300+ CH Words Speech Therapy {Word Lists for CH Sound}

Welcome! I’m excited to share with my fellow speech therapists and parents a word list of over 300+ ch words for speech therapy that will help strengthen your student’s or child’s ch’ sound.

CH Words Speech Therapy

Below I’ve organized a list of ch words by word positions (initial, medial, final). My hope is to make my fellow speech-language pathologists articulation therapy a little bit easier this year.

Articulation Targets

Here’s a list of ch articulation practice words for you to use in your speech therapy sessions or for at home practice to work on your student’s or child’s speech.

  • For Example: chair, check, cheek, chip, chop, chat, teacher, nachos, touchscreen, crunchy, highchair, stitches, lunch, watch, bunch, pitch, witch, beach

Word Position: CH Words Speech Therapy

Initial position of words.

The initial position of the ch sound is at the beginning of a word. For example, “chalk” or “change”.

Medial Position of Words

Some words have the ch sound in the medial position of a word, such as “crutches”, “ketchup”, and “matches”.

Final Positions of Words

The final positions of words are when the target sound is at the end of a word. For example, “wrench” or “peach”.

Correct Production

Here is how to produce the ch sound also known as the choo choo sound to my students:

  • Teeth & Tongue Tip Placement: Start by bringing your teeth together and then placing the tip of your tongue on the small ridge (also known as the alveolar ridge) right behind your upper front teeth.
  • Air: The ch sound is a voiceless stop consonant sound. The voiceless is made by blowing air through the mouth. This will naturally make the voiceless ch sound. The air is then stopped by the tip of the tongue touching the roof of your mouth.

Age Range – Incorrect Production

According to the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation 2 from 2000, most children have mastered the CH sound by the time they are five years old. (This is a standardized sample from the GFTA-2 with 85% of children able to correctly produce that consonant by that age.)

If you are concerned about your child’s speech errors in producing this sound, it is best to consult with Speech Language Pathologists about receiving speech services for an articulation disorder.

words that start with ch for speech therapy

Phonological Process

A phonological disorder is when a child’s speech makes multiple similar sound errors.

Be sure to consult with a certified Speech Pathologist if your child is experiencing a phonological speech disorder.

CH Words at Word Level

Some ways to practice include having your child or student say each ch word one by one as they go through a list.

Using a dot marker can also be a fun way to practice having your child put a dot under each ch sound.

In addition, I’ve compiled an easy-to-download one page overview of ch sounds below. Simply scroll down to the bottom of this post and download your free copy.

Sentence level: ch words speech therapy.

The next step after working at the word and phrase levels is to work on the ch sound at the sentence level.

For example, you could give your child or student a list of sentences to read aloud while they work on their ch sound.

Another idea would be to give your child or student pictures with their ch sound in them and then have them create a sentence about those pictures.

Below is a list of sentences to use with your child or students.

Correct Production of the CH Sound

The CH sound is a palatal affricate sound. It is voiceless, meaning the vocal folds do not vibrate during production. The tongue assumes a horseshoe-like shape while saying the ch sound. A seal is created and the air pressure builds. In other words, to produce the ch sound, the airstream is first stopped. This does not occur at the alveolar ridge as it would for /t/; instead, it happens a little farther back, closer to where production for the “sh” sound would occur. The tongue tip lowers slowly to let the passage of air pass, and the sides of the tongue slowly lower as well.

McLeod and Crowe published  this article , which reported that nearly all speech sounds are developed by age 6.

Common CH Sound Errors

  • Stopping : stopping is a phonological process in which a stop sound (such as p, b, t, d, k, or g) replaces either a fricative or an affricate (ch, dj). An example might be saying “tear” for “chair”. Read more about the different phonological processes .
  • Deaffrication: deaffrication is a phonological process in which an affricate (such as the ch sound) is replaced by a fricative. An example might be “shop” for “chop”.
  • I have personally seen several students replace “ts” for “ch”. An example would be “bats” for “batch”.

How To Teach the CH Sound in Speech Therapy

There are several techniques that speech therapists can try to elicit the ch sound in speech therapy sessions.

