had separate proms even though their classrooms have been integrated for decades. Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman follows students, teachers and parents in the lead-up to the big day. This seemingly inconsequential rite of passage suddenly becomes profound as the weight of history falls on teenage shoulders. We quickly learn that change does not come easily in this sleepy Delta town. Freeman’s generosity fans the flames of racism – and racism in Charleston has a distinctly generational tinge. Some white parents forbid their children to attend the integrated prom and hold a separate white-only dance. “Billy Joe,” an enlightened white senior, appears on camera in shadow, fearing his racist parents will disown him if they know his true feelings. PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI captures a big moment in a small town, where hope finally blossoms in black, white and a whole lot of taffeta. -David Courier, Sundance Film Festival.

Filmmaker’s Statement | Paul Saltzman

In the summer of 1965, I was in the Mississippi Delta doing voter registration work with SNCC—the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee—and, like many other civil rights workers, was assaulted and jailed.

Mississippi was known to us as “the belly of the beast” of southern racism and segregation. The KKK was strong there. The White Citizen’s Council—the “white collar Klan” as they were referred to—was strong there. And as a “northerner,” in fact, a foreigner, since I had driven south from my home in Canada, I was somewhat shocked to discover some of the great institutions of America: the Boy Scouts, the Girl Guides, the YMCA, the Howard Johnson, even washrooms and drinking fountains, were segregated in the south.

For over forty years I thought about how race relations might have changed, or not changed, since I had been there. In 2007, I decided to find out. I bought my first video camera and flew down to Jackson. I had no plan or script or funding. I just wanted to talk with ordinary folks, black and white, young and old, racist and not racist, and encourage them to share their stories and feelings around matters of race. After renting a car and driving around the Delta, where I had mainly been in ’65, it became a personal documentary, a road movie: ‘Return to Mississippi.’

I met Morgan Freeman and filmed with him at his home in the small town of Charleston, Mississippi, population, 2,100. He, too, had returned to Mississippi where he grew up, saying he felt safer there than anywhere else in America.

On the one hand, I learned that Mississippi had come further in race relations than any State in the Union since the ’60s—with the highest per capita black elected officials, black police chiefs and black fire chiefs. But then I found out something that seemed too strange to be true. I heard from a young woman that her integrated high school still held separate proms: one white prom and one black prom. If this was true, I wanted to include that as part of the film. I then learned that this prom was held in Morgan’s home town, and that a decade prior, Morgan had offered to pay to integrate the high school prom, but was rebuffed. I asked Morgan about it, and he confirmed the story. I asked if he was willing to try again, and he said yes. So a meeting was set up with Morgan at the school board office, and we began filming a second feature documentary: ‘Prom Night in Mississippi.’

Not knowing what would result, I funded the shooting. Tallahatchie County is the poorest in Mississippi and, likely, the poorest in the country. Some of the townsfolk were worried we had come to make them look bad. To win the confidence of the students, parents and school staff we moved to Mississippi and lived in the community for four months, culminating with the town’s first-ever, integrated prom.

Many of the senior students, black and white, impressed me with their openness and awareness. Their courage to attend their first “mixed prom” and to share their feelings about race gives me hope that we are indeed heading in the right direction, hope that more change will come in the next few years than in the entire 43 years since I was last in Mississippi.

A character describes underage drinking in a limousine on the night of the "white" prom, saying students were "getting tipsy, getting crazy." Another student claims that some students drink and "get drunk every weekend."

Audible words include mild terms like "ass" and "hell," as well as a few unbleeped instances of "f--k." The "N" word is also used quite a bit, both as a hate and a non-hate term.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Some students discuss having sex, with a focus on the perceived "fear" of interracial sex. Another student talks about having had both African-American and Caucasian “lovers” and asserts that they’re all the same; it’s what’s inside that counts.

Violence & Scariness

An archival image of a dead African-American man hanging from a tree is shown while a student talks about another hanging that took place in the town square. Another student describes a verbal fight between a Caucasian student and an African-American student that escalated due to the Caucasian student's allegations that the other student threatened her with a gun; another recounts a fight that broke out at the "white" prom between two students and a parent, who slapped one of the rabblerousers. At the integrated prom, male and female students engage in a dance battle that looks violent (ie., it involves some body pushing/intimidation) but isn’t meant to be.

