Master's Student: My one-year program at Newhouse offered me hands on Journalism experience in both my classes and internships. My cohort and I got to pitch stories and have our work published! The program encourages you to go out in the Syracuse community which helped immerse me in all that Syracuse has to offer. I have been able to meet so many amazing people in the stories I’ve covered. The Newhouse alumni are also outstanding, I've been able to speak with so many past students about their Newhouse experiences and current jobs which has been a tremendous help as I wrap up my time at Newhouse. I would definitely recommend using Newhouse's Career Development Center. ... Read 7 reviews

Alum: I have studied my Bachelor’s degree on Digital Animation from 2018-2022. I wasn’t very clear on how I should’ve structured my classes until 2nd year, I thought it was weird but it was whatever. And this was at the time that COVID hit, so I also had to take online classes and whatnot. My overall experience was good! I loved the friends and connections I have made over there, being inspired by other student’s art and being able to understand everything well, especially for the 3D classes. The professors were nice, and some even have experience being freelancers. One thing that I will say it was bad is that they don’t teach puppet/flash animation, which is kind of standard in cartoons nowadays. And that it runs on trimesters and not semesters, there’s so much someone can learn in 5 months instead of 3. But I still enjoyed my time there, and I hope I can come back to study Graphic Design! ... Read 7 reviews

What is a photography postgraduate degree?

Photography is a visual art that has the potential to be both thoughtful and playful. Images are static or moving, in film or digital form, and for many purposes such as lifestyle or documentary.

Study it at postgraduate level, and you’ll elevate your industry knowledge as well as your practical and creative skills. You’ll understand how your practice sits within different professional contexts, such as:

  • Advertising
  • Digital media
  • Marketing

Most students come from an art and humanities undergraduate degree. Many others are professionals looking to complement their careers with a stronger theoretical, creative and critical understanding.

Whether for professional or personal purposes, you’ll be given lots of support in producing photography and building career-ready skills. You’ll develop a strong artistic practice as well as a portfolio of work that you can publish and exhibit.

Benefits include:

  • Workshops and practical activities
  • Guest lectures from photography experts
  • Networking opportunities and portfolio reviews with publishers, buyers, agents and curators
  • Access to modern facilities, equipment and software, like darkrooms, Adobe Creative Suite and the latest camera kit

You’ll develop transferable skills along with practical ones, such as:

  • Ability to take criticism
  • Creative problem solving
  • Collaboration
  • Observation
  • Presentation
  • Project management

Courses are often accredited by bodies like the Association of Photographers, which offer professional development and networking opportunities.

If you choose a research option, you can explore the field of photography through original research. This could inform your own creative practice or contribute to the wider field of photography.

Qualification options include masters, doctorates, certificates and diplomas in photography. Each will have a slightly different focus and style of teaching.

Masters in photography

The most common photography masters is a Master of Arts (MA). It's a practical course taught by academics and professional photographers. It lets you explore the art form and deepen your understanding of the discipline.

Research in photography

Research and doctorate degrees are usually Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). They give you the time and space to explore the subject through in-depth research. As it’s a creative subject, you could publish a large collection of work as part of your project.

Certificates and diplomas in photography

Postgraduate certificates (PGCert) and postgraduate diplomas (PGDip) are shorter than master’s courses. They are usually completed by working professionals who want to develop their skills without committing to a full MA.

READ MORE What are postgraduate degrees

This subject can lead to several different careers in areas like education, research, marketing, advertising, publishing and design. Many graduates go into arts-related roles such as:

  • Exhibition curators
  • Photographers
  • Teachers and lecturers
  • Videographers

Several students choose to continue their studies to earn a PHD and work in research.

What are the photography master’s degree requirements?

To qualify for a master’s course, you’ll usually need:

MA – bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with second-class honours in photography or an art-related subject, or satisfactory professional experience

You'll probably also need to show an extensive portfolio with examples of your photographic abilities.

