Here are the most popular websites of 2021 - and the winner might surprise you
It's a video platform - but probably not the one you think
Video sharing platform TikTok has been named the world’s most popular website for 2021.
Web giant has Cloudflare published a list of the top 10 websites for 2020 and 2021, based on data aggregated through its Radar service, showing that TikTok.com rose to the number one spot, leapfrogging the likes of Google .com (#2), Facebook.com (#3), Microsoft .com (#4) and Apple .com (#5).
Drilling deeper into the data, Cloudflare discovered that TikTok first hit the number one spot on February 17, 2021, reaching the famed position a few more times during the month. It wasn’t until August 10, 2021, that being #1 was no longer a sporadic thing, but a regular event. On days when TikTok isn’t leading the charge, Google briefly takes over.
YouTube's moment to shine
In a blog post , Cloudflare explained that its conclusions are drawn from “aggregated data from the 1.1.1.1 Public DNS Resolver” and a “range of data” that Cloudflare has about global internet traffic patterns.
YouTube has its day in the sun on February 2, the day when Superbowl commercials made it online, but also the day after the Myanmar coup, where a video of a fitness instructor video became a viral sensation and became immortalized through memes.
Facebook’s mostly been holding on to the #3 spot, except for October 2021, when the whole “we locked ourselves out of the car” fiasco took place. During those days, Facebook only managed to drop to #4, which speaks more about Microsoft and Apple, who have been clinging onto the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Cloudflare’s report also discusses the effects Squid Game had on Netflix’s positioning, the fight among e-commerce giants, and what we can expect from meta-oriented websites in 2022 and beyond.

The World’s Top 25 Websites in 2023
In the vast realm of the internet, a handful of websites have emerged as global giants. Mainstays like YouTube and Facebook capture billions of users and shape our online experiences. But occasionally, new waves of innovation can shake up this list, which is exactly what’s happening now with generative AI .
Using data from web analytics firm SimilarWeb , we delve into the top 25 websites based on their most recent traffic numbers.
Ranking Internet Heavyweights
In 2023, web properties owned by Alphabet and Facebook dominate the top 25 list as they have for many years now. In fact, when Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are combined, they make up three-quarters of the top 25 list’s total traffic.

The 25 websites above combine for a staggering 192 billion monthly visits.
Most of the websites on this list are based in the U.S., but a few such as Baidu (China) and Yandex (Russia), also make the cut. Interestingly, the three adult websites on this list–XVideos, PornHub, and XNXX–are based outside the U.S.
The Allure of Generative AI
A year ago, Bing ranking as one of the world’s top websites wasn’t on many people’s bingo cards . But, Microsoft’s also-ran search engine has benefitted immensely from the generative AI boom taking place—making it a legitimate contender in the search engine category that has been firmly dominated by Google for years.
Of course, the most remarkable story this year is the meteoric rise of OpenAI , the creator of ChatGPT and other AI-powered tools. OpenAI’s web traffic has shot up over the course of the year, rising from about 20 million per month in the fall of last year to 1.8 billion in April 2023.
In fact, OpenAI’s website traffic is growing so fast, that it may soon surpass giants like TikTok and Amazon.
The rise of OpenAI and ChatGPT shows just how quickly a company can rise to prominence if their tech offering is compelling enough. Whether that popularity can be sustained over the long term remains to be seen.

100 Websites You Should Know and Use (updated!)
In the spring of 2007, Julius Wiedemann, editor in charge at Taschen GmbH , gave a legendary TED University talk: an ultra-fast-moving ride through the “100 websites you should know and use.” Six years later, it remains one of the most viewed TED blog posts ever. Time for an update? We think so. Below, the 2013 edition of the 100 websites to put on your radar and in your browser.
To see the original list, click here . While most of these sites are still going strong and remain wonderful resources, we’ve crossed out any that are no longer functioning. And because there are so many amazing resources out there, please add your own ideas in the comments. Happy surfing!

