Final 2023 College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship Winners Announced

twitter

Today, National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced approximately 750 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 3,000 other college-sponsored award recipients announced in June .

Three of these final 750 winners hail from Cobb Schools. Two are Walton graduates, and one is a proud Lassiter alum.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

This year, 153 colleges and universities are sponsoring over 3,800 Merit Scholarship awards. Sponsor colleges include 81 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

This final group of winners brings the number of 2023 National Merit Scholars to more than 7,140. These distinguished high school graduates will receive scholarships for undergraduate study worth a total of nearly $28 million. In addition to college-sponsored awards, two other types of National Merit Scholarships were offered—2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships, for which all Finalists competed, and about 840 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who met criteria specified by their grantor organizations.

The three winners from Cobb Schools are:

Amala Arun, Walton HS, Probable career field: Medicine NATIONAL MERIT EMORY UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Kate Burke, Lassiter HS, Probable career field: Academia NATIONAL MERIT TUFTS UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Rohan Singh, Walton HS, Probable career field: Computer Science NATIONAL MERIT UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations Amala, Kate, and Rohan! Good luck as you pursue further education and training at Emory, Tufts, and UGA. We know you have been prepared well by Lassiter and Walton and look forward to lies ahead for each of you!

2023 National Merit Scholarship Competition

This year’s competition for National Merit Scholarships began when high school juniors took the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. In September 2022, more than 16,000 Semifinalists were named on a state-representational basis in numbers proportional to each state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. Semifinalists were the highest- scoring program entrants in each state and represented less than one percent of the nation’s seniors.

To become a Finalist, each Semifinalist had to complete a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay, describing leadership positions and contributions in school and community activities, showing an outstanding academic record, and being endorsed and recommended by a high school official. Semifinalists also had to take the SAT® or ACT® and earn scores that confirmed their performance on the initial qualifying test. From the Semifinalist group, over 15,000 attained Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists were chosen to receive National Merit Scholarships.

NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. Over the past 68 years, approximately 375,000 outstanding young individuals have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $1.3 billion. The majority of awards offered each year are underwritten by approximately 340 independent corporate and college sponsors that support NMSC’s efforts to recognize scholastically talented youth and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.

What score do you need on the PSAT to qualify for National Merit distinction? The answer to this question depends on where you live. To achieve National Merit recognition, you need to match or exceed the cutoff score in your home state.

We’ve compiled the National Merit Semifinalist state cutoffs based on the most recent data from the fall of 2021. Before checking out the qualifying scores, let’s discuss how the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) determines who is named Commended Student or Semifinalist.

How to Qualify for National Merit

National Merit is open to U.S. citizens who test in the U.S. in the fall of 11th grade. Only your junior year PSAT counts toward National Merit distinction and scholarships, though taking the PSAT as a sophomore or freshman can be good practice, especially if you’re aiming for top scores.

Students who achieve top scores may receive recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. NMSC compares your PSAT scores with those of other students in your state using its own Selection Index, which falls on a scale between 48 and 228.

The top 3-4% of scorers are named Commended Scholar. The top 1%, usually about 16,000 students, are named National Merit Semifinalists . Semifinalists may go on to apply for Finalist status and potentially win scholarship money .

As I mentioned above, NMSC uses its own Selection Index along with state percentiles. Let’s take a look at how your scores convert to this index.

Just how many different scoring scales are actually on the PSAT?

Understanding Your Scores on the PSAT

To understand your National Merit eligibility, you mainly need to pay attention to your PSAT section scores for Reading and Writing/Math. Each section is scored between 160-760.

NMSC multiplies your Reading and Writing score by 2, adds that number to your Math score, and then divides that total sum by 10 . Let’s say you got a 700 on Reading and Writing and a 660 on Math. After doubling your R&W score (700 x 2 = 1,400), adding that sum to your Math score (1,400 + 660 = 2,060), and dividing that big number by 10 (2,060 / 10 = 198), you’d get your National Merit Selection Index Score: 206.

Based on our estimates for the qualifying PSAT scores, a score of 206 wouldn’t make it into the top 1%. Check out the cutoff scores below.

Does your PSAT score report look like a jumble of numbers? For National Merit, you just need to understand one: your Selection Index.

If you tested in Washington DC, then the bar was especially high. You had to score at or above a 223. North Dakota, New Mexico, and West Virginia had the lowest cutoffs at 207. The average cutoff for all states was 214.

If you haven't taken the PSAT yet and are aiming for National Merit, you should aim to get a Selection Index score 2-5 points higher than the cutoff score for your state. The reason you should aim a little higher is that qualifying scores can fluctuate a little from year to year.

