Short Essay on Monsoon in 100 Words

The term monsoon is derived from the Arabic word ‘Mausam,’ meaning seasons. Several parts of the world actually experience two major seasons. Those are summer and winter. Alongside with it two short seasons of spring and autumn intermediate the major ones. But none experiences the rainy season as particular a part of the seasonal cycle.

Only India has this speciality, whose climate is the tropical monsoon since, for a greater part of the year, the people enjoy rainfall. Monsoon is the significant one helping in Indian agriculture. It is also the source of water for drought-prone and dry areas. Indian life depends principally on it since its arrival and departure is the reason for the well-being of the people.

Short Essay on Monsoon in 200 Words

Every place on earth is inhabited by certain people, vegetation, culture, which arise out of the typical climate and seasonal diversities that every place experiences. India is a land of diversities, not much for its variety in inhabitants and culture, several states, but also for the uniqueness of its climate.

Indian climate is called the Tropical Monsoon because it is the only country that experiences rainfall in a particular season. It is unavailable in the rest of the world. The term monsoon comes from the Arabic term ‘Mausam’ meaning season. The Indian climate favours the monsoon season as it is the most important force behind its agrarian economy.

Monsoon occurs on two spells in India, where the southern part experiences it twice during summer and winter. Monsoon arrives in India in June and continues till September. It is mainly conducted by the si=outh-west wind to drive the moist air from the Indian ocean and the Bay of Bengal to cause rainfall on its eastern sides.

The deserts remain dry because the moist water ends up by the time it reaches the west. An early or late monsoon is a symbol of flood and drought respectively since it is the vagaries that affect the cultivation. Hence its proper showering is essential for the sustenance of life.

Short Essay on Monsoon in 400 Words

Rain is one of the most significant natural forces on earth, which drives the course of vegetation, human and animal lives, and the cultural context of a certain place. If a place is well fed by rainfall then it will produce greenery and softness in minds of people, whereas regions on earth that hardly receive any water have to toil really hard with the deserts in their background. Thus monsoon is time to nurture nature and ourselves to the best of our ability.

The term monsoon is not an indigenous term. It is derived from the Arabic term ‘Mausam’ meaning season. Monsoon in plain terms means the rainy season and India is the best country to recognize the significance of Monsoon. It is the time when seasonal winds blow from the south towards the north, thus taking up moist winds from the Indian ocean and the Bay of Bengal and resulting in creating rainfall in the eastern part of India.

The winds blow from southwest to northeast. By the time it reaches the Western Ghats, the moist winds get dry and create very little rain. Monsoon determines the position of agriculture in India, where adequate rainfall supports optimum crop cultivation and production. Monsoon defines India according to two slopes. The places receiving rainfall are the perfect region to produce a better lifestyle, than the rain shadow areas that hardly ever receive rain. In fact, the equatorial regions also receive heavy rain throughout the year and are the belt of the deep equatorial forests.

Monsoon is responsible for floods and drought. It happens according to the wet spell and dry spell. If the monsoon arrives prior to its time or departs much late than its usual time, it is the wet spell that creates a flood. On the other hand, if the monsoon is too late to arrive or arrives much before its completion of a cycle, then the dry spell creates drought and scarcity of water. These are the vagaries of monsoon and it creates immense trouble to the countrymen. India’s agrarian economy is highly hampered due to the drought and flood and it becomes very difficult to revive it again.

Monsoon is hence one the most essential seasonal aspect of India, where Cherapunji receives the maximum rainfall in the whole world. While the world is satisfied with summer and winter, India experiences a wonderful and unique cycle of seasons, where monsoon is not just a show of drizzles.

I have written the essays above with a very simplistic approach for a better and easier understanding of all kinds of students. So, hopefully after going through this lesson, all your doubts regarding this context have been resolved. Essay on Rainy Day in English for class 10

The blessings of summer, winter, spring, autumn, and the monsoon—also known as the rainy season—have been bestowed upon us by God. Each season has its own charms and attractions which affect the well-being and propensities of individuals going through or getting a charge out of it. Every season has also got some specific features regarding fruits, vegetables, clothes, etc. Rainy drops of pouring down from the sky are a blessing of God that tears away the blazing heat and brings glee to all faces. It is the blessing of Allah that he bestows upon the people, tired and exhausted with the summer’s heat.

“Rain is grace; rain is the sky condescending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.” (Quotation)

People in Pakistan experience exhaustion as a result of the severe weather during the months of April, May, and June each year. They naturally want a change and this they are granted in the mid of July when the sky often gets heavily overcast and rain clouds are swept across the sky. This is due to the South-westerly winds that blow over the Indian Ocean and bring the monsoon clouds which cause a lot of rain. The gasping and heat-stricken people thank God for this blessing and they feel quite refreshed and energetic after this very change in the usual Weather. South-westerly winds are refreshingly cool and they bring relief to all the heat-stricken creatures.

“Rain showers my spirit and waters my soul.” (Quotation)

Everything that has a benefit also has a disadvantage, the same as with the rain. The rain, which can sustain life and food, can also cause chaos and damage. Rain is not only a source of life, but it is also a cause of chaos and destruction. Accommodations, fields, crops, and shelters can all be destroyed by rain. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and devastating floods are all possible outcomes. Anything that comes its way can be wiped away. Rain can be beneficial as well as detrimental.

