It’s important to keep in mind that your network administrator can still see what you’re doing when you use a URL shortener at school. On school computers and school chromebooks, it’s likely that your teacher can still monitor your activity, too.

Alternatives to a URL Shortener

If your school has blocked access to all URL shorteners, then there are three similar alternatives you can try. These methods also involve accessing a website without ever requesting its full blocked URL:

• Search for an IP Address : Using a URL isn’t the only way to access a website. You can often access it via its IP address, too. Simply find the website’s IP address using an online tool , copy and paste it into your browser’s search bar, and press enter. This method can be effective, but some websites don’t permit direct access via IP address, and others change their IP address so frequently that it’s not a viable option.
• Visit the site’s mobile version : Some websites host the mobile version of their site on a slightly different URL. Facebook’s mobile site, for example, is m.facebook.com. School administrators occasionally forget to include mobile URLs on their blocklists, which means you can freely access the blocked website by navigating to its mobile version.
• Try accessing the HTTP site : Similarly, many websites have an encrypted HTTPS version and an unencrypted HTTP version. It’s therefore possible that only one of the URLs is specified on your school WiFi’s blocklist.

How To Use a URL Shortener To Unblock Websites At School

To unblock websites at school using a URL shortener:

• Go to a URL Shortener website in your browser . We recommend TinyURL or Bitly .
• Input the URL of the blocked website you want to access . Press “Enter”.
• Copy the shortened URL that is generated .
• Paste that URL into your browser .You should be redirected to the website without being blocked.

5. Use Wayback Machine

Another technique for unblocking websites at school is to access a copy of the website , rather than trying to visit the blocked site itself. The best way to do this is to use the Wayback Machine .

The Wayback Machine is a free digital archive containing billions of web page copies. The tool works by taking snapshots of websites and then storing them in its database.

By viewing an archived version of the site, you prevent the school’s content filters from detecting the URL or IP address of the blocked website, thereby granting you free access to the restricted material.

NOTE: Some schools block students from accessing the Wayback Machine website on school WiFi. In these cases, you can try one of the alternatives listed below.

Using the Wayback Machine is a quick and easy way to bypass simple website blocks at school, and it requires no manual installation or configuration.

It works on school Chromebooks and school computers, and is probably the method that’s least likely to cause any issues with your teacher or administrator.

That said, it does have its limitations. The archived version of the website may not always be the most up to date . Additionally, some websites may not be fully functional or interactive when accessed through the Wayback Machine.

For this reason, this method is best for unblocking text-based websites . The tool supports multimedia content (such as video or audio streaming) for some but not every website, which means it’s not the most reliable method if you want to watch videos. It won’t work for games, either.

Alternatives to the Wayback Machine

If your school has blocked the Wayback Machine website, there are two similar alternatives you can try. Like the Wayback Machine, each of these methods involve accessing a copy of the website, rather than visiting the website itself:

• Google Cache : Google stores cached versions of webpages in order to increase loading speeds. By accessing one of these caches, you can view restricted content at school without being blocked. Simply find the blocked website in Google’s search results, click the dropdown button next to the website’s link, and select “Cached”. Unlike the Wayback Machine, this method doesn’t support multimedia content.
• HTML to PDF Converter : An HTML to PDF converter is a free online tool that takes a website URL and converts it into a PDF document. To use one, simply enter your blocked website’s URL into the tool. It will then generate a PDF containing the site’s content for you to view, without having to visit the site yourself. Popular HTML-to-PDF converters include SodaPDF and Sejda .

How To Use The Wayback Machine To Unblock Websites At School

How to unblock Instagram at school using the Wayback Machine.

To unblock websites at school using the Wayback Machine:

• Navigate to web.archive.org in your browser .
• Paste the blocked website’s URL into the site’s search box .
• Hover over the most recent blue circle on the calendar . You can also view older versions of the website if you wish.
• Click the most recent timestamp . This will open the most recent copy of the webpage archived by the Wayback Machine.

What Are the Best Free Proxies for Unblocking Websites at School?

Using a web proxy is the most popular way to unblock websites at school , despite the fact that the vast majority of web proxies are actually unsafe to use .

