How to Formulate Your Childcare Cover Letter
Always tailor your cover letter to each childcare job description so that the reader knows you’re on the ball. If you’re applying to a daycare center, don’t over-emphasize your ability to find optimal “activity zones” in an individual client’s home.
Tailoring your skills , achievements, and success stories to the job description demonstrates alignment with the role, as well as a strong grasp of the details that make something unique—a critical strength when you’re working in childcare!
Writing a compelling greeting and intro
Children love being recognized and addressed by name, and that feeling of respect and value doesn’t fade with age. That means you’ll need to do some research to find the name of who you’re writing to. No “Dear Sir/Madam” greetings here!
Once you’ve greeted your cover letter recipient by name, snag their attention with a good opener. Connect with the facility or organization’s values and state why they drive you towards the job.
Make sure you add some qualifying traits or skills (ideally based on the job description !) to show that you’re ready for the responsibilities that come with the childcare job role. Don’t give them all away yet, though. Hook the reader to keep their interest!
Don’t write an opener like this one, which is way too informal and demonstrates zero responsibility or qualifying skills:
I’m super cool with kids, they always have fun and act like I’m part of their group. I can totally help out at your daycare and here’s why.
This opener is way better since it establishes a personal connection with the organization alongside a solid background of relevant experience. It hooks the reader with some well-rounded skills, too!
That’s much better!
The transformation of my younger sister’s life through dedicated care and developmental assistance has constantly stirred my passion for supporting children’s growth. As I came across the opportunity to become a childcare assistant at KinderCare Learning Centers, I realized that my instincts, coupled with my skills in arts and crafts, conflict resolution, and behavior management, could be well utilized for uplifting young lives in your esteemed institution.

It’s story time! No, really. Your body paragraphs are your opportunity to share which of your most qualifying experiences and youth-centered abilities have led you to your current point in your career journey.
Make sure you stick with one major point per paragraph for clarity’s sake, and adjust these points to fit the job description . Switch out your tales of helping children improve their grades through creative learning activities and preparing healthy meals, depending on where you’re applying to work.
Remember to include metrics for your impact, too! By what percent or letter grade did you boost academic performance? How good were your personal feedback ratings from families you worked with?
Example of a desirable body paragraph
Closing and signing off your cover letter effectively
It’s time to conclude your cover letter with a powerful reiteration of why you want the job and how you’re qualified for it! Summarize your skills, certifications, or other qualifications in the context of how they align you with this particular childcare role.
And don’t forget to include a call to action! Reconnect with the company through shared values and invite them to contact you for more information. Oh, and always say thank you, just like you’re always reminding the little ones to do!
You can include your thanks in your closer paragraph or use it as your professional signoff. If you choose to use a different signoff, make sure it’s formal and always use your real, full name.
This closer is a great example of how you don’t want to sound: informal, unprepared, under-qualified, and vague.
Whoops . . .
There’s a great set of reasons why I can totally pull off this job, and you definitely won’t want to miss my homemade snack recipe.
Write a closer more like this one, complete with a connection to the company and all the necessary formalities:
Ahhh, there we go!
My passion for nurturing young minds, integrated with diverse experiences, albeit outside of a formal childcare setting, would make me a valuable part of your team at the Montessori Academy of Chicago. I welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can foster exceptional care at your institution. Thank you.
Childcare Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid
- Every child is different! And so is every family or facility: No matter who you’ll be working with, make sure you tailor your cover letter to the individual job ad. This will demonstrate how excellent you are at adapting to individual needs, reading the room, and switching gears on the go. Look for what appear to be highly-prioritized buzzwords or key phrases in the job description, and hearken to them when you can.
- You’ll need to put effort into learning each client and child’s name, so you should also put in the work it takes to find out the name of whom you’re writing your cover letter to! Your goal is to show that you value people’s identities and wellness—a central concept in childcare—and making your reader feel valued will give you a boost here.
- Each of your body paragraphs should focus on a specific point, such as a success story about how you turned vegetable snacks into a fun activity, boosting the percentage of kids with balanced diets. Be specific about why you initiated those changes and include a quantifiable metric for how it helped! A little context goes a long way in terms of clarifying your point for the reader.
Plenty of people still do, especially if they’re still using snail mail, but for the most part, you don’t need to since most initial applications, job screenings, and even some interviews take place online.
Refer to the organization’s site and the original job description here. You’ll get a good idea of the company culture or environment where you’ll be working, and you can reflect their tone in your own writing much more accurately!
