This thesis entitled Figurative Language Analysis in Five John Legend’s Song is intended to fulfill the requirement for achieving the degree of SarjanaSastra (S.S) in English Letters and Language Department, Faculty of Humanities, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang.
The result of the research showed that from 5 songs, there are 42 lyrics containing figurative language. Those 42 lyrics comprise 8 types of figurative languages. They are simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, paradox, hyperbole, understatement and irony.

This research uses the theory by Abrams (1999) to find the types of figurative language, Railton and Watson (2011) to find the types of the music video, and Rohini and Burhans (1994) to reveal how the music video visualizes the lyrics containing figurative language by 5 Seconds of Summer.
Figurative languages are forms of language used by authors or speakers delivering something beyond the literal meaning Tarigan (Azwardi, 2016). In studied the implicit meaning of language or utterances in songs created by composer so that the readers or listeners can feel and realize that aims.
It was found four types of figurative language in the song lyrics, including metaphor, personification, synecdoche, and antithesis, out of the five types of figurative language analyzed in the song.