Aiming for a National Merit Scholarship but worried your score won't qualify? Based on these cutoffs, how can you figure out what section scores you need on the PSAT to qualify for National Merit?

body-soccer-goal-cc0-pixabay

Let's talk goals.

What Should You Score on Each PSAT Section?

As discussed above, NMSC's Selection Index multiplies your Reading and Writing score by 2, adds that to your Math score, and then divides that entire sum by 10 . This means that the Reading and Writing section score is worth double what your Math score is worth when calculating your Selection Index Score. So, how you perform on the Reading and Writing section will heavily impact the score you need for Math.

In order to figure out what you need for each section, use these steps:

First, take your state’s qualifying score and multiply it by 10. Then, divide that number by 3. This will give you a general idea of the score you need on each section to meet your state’s qualifying score.

Here’s an example using New York’s 2023 state qualifying score:

220 x 10 = 2,200

2,200 / 3 = 733

In this example, you’d need to get at least 733 for both sections to earn New York’s state qualifying score. Of course, scoring a little lower or higher on either section could still get you there.

If you're much stronger in math than you are in writing, then you could aim for a perfect 760 on Math and a little lower on Reading and Writing. Overall, you need to get a section score above 715 on both sections of the PSAT to compete for National Merit, with some states requiring even higher section scores. Again, aim for a few points higher than the minimum , as cutoffs can vary somewhat from year to year.

If your goal is to be named National Merit Semifinalist, then you'll want to put in some effort toward prepping for the PSAT. Below you'll find links to useful resources, such as official PSAT practice tests and sample questions.

You'll need to crack the books to get a purrfect score.

How to Prep for the PSAT

The best way to prepare for the PSAT is to familiarize yourself with official practice questions and self-timed PSAT practice tests . Score your attempts, figure out your strengths and weaknesses, and design a study plan that targets your weak areas.

Depending on where you’re starting out, you might want to put in 40 hours of prep or more . You should familiarize yourself with the test content to review key concepts and get used to the tricky wording of the PSAT/NMSQT . At the same time, you can try out different strategies for answering questions efficiently, like recognizing answer types and using the process of elimination.

One essential part of studying is reviewing and analyzing your mistakes . Rather than taking a practice test and moving right on to the next, you should take the time to deconstruct your errors piece by piece. Did you misunderstand the question, lack content knowledge, or make a careless mistake? By understanding the root of your mistake, you can figure out what you need to fix for next time.

All of your prep might not only pay off with National Merit distinction and scholarships, but it should also help you achieve excellent scores on the SAT!

National Merit Scholarship PSAT Score Cutoff by State 2023-24

September 14, 2023

Before we reveal the National Merit Scholarship PSAT score cutoff by state in 2023-2024 and National Merit Scholarship requirements, a short history lesson…In 1955, the headlines were dominated by earth-shaking events such as Rosa Parks’ act of civil disobedience that set off the Montgomery Bus Boycott, athletic triumphs like the long-suffering Brooklyn Dodgers finally defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series, and business developments like McDonald’s opening the doors to its first franchise restaurants. Back then, the United States was engaged in a frantic scientific race with the Soviet Union and the country was desperate to identify talented young people who could play a hand in winning the Cold War. Toward this aim, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in order to help discover America’s brightest teens and offer them a financial reward as they pursued higher education.

In 1956, just 58,158 students entered the competition; by 2022, that figure has risen to approximately 1.5 million. In order to help you fully understand this widely-entered contest, the College Transitions team will explain:

  • The entry requirements for the National Merit Scholarship Program
  • How National Merit Scholars are selected
  • What PSAT score do I need to win a National Merit Scholarship?
  • When the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announces scholarship winners
  • How much money you win as a National Merit Scholarship recipient
  • What are the admissions-related benefits of being a National Merit Scholar?
  • How has COVID-19 impacted the National Merit Scholarship selection process?

National Merit Scholarship Requirements

The criteria for qualifying is as follows:

  • You must take the PSAT/NMSQT in your third year (junior year) of high school.
  • You must be enrolled as a high school student in either a traditional or homeschool setting.
  • Additionally, you must plan on enrolling in college the fall after high school graduation.
  • You must attend high school in the U.S., District of Columbia, or U.S. commonwealth or territory. If you are attending high school in a foreign country, you are still eligible as long as you hold U.S. citizenship.

How are National Merit Scholars selected?

Out of the roughly 1.5 million students taking the exam in 2023, only 50,000 will qualify for National Merit Program recognition. Right off the bat, 34,000 of this high-scoring group will be handed Letters of Commendation, but they will not continue on in the competition for a monetary scholarship. The other 16,000 students will be granted “Semifinalist” status.