The soundtrack includes songs by popular artists like Lil Wayne , Usher , Feist , and One Republic . Rap act Kamikaze plays at the prom.

Positive Messages

The movie reinforces the idea that people are just people -- no matter the color of their skin -- and that change is truly possible if you work for it.

Positive Role Models

Most of the student leaders who support the integrated prom -- both Caucasian and African American -- have admirable qualities. For example, one student-athlete is not only a state champion power lifter who's involved in softball, basketball, track, and church; she also takes college-level algebra, has skipped a grade, and holds the office of National Honor Society president.

Parents need to know that this documentary's frank discussion of a sensitive topic -- racism -- includes some unbleeped swearing and racist language, including regular use of "N" word by both African Americans and Caucasians. Some violent acts are described, including fist fights between students, and there's a brief shot of a particularly grizzly photo of a dead man hanging from a tree. Students also talk about underage sex and drinking, but most of the teens who are prominently featured are positive role models. What's the Story?

Filmmaker Paul Saltzman captures history in the making in PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI, an honest yet inspirational documentary about lingering racism in the deep South and a small-town Mississippi high school's first integrated prom. The kicker, of course, is that this momentous occasion takes place in 2008 -- not the 1950s. To give graduating seniors an incentive to partipate, local celebrity Morgan Freeman presents the idea as a challenge and offers to pay all costs. In the end, it's a story about change and the pockets of resistance that try to stop it.

Is It Any Good?

When it comes to content, Saltzman respects viewers' intelligence by refusing to candy coat the issue of racism, presenting candid comments from students who are all too willing to talk about it. For example, one African-American student describes a humilating incident in which the police pulled him and a Caucasian friend over, claiming they smelled marijuana. The cops made the first student drop his pants in public, while they left his friend alone. Another Caucasian student shares her father's reaction to the idea of an integrated prom: "N---ers ain't gonna be rubbin' up against my daughter."

Prom Night in Mississippi might not be as zippy as some other documentaries about high school life (including American Teen ), but it's both sobering and refreshing in its honesty, making it a must-see for families with teens who are mature enough to handle the film's complex themes.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

How do stereotypes play into racism? Have you ever made a snap judgment about someone based on the color of their skin -- or anything else about their outward appearance?

Why is the South so often associated with racism? Do you think that -- particularly with the election of Barack Obama -- racism is less of an issue in the United States than it used to be? Why or why not?

What if Morgan Freeman hadn't presented students with the idea of an integrated prom and offered to pay for it? How long do you think it would have taken for the school to integrate proms on its own? Do you think the fact that the process was covered by a film crew influenced the outcome in any way?

Prom Night In Mississippi

prom night in mississippi essay

Charleston High School in Charleston Mississippi finally integrated in 1970, the local school district having joined much of the American South in mounting “massive resistance” against the 1954 Brown V. Board decision that allegedly ended Jim Crow education. Even after 1970, life remained divided by racial lines and, at Charleston High School, the senior prom itself remained segregated.

In 1997, academy award wining actor, and Mississippi native, Morgan Freeman offered to pay for an integrated prom. The school board refused. In 2008, Freeman made the offer again and it was accepted — at least officially.

Prom Night in Mississippi tells what happened next. This important documentary by filmmaker Paul Saltzman explores the role of race in a small southern town. Told almost entirely from the perspective of students, this is a film about young people struggling under the enormous weight of history they did not make and trying to describe their experience in the limited and obfuscating language of race that American society has provided them. Exuberantly hopeful, it also demands that the viewer ask tough questions about the state of race in America.

The great achievement of Prom Night in Mississippi is it ability to bring the viewer fully and completely into the sub-culture of a small southern high school in the most rural part of an extraordinarily rural state. Undoubtedly creating vertiginous culture shock for many viewers, this quick immersion allows us to quickly get to know the students of the senior class whose lives are scarred by the legacy and living reality of racism.

We meet a young African American who cannot even imagine the possibility of dating a white person, a young white woman threatened with violence by her step-father for having an African American friend, and a young white woman, very much in love with her African American boyfriend, but also facing the deeply befuddled disapproval of her father, a self-described “redneck” who hopes fervently that his daughter’s interracial relationship will end.

