Sample Speech by a Chief Guest or Guest of Honor

Ladies and gentlemen,

Distinguished guests,

Faculty members,

Dear students,

I stand before you today with a profound sense of honor and privilege to be invited as the chief guest at this prestigious event. As we gather here, I am reminded of the countless hours of hard work, dedication, and perseverance that have brought us to this moment of celebration.

First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the students who have successfully completed their academic journey. This day marks a significant milestone in your lives, and it is a testament to your commitment to learning and personal growth. Your accomplishments deserve applause, and I am confident that you will continue to achieve greatness in all your future endeavors.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of the faculty and staff who have guided and nurtured these young minds. Education is the foundation upon which societies are built, and the role of educators cannot be overstated. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Today's event is not just about individual achievements; it is a celebration of the collective spirit that thrives in this institution. The bonds forged here, the friendships made, and the experiences shared will shape your lives in ways you may not yet fully comprehend. As you step out into the world, remember to cherish these connections and support one another.

While we celebrate this moment of success, we must also recognize the challenges that lie ahead. Our world is rapidly evolving, and with it comes a myriad of global issues, from climate change to social inequality. As the leaders of tomorrow, it is your responsibility to confront these challenges head-on and work towards building a more just and sustainable future.

Embrace innovation, think critically, and foster a spirit of collaboration. The problems we face today require collective solutions that transcend borders and ideologies. I urge you to be the agents of positive change, to be compassionate and empathetic, and to always strive for excellence in whatever you pursue.

Remember that success is not solely measured by individual achievements but also by the impact we have on others and the world around us. As you excel in your chosen fields, consider how you can give back to society and uplift those who are less fortunate. Be role models, mentors, and beacons of hope for others to follow.

Lastly, never forget the value of lifelong learning. Education does not end here; it is a continuous journey of discovery and growth. Keep an open mind, embrace new ideas, and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of knowledge.

Once again, congratulations to the graduating class, and my best wishes to all the students for a bright and promising future. Thank you to the faculty, staff, and everyone involved in making this institution a center of excellence. Together, let us build a world that is compassionate, equitable, and sustainable.

Long Welcome Speech for Chief Guest

Good morning to one and all present here. Today we all have gathered here to celebrate our 30th annual day function. I am highly honored and feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to address everyone on this very special occasion. The motto of our annual day is to encourage students to participate in various events and showcase their talent. You could be very interested in sketching, drawing, or designing. Anything it may be today, you all have an opportunity to shine and show the world who you are. Today’s event also celebrates our school, as it’s been 30 years since our school has started impacting the lives of thousands of children. For the past 30 years, many students have graduated and have contributed to society in one way or another.

Our school has always believed that the children are the future that will help in making our country great and encourage that idea. We conduct an annual day every year. Students from many classes will be awarded for their accomplishments in both academics and sports. Annual day is not only for those students who are good at academics and sports as it encourages all the students to do better in school. I am sure everyone will grow up to achieve success and will help in contributing to the betterment of society.

We all have gathered here on this annual day to inspire and motivate young minds to showcase their talents and realize their potential. We will be giving awards to the students who have contributed to our school in 2020, but we will also hold various competitions that will help the students recognize the field in which they are good. From art to business the fields are many, students can take part in this competition and learn and improve themself. Annual day is an important occasion for all of us because apart from the fact that it celebrates the success of the student it also highlights the success our school has achieved from the past 30 years in the field of education and sports. This platform is also an opportunity to welcome our chief guest of the evening today.

Taking our evening further and to begin with the Annual day function, I, on behalf of everyone present here, heartily welcome the inaugurator and the dignity of the annual function today, the guest of honor, Mrs. Rekha, who is a social worker, philanthropist and has an experience in teaching for almost 20 years. I was especially thankful for her when we approached her with the invitation card and requested that she be part of the event as the chief guest, Miss. Rekha did not hesitate at all and instantly agreed to be part of the program.

Thirty years ago, a woman left her highly paid job because she felt that she could contribute more to society. That lady went on and has changed the whole landscape of how education is provided in our country. The woman I am talking about is Miss. Rekha. For the past 30 years, ma’am has helped many students to achieve their dreams. I feel so lucky that I was given the opportunity to talk about ma’am and her achievements. I will try my best to sound as formal as I can, and if I don’t, please don’t blame me because I have been an admirer of Miss Rekha’s work from a younger age. Maam has helped establish many institutions across India that help provide free education to all students. She also has multiple branches of non-profit organizations (NGO’s) all across the country that allows underprivileged children to live good lives. The NGO that ma'am runs also provides free scholarships to students who want to study further abroad. I want to thank you because, like me, many have got a free scholarship to study and complete their further education.

