Au Pair cover letter

Crafting a compelling au pair cover letter can be a daunting task, especially if you're in the thick of job applications and just realized it's a requirement. Unlike your resume, your cover letter should not merely repeat your experiences; it needs to highlight your most impressive professional achievement and tell the inspiring story behind it. Striking the right balance between formality and authenticity, without falling into clichés or exceeding one concise page, can be challenging. Let's navigate these waters together.

  • Write a au pair cover letter that helps you stand out (and get the job);
  • Understand how to start and end your au pair cover letter with the appropriate greeting;
  • What to include in the body of your au pair cover letter to put your best foot forward;
  • Your most important achievements - how to present them as part of your au pair cover letter.

  • Salutation (or greeting);
  • Introductory paragraph (or your opening statement);
  • Body paragraph (or further proof of your experience);
  • Closing paragraph (with a call to action);
  • Signature (that is optional).

Your au pair cover letter should be single-spaced and have a one-inch margins - this format is automatically set up in our cover letter templates and our cover letter builder .

When submitting your cover letter, always ensure it's in PDF, as this format keeps the information intact (and the quality of your document stays the same).

On one final note - the Applicant Tracker System (ATS or the software that is sometimes used to initially assess your application) won't read your au pair cover letter.

How to address hiring managers in your au pair cover letter greeting

Goodbye, "Dear Sir/Madam" or "To whom it may concern!"

The salutation of your au pair cover letter is how you kick off your professional communication with the hiring managers.

And you want it to start off a bit more personalized and tailored, to catch the recruiters' attention.

Take the time to find out who's recruiting for the role (via LinkedIn or the company page).

If you have previously chatted or emailed the hiring managers, address them on a first or last name basis.

The alternative is a "Dear HR team" or "Dear Hiring Manger", but remember that a "Dear Ms. Simmons" or "Dear Simon," could get you farther ahead than an impersonal greeting.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear Host Family,
  • Dear Sir/Madam,
  • Dear [Last Name] Family,
  • Respected Recruitment Team,
  • Dear [Agency Name] Representative,

How to start your au pair cover letter introduction

The opening paragraph of your au pair cover letter can seem like a real enigma.

Where do you start writing ?

In your au pair cover letter introduction, focus on yourself by stating what:

  • gets you motivated and excited about the role;
  • you like best about the company, from culture to awards.

Write no more than two sentences, which are both authentic and show your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

The middle or body of your au pair cover letter body: a great instrument to tell a story

Now that you've set the right tone with the greeting and introduction of your au pair cover letter, it's time to get down to business .

Hear us out, the body of your au pair cover letter is the best storytelling instrument you have, in your job-hunting arsenal.

Writing the next three to six paragraphs, take the time to reassess the advert to discover job-crucial requirements.

Next, choose one accomplishment that covers those key skills and talents.

Use precisely that achievement to tell an exciting story of how you match the ideal candidate profile.

In the undertones of your story or au pair cover letter body, hint at the difference you'd make and sell your application as the perfect one for the job.

A sincere and original way to end your au pair cover letter

When writing their au pair cover letter, candidates tend to use one of these phrases, "Sincerely yours" or "I look forward to hearing from you".

Both statements show good manners, but your cover letter should end in a more actionable manner .

Write about:

  • how you see yourself growing in the role/organization;
  • the benefits you would bring about (you'd impress even more with tangible metrics);
  • the next steps in the process (provide your availability for interviews).

What to write on your au pair cover letter, when you have zero experience

The best advice for candidates, writing their au pair cover letters with no experience , is this - be honest.

If you have no past professional roles in your portfolio, focus recruiters' attention on your strengths - like your unique, transferrable skill set (gained as a result of your whole life), backed up by one key achievement.

Or, maybe you dream big and have huge motivation to join the company. Use your au pair cover letter to describe your career ambition - that one that keeps you up at night, dreaming about your future.

Finally, always ensure you've answered why employers should hire precisely you and how your skills would benefit their organization.