“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet.” (Quotation)

It was quite humid as well and both the animals and the human beings were feeling much disturbed and upset due to the alarming heat and high temperature all around. Everyone hoped for a pleasant shift in the weather. Surprisingly, the trees’ swaying tops were beautifully and magnificently ruffled by the wind. Perhaps, nature had decided, after all, to please the heat-affected persons with a cool, refreshing, and soothing change. Due to the fast-blowing South-Westerly wind, the humid heat was gone in no time. Along with this, a rolling mass of black clouds began to appear in the sky, and in a matter of seconds, the sun hid behind this veil of dark clouds. The sky was heavily overcast and there were flashes of lightning, quickly followed by claps of thunder, the roaring clouds created an atmosphere of a horror film. All of a sudden, large raindrops began to fall. The dry earth sucks these if it were thirsty for centuries.

“Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in rain.” (Quotation)

The steady raindrops soon got converted into a heavy shower which lasted for almost an hour, making everything refreshed and bright having been washed thoroughly. The rain was making the seemingly lifeless and inert plants dance. The most radiant shades of green appeared on their leaves. Everyone was thrilled and happy. The sadness and sorrow all vanished. Nobody was bothered by wet clothing or shoes.

“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.” (Quotation)

When the rain stopped, I came into my street which presented the sight of a stream because the drainage system had got locked. There were a lot of children who had been playing in the rain and were still enjoying themselves by floating paper boats in the rainwater. They were laughing, cheering, screaming, and shouting gladly and their happiness knew no bounds. The young and the old all were overjoyed and feeling much relieved and quite grateful to Allah Almighty for his benevolence. There were a number of scenes of jubilation all around.

“One touch of nature maketh the whole world kin.” (Quotation)

Essay on Rainy day in English with Quotations

In addition to the effects of rain on human beings, rain also had a dominating and prevailing impact on non-living things. The rooftops of all the houses, for instance, had got full and the high walls were thoroughly drenched. The tree and plants were presenting a totally new look as their leaves had got washed and were then sparkling in glee. Moreover, low-lying areas were flooded and public transport was having a lot of trouble while passing through them. A number of vehicles had got stuck in the water and their drivers were trying hard to get them started once again. In spite of all the hurdles, everybody was happy inwardly and was taking things in a very relaxed way without any kind of tension. In short, it was a gala day. In a nutshell, Allah’s creatures rejoice and delight during the rainy season or rainy day.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” (Quotation)

The rainy season, a vital component of India’s meteorological pattern, arrives with a refreshing change. Lasting from June to September, it’s marked by widespread showers that quench the land’s thirst after the sweltering heat of summer. The monsoon’s onset is often anticipated with great eagerness, as it brings not only relief but also a sense of renewal to the environment.

As the first raindrops touch the earth, a unique fragrance fills the air, blending the scent of wet soil with the promise of new beginnings. The downpour brings with it a cascade of benefits. Agricultural communities rejoice as the rains enable them to plant crops that will eventually feed the nation. Rivers, lakes, and reservoirs witness a significant rise in water levels, rejuvenating these vital water sources.

However, the monsoon isn’t without its challenges. Excessive rainfall can lead to floods and landslides, causing damage to property and even loss of life. Waterlogging and disrupted transportation systems are common during heavy showers. Diseases such as malaria and dengue thrive in this season due to stagnant water. Thus, while the rainy season brings relief, it also necessitates preparedness and precautions.

The cultural significance of the monsoon cannot be overstated. It’s a time of celebration, as various regions mark the season with festivals. The Teej festival, celebrated predominantly by women, pays tribute to the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, while Raksha Bandhan strengthens the bond between siblings. In conclusion, the rainy season in India is a pivotal time that shapes the nation’s landscape and culture. Its arrival brings relief from the heat, nurtures agriculture, and rejuvenates natural water sources. While it poses challenges, the monsoon’s positive impact far outweighs the inconveniences. The rainy season comes after the summer Season. So this season brings relief to everybody. We enjoy the rains. Very often it rains for days together. The water level rises. Trees look more and more green. On a rainy day the sky remains covered with clouds. The sun remains hidden behind the clouds.

We get many kinds of vegetables in this season. If there is plenty of rain water, then it is preserved in dams for hydroelectricity and irrigation purpose.

The rainy season is also not without troubles. It brings us   some inconveniences. As roads become muddy, people face difficulty in going from one place to another. Diseases like Malaria, Dysentery and Diarrhea are quite common. Impure water is the chief reason for the spread of diseases. A flood occurs and brings heavy damage to crops.

Essay on Rainy Season

India is known for its rainy season. The major portion of our country falls in the tropical region. It means that we enjoy a tropical season where the southwest winds carry down clouds from June till September. Torrential rain occurs in this season in my city. This season behaves differently in different locations in India. Rajasthan gets the least rain whereas Meghalaya receives the highest rain every year. It all depends on the topography of our country.

The Himalayan Ranges stop the moisture-containing winds and transform them into clouds. These clouds then travel down to the northeastern states to shower their blessings. Monsoon winds from the oceans reach different states and shed loads of water as rain on the other states.

We enjoy our rainy season for 3 to 4 months every year. Heavy clouds are formed in the sky when the southwest monsoon winds invade with a lot of moisture from the sea. By losing temperature, these clouds start getting heavier. Once the motion of the clouds slows down due to increased weight, raindrops form, and shower from the sky. The cool breeze and rain make our atmosphere quite enjoyable.

Dark clouds and lightning are the symbols of heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms are also quite common in India. Due to our diverse landforms and huge area, the behaviour of the rainy season is also diverse. We have learned how to harvest rainwater and tackle droughts. Villages and cities are also learning how to harvest it and recycle it for future use and to naturally increase the level of the water table in the earth.

In our villages, farmers start working on the fields before the rainy season hits. Using the natural water supply, the farmers irrigate their lands and grow various crops relevant to this season. Rain fills our ponds, rivers, and streams. It also gets settled down and increases the freshwater reserve underground. This freshwater reserve is then used as a drinking and irrigation source for the rest of the year. A major part of the northern and southern states in India prefers the rainy season for growing different crops and vegetables.