Every individual is talented in their way. Everyone has their area of interest, hobbies, and passion. Scoring well in academics or being a topper is one thing, but the inner talent that everyone has is another. One should identify what their passion is and work accordingly despite any societal pressure. The stereotypes created by society have to be broken by the people living there themselves. That's what Mrs. Rekha did. It is an honor for all of us to have you as our chief guest today, and for that, we thank you, ma'am.

Before the program starts, I would like to welcome all the parents who have always supported us in spreading the light of knowledge. I would also like to welcome all the teachers, students, and support staff who are an important part of this school. I would like to request everyone to kindly cooperate with us throughout the program to make it successful.

Last but not least, I would like to request our chief guest, Miss Rekha, to come and light the lamp and start the program, and also, I would ask ma’am to enlighten the audience with your precious words . Thank you, and have a great day, everyone.

Short Chief Guest Speech in English

Good morning to everyone present here today. I extend a warm welcome to everyone present here at the 25th annual function of our college. It is a big day for everyone who has been a part of the college in the present or the past. For the past 25 years, our college has made many accomplishments and has impacted thousands of lives for good or better. It is a special day as it celebrates the success of our college. Today on this occasion we have invited a special guest who was very kind enough to accept our invitation despite having a busy schedule. Ladies and gentlemen, give a round of applause to Mrs. Rekha, who has been working as a social worker for the past twenty years and has experience as a teacher. She has been running NGO’s all across the country that uplifts the poor and allow underprivileged children to study. The NGO’s ma’am has helped many students pursue a career in the different streams that too free of cost.

Miss. Rekha is an inspiration for many as the accomplishments she has made are not an easy task. She has dedicated her past 25 years to providing free education to many students and has ensured that the students get all the facilities that would help them grow into better people. Maam has been successful in running different branches of her school throughout India. Ma'am established Little Angels school on March 22 1997 and for the past 23 years, many schools all across the country with the same name are providing free education to children. She has helped shape a part of society by providing education for many unprivileged students for almost 20 years. Ma'am, I feel honored that I was given this opportunity to speak about you and your accomplishments towards the society in front of my school. On behalf of everyone, we feel lucky to have you at our annual college day function. I hope today many students will be able to seek a little guidance from your thoughts.

I request ma’am to come and light the lamp and enlighten the audience with the precious words as we begin with the event. Thank you.

10 Lines about How to give a Welcome Address for a Chief Guest

The most important step that will add a bonus to any function is welcoming the chief guest in person as soon as he arrives. Greeting the guest with a smile and with his formal title (such as Mr./Ms./Dr. etc.) is a must in any function. Introducing yourself to the guest and escorting him to the formal event will impress the student and the institution.

Some Steps to be followed when the Formal Event starts

What Is the Best Way to Introduce a Speaker?

Introducing a speaker effectively requires careful planning and consideration. Here are some key elements to keep in mind for how to introduce a guest speaker successfully.

1. Research and gather information.

Before introducing the guest speaker, conduct thorough research to gather relevant information about their background, achievements, and expertise. This will help you create an introduction that is both personalized and impactful.

2. Establish credibility.

Highlight the speaker’s credentials and accomplishments to establish their credibility in the eyes of the audience. Share their relevant experience, expertise, and any notable achievements that are relevant to the topic of their presentation.

3. Create a connection.

Find a compelling way to establish a connection between both the speaker and the audience. This can be through shared interests, experiences, or values. For example, if you’re introducing a guest speaker at your university who happens to be an alumnus of your school, make sure you draw attention to that in your introduction. Creating a relatable connection helps the audience connect with the speaker right from the start.

4. Build anticipation.

Aim for a concise, but also interesting, introduction. Use short, direct sentences that convey information clearly. In addition, avoid lengthy biographies or unnecessary details that may lose the audience’s interest. Finally, craft your words carefully to maintain a lively and engaging tone.

What Do You Say First When Introducing a Guest Speaker?