Some viewers might feel that the film’s angle of vision is highly limited. We are only introduced to those who disapprove of the integrated prom through a student who refused to give his real name and is only filmed in shadow and by a lawyer for a group of parents who sought to hold, incredibly, a rival “whites only” prom. These same parents refuse to talk to the camera because, in the words of their lawyer, they might be perceived as “racists and hypocritical.” No shit, Sherlock.

Does this damage an otherwise excellent documentary film? Saltzman talks in a very illuminating 22-minute interview bundled with the DVD’s extras about his own concerns about this missing element. Could he tell an authentic story without more from that part of the community that unrepentantly held to their reactionary attitudes and viewed the prom as a pitched battle over cultural and racial change?

I found myself feeling that Saltzman had done a real service by keeping the racist naysayers from spewing their ugliness into his story. After all, do we really need to hear more of the half-formed thoughts that comprise racism in the United States, the vacillations and posturing that make up the new and confusing conservative language of race that begins sentences with the tell-tale “I’m not racist or anything but…?” It is much more compelling to listen to teenagers struggling to make sense of what it means to grow up in a social world where racism has structured their lives while also encountering people of a different race as schoolmates, friends and lovers.

The DVD extras on this documentary are excellent and further illuminate this important story. In one deleted segment, the filmmaker’s attempt to shoot at a National Guard armory where the “white prom” will be held and are sent away by local police and a representative of the National Guard, raising all kinds of questions about why a Federal official is aiding and abetting a discriminatory function held at a Federal military installation.

In another deleted scene, we hear more from the “white prom” parent’s lawyer Jeff Padgett, whose description of his client’s activities reads like a primer for the talking points of neo-conservative “new racism”. Padgett talks about tension between the races as if a moral equivalency exists between the prejudices of both groups and puts forward the canard that segregating a social function is really all about “safety”. What is most terrifying about this is that such language is not only the language of a small-town Mississippi lawyer — it often makes its way into American political discourse.

This is a vitally important film for an allegedly post-racial society. The election of Barack Obama meant many things to Americans, and its historic significance cannot be limited to a single variable. But it’s true that for some whites it meant a vote to redeem their very real, and much deserved, sense of racial guilt. For many young people, the election became a symbol that racism is dead, that it no longer matters in the American cultural conversation. This is naïveté of both the past and the present.

This is a film that easily evokes righteous indignation about the way things worked, and in many places still work, in the American South. A segregated prom is, after all, an especially egregious and shocking symbol of ignorance. But what about segregated urban environments where black and white do not live together? Or the fact that in much of the United States, statistics of life expectancy, infant mortality, unemployment and imprisonment can be traced along a racial vector? On prom night in Mississippi, the lines are drawn in bold colors; in other places the lines run deeper and cannot be seen without a second, hard, look.

Sharing a Dance, History Afoot

  • Share full article

By Ginia Bellafante

  • July 19, 2009

During last year’s presidential election, videos from the campaign trail surfaced, on YouTube and political blogs, confirming any reasonable person’s worst fears about racial views held by poor, uneducated white Americans. If you’re living in a Whole Foods bubble, it’s hard to see virulent prejudice expressed explicitly. “Prom Night in Mississippi,” a forceful documentary to be shown Monday on HBO, disabuses the blind, or the naysaying, of any such delusions.

Produced and directed by Paul Saltzman, the film takes an anthropological look at a high school in Charleston, Miss., where the ratio of African-American students to white students is 70 to 30, but the senior prom has remained segregated since 1970, with each faction holding its own dance. (This type of institutional exclusion is the exception rather than the rule in the South, but neither does the school depicted represent an isolated phenomenon in the region; a school’s segregated proms in Georgia was chronicled this year in The New York Times Magazine.) In 1997 the actor Morgan Freeman, a Mississippi native, offered to subsidize the Charleston prom if it was integrated, but he was turned down. In 2008 he approached the school again. This time his offer was accepted.

The film chronicles the weeks leading up to the event, both the excitement expressed by the more open-minded members of the student body and the antipathies conveyed by parents, the divide in attitude being largely generational. Black and white students date each other at the school, but the implication is that certain white parents fear this practice as the sane might fear nuclear terrorism. One young white woman named Jessica, who cares for her younger sister and does yard work and other odd jobs to support the family, tells of a threat leveled by her stepfather: he said he’d beat her if he ever caught her with a black friend.

