The need for a specialized institution for medical research to address health problems of national concern was recognized in the early 1950's. Plans were subsequently drawn and a presidential decree was issued in 1957 for the establishment of the Medical Institute to be located in Alexandria. This institute was later attached to the National Research Center and the Ministry of Scientific Research.Since its establishment it has been housed in the same building it occupies today at 165, Horreya Avenue, Hadara, Alexandria .The laboratories of the institute were prepared and work in July 1963 as Medical Research Institute.

Since its establishment the objectives of the Medical Research Institute were identified as Clinical and basic research in different fields of medicine , Diagnosis and treatment of special cases including performing difficult major operations , Training of physicians in modern and novel methods of diagnosis and treatment, and introducing such methods to other hospitals and treatment centers and Issuing periodical pamphlets on the latest international medical and scientific achievements and the results of the research.

Egypt's Health Minister Hala Zayed speaks during a news conference announcing the details of a vaccination campaign against the coronavirus disease outbreak, in Cairo, Egypt December 23, 2020. REUTERS

CAIRO – 28 April 2021: Egypt’s Health Minister Hala Zayed said on Tuesday that cooperation is underway with the Harvard University’s Faculty of Medicine to establish a national institute for health and medical research.

The institute will be set up in the New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo, a statement by the Health Ministry read.

The institute will offer training opportunities for doctors in Egypt and, therefore help them to offer better services to patients.

The health ministry spokesman, Khaled Megahed, said the institute will include a center for general health researches and another center for clinical researches.

This comes while the country is facing a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which, according to Zayed earlier this month, globally represents a surge in cases and deaths.

On Tuesday, Egypt reported 1,003 new coronavirus cases, the highest in more than three months.

In total, the country has reported 224,517 cases and 13,168 related deaths since the pandemic started.

The country has started its vaccination campaign in January and allows anyone above 18 living in Egypt to register to take the vaccine.

Currently, the focus is on medical workers, the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases.

The country has received more than 1.5 million vaccine doses from Sinopharm and AstraZeneca and is planning to receive millions others during the coming period.

Ain Shams Medical Research Center

Ain Shams Medical Research Center ( MASRI ) strives to be a leading center in scientific research in Egypt and the entire region, as it contains 6 departments for scientific research, In cooperation with the Faculties of Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, as well as the corresponding Faculties of Medicine at the regional level, in addition to cooperation with the Universities of Zewail and the Nile.

Center objectives:

The center aims to develop the medical and biomedical research and translating it into benefits for society, for a better health future through four main objectives: promoting excellence, developing talented researchers, influencing research and engaging patients, the public and professionals in cooperation with biomedical and health researchers and liaising with decision-makers, as well as providing opportunities Multidisciplinary across academia, industry and health care in its various forms within the biomedical and health research community.

Center Departments:

The center contains 6 departments for pre-clinical research, genome research, and stem cell research, as well as an accredited center for clinical research, a unit for treatment and research of hepatitis and a unit for bioinformatics. In addition to the establishment of a cancer biobank for the first time, which is the largest in the Arab region, and contains tissues and organic samples, and the associated clinical characteristics for about 28 thousand patients. Through the center, researchers aspire to know the genetic characteristics of Egyptian cancer patients, which in turn will be reflected in drug discovery and careful selection of drugs in the so-called personalized medicine.

It is noteworthy that the center is closely related to the Drug Discovery Center at the College of Pharmacy, with the aim of discovering new patterns of medicine in various branches, especially liver tumors, adding that the center has several partnerships with Egyptian and international research centers such as Zewail University, the National Research Center, and Fudan University of China, which are ranked at the center 40 In the world in cancer treatment, the French University of Montpellier. He pointed out that the total income of the center from joint research amounted to about 200 thousand dollars with some American research bodies.

Center Board:

The Board of Directors consists of several Egyptian and foreign scientists, including: Professor Ahmed Kasib, Head of the Liver Tumor Unit at the MD Anderson Institute in the United States of America, and Dr. Pascal Pujol, Head of the Genetics Unit at the University of Montpellier, France, Mr. Tarek Al-Kholy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Saib Bank.

THE fifth annual report of the Research Institute and the Endemic Diseases Hospitals, Cairo, by the director, Dr. M. Khalil Bey, contains a summary of the reports of the scientific sections and the clinical reports, including investigations on Egyptian splenomegaly, anaemias and various parasitic affections. A report is also included of the work of the Khanka Malaria Research Station. This gives the results of a mosquito survey of the area, with the species of mosquitoes found, and a description of some of the preventive measures undertaken. These include drainage, filling up of water holes and clearance of water-weeds in places. Breeding places of mosquitoes are treated with Paris green when there are Anophelines only, or with mazout oil if Culex larvae are also present. In future, the Institute will be named the “Fouad the First Institute and Hospital for Tropical Diseases”.
