‘Major’ movie review: An emotional tribute that works

There are different ways to approach a biopic of a soldier who was killed on a mission. One would be a clinical approach that delineates the soldier’s mettle, culminating in a nail-biting finish that is replete with minute details of the risky operation. The other would be through an emotional lens, attempting to capture the man behind the hero. Director Sashi Kiran Tikka and actor Adivi Sesh who has written the story and screenplay of Major , inspired by the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was killed in the 26/11 attacks of 2008, choose the latter method. Their attempt is not perfect, but effective enough to leave viewers moved and thinking of soldiers who stake everything for the nation. And thankfully, there are no jingoistic overtones.

During pre-release interviews, Sashi mentioned how Sandeep’s parents recalled memories of their son, in a non-chronological manner, with the stronger memories popping up first. In the film, K Unnikrishnan (Prakash Raj) recalls Sandeep’s (Adivi Sesh) memories in a similar, non-linear manner. We all know how Sandeep’s story would end during the 26/11 attacks. But Major is not only about him fighting till his last breath, saving hostages at The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, from the terrorists. It is about Sandeep, the person, whose loyalty to the nation came above his responsibility towards his parents, sister and spouse.

Certain portions feel airbrushed, like the childhood scenes that try to establish Sandeep’s fascination for the uniform. And later, when he intervenes in a domestic abuse incident, unmindful of the risk. We get that Sandeep put others’ safety above him, but maybe these segments could have been written and depicted more effectively. The Army training montages are picturised beautifully but do not show Sandeep’s transformation. Did he fail, face setbacks and learn from them? We do not get enough of that learning curve. He is earnest, determined and aces nearly everything.

But these are minor misgivings in the larger picture. As a plot device, narrating Sandeep’s story through his parents Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi helps to give the emotional gravitas. There’s a delicate, sensitive manner in which the relationship between Sandeep and Isha (Saiee Manjrekar) is portrayed, with its breezy romance, warts and all. At one point, when Isha laments that no one would know the sacrifices made by a commando’s family, it hits the right spot.

A deeply moving segment also involves Isha, and later Sandeep, telling each other at crucial moments, ‘It is better you do not know’. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues convey a lot without melodrama.

A large portion of the film unfolds within The Taj Mahal Palace hotel where the Mumbai police and the elite NSG commandos need to make sense of the maze ahead of them. The terrorists have the blueprint of the hotel and the access cards, while the protecting forces only have their courage, apart from their rifles. There are several wow moments during the operation, almost like a mainstream action thriller. But it is done without diluting the battle that is on. There is also a terrific segment where Sandeep manipulates the media which is live telecasting, unmindful of the harm it is doing to the hostages.

Vamsi Patchipulusu’s cinematography is an asset, moving from the cosy, warm portrayal of Sandeep’s early life and then shifting to the action mode. Sricharan Pakala’s music befits the breezy romance and family drama.

One can either mull over how much cinematic liberty and dramatisation was required to make this tribute or soak in the narrative that touches the right emotional chords. What makes this tribute work is also the performances all around. Adivi Sesh is effective in showing young Sandeep’s innocence and later as the soldier who tells his peers, ‘don’t come up, I’ll handle them’. This is an internalised performance and his career best. Anish Kuruvilla as the hotel manager and Sobhita Dhulipala as businesswoman Pramoda Reddy are good in their brief, pivotal parts. Saiee Manjrekar is good as Isha. Murali Sharma is effective as always. A word of praise for Prakash Raj and Revathy. Their emotions in the closing moments of the film might move you to tears.

Major lives up to its promise of paying a befitting tribute to Sandeep Unnikrishnan. Do watch out for the end credits to catch snapshots of Sandeep’s life.

Story: Sandeep Unnikrishnan is a do-gooder with the potential to be a hero. No wonder the Army was his natural choice. He became a trainer in the National Security Guards, the elite force that was called into action when Mumbai came under a deadly attack by terrorists on November 26, 2008. The film is about how Sandeep tries to save as many lives as he can during the attack.

Analysis: It’s the story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a brave soldier who sacrificed his life for the nation; but it also depicts the 26/11 attacks. And director Sashi Kiran Tikka submits to the vision of the story told by screenplay writer Adivi Sesh.

