The Centre for Research in Integrated Care (CRIC) is a living laboratory that develops and evaluates patient-centred integrated models of care for individuals with complex care needs and their families.

Patients with complex care needs require additional and various health care services compared to the average population. They also require a high degree of coordinated care.

Evidence shows that these individuals and their families have better outcomes when they have access to community-based health services and can receive co-ordinated care from health care providers and other relevant support systems.

Official public media release can be found here .

COVID-19 presents a clear and ongoing threat to the global community: how to manage this pandemic, and the ones that will surely follow it is an enormous challenge with no clear solution. New Brunswick’s researchers wanted to step up to find answers to this challenge and the unprecedented and interconnected health, economic and social issues this virus has created. We knew that NBIF could empower those researchers in tackling this challenge by providing; financial support, resources, and connections, and so, we mobilized our team in early March to start looking at what we could do.

In two short weeks working with our colleagues at the  New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF) , we developed and launched our COVID-19 Research Fund. This fund enables researchers to explore new ways to detect and treat COVID-19, assess its effects on people, communities, and the economy. It’s critical work; the innovations around new treatments, models, and societal issues is our best way out of this crisis.

The response from New Brunswick’s research community was heartening. Rather than shrink from the massive, global challenges created by this novel coronavirus, they rose to the opportunity in droves. Applications poured in, 60 to be exact, requesting $2.3 million in funding. It quickly became apparent that the original amount we had budgeted for this new program would not be enough to fund the many worthy research projects.

We reached out to the  Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to seek additional funding, and they responded. Thanks to ACOA, we were able to provide funding to more qualified research projects. In total, 27 separate projects across universities in the province, NBCC and Horizon Health, have been approved for funding for a total of $846,707. For the full list of projects funded click here .

The variety of research projects submitted and approved speaks to the depth of research that takes place here in our provinces, universities, colleges, and research institutions. We have researchers directly tackling how to diagnose COVID-19 infections, mitigate the spread of the virus, explore public health communication practices, educational reforms, community resiliency, heart health outcomes, alcohol consumption, and the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 on New Brunswickers.

Bear in mind, most of these researchers are not epidemiologists. They are facing the same struggles as other Canadians, with shuttered offices and labs, financial burdens, and fears for their family’s health. Yet they still stepped up to shoulder an additional burden willingly and do their part to fight this pandemic. That’s inspiring.

For a small province, we are punching well above our weight when it comes to assessing the health, social, educational, and economic consequences of this historic pandemic. It makes me proud as a New Brunswicker, and as an active supporter of New Brunswick’s research community. With COVID-19, the world has changed, perhaps forever. We need fresh thinking, and New Brunswick’s researchers are leading the way. With the breadth of innovative research projects that are now underway in our province, I feel confident that New Brunswick will be stepping out of this pandemic with a strong understanding of how it affected our lives and a plan for what we can do better in the future.

I am also proud of our team and NBHRF for the speed in which we brought this new fund to life, and the collaboration it required. We all recognized the urgency of providing funding to empower New Brunswick’s researchers to address the multitude of issues COVID-19 has raised. I can’t recall any other fund being created and launched in such a short time.

And then APPTA , a partnership between AGE-WELL NCE, Canada’s aging and technology network, and the NBHRF, came aboard with a commitment to spread awareness of this research to crucial audiences across Canada and to help researchers positively influence the public policy environment.

COVID-19 has brought wrenching heartache to individuals and families who died or were sickened by the virus, social and economic consequences, and the virtual lockdown of many economies. It’s been hard on all of us.

But New Brunswick’s researchers have rallied to the challenge. That’s something we can all be proud of.

Sincerely, Dr. Laura Richard, Director of Research

Innovative partnership will deliver expedited access to cancer treatment for New Brunswick patients

Horizon Health Network and Amgen Canada agree to work on establishing a new pathway that will see therapy made available to patients much faster than through conventional processes.

new brunswick health research foundation

(BOSTON, Mass.) – Horizon Health Network (Horizon), in collaboration with Amgen Canada – one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies – is partnering to bring innovative medicine to patients faster.