No matter how much work experience you have, reel it in to just one page! Anything that spills onto two pages will automatically look less appealing, and you want to demonstrate the same efficiency you’ll display in a childcare setting via concision.
- Writing a Cover Letter for Child Care – With Examples
April 16, 2021
When it comes to writing a cover letter for childcare roles, showing you’ve got what it takes for this special, challenging and rewarding career is vital - you want to showcase your unique skills, experience and personality while demonstrating how you meet the job specifications and/or selection criteria. But how do you actually go about it? We have compiled some tips for writing an interview-winning cover letter for childcare, and provided some childcare cover letter examples to get you on your way to achieving your dream job.
Whether you’re an extremely experienced childcare provider seeking a high-level job, or need to write a cover letter for childcare assistant with no prior experience, this article will help you to work with what you’ve got to your best advantage.
Starting out
Before you sit down to write your cover letter, you need to be thoroughly prepared. Make sure you have an up-to-date resume to accompany your cover letter that will verify its contents and provide details on your past experience, then gather information about the job you’re applying for, and the childcare business. It’s imperative you tailor your cover letter for each position you apply for, as doing the extra research will make your cover letter stand out. Here are some things to research and include in your cover letter:
- The job description and specifications, and prior experience or certificates required
- The name of the hiring manager
- What makes this business special: why do you want to work for that particular company? Check out this article to see what sorts of things make a childcare centre special
- The business values, vision or mission statement
Structure of your Cover Letter
The cover letter is essentially a formal letter written in paragraphs, with an introductory sentence, a body that contains the bulk of important information pertaining to the job and your own experience, and a closing summary that brings home why you’re the best person for the job. Cover letters are usually 1-2 pages long (sometimes jobs will specify how many pages), but bear in mind that hiring managers have limited time to read letters, so keeping it concise and relevant will work in your favour.
Paragraph one
Address your cover letter to the person who will be reading it, introduce yourself and explain why you’re applying for the job.
I am a Child Care Educator seeking the role of Child Care Assistant with the Smith Road Early Learning Centre.
Here is where you add why you are applying to that particular centre, showing that you’ve done your research, value and respect the workplace you’ll be coming into, and why you’re confident you are well suited to working there.
My professional values of child-centred learning, commitment to safe and compassionate care, and evidence-based education are aligned with the vision of Smith Road ELC. As a comprehensive ELC with state-of-the-art facilities and nature-play spaces, Smith Road offers diverse experience across the early childhood continuum in a dynamic and supportive environment.
Paragraph two
In this paragraph, you need to convince the hiring manager that you are best for the job. To do this, use your experience and skills and personality traits to demonstrate how you meet the job description and/or selection criteria. If there is a list of skills, selection criteria or domains that must be addressed, try writing these as headings for this paragraph to ensure you cover everything (delete these headings and make sure your sentences run smoothly once you’ve finished).
For example, if one of the areas to be addressed was ‘demonstrates understanding of child development’, you could write:
Having recently completed Certificate III in Education, I have an extensive understanding of the developing child, which has been enhanced by two 8-week placements in ELC’s where I worked with children from age 0-5 years old.
If you don’t have industry experience, you can still show that you’re suited for the job by demonstrating how your experience is transferrable:
While this is the beginning of my career in childcare, the skills I mastered in my role as Customer Service Representative are directly transferrable: I have excellent communication skills, supported by training in conflict resolution, developed through working directly with a diverse range of clients to find creative solutions to problems.
If you’re writing a cover letter for childcare assistant, and have no prior employment history, utilise your personality and any work experience, or informal work such as babysitting, you have undertaken to demonstrate your suitability for the role.
Paragraph three
This paragraph is for summarising why you’re the best person for the job and inviting further contact. Mention your supporting documents and referees, thank them for reading your letter, and encourage them to contact you for further information.
In summary, I have the knowledge, skills and experience to bring outstanding performance to the role of Child Care Assistant at the Smith Road ELC, where the organisational vision is aligned with my career aspirations. I have attached a resume and three professional referees in support of this letter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your consideration. Kind regards, John Smith
Final cover letter hints and tips
- Write your letter in Times New Roman, 12 pt. and don’t add any fancy graphics or blocks of colour which may scramble the Applicant Tracking System programs
- Sell yourself! Get straight to the point, highlight your key skills, and don’t use deprecatory words such as ‘believe’ or ‘think’
- Be yourself- its cliché, and not necessary to be informal, but do show your unique personality, values and qualities.
- Work health and safety, along with hygiene, is very important in ELCs. Check out this article for best hygiene practice in childcare so you can impress your potential employer with your impeccable hygiene knowledge and skills.