The narration is through the eyes of the protagonist's father (Prakash Raj). The makers have used a back-and-forth style to showcase Sandeep’s life and sacrifice – it covers his childhood, college life, romance with his to-be wife, and then the anti-terror operation.

The film delivers what it promises – a portrait of a brave-heart.

Major is Sesh's one-man show for the most part. He wants to tell the story sincerely. And he does it with conviction. And this is undoubtedly Sesh’s career best performance. He has managed to capture the true essence of Sandeep’s life and his heroic efforts impressively in the latter half of the movie.

The action choreography is engrossing in the second half. The terrorists have been shown as ruthless but not in a cliched way. This is where Major shines — it doesn't make the villainy in-your-face. Its focus is firmly on the hero, his bravery and exceptional thinking.

The film’s emotional appeal, particularly towards the end, leaves everyone with moist eyes.

Vamsi Patchipulusu's cinematography and Sricharan Pakala's music are stand-out technical features. Saiee Manjrekar as Sandeep's girlfriend gets as much voice as the hero's parents.

However, the film is not without flaws. Perhaps the pace in the first half could have been steadier. Also, the director took his own time to establish the characters.

It has been many years since the Mumbai Attacks took place. Major is the first attempt to tell a biographical story of that incident. This is not about the terrorists, their ideology, their hatred. This is about Sandeep, his parents, his patriotism, and his poignant moments. The film is also about the daredevil action in the middle of a spine-chilling terror attack.

On the whole, Major movie is a fitting tribute to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan - it’s a classic film version of a story that deserves to be told!

Major Review: A Soaring Tribute To Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Who Comes Off As More Myth Than Man

Perhaps the Indian Army would be well advised to keep recruitment booths outside theaters screening Major, such is the force of its conviction, its rousing, aspirational, thumping celebration of the soldier's sacrifice, of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's sacrifice, an army officer who was killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. It is a bulls-eye precise movie, cranking up emotions when the action tires and injecting a spray of bullets when emotions cloy. Adivi Sesh who wrote the film, also takes up this rose-tinted role — of a charming man with a charmed family (Revathi, Prakash Raj), who, in death, assumes the shape of a mythical beast, the glittering North of the collective Indian moral compass. And therein lies my hesitation, too.

It is certainly worrying that sometimes in cinema, we are not willing to distinguish a biography from a hagiography. Something about the tone of these films, the pitch of its love for its protagonist, the inability to frame their frailties as frailties but as funks, makes it feel like an obituary clogged with superlative adjectives, and like obituaries which don't age well, written in the blinding haze of adulation and mourning, such movies, too, feel like punctures of hope, bright flares that are prone to being dimmed out just as quickly.

These movies ask, of what use is critically examining a personality who gave so much? Of what use is critically examining an institution — the Army — that gave so much?

Let me be the heathen for a moment and do just that, because what the movie leaves behind, refuses to delve into, says as much about the film than what it chooses to depict. On 26/11, the police control room received their first call at 9:48 p.m. from Leopold Cafe. By 11:30 p.m. the Maharashtra Government had reached out to the National Security Guard, where Sandeep Unnikrashnan served. To cobble together the 200 odd commandos in the middle of the night required bringing them from their different locations to the base and making sure the commandos and the equipment could fly with the weight. It couldn't. By the time the logistics — including the planes — were sorted and the commandos were flown in to begin their operations at the Taj, it was 9 a.m. the following day.

But what to do with a film begins to feel less like a biopic and more of an offering?

This lag — which was heavily criticized due to the bureaucratic disorder, leading to the NSG setting up regional hubs in cities to reduce the reaction time — is only hinted at in the lighting of the film, when we see the nighttime carnage, when we see the daylight when the operations take place, and between the scenes we must assume the delay.

This is not a film that wants to ask how we could have saved more lives, but is content showing the lives saved — Sobhita Dhulipala, in a glam-black dress, representing the moisturized, grief-stricken faces of those the major saved. Frustration is not supposed to be felt towards the system but the enemy. It's a neat format, neither showing nor demanding your doubt. It yearns for a mythic status for its protagonist. Fair enough. Sandeep Unnikrishnan's parents were heavily involved in the making of the film, and which parent would be okay with inviting criticism of their dead child or their intentions?