Key takeaways

Summarizing the most important aspects in writing your au pair cover letter, remember to:

  • Create a personalized au pair cover letter for each role you apply for, that includes the recruiter's name in the salutation;
  • Format your au pair cover letter with single-spacing, one-inch margins, and a modern, yet ATS-friendly font;
  • Always start off your au pair cover letter with two sentences that reflect what is most important about your application;
  • Your au pair cover letter body should feature your biggest accomplishments and the job-relevant skills it has taught you;
  • Instead of opting for the "Sincerely yours" ending, close your au pair cover letter with a nod to the future with what you aim to achieve in this potential role.

In my spare time, I love to play tennis. During the last three summer holidays, I helped at a kids’ summer tennis camp and was assigned to teach the youngest group of children the basics of tennis. In between the short exercise lessons I was responsible for entertaining the children and we had lots of fun playing hide and seek, doing face paintings, colouring ins and many more games.

I also love reading, especially English novels. One of my favorite authors is Ken Follet and I can’t wait to have access to an English Library to browse through all the literature I like!”

How to convince the Host Family that I am the perfect match?

If you have some information about the Host Families receiving your letter, for instance age and gender of the children or the location they live, you should definitely take advantage of this information to personalise your letter. You could for example highlight some childcare experience that you have with children of this age (if you have – never make up a story or experience that you don’t have!). This will show the Host Family that you make the effort to write individual Dear Host Family letters.

On our page about Au Pairs we have a list of questions that you should ask yourself to decide if Au Pairing is something you will enjoy. “Enjoy” means not only for a couple of days or weeks but for months as well. If you respond to some of these questions in this paragraph of your letter about your personal choice of becoming an Au Pair, you would reassure the Host Family that your decision has been taken thoroughly.

If you have experience with children or even better with child care, this is the topic you should focus on next. Additionally, Host Parents like to read about either your experience of living abroad or, if you have never lived abroad, some reassuring sentences about why you think living abroad would be no problem for you. Giving an outlook on how living will be with you like (the easier the better) will be really helpful.

“I would love to become your next Au Pair because I love children and enjoy spending time with them. I am prepared and I am well aware of the fact that being like a big sister for your children comes along with responsibilities for them and it will not always be just play and fun. My calm and patient personality will help me to master more difficult situations for instance when the kids are tired or don’t want to listen to me.

I expect that in the first couple of days I will be exhausted at night because I guess taking care of children the whole time can be tiring. But I am sure that I will adapt to the new tasks and daily routine quickly and become a big help for you.

Living with me is really easy as I am not a demanding person. I do respect that the house is your house and that I have follow your house rules. If something works not quite as it should, I prefer to talk instead of ignoring things.

I have never spent longer time abroad except from holidays but I am used to not seeing either my dad or my mom for one or two weeks so I don’t think I will become particular homesick. And from the UK it is just a short flight home to Germany in case I wanted to visit my family in case you don’t need me on a weekend 🙂

I am really curious to hear all about you and your children. The information I have read so far sounds really interesting. I hope you like my letter and I can’t wait to hear back from you.

Thank you for reading my letter and kind regards, Claudia”

The above is an example of a Dear Host Family letter is one that would we as Host Parents like and we definitely would arrange a Skype call with “Claudia”. If you try to follow the summarized ten easy steps below to write a convincing Dear Host Family letter we are sure that you will get lots of Skype requests and then you can choose, which Host Family you like to get to know better.

10 easy steps to write a successful Dear Host Family letter

Time needed:  1 hour

Introduce yourself briefly without going too much into detail. Include personal facts like: Age, country of origin and current home, who belongs to your household, what you are doing at the moment, your hobbies, your language skills

Think carefully about the question, why do you want to be an Au Pair and explain the reasons

Describe how living with you would look like and include words like: honest, open, respectful, reliable, discrete, affectionate, dedicated, patient, responsible, trustworthy

Which ever information you provide, prove them through examples

If you have ever spent time abroad with or without your family, outline this experience

Put the child care affinity before others! That you love to travel or explore different cultures is nice, but should not be your main motivation (at least you should not write that down if that is your main motivation)

Don’t overdo it with how great your child minding is: You will win more sympathy if you can admit things, like you expect to be exhausted at night in the first few days

Add pictures of yourself – ideally with children or at least animals: Pictures with a big smile!