Your score on the PSAT will get you in the running. Yet, it takes more than a stellar standardized test score to become a National Merit Scholar. As such, when academic prowess is included as part of the evaluation, roughly 1,000 Semifinalists are excluded. From this remaining pool of 15,000 “Finalists,” 7,600 will be selected as National Scholarship Winners based on a review of their “abilities, skills, and accomplishments.”

PSAT/NMSQT Cutoffs by State

Some students do not realize that the cutoff score to become a Semifinalist varies (sometimes greatly) by state. Each test-taker is awarded a “Selection Index Score” which is calculated by doubling the sum of your reading, writing & language; and math scores, At the low end, West Virginia, North Dakota, and Mexico have recently used 207 as a cutoff while DC, Massachusetts, and New Jersey have utilized a far more rigorous cutoff of 220+.  These scores can change from year-to-year. Below are the cutoffs for the high school graduating class of 2024.

When are National Merit Scholar winners announced?

The NMSC releases the names of scholarship winners in April, May, June, and July.

How much money do you get from the National Merit Scholarship?

From a purely monetary standpoint, some may consider the most commonly awarded scholarship amounts to be a bit disappointing. They are as follows:

National Merit Scholarships : $2,500 toward freshman year only.

Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards : These are four-year renewable awards that range from $500 to $2,000 per year.

College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards : The best deal of the three, college-sponsored scholarships typically range from $500 to $10,000 per year. These are renewable for all four years of college.

However, it is important to realize that being a National Merit Finalist/Semifinalist can also lead to a greatly reduced or even FREE tuition at some universities. Being a National Merit Finalist or Semifinalist is one component of some of the most generous merit aid scholarships at premier universities including:

Fordham University : Those who were National Merit Finalists or Semifinalists AND possess a solid “A” average and are in the top 2-3% of all admitted students (as determined by the university) receive free tuition, renewable for all four years.

New Jersey Institute of Technology : National Merit Finalists are eligible to receive all tuition and fees covered. This is renewable for four years, contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Texas Tech University : National Merit Finalists who designate Texas Tech as their top choice are eligible to receive a full free ride. This includes room & board.

University of Southern California : If USC is your first-choice college and you are a National Merit Finalist then you are eligible for a scholarship equal to half tuition (approximately $29,000).

What are the admissions benefits of being a National Merit Scholar?

The benefits of being a National Merit Scholar go well beyond sheer monetary assistance. The prestige of the award will also provide a boost to most students in their application process. Colleges like to mention the number of National Merit Scholars in their incoming freshman class, so earning this distinction can be a nice feather in your cap. The following schools enrolled massive numbers of Merit Scholar awardees in one recent freshman class:

  • Harvard University: 195
  • Stanford University: 157
  • Duke University: 106
  • Princeton: 90
  • Cornell: 78

Of course, it is important to note that these students were not admitted solely because they had won a single award. Most students getting accepted into any of the above institutions possessed near-perfect grades and standardized test scores AND had other special attributes outside of the classroom that helped them stand out from an extremely talented pack of applicants.

Capturing a National Merit Scholarship is an excellent credential to include on your application, but it is far from a guaranteed ticket to an Ivy or Ivy-equivalent institution. Possessing such a credential will, however, provide an even greater admissions boost at schools in the next tier of selectivity. The following excellent schools attract far fewer scholarship winners than their uber-elite peers and are more likely to grant National Merit Scholars a major edge in the admissions process:

  • Bates College: 1
  • Haverford College: 3
  • Colgate University: 4
  • Middlebury College: 6
  • NC State: 7

Key Takeaways – National Merit Scholarship PSAT Score

  • Your PSAT score junior year will be the biggest factor in your pursuit of a National Merit award.
  • While a “national” award, the cutoff scores actually vary by state.
  • Winners receive one of three types of awards—National Merit Scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, or college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
  • Certain universities will also award sizable merit aid scholarships (up to full tuition), even for Semifinalists.
  • A National Merit designation can help in the admissions process. However, your SAT/GPA and “hook” will matter more at America’s most selective schools.

National Merit Semifinalist Cutoffs Class of 2025

national merit scholarship essay 2023

April 8 Update:

The Commended cutoff — the minimum score to be considered for National Merit honors — for the class of 2025 is 208. This is the highest cutoff in 4 years. Compass’s analysis of the results from the first digital PSAT showed that the Commended cutoff would fall in the 208 – 210 range, so the 208 is in line with expectations.