At the very least, they leave your traffic unencrypted and exposed to hackers. However, some web proxies also spy on your browser activity , sell this information onto advertisers , inject adverts into your browsing session, and sometimes even infect your device with malware .

You should therefore only ever use a trusted web proxy, such as the ones listed below. These will keep you safe online and are usually more reliable at unblocking websites, too.

EXPERT TIP: If these two proxy websites are blocked by your school, we recommend trying one of the other methods listed above, rather than risk using an unsafe web proxy.

If you must use a web proxy, we recommend using one of the best free proxy sites to limit the danger to your online privacy and security.

Hide.me’s proxy browser.

Hide.me’s Proxy Browser is the most private web proxy you can use to unblock school restrictions. That’s because the company is committed to a zero logs policy , which means they claim not to keep any records of your activity when using the proxy.

The web proxy also offers a higher level of security than kProxy. Users are not only given the option to “Encrypt URL” , but can also “Encrypt Page” .

Unfortunately, Hide.me provides no information about what these options actually mean.

While this is nowhere near the level of security offered by a VPN or the Tor browser, it is a step in the right direction. It may also help to prevent more sophisticated school content filters from blocking your connection based on keyword detection.

In terms of performance, Hide.me’s web proxy delivers average connection speeds . It is about as reliable as kProxy at bypassing school restrictions, and offers three different server locations : the Netherlands, Germany, and Finland.

Overall, it’s a useful tool for unblocking websites at school and offers a greater degree of privacy and security than kProxy.

To unblock websites at school with hide.me’s proxy browser:

• Navigate to Hide.me’s Free Private Proxy Browser .
• Type in your desired website URL into the “Enter web address” box . Choose the ‘Proxy location’ that’s closest to your real location.
• Tick ‘Encrypt URL’ and ‘Encrypt Page’ .
• Click Go . The page should appear unrestricted on your screen.

kProxy’s web proxy.

kProxy is a very popular free web proxy. In our tests, it wasn’t able to unblock websites as frequently or reliably as Hide.me, though.

However, when it did unblock websites, the load times were very fast and the proxy injected no adverts into the browsing session.

You can therefore use kProxy to access blocked websites at school, with only a small amount of trial and error.

If you do encounter an error, kProxy offers ten different proxy servers to switch between. All of these are located in the US — which is good news for American students — but may cause speed issues for non-US users.

You should also be aware that kProxy has an encrypted HTTPS version and an unencrypted HTTP version. To stay safe and secure, you should only ever use the encrypted version .

One annoying quirk of kProxy is that it switches to the HTTP version every time you switch servers. You can change back to the HTTPS version by clicking the padlock icon on the left of the search bar.

To use kProxy to unblock websites at school:

• Go to kProxy.com . Make sure the icon on the left is of a locked padlock, too. If it isn’t, click it to change to HTTPS.
• Select “Change Server” and choose any of the 10 Public Servers . After the page reloads, check that the padlock icon is still showing a locked HTTPS.
• Enter the blocked website’s URL in the search box .
• Click “surf!” . The website should load unblocked.

How Are Websites Blocked at School?

Most schools around the world are required to filter their students’ internet access in order to comply with the law.

In the US, for example, the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) forces public schools to block websites that contain obscenity, pornography, and any other images that may be harmful to minors.

How each school chooses to implement its filters is up to them, but there are generally three options:

These services can be integrated into the school’s existing network, installed directly onto student devices, or configured so that all traffic on the school’s WiFi is routed through the software’s network infrastructure.

• Set up network-level restrictions . School administrators may configure website restrictions themselves by creating a local firewall that filters all traffic traveling through the school’s network.

Network-level website blocks can filter by:

• Website URL – The administrator creates a list of URLs which are blocked if detected. This is the most common type of website block in schools.
• IP Address – The administrator creates a list of website IP addresses which are blocked if requested.
• Content Category – Schools can buy third-party databases that sort thousands of websites into categories like “Social Media” or “Gaming”. The administrator can then block entire categories.
• Keyword – More sophisticated filtering techniques allow administrators to block websites according to the actual keywords present on the page.