A great resource for finding huge bargains at restaurants, shops, and for goods in your area.
Like Living Social, Groupon offers a selection of local offers. These can often save you a hefty chunk on the original price of a meal, vacation, or tickets to a local show.
TripAdvisor
Even if you've been living somewhere for years, finding something to do on your days off can sometimes be a struggle. In these cases, TripAdvisor can serve as more than a hotel and flights directory. It also has an extensive database of local attractions that'll keep you occupied for some time to come.
A foodie's resource for local restaurant reviews, Zomato is awesome for discovering hidden gems in your neighborhood -- and finding out which expensive restaurants aren't worth your time.
Weather Underground
One of the best weather sites out there, Weather Underground is a great resource, especially if you're the outdoorsy type and need to know whether or not you're going to freeze your jorts off.
With an astonishing number of movies, TV shows, and documentaries available to watch on demand, Netflix is a worthwhile investment. Their catalog of shows just keeps on growing, and their original productions such as Orange is The New Black and Stranger Things are as good as you'll find anywhere else.
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon's video streaming service may not be as elegant as Netflix's, but if you have Amazon Prime, it comes as part of your package. You'll find a ton of great stuff in their catalog including many critically acclaimed original shows. Amazon's deep pockets are also seeing the company signing exclusivity deals with companies like HBO and the BBC, meaning their library of shows is just getting stronger and stronger.
Rotten Tomatoes
Want to know if a movie is good before you watch it? Rotten Tomatoes aggregates reviews, categorizes them as positive or negative, and then averages them. The result is a simple, unbiased appraisal of the odds that you'll like the movie.
Literally one of the oldest websites on the internet (it predates the web browser), IMDb is one of those exhaustive, meticulous collections of movie ratings, facts, and trivia that would take decades to replicate. Like Rotten Tomatoes, it's a go-to place for movie ratings to help you discover your next movie to watch. If you want to dig deeper, we've written before about how these movie rating sites differ .
YouTube Movies
There's more to YouTube than meets the eye. In fact, it probably belongs in nearly every category on this list. One of the best (and less known) features is the ability to rent movies and TV shows. There's also a decent selection of free movies to watch on the site, too. Basically, if it's not on Netflix, it's probably on YouTube.
As a self-respecting movie buff, ScreenRant should be one of the sites you visit religiously. Packed with the latest movie and TV news, this is an insightful, well-edited publication that keeps you in the know for anything Hollywood related.
Short of The Week
Each week, a new, independent, hand-picked short movie is added to Short of The Week for you to watch for free. These can be on any topic under the sun, from love, to killer zombies. Every short manages to incorporate incredible storytelling finesse into 5-20 minute movies. It's a fantastic way to while a few minutes each week.
Many people see Vimeo as little more than YouTube's smaller competitor. But the site has managed to capture a segment of the movie industry that's hard to find anywhere else. Home to a vast number of indie filmmakers, Vimeo is the place to find refreshing, art-house movies to stream on demand. We're talking about the kind of films you'll see played at festivals like Tribeca, Sundance, or SXSW.
Spotify continues to be the leading service on PC or mobile for streaming any music (and plenty of podcasts), whenever you want. The free service is a good introduction, but it's worth picking up Spotify Premium. You don't realize how annoying the ads are until they're gone. Plus, the offline access is a god-send.
TuneIn is a free internet radio service, that allows you to stream over 100,000 real radio stations from around the world, and over 5.5 million podcasts direct from the TuneIn website, or the service's free apps.
Without a doubt, SoundCloud is God's gift to indie music. It's a simple, bare-bones service that allows anyone to upload and download music under a variety of licenses, and embed uploaded tracks across the web. SoundCloud is great, and if you want to hear the next big thing before the labels do, SoundCloud is where to look.
Connect your SongKick account to your Spotify, Facebook, and Last.fm accounts, and you'll be kept up to date about when your favorite artists will be playing nearby (and the price of tickets). This is a simple, yet powerful way to ensure you never miss another live gig.
iTunes Store and Apple Music
iTunes has grown to dominate the music industry, comprising a huge portion of music sales across the planet. If you want to buy music (or movies, or audiobooks), iTunes probably has what you're looking for. It's also heavily intertwined with Apple Music, Apple's direct competitor with Spotify, where for a reasonable monthly fee, you'll have unlimited access to the entire music library, ad-free.
Last.fm eavesdrops in on your listening habits, and uses statistical analysis to predict what you might like. By installing Last.fm's "toggler" onto, say, your Spotify account, the service offers accurate recommendations for other artist's you're likely to enjoy.
Pandora (US users only), is a great tool for finding new music. It's a "free personalized internet radio". Simply add a few of your favorite artists and the station will start playing related music that you've probably never heard before. Pandora is a great tool, and hopefully it'll stay that way for years to come.
Genius is a gigantic community of music lovers. This is where people turn when they want to discuss and deconstruct a song, or a specific lyric. It's where artists come to explain their music to the world. It's certainly worth checking out.
No matter what kind of music you're into, MixCloud has you covered. This is a fresh approach to radio in the 21st Century, where anyone can be the radio host. Simply search for the radio station, DJ Mix, or podcast that's for you, and start listening for free. If you fancy yourself on the other side of the mic, no problem. Just start uploading your own shows!
The Conversation
For in-depth analysis on a huge range of topics, you'll find it hard to beat The Conversation. The site only accepts commentary and editorials from professional academics. What I love about the site though, is that it will often publish several articles on a single subject to offer different perspectives.
Reuters is the world's leading multimedia news agency, and has received multiple Pulitzer Prizes on international reporting. More importantly, however, according to Media Bias Fact Check Reuters is one of the the least biased news sources out there, offering objective reporting, while using very few loaded words.
Reddit is one of the most diverse media sites on the web, with content ranging from the serious to the absurd . It's also a great source of news, both locally and internationally, on whatever topic you like.
Google News
Google News is a news aggregator, pulling in the top stories from around the web. The site also uses Google's secret sauce of machine learning to turn up articles you're likely to enjoy, based on Google's statistical models of you.
Quartz is home to some of the most intelligent and thought-provoking journalism you can find. Its global-centric approach offers stories you're unlikely to find anywhere else. And its understanding of the online world makes Quartz a beautiful site to visit, knowing you'll always come away more informed than when you arrived.
Hacker News
On the surface, Hacker News is a standard tech news aggregator. However, its technologically literate and involved community offers a unique and insightful perspective that's not available from the more broadly-aimed tech news sites.
FiveThirtyEight
538 is the product of statistician Nate Silver, who is known for almost perfectly predicting the outcome of the 2012 political election via some combination of sober statistical modelling and old-fashioned witchcraft. The site provides news blogging from a data-centric perspective, and often offers an interesting and perhaps soberer take compared to traditional twenty-four hour news networks.
Online Privacy
Tor is not technically a site, but rather a "browser [that] contains everything you need to safely browse the Internet." Engaging with the community on platforms like 500px and EyeEm can also help increase visibility. Finally, diversifying your portfolio across multiple websites can increase your chances of sales, as different platforms attract different audiences. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much do photographers earn.
The earning potential for photographers selling images online varies widely based on factors such as the quality of the images, the platform used and the photographer's level of expertise. Generally, photographers can earn anywhere from a few dollars per image to several hundred dollars per sale, depending on the licensing agreement and usage rights. Stock photo websites often pay contributors a percentage of the sale, typically ranging from 15% to 60%.
Top earners in the industry can make substantial incomes, with some professional photographers earning tens of thousands of dollars per year through online sales alone. For instance, exclusive contributors to high-end platforms like Getty Images can command premium rates, while those selling on more accessible sites like Foap or EyeEm may earn less per image but benefit from higher volume sales.
How Do You Become A Photographer?
Becoming a photographer requires combining technical skills, creative vision and the right equipment. While formal photography or visual arts education can be beneficial, it is not mandatory by any means. Many successful photographers are self-taught, learning through online tutorials, workshops and hands-on experience. Essential skills include understanding camera settings, lighting techniques, composition and post-production software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
To become a photographer whose images are bought and sold online, start by building a strong portfolio that showcases your best work. Focus on developing a unique style and capturing high-quality, marketable images that cater to popular niches. It’s crucial to understand the requirements of different online platforms and to ensure your images meet their technical standards. Joining photography communities and staying updated on industry trends can also help you refine your craft and stay competitive. Consistently uploading new content and effectively keywording your images will increase your visibility and sales potential.
How Do You Sell Stock Photos Online?
A stock photo is a professionally shot image that is licensed for specific uses, most commonly in advertising, websites, blogs and other media to visually communicate messages. Stock photos are typically sold through stock photography agencies or websites.
To sell stock photos online, photographers must adhere to certain quality and content standards set by the stock agencies. These requirements usually include high resolution, proper lighting, and a clear subject matter. Additionally, photos must not infringe on any copyrights or trademarks, and model or property releases may be required for identifiable people or locations.
The income potential from selling stock photos can vary greatly. Some photographers make a few cents to several dollars per download, depending on the platform and the type of license sold. While it is challenging to make a full-time income solely from stock photography, many photographers use it as a supplemental income stream, with top contributors earning significant amounts through consistent uploads and high-quality content.