Avoid using numerous emojis throughout your letter. One here or there is ok though

If you have preferences for the area, you should name it already as you don’t want to waste your time or the Host Family’s time for nothing.

And last but not least: If you know the native language of the Host Family at least a bit and if that is not English, it makes a good impression if you write some parts in their language. If this is not possible, write in English.

Ask someone to proof-read your letter

For every Dear Host Family letter written in English we recommend to ask someone with really good English language skills to proof-read your letter because spelling or grammar mistakes can easily be avoided.

Au Pair Reference Letter

Au Pair Reference Letter 1

Are you looking for a way to give your au pair the best chance of finding their next host family? One way to support them is by providing an au pair reference letter. In this article, we’ll explain what an au pair reference letter is, provide some tips for writing a great one, and offer several examples that you can use as a starting point.

Au Pair Reference Letter: Introduction

Before we dive into the tips and examples, let’s first define what an au pair reference letter is. Simply put, an au pair reference letter is a letter written by a host family on behalf of their au pair. This letter is meant to serve as a recommendation to other host families who may be considering a placement with the same au pair.

Au Pair Reference Letter: Explanation

The purpose of an au pair reference letter is to help the au pair find their next placement. Since most au pairs are international, they often rely on references from previous host families as a way to build trust with potential new families. By providing a reference letter, you’re helping your au pair demonstrate their skills, reliability, and professionalism to other families.

If you’re not sure where to start with your reference letter, don’t worry! There are plenty of examples available online that you can use as a starting point. You can edit these examples as needed to reflect your experience with your own au pair.

Au Pair Reference Letter: Tips

Tip 1: be specific.

When writing your reference letter, try to be as specific as possible about your au pair’s skills and experience. For example, instead of saying “our au pair was great with the kids,” try to give specific examples of how they engaged with your children, such as “our au pair planned daily activities that were both fun and educational for our children.”

Tip 2: Highlight Their Strengths

What makes your au pair stand out from other candidates? Whether it’s their language skills, their cooking abilities, or their positive attitude, make sure to highlight what makes them unique in your reference letter.

Tip 3: Keep it Concise

While it’s important to be specific, you also want to make sure your letter is concise and to the point. Try to keep your letter to one page or less, and avoid repeating information that’s already included in your au pair’s resume or application.

The following is a step by step guide to the application process. While it may seem like alot to do, it does mean we can match you with families that suits your experience, preferences and preferred start dates.

This can take a few weeks so don't worry if you do not receive an interview request immediately. I liked the security and assurance the AIFS Au Pair in Australia programme provides before and throughout my stay in Australia. This meant that I didn’t need to worry about things such as not being safe when I arrived in Australia. I knew if I ever need help or advice I could contact someone that would respond quickly and efficiently, and the training and orientation really made me feel at ease and made my transition extremely easy. • We know that many Au Pairs agonize over the letter to the host family and don't know what they should write. • What are families interested in the most?
  • What photos are good or bad to use
  • What language should the letter be in?
  • What you should avoid in your letter

What Questions Should you Answer in your Letter

Below are some of the most important questions that you should consider talking about in your letter so your host family gets a good picture of who you are

  • Who are you? (name, nickname, age etc.)
  • What are you like/ What is your personality?
  • What is your family like?
  • Tell your host family about your time at school
  • What are your hobbies and interests? What do you like to do in your leisure time?
  • What do you want to do after your Au Pair stay? What are your plans for the future?
  • Why do you want to become an Au Pair? What are your personal motives?
  • Why did you choose that particular country as your future host country?
  • Why should the family host you as their Au Pair?

What Does your Host Family Want to Know?

There are a few things that the host family will specifically look for in your letter. The family is mostly interested in reading about your childcare experience. Tell them about the childcare experience you were had in your home country. Explain how many children you cared for, how old they were, what you did with them and why you liked spending time with them. Be sure to include why you like caring for children and spending time with them so much. Keep in mind that this is also what your host family will look for in your pictures. Include pictures which show yourself together with children in your application.

Host families are usually also interested to know if you are likely to get homesick or not. Tell them in your letter if you already spent a longer period of time abroad and explain a bit about those experiences and how they have prepared you for an experience like this. It's also a good idea to tell the host family about your previous travels abroad. Did you spend a summer vacation abroad or participate in a student exchange program? Tell your host family about it in your letter.