We are embarking on a new innovative access pathway that will see clinically validated cancer treatment being made available to patients much more quickly than under conventional processes.

This innovative access pathway framework will work towards enabling cancer treatment to be made available to Horizon Health Network patients in New Brunswick and their clinical teams, providing patients an alternative treatment while easing the burden on health resources in a hospital setting.

“The traditional pathway for bringing innovative medical solutions to market in Canada is very linear and can often take two to three years from start to finish, which can have a very real and significant impact on patient outcomes,” said Margaret Melanson, Horizon Interim President and CEO. “This is providing an express lane for patients to have access to new treatments, ultimately providing better care and a better patient experience.”

With an average of 732 days, Canada currently ranks 19 th out of 20 OECD countries in the average the number of days it takes for patients on public plans to access new medicines.

The innovative and early access solution being introduced at Horizon Health Network respects and is complementary to the existing process for introducing new medical solutions to market.

The agreement between Horizon Health Network and Amgen Canada will provide the Regional Health Authority with direct access to therapy, running parallel to the existing process, while dramatically reducing the amount of time the patient needs to wait for access to innovative treatment.

“With a mission to serve patients, Amgen seeks out new and innovative ways to ensure Canadians can access their medicines as quickly as possible,” said John Snowden, Executive Director of Amgen Canada. “We believe in addressing the needs of every patient every time and applaud the original thinking and speed of the healthcare thought leaders and decision makers at Horizon Health Network in New Brunswick who navigated a complex system to put patients first.”

The project will identify the first group of patients to be eligible for this expedited access to innovative drug therapy initiative in the first year, with potential to grow in the future.

We would like to recognize the critical role of our partners at ResearchNB for identifying exciting opportunities such as this and for serving as a connector between industry and health care organizations like Horizon Health Network to help drive innovative solutions forward.

Horizon Health Network promotes a culture where research and innovation can flourish. Horizon Research Services carries out approximately 250 clinical trials for various treatments and solutions annually, in addition to roughly 300 investigator-led studies.

Horizon Health Network and Amgen Canada will be closely monitoring the results of this innovative access agreement, with the potential to apply this pathway to other treatments and therapies in the future.

“New Brunswick has a thriving health research ecosystem and ResearchNB is pleased to have played a part in the development of this win-win collaboration,” said ResearchNB chief executive officer, Damon Goodwin. “Our province is a microcosm of Canada and research projects tested here can be scaled to the rest of Canada.”

CABHI and the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation Announce $1.8M Funding Program

Innovation word cloud

Today the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI) and New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF) signed a new partnership agreement designed to bolster the development, testing, and adoption of healthcare innovations in seniors’ care in New Brunswick (NB).

There is an urgency to develop innovative new technologies that will support brain health due to the fact that a growing proportion of the global population is living longer than at any other time in history. As this population ages, the need to maintain brain health and/or manage declining cognitive function will have a far-reaching impact both socially and economically.

Given the growth of the older adult population around the world, it is critical to accelerate solutions in the aging and brain health sector. These solutions will allow the seniors population to age more gracefully and in the setting of their choice, as opposed to long-term care facilities, hospitals, or nursing homes.

To address the need for new solutions, the partnership between CABHI and NBHRF calls for a combined investment of up to $1.8M CAD over the next three years to support the priorities identified by the New Brunswick Council on Aging, including the development of a joint funding program offering support to selected NB-based researchers and clinician applicants for projects that show promise in driving innovation in senior’s care and promoting economic development in NB.

The new funding program is called the Senior’s Care Strategic Innovation Fund and will offer up to $200,000 CAD in matching funding per project to accelerate the translation of research into products, services, and practices that address the needs and challenges of the aging population.

“CABHI is pleased to partner with the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation to help inspire a culture of innovation in the field of aging and brain health,” said Ron Riesenbach, Vice-President and Chief Technical Officer at CABHI and Baycrest Health Sciences.  “This partnership is a prime example of how organizations can work together across provinces to invest in improving the quality of life and care for older adults in Canada.”