The first few sentences of a guest speaker introduction are crucial in capturing the audience’s attention and setting the tone for the entire introduction. Here are some effective opening lines to consider adding to your script when introducing a guest speaking.

1. Engage listeners with a thought-provoking question.

Start with a thought-provoking question related to the speaker’s topic or expertise. This immediately grabs the audience’s attention and, what’s more, encourages them to actively participate in the introduction. For example: “Have you ever wondered how a single individual can make a significant impact on global environmental issues?”

2. Begin with a captivating anecdote or story.

Introduce the speaker by sharing a captivating anecdote or story that relates to their work or accomplishments. This narrative approach instantly draws the audience in and also builds an emotional connection.

3. Use a powerful quote.

Start with a powerful quote that encapsulates the essence of the speaker’s message or expertise. Quotes are attention-grabbing and can also convey a sense of authority and relevance. For example: “As Albert Einstein once said, ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.'” You can find some powerful quotes from the best motivational speeches , too.

4. Make a bold statement.

Begin your script to introduce your guest speaker with a bold and impactful statement that immediately captures the audience’s attention. This statement should be concise yet intriguing, sparking curiosity as well as setting the stage for the speaker’s presentation. Attention getters are perfect for this. For example: “Today, you’re about to witness a groundbreaking approach to tackling one of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change.”

Remember, the opening lines of your script to introduce a guest speaker are the gateway to engaging the audience and setting the stage for a memorable presentation. Choose an approach that aligns with the speaker’s personality as well as the event’s atmosphere, and don’t be afraid to be creative and captivating.

Chief Guest Introduction Speech: Good evening everyone. I extend a warm welcome to all at the 50th annual function of our school. I find immense pleasure in introducing our honorable chief guest Mr Rajat Venkat, who had been working as a social worker, had himself served as a teacher for more than 20 years and is running a private zoo of his own where he, along with his wife, takes care of several domestic and wild animals.

We are really thankful to him for taking the time out of his busy schedule to attend the function. He is also an alumnus of the school. That is one of the main reasons why he cancelled all his work and was really ecstatic to be here. His love for kids was another. An inspiration to many, Mr Venkat also runs an old age home and is always ready to render a helping hand to the poor and the needy.

The presence of such a personality in a school annual function is a blessing. We hope that the students are able to seek a little guidance and imbibe something from his thoughts.

Long Welcome Speech for Chief Guest 600 Words in English

Introduction Speech for Chief Guest: Chief Guest Introduction Speech, Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to all of you at the 50th annual function of our school. As we look back 50 years ago, we see ourselves as a very small organization set up in a very small area, with around 20 students only. Gradually we started the primary sections, high school and now we are a college with around 8000 students and 70 teachers.

St. Peter’s is one of the renowned institutions in the city. The saplings planted years back have borne fruits. Many of the students who studied here are doctors, engineers, researchers, teachers, writers, IAS, and so on, and one such alumnus is present among us.

How To Welcome Cheif Guest on Stage? I feel extremely honoured to introduce the chief guest tonight, Mr Rajat Venkat, who is a renowned social worker, an animal lover, a teacher, and an ex-student of our school. It is such a privilege to have him on the stage as the chief guest.

Sir had been running a private zoo where he takes care of the sick and stray animals and allows no visitors in the space. He is always in the front when it comes to helping the poor and the needy. He is an inspiration to many. Mr Venkat is also an amazing writer. Many of his poems on social reforms and social problems had won him fame.

He is an amazing person, a loving father, a caring husband, and an adorable son. People like him are hard to find. He is the face of our school. Every student should try and inculcate some of the values he owns. We are proud to have an alumnus like him who is doing something in favour of society. Such selfless service is hard to witness.

Every student has his own talent, qualities and interests. It is not necessary to be a topper in academics but to excel in whatever you do. Not everyone can be a doctor or an engineer, some are dancers, singers, travellers, and chefs. There is ‘n’ number of professions in today’s world. It is just that you need to choose the area of your interest and not what others compel you to do. This is what Mr Venkat did. His love for kids and academics made him an amazing teacher, his love for animals made him their saviour and his love for humanity helped him reform society. One should always do what he wants to and not what he is forced to. This is the mantra of a successful person.

We are very grateful to Mr Rajat Venkat for accepting our invitation and marking his presence here. I now invite him to light the lamp and enlighten the audience with his words before we proceed with the event.