For other postgraduate courses, you’ll usually need:

  • PGCert/PGDip – same as for a masters
  • MPhil/PHD – same as for a masters along with a relevant master’s degree (or equivalent). You may need to submit a research proposal

  • Documentary photography
  • Exploratory practice
  • Innovation and development
  • Interrogating practice
  • Landscape photography
  • Photojournalism
  • Photography and ecology
  • Research and context
  • Resolution and presentation

Taught courses (MA/PGCert/PGDip) usually use teaching methods like lectures, seminars, presentations, gallery visits, tutorials, workshops and studio-based sessions. You could be assessed on your portfolio, coursework, essays, project reviews, presentations, reports and reflective diaries.

If you choose a research degree (MPhil/PhD), you’ll be guided by a supervisor but receive less support than on a taught course. You could be assessed on a large piece of creative work, an independent research project and an oral exam.

Full-time courses usually last:

  • MPhil – one to two years
  • PhD – three to four years
  • PGCert – around 15 weeks or one term
  • PGDip – around 30 weeks or two terms

2024 class photo of the Arizona graduating class taken at the Phoenix Art Museum

May 23, 2024

By Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science staff

Over the past week, Mayo Clinic celebrated the achievements of new physicians and scientists at graduation ceremonies in Florida, Arizona and Minnesota.

Students from   Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science   celebrated their academic achievements this past week at commencement ceremonies in Florida, Arizona, and Minnesota. Graduates will take their next steps as residents and researchers at Mayo Clinic and across the country, pioneering discoveries, easing the physician shortage, and becoming healthcare leaders.

Fredric Meyer, M.D. , Waugh Executive Dean of Education for Mayo Clinic, shared remarks on the importance of education and the accomplishments of graduates at each ceremony.

"Today, we celebrate the future of healthcare," Dr. Meyer said. "As you graduate and go out into the world, you have the responsibility to care for patients and carry forth Mayo Clinic values, to advance the betterment of society, instilled throughout your training. My advice is to do good — make the world a little better."

Leigh Griffiths, Ph.D. , dean of   Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences , encouraged graduates to pursue their dreams.

"Following my passion has led me halfway across the world to work at an amazing institution with incredible people," Dr. Griffiths said. "I am confident that if you follow your passion, your journey will be just as rewarding."

Florida ceremony

Thirteen students graduated from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and five students graduated from Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Florida on Saturday, May 18.

This marked the first commencement ceremony for students in the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Florida, where students earned their Ph.D. degrees. Medical school graduates earned their M.D. degrees as part of an innovative program that allows students to complete their first two years of classroom study in Arizona or Minnesota and then finish the final two years of clinical study in Florida.

Jannifer Lee, Ph.D.,   was the first Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences student commencement speaker in Florida. Dr. Lee spoke about what it means to be a Ph.D. student at Mayo Clinic and said many people don't understand all that goes into a graduate's education.

In the routine grind, it's so easy to lose sight of our unique role as doctorates-in-training at Mayo Clinic. We had the privilege of working alongside the world's leading scientists and doctors, pioneering discoveries that can directly impact patients' lives. What an important position to be in.

The Future is Now: Graduates Awarded M.D., Master’s, Ph.D. Degrees at Mayo Clinic Commencement

Yeonsoo Sara Lee, M.D., gave the student remarks for Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and expressed her gratitude for her classmates' support.

"I think it's safe to say that we were all there for each other during some of our most challenging moments in medical school, both inside and outside of the hospital," said Dr. Lee. "That element of community is something that we all have benefitted from — from not only taking care of patients as part of a team but also supporting and celebrating each other."

Arizona ceremony

Forty-seven medical students graduated from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Arizona, on Monday, May 20.

Jewel Kling, M.D. , the vice dean of Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and Suzanne Hanson Poole Dean of Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Arizona, commended students on their unwavering commitment to excellence and thanked those who supported students in their academic journeys.

"Behind every successful graduate stands a village of support," said Dr. Kling. "To the families and loved ones who have stood by your side throughout this journey, offering encouragement, love, and understanding, we owe a debt of gratitude."

Christopher Allen, M.D., was the student commencement speaker and, as a graduate and soon-to-be physician, spoke about where graduates came from and what the future has in store.

It began when we decided to follow that calling to serve we all innately share. Some always knew they would be doctors. Others discovered their calling after a first career. Some of us are living the immigrant family dream, and all of us are here because of the sacrifices made by the generations before.

