Using Newspapers in Historical Research

  • Newspapers can serve as useful primary sources for historical research.
  • They reflect the time period in which they were created, and provide a glimpe into society at the time.
  • Though some local newspapers are available digitally or on microfilm, many others are available only in their own local regions.
  • NC State University Libraries is a member of Center for Research Libraries (CRL) through which we can sometimes borrow hard-to-find newspapers on microfilm.
  • NC State University Libraries has Text and Data Mining agreements with select vendors.

Why Use Newspapers?

Finding a specific newspaper, finding articles if you have a citation, finding articles on a topic, finding article full text.

  • Newspapers in the Library Collection
  • Newspaper Websites

Newspaper articles can provide a useful source of information, serving as a primary source of information about historical and current events. Some of the benefits of using newspaper articles as primary sources include:

  • seeing how people viewed an event when it happened;
  • providing multiple points of view about an issue, including a comparison of the United States and international views;
  • permitting researchers to trace the historical development of subjects over time;
  • examining issues in the context of their time (by seeing how stories about an issue relate to other stories, or by examining the type of coverage provided);
  • giving a snapshot of a time period detailing how people lived, and what they purchased, etc. which is helpful for writers, playwrights, historians, etc.

Because newspapers also contain commentaries or retrospective articles about events, they can also serve as a secondary source. (Modified from Why Use Newspapers? - OhioState University)

To find a specific newspaper, try the following:

1. On the library home page in the search box click the Journals tab. Type the newspaper title.

journals search box

The search will return results for titles starting with the words you typed. If you want to search for the exact tile or are not sure of the the complete title, use the E-Journals Search (link below the box). From the drop-down menu you can select "Title contains all words" if you are not sure in what order the words appear in the title or "Title equals" (the latter would be useful for short titles like "Time" or "Times").

newspapers research history

2. For titles not available online, click "Print Journals" under the search box for journal searches. This will take you to the library catalog. Click on the "Title" tab. Do a catalog TITLE search for the newspaper title. It is useful to limit your search to Periodicals/Serials.

catalog title search filteres to periodicals

Results list may include several entries for different versions of the title and various formats (print, microfilm, and electronic). If you are confused, ask a librarian for help. For your convenience, information about popular newspapers in our collection is provided in this guide.

Library records may include information about current print holdings and microforms, as well as links to online content. Please note that the catalog does NOT have links to ALL newspapers available online, use the e-journals search for this.

recrod screen for a newspaper title

First, determine if the issue of the newspaper is available online.

Method 1 . Search for the article title in quotation marks (and author's name, if the title is common) in the red search box on the home page (under the "Articles" tab).

search box with the Articles tab selected

A successful search will include a link to the article full text.

Summon result screen for a newspaper article

Method 2. Use the E-Journals search to see if the issue you need is available online. This method is more comprehensive, because it will find ALL of library electronic subscriptions. It also helps when a link in Method 1 does not work.

e-journal serch box with a newspaper title entered

In the results list find a database that covers the period when the article of interest was published.

search results for a newspaper title with links to databases

You can click "Look up Article" or go to the database. Most databases will allow you to browse to the volume and issue or search for the article.

If the article is not available online or you need to see the article as it was published with original graphics, do a catalog search for the newspaper title in the library catalog as described above . Important note: search for the newspaper title, NOT the article title.

  • Start with searching Summon . After you enter your search terms and get results, you will be able to refine you search by Content - Newspapers . You may also select a date range for the articles.

Summon search results filtered to newspapers and limited by date

  • Search one of the general newspaper databases . You should also be able to filter your results to newspaper content and specify dates.
  • Many subject guides provide information on newspapers in the discipline.
  • Ask your subject librarian for assistance.

Please note that newspaper databases come in different formats.

Digital archive databases provide scanned reproductions of original newspaper pages (the full-text and any accompanying graphics).

Full-text databases provide the complete text of newspaper articles (but not accompanying graphics).

Index only databases provide citations (references) to newspaper articles. You can use these to identify the publication date and page number details for specific articles.

Therefore you may still need to use digital or traditional microfilms to view the articles you found using an online database.

If you working with newspapers not available online, you may need to use an index, which may be available in print or on a microfilm. Ask for help at the desk or via an online form .

Remember that if we don't have access to an article you can request it through interlibrary loan (ILLiad) .

Journalism - Newspaper Research: Historical Newspapers

  • Current Newspapers
  • Missouri Newspapers
  • Historical Newspapers
  • Researching Newspapers
  • Underground Newspaper Collections

Using this page

This page contains information about historical newspapers in general and specific collections focus on papers outside of Missouri. Some listed collections may contain historical Missouri newspapers as part of a larger scope.  For Missouri-specific historical newspapers, please see the 'Missouri Newspapers' tab.