  • Share a quick anecdote or surprising fact about the guest speaker to paint a picture of their personality and character.
  • Get the audience excited for the upcoming presentation with a short sentence stating what the guest speaker will be talking about.
  • Wait until the very end to introduce the guest speaker by their full name and title.

chief guest introduction speech pdf

Researching the Speaker

Step 1 Ask the speaker what they’d like you to say.

  • When the speaker provides an introduction for you, use it. Read it over a few times and don’t hesitate to ask them for any clarification if you need it.

Step 2 Find out the speaker’s topic and who their audience is.

  • For example, if the speech is about encouraging young girls to learn computer programming, don’t spend time explaining how the speaker can teach these skills to adults.
  • Additionally, if the audience is mostly people who work in the education field rather than computer programming, avoid using a lot of jargon specific to computer programming so the audience can follow along better.

Step 3 Gather biographical information about the speaker.

  • Another method is to ask the speaker for their resume. Use this to pick out their most notable achievements to help establish their credibility.
  • A good introduction goes beyond just reciting the speaker’s personal history. However, noting their most relevant and impressive achievements will help establish them as an authoritative figure to the audience.

Step 4 Avoid using sensitive or embarrassing information without approval.

  • Always get the speaker’s permission before using these details. If you need to use this information, have an explanation ready as to why it’s important to your introduction.

Step 5 Find other speeches the speaker has given.

  • Be careful if you’re using pieces from another speech since it is copyrighted material and can’t be used without the speaker’s permission. Talk directly to the speaker about using these portions, or rephrase the section in your own words.

Step 6 Include a surprising detail if it works in your intro.

  • “Many don’t know that John Doe originally went to school for law, but ended up choosing psychology instead. Just like many of you, he didn’t have much of an idea of where his life would take him. Little did he know that his legal studies would actually help him to become one of the most renowned therapists we know today.”

Step 7 Master pronouncing the speaker’s name.

  • Avoid using overly casual language to refer to the speaker, such as “guy,” “girl,” or “kid.” Instead, use “person,” “woman,” or “man.”

Step 1 Keep the introduction under 1 minute.

  • “Jane’s passion for creative writing goes back to her high school days where she began the draft for her very first novel at the age of 15. By the time she was entering her sophomore year of college at 19 years old, she had already published her first book.”
  • “John has received recognition and praise from some of the largest Fortune 500 companies for his dedication to creating curriculums to help strengthen teamwork in the workplace. He’s received multiple awards for his work and has even gone on to write a book sharing his unique insights and perspective.”

Step 3 Tell the audience what they’ll be learning from the speaker.

  • “Jane will tell you exactly how you can manifest every single one of your goals by making just five simple changes in your daily life.”
  • “John is here today to share the secret to maximizing your savings so you can live freely without ever having to worry about finances again.”

Step 4 Include a short personal anecdote if you have one.

  • “John and I met a few years back and immediately bonded over the struggle of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I’m sure many of us can relate to this.”
  • “Jane’s book on navigating childcare in our current economy struck me at a very deep level. I’ve never read such relatable and honest words, and her work has given me comfort and reassurance during these unpredictable times.”

Step 5 Focus more on the speaker’s credibility rather than humor.

  • For example, you might say, “John Smith’s story working in the lumber industry inspired me to go out and build a cabinet. Unsurprisingly, it fell apart within five minutes of being built. I went back to him, and he was sure to reassure me that it’s a practice that requires much patience.”

Step 6 Introduce the speaker’s name at the end.

  • “Please join me in welcoming Dr. John Smith!”
  • “Here to discuss her newest book, “How to Live a Happier Life,” please give a warm welcome to Jane Doe.”
  • “Here to share his unique perspective on the current political climate, please welcome Professor John Doe.”

Step 7 Read your speech aloud to catch any errors.

  • Also, practice using a friendly and relaxed tone when you give your speech to avoid coming off as super stiff and nervous.
  • To overcome stage fright , recite the introduction while looking in a mirror. Once you feel comfortable, rehearse it in front of family and friends.

Step 2 Rehearse the introduction sparingly before going on stage.

  • For example, “Good evening. My name is Alex Brown, and I’m the organizer of this event.”
  • If everyone in the audience is familiar with you, there’s no need to introduce yourself.