Minnesota ceremony

In a combined ceremony in Rochester, 44 new physicians and 40 new biomedical scientists received doctoral degrees. In addition, 36 students received master's degrees.

Jeffrey Woods, M.D., was the student speaker from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He reflected on how the unique circumstances of this medical school class shaped their experience.

"Despite many challenges, we are a class of truly outstanding medical school graduates and physicians," said Dr. Woods. "I invite you to take a moment now to call to mind, yes, the joys and triumphs of the last several years, but also any incompleteness around experiences missed. The power of a rite of passage like today is it can help transform us."

Danielle Beetler, Ph.D., the student speaker from Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, urged graduates to celebrate the moment.

"We represent so many different journeys to get to this moment, a host of individual experiences," said Dr. Beetler. "I challenge all of my peers to say 'thank you' again today to as many people as you can remember that have been a part of this journey for you. This achievement is not your own, but one to share with all of them."

NJIT's 2024 Master's and Doctoral Class Make Their Mark

phd degree photo

New Jersey Institute of Technology served up a full day of fanfare as its advanced degree graduates walked across the stage in the Wellness and Events Center in three commencement ceremonies on May 15. The 2024 class comprises more than 1,400 graduates and reflects the institution’s steady growth and upward trajectory.

NJIT Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs John Pelesko, participating in his first commencement exercises as provost, called the ceremonies to order. Pelesko, himself a 1997 alumnus of NJIT as the very first Ph.D. graduate in mathematical sciences, implored students to soak in this moment as they will look back on it for many years to come.

NJIT President Teik C. Lim encouraged graduates to seize opportunities and make a positive impact as leaders, building on the progress made by NJIT graduates before them.

"Embrace the opportunities that await and use your talents to pursue goals that will benefit others and improve our world. Understand that you are building upon a foundation that was created by previous generations of Highlanders, and you are contributing to the great legacy of our university in your own way. … graduates of the class of 2024, congratulations!”

Master’s Ceremony for NCE, HCAD, CSLA and MTSM

Watch the 9 a.m. commencement ceremony recognizing master’s students from Newark College of Engineering, Hillier College of Architecture and Design, College of Science and Liberal Arts and Martin Tuchman School of Management at the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center

Dean Kevin Belfield of the College of Science and Liberal Arts acknowledged the importance of NJIT’s faculty in the success of the graduates.

“These dedicated professionals have provided invaluable classroom instruction and have contributed to your intellectual growth in labs, in the field, and in the community,” he said. “They have served as teachers, mentors, and role models, guiding you towards academic achievement and preparing you for your future endeavors, whether it be further study, entering the workforce, or pursuing other post-commencement adventures.”

Dean Moshe Kam of NCE presented the ceremony’s keynote speaker Santo Politi ’89, founder and managing partner of Spark Capital. Politi is a distinguished graduate of NJIT, holding a master's degree in electrical engineering.

Commencement2024-9am-9752.jpg

Santo Politi '89 served as keynote speaker for the morning ceremony

Politi shared his journey from Turkey, his birthplace, to the U.S. and how the people he met at NJIT helped him to achieve all his endeavors, whether that was giving him a ride to his job or giving a recommendation to land a job. “This was the best first place I could have gone in this country. Since I got this invitation to talk to you all I've been reflecting on my experiences here,” said Politi. “So knowing what I know now I'm pretty sure I would not be talking to you if NJIT was not my first stop in the U.S.”

He gave the graduates encouragement as they look ahead to the future. “You have become experts in your chosen fields and you have already made significant scientific contributions. If it feels like technology is moving at an unprecedented pace, it is, and it is because of you.

“There's always much to worry about, like the state of the planet, dwindling resources, war and famine. At the same time with the opportunity that is generative AI, it feels like we are all at the cusp of something spectacular,” he said. “An opportunity to make real change in our lifetime, the problems we face from climate change to sustainable energy, demand your ingenuity. The world needs your technical brilliance.”

Gabrielle Esperdy, interim dean of the J. Robert and Barbara Hillier College of Architecture & Design, led the morning presentation of candidates for degrees — first reminding graduates of what it took to reach this moment, and the power of their potential as they venture out into their careers.