My city turns out quite beautiful and soothing. After the hot gloomy days of summer, the rainy season hits and removes the dusty look of my city. The trees seem very happy when their leaves are washed clean. The environment becomes greener and pleasant. Excessive rainfall also causes water logging. The municipal corporation takes care of the logged water and drains it out using pumps. Due to excessive construction and dumping of natural water reserves, water logging is common these days.

The rainy season is important for our crops. It also keeps the surrounding flora healthy and thus takes care of the fauna living with it. Without it, our planet will turn barren. Life will not survive as we see around us. The onset of the rainy season brings freshness and peace of mind. We all eagerly wait for it during the summer days. A rainy day is always the most exciting day for a child playing outside. You will also find rainbows in the sky quite amazing.

Ways To Stay Safe During The Rainy Season

Monsoon indeed gives relief from the scorching sun and hot and dry climate but it also brings lots of diseases with it. Due to heavy rains, humid climate and strong winds, many infectious diseases are spread among people. Some of the common health problems during the rainy season are swine flu, colds, viral fever and stomach infections.

Underneath are some tips which must be followed by everyone to keep themselves healthy and safe during monsoon season:

Use rain gears: While going out in the rainy season, people must use their rain gear like waterproof boots, hooded raincoats and umbrellas. As children have a weak immune system, they should not step out in the rain without proper rain equipment otherwise they might catch a cold.

A warm shower: People are advised to take a warm shower if they are drenched. This will help their bodies to get stabilized and return to the normal temperature. Also, they should use hot water for bathing as the temperature is very low during the monsoons.

Basic safety: Children or adults who are doing outdoor activities like swimming should go inside the campus if they hear any thunder and even if it has not started raining yet. They should avoid open areas like playgrounds and metal objects like light poles when they hear thunder.

Avoid stagnant water: Stagnant water is a breeding place for mosquitoes that spreads diseases like malaria and dengue. To avoid this situation, people should regularly empty the still water sources like pet water bowls, planters trays and plates and inflatable pools around the homes.

Keep away from floodwaters: Wading in flood water, especially barefoot, is a fun activity for kids. Children should not go in floodwater as they might get infected by a bacterial disease called leptospirosis. Also, they should disinfect their toys that are contaminated by this water before playing with them.

Cleanliness is important: During the rainy season, people catch a common cold. They should always sanitize their hand before doing any work or eating. People should always wash their hands and feet when they come home, especially after getting in contact with floodwater.

Don't eat junk food: As the monsoon brings many diseases with it, therefore, everyone should avert eating junk or oily food. They should eat homemade food as it will help them in boosting their immunity. People can also eat fruits and green vegetables after washing them properly.

Avoid sharing things: Viral fever is a communicable disease. Therefore, people suffering from viral fever should not share their things with other people as they may also get infected.

  Significance Of Rain

A human needs freshwater to maintain his immune system and digestive system. The availability of fresh water helps in supporting the existence of human life. The toxins of the human body come out in the form of urine and sweat.

All plants, grass, trees and flowers need water for their survival and flourishment. When the rainy season comes, the rainwater gets stored in the ground which is used by the seeds for their growth and nourishment.

The rainy season changes the atmosphere of the surroundings. The temperature gets lower and the environment becomes cool. The rainfall increases the water level in the rivers and lakes so that animals can use this water for drinking. The soil soaks the rainwater which plants use to convert solar energy into nutrition.

People can store this rainwater by using the technique of rainwater harvesting. From the rooftop, the water moves down through the pipe and gets collected in the tanks or cisterns.

Rainwater can also become a source for generating electricity which is known as hydroelectricity. Due to rainfall, there is an increment in the water level of the ponds and lakes. People also make small ponds to collect this rainwater and use this water to generate electricity.

FAQs on Rainy Season Essay

1.Why is the rainy season important?

The rainy season is one of the most important seasons in the year that helps our farmers to cultivate lands and grow new harvests. India is a country where the prime occupation is agriculture. It means that many crops depend on the rainwater collected in the ponds, canals, rivers, and beneath the soil. The elevated water table in the rainy season also becomes the prime source of drinking water in many rural areas in different states. Apart from the agricultural benefits, this season also relieves the flora and fauna from the scorching heat of the summer days. New plants grow and the food chain becomes more fortified again. Plants are the base of a food chain as they establish the base by producing food. This is why the rainy season is so important for every living being.

2.Why does the Rainy Season differ from One State to the Other?

Due to the diverse topographical features of India, the rainy season varies from one state to the other. Winds containing heavy moisture accumulate and get obstructed by the Himalayan Ranges. This is the first phase of the formation of clouds. In other states, moisture containing clouds originate in the oceans and shower torrentially for a few months. Even though many states fall in the same tropical region, the rainfall varies a lot. Rajasthan gets very little rainfall whereas West Bengal receives a lot of rainfall during the monsoon season. It is all about the geographical significance of our country that determines the amount of rainfall in every state. Meghalaya receives heavy rainfall across the year due to its intertwined position among the Himalayan Ranges.

3.How Rainwater is being harvested in the cities?

Rainwater is harvested by digging ponds in shallow places in rural areas. In cities also, shallow ponds accumulate rainwater and contribute to the escalation of the water table beneath the superficial soil. Due to the over-construction of concrete buildings, it is hard to accommodate water leading to water-logging and floods in different cities. Nowadays, big communities and complexes are learning to use rainwater and store or let it pass in the soil by using different means. It not only makes the water table regain its level but also makes a metropolitan complex sustainable in terms of water usage.