Thanks to renewed funding, the University of New Brunswick’s (UNB) Centre for Research in Integrated Care (CRIC) will continue to be the New Brunswick node of the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN). The Canadian Institutes of Health Research has provided $10 million in funding over the next five years to the CPRCN. Partner organizations across Canada, including the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, matched the funding for a total of over $20 million in support. “This funding will enable us to continue our research in primary and integrated care innovation in New Brunswick, across Canada and internationally,” said Dr. Shelley Doucet, director of CRIC, professor of nursing and Jarislowsky Chair in Interprofessional Patient-Centred Care. “In addition, it will support the creation of practice-based research networks within New Brunswick, which will facilitate the spread and scale of research in New Brunswick and across Canada.” The SPOR CPCRN is an established pan-Canadian network of people who collaborate across disciplines and sectors to create innovations in primary health-care delivery. With this renewed funding, CPRCN will expand patient-oriented primary care innovations to new sites, settings and populations. The PRCN seeks to create a sustainable pan-Canadian health-care learning platform supported by patient-oriented, practice-based research to improve patient and provider experiences in delivering and receiving care and supporting a more sustainable health-care system. One such project, the OECD Patient Reported Indicators Survey, involves 18 countries and 10 Canadian provinces. It aims to collect data from primary care providers and patients on key health outcomes and experiences for people with chronic conditions. The research results will highlight how these vary across communities and enable decision-makers to learn from this range of approaches to improve primary care services for people living with chronic conditions. “We are grateful to our funders, particularly CIHR and NBHRF, for their continued support, and we look forward to working to achieve the Network’s new vision, mission and new objectives over the next five years,” added Doucet.

The Government of Canada and Maritime provinces put patients first with new investment

From: Canadian Institutes of Health Research

News release

Patients and their families are best placed to know what is important and what is not when receiving health care services. That’s why patient-oriented research and care is so vital: through their lived experience, patients bring valuable firsthand perspectives to research that, in turn, help lead to new and better ways of delivering care that ultimately improve the health of all people in Canada.

Support from federal and provincial governments will ensure health research focuses on priorities identified by patients

March 17, 2022 – Fredericton, New Brunswick – Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Today, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Health, announced an investment of $16.1M in funding and in-kind contributions from the Government of Canada and the provincial governments of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island to support the work of a Maritime hub for patient-oriented research. Known as the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit, it has played an important role building regional capacity in patient-oriented research since 2013.

The pandemic has been a busy time for the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit, which has contributed to 56 projects related to COVID-19. For example, it supported a study to better understand how the needs of patients and primary care providers are being met, and what lessons COVID has taught us about improving the way people access primary care. With the assistance of patients, the SUPPORT Unit also produced reports on how the pandemic has affected the mental health of people in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The research results are informing how the provincial governments allocate resources to help people at risk for mental health and substance use challenges made worse by the pandemic.

This new investment will help the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit continue this important work and bring it to the next level, ensuring patients have a greater say in setting research priorities, that they are involved in more aspects of the research process, and that the knowledge from research is applied to improve health care and patient outcomes.

This investment is provided as part of SPOR, a pan-Canadian initiative dedicated to integrating the voices of patients in research and health care. SPOR is led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) with support from partners across the country.