But what to do with a film begins to feel less like a biopic and more of an offering? Take for instance the primal question of why does Sandeep feel this gushing urge of patriotism for our country. Where do we locate the seed of this pride? It is, according to the movie, the theatrics, the melodrama, the histrionic parade of power that he saw as a child during Navy Day, coupled with the desire to wear a crisp, respectable uniform. He fell under the spell of awe. That is, perhaps reason enough.

And just like the film does not make a distinction between passion and duty, it refuses to differentiate the Major's bravery from his saviour complex. (His last words, in the middle of a gun-fight was, "Don't come up, I'll handle it.") The last pose he strikes in this film is him slumped against a pillar, hand with a gun cocked resting on his folded knee. Even in death, his hand never goes limp. A man might die, but a myth folds itself over and over, reincarnating to a beacon of hope, but also a figure of disbelief. The second half of the film, which takes place entirely inside the Taj, lacks a gritty, immersive cinematic tension. Even as the action scenes fly by in a fog of gunfire, even as the background score tries its best to produce stakes with its rhythmic gunshot sounds, there is no sickening unease or a kind of convulsive tension that Mumbai Diaries 26/11 and The Attacks of 26/11 produced . Almost as though the film wanted to be pleasant to watch even as it showed one of the most unpleasant hours in the history of this country. The tension it produces is entirely cosmetic. A bug — or perhaps feature — that even Goodachari, the director's previous film had, where its attempts at manufacturing tension in action scenes included vigorously shaking the camera. (Another striking parallel between the two movies includes a Prakash Raj father-figure who is reluctant to have his son, again played by Adivi Sesh, to work for the country.)

The sheer scale of Sandeep Unnikrishnan's life demands not just beauty and bombast, but truth, too. But like an impossible triad, Major chose beauty and bombast.

If you are sensing my reluctance to fall under the spell of the movie even as I am swept away by its emotional logic, you are right. Unlike Shershah where the acting was uniformly, excessively reliant on the easy beauty and perfume-like screen presence of its lead pair, here, the beauty is grounded by passion and a natural charm that cannot be performed, cannot be learned. Adivi and Saiee Manjrekar — even though she turns into a weepy wife in the second half for reasons that are unimportant to the film's larger purpose — and Sobhita's glamorous reaction shots cobble together a film that is as glossy as it is emotionally potent.

Even what feels like a hammered approach to establish his love for his mother (Revathi who weeps and screeches grief like no one else does) — like the shot of him lying on her lap — produces this extremely sharp stab of sadness up the nose when, towards the end, we see a faded image of Sandeep on his mother's lap, a replication of which we saw early on in. Submit. Submit. Submit, the movie yells at you as tears slip down. Here is a Malayali man who spent his growing years in Bangalore, his youth in a cantonment in Hyderabad, guns blazing in Kashmir, working in Haryana, and then, finally, shipped off to Mumbai where his life ended in a blaze of heroism. The sheer scale of his life demands not just beauty and bombast, but truth, too. But like an impossible triad, Major chose beauty and bombast, leaving the question of truth to baffle skeptical reviewers like me, scratching our heads out of the theater, deeply moved by the movie and just as deeply doubtful of its charm.

மகாராஜா விமர்சனம்: அசத்தல் திரைக்கதை, அற்புதமான நடிப்பு, மிரட்டலான மேக்கிங் - ஆனா, பிரச்னை என்னன்னா?

நேர்கோட்டில் படம் சென்றிருந்தால் அடுத்து என்ன என்பதைக் கணிக்கும் சாதாரணமான படமாக இருந்திருக்கும். ஆனால் அதை தன் நான்-லீனியர் பாணியில் படமாக்கிய விதத்தில், திரைக்கதைதான் படத்தின் 'மகாராஜா' என்று அரியணை ஏற்றியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் நித்திலன் சாமிநாதன்.