Compass has incorporated the Commended cutoff into its projections for the Semifinalist cutoffs, which will begin filtering out around Labor Day.

Why haven’t I been told anything by my school? The April announcement is to schools only and is not an official notification of a student’s status. Honored students are not notified until September.

Why aren’t Semifinalist cutoffs announced at the same time? National Merit must receive student eligibility information from schools and then calculate the separate Semifinalist cutoffs for each state. Only the Commended cutoff is national. NMSC will mail high schools the names of Semifinalists at the end of August, and students will be notified by their schools in early to mid-September. Schools are not given the Commended Student letters until after Semifinalists are announced.

[The November 2023 post below has been updated with the Commended cutoff information.]

The 2023 digital PSAT/NMSQT for the class of 2025 represents the biggest change to the National Merit Scholarship Program since the PSAT was overhauled in 2015. Each year Compass looks at the results from the PSAT and tracks projected Selection Index cutoffs for Commended Students and for Semifinalist in each of the 50 states. [See National Merit Scholarship Program Explained for full details on stages and instructions . For information on the class of 2024 cutoffs, see this archive .]

Instead of having schools administer a paper test on fixed dates, College Board allowed the digital PSAT to be offered throughout October. College Board also introduced a new score return policy. Students taking the test on or before October 14th receive scores on November 6th. Students taking the PSAT after October 14th receive their scores on November 16th. Compass now has the data from both release windows. Approximately 50,000 students landed in the 1400-1520 score band from almost 1.5 million test takers. The initial half of scores already accounted for 30,000 of top band scores, so the later testers had a lower proportion of high scorers. This will come as a relief to students who were fearing an extremely large jump in Selection Index cutoffs.

This year is shaping up similar to the class of 2021 (the last pre-pandemic PSAT) and, reaching back farther, the class of 2017.

national merit scholarship essay 2023

The number of top scorers is the most critical piece of information that we get this early in the process. There is a strong correlation between the 1400-1520 band of students and the Commended Student score.

The line of best fit shows that this year's total of 50,000 top scorers is likely to result in a Commended cutoff of 209.

[ We now know the exact Commended cutoff is 208. -Ed. ] The Commended Student cutoff is likely to rise to 209 (above the 207 from the last 3 years). Estimates can be imperfect, but we are confident that the Commended cutoff will fall within the 208 to 210 range. The higher Commended cutoff, in turn, correlates with higher Semifinalist cutoffs. Below are those estimates.

The shift to a shorter, online and adaptive exam is unlikely to wreak the havoc we saw when the “revised PSAT” was introduced 8 years ago. That test overhauled content AND scoring. The digital SAT represents a content change — mainly on Reading and Writing — but keeps the 320-1520 score range intact. The Selection Index, too, remains consistent, with the Reading and Writing score having twice the weight of the Math score.

However, for any given state, a change in cutoff is more likely than not. Historically, Semifinalist cutoffs remain unchanged only about one-third of the time.

Distribution of year-over-year cutoff changes shows that there is a roughly normal distribution, with no change occurring 30% of the time.

Even in years where the Commended cutoff remains static, we see half of state cutoffs go up or down. And it is extremely improbable that the Selection Index will be static. The chart below divides the 50 states into those that saw increases (blue), those that remained unchanged (gray), and those that saw declines (red). We are likely to see a year with far more blue than gray and more gray than red.

The number of states seeing cutoff changes has never dropped below 25. In some years, virtually all cutoffs have gone up or down.

Uncertainty around exactly which state cutoffs will change and by how much is why we encourage students to compare their scores to the full estimated range in the table above rather than to a single value (our “Most Likely”). These estimates are built from prior performance data and from data on what scores are doing nationally. State and national numbers are not always in alignment. Cutoffs are particularly bumpy in states with smaller pools of test takers and National Merit Semifinalists. Over the last 10 years, large states’ cutoffs have remained within 1 point of the prior cutoff 88% of the time. That figure drops to 73% for midsized states and 53% for small states. No large state’s cutoff has jumped by more than 3 points in a year, whereas 6-point changes have occurred in the pool of smaller states. Scores also tend to be more stable as they get higher. It is more unusual for a state to move from 221 to 222, for example, than for a state to move from 212 to 213.

What does a cutoff mean? Do I need to score at the cutoff or above it? Students must have a Selection Index at or above the official cutoff in order to qualify for National Merit honors.

The top 52,000 to 54,000 students will receive some form of honors. National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) determines the cutoff number that comes closest to producing the target number of national honorees. This is the Commended cutoff.