"Whatever path brought you here today, you have fulfilled the degree requirements of a rigorous course of study, and that distinguishes you as professionals in your respective fields," she said. "Your NJIT credentials will open new doors. Know that you are limited only by your ambition and passion for the work that you will pursue. You are, and will always be, part of the NJIT family and we welcome you all with open arms.”

NJIT’s Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center was filled with excited friends and family throughout the day

Following the presentation, Dean Oya Tukel of the Martin Tuchman School of Management shifted the spotlight towards the graduates’ friends and family in attendance, dedicating a special moment to honor those who have played pivotal roles in their academic journey.

“This day belongs to our graduates, but I’d like everyone to stand and join me in recognizing those not wearing caps and gowns — the parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, children and friends who have sustained you on your journey,” said Tukel.

President Teik C. Lim took to the podium to offer congratulations before closing the ceremony with the formal conferral of degrees, acknowledging the remarkable achievements of this year’s class and the challenges they overcame along the way.

“Look around and remember this moment. When you walk out of this arena you should feel incredibly proud, because what you have accomplished did not come easily,” said Lim.

Master’s Ceremony for YWCC

Watch the 1:30 p.m. commencement ceremony recognizing master’s students from Ying Wu College of Computing

At the afternoon ceremony for graduate students of NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing, Interim Dean Ali Mili welcomed keynote speaker Samir Saini ’97 (B.S. Civil Engineering), who is a managing director for government clients at Microsoft.

“His deep expertise in technology strategy, operations, project delivery and product management across a broad spectrum of industries makes him an invaluable speaker for graduates entering the tech industry,” Mili stated.

Saini spoke bluntly about the massive role that artificial intelligence will play in the careers of the new alumni.

“You have navigated through arguably the toughest curriculum possible, and completed projects and published research that would baffle probably the best of us,” while working and supporting families. “These achievements are more than just commendable. They are heroic in every sense of the word,” Saini began.

However, “In the next five years or less, we should expect continued advances in AI and of course in generative AI, and in spatial computing just to name a few, that will push the boundaries of what we thought possible and enhance our human potential in ways that really we can only begin to imagine. … We will all live in a world where we will stop thinking about AI as a chatbot that requires constant human input to complete your tasks. Instead, we will use AI as our conscious agents designed to automate complex tasks with little to no human intervention. We will simply explain the task to complete and the goal to achieve and it will leverage all the tools and knowledge and its disposal to get the job done.”

Commencement2024-130pm-9854.jpg

Saini speaks to Ying Wu College of Computing graduates in his keynote address

This revolution, Saini promised, will be “even bigger than the revolution from the command line to the graphical user interface. … Yes, I am confidently saying that Tony Stark’s JARVIS will soon become a reality. And in some ways, we're already starting to see it,” he stated, referring to the popular superhero character’s lifelike assistant.

“This emerging AI revolution comes with some very profound societal risks. How do we combat AI-generated misinformation to safeguard our privacy? How do we ensure AI is fair, AI is transparent and inclusive? It's a daunting thought. And I really hope this never happens — what if we face a scenario where there is an uncontrolled, self-aware AI that emerges? Now, this isn't science fiction anymore. These are the pressing questions that we will need you to address. And you have both the responsibility and the privilege of guiding how we blend AI into our daily lives.”

“So as you move forward in your professional careers, consider the profound impact of your work. Every large language model you train, every algorithm you write, every app you build, every line of code you provide plays a critical role in shaping our shared future. Your work has the potential to eliminate barriers and to position AI as a tool to drive genuine human progress for every single person on the planet.”

Saini’s parting advice is for new alumni to embrace the unknown, keep up with technology, work in diverse sectors, live around the world, learn from failure and prioritize personal life — lessons he personally learned not just in college or on-the-job, but also from his father — himself an NJIT graduate (M.S. Electrical Engineering, ‘75), who is 87, maintains his professional engineer’s license, still consults and even still takes classes to maintain his knowledge.

“So if my dad isn't the shining example of what lifelong learning means,” Saini said, “Then honestly, I don't know who is.”