“A lot of the older people I knew, they’re pretty racist,” a white student named Andy says. “They wouldn’t like be the kind who would go hang anybody, or anything. They just talk about it a lot. They talk about black people.”

Just saw the movie the night before last. Agreed - we all live in Charleston. Wish there was a "how are they doing now" website somewhere and an update on whether that high school has been holding segregated or unsegregated proms since.

prom night in mississippi essay

Wow. I tried googling to find something -- anything -- in the way of an update and you're right, Anonymous. It ain't out there. Disappointing. Any Faithful Readers have a clue about whether or not Charleston, Mississippi, continued to integrate their high school proms after the one in 2008?

well, it appears they are still holding a separate whites only prom-see link (but since it looks like there's only 10 couples, hopefully there is still another and it is integrated): http://krystalharbinphotography.zenfolio.com/p815311721/h94647f4#h94647f4

One can only wonder, Anonymous 12:42, how these folks will do in the real world. There is one and it don't look like that photo, does it?

As a 24yr old NW native/resident, I just simply do not and will NEVER understand the arrogance & overall frame of thinking of the White's in the South...passing racist values down to your children is child abuse. SHAME.

Sadly I am white and from the South and I completely agree with you.

prom night in mississippi essay

I spent my young life (from age 6 - 20) moving all around the US. In my young years we landed in Mobile, Alabama, twice. The longest 'stay' was my HS years. I met my high school sweetheart when I was a freshman, and we were a strong couple all though HS. I'm white, and he was black. This was in the mid 1980's. I don't say "race" because we are all one race ... human. I say "biggot." There were just as many white biggots as there were black biggots. I faced many adversaries, including my boyfriend's mother, who never allowed me to her home. Never. Although my boyfriend was allowed at my home, it was only when my step-father was not there. He had the same mindset as the stepfather in this documentary. Exactly the same. Sadly, my sweetheart turned out to be a rotten guy ... but that had nothing to do the shade of his skin, just his character. And yes, we NEED an update on this school ... and most of all, these students! They are adults now ... 24-26 years of age. We need updates on their lives!

prom night in mississippi essay

For the last three years my new york area based 9 th grade students have contacted the school and spoke to the asst. principal and guidance counselor but never found out exactly what the prom situation is now. They always ended the calls by saying they would call back with info but never did.

Shannon: thanks for adding your personal story to this post. And Brandy: all I can say is, "Why am I not surprised?"

Well I looked into it and sadly, as of 2013, their proms are still segregated ! That is truly horrifying ! :(

Key Tips to Help You Write Great Prom Instagram Captions

Writing a captivating prom caption can make your Instagram post unforgettable. Here are some tips to help you craft the perfect one.

Keep It Short and Sweet

Short captions often have a bigger impact. They are easy to read and get your message across quickly. A single catchy phrase can be more memorable than a long paragraph.

Match the Caption to the Photo

Make sure your caption fits the vibe of your photo. If your picture is silly, a funny caption works best. If it’s a romantic shot, go for something sweet.

Use Lyrics or Quotes

Song lyrics and famous quotes can add a unique touch to your caption. Pick something that resonates with you or matches the mood of the night. Make sure it’s something your friends will recognize.

Emojis can make your caption fun and colorful. They can also help convey your emotions without needing extra words. Just don’t overdo it—one or two are enough.

Be Yourself

Your caption should reflect your personality. If you’re naturally funny, go for a humorous caption. If you’re more serious, a heartfelt message might be better.

Include a Prom Hashtag

Adding a hashtag can make your post more searchable. You can use popular ones like #PromNight or create your own. It helps your friends find and share your post easily.

Ask a Question

Engage your followers by asking a question in your caption. It encourages them to leave comments and start a conversation. It can be as simple as “What’s your favorite prom memory?”

Avoid Overthinking

Sometimes, the best captions come naturally. Don’t stress too much about finding the perfect words. Trust your instincts and have fun with it.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right prom caption can make your Instagram photos even more special. From funny to elegant, there’s a perfect one for everyone. Don’t forget to be true to yourself. Make your night unforgettable with the best captions.