This page also includes a glossary of historical newspaper terms. For general newspaper terms, please see the 'Home' tab.

Some tips for starting historical newspaper research:

  • Narrow things down! Identify your specific time period, paper, subject, or all of the above.
  • Most digital news databases begin coverage in the 1990s, but they are often not a complete representation of the print newspaper. Freelance articles may have been removed due to the  Tasini Case , therefore the only way to get the entire newspaper is either through microfilm or the digitized version of the whole newspaper .
  • If MU Libraries does not own the digital version or microfilm (miniature scans of newspapers on film viewable on a microfilm reader) of the newspaper you need, try searching  Worldcat  (a database that has information on the holdings of many libraries). If it is available, request it from another library using  interlibrary loan .

Historical Newspaper Glossary

Blanket Sheet: Nickname for very large broadsheet newspapers of the 1830s. They were about twice the size of modern newspapers. Broadsheet: A large format newspaper, but not as large as a blanket sheet. Newspaper page size increased in the 1800s, due to improvements in printing technology. In the 1900s, the broadsheet format was often compared with the tabloid. The earliest newspapers were large, unfolded broadsheets printed on a single side. Sometimes called broadsides.

Types of historical newspapers:

Extra:  An edition of a newspaper--usually a city newspaper--that was published in addition to the regular editions and sold on the street when especially important news broke, such as a fire, the death of an important person, or the arrival of war news.

Mercantile Papers: Newspapers written primarily for city businessmen that worked in finance and trade. They had information about the prices of goods and services, ship arrivals and departures, and political and foreign news. An example is the New York  Journal of Commerce . Also called commercial papers.

Penny Papers: Penny papers sold for one-cent per issue and targeted the general public (the working- and middle-classes) through individual street sales. They tended to emphasize more topical news, scandal, and police reporting. Some of the most important penny papers were the  New York Sun , the  New York Herald , the  New York Tribune , the  Philadelphia Public Ledger , and the  Baltimore Sun .

Political Papers: Newspapers that focused primarily on politics and government.

Volume:  Newspaper issues used to be organized into volumes. Volume and issue numbers are usually printed on the nameplate, and less commonly on the masthead. A volume often covers a one-year period, but this one-year period does not necessarily correspond to a calendar year. For example, a paper that:

  • was started March 1st
  • has been around for four March 1sts by your year of interest
  • published 3 complete newspapers since January 1st of the year of interest
  • published 2 complete newspapers since March 1st of the year of interest

would likely have 4 volumes and 2 issues. The volume and issue numbering can help a researcher understand whether a newspaper run is complete. Note: Historically, it was not uncommon, especially in remote areas, for newspapers to publish less regularly than advertised, so the volume and issue numbering can help identify gaps (i.e., if an issue was simply delayed or if it is not in the collection a researcher is looking through).

Topics in Chronicling America - Sugar Industry

1778: European explorer Captain James Cook recorded in his journal, "We saw...a few trees about the villages; near which...we could observe several plantations of plantains and sugar-canes." With sugarcane, Captain Cook made beer, which his sailors reportedly did not enjoy.

1848: The "Great Mahele" (a land distribution act) allowed foreigners to own land in Hawaiʻi for the first time. As large amounts of land are needed for the mass cultivation of sugar, the "Great Mahele" contributed to the growth of the sugar industry in Hawaiʻi .

June 21, 1850: The Masters and Servants Act was enacted. This new law legalized apprenticeships, indentured service, the contract-labor system, and the large importation of workers from other countries. Under this law, a laborer who has absenteeism issues or leaves a position before the end of the contract could be captured by "coercive force" by employers and face strict punishments. Punishments included working extra hours beyond the amount of time specified in the work contract (usually twice the original contract period) and being sentenced to prison to do hard labor there. Because of this law, workers could not organize labor unions or go on strike.

1852: Workers start immigrating from other countries to work in the plantations, starting with the Chinese. On January 3, 1852; 175 Chinese workers arrived on the ship Thetis . Eventually, other ethnic groups will come to Hawaiʻi to work in the plantations, including the Portuguese, Japanese, Koreans, Filipinos, Spaniards, Russians, and Norwegians. This situation of extreme globalization resulted in the multiculturalism of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi Creole English, commonly referred as "Pidgin," which developed during Hawaiʻi 's plantation days and is now spoken by more than half of the residents in Hawaiʻi .