சென்னை கே.கே.நகர் பகுதியில் சலூன் கடை வைத்திருக்கும் மகாராஜா (விஜய் சேதுபதி) தனது மகள் ஜோதியுடன் (சச்சினா நெமிதாஸ்) பள்ளிக்கரணை பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார். ஒருநாள் காவல் நிலையம் செல்பவர் தன் வீட்டிலிருந்த 'லட்சுமி' திருடு போய்விட்டதாகவும், ஸ்போர்ட்ஸ் கேம்ப்பிற்குச் சென்றிருக்கும் தன்னுடைய மகள் ஜோதி திரும்ப வருவதற்குள் காவல்துறை லட்சுமியைக் கண்டறிந்து தரவேண்டும் எனவும் வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கிறார். மகாராஜாவுக்குக் காவல் அதிகாரிகள் உதவினார்களா, உண்மையில் மகாராஜாவின் வீட்டில் நடந்தது என்ன, அவருக்கும் வீடு புகுந்து கொள்ளை அடிக்கும் ஒரு கும்பலுக்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு என்பதே இந்தப் படத்தின் கதை.

சிரிக்காத இறுக்கமான முகம், மகளுக்காக எதையும் செல்ய்யும் தந்தை, லட்சுமியின் கதையை விவரிக்கும் போது வெள்ளந்தி மனம் எனப் படத்தின் மொத்த பாரத்தையும் சுமந்திருக்கிறார் விஜய் சேதுபதி. அதிலும் தடுமாற்றத்துடனும் தளர்வான நடையுடனும் வாள் வீசும் தருணம், க்ளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியில் எதிரியைப் பார்க்கின்ற தருணம் எனத் தனது அரைசத படத்தில் நடிப்பில் சதமடித்திருக்கிறார். குழந்தை நட்சத்திரமாக சச்சினா நெமிதாஸ் குறைவான திரை நேரமென்றாலும் உணர்வுபூர்வமான இடங்களில் நடிப்பிலும் வசன உச்சரிப்பிலும் ஜொலித்திருக்கிறார்.

திருடுகிற வீட்டிலேயே சமைத்துச் சாப்பிடுவது, கூட்டாளிகளின் பாலியல் ரீதியான குற்றங்களைக் கண்டுகொள்ளாதது என்று ஒருபக்கம் கொடூர வில்லனாக மிரட்டும் அனுராக் காஷ்யப், மறுபுறம் எலக்ட்ரிக்கல் கடையில் வேலை பார்த்துக் கொண்டே தனது குழந்தைக்காக எதையும் செய்யும் தந்தையாகவும் இருக்கிறார். அவருக்கான டப்பிங்கில் மட்டும் கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்கலாம். இன்ஸ்பெக்டராக வரும் நட்டி இது சரி, இது தவறு என்று யூகிக்கமுடியாத கதாபாத்திரத்தை அருமையாகக் கையாண்டிருக்கிறார்.

'பாய்ஸ்' மணிகண்டனுக்கு இரண்டாவது இன்னிங்ஸில் புதிய பரிமாணம் என்றாலும் பெரிதாக வேலையில்லை. இவர்கள் தவிரச் சிங்கம் புலி, அருள்தாஸ், முனிஸ்காந்த் ஆகியோர் தங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வேலையைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். அபிராமி தன் கணவன் குறித்து உண்மையை அறியும் காட்சியில் உணர்ச்சிகளை அட்டகாசமாகக் கடத்தியிருக்கிறார். மம்தா மோகன்தாஸ், பாரதிராஜாவுக்குப் பெரிதாக வேலையில்லை.