Commencement Ceremony for Doctoral Candidates

Watch the 5 p.m. commencement ceremony recognizing Ph.D. students

The evening commencement ceremony featured student speaker Bruno Bezerra de Souza. De Souza holds a Master of Science degree from NJIT and was one of the doctoral degree candidates honored tonight, earning his Ph.D. from the civil and environmental engineering department. One of Mr. de Souza’s principal interests is a family of toxic “forever chemicals” known by the acronym PFAS, and researching its properties to look for techniques to destroy them in spite of their resilience.

De Souza recollected that many of the doctoral candidates did a significant amount of their work in the shadow of the COVID pandemic. Throughout the turbulence of his academic pursuit, de Souza developed three personal pillars of advice that he shared with his peers: be humble and use your rarified distinction to make the world a better place; be ready and resilient to great changes and challenges you may face; and be persistent in your pursuits for it is “not our occasional success but our ability to bounce back from adversity that defines us.”

Commencement2024-5pm-9888.jpg

Bruno Bezerra de Souza was the student speaker for the Ph.D. cohort and earned a doctorate in civil and environmental engineering

“Your journey and mine does not start today, though today is an important milestone on our long way,” de Souza said. “Let us embrace these pieces of advice and face the challenges that lie ahead of us with humility, resilience, and persistence.”

Rounding out the speakers was Dr. Carolyn Merkel, who holds a doctorate in chemistry from Columbia and master’s from NJIT in technology management, is the founding partner of Mariner Analytical, LLC. Merkel's consulting firm serves clients in regulated industries ranging from agriculture, pharmaceuticals, construction to food.

Merkel emphasized that the essence of education is not an accumulation of knowledge, “but rather a cultivation of a permanent curiosity about the world, and the resilience to adapt to whatever the future presents.

“In the years to come, you may encounter challenges that require solutions beyond the scope of your current expertise. If learning stops when you receive your degree, you may be frustrated. In these moments, a commitment to continuous learning will be tested. Embrace these opportunities. They are the crucibles in which your skills will be fire-tested, and the anvils on which your character is formed. The hallmark of greatness is not only the ability to solve problems but to anticipate them,” Merkel said.

Commencement2024-5pm-9902.jpg

Dr. Carolyn Merkel emphasized that learning is a lifelong pursuit

Merkel’s anticipation of problems and creative solutions led her back to NJIT to become better versed in analyzing financial data. While her background in academia allowed her to decipher scientific data, her pursuit of continuous learning allowed her to be a better colleague and further develop her business.

“I urge you to uphold the values of integrity, responsibility, and empathy in all your endeavors. The impact of your work extends beyond the confines of industry and academia; it touches lives and shapes the future,” Merkel said.

During the ceremony, Ph.D. recipients Xueyu Hou and Mohammad Arif Hossain were awarded the Hashimoto Prize for their distinguished research in electrical and computer engineering. The Hashimoto Prize is part of an endowment that recognizes the generosity and vision of Dr. Kazuo Hashimoto, who is known for more than 1,000 patents and applications related to the invention of the telephone answering machine and other devices in electronics and telecommunications.

Photography, B.F.A.

Today there are more images being made, consumed, and used for more purposes than any time in history — and there's no sign of things slowing down. Major advances in image capture, manipulation, and distribution have redefined what is possible and have raised the bar for working professionals. It isn't enough to just know how to use the tools of photography. We extend that working knowledge to include honing a student's creative vision, elevating their aesthetic choices, and helping them develop a photographic voice that will set them apart from others. MTSU's Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography combines these skills with a foundation of theory and history to prepare students for various careers in photography.

Some of the program highlights are:

  • Multiple digital printing labs with editing stations and up-to-date Adobe Software Suites
  • Professional printing capabilities with 4 large format printers
  • Scanning lab with flatbed scanners and virtual drum scanner
  • Multiple studios including one with a large Cyc wall
  • Classroom sizes accommodate low student-to-instructor ratio
  • Traditional and alternative process darkrooms
  • Multiple camera systems (both film and digital) for student use
  • Internship opportunities
  • Active student organization
  • Faculty comprised of experienced, active professionals

Students are immersed in contemporary photography through the Baldwin Photographic Gallery which brings several visiting artists each year to interact with students. Associated with the gallery is the Baldwin Photographic Collection & Archive which holds photographic prints from many well-known photographers. The unique blend of the program sets it apart and establishes a foundation for the students to build upon and evolve with the medium of photography across the entire curriculum.