  • Try using minimal pairs . For example, if the student substitutes “t” for “ch”, target words such as “tip” vs “chip” might be practiced.
  • Shape “ch” from the “sh” sound. Instruct the student to make puckered lips.
  • Here is my favorite trick! A great way to elicit the ch sound is to use your hand as a visual to “stop” (fist) and then “explode” (spread fingers out) the air.
  • Try shaping “ch” from “s”. Slide the tongue back, pucker the lips, then attempt the “ch” sound.
  • Provide verbal reminders. “You forgot to stop the air!”
  • Use phrases that contain a final ending t and an initial sh. An example might “what shop”. Hold the t just a bit too long, then explode the “sh”.

CH Words for Speech Therapy

The following ch word lists contain ch in initial, medial, and final word positions. A speech language pathologist can use these ch words during therapy with a student who has an articulation disorder. The lists are provided at the word level. To increase the level of difficulty, your student could practice at the sentence level by creating sentences using the target words. Writing assignments might include creating silly sentences and reading the story aloud while focusing on the ch sound. It is also helpful to note the various spellings for the ch sound (check out the helpful resource “ Speech Sounds and Their Letters “).

Manicure Articulation Activity

Wondering what articulation activity is about to become the “favorite” in your speech room? Here it is . This creative, hands-on resource will allow your student to target speech sounds while simultaneously creating a “manicure” using play dough!

Mind blown? YEP.

It’s super easy. Just pick the target speech sound to target during your speech therapy session, such as the ch sound. Your student will pick the color of play dough. After your student says a target word, smash a bit of play dough onto the “nail”. After all target words have been practiced, the manicure will be complete!

  • Articulation Card Game Companion

Do your students love playing card games? This card game companion is the perfect way to play a motivating color-coded card game while practicing individual sounds in speech therapy. Each color and special symbol pairs with a target articulation word. It’s simple to play the game. Before your student puts down a red card during his turn, he must say the ch articulation word that is listed under the red section. If he draws a yellow card, he must say the ch articulation word that is assigned to that target color. It’s fast, easy, and motivating!

Please note: The Pedi Speechie is in no way associated with the well-known card game, which is trademarked.

Articulation Challenge for Older Students

Are you looking for a way to work on articulation with your older students? This articulation challenge activity is designed with upper elementary and middle school speech therapy students in mind! Each worksheet includes a ready-to-go list of words for articulation practice, a speech sound mouth visual, and a “keyboard” picture so your student can “type” his words. (This resource is not digital, it is meant to be printed out). After your student “types” a target word, he must practice saying it. If you’re working with a small group, make it a challenge to see who can “type” the fastest! This resource includes ch initial, ch medial, and ch final articulation worksheets, as well as a variety of other speech sounds.

CH sound overview page

What age should my kid be able to say the ch sound.

Children typically are able to correctly produce the CH sound around 4 years old.

Is the CH sound a voiceless (unvoiced) sound?

Yes, the CH sound is a voiceless (unvoiced) sound.

Is the CH sound a Palato-alveolar sound?

Yes, the CH sound is a Palato-alveolar sound?

Is the CH sound an affricate sound?

Yes, the CH sound  is an affricate sound?

How do I make the CH sound?

How  to make the “ch” sound:.

  • Pucker your lips like a little kiss.
  • Place and  hold  the tip of your tongue towards the top of the mouth (called the hard palate.  If your child can produce the “t” sound, tell them they want the tip of their tongue to be a little further back than that)
  • Turn  off  your voice ( voice is the rumbling in your vocal folds.  For example, have you rchild/client place their hand on their/your neck during the production of “ch” and “z”, and have them feel the difference between the two.  In the production of “ch”, there should be no rumble or voicing.  While in the production of “z”, there should be a rumbling or voicing.)
  • Release the air trapped behind your tongue forcefully!

Tricks and Tips for producing the “ch” sound:

  • A fun and tasty way to teach the child where to put their tongue for a “ch” production is to put some Nutella, peanut butter, sour candy gel, or any other creamy food they enjoy on the target spot. (rubbing a sucker on the target spot works too)  Once the child has felt the spot a few times, have them try to blow out air while still having the tongue touching the spot.
  • Have the child say the “t” sound super fast over and over again.  After they have said it a few times, tell them to try and pull their tongue backwards.  (I like to use a lasso and cow analogy with the tongue being the cow and using an imaginary rope to pull it back.).
  • Have the child say “t” and then “sh” right after.  “Lets make a sound sandwich!  We are going to say the “t” then the “sh”.  Using pictures to show the combination of “t” + “sh” is helpful as well.
  • Pretend that you and the child are train conductors.  Take turns making your best “ ch oo  ch oo” train sounds.