'அடுத்து என்ன?' என்ற வினாவோடு நகரும் திரைக்கதையின் வேகத்துக்கு வலு சேர்த்திருக்கிறது பி.அஜனீஷ் லோக்நாத்தின் பின்னணி இசை. வைரமுத்துவின் வரிகளில் ஒரே ஒரு பாடல் படத்தில் ஆங்காங்கே வந்தாலும் கதையைத் தொந்தரவு செய்யவில்லை. ஸ்டன்ட் மாஸ்டர் அனல் அரசு இடைவேளைக்கு முந்தைய இடத்தில் மிரட்டலான சண்டைக் காட்சியை வடிவமைத்திருக்கிறார். அது ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் தினேஷ் புருஷோத்தமனின் கச்சிதமான ஒளியுணர்வோடு சேர்ந்து மேஜிக் செய்திருக்கிறது. அவரது அழுத்தமான ப்ரேம்களுக்கு, நேர்த்தியாகச் சவரக் கத்தியால் கச்சிதமாக வெட்டு போட்டிருக்கிறார் படத்தொகுப்பாளர் பிலோமின் ராஜ்.

`பாட்டுக்குப் பாட்டு’ விளையாட்டுடன் வேடிக்கையாகத் தொடங்கும் படம், அதற்குப் பின்னர் திடீர் விபத்து என்று அதிர்ச்சியைத் தந்து நிகழ்காலத்தில் நுழைகிறது. அங்கே `லட்சுமியைக் காணோம்' என கேஸ் கொடுக்க வரும் நாயகன், கதை சொல்லும் விதமும், அதற்கு போலீசார் ஆற்றும் எதிர்வினையும் டார்க் ஹ்யூமர்! இருப்பினும் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் அதையே நீட்டிக்கச் செய்திருப்பது கொஞ்சம் ஓவர் டோஸ்!

எளிமையான நேர்கோட்டில் படம் சென்றிருந்தால் அடுத்து என்ன என்பதைக் கணிக்கும் சாதாரணமான படமாக இருந்திருக்கும். ஆனால் அதை தன் நான்-லீனியர் பாணியில் படமாக்கிய விதத்தில், திரைக்கதைதான் படத்தின் 'மகாராஜா' என்று அரியணை ஏற்றியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் நித்திலன் சாமிநாதன். இடைவேளையில் சூடுபிடிக்கும் படத்தின் வேகம், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் பதைபதைப்புடன் சீட்டின் நுனியில் உட்கார வைத்திருக்கிறது. இப்படிப்பட்ட திரைக்கதை என்று முடிவு செய்து, அதற்கேற்றவாறு காட்சிகளைப் புதிர்களாக அடுக்கிய விதத்துக்காகவே அப்ளாஸ்!

அதே சமயம் பெண்களுக்கு/குழந்தைகளுக்கு எதிரான பாலியல் வன்முறை காட்சிகளை இன்னுமே முதிர்ச்சியுடன் அணுகியிருக்கலாம். பாலியல் ரீதியான குற்றம், பெண்களுக்கு எதிரான வன்முறை போன்ற சென்சிட்டிவான விஷயங்களை, வில்லன் எவ்வளவு கொடூரமானவன் என்பதைக் காட்ட ஒரு கருவியாகப் பயன்படுத்திய விதம் கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது. பழிக்குப் பழி வாங்குவதை நியாயப்படுத்தி, எமோஷனலாக ஸ்கோர் செய்ய இத்தனை வெளிப்படையான மோசமான காட்சிகளும், வசனங்களும் அவசியம்தானா? குற்றம் இதுதான், அதைச் செய்தவர்கள் கொடூரமானவர்கள்தான் என்பது புரிந்துகொள்ளப்பட்ட பிறகும் வசனங்களால் அதை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் விவரிப்பதும் ஆபாசமே! 'ஊழ்வினை உறுத்து வந்து ஊட்டும்' என்பதைப் பாலியல் குற்றத்துக்கும் பொருத்திப் பார்த்திருப்பது நெருடலே!

திரைக்கதையாகவும், அதை ஓர் இருக்கை நுனி படைப்பாக உருவாக்கிய விதத்துக்காகவும் ‘மகாராஜா’வாகக் கொண்டாடப்பட வேண்டிய இந்த படம், சொல்ல வந்த கருத்தை அணுகிய விதத்துக்காகச் சில பல கண்டிப்புகளையும் சேர்த்தே சம்பாதித்துக் கொள்கிறது.

தங்கலான் Review: பா.ரஞ்சித் - விக்ரமின் ‘வரலாற்றுப் புனைவு’ தரும் தாக்கம் என்ன?