4. What is the southwest monsoon and which factors influence this monsoon?

The heavy rainfall brought by the winds of the southwest to southern Asia is known as the southwest monsoon. This monsoon comes in June, strikes the Malabar coast and leaves the country in November. In India, food production depends on this monsoon. The factors that influence the southwest monsoon are listed below:

Tropical easterly jet

Intertropical convergence zone

Subtropical jet stream

Formation of low pressure over the Tibetan Plateau

High pressure in the south of the Indian ocean

The Monsoon

Avatar

Ahmed Abu Turab, Class 6, Saint Xavier’s School, Kaliyaganj

The Monsoon

Monsoon is one of the 5 chief seasons in the Indian peninsula. After days of endless heat, the rain returns to impart a spirit of joy, relaxation and adventure. Steady downpours on banana leaves concoct a musical sensation delightful to the ear.

The earliest of the rains rush forth, a sweeping torrent, with a relentless fury that beats down upon cement, mud and tree. Children as well as adults are engulfed with the life-giving aura of the rain.

As the monsoon advances, the barren lands once more are clothed with verdant embrace. Moss springs from rocks, grass begins to form, hedges revive amidst the undulating clouds. Life, once more, begins to flow through the veins of Mother Nature.

An occasional snake, awakened from its slumber, crawls out of its burrow. These visitors, though not always lethal, are often perceived to be cold blooded killers, and the mere sight of a snake is enough to frighten some to the bone. For me, these creatures have always been a subject of fascination. Their smooth, glossy scales, inward curving teeth and serpentine build make them one of Nature’s most intriguing beings.

As the rains come to a close, the once misty skies give way to new rays of the sun. The radiant orb’s influence is seen and felt throughout the land. The aftermath of the rains produces a fine soothing aroma.

Overall, monsoon stands as one of the most impactful seasons that occur in the Indian peninsula. The monsoon atmosphere is a delight to even the most fevered brow.

essay on rainy season 200 words

Paragraph on Rainy Season – 150 Words for Classes 4, 5 Children

Rainy Season or monsoon reason comes after the hot and humid summer season. It brings respite from the loo winds and enriches flora and fauna around. The distribution pattern of rainfall differs from state to state. The monsoon first reaches Kerala and then spreads over to other parts of the country. Different regional practices are associated with the monsoon season.

It is the time of the year that kids enjoy the most as they splash around in rainwater puddles and make paper boats that float in these ponds. Many festivals are widely celebrated and tourism thrives. Rainforests benefit from the incessant rainfall. The only downside to the season is that people fall sick more often and new kinds of diseases crop up. Mosquitoes grow and multiply and become a nuisance for the common people. However, there is nothing that equals the elusive beauty of rain as it patters along a tin shed.

Paragraph on Rainy Season – 200 Words for Classes 6, 7, 8 Students

The Rainy Season, also known as the monsoon season begins in the middle of June and continues up till early September. It comes after the end of the scorching summer season. It’s the time when most of the rainfall occurs; the sky is generally cloudy throughout the season. The rivers and ponds that have lost water through evaporation due to the heat are now replenished.

The rain showers bring much relief to men and animals. The rain cools the air and the temperature drops making the weather extremely pleasant. There is more greenery around us during this season as flora and fauna thrive. This weather is great for agriculture as it augments the traditional and conventional irrigation techniques. Optimal rainfall is crucial for crop cultivation.

However, excess rainfall, characterized by heavy showers damages crops and sometimes leads to loss of lives. Uncontrollable rainfall can cause floods and river water levels to surge dramatically. During this season, we get the chance to relinquish many delectable fruits like litchi, peaches, and Pomegranates. These fruits are known to boost immunity and taste heavenly. Diseases and infections are commonly associated with this season as stagnant rainwater provides a breeding ground for various diseases like dengue and malaria.

Paragraph on Rainy Season – 250 to 300 Words for Classes 9, 10, 11, 12 and Competitive Exams Students

The Rainy Season or more formally addressed as the monsoon season reaches India around the mid of June and stays until late august/early September. This season is primarily categorized by heavy incessant rainfall and humid conditions. Despite the prevalence of humidity, the cool showers bring much-needed respite from the scorching sun.

As it rains, dry barren ponds and puddles are infused with life again. Rivers, yet again, flow at their full capacity and birds chirp all day long. Rains have, since times immemorial, been the favorite season of the land. It fuels flora and fauna enough to bear the brunt of dry barren summers and harsh freezing winters. Flowers bloom in all their full grandeur and crop roots soak up water during this time of the year.

Pre-monsoon showers that precede the actual onset of the monsoon season are known by different names in different regions of the country. They are known as “mango showers “in Karnataka as they help in the early ripening of the juicy fruit. The intensity of rainfall is not uniform but is scattered rather inconsistently. Areas like Cherrapunji receive the most rainfall while areas in the Thar Desert Rajasthan receive scanty rainfall. The rainfall distribution is influenced by numerous factors like the position of mountain ranges and the direction of monsoon winds.

It is not all roses here as the monsoon season does come with a few troubles. Diseases like dengue and malaria spread rampantly during this season. Excessive rainfall has caused floods like the  Kedarnath flood in the state of Uttarakhand. Nonetheless, the beauty and euphoria of the Rainy Season are way more magical and encapsulating and this work of Mother Nature is appreciated by the whole of mankind.

The rainy season is a time when grey clouds fill the sky, and it rains a lot. During this time, the world looks very green and beautiful. When it rains, the ground smells nice and fresh. Farmers are happy when it rains because the rain helps their crops grow. The rain also fills up the rivers and lakes. When it rains a lot, there can be certain problems, like floods and muddy roads. But the rainy season is also a time when everything grows and looks new again. It’s a special time of year that helps keep the world alive and healthy.