Words with CH Sound: Examples for Speech Practice

In this blog, we will explore....

  • some common words with the CH sound,
  • how to teach your kids the CH pronunciation, and
  • some practical tips to help them learn quicker.

What is the CH Sound?

The CH sound is a consonant sound found in the English language. To make the sound, put your tongue against the roof of your mouth and release air, making a “ch” or “tch” noise.

Sometimes, people mistake the CH sound for other sounds like SH and TH. To make the correct CH sound, your tongue should touch the roof of your mouth lightly, and you should let out a small amount of air. This will make a clear and distinct “ch” noise.

Practicing the CH sound is an important part of building one’s English language skills. Not only does it make your speech smoother and more natural, but it also ensures that your message is communicated clearly and with confidence.

Common Words with CH sound

Here are some common words with the CH sound that kids can practice at home:

At the beginning: In the middle: At the end:
Cheese Teacher Much
Chair Archer Lunch
Chop Kitchen Beach
Child Marching Rich
Challenge Peachy

Here are some common words with the CH sound listed by their number of letters:

3-letter words: 4-letter words: 5-letter words: 6-letter words: 8-letter words:
Chi Chin Teach Charge Research
Ich Chip Watch Church Approach
Chat Touch Starch Matching

Learning the CH Sound

Teaching kids the proper way to form the CH sound can help them improve their speech skills. Here are some tips to help kids form the CH sound accurately:

1. Ask them to place the tip of their tongue behind their top front teeth. 2. Have them curl the sides of their tongue up toward the roof of their mouth. 3, Make sure that they are exhaling the air out of their mouth and not their nose. 4. Encourage them to practice saying words with the CH sound slowly and deliberately.

While it may feel strange at first, reassure them that with practice, they will be able to achieve the correct pronunciation easily.

Practical Tips

Here are some additional practical tips to help your kid learn the CH sound fast:

  • Start by introducing the sound using simple words such as “chat” or “chip”.
  • Have your child repeat the word back to you and pay attention to their tongue placement.
  • If they are struggling, place your finger on their chin and have them move their tongue up towards their top teeth. This will help them understand where their tongue should be positioned when making the CH sound.
  • Provide positive reinforcement and praise your child for any progress made. This will help build self-confidence in speaking English and motivate them to keep practicing.
  • Repeat words with the CH sound often in conversation and during playtime activities such as reading storybooks together or playing word games like charades. Doing this will help your child recognize how often this sound is used in everyday language.
  • “Chop chop” – this expression means to hurry up or get something done quickly
  • “Checkmate” – this term is used in chess when one player has no more moves left and has been defeated by the other
  • “Cheers” – a friendly way of saying goodbye or thank you

Finally, remember that learning anything new takes time so be patient with your child and provide lots of encouragement along the way.

The CH sound may seem tricky to pronounce at first, but with practice, it will become second nature. It is an important step for your child towards mastering the English language and improving their communication skills.

If your kid struggles with speech, apply for a consultation with one of our Speech-Language Pathologists so that we can help you with your kid’s speech and communication goals.

How to Teach the CH Sounds in Speech Therapy

Most children learn to articulate the /ch/ sound before they reach the age of four, but it’s still normal for them to continue its development through the age of seven. However, if a child is older than seven and is still having challenges pronouncing the /ch/ sound, it’s highly advised to start looking for advice from licensed speech therapists to teach /ch/ sounds. Detecting and addressing this issue sooner will give a better chance of fixing and preventing it from getting worse, making it easy for the child and parents alike.

A child having trouble pronouncing the /ch/ sound is most likely substituting it for another sound. This frequently occurs in young children who are in the process of learning the complete range of speech sounds. The /t/ sound is the most common substitution for the /ch/ sound – the child may pronounce ‘cheese’ as ‘tees.’