What Photos Should you Use or Avoid

  • Keep your photos as attractive for the host family as possible, meaning that they reflect your personality and that they are appropriate.
  • Think of the type of pictures your host family would want to see, pictures of you dressed modestly and pictures of you watching and caring for children. They are looking to see how you interact with kids and how you present yourself.
  • Don't include any revealing photos and make sure that you are decently dressed on your photos! The host family is also not interested in your party pictures or pictures of your tattoos and piercings. Think of the photos as photos you would send a future employer, because that is what your host family ultimately is.

What Language Should the Letter Be In?

It is best if you write the letter to your host family in the host country's language. Your letter doesn't have to be written in a perfect language. The host family knows that your language skills are not perfect yet and they are aware of the fact that you are not writing in your mother tongue. It is important that you let your host family feel that you put a lot of effort and time in writing your letter.

What you Should Avoid - Don’ts

You want to make your letter to your host family as attractive and appealing as possible. Due to this reason, we recommend that you avoid some 'Don’ts' in your letter.

Avoid focusing on one or two cities only. France has more to offer than just Paris and Germany has a lot more cities that are worth visiting than only Berlin, Hamburg or Munich. By focusing too narrowly on only major cities of your host country, you might miss the perfect host family for you only because they might not be living in your preferred city. Getting along with your host family is worth a lot more than living in the right place. Being more open minded about the location of where you are placed shows maturity and openness, which is what the family is looking for.

Another thing you should avoid is to over emphasize in your letter to your host family that you have a boyfriend or girlfriend (if that holds true for you). Reading too much about your boy/girlfriend might bring the host family to think that you are very likely to get homesick and leave the program early or even be distracted while you are caring for their children.

If you are still younger than 18 at the time of your application, avoid writing sentences like "I am 17 years old”. Rather rephrase it, saying "I am soon going to turn 18" or in other similar ways.

We also recommend that you avoid writing empty phrases. You like spending time with children? Okay, great! But why do you like spending time with them? Instead of only writing that you like to look after children, explain what you like about spending time them and describe your previous experience in childcare and where your passion for childcare comes from and the joy you feel from the experience.

Returning Home – Who Au Pairs Can Ask For Letters of Recommendation

As you near the  end of your au pair program , it’s time to prepare for the next phase of your life. You may be returning to school and/or job hunting. This post will explain who au pairs can ask for letters of recommendation, what to ask for, when au pairs should request them, and what comes next once you receive your references. You may

In both cases, having an updated resume or C.V. and letters of recommendation will be helpful. Upon successful completion of your au pair program, you will receive a completion certificate after returning to your home country, but you should consider requesting reference letters before you depart.

Who Au Pairs can ask for letters of recommendation

Many jobs require that you provide two or three references who can speak to your past performances as an employee. As your employer, your host family is the best place to start. They can speak about your performance in your role as an au pair.

Other responsible adults who can talk about your abilities and attitude might be your professors from your classes, your Local Coordinator, or someone you worked with on a volunteer project while in the U.S. When you decide who you would like to act as a reference, you should always first ask them if they would be willing.

Never list someone as a reference unless they have agreed to act as one. Make sure that anyone you ask to be a reference has had a positive working relationship with you and is willing to help your job search.

What to Request?

Once your reference has agreed, you will also want to give them an idea of the kinds of jobs you are seeking and your career goals. This way, your reference will be better prepared to describe your qualifications. For example, for a child care job or study pathway, your host parents can describe your au pair experience with them.

If your new opportunity requires a certain level of English fluency, your English teacher can explain that. If you are a regular cluster meeting attendee, your Local Coordinator knows your strengths. If you need the letter to say anything specific, such as the dates of your employment or type of experience, be sure to let your reference know to include that information.

To find out more and read some sample Reference Letters visit thebalancecareers.com . You might also consider asking for a recommendation via LinkedIn if you are already a member.

When to Ask?

Now you know who au pairs can ask for letters of recommendation, you should also know it is best to ask for a recommendation letter several weeks in advance to allow your reference enough time to write it. The best recommendation letters usually take longer to write to allow your reference time to list all of your amazing accomplishments.

