Purpose – This study examines university students’ perceptions and attitudes towards the use of Instagram in English language writing. Like other social networking sites (SNS), the design of Instagram promotes community-centeredness, and supports the dissemination of authentic content that creates opportunities for meaningful interactions among language learners. Methodology – There were 101 participants of this study who participated in a descriptive English essay writing activity on Instagram, answered a set of questionnaire with 20 closed-ended items, and five open-ended questions about using Instagram for English language learning. Focus groups’ discussions with all of the respondents were held to elaborate the open-ended items. The closed-items were analysed quantitatively using mean scores, while the open-ended items were analysed both quantitatively (mean scores) and qualitatively (content analysis). Social media offers new platforms for digitally native students to learn, engage, interact and collaborate [3] [7] [10]. Increasingly, higher education faculty across the globe are taking advantage of social media platforms as spaces to bridge formal and informal learning through student writing composition, content analysis and digital identity formation [13]. Although many studies have investigated educational uses of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, there is currently relatively little literature on using Instagram in language classrooms. In the Arabian Gulf context, using Instagram is a popular pastime to the point where it can be a distraction in the classroom. One challenge is to utilize such a popular tool for teaching and learning. This article presents the findings from a mixed-method study which investigates how Instagram can be used as a motivating tool for paragraph writing. The study takes the form of classroom-based enquiry, and gains the perspectives of thirty Emirati university students in an English foundation program. Instagram was used as part of a six-week project on the theme of identity, which involved posting pictures and paragraphs weekly on a private class account and giving and receiving peer feedback. The final week of the project involved students making a short movie from this content to be shared with the class. From pre-test and post-test questionnaires and semi-structured focus groups, using Instagram in this way was viewed as motivating and engaging. The majority of participants felt the peer feedback they had received on Instagram had encouraged them to spend more time and effort on their paragraph writing. An additional benefit was the improved rapport felt as a class due to the sharing of important aspects of their identities.

This paper aims to explore the influence of the use of Instagram alongwith in-class instruction on the EAP skills of second language students in tertiary education. It specifically considers the learners' writing productions to see whether one academic year of instruction by using Instagram as a supplementary tool with traditional language teaching fetches any improvement in the academic writing competencies of the target leanrers. It is anticipated that the current study will clarify the different viewpoints pertaining to the possible, advantageous impact of the use of Instagram on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) learners' writing productions and the related benefits. The study starts with the discussion of the young adult language learners, followed by the outlines of their various functions and characteristics within the context of Polish tertitiary education. The subsequent part of the study is centred on the interpretations and role of Social Network Sites (SNSs), in general, and the incorporation of Instagram as a supplementary EAP instructional tool for improving the academic writing for second language students in particular. The last part of the paper is related with the specific study executed for the purpose of this research. It offers a comprehensive explanation of the design of the research and elaborates the impact of the use Instagram on the EAP learners' writing competencies, gauged by the their written productions in the asssignments that the students completed during and at the end of the "Academic Writing". In the end, the discussion and the outcomes of the study are summarised, followed by the concluson which states that the use of Instagram along with the in-class instruction may prove to be benefical for improving the academic writing competencies of the learners.

Social networking sites have become part of the daily life of many individuals, including learners and teachers, who use technology and web-based social platforms as means of regular digital interactions. The popularity of social networking sites has dramatically increased over the last decade, especially among younger adults. Nevertheless, despite their potential of creating connections between people, languages, and cultures they have yet to be widely embraced in the context of language education. Furthermore, while research studies have focused on the integration of Facebook and Twitter in the language classroom setting, there is a lack of studies discussing the use of Instagram to foster cultural understanding. This exploratory paper addresses this gap by discussing how Instagram may be used by language learners to explore different cultures, create e-portfolios, and promote the understanding of diverse habits and practices.

This study aims to determine students' perceptions about Instagram as a medium for descriptive text learning. This research uses a qualitative study. Data collected through questionnaires, and a little interview. These findings reveal that most students assume that they like and are suitable if the diagram is used as a medium for learning descriptive text, because this can make them interested in the material being taught. This study shows that Instagram can be used as an additional medium in learning descriptive text.

Integrating social media into the foreign language classroom can make the teaching and learning more authentic and may help students to use their digital literacy in a reflective manner. Drawing on a framework of multiliteracies (New London Group, 1996), the study reported in this article explored teh integrateion of social media in an assignment in a German intermediate lanugage classrii in a teriary setting, where Instagram was usedas aplatform to support studetns' oral presentations. Ten students took part in this pilot study, which used mixrd data collection methods; these included interviews with students, questionnaires answered by studetns as well as ethnofraphic obsevrations by the instructor. Results showed that the students enjoyed the Instagram task, prefered it to a PowerPoint presentation, and perceived the Instagram based assignment as beneficial for their spoken language learning and learning about German culture.