Short Essay On Rainy Season

Here is a short essay on rainy season in English for children to use as a foundation to add more key points from different perspectives on a subject:

My favourite is the rainy season, which begins in July in India when the southwest monsoon winds blow. It occurs in the Hindi months of asadha and shawan . Everyone likes it because the fresh air and rainwater make the air clear, calm, and clean. Plants, trees, and grasses turn to a beautiful shade of green. After a lengthy period of scorching heat, the plants and trees sprout new leaves as they receive natural water. The entire surroundings exude lush vegetation that is pleasing to see. My favourite festivals, such as Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Teej, and Dussehra, are all celebrated during the rainy season. We also like eating many fresh fruits and fully ripe mangoes during this season. While it is raining, my mother prepares excellent dishes like pakoras, halwa, and idli to relish our taste buds and set the mood for the season.

Long Essay On Rainy Season

Here is a simple sample essay for class 3 about the rainy season.

The rainy season is one of India’s four major seasons. The rainy season is divided into months in each region (such as the Mediterranean, which has dry summers and wet winters. There is no such month (or rainy season) in tropical rainforests because rainfall is evenly spread throughout the year. In India, the rainy season lasts for about three months. It occurs every year after the summer season, notably in July, and lasts until September. The monarch butterfly migrates from Mexico, and several reptiles and amphibians begin to lay eggs around this time. To avoid flooding, animals that live underground migrate to higher ground.

The rainy season plays a pivotal role for countries like India, where a large number of the population depends on agriculture. Everyone enjoys the rainy season because it provides a much-needed break from the blazing sun. It cools everyone by removing all of the heat from the environment. It promotes the proper growth of plants, trees, grasses, crops, and vegetables. It’s also a good time for animals because there are plenty of green grasses and small plants to munch on. Rainwater fills up every natural resource, such as rivers, ponds, and lakes. With enough water to drink and thrive, all the birds and animals are content. The rainy season is also important for maintaining groundwater levels and natural resource levels. All living and non-living things rely on the natural water, which is replenished throughout the rainy season to last until the following season. Rainwater can also be used to generate energy, a process known as hydroelectricity. The water levels of the ponds and lakes tend to rise as a result of the rain. Small ponds are also built to collect rainwater and then used to create electricity.

Ways To Stay Safe & Healthy During The Rainy Season

Following are some guidelines that everyone should follow to stay healthy and safe during the monsoon season:

1. Wear Appropriate Rain Gear

People must wear rain gear such as waterproof boots, hooded raincoats, and umbrellas while venturing out during the rainy season. Children with a weakened immune system should not go outside in the rain without suitable rain gear, as they may acquire a cold.

2. Warm Water Showers

If kids are soaked, it is recommended that they take a warm shower. This will assist their bodies in regaining control and returning to a normal temperature. People can also bathe with hot water because the temperature drops dramatically during the monsoon season.

3. Basic Safety

Children and adults participating in outdoor activities such as swimming should return to the campus if they hear thunder, even if it has not yet begun to rain. Avoiding open areas like playgrounds and metal items like light poles is recommended.

4. Cleanliness

People develop a common cold during the rainy season; thus, cleanliness is crucial. Before doing any job or eating, we should always sanitise our hands. When we go home, we should always wash our hands and feet, especially if we have contact with floodwater.

5. Prevent Water Stagnation

Stagnant water provides a breeding ground for mosquitos, which carry diseases like malaria and dengue fever. To avoid this, homeowners should drain still water sources such as pet water bowls, planter trays and plates, and inflatable pools around their homes regularly.

6. Keep Away From Floodwater

Keep your children away from floodwaters. Wading in floodwater, especially barefoot, is a fun activity for them. Children should not enter floodwaters because they may contract leptospirosis, a bacterial disease. They should also sanitise any toys that have been polluted by this water before using them.

The rainy season is the most enjoyable time of the year. Also, for countries like India that have agriculture as the backbone of the economy, it is more important than any other material. The rainy season is a wonderful season of joy.

Your child will learn about rainy season composition and think about the topic and share their perspective while honing writing, expressiveness, vocabulary, and grammar abilities. Essays for grades 1, 2 & 3 kids can help them learn to express themselves verbally and even consider the matter from the perspective of others.

1. What is the rainy season?

The rainy season is when a region experiences significantly higher rainfall than other times. It is also known as the monsoon season in some parts of the world.

2. Why does it rain more during the rainy season?

During the rainy season, warm, moist ocean air moves inland, bringing heavy rainfall. Changes in wind patterns and temperature differences between the land and the ocean cause this.

3. What common mistakes do you avoid when writing a rainy season essay?

Here are some mistakes to avoid when writing an essay on the rainy season:

  • Using overly complex vocabulary that may be difficult for the reader to understand
  • Straying off-topic or including irrelevant information
  • Repeating the same points multiple times throughout the essay
  • Making unsupported claims or generalisations without evidence
  • Failing to proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors

We hope the sample essays above will assist your kids in writing a superb composition about the rainy season in India.