How are Semifinalist cutoffs set? Unlike the national Commended cutoff, Semifinalist cutoffs are calculated state by state. NMSC allocates the 16,000 semifinalists among states based on the annual number of high school graduates. For example, California sees about 2,000 Semifinalists every year, Michigan 500, and Wyoming 25. In each state, NMSC determines the Selection Index that comes closest to matching its target number of Semifinalists. If 1,900 California students score 222 and higher and 2,050 score 221 or higher, then the Semifinalist cutoff would be 221 (this assumes that the target is exactly 2,000). Because score levels can get crowded, it is easy for cutoffs to move up or down a point even when there is minimal change in testing behavior or performance.

No Semifinalist cutoff can be lower than the national Commended level. Cutoffs for the District of Columbia and for U.S. students studying abroad are set at the highest state cutoff (typically New Jersey). The cutoff for students in U.S. territories and possessions falls at the Commended level each year. Boarding schools are grouped by region. The cutoff for a given region is the highest state cutoff within the region.

Why does the number of top scorers vary from year to year? While there are changes in the number of students taking the PSAT/NMSQT, there can also be small flaws in test scaling that play a role. Prior to the digital PSAT, a single test form was seen by a large percentage of test takers. Something amiss with that single form could impact selection cutoffs across the country. The digital PSAT is constructed differently. Students receive unique form codes drawn from a large pool of problems. Scaled scores are generated based on the characteristics of those problems. In theory, this should make scores more stable. College Board’s early studies have found an extremely high correlation between the paper-and-pencil test and digital test. Still, even with its adaptive nature, the uncertainty remains as to whether the much shorter test can reliably score students at the 700-760 end of the scale. It appears that the class of 2025 is roughly average compared to the classes of 2017 to 2024 (the years after the change from the 2400 to 1520 scale).

Will test cancellations raise or lower qualifying scores for the National Merit Scholarship Program? College Board’s online systems failed under load on one of the biggest testing days. There was also a bug that prevented iPads on the latest operating system from submitting exams. We do not know how many schools or students simply gave up and did not retest on rescheduled dates. If the cancellations increase the number of students pursuing alternate entry (see Compass’s explanation of National Merit alternate entry ) then cutoffs could rise. Alternate entrants tend to have higher scores, because they can submit SAT scores through June 2024 to enter the competition. They must apply by April.

When are National Merit Semifinalists announced? The Commended cutoff becomes unofficially known by the end of April. The lists of Semifinalists are not distributed to high schools until the end of August. NMSC sets a press embargo on Semifinalist announcement until mid-September, but schools are allowed to notify students before that date. NMSC does not send Commended Student letters to high schools until mid-September. Compass will keep students updated on developments as those dates approach.

Do state and national percentiles indicate whether I will be a National Merit Semifinalist? No! Approximately 1% of test takers qualify as Semifinalists each year, so it is tempting to view a 99th percentile score as indicating a high enough score — especially now that College Board provides students with percentiles by state. There are any number of flaws that rule out using percentiles as a quick way of determining National Merit status.

  • Percentiles are based on section scores or total score, not Selection Index
  • Percentiles are rounded. There is a large difference, from a National Merit perspective, between the top 0.51% and the top 1.49%
  • Percentiles reveal the percentage of students at or below a certain score, but the “at” part is important when NMSC is determining cutoffs.
  • The number of Semifinalists is based on the number of high school graduates in a state, not the number of PSAT takers. Percentiles are based on PSAT takers. States have widely varying participation rates.
  • Most definitive of all: Percentiles do not reflect the current year’s scores! They are based on the prior 3 years’ performance. They are set even before the test is given. And if you are going to use prior history, why not use the completely accurate record of prior National Merit cutoffs rather than the highly suspect percentiles?

Entry requirements for National Merit versus qualifying for National Merit. Your PSAT/NMSQT score report tells you whether you meet the eligibility requirements for the NMSP. In general, juniors taking the October PSAT are eligible. If you have an asterisk next to your Selection Index, it means that your answers to the entrance questions have made you ineligible. Your answers are conveniently noted on your score report. If you think there is an error, you will also find instructions on how to contact NMSC. Meeting the eligibility requirements simply means that your score will be considered. Approximately 1.4 million students enter the competition each year. Only about 52,000 students will be named as Commended Students, Semifinalists, Finalists, or Scholars. See National Merit Explained for more information.

Thanks Art! I appreciate your experience, wisdom, and time in responding.

We’re in Michigan and my student received a selection index score of 218. We’re feeling ‘on the bubble’. Could you tell us whether Michigan is considered a larger state (smaller swings) or a medium state (little more volatile) and what percentage you would apply to the likelihood of being a national merit semifinalist? Thank you!