Guggenheim Photography Fellowship winner brings expertise to MTSU

Guggenheim Photography Fellowship winner brings expertise to MTSU

Kristine Potter has never stayed in one place long but has found that wherever she goes, photography is sure to follow. "I went to the University of Georgia for undergrad, where I earned a BFA in Photography and a BA in Art History. From there, I moved to Paris, France, on a crazy whim and ended up getting a full-time job in a high-end photo lab, printing for artists, fashion houses, and journalists. Eventually, I longed to get back into a rigorous conversation about my own photography and so I applied to the MFA program at Yale - where I was accepted and attended 2003 to 2005." In the time between teaching at Purchase College in New York, and joining the Photography faculty in 2020, Kristine has received several awards, including the 2018 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography and 2019 Grand Prix Images Vevey. She has been published in several publications like Manifest and Oasis and her work is in numerous public and private collections, including, The Georgia Museum of Art, 601 Artspace, Swiss Camera Museum, and Foundation Vevey. Her wide talent showcase has mixed well with the MTSU facilities and Kristine has been very hands-on with all of it. "I am teaching courses at all levels, from the darkroom to the digital lab, and helping to create opportunities for the students post-graduation. The McFarland Building is a really special place. The facilities are incredible and the whole building just has a good vibe. Students are able to explore photography in a wide range of applications. We are educating students to prepare them for life, but they are also receiving practical training that they can apply to a wide range of jobs."

Photography students learn in a building all their own

Photography students learn in a building all their own

Photography students at MTSU enjoy their own dedicated space — the recently renovated McFarland Building — filled with classrooms and functional areas that enhance learning and overall growth as people. The building is roughly divided into a "dry side" and "wet side," says Jonathan Trundle, Photography program coordinator. The dry side includes two digital classrooms as well as an open digital lab for use outside class. Equipped with large format scanners and printers, the area also includes space for socializing. A camera obscura in one of the classrooms "allows students to see the physics of light and puts them inside a camera to see how it works," explains Trundle. A student gallery gives Photo majors opportunities to prepare and display work from their portfolios. The wet side includes two traditional darkrooms and one alternative process darkroom. Spacious tabletop and photo studios, the latter with an infinity wall, inspire imagination and foster creativity. However, students will find aids beyond equipment that make their work easier. A strategically placed squeegee panel for wet prints and detailed instructions for operating various equipment and gear are touches Trundle has added as student and curricular needs became apparent. "I want to encourage students to "use light to tell stories," he says.

Headshot of Paul Byrnes

Paul Byrnes joined Emory in 2008 and guided efforts on faculty salary competitiveness, tuition planning and graduate student funding.

Paul Byrnes, vice provost for academic finance, will serve as the next senior vice chancellor of finance and administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, effective July 1.

Byrnes joined Emory as senior director of business services in 2008 before becoming the associate dean for finance and operations and chief business officer for the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed vice provost for academic finance within the Office of the Provost.

During his career at Emory, Byrnes led a wide range of initiatives focused on improving the university's financial and operational sustainability. He championed efforts to expand funding for graduate student stipends, revamp the tuition planning process, develop faculty salary equity and competitiveness analyses, and implement student lifecycle measures to complement Emory’s graduation and retention efforts.

Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs , describes Byrnes as a collaborative team leader and strategic analyst who worked with Office of the Provost staff, academic deans and chief business officers across campus to continuously improve administrative structures and optimize financial and operational resources.

"We are grateful for Paul and his commitment to ensuring Emory properly stewards its finances and resources,” says Bellamkonda. “We will miss his valuable insights and dedication to collaborating with schools and units across the institution but are excited for him to serve in a senior leadership role at a flagship public university.”

A billionaire gave college grads $1000 each at commencement - but they can only keep half

Graduates at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth received more than flowers and a commemorative degree frame this weekend when a commencement guest surprised them with envelopes full of cash.

Granite Telecommunications  founder and CEO Robert Hale, Jr. attended the ceremony on Saturday in anticipation of receiving the Chancellor's Medal for his work in local philanthropy. True to form, Hale took the opportunity to share some more of his more than $5 billion fortune, reported The Standard Times , part of the USA TODAY Network.