The theme of “Pappachi’s Moth” by Arundhati Roy revolves around the complexities of human emotions, particularly jealousy, resentment, and regret. It explores how unfulfilled ambitions and societal expectations can lead to destructive behavior, impacting not just the individual but also their relationships and family dynamics. The story also touches on themes of gender roles, power, and the long-lasting effects of unresolved bitterness on both personal and familial levels.   Top

The lesson “Pappachi’s Moth” by Arundhati Roy talks about the life of Pappachi, a retired government official, and his wife Mammachi, who turns to pickle-making after his retirement. The story begins with Mammachi starting a pickle and jam business after Pappachi retired from his government job in Delhi and moved to Ayemenem. She initially makes banana jam and mango pickle for a local fair, and they sell out quickly. This success leads her to continue making these products throughout the year. Pappachi struggles with his retirement and feels humiliated because he is older than Mammachi and not as active. He is upset that Mammachi is doing well while he feels left out and irrelevant. Even though Mammachi is almost blind and has trouble with her eyesight, Pappachi refuses to help her because he considers pickle-making beneath his former high-ranking status. His jealousy makes him resentful, and he begins to beat Mammachi regularly and destroys her violin.

When their son Chacko comes home from Oxford, he finds Pappachi beating Mammachi. Chacko, who is strong from rowing, confronts his father and warns him never to harm Mammachi again. Pappachi, in response, becomes sullen and isolated. He destroys his favorite rocking chair and refuses to speak to Mammachi, using other people to communicate with her instead. Pappachi tries to destroy Mammachi’s reputation by sewing buttons onto his shirts to suggest that she neglects him. He also buys a sky-blue Plymouth car, which he keeps just for himself and does not allow anyone in the family to use. This car becomes a symbol of his revenge and frustration. The lesson goes on to reveal that Pappachi was a respected entomologist, but he suffered a significant disappointment when the moth he discovered was not named after him. Although he initially thought it was a new species, it was later identified as a variation of an existing species. Years later, the moth was finally recognized as a new species, but Pappachi had retired and could not claim the discovery. This led to further bitterness. Pappachi’s moth, often referred to as “Pappachi’s Moth,” shows his bitterness and moodiness. Despite his ill temper, Pappachi continued to dress formally until his death. Mammachi kept a newspaper cut out about Pappachi’s death, and during his funeral, she cried more out of habit than love, showing how she had become used to his presence and the difficulties of their life together. Ammu, their daughter, explains to her twin children that people can become used to even bad things, like beatings, over time.   Top

Top

Passage:

Mammachi had started making pickles commercially soon after Pappachi retired from government service in Delhi and came to live in Ayemenem. The Kottayam Bible Society was having a fair and asked Mammachi to make some of her famous banana jam and tender mango pickle. It sold quickly, and Mammachi found that she had more orders than she could cope with. Thrilled with her success, she decided to persist with the pickles and jam, and soon found herself busy all year around. Pappachi, for his part, was having trouble coping with the ignominy of retirement. He was seventeen years older than Mammachi and realized with a shock that he was an old man when his wife was still in her prime.

Word Meanings:

pickles (n): vegetables (especially cucumbers) preserved in vinegar or brine.

commercially (adv): related to making a profit or being intended for sale.

fair (n): a type of entertainment in a field or park

persist (v): to continue to exist or try to do something despite difficulties

thrilled (adj.): extremely happy or excited

ignominy (n): public shame or disgrace

prime (adj.): someone or something is at its best, most successful, or most productive stage

Explanation: Once Pappachi retired from his job and moved to Ayemenem with Mammachi, she started making pickles and jams to sell. Her banana jam and mango pickle were so popular at a local fair organized by the Kottayam Bible Society that she quickly got more orders than she could handle. Excited by her success, she decided to keep making these products throughout the year. On the other hand, Pappachi faced difficulties with his retirement. He was 17 years older than Mammachi and felt upset and embarrassed because he realized he was getting old while his wife was still lively and successful.

Though Mammachi had conical corneas and was already practically blind, Pappachi would not help her with the pickle-making, because he did not consider pickle-making a suitable job for a high-ranking ex-government official. He had always been a jealous man, so he greatly resented the attention his wife was suddenly getting, He slouched around the compound in his immaculately tailored suit, weaving sullen circles around mounds of red chillies and freshly powdered yellow turmeric, watching Mammachi supervise the buying, the weighing, the salting and drying, of limes and tender mangoes. Every night he beat her with a brass flower vase. The beatings weren’t new. What was new was only the frequency with which they took place. One night Pappachi broke the bow of Mammachi’s violin and threw it in the river.

conical (adj.): shaped like a cone

corneas (n): the transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris and pupil

resented (v): f elt bitterness or indignation at a situation, action, or person

weaving (v): forming fabric by interlacing threads

sullen (adj.): bad-tempered and sulky; showing irritation or ill humor by a gloomy silence

slouch (v): to stand, sit or walk with the shoulders hanging forward and the head bent slightly over so that you look tired and bored

immaculate (adj.): perfectly clean or tidy

mound (n): a large pile of earth, stones, etc. like a small hill. Here, pile of red chillies

bow (n): a thin piece of wood with hair from the tail of a horse stretched along it, which is used to play musical instruments that have strings. Violins are played with bows.

Explanation: Despite Mammachi’s severe vision and eye problems, Pappachi refused to help her with making pickles. He thought that pickle-making was below him because he was a high-ranking government official before retiring. Pappachi was also very jealous of the attention Mammachi was getting for her successful business. He spent his time walking around their property, dressed in his fancy suit, while Mammachi worked hard managing the pickles. He hated her success so much that he started to beat her regularly with a flower vase. Although he had been abusive before, the beatings became more frequent. One night, in a fit of anger, he even broke the bow of Mammachi’s violin and threw it into the river.