‘நட்சத்திரம் நகர்கிறது’ படத்துக்குப் பிறகு பா.ரஞ்சித்தும், ‘பொன்னியின் செல்வன்’ படத்துக்குப் பிறகு விக்ரமும் இணைந்துள்ள படம் ‘தங்கலான்’. இரண்டு பேருக்குமே ஒரு பேர் சொல்லும் வெற்றி அவசியமாக இருந்த நிலையில், விக்ரமின் கெட்டப், ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷின் பாடல்கள், விறுவிறுப்பான ட்ரெய்லர் என இப்படத்துக்கான எதிர்பார்ப்பு ஏகத்துக்கும் எகிறியிருந்தது. நீண்ட நாட்களாக இறுதிகட்ட பணிகளில் இருந்த ‘தங்கலான்’ ஒருவழியாக திரையரங்குகளில் வெளியாகியுள்ளது.

கதை 19-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் தொடங்குகிறது. வட ஆற்காட்டில் பண்டைய அரசர்கள் பிடுங்கிக் கொண்ட நிலங்களில் இருந்து எஞ்சிய இடத்தில் விவசாயம் செய்து வரும் ஒரு சிறிய பூர்வக்குடி இனக்குழுவின் தலைவன் தங்கலான் (விக்ரன்). மனைவி கங்கம்மாள் (பார்வதி), குழந்தைகள் என வாழ்ந்து வரும் தங்கலான், பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பாக இப்போதைய கோலார் பகுதியில் தன்னுடைய மூதாதையர்கள் தங்கம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததையும், சிற்றரசன் ஒருவனின் பேராசையால் அவர்கள் தூண்டப்பட்டு, அப்பகுதியின் காவல் தேவதையாக விளங்கும் ஆரத்தி (மாளவிகா மோகனன்) என்ற பெண்ணால் தடுக்கப்பட்டதையும் கதையாக தன் குழந்தைகளுக்கு சொல்கிறார்.

இன்னொருபுறம் ஜமீன்தார் ஒருவரால் எஞ்சியிருக்கும் நிலமும் அபகரிக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில், தங்கலானின் குழுவினருக்கு உதவ முன்வருகிறார் க்ளெமென்ட் என்ற வெள்ளைக்காரர். பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு தங்கலானின் மூதாதையர்கள் எடுத்த அதே பகுதியில் தனக்கு தங்கத்தை எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தால், அதில் பங்கு தருவதாக உறுதியளிக்கிறார். இதற்கு ஒப்புக் கொள்ளும் தன்னுடைய கூட்டத்தில் இருந்த சிலரை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு அந்த வெள்ளைக்காரர்களுடன் புறப்படுகிறார். செல்லும் வழியில் அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் இடையூறுகள் என்னென்ன? அவர்களுக்கு தங்கம் கிடைத்ததா என்பதே படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

தலித் பூர்வக்குடி மக்களின் ரத்தத்திலும் வியர்வையிலும் உருவான கோலார் தங்க வயலின் மறைக்கப்பட்ட வரலாற்றை தொன்மக் கதைகள் வழியே கற்பனை கலந்த ஒரு ஃபேன்டசி படைப்பாக கொடுத்துள்ளார் பா.ரஞ்சித். சாதிய ஒடுக்குமுறையையும், நில அரசியலையும் ரஞ்சித்தின் முந்தைய படங்களை விட ‘தங்கலான்’ ஒருபடி மேலே சென்று மிக அழுத்தமாகவே பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறது.

வரலாற்றின் பக்கங்களில் இருந்து பவுத்தம் மெல்ல அழிக்கப்பட்டது, அரசர்களுக்கு பின்னால் வந்த ஜமீன்தார்கள் நிலங்களை வஞ்சித்து பிடுங்கியது, தாய் வழிச் சமூகங்கள் பற்றிய குறியீடுகள் கதையின் ஓர் அங்கமாய் தங்கலானின் பயணத்தினூடே வழிநெடுக வந்துகொண்டிருக்கின்றன. முதல் பாதி முழுவதும் ரஞ்சித்தின் நேர்த்தியான திரை மொழி வெளிப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறது,