“These trying times have heightened the need for sharing, caring and giving,” Hale told the 1,200 graduation students. “We want to give you two gifts: the first is our gift to you, the second is the gift of giving.”

Grads soon found out that the truck near the stage was filled with duffle bags containing envelopes with $500 cash in $100 bills. Each graduate received two of the envelopes: one for themselves, and one for giving to an organization or person need.

"Our community and our world need our help now more than ever, Hale told the audience. ”The greatest joys we've had in our life have been the gift of giving."

Still unsure about college?: It's not too late to apply for scholarships or even school.

Not the first graduation surprise

Perhaps even more surprising than the gift itself is the fact that this is not the first time Hale has made such a donation.

Back in 2021, Hale made headlines for giving Quincy College graduates the same unexpected present; $1,000 given to each graduate via two envelopes, one with $500 to keep for themselves and one to give to an organization “that needs it more than them.”

The announcement was made mid-ceremony when each of the 490 grads was told the white van parked on the field of Veterans Memorial Stadium contained envelopes filled with cash.

"We are going to give you two gifts. The first is for you, second one is the gift intended to be the gift of giving," Hale said at the time, reported The Patriot Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network. "This pandemic heightened our need to help others, and we wanted you to share in the joy of sharing. Our community needs you more than ever."

Who is Robert Hale?

Robert Hale Jr. is an American businessman, founder and CEO of Granite Telecommunications and co-founder of Boston-based commercial real estate firm FoxRock Properties.

According to Forbes, Hale has a current net worth of $5.4 billion, making him the 572nd richest person in the world and number 203 on the list of wealthiest Americans.

As previously reported by The Patriot Ledger , Hale did not appear on Forbes' list of billionaires until 2022 but has grown his wealth by $2.2 billion since then. In the past year alone, he bumped up his worth by $400 million.

One of the wealthiest people in the state of Massachusetts, Hale is a native of North Andover but also has homes in Hingham and Boston. Hale founded Granite Telecommunications in 2002 after a previous business venture went bankrupt, resulting in hundreds of employees losing their jobs, reported The Patriot Ledger.

Granite found itself the subject of some ridicule earlier this year when 68 workers were laid off due to automation and changing tech, reported The Ledger.

Hale received the Chancellor's Medal for his involvement in philanthropy, which includes donating large sums to the tune of $270 million to charitable causes and hosting the annual “Saving by Shaving” fundraiser to secure millions in funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, according to The Ledger. The profile also notes that this number represents about 5% of his wealth, which landed him a philanthropy rating of 3 out of 5.

He likewise received a Forbes cover story in October 2022 when he and his wife Karen pledged to donate $1 million a week to small non-profits locally and beyond. According to The Patriot Ledger , donations went to a variety of organizations, including a wildlife center, hospice program, Boys & Girls Club, programs providing financial support for women and at-risk youth, cancer research, education and youth development programs, funds for children with muscular dystrophy, and an organization providing shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Grad song of the year: Noah Kahan's 'You’re Gonna Go Far' is the new graduation anthem making people ugly cry

More moments from graduation season

Thanks to social media, the most eventful moments of the 2024 graduation season have made for some interesting online viewing, even for those not attending a ceremony in person this year.

A commencement speaker at Thomas Jefferson University apologized earlier this month after an embarrassing series of name mispronunciations left graduates and audience members baffled. The college later issued a written apology explaining that the announcer had been reading the phonetic pronunciations written out on the name cards, leading to confusion.

In another viral commencement moment, NFL player Harrison Butker stirred major controversy with his commencement speech at Benedictine College in which he told female graduates they had been told the "most diabolic lies" about having successful careers when they should be "most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world," as being a "homemaker" is the most important title for women.

Protests and walkouts have also featured prominently this season. Biden's speech at Morehouse College faced some pushback, while Jerry Seinfeild's speaker spot at Duke caused students to walk out.

Pro-Palestine protests at colleges across the country drew attention in the weeks leading up to commencement ceremonies as well, including encampments and ongoing demonstrations at prominent schools like Berkley, Columbia, MIT, UPenn, Pomona and Brown.