“In order to provide Canadians with high-quality health care, we need research evidence to tell us what works. Patients, caregivers, and families help get at this evidence by adding their lived experience to the research process. When patients, researchers, and health care professionals combine their expertise and experience, that’s when we’re truly able to make a difference in patients’ lives.” The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos Minister of Health, Government of Canada
“This initiative integrates patient voices in research and health care and is a vital step forward for patient-centric care in our province. For every dollar our government invests in research, we get a five-dollar return in economic spinoff and jobs. This kind of investment in the knowledge economy attracts world-class clinicians to our province and supports a learning heath system where evidence is used to inform the care we provide.” The Honourable Dorothy Shephard Minister of Health of New Brunswick
“Patient-oriented research puts people at the centre of care and ensures that health policies and system changes are reflective of the needs of patients, families and caregivers. This funding, along with investments made by each of the Maritime provinces, will allow us to continue with these important provincial and regional research initiatives.” The Honourable Michelle Thompson Minister of Health and Wellness of Nova Scotia
“Delivering health care requires understanding the capacity of our system and the needs of patients. By bringing together researchers and policy workers, this collaboration helps us make evidence-based decisions about the best and most relevant care for Islanders.” The Honourable Ernie Hudson Minister of Health and Wellness of Prince Edward Island
“ I’m so proud of the impactful work the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit is doing here in New Brunswick and across all the Maritime provinces. During the COVID-19 pandemic, you stepped up to provide the important research evidence medical professionals and policy makers needed to make decisions to help keep people safe and healthy. This investment is a vote of confidence in the important role you continue to occupy in the health system.”  Jenica Atwin Member of Parliament for Fredericton
“As patients and caregivers, we have first-hand knowledge of living with our conditions, receiving treatment and navigating health care systems. We can draw on that lived experience to guide and inform research, identify what matters most to patients, and ultimately improve health care for others. This funding will allow us continue this important work in partnership with researchers, policy-makers and health care professionals, and ensure that Maritime health care systems meet the needs of patients, caregivers and our communities.” Heather Hogan, Co-Chair, Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit Patient Partner Council
“CIHR is pleased to be able to continue growing Canada’s capacity to conduct patient-oriented research, not only because patients’ voices deserve to be heard, but because health policy and practice is improved when patients are involved throughout the research process. Thank you to our provincial partners for making this investment possible.” Dr. Michael J. Strong President, Canadian Institutes of Health Research
“The New Brunswick Health Research Foundation has been involved in the development and funding of the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) since CIHR Launched its Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research in 2011. The positive impact that the MSSU has had on the people and province of New Brunswick could be said to be unparalleled. It has not only contributed significantly to the economy, but patient-oriented research and evidence-based decision-making that reflects the unique needs of Maritime patients and helps to improve the health of our population. The New Brunswick Health Research Foundation is proud to continue to support this worthwhile endeavour.” Meaghan Seagrave CEO, New Brunswick Health Research Foundation

Quick facts

The Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) is an initiative led by CIHR in collaboration with partners across the country.

SPOR Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials (SUPPORT) Units, or SPOR SUPPORT Units, are provincial and territorial-based centres that provide access to health data, apply knowledge generated through research to improve health care practices, provide training on conducting and using patient-oriented research, and engage patients as active partners throughout the entire research process.

Since 2013, the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit has played an important role building regional capacity in patient-oriented research in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

The Government of Canada, through the CIHR, and its provincial partners are providing an additional investment of $16.1M over five years to help the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit continue its important work.

Research grants of two Network clinician researchers renewed

Moncton, May 2, 2022 – The Network is proud to announce the renewal of research grants valued at nearly $700,000 of two of its clinician researchers, namely Dr. Mouna Ben Amor and Dr. Ludivine Witkowski.

“I congratulate Dr. Mouna Ben Amor, geneticist, and Dr. Ludivine Witkowski, neurologist. The renewal of these research grants is excellent news for us and an important step forward in our initiatives to develop the university and research mission of our facilities, which is a strategic priority of the Network,” explained Dr. Brigitte Sonier-Ferguson, Vice-President of University Mission of Vitalité Health Network.

Dr. Ben Amor’s research activities involve understanding the genetic mapping of the population of New Brunswick and determining the risk of being a carrier of common recessive genetic illnesses so as to estimate the prevalence of these illnesses.  Dr. Witkowski’s research program focuses on her two subspecialties, namely multiple sclerosis and demyelinating illnesses of the central nervous system as well as cognition related to early neurodegenerative illnesses.

Dr. Ben Amor and Dr. Witkowski received their first salary grants as clinician researchers from the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF) in 2017. This financial support results from a partnership between the NBHRF and the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau Brunswick that funds research activities.
