DISASTER PREPAREDNESS, AWARENESS, AND MANAGEMENT

As I read the module about Disaster preparedness, awareness, and management I learned that it is really important for each individual to be aware or to have an idea about disaster preparedness, awareness, and management to avoid the big effects of disasters. Preparedness is everyone’s job because in terms of disasters, we are responsible to safeguard ourselves and also our family. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Disaster is a extreme disruption of the functioning of a society that causes widespread human, materials, or environmental losses. Events such as earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, by themselves are not considered as disasters. Disasters are only called disaster when they adversely and seriously affect human life, livelihoods and property. Therefore disaster preparedness is really important. And as what I’ve understand those natural phenomenon that cause disaster are called Hazard. Hazard refers to the potential occurrence (such as earthquakes, floods and cyclones) in a specific time period and geographic area of a natural phenomenon that may adversely affect human life, property or activity to the extent of causing a disaster. Preparing for disasters saves countless lives, speeds up people’s recovery and saves money. The IFRC supports National Societies to continually improve their local preparedness and response capacity- ultimately preventing and reducing the impacts of disasters on communities. Preparedness measures include preparedness plan; emergency exercises/training, warning systems, emergency communications systems, evacuations plans and training, resource inventories, emergency personnel/contact lists, mutual aid agreements, and public information/education. The goal of community preparedness is to maximize citizen’s awareness of the importance of proactive planning, and encourage participation in disaster preparedness activities. The disaster risk reduction and management awareness is also important because it helps us identify map local capacities to cope with those hazards.

I realized that having a disaster preparedness plan, awareness, and management really plays a big role in each individual’s life and living before, after, and during disaster. It is also important to have knowledge about disaster preparedness.