NOTE: Most school administrators don’t have the time or resources to use sophisticated filtering techniques. In comparison, third-party services are much more likely to use them. GoGuardian, for example, uses AI to block webpages in real-time based on the text and images present on the page.

These filters can be configured to block websites based on URL, IP, Content Category, Keyword, or a combination of several factors.

NOTE: Even if your school Chromebook doesn’t have content filtering software installed on it, Chromebooks can be configured to always route student traffic via school servers . If that’s the case, your school’s network-level restrictions will still apply to you, even when you use your Chromebook at home.

EXPERT TIP: It’s common for schools to use screen monitoring software on school computers and chromebooks. Although it’s not a type of website block, this technology allows teachers to see exactly what you’re doing on your computer. In some cases, they may also have the ability to manually block your connection.

For example, if your school uses a tool like Deledao Classroom , the staff have a “birds-eye” view of every Chromebook connected to the school WiFi. If you’re unblocking websites, they will know.

Can The Network Administrator See If You Unblock Websites?

If you use a web proxy, a URL shortener, or the Wayback Machine to unblock websites then the WiFi network administrator can see from the network logs that you’re visiting those websites.

Likewise, the network administrator can usually tell when you are using a VPN app or a VPN Chrome Extension. That’s because VPN traffic leaves a specific signature in the network logs, usually in the form of VPN protocols, port numbers and encrypted packets.

The only solution to this is to use a VPN with obfuscation .

The only method in this list that hides that fact you’re unblocking websites from the school administrator is switching to mobile data . By no longer connecting to the local network, your school administrator loses the ability to monitor your activity.

You need to register for a free Vudu account to use this service, but it's worth doing so. Once you do, you can use your account to activate digital copies of movies and shows, as well as buy and rent movies from Vudu.

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Hoopla has one barrier to entry, but is still an easy way to legally watch movies online for free. To use Hoopla, you'll need to create an account and link your supported public library card.

Once you do, you can use Hoopla to borrow movies and TV shows, plus audiobooks and ebooks, from your library's collection. The service is available on the web as well as apps for all your devices and TV streaming boxes.

If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Using the Free filter on the left side will help you find movies and TV that come at no cost. Unfortunately, not everything in the free categories is actually free. Clicking on some titles prompts you to sign up for a free trial.

Still, Yidio makes finding free movie streams far easier than checking individual sites manually. You can filter by rating, genre, and more to find something to watch.

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

In addition to watching online, you can enjoy this content on your Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other streaming devices.

Alongside the movies, you'll also find some TV series (including live channels) and originals to enjoy.

How to quickly access movies to share with students.

Movies can add value to classroom instruction by exploring new topics with students. With feature films, you can bring spaces and periods to life for students. You might incorporate movies into your teaching to support vocabulary instruction, too. Through dialogue, narration, and discussion about what appears on screen, students can see vocabulary words come to life through film across content areas. Teachers can share different historical moments, give students a chance to hear foreign language dialogue,  and spark discussion as students compare books to movies citing evidence from the text.

Even if you’re excited about using movies in the classroom, it can be tough to make it happen. There are a few reasons why K-12 teachers might struggle to find an easy way to access films to share with students.

DVD Equipment is Less Available

Are you still using DVDs to share favorite movies with students? Although you might have a pile of DVDs that you’ve used in the past to bring the subject matter to life for students, it can be a challenge to find devices at school to play the DVDs. And of course, if you have a great lesson idea that includes a movie or series of movie clips, you might want to tell your colleagues. 

However, the logistics of sharing physical DVDs with your colleagues can make it hard to collaborate as a department or grade level team. Personal Streaming Services Can Be Unpredictable

If you’ve encountered issues with DVDs, it’s certainly tempting to use personal streaming sites to show movies in the classroom. Although using a personal login for a streaming service might seem like a quick fix, many schools block these sites. Your school or district might also have policies to prevent teachers from using them. 

Personal streaming sites give users access to a wide variety of content – which means inappropriate content is available alongside a film needed for class. The availability of films on these sites can be unpredictable, too. Not only is this inconvenient, but it also prevents an equitable access point for students outside of the classroom. I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies managed directly by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Project Gemini and Empire State ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: Employee of the Month, LOL, Open 24 Hours , and In Time.