Vaazhai Movie Review: Mari Selvaraj's most tender and deeply affecting tale yet

Sometimes you look forward to watching a film and then when it finally arrives, you are left with little to no emotions to speak about it. And then when the climax unfolds, you just want to quickly pick up every visual and thought, and hold it together in memory for as long as possible. Director Mari Selvaraj, who has a knack for arresting his audience with deeply personal and affecting stories, has pulled out a page from his life with Vaazhai , a film so tender that it tugs at your heartstrings and then uproots it all at once. Within the first fifteen minutes of Vaazhai , Mari Selvaraj sets the stage for how his story will pan out. An old man in Puliyankulam village dies and the whole area gathers for his funeral. Sivanaindhan (Ponvel) is woken up by his sister Vembu (Dhivya Duraisamy) that morning. When he protests, she tells him that they don’t have to carry banana stalks since they have a funeral to attend. Later, Sivanaindhan innocently tells his friend, “ Naalikum yaarachu setha nalla irukum (It would be nice if someone dies tomorrow as well).”

Of course, Sivanaindhan doesn’t understand the gravity of his words, nor does he feel the weight of it. And the film too traverses along with his innocence as he and his closest pal Sekar (Raghul) move through each day in school figuring out if actor Rajinikanth is the bigger star or Kamal Haasan is. When they are not engaged in fan wars, they are gushing over their teacher Poongodi (Nikhila Vimal). If it was Jo (Anandhi) in Pariyerum Perumal who was Pari’s angel, Poongodi is Sivanaindhan’s angel, his respite when things go awry. She can teach him dance moves, sew his shirt and even offer him her handkerchief as a memory. Sadly, that’s all she could do as an elite who remains distant as ever to the oppressed and their dreams. The theatre erupted in laughter every time Sivanaindhan and Sekar’s mischievous acts played out on screen. Their chalk-and-cheese love story is a delight to watch. But all those moments die down when the director paints a no-holds-barred reality of the workers. It is gruelling and every little joy is sucked out of their lives before they could earn a penny, but perhaps the best line that summarises their agony is when a villager points out to the buyer that he has been working in the same field since the latter’s father was a buyer. The filmmaker doesn’t stop there. Kani (an aptly-cast Kalaiyarasan) stands as a leader and a rebel with a cause who believes in the dignity of labour. Sivanaindhan’s mother (Janaki) fights for her family’s respect to be protected at all costs. And when the film gets too heavy, Sivanaindhan brings in marudaani plants (henna) as a truce and to forge love. I grinned from ear to ear when Kani and Vembu wore marudaani on their hands and lovingly showed it to each other.

While several of these ideas piece the puzzle quite well, the characters could have stayed with us for a bit longer. For example, we know little about Vembu other than as a doting sister and a coy lover. Similarly, we would have loved to see more about Sivanaindhan’s mother's communist values and Kani’s story behind his rebellious self. Mari and cinematographer Theni Eswar present these ideas in a visual grammar that is both visceral and evocative. Among these images are that of Sivanaindhan just running several miles on foot, chased by the trauma that he has endured, the agony that the ghosts of his past have left for him and the scars that he has to carry forward for the rest of his life. The banana plant is renowned for its all-round utility, from stem to leaf. Yet, when one plant dies after fruiting, its offshoots continue to grow—a symbol of prosperity. Vaazhai beautifully captures the inherent irony of how the underprivileged are doomed to be exploited and traumatised even at the hands of a symbol of prosperity.

Dinner and a movie? Chick-fil-A apparently wants to be your one-stop shop. On Aug. 21, Deadline reported that the fast-food chain, known for its chicken sandwiches and Banana Pudding Milkshakes, is launching its own streaming platform along with a slate of original programming. Chick-fil-A has been reportedly working with “a number of major production companies” to create “family-friendly” shows, many of which will be reality TV, and is also in talks to license and acquire content. When it comes to the big screen, there’s only one Wolverine and his name is Hugh Jackman. After Dougray Scott stuck shooting Mission: Impossible II for longer than anticipated and had to drop out of playing Logan in 2000’s X-Men, Jackman has owned the part. Not even a noble and beloved death in Logan can put a stop to Jackman’s reign as cinema’s premiere Canucklehead, as he dons the goofy mask and yellow duds in full for Deadpool & Wolverine.