1875: Hawaiʻi 's Reciprocity Treaty with the United States was signed. This treaty allowed sugar and other products from Hawaiʻi to be sold without a tariff in the United States. In return, the United States received land in the area of Puʻu Loa, later known as the Pearl Harbor naval base. As a result, Hawaiʻi 's sugar industry doubled its output after four years. From 1875 to 1880, in five years, Hawaiʻi went from having 20 sugar plantations to 63.

1900: With the passage of the Hawaiian Organic Act, Hawaiʻi became a territory of the United States, and the sugar industry in Hawaiʻi grew even more. When American laws became effective in Hawaiʻi , contract labor and the importation of contract laborers became illegal. A large number of Japanese workers move to the continental United States, since wages there were at least double the wages in Hawaiʻi . Workers were now able to join labor unions and strike against their employers, and 20 strikes happened in Hawaiʻi that year. As a result of the workers' increased bargaining power, the workers eventually received more fringe benefits, including housing, medical services, and recreation facilities.

Only those daily U.S. newspapers that report to AAM are included. Affiliated publications are not included in the analysis. Weekday circulation only includes those publications reporting a Monday-Friday average. Comparisons are either between the three-month averages for the period ending Dec. 31 of the given year and the same period of the previous year (2015-2019), the six-month period ending Sept. 30 and the three-month period ending Sept. 30 of the previous year (2020), or the six-month period ending Sept. 30 of the given year and the same period of the previous year (2021-2022).

PEW RESEARCH CENTER

(Note that the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM), the source of this circulation data and the group that audits the circulation figures of many of the largest North American newspapers and other publications, changed their reporting period in 2020 from a three-month period to a six-month period. Additional details about how the circulation estimate is calculated can be found in the  methodological note  below.)

Within this total circulation figure, weekday print circulation decreased 13% and Sunday print circulation decreased 16% from the previous year.

Digital circulation is more difficult to gauge. Using only the AAM data, digital circulation in 2022 is projected to have remained relatively stable. But three of the highest-circulation daily papers in the U.S. – The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post – have in recent years not fully reported their digital circulation to AAM. The Times and the Journal provide data on digital subscriptions in publicly available reports, but since this is not the same as circulation and may not be counted under the same rules used by AAM, these independently produced figures cannot easily be merged with the AAM data. If these independently produced figures were included with the AAM data in both 2021 and 2022, weekday digital circulation would have risen sharply, by 22%.

The addition of these figures also changes the overall picture for combined print and digital circulation. Before 2020, including these subscription numbers with the AAM circulation data would not have changed the overall circulation picture, as total circulation would still decline. From 2020 onward, however, including the Times’ and the Journal’s digital subscribers reverses the trend. In 2022, total weekday circulation would rise by 12% – not fall by 8%, as is the case when looking strictly at the AAM data. For comparison, the chart above shows estimated total weekday circulation using just the AAM data and when the digital subscriber numbers from the Times and Journal are included over the past seven years. For more details on how this affects our estimates and conclusions, read  this post from 2020 on our Decoded blog.

Gauging digital audience for the entire newspaper industry is difficult since many daily newspapers do not receive enough traffic to their websites to be measured by Comscore, the data source relied on here. Thus, the figures offered above reflect the top 50 U.S. daily newspapers based on circulation. In the fourth quarter of 2022, there were an average 8.8 million monthly unique visitors (across all devices) for these top 50 newspapers. This is down 20% from 2021, which itself was a 20% decrease from 2020.

(The list of top 50 papers is based on Sunday circulation but includes The Wall Street Journal, which does not report Sunday circulation to AAM. It also includes The Washington Post and The New York Times, which make the top 50 even though they do not fully report their digital circulation to AAM. For more details and the full list of newspapers, read our  methodology .)

Source: News Media Alliance, formerly Newspaper Association of America (through 2012); Pew Research Center analysis of year-end SEC filings of publicly traded newspaper companies (2013-2022).

In the chart above, data through 2012 comes from the trade group formerly known as the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), now known as the News Media Alliance (NMA). Data from 2013 onward is based on the Center’s analysis of financial statements from publicly traded U.S. newspaper companies, which in 2022 numbered four and accounted for about 300 U.S. daily newspapers, from large national papers to midsize metro dailies and local papers.

From 2013 onward, the year-over-year percentage change in advertising and circulation revenue for these companies is calculated and then applied to the previous year’s revenue totals as reported by the NMA/NAA. In testing this method, changes from 2006 through 2012 generally matched those as reported by the NMA/NAA; for more details, read our  2016 report .