After You Receive the Letter

Once your reference provides a letter of recommendation, don’t forget to call or send a note of thanks for their time. If your potential employer may need to follow up with your reference, keep them informed. Good luck in your future endeavors!

How to Write a Letter to a Host Family

  • May 28, 2024

writing a host family letter from an au pair

How to write a letter to a Host Family (that helps you find a good match!)

If you’re joining the Au Pair program, you may be wondering how to write a letter to a Host Family. Each Au Pair’s profile includes a “Dear Host Family” letter. This is an opportunity for an  Au Pair  to not only to tell the Host Family their qualifications but also show their personality.

Why Write a Host Family Letter ?

writing a host family letter from an au pair

Here are a few reasons why you should write an introduction letter to host family prospects after joining an au pair program.

It Makes a Good First Impression

Just like any job, it’s important for a new Au Pair to make a good first impression on your potential host families. Writing a host family letter will help create a personal connection and set expectations. It will allow you to introduce your personality, background, and childcare philosophy, helping to ensure a good match. A good letter can also establish trust and open communication from the start.

The host parents you’re hoping to connect with are looking for the right fit just like you are, so you should aim to impress them immediately with the professionalism and clarity of your host family letter and your qualifications for taking care of children .

The host family will connect with your sincerity and look forward to interviewing you for the job of their Au Pair.

It Sets You Apart From Other Applicants

Even though every exchange student aiming to work as an Au Pair should learn how to write a letter to a host family , it doesn’t mean all of them do. In fact, many people looking for work as au pairs won’t write a host family letter at all, which will hurt their prospects.

Do your part to stand out from other applicants by writing a clear, friendly host letter that communicates who you are and what your host family can expect from you.

It Helps Connect You With the Right Host Family

If you get hired as an Au Pair during a year abroad , you’ll be spending a great deal of time with your host family, caring for the children and the home. Therefore, it’s important that you connect with your potential host family just as much as you want them to connect with you.

Describe your interests, your personality, your daily routine, and how you spend your free time in your letter so that you can match with a family that has a similar way of life to you. This way, adjusting to your new role will be much easier, and you’ll have more in common with your host family.

What to Include in Your Host Family Letter Sample

The following is a list of items you should include in your letter:

  • Who you are
  • About your family (brothers and sisters)
  • Hobbies/interests/likes/dislikes
  • Why you want to be an Au Pair
  • Child care experiences and personal stories
  • How you can help your Host Family

What Families Are Looking For in Your Au Pair Letter to Host Family

Families want to get to know you. The “Dear Host Family” letter is often the reason families do or do not interview an Au Pair.

Sara , one of our Host Moms, said her Au Pair’s profile was the reason they matched. “There was something about Damaris’ demeanor in her profile that made me think she could be a good fit.”

Most families will want to interview several times before making a final decision. But your profile and “Dear Host Family” letter play a huge role in the family’s decision.

Think of your “Dear Host Family” letter as a cover letter, and your profile as a resume. Your letter should tell families why you’re the best match for them.

Families Are More Likely to Interview You if You Tell Them:

  • Why you joined the Au Pair program
  • How your unique abilities will help the family
  • What you love most about spending time with kids
  • About your personality and what you hope to gain from the program

“Dear Future Host Family,

My name is Lisa. I’m 20 years old, and I’m pleased to introduce myself to you! I’m so excited to be traveling to Germany and can’t wait to learn more about the country ’s culture and history.

I grew up in a family of four brothers and sisters in a small town . I love to read, draw, and paint, but one of my greatest passions is caring for children . I have many years of babysitting experience and have cared for children of all ages. In fact, this is one of the biggest reasons why I would love to become an Au Pair.

As an Au Pair, some of the skills I offer are attention to detail with house cleaning, patience and gentleness with children, and an ability to assist with basic homework or other life skills. I look forward to bonding with your family over our time together and creating lasting memories!

Sincerely,

As you can see within this host family letter example , Lisa clearly states some information about herself, what she would bring to the family as an Au Pair, and her positive attitude toward getting to know her future host family. This letter expresses to the parents that she is smart, kind, open, and prepared to fulfill the many tasks required of a great Au Pair.