Brad, Michigan is relatively steady. We saw big jumps when the Michigan switch from state-funded ACTs to state-funded SATs, but that is well in the rearview at this point. The years where Michigan was at 219 were all ones where we saw high Commended cutoffs. A move to 219 is not impossible, but I consider it very unlikely — <10%. So that puts likelihood of a 218 at 90%+.

My son is sitting on a 800 Math / 700 EBRW on the SAT. I would like to enroll him in the June 1 SAT Intensive Course (so he could bump that verbal score up for the purpose of NMSC). That said, I would like that to cover only the EVRW portion of the course (at half the cost for the course). Would that be doable? (I have to enroll him by tomorrow, April 26).

Best regards, Tsvetan

Sorry that I am just seeing this Tsevtan. Unfortunately, we do not currently offer a group class that concentrates exclusively on the ERW.

If he is a junior, then that SAT score will already be sufficient as a confirming score. If he is a sophomore looking to get ready for the fall PSAT/NMSQT, then I can appreciate why he wants to do some verbal work.

Hi, this is all new to us. My daughter got at 212 in South Dakota… I’m thinking from what I’ve read on your site that there is a high chance she will at least be a commended scholar? Thanks!

Rachael, At minimum, your daughter will receive Commended honors. The Semifinalist cutoff for South Dakota is a wildcard. In the past it has come in as low as the Commended level and as high as 5 points above Commended. Your daughter will qualify as long as it doesn’t go higher than +4 (the Commended is 208 this year). I’d put her chances at Semifinalist at around 60-70%.

Hello, I got 218 in Illinois. Will this be enough to be a semi finalist this year?

John, I think it’s a bit more likely that the cutoff will come in at 219 this year, but we did see 218 for the class of 2022. I’d estimate the offs of a drop at about 1 in 3. Good luck!

Colleges measure the strength of your academic profile using the Academic Index. The Academic Index measures your GPA and standardized test scores, including the SAT and ACT. Many selective schools will reject applicants who don’t have a high enough Academic Index before even looking at their application (though this has changed somewhat with test-optional policies).

In light of this, it’s critical to have a competitive ACT or SAT score to receive merit-based scholarships and gain admission into top-rated schools. To see how your test scores impact your admissions chances, you can use CollegeVine’s free Admissions Calculator . This tool considers your GPA, extracurriculars, test scores, and more to determine your personal chances at your dream school. Plus, it will offer you tips on how you can improve your profile to increase your chances of acceptance!

What is a merit scholarship?

A merit scholarship is typically awarded based on academic success or extracurricular record. They can be given directly by the school or by a separate for-profit or non-profit organization.

Like other scholarships, merit scholarships may be given on a one-off basis or be renewable for several years. Undergraduate, graduate and professional students may qualify for merit scholarships. These scholarships can be used to cover tuition, room and board, textbooks and other necessary expenses.

How to apply for a merit scholarship

The key to winning any scholarship is to thoroughly read through and understand all the rules. Too many students hurt their chances by not including all necessary documents or by missing the application deadline. If you have any questions or need clarification, make sure to reach out to the scholarship coordinator.

If you're not a standout student, look at the essay portion as your chance to shine. Talk about anything that sets you apart from other students. For example, if you’re the first person in your family to attend college, make sure the scholarship committee knows this.

Types of merit scholarships

There are several kinds of merit scholarships that students can win. Here are the most common categories:

When most people think about merit scholarships, they generally think about academic scholarships. These are given to students who have excellent grades and high test scores.

Academic scholarships often have a minimum GPA requirement , but you’ll also often need letters of recommendation and a winning essay. Remember, even with a near perfect transcript you still need to stand out.

Athletic scholarships are generally given from the school itself. However, there are also organizations that award scholarships for sports-inclined students. There may or may not be some athletic achievement requirements, such as being a varsity athlete or going to the state championships. You may also need a reference letter from a coach.

For example, the Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship is given to a student from Iowa who is also a stellar athlete. There are two awards, one for a male athlete and one for a female athlete. The scholarship is worth $1,000.

Artistic scholarships are given to students who display a talent for the arts. To apply for one of these scholarships, you usually have to submit your portfolio or a selection of your work. These scholarships may also require a recommendation letter from a current or previous art teacher.

These artistic scholarships are often only available to certain kinds of artists. For example, the BMI Future Jazz Master Scholarship is given to a college student studying jazz. However, there may also be some general art scholarships.

Demographic-based

A demographic-based merit scholarship is given to a student who is part of a certain group. For example, there are certain merit-based scholarships just for Asian-American students or students who identify as LGBTQIA+ .