Passage :

Then Chacko came home for a summer vacation from Oxford. He had grown to be a big man and was, in those days, strong from rowing for Balliol. A week after he arrived he found Pappachi beating Mammachi in the study. Chacko strode into the room, caught Pappachi’s vase-hand and twisted it around his back.

rowing (n): the sport or activity of rowing a boat

Balliol (n): here, the Balliol College in Oxford, England

Explanation : When Chacko came home for his summer vacation from Oxford, he had become a strong and physically impressive young man from his rowing activities. About a week after his arrival, he found Pappachi attacking Mammachi in the study room. Angered by the sight, Chacko quickly entered the room, grabbed Pappachi’s hand (which was holding the vase), and forcefully twisted it behind his back to stop the violence.

‘I never want this to happen again, ‘he told his father, ‘Ever.’

For the rest of that day Pappachi sat in the verandah and stared stonily out at the ornamental

garden, ignoring the plates of food that Kochu Maria brought him. Late at night he went into his

study and brought out his favorite mahogany rocking chair. He put it down in the middle of the

driveway and smashed it into little bits with a plumber’s monkey wrench. He left it there in the

moonlight, a heap of varnished wicker and splintered wood. He never touched Mammachi again. But he never spoke to her either as long as he lived. When he needed anything he used Kochu Maria or Baby Kochamma as intermediaries.

smash (v): to cause something to break noisily into a lot of small pieces.

Intermediary: someone who carries messages between people who are unwilling or unable to meet.

verandah (n): a raised, covered, sometimes partly closed area, often made of wood, on the front or side of a building

stonily (adv): in a way that shows no sympathy or kindness

ornamental (adj.): beautiful rather than useful

mahogany (n): a dark red-brown wood used to make furniture

driveway (n): a private area in front of a house or other building onto which you can drive and park your car

varnished (adj.): covered with varnish, a liquid that is painted onto wood or paintings to protect the surface, or the hard shiny surface it produces when it dries

wicker (adj.): made of very thin pieces of wood twisted together

splintered (n): a small, sharp, broken piece of wood, glass, plastic, or similar material

wrench (n): a tool for holding and turning objects, especially one that can be made larger and smaller to hold different sized objects

Explanation: After Chacko held Pappachi’s hand to stop the abuse, he told Pappachi that he never wanted to see him hurt Mammachi again. For the rest of that day, Pappachi sat outside on the verandah, staring blankly at the garden and ignoring the food that was brought to him. Later that night, he went to his study, took out his favorite chair, and broke it into pieces with a wrench. He left the broken chair outside in the moonlight. From then on, Pappachi never harmed Mammachi again, but he also stopped speaking to her. Instead, he communicated his needs through others, like Kochu Maria or Baby Kochamma.

In the evenings, when he knew visitors were expected, he would sit on the verandah and sew buttons that weren’t missing onto his shirts, to create the impression that Mammachi neglected him. To some small degree he did succeed in further corroding Ayemenem’s view of working wives.

neglected (adj.): not receiving enough care or attention

corroding (v): to destroy or be destroyed

Explanation: In the evenings, when Pappachi knew that people would be coming over to their house, he would sit outside and sew buttons onto his shirts, even though the buttons were not missing. He did this to give the idea to people that Mammachi was neglecting him. By doing this, Pappachi made people in Ayemenem think even worse of working wives. It made it look like Mammachi was not taking good care of him because she was busy with her pickle business.

He bought the sky blue Plymouth from an old Englishman in Munnar, He became a familiar sight in Ayemenem, coasting importantly down the narrow road in his wide car, looking outwardly elegant but sweating freely inside his woolen suits. He wouldn’t allow Mammachi or anyone else in the family to use it, or even to sit in it. The Plymouth was Pappachi’s revenge.

plymouth (n): Plymouth was an automobile brand that was discontinued after the 2001 model year

outwardly (adv): in a way that relates to how people, situations, or things seem to be, rather than how they are inside

coasting (v): to move forward in a vehicle without using the engine, usually down a hill

Explanation: Pappachi bought a sky blue Plymouth from an old Englishman in Munnar. He drove it around Ayemenem, where it became a well-known sight. Though he looked stylish and elegant in his car, he would actually sweat a lot because he would wear his woolen suits. He wouldn’t let Mammachi or anyone else in the family use the car or even sit in it. The Plymouth was his way of getting back at them.

Pappachi had been an Imperial Entomologist at the Pusa Institute. After Independence, when the British left, his designation was changed from Imperial Entomologist to Joint Director, Entomology. The year he retired, he had risen to a rank equivalent to Director.

entomologist (v): the scientist who studies insects.

designation (n): an official title or name

equivalent (adj.): having the same amount, value, purpose, qualities, etc

imperial (adj.): relating or belonging to an empire, here the British empire

Explanation: Pappachi used to be an Entomologist working for the British government, at the Pusa Institute. After India gained independence and the British left, his job title changed to Joint Director of Entomology. By the time he retired, he had reached a rank similar to that of a Director.

His life’s greatest setback was not having had the moth that he had discovered named after him.

moth (n): an insect with wings that is similar to a butterfly, usually flies at night, and is attracted to light

setback (n): something that causes delay or stops progress

Explanation: The biggest disappointment in Pappachi’s life was that the moth he had discovered was not named after him.

It fell into his drink one evening while he was sitting in the verandah of a rest house after a long day in the field. As he picked it out he noticed its unusually dense dorsal tufts, he took a closer look. With growing excitement he mounted it, measured it and the next morning placed it in the sun for a few hours for the alcohol to evaporate. Then he caught the first train back to Delhi. To taxonomic attention and, he hoped, fame, after six unbearable months of anxiety, to Pappachi’s intense disappointment, he was told that his moth had finally been identified as a slightly unusual race of a well-known species that belonged to the tropical family, Lymantridae.

dorsal (n): of, on or near the back of an animal

tuft (n): a number of short pieces, especially of hair or grass, which closely grow together or are held together near the base.

taxonomic (n): systematic naming and organizing of things, especially plants and animals into groups which share similar qualities

mounted (adj.): something that is mounted is fixed to a wall, in a frame, etc., so that it can be looked at or used

Explanation: One evening, while Pappachi was relaxing on the verandah of a rest house after a long day, a moth fell into his drink. When he took it out, he noticed that the moth had unusual features. Excited, he carefully mounted and measured the moth, then left it in the sun to dry out the alcohol. The next morning, he rushed back to Delhi, hoping to gain fame with the discovery. However, after waiting for six months, he was disappointed to find out that the moth was just a rare version of a known species and not a new discovery.