You may ask, why is this kind of substituting happens? Here’s the reason why:

The /ch/ sound is a combination of the /t/ and the /sh/ sound. It is produced by positioning the tongue tip behind the upper front teeth while forcing air over the tongue, while also puckering the lips as their corners are drawn together. This is a voiceless affricate consonant – vocal cords do not vibrate when you pronounce the /ch/ sound. The sound it produces travel through the air that comes from the mouth, then is haltered by the tip of the tongue that touches the roof of the mouth behind the teeth before it’s released from the mouth. This process can be a bit challenging for children, hence why substituting happens.

When it comes to teaching and learning the /ch/ sound, a one size fits all approach isn’t going to cut it because each child learn their sounds differently. Don’t worry though, to make it less challenging for parents and speech therapists, we have outlined several ideas that can be used to help children develop the production of the /ch/ sound correctly using Speech Therapy .

How to Teach /ch/ Sounds to Children

Mastering the /ch/ sound is a significant milestone in a child’s speech development. As a speech therapist, parent, or educator, it’s important to bring engaging and effective strategies to facilitate the learning process. Whether you’re dealing with early learners or older children who need a bit more guidance, the following techniques will help you explore practical and fun methods to teach the /ch/ sound in children:

Begin with the sounds or speech elements the child is already capable of doing

More often than not, children find it easy to articulate the ‘t’ sound. This skill provides a solid foundation for advancing their speech abilities. Here’s a strategy you can apply in teaching /ch/ sounds:

  • Have the child pronounce the ‘t’ sound as they normally do.
  • Instruct them to repeat the sound, but with their lips rounded. Observe as the sound starts to evolve. You may want to look in a mirror together to help the child understand what lip rounding looks and feels like.
  • Then, encourage them to alter the sound – either elongating it, intensifying it, or speeding it up, depending on how it sounds with their lips rounded.

This technique builds upon their existing capabilities, gently guiding them towards mastering more complex sound variations.

Practice the /tr/ sound

In cases where older children become frustrated or find the ‘ch’ sound too difficult, you can employ a strategic shift in focus. Let the child know that they’ll pause working on the /ch/ sound and start learning a new one. This method can effectively reduce stress and make the learning process more engaging, often leading to improved success in indirectly mastering the /ch/ sound.

Set aside the /ch/ sound and focus on words beginning with /tr/ such as “tree,” “trampoline,” “treasure,” and “train.”

Additionally, this target is ideal if the child is working on their /r/ sound. Concentrating on /tr/ words can lead to the child naturally picking up ‘sh’, ‘ch’, and ‘r’ sounds as part of their learning journey.

Guide the child where to put their tongue

Teaching the CH sound can also involve guiding the child on proper tongue placement. Instruct them to position the tip of their tongue against the roof of their mouth, right at the bumpy ridge before it slopes down towards the throat. If locating this spot is challenging, consider using a toothbrush for gentle stimulation, or place a small amount of a soft spread of their choice (like Nutella!) there for them to touch with their tongue. Once they understand where to place their tongue, the next step is to teach them air release. Have them hold their tongue firmly in that position and then prompt them to release the air swiftly.

Work on the /ch/ sound in isolation while incorporating visual and tactile cues

Many children are familiar with the /ch/ sound as the “choo choo” sound from trains. To reinforce this, mimic the motion of a train conductor by moving your arm up and down with your hand in a fist while they articulate the sound. Encourage the child to do the same as they pronounce it.

Another engaging way to help them remember the sound is by simulating a sneeze. The exaggerated “aahh-CHOO” can be effective in teaching the /ch/ sound. Demonstrating the sneeze into a tissue or your elbow can also serve as a practical lesson in hygiene, showing your child how to minimize the spread of germs.

Work on the /ch/ sound within syllables

Once it’s established that a child can articulate the CH sound in isolation, the next step is to incorporate it into syllables. This approach in progress is much more manageable because it can be difficult to jump from a single sound to entire words. Doing it in syllables will be much more easier for the child.

For instance, moving from the isolated CH sound to the syllable “choo” is simpler than going directly to a word like “chimpanzee”. Another advantage of syllable practice is that it helps identify which word position (initial, medial, or final) the child is most successful with the /ch/ sound.