For example, the Blacks at Microsoft scholarship is given to an African-American student who is majoring in a STEM field. This merit-based scholarship has both demographic and academic requirements that students must meet to qualify.

Frequently asked questions about merit scholarships

What kinds of merit scholarships are there.

You can get a merit scholarship based on your success in athletics, academics or in other areas. There may also be merit scholarships for students from a certain ethnicity, gender or other minority group.

Where can I find merit scholarships?

Students can find merit scholarships through scholarship directories, like Scholarships.com, or by directly searching for awards on Google.

When you apply to college, many schools will automatically consider you for merit scholarships. However, some will have separate scholarship applications. Contact the financial aid department at each school and ask what their merit scholarship process is.

Once you’re enrolled in a school, you should keep applying for merit scholarships. Many students stop looking for scholarships after their first year, assuming they’re only available for incoming freshmen. However, upperclassmen can still qualify for many types of merit scholarships.

Do I need to complete the FAFSA to qualify for a merit scholarship?

Some merit scholarships do not require that students submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible. However, many schools will still ask students to complete the FAFSA. This allows students to maximize their federal and state financial aid before receiving internal awards.

Many students mistakenly think that filling out the FAFSA only matters if they can qualify for need-based aid. If you skip out on the FAFSA though, you may hurt your chances of receiving merit-based scholarships.

Plus, filling out the FAFSA is your only way to get federal student loans, which most students need to pay for college. Also, circumstances can always change. Even if you aren’t eligible for need-based aid now, it doesn’t mean you won’t be in the future. Get in the habit of filling out the FAFSA every year.

I didn’t take the SATs or ACT - Can I still apply for a merit scholarship?

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many schools have stopped requiring the SAT or ACT, making it easier for students who don’t test well. Because of this, many students no longer take standardized tests.

Some scholarships have updated their applications to reflect this and no longer require students to submit their SAT or ACT scores. However, this isn’t true for all scholarships. If you don’t want to take these standardized tests, look for scholarships that don’t ask for them or list them as optional.

Do I need a perfect GPA to receive a merit scholarship?

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a 4.0 GPA to win a merit scholarship. The exact GPA requirement will vary based on the scholarship, but it usually starts at 3.0.

Some experts say that a minimum 3.5 GPA is necessary to win a merit scholarship. However, the awarding organization may look at other aspects like your extracurricular record, recommendation letters and essay. They may also consider your life circumstances, such as being in the foster care system, losing a parent early on or being an immigrant.

Remember, as long as you meet the basic requirements, you should apply to as many merit scholarships as possible. There’s no point in taking yourself out of the running by not applying.

How can I increase the odds of winning a merit scholarship?

Some schools offer a generous merit aid package - as long as you apply early enough. Many internal scholarships are only given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once you determine which schools you’re interested in, try to submit your application as soon as possible.

Also, many students lose out on scholarships just because they don’t submit everything that is required. For example, if you are supposed to send in two letters of recommendation and you only provide one, your application will likely be denied.

Remember, scholarships often receive hundreds or even thousands of applicants. Not submitting everything is an easy way to get disqualified immediately.

Also, have someone look at your scholarship application before you submit it and correct any typos. These mistakes may make it look like you don’t really care and can hurt your chances.

Do all schools offer merit scholarships?

Some schools do not offer merit-based aid and only provide awards based on demonstrated financial need. For example, Ivy League schools generally only offer need-based aid , even if you have a perfect GPA and get a 2400 on the SATs.

If your family is not eligible for need-based aid but can’t afford the full cost of college tuition, look for schools that offer merit scholarships.

If you are accepted at an Ivy League school and want to attend, focus on applying for all the third-party scholarships you can find. These can help you bridge the financial gap so you don’t end up with hundreds of thousands in student loans.

Are international students eligible for merit scholarships?

Most scholarships are only given to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and other eligible non-citizens. If you’re an international student, getting a merit scholarship will be much tougher.

You may be better off looking for scholarships within your native country and using those to pay for your education abroad. Also, some schools offer discounted tuition to international students. This can also save you money and minimize how much you have to borrow.

Can I renew a merit scholarship?

Some scholarships are only given for one year, whereas others can be renewed for several years. However, to renew a scholarship, you usually have to meet some basic requirements, like maintaining a certain GPA or taking a certain number of credit hours toward your degree.

If you fail to meet those requirements, your scholarship may be revoked and you may not be able to get it back. You should try as hard as possible to keep your merit scholarship because it’s much easier to renew an award than to win a new one.

Are merit scholarships limited to certain degrees or fields of study?