The real blow came twelve years after, when, as a consequence of a radical taxonomic reshuffle, lepidopterists decided that Pappachi’s moth was, in fact, a separate species and genus hitherto unknown to science. By then, of course, Pappachi had retired and moved to Ayemenem. It was too late for him to assert his claim to the discovery. His moth was named after the Acting Director of the Department of Entomology, a junior officer whom Pappachi had always disliked.

radical (adj.): believing or expressing the belief that there should be great or extreme social or political change

lepidopterists (n): someone who studies butterflies and moths

hitherto (adv): until now or until a particular time

genus (n): a group of animals or plants, more closely related than a family, but less similar than a species

Explanation: Twelve years later, scientists decided that Pappachi’s moth was actually a new type of moth never seen before. By then, Pappachi was already retired and living in Ayemenem. It was too late for him to claim the discovery. The moth was named after a junior officer who was now in charge of the Entomology Department, someone Pappachi didn’t like. This incident increased the bitterness in him.

In the years to come, even though he had been ill-humored long before he discovered the moth, Pappachi’s Moth was held responsible for his black moods and sudden bouts of temper. Its pernicious ghost gray, furry and with unusually dense dorsal tufts haunted every house that he ever lived in. It tormented him and his children and his children’s children.

pernicious (adj.): having a very harmful effect or influence.

ill-humored (adj.): unfriendly or in a bad mood

tormented (n): great mental suffering and unhappiness, or great physical pain

Explanation: Even though Pappachi was already grumpy before he found the moth, people started blaming it for his bad moods and sudden moments of anger. The moth, with its gray color and thick fur, seemed to bring a lot of trouble and unhappiness wherever he lived. It became a symbol of Pappachi’s bad temper and affected his family too, causing problems for them for a long time.

Until the day he died, even in the stifling Ayemenem heat, every single day, Pappachi wore a well-dressed three-piece suit and his gold pocket watch. On his dressing table, next to his cologne and silver hair brush, he kept a picture of himself as a young man, with his hair slicked down, taken in a photographer’s studio in Vienna where he had done the six-month diploma course that had qualified him to apply for the post of Imperial Entomologist. It was during those few months they spent in Vienna that Mammachi took her first lessons on the violin. The lessons were abruptly discontinued when Mammachi’s teacher, Launsky-Tieffenthal, made the mistake of telling Pappachi that his wife was exceptionally talented and, in his opinion, potentially a concert class.

stifling (adj.): extremely hot and unpleasant

cologne (n): a type of perfume, liquid with a pleasant smell used on the skin

abruptly (adj.): sudden and unexpected

exceptionally (adv): in a way that is much greater than usual, especially in skill, intelligence, quality, etc.

Explanation: Until he died, Pappachi always wore a formal three-piece suit and his gold pocket watch every day, even though it was very hot in Ayemenem. On his dressing table, next to his perfume and hairbrush, he kept a photo of himself as a young man from when he studied in Vienna. He had spent six months there to become an Imperial Entomologist. During this time, Mammachi started taking violin lessons, but the lessons ended suddenly when her teacher told Pappachi that she was very talented and could be a great performer.

Mammachi pasted, in the family photograph album, the clipping from the Indian Express that reported Pappachi’s death. It said:

Noted entomologist, Shri Benaan John Ipe, son of late Rev. E John Ipe of Ayemenem (popularly known as Punnyan Kunju), suffering a massive heart attack and passed away at the Kottayam

General Hospital last night. He developed chest pains around 1.05 a.m. and was rushed to hospital. The end came at 2.45 a.m. Shri Ipe had been keeping indifferent health since last six months. He is survived by his wife Soshamma and two children.

clipping (n): a piece that has been cut off something

Explanation: Mammachi included a newspaper clipping in the family photo album that reported Pappachi’s death. It stated that Shri Benaan John Ipe, a well-known entomologist from Ayemenem, had suffered a massive heart attack and died at Kottayam General Hospital. The report mentioned that he had experienced chest pains around 1:05 a.m. and was taken to the hospital, where he passed away at 2:45 a.m. It noted that he had been in poor health for the previous six months and that he was survived by his wife, Soshamma, and their two children.

At Pappachi’s funeral, Mammachi cried and her contact lenses slid around in her eyes. Ammu

told the twins that Mammachi was crying more because she was used to him than she loved him. She was used to having him slouching around the pickle factory, and was used to being beaten from time to time. Ammu said that human beings were creatures of habit, and it was amazing the kind of things they could get used to. You only had to look around you, Ammu said, to see that beatings with brass vases were the least of them.

funeral (n): a (usually religious) ceremony for burying or burning the body of a dead person

contact lenses (n): a small round curved piece of transparent plastic, worn on the surface of the eye to improve your sight

Explanation: At Pappachi’s funeral, Mammachi cried, and her contact lenses kept moving around in her eyes. Ammu told the twins that Mammachi’s crying was more about being used to Pappachi than truly loving him. She was used to him being around and to the times he would beat her. Ammu said that people get used to many things just because they are used to them, and that even being beaten with brass vases was just one example of this.