To practice in syllables, you should add a vowel after the /ch/ sound for the initial position, before it for the final position, and both before and after for the medial position. It’s important to include both the long and short forms of each vowel.

For instance, initial /ch/ syllables include “cha, che, chi, cho, and chu,” while final /ch/ syllables are “ach, ech, ich, och, and uch,” and medial /ch/ syllables might be “acho, echi, icha, ochu, and uchee.”

Once it’s determined where the child most comfortably produces the /ch/ sound in syllables, focus on practicing the /ch/ sound in that same position within words.

For instance, if a child excels with the /ch/ sound at the start of syllables, start working on words where the /ch/ sound is in the initial position. Alternatively, if they show more proficiency with the /ch/ sound at the end of syllables, then begin with words where the /ch/ sound is in the final position. Starting from their area of strength and building from there can accelerate the child’s progress in mastering the /ch/ sound.

Work on incorporating the /ch/ sound into words

After your child successfully articulates the CH sound in syllables and you’ve determined the target position (initial, medial, or final), they are prepared to practice the CH sound in words. You can look at this table for reference:

chair beach ball beach
chat catcher couch
chase crutches bench
check grandchild stretch
cheese hatching pitch
cheer inches catch
chest ketchup patch
child key chain reach
chick matches march
chin lunchbox touch
cheetah marching speech
checkers touchdown wrench
cherry itching watch
chicken peaches witch
children picture lunch
cheeseburger pitcher stretch
chili teacher match
chocolate statue branch
chop witches ostrich
chapter reaching switch
chalk furniture hatch
cheap high chair ranch
chipmunk temperature coach
choose bleachers
chore

When the child can correctly pronounce at least 16 words, they’re ready to progress to using the sound in sentences and you’re a step further on succeeding on mastering how to teach /ch/ sound.

Work on using the /ch/ sound within sentences

When the child can accurately pronounce words with the CH sound, the next step is to practice incorporating them into sentences. This exercise aids in their ability to use the sound correctly during conversations and gets them accustomed to producing the sound within a sentence’s structure. You can look at the below table for sentences that can be used for exercises in practicing the /ch/ sound within sentences:

Matthew sat down on the chair. The man’s chest was muscular. He is touching her chin.
Will you get me a new piece of chalk? The dog played with his chew toy. The chipmunk rested on a log.
I think the dog will chase the cat. The chicken was by the coop. Will you share your chocolate?
Gracie put a check in the box. She is a sweet child. Their job is to chop down trees.
They did a cheer at the pep rally. Are you coming to the chili cook off? What time is church on Sunday?
Melt the cheese and we can dip chips in it. A cheetah can run as fast as a car. I would like a milkshake with a cherry on top.

Bonus: Group Activity on how to teach /ch/ sounds

If you have a group of children you are working with, gather them all and start a lively Cha Cha Choo Choo  activity! Transform the room into a dance floor and form a conga line. Alternate between becoming a human choo-choo train and a cha-cha dancing group. This activity will not only keep everyone active, but will also provide enjoyable opportunity for the child to practice the /ch/ sound. Evidence shows that when children are engaged in multi-modal activities with sensory input and having fun, they learn faster! You can use these songs from Lalafun Nursery Rhymes and Pororo the Little Penguin .

Conclusion on how to teach /ch/ sounds in Speech Therapy

These steps on how to teach /ch/ sounds in speech therapy require combining engaging and targeted activities to capture all aspects of learning in children. In doing so, parents and speech therapists can mold a comprehensive and effective plan for teaching the /ch/ sound. Apart from these tips, consistent practice, positive reinforcement, and a supportive environment can positively contribute to the success and integration of this essential speech sound.

SH Reading Paragraphs

Successful chef.

Chicago has some of the best chefs in the United States. Sharon was one of those chefs. Sharon was the head chef at "Flash", a very expensive restaurant.

Like many people, she liked to shop, wash her car, and sip lemonade in the shade, but unlike many people, she was an accomplished chef. She had been a chef for over 15 years. Growing up, she loved to cook. She experimented with different combinations of ingredients to see how they would taste.

