The recent release of  Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023  is the largest ranking of its kind, covering 1,799 universities across 104 countries. Every year, organizations, universities, and students from all over the world wait nervously for the results of these rankings. They help international students review, compare, and select the best university for them in the country of their choice.

Although the top 25 to 50, or even top 100, are considered the best, any university found in these extensive rankings has something to offer anyone wanting to secure a good education and a successful career.

What is the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023?

It’s a yearly report by the Times Higher Education Magazine . They are also known as the THE Rankings 2023. THE publishes the rankings of nearly 1800 universities across over 100 countries worldwide.

Are the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 reliable?

Can you trust these rankings? Absolutely. Their methodology is robust, transparent and reliable. Universities around the world rely on THE Rankings and are quick to share their THE Rankings in their websites and social media platforms.

What are the THE Rankings based on?

The  methodology  behind the Rankings is data-driven, thorough and validated. Each institution is evaluated using 13 performance indicators which are grouped into these five main areas:

  • Teaching 30 per cent (reputation, number of students to staff ratio, doctorate to bachelor’s ratio)
  • Research 30 per cent (reputation, research income, research productivity)
  • Citations 30 per cent (research influence)
  • International outlook 7.5 per cent (proportion of international students, proportion of international staff, international collaboration)
  • Industry Income 2.5 per cent (knowledge transfer)

To be included in the THE Rankings, institutions must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Publish more than 1,000 publications over the past five years and more than 150 relevant publications in one year.
  • Teach at the undergraduate level.
  • Not be focused only on one subject area.
  • Give overall numbers for the year.
  • Not have more than two of the critical values (see above) as null/zero.
  • Mark at least one subject as applicable.
  • Not be in the custom exclusions list.

What information does the THE Rankings 2023 give?

You can use filters to refine your search in the THE Rankings. You can view universities ranking by:

What are the top universities in the world?

What’s it like to study at mit , what’s changed in this year’s ranking .

The QS World University Rankings 2023 has been released, featuring over 1,400 universities from around the world. Our biggest ever university rankings, this year’s table covers 100 study destinations with the US, UK and mainland China the most-represented.

If you’re at the start of your university research, a global ranking like ours can be an easy way to begin building a shortlist of institutions. It’s also worth cross-referring this ranking with our QS World University Rankings by Subject , which will provide more detail on how each university scores for its teaching in particular subjects and subject areas.

For the 11th year in a row, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains the world’s number one university by our metrics. The University of Cambridge has climbed above the University of Oxford to now be the top university in the UK, while Stanford University and Harvard University have retained their position from last year.

While there are no new entrants in this year’s top 10, Cornell University has climbed back into the world’s top 20, having fallen out last year. Peking University continues to climb the rankings having risen from 38th five years ago to now be ranked 12th.

MIT is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a university town of under 150,000 inhabitants. This town is also home to Harvard University – making it one of the world’s most prestigious hubs of academic tuition and research.

Cambridge is close to Boston, one of the most culturally vibrant and historic cities in the Northeast US. International students account for around 29 percent of enrolments at MIT.

MIT offers some of the most generous financial aid packages among US universities – with around 38 percent of its undergraduates receiving scholarships or grants equal to or greater than the cost of their tuition, with 26 percent of students graduating debt-free.

MIT is also one of a handful of elite US institutions which offer need-blind admission for all undergraduate candidates, including those from outside the US. This means students’ ability to pay is not considered during the application process, and, once a place has been offered, the university pledges to contribute enough to make attendance possible.

Learn more about studying in the US .

This year’s ranking features two new indicators - International Research Network and Employment Outcomes.

These are both unweighted this year, which means they don’t affect the overall score or rank of a university. Instead, they have been included so QS can gather feedback from institutions ahead of fully including them within the ranking in next year’s methodology .

Times Higher Education 2023 World Rankings Released

Time Higher Education (THE) released their 2023 World University Rankings today.   Click here to visit the THE World University Rankings site .   Elsevier is a proud partner of Times Higher Education, supplying the bibliometric dataset based on Scopus data for the 2023 THE World University Rankings.  If you have ever wondered how Scopus data is used in the rankings methodology, keep reading and take time to look at the resources shared below.

THEscreencap.jpg

times higher education world university rankings na 2023

Scopus data is organized in a structured way so you (and Times Higher Education) can use it to uncover insights about global research. A key to that structure is organizing of the data based on the relationships between authors and institutions; this relationship relies on the accuracy of Scopus author and institutional profiles.  Elsevier provides THE with a bibliometric dataset based on publications in a five-year window and citations in a six-year window.  Elsevier provides a 5-year Field Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) metric for the Citations (research influence), the number of publications for the research productivity indicator and the proportion of the university’s total relevant publications that have at least one international co-author for the International Collaboration indicator.

The Elsevier Partnership with THE Goes Beyond Scopus

Use of Scopus data allows Elsevier to provide THE with a robust bibliometric dataset they can use with confidence when completing their Rankings methodology. The bibliometrics dataset provided to THE is also available to analyze in SciVal through the Rankings analysis feature of the Overview module. This provides SciVal users access to the actual bibliometrics used in the THE World University Rankings so they can:

  • Analyse, understand and generate insights based on the actual FWCI and Citation Scores used in 30% of the THE WUR, rather than proxies developed in-house
  • Benchmark at the THE subject level for deeper understanding of your university’s position and to inform faculty and department level plans
  • Analyse, benchmark, and produce peer comparison reports across all bibliometric drivers directly in the Benchmarking module
  • Analyse the trends in the bibliometric drivers to enrich your understanding and inform plans accordingly
  • Remove the need for manual curation and the development of proxy indicators

UNAM debuts 2023 Times Higher Education World Universities Rankings

' src=

The University of Namibia (UNAM) continues to break barriers, this time debuting, as the only Namibian university, on the Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings 2023. UNAM first featured on the most authoritative World University Rankings as a reporter institution in 2022. The institution is now ranked among the top 800 universities globally. This comes after the number of African countries in the rankings doubled over the last five years, with 25 African universities making their debut appearances in the 2023 ranking as reported by THE on 12 October 2022.

times higher education world university rankings na 2023

THE PUBLICATION (PDF Format)

According to the same source: now, there are 97 institutions from 17 African countries in the ranking in total, compared to only 9 countries in 2018.

This year has seen the rankings debut of 25 African universities, with Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria as the top three African Science giants with 26, 15, and 12 institutions, respectively, while Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Mauritius all make their first appearance.

UNAM is the only ranked institution from Namibia and is ranked among the 601-800 universities category, as it celebrates its 30 th anniversary. The institution is in ‘good company’, being ranked in this category with universities that have been in existence for much longer, such as the University of Johannesburg, North-West University, University of the Western Cape, Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique) in Southern Africa, as well as University of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and the University of Nairobi (Kenya).

Citation scores of the university’s publications (UNAM – 90.3, Average for Africa – 47.7) were important drivers for this improvement – publishing in higher quality journals that are read and quoted by other academics is clearly paying off. The institutions’ ‘International Outlook’ is also an important contributing factor (UNAM – 64.2, Average for Africa – 43.5) showing that UNAM is indeed “An Engaged University”, and part of the global academic fraternity. This is further evidenced with UNAM Vice Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu, being elected as President of the Pan African University.