Source: Pew Research Center analysis of year-end SEC filings for publicly traded newspaper companies that break out digital advertising revenue for each year.

Digital advertising accounted for 48% of newspaper advertising revenue in 2022, based on this analysis of publicly traded newspaper companies. This follows a steady increase from 17% in 2011, the first year it was possible to perform this analysis.

In this fact sheet, circulation data through 2014 is from Editor & Publisher, which was published on the website of the News Media Alliance (NMA), known at the time as the Newspaper Association of America (NAA). The NMA no longer supplies this data, so the Center determined the year-over-year change in total circulation for those daily U.S. newspapers that report to the Alliance for Audited Media and meet certain criteria. This percentage change was then applied to the total circulation from the prior year – thus the use of the term “estimated total circulation.” This technique is also used to create the revenue estimates, using the financial statements of publicly traded newspaper companies as the data source.

HIS 243: Latinx Histories: Course Guide

Course guide.

This guide is intended to help you use information resources to complete your midterm essay assignment in HIS 243: Latinx Histories. Scroll down to view the assignment instructions, recommended resources, and searching tips and tricks. You can always contact me for additional assistance. Good luck with your project!

The Assignment

Write a three to five page essay analyzing two sources from the braceroarchive.org, Apoyo KY, or a newspaper database listed on the Latinx Histories course guide.

  • I urge you to share your thoughts, and to receive feedback, in advance via email or during office hours.
  • Choose a topic that interests you. You can explore any theme, place, or time period related to Latinx History.
  • Develop an argument or observation.
  • This paper must (obviously) be entirely your own -- no borrowing from others' research or writing, and be careful of plagiarism.
  • Write strong prose. Make sure that your introductory paragraph(s) and concluding paragraph(s) do justice to your work.
  • Use at least two primary sources.  You're welcome to use more.
  • I encourage you to use sources from just ONE online database, although you are welcome to use more than one (for example, both a newspaper site and braceroarchive.org) if you wish.
  • Use Chicago style footnotes or endnotes. (Chicago is most common in fields like History, American Studies, and Ethnic Studies.) You should consult online resources at the Writing Center for help with formatting.
  • Consider using this research assignment to begin developing your final project for the class. You might, for example, develop a small 3-5 page project on a topic that could be related to your exhibition project due in December.
  • Upload your final paper by the due date:  11:59pm on October 15 th .

Questions you might consider:

  • What kind of source is it? Where/when was it produced? Who is its intended audience?
  • What are the historical and social contexts for the source?
  • How does the author represent his/her/their relationship to time and place, or historical events?
  • How would you describe the “voice” of these source? What motivates this work? Is there an argument here? What conflict or issue underlies this work?
  • What is significant about this text or this author?

The Resources

Oral history resources.

  • Bracero History Archive The Bracero History Archive collects and makes available the oral histories and artifacts pertaining to the Bracero program, a guest worker initiative that spanned the years 1942-1964. Millions of Mexican agricultural workers crossed the border under the program to work in more than half of the states in America.
  • Apoyo KY: Supporting Hispanic/Latinx Communities in Kentucky Oral History Project Long-form interviews with individuals who support Hispanic communities in Kentucky.

Searching Tips & Tricks

When searching in databases, use keywords that best represent your topic and separate those terms with the word OR in the search box. Use different search boxes for distinct concepts. See below for an example of a properly formatted database search.

newspapers research history

Be sure to put quotation marks around any search term with more than one word (e.g. "United States"). You can also insert an asterisk in a search term to see all variations of the word in the results list (e.g. latin* = Latin Americans, latinos, latinx, latinity, etc.).

Use the limiters on the left-hand side of the search results screen to narrow your results. Usually, limiting by date and source type are good places to start. See image below.

Citing Your Sources

Cite your sources using the Chicago Manual of Style. Use the resources below to properly format your citations. Also, be aware that you can often copy citations when searching in databases (see image below) by clicking the quotations mark icon. While this is a quick and convenient trick, you will need to double-check the accuracy of the format because there will often be errors.

  • Chicago Manual of Style (online) The official guide to Chicago citation format.
  • Chicago Manual of Style (Purdue OWL) A helpful citation resource with lots of examples of different sources types.

The event is being expanded to include a keynote lecture on the 6th December (speaker TBC) and this announcement is also a call for paper proposals for scholars as all career stages, and for those who wish to attend the event in York and speak in person, and those who want to present online.

There is are no thematic, geographical, chronological or methodological restrictions, and we invite proposals for 20-minute presentations based on your current research on any aspect of Islamic art history. The deadline for submissions is the 20th October 2024.