Many people thought this was childish, but even as a young girl, Sharon made food dishes that astonished her friends and family. Her biggest secret was that she only used fresh ingredients. When it came to quality, Sharon never took shortcuts.

She hand selected every ingredient and paid special attention to how they smelled in the store before she bought them. She was always cautious to avoid discounted ingredients because she knew they wouldn't taste right.

Another one of her secrets was that she had excellent communication and cooperation with her staff. She was only one person, and she needed people who would listen and follow her directions. Sharon loved what she did. She was an amazing chef.

Even though she loved working at "Flash" she wanted to open her own restaurant some day. She looked forward to the day that she would own her own restaurant.

Shane's Audition

It was time for Shane's audition. He was nervous, but this was his shot at becoming famous. He was a talented musician and singer. The audition was his chance to play at a well known nightclub in Los Angeles.

His wish was to produce his own album, but he needed this job to help him make the money to do it. Shane's type of music was unique. His music was a combination of pop and hip-hop music with an Irish twist. He had been born in Ireland and his family moved to the United States when he was very young.

Shane had practiced for many hours for his audition. He had polished and perfected the songs he would play for the nightclub owners.

He stood in front of the owners with his guitar in hand. He began to play. His songs were shaping up nicely and the owners seemed to like it. Everything was going smoothly, when all of a sudden...Crash! A shower of glass flew past him.

A large stage light had fallen and shattered on the stage he was auditioning on. For most people this would have been a huge distraction, but this was Shane's moment to shine. He kept playing and didn't miss a beat.

After finishing his songs, the owners gave him a standing ovation. They loved Shane's songs so much, they thought he planned for the light to crash during his song. Shane assured them that he had not planned it.

The owners offered him the job. "Yes!" Shane said. He started that Saturday and couldn't wait to play at the club.

Finding Shannon

Sherry looked at the map on her dashboard. She was lost. She stopped to ask for directions, but the gas station attendant's directions didn't make sense. She had thought about parking her car and using public transportation, but thought that would be even more confusing.

Sherry had never been to a city with this big of a population. She had grown up in the country. After having a conversation with her friend Shannon, Sherry decided that she wanted to visit a big city. Shannon lived in a big city by the ocean.

Shannon's description about all of the things you can do in a big city sounded like so much fun that Sherry made plans to visit her, but now she couldn't find Shannon's house. She started feeling emotional, but fought back her tears. She showed Shannon's address to a man walking by. The man said he didn't know where that address was.

After two hours of frustration, Sherry wanted to demolish something. She threw her hands up in the air and said, "Can't anyone help me find Shannon's address?"

A woman passing by had compassion on her. She asked Sherry if she would like the map on her phone to find the address. Then she told Sherry she would personally show her how to get to Shannon's house. Sherry was so happy that she didn't know what to say.

She shook the woman's hand and offered to buy her lunch. The woman agreed. Together, they hopped in Sherry's car and drove to Shannon's house to pick her up for lunch.

This list of functional words was professionally selected to be the most useful for a child or adult who has difficulty with producing the "SH" sound.

We encourage you to use this list when practicing at home.

Doing home practice will help your child make much faster progress toward correct production.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are only able to see students/clients 30-60 mins (or less) per week.

This is not enough time  for your child to overcome an articulation disorder with the "Final TS" sound. But with high caseloads...

...it's all SLPs can do.

There's  only so much time  in the day.

Every day that your child goes without practice  it becomes more and more difficult  to correct an "Final TS" error because he/she continues to say it incorrectly.

Donald Trump beat his own record of longest convention acceptance speech. How long was it?

Former president Donald Trump accepted the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election in a record-setting long speech Thursday.

His remarks lasted more than 92 minutes. That is the longest acceptance speech in convention history, NBC News and ABC News reported . The previous record was approximately 74 minutes, also set by Trump in 2016, according to The American Presidency Project .

Though he started his speech with his first retelling of Saturday's assassination attempt , it later turned into rambling with lots of tangents. USA TODAY reporters attending the convention in Milwaukee said the crowd seemed to become less engaged throughout the speech.

In that time, Trump put forth his conservative vision for the country , took jabs at President Joe Biden 's tenure in office and thanked America for the support he received after being shot in the ear.