Understanding Open-Source Website Builders
Open-source website builders are web development tools that help you create websites. The software is free, and its code is open for everyone to see and change. This means you can look at how they work, make changes, and share your version with others. Many offer hosted solutions for their platform to handle your domain and hosting all in one place.
These builders are popular because they are flexible and customizable. A community of developers helps to improve them by adding new features and fixing problems. You can find many themes and plugins to make your website look and work how you want.
What to Look for in Open-Source Website Builders
Choosing the right open-source website builder is crucial for creating a robust and scalable web presence. The ideal platform should offer a balance of ease of use, flexibility, and strong community support to ensure your website can grow and adapt over time. Here are key factors to consider when selecting an open-source website builder:
- Dedicated Support: Look for open-source software with a dedicated community following and developers who regularly update it. This ensures the platform will be safe to use in the future.
- Ease of use: Look for an intuitive interface with drag-and-drop functionality that simplifies the design process. Comprehensive documentation and tutorials are also essential to help users get started quickly.
- Templates: Templates serve as pre-designed blueprints for web pages. They are essential for responsive layouts, adapting seamlessly to different screen sizes. Responsive templates ensure your website looks good on both desktop and mobile devices. They adjust layouts, fonts, and images to fit screen sizes.
- Plugins: They can provide features like contact forms, online store tools, SEO controls, and enhanced security. However, choose plugins carefully to avoid conflicts and potential malware. Use industry-recommended plugins to ensure safety and reliability.
- Upload of images: A good website builder makes it easy to upload images in formats like PNG, GIF, JPEG, and SVG. It should also allow you to effortlessly replace default layout images and backgrounds.
- Themes and colors: Themes form the foundation of your website’s design. They offer variations in numerous built-in options, such as layouts, colors, and columns. Select a theme that matches your website’s specifications. Poorly coded themes can slow your site and negatively impact SEO and responsiveness.