Something you can't get with YouTube but that is supported by most of these movie sites is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free films. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

There's a lot to explore here, including original films, but I'll get you started with these titles that are some of the more popular choices: Split, The Turning, Hotel Transylvania 3, and My Mom's New Boyfriend.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, Whoa. Keanu is on Pluto TV , 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Road Trip, School of Rock, Red Eye , and Equilibrium .

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists The Girl Next Door, Cruel Intentions, Scary Movie 4, Movie 43, and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, European Production, Asia's Top Cinema, LGBTQI+, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some movies that were trending recently include Lady Chatterley's Lover , Dark Souls, Raven, Delicious, and The Frame.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Summer Binge-a-Thon , Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another website with free movies. They often change, but some that I've seen recently include End of Summer Laughs, Dinosaurs & Dragons, Leading Men, Retro Action Movies , and Music on the Small Screen.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

There's also an entirely separate section for kid movies at Kanopy . My son's old enough now to watch more mature movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are so many streaming movie site options right now, and it can nickel-and-dime your budget to death. Luckily, there are free movie sites out there that are easy on your wallet and provide an abundance of content without putting you at risk of piracy concerns. We’ve vetted a list of free movie sites to help you find the best options for your streaming needs, at no cost.

The Best Websites To Stream Movies for Free

1. peacock tv.

NBCUniversal’s Peacock TV made a big splash when debuting in 2020. The best part about this streamer is that the first tier of  Peacock TV is free , so you can watch quite a large number of free content without having to pay for a subscription. All you need to do is sign up with your email and you can start watching free movies instantly.

Enjoy hit movies for free, including popular hits like The Proposal , Friday , Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and more. For all of you Law & Order fans out there, Peacock TV’s free tier has got you covered.

2. YouTube 

Many would be surprised to learn that YouTube actually has a decent collection of free movies to stream (with ads). Just log into YouTube and head over to the Movies & Shows  page to get started.

You’ll see a long list of movies that are Free with Ads, or available to rent at a low cost. Enjoy must-see classics like Fat Albert and foreign hits like the Ip Man movies.  

Tubi is a completely-free movie service featuring News and popular old-school action films, comedies, horror movies and so much more. There are also family-friendly movies that you can watch with the kids.

There is no option to upgrade without ads, as the platform is free all around. The ads are what keep this service, with more than  35,000 viewing options, free . You can create an account quickly and start watching on a computer, or you can pair it to your TV with  an activation code . 

There are plenty of movies for free on Vudu if you don’t mind the ads. There are a wide variety of genres that can satisfy everyone in the family, from crime movies and documentaries, to rom-coms and international films.

If you want more content, you have the option to add payment information and rent or buy one of 200,000 or more popular titles, even recent theater releases. Vudu is part of the Fandango family, a brand etched in the brains of movie lovers nationwide, so there is no shortage of films you can access. 

5. Pluto TV 

Pluto TV gives you immediate access to more than 200 live channels after a quick sign-up option. There’s also a free movie database that houses a lengthy list of on-demand movies and TV shows, including reality TV hits and popular movie classics.

Some of the live streaming channels are a little non-traditional but they cater to specific niches, like a channel that streams horror films 24/7 or one that exclusively streams indie films. But you can still enjoy traditional fare like news and regular cable channels.

6. Popcornflix

Popcornflix has many  free movie options and some original programming . The streaming service boasts “no movie is more than two clicks away.” This is a rather unique channel particularly popular with vintage horror movie fans. But the service also includes a healthy selection of films in other genres, like martial arts, medieval, westerns and so much more.

You don’t need to log in to start watching. The channel states it is 100% legal. It’s part of the Crackle family of streaming services, owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. You can go to the account page and “Opt out of Ads personalization” if you’d like.

This streaming channel is also part of the same company that brings you Popcornflix, so you’ll see some familiar movie titles if you’ve already browsed through Popcornflix’s fun database.

You do have to sign up and then you’ll be  directed to the main page  where you can choose videos or movies to watch. There is some overlap in shows available on Popcornflix, but this is much less of a niche channel than Popcornflix. 