But while Deadpool & Wolverine does further delay the inevitable recasting of Logan for the MCU, it also gives viewers a look at different types of Wolverine. Sure, these are all still Hugh Jackman—save, of course, for the one played by Henry Cavill—but at least there’s some more flavor. With that flavor, however, comes some questions, as these variations all come from deep comic book lore. So for anyone who wants to know as much about the alternative Wolverines as Deadpool knows, read on!

Wolvie-Verse Variants Explained!

The most obvious of the bunch is an old codger who Deadpool finds sitting on the porch. With his ragged poncho, brown hat, and weathered face, this Wolverine resembles Clint Eastwood more than he does the yellow-and-blue clad mutant we know and love. That’s because this is the original Old Man Logan. Where the film adaptation Logan just aged up Jackman a bit, the comics by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven drew inspiration from later Eastwood Westerns such as Unforgiven and Pale Rider, represented by the cowboy look in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Another Wolverine appears against a graffiti-covered wall, decked in a black suit with red highlights. Most notably, this version has only one hand, with a metal stub at the end of the other arm. Technically, that’s not Wolverine at all—he’s Weapon X, the identity that Logan adopts in the Age of Apocalypse universe. Introduced in a Marvel Comics crossover from 1995, the Age of Apocalypse came about when Charles Xavier’s son Legion accidentally Deadpool & Wolverines his father before the formation of the X-Men, creating an alternate reality ruled by Apocalypse.

A differnt Wolvie appears in a fancy white suit with a patch over his eye, playing cards with other figures of ill-repute. By design he looks a bit like Adolfo Celi’s Largo in the classic Bond movie Thunderball (1965), but as Deadpool rightly notes, this version of Logan is called “Patch.” In the comics, Patch isn’t from an alternate reality; he’s an alias that Wolverine sometimes takes on when hiding out in Madripoor, a fictional East Asian country that has made one MCU appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

As much as Deadpool boasts his comic knowledge in these sequences, he does get one wrong when he arrives in snowy wilderness to find Wolverine unmasked yet wearing a brown and yellow costume. Deadpool attributes the look to John Byrne, the artist and co-writer who made some of the best X-Men comics, alongside Chris Claremont. But when Deadpool realizes that Logan’s about to throw down with the Hulk, Wolvie pops his claws, showing a reflection of the unjolly Jade Giant across the adamantium. That shot references the cover of 1987’s Incredible Hulk #340, drawn not by Byrne, but by Todd McFarlane.

Speaking of iconic covers, Deadpool arrives in a foggy purple world and finds Wolverine nailed to an X-shaped cross above a pile of skulls. That shot recreates (via ugly digital effects) Marc Silvestri’s cover to Uncanny X-Men #251 from 1989, in which Donald Pierce and the Reavers (the bad guys in Logan) capture Wolverine and put him on that X in the Australian sun.

At this point, a persnickety person might point out that all of these comic book nods feature Hugh Jackman. Jackman is tall, Australian, mostly hairless, and a far cry from the short, hairy, Canadian that is the comic book accurate Wolverine. Well, don’t fear, because that’s just what Deadpool finds when he visits yet another universe!

Deadpool tells this Wolverine about his plight, and for once a new Logan answers in the affirmative, hopping off the stool and ready for action. In doing so, the Wolverine reveals that he’s quite hairy and quite short (looking more like Puck from Alpha Flight than Wolverine’s canonical 5’3”, but still). Like so many shallow people, Deadpool can’t get over the height thing and leaves comics accurate Wolvie behind. His loss. (Why yes, this article i’s written by a very short man. How could you tell?)

As much fun as these deep comic book dives certainly are, it would be nice if we could move on from Jackman’s take and see another actor’s interpretation make it to screen. Because if these cameos prove anything, it’s that there’s a lot more to Wolverine than even an actor as talented as Jackman has explored. Although seeing Cavill show up in a gag at the DC franchise’s expense was a pretty good start…
