Time Word Problems

Telling time helps us to know the hour and the minutes.

Knowing the correct time helps us to know where to be and what we should be doing .

We can tell time with analog clocks. They are usually round and use two arrows, called hands, to show the time.

Digital clocks also tell the time. Digital clocks have numbers on them and are easy to read.

Understanding time can help us to plan ahead.

For example, it is 1:00 and Janet has violin practice in THREE hours. Therefore, Janet has violin practice at 4:00. 4:00 is three hours after  1:00.

Look at the clock below:

Look at the clock. The big hand is on the twelve. This tells us that it is _______ o’clock. To read the hour on the clock, look at the small hand. The time is 2 o’clock . We can also write it like this: 2 : 00

We can think about what time it will be in one hour. The hour that comes after 2 : 00 is 3 : 00. In one hour, it will be 3 : 00.

Let’s take a look at some other time word problems.

Sally looks at the time above. She needs to meet her friend two hours from now. At what time does Sally need to meet her friend?

The first thing we need to do is determine the time that is displayed on the analog clock.

Look at the clock. The big hand is on the six. This tells us that it is half past the hour of _______ or ____: 30. To read the hour on the clock, look at the small hand. Look to see which two numbers it falls between. On this clock, the small hand falls between 9 and 10. It is past 9 : 00, but not yet 10 : 00. The time is nine thirty. 9 : 30

Sally is meeting her friend in 2 hours and it is currently 9 : 30. So, she will meet her friend at 11 : 30 .

What is the time?

It is 1 : 00 . What time will it be in one hour when Michael needs to be at his doctor’s appointment?

It will be 2 : 00. Michael’s doctor’s appointment is at 2 : 00.

Let’s look at another example:

It is 4 : 30 . What time was it two hours ago, when Dena was at the dentist?

It was 2 : 30. Dena was at the dentist at 2 : 30.

It is 7 : 30 . What time was it three hours ago when the family was making dinner? Three hours ago, it was 4 : 30 The family was making dinner at 4 : 30.

It is 12:00 . Lisa’s game starts at 6 : 30. How much time is there until Lisa’s game will start?

There are six and a half hours left until Lisa’s game. Her game starts at 6 : 30, and it is 12 : 00 now.

Let’s practice some more!