Kanopy is a free streaming option that is only available for people with public library cards, which are also usually free and an amazing amenity for the local community. You’ll be impressed with the movies on here, as it includes some recognizable classics and cinema from all over the world.

Find out if your library is a part of the Kanopy program by doing quick search  to find out. The service was created to be an extension of a library card, only instead of checking out books, you’re checking out movies or documentaries. 

9. Viki 

Viki calls itself the “ Heart of Asian Entertainment ” and is the best source for Korean dramas (with still some notable selections from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan). You’ll find endless classics you can binge back-to-back and even dramas that are still airing in Asia. Trust us, there is no shortage of available content to keep you entertained.

One of the fun features of Viki is the Watch Party option, where viewers can stream live movies and shows together while commenting in the live chat. If you find yourself watching a movie alone, join in is viewing party for some additional company.

While there is free content on Viki, there is an option to upgrade to a “Viki Pass”, which will cost up to $10 a month if you want additional content and an ad-free viewing experience.

10. Asiancrush 

Another channel that is dedicated to the growing adoration of Asian films and shows is  Asiancrush . The service has an impressive library of Asian films, including popular award-winning films but also some lesser-known indie flicks.

When you create an account, be sure to select the “Start for Free” account, or else it will prompt you for credit card information. When you’re looking at the list of movies and shows, look for an orange box with a crown in it at the top right of the title. That signals it is a premium movie and not free. 

11. Freevee

Freevee is fueled by retail powerhouse Amazon, so you know it’s legal, legit, and loaded with great movies and shows. Freevee is available  through the app stores , but you’ll need an Amazon login to get in. If you have Fire TV, you already have free access to this channel. If you go to the Freevee website to watch a movie, it will take you to the Amazon page for viewing. Amazon details how to get Freevee on a variety of devices on its website.

12. The Roku Channel

If you have a Roku device, The Roku Channel is already available to you for free. You can upgrade to a paid level of service, but with the plethora of content available, you’ll still have plenty of options with the free version. The  web version of The Roku Channel  is also available to watch live or On Demand content from a desktop or laptop.

A quick sign-up gets you right into the Plex website and access to its “ Free Movies & TV ” content. You’ll have quite a lot to choose from, as it covers a long list of genres , including action films, animated flicks, crime movies and more.

You can also add your own videos, shows, and media of any kind to your own folder on this site. This is where a slippery legal slope comes in. If you upload a DVD from home to this site and share it, that probably is illegal. If you made a home movie and share it, you likely won’t get in legal trouble. Some call this website a harvester of piracy while others say it’s one of the best streaming sites out there. 

Sling offers a variety of free movies and TV shows at no cost. You just  sign up on the website  or app without having to enter any payment information. You can watch live news, popular movies or highly rated shows. There’s an on-demand section as well, among many in the large list of free content .

Are free movies sites legal? 

Some are and some aren’t. It is up to you as the consumer to do your due diligence before subscribing to a service. Most reputable companies will have an “About” section at the bottom of its website where you can investigate the parent company or legality of a company.

Here are some ways to tell if a streaming website is legal:

• Any website that asks you to download something suspicious or enter in your private information to watch a free movie can be a red flag. You also should never have to install a VPN to watch movies.
• Being able to download movies and save them to your computer is another red flag.
• Also, any legit movie website won’t look like it was made in 1998 and have extremely poor picture quality. 
• If you’re being bombarded with pop-up ads, it’s most likely that the streams are illegal.

Do I need an account to watch on free movie websites?

Just about all free streaming websites are going to require an email address, your birthday, gender identification, and a confirmation of that email address.

Will there be ads while I watch movies?

Yes, most free streaming websites will contain ads to help pay for the service. Although the website may be free to users, they still need to pay for the content by making money through ads. 

You can download an Ad Blocker to avoid some of the commercials but they may not completely work to block every single ad . You’ll likely still see fewer ads than if you didn’t have an ad blocker, though. However, if you don’t want to download an ad blocker, putting up with some ads is a small inconvenience for something that’s being provided at no additional cost to you.