Merit scholarships can vary greatly. Some are only given to students who are majoring in a certain field, like engineering, whereas others are open to all students.

It might be easier to win a scholarship that is specific to your major or degree. However, if you haven't declared a major yet, it’s still possible to win a general merit scholarship. But, as soon as you find something you’re passionate about, start applying for specific scholarships.

Can community college students win merit scholarships?

While merit scholarships are often focused on traditional undergraduate students, there are still tons of awards for community or technical college students.

For example, the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program gives out scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $1,500, to community college students.

If you’re already enrolled in community college, reach out to your financial aid office and ask about potential scholarships. They can guide you to any internal awards that you’re a good fit for.

Are there merit scholarships for graduate or professional school students?

Merit scholarships are not limited to just undergraduate students. They may also be available for graduate and professional school students.

For example, the Future Attorneys of America Merit Scholarship is given to a dedicated law school student. This $5,000 scholarship requires a brief essay and a minimum 3.5 GPA.

While you’re in graduate school, you should keep looking for scholarships. And if you’re employed, ask your company if they offer any scholarships or tuition reimbursement programs. That’s another easy way to get some of your expenses paid for.

I failed a class. Can I still win a merit scholarship?

When you apply for a scholarship, the committee will usually review your GPA or transcript. A failed class won’t help your chances, but it won’t necessarily disqualify you.

This may be especially true if the class isn’t relevant to the scholarship or what you're studying. If there is an opportunity to talk about what you learned from failing the class that can be a great place to explain how you’re still a dedicated student.

Whether you're in third grade or are a post-graduate, if you love filmmaking, we may have the perfect opportunity for you: the Young Filmmakers Contest! Each year, the contest awards between $100 and $1,000 to applicants who submit videos about environmentalism. While there are seven categories split by age group and video type, each applicant’s video must relate to conservation or environmentalism in some way. While those in grade 11 and under are restricted to more specific topics, those in grade 12 and above have more freedom. Submissions may also be submitted individually or in groups. The contest is offered by the One Earth Film Festival, the Midwest’s premier environmental film festival that “creates opportunities for understanding climate change, sustainability and the power of people.” If you want to express your love for the earth through film, we encourage you to apply to the Young Filmmakers Contest! Tips for students applying to no essay scholarships

Look for competitions rather than randomized drawings.

No essay scholarships are alluring because they do away with the pressure that comes with writing an essay for your application. Between your other academic responsibilities, extracurriculars, and other commitments, these essays can present a big roadblock for applicants.

However, you should bear in mind that you are not the only student with this idea. Many applicants are attracted to opportunities that are easy to apply to, and since many no essay scholarships are essentially scholarship sweepstakes, that means you have a very low chance of actually winning.

This is not to say that you should not apply to these opportunities, but that you should seek out scholarship opportunities that assess some materials submitted by applicants. Whether this is a video submission, a portfolio, or a photograph you took, it can help your chances greatly.

Be wary of scholarship scams

No essay scholarships are very popular with students because they typically don’t take much time to apply to. Unfortunately, this makes them all the more popular with scammers.

Before applying to any scholarship, and especially no essay scholarships, ensure that you are not giving away any personal information that could be used to steal your identity. Additionally, you should never pay a fee to enter a scholarship competition. For more information on how to avoid scholarship scams, check out our article on how to spot them .

If at first you don’t succeed…

Many no essay scholarships, especially the random drawings, select a winner each month and then reopen. To maximize your chances of winning, make sure to check back each month to throw your hat back in the ring.

If you are looking to apply for scholarships without putting too much time into essays, check out our lists of video scholarships and easy scholarships . While some of these may include short essays, they are generally much less of a commitment than typical scholarship applications.

Don’t over-rely on no essay scholarships

No essay scholarships can be a great no-effort way of applying for educational funding, but make sure that your overall scholarship strategy makes use of all potential funding sources. Make sure especially to seek out local scholarships through community organizations and your high school counselor.

Don’t forget financial aid

If you have demonstrable financial need, there is one source of free funds for your higher education that is even easier to get than no essay scholarships. This is federal financial aid, including the Pell Grant . Make sure to fill out the FAFSA on-time and send your results to your school in order to gain eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.

Apply to affordable schools

In addition to scholarships, it’s a good idea to ensure that you apply to some colleges that are known for offering an affordable education to their students. In-state public schools offer steep tuition discounts to their students, and tuition reciprocity agreements extend these benefits to some neighboring states as well. We also have a list of the best schools in the country for affordability . These schools are known for charging low tuition, offering generous financial aid, and offering a good value to their students.