Step 4 Show lots of enthusiasm while speaking.

  • Get the speaker’s approval of the introduction you’ve written. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Forget about cliches such as “This person needs no introduction.” Instead, focus on making your introduction unique and descriptive. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Ask the speaker to revise a provided introduction if you don’t feel that it’s right for the audience they’ll be presenting to. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Welcome Speech for a Farewell Party

“I welcome you all on this occasion of the farewell party, for which we have assembled here today.

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Semisonic

First, I would like to thank everyone who gave me this opportunity to welcome all my seniors and teachers on this memorable occasion.

School life is undoubtedly the best phase of life for everyone. Our parents, teachers, and friends all made this phase of life so memorable for us. We learned so many things from our inspiring teachers, made mistakes, made memories with friends, and whatnot. It was a long journey in itself.

Today marks the end of this school life, a life of sweet and bitter moments to cherish all our lives. We do feel a touch of sadness, but it is the nature of life to move forward. So, today, we will celebrate this moment with our beloved teachers and friends to bid a good farewell to all who have to leave now, with a smiling face.”

Welcome Speech for College Function

Good Morning to all!

“Honourable Chief Guest Mr. XYZ, Principal Sir Dr. ABC, Staff Members, and all the students present here. I welcome you all to the annual function of our esteemed college.

My name is Lakshita Kumar. I am a B.Sc. student and the secretary of cultural programs organized under our college’s authority.

I feel extremely proud to announce that our elite college has completed 25 years and we all have gathered today to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the same. Behind huge success over the years are the dedicated teachers, motivated students, and helpful staff who give their best to make the college achieve great heights of success.

Also, It is a great honour for me to pronounce that today we are joined by a lady who hardly needs an introduction. She is well known for her work in educating poor children. Besides, he is a published and extensively read contemporary world author. (the title of his book) is one of her treasures that has gained a huge international acknowledgment.

Moreover, she is extremely loved and respected by her readers, including the country’s youth population, whom she has influenced the most with her writing. That said, let us call upon none other than Miss/ Mrs. (name of the chief guest).”

Welcome Speech for Teachers Day

Respected Principal, Sir, Teachers, and dear students!

speech-teacher's-day

“We welcome you all today to celebrate this auspicious occasion of Teacher’s Day. We celebrate Teacher’s day every year on 5 September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

“Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.”  Aristotle

This quotation cannot be more true! Teachers are parents to children when needed. They light us up and lead us through the pathway of life. They seek nothing but respect in return for their persistent efforts to give their best.

Teachers are our ideals. They inspire us each day and make us strive towards success. They equip us with the power of knowledge and propel us with endless wisdom to become better future citizens.

On that note, I would like to invite our Principal mam on the stage and deliver her thoughts on the day”.

Welcome Speech for Children’s Day

Good Morning Everyone!

“We welcome all the students as we celebrate Children’s Day today.

“There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” Walt Streightiff

It is true the imagination of a child is incomparable. Children are a creation of God, and their smile is irresistible not to make us smile alone. Their innocence is overwhelming.

We celebrate Children’s Day every year on 14th November in memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a great admirer of children. We celebrate this day on his birth anniversary.

School is a second home for children, and teachers are equivalent to the parents when students need them the most. This day is celebrated with many events, which cannot be possible without the contribution of our lovely teachers.

Thanking you all, I would like to start the day’s events without further delay”.

Deliver a Welcome Speech

By going though this article you will be able to know about what is a Welcome, how to write an effective welcome speech, how to be prepared and have much confidence, characteristics of a gracious welcome speech , and how to start a welcome speech.

What is a Welcome?

A welcome is an instance or manner to greet someone and a welcome speech does the same. It is a gesture to greet arrival of guest/s on various occasions or places. The regular welcome could be just exchange of greetings or could also be in the form of some gestures. For Ex- visitors to an amusement park are welcomed at the main gate by employees dressed up in different costumes and waving at them, customers in an eatery are welcomed by the polite smile of the manager saying ‘welcome’, airlines staff welcome the passengers with a folded hands etc.

How To Write An Effective Welcome Speech?

A welcome speech might be given on a variety of events like- opening of a new school, office, hotel or any commercial or public place; where there is a need to welcome the guests, informing them about the occasion and its purpose. Welcome speech conveys the message that how important the guests are to you and to your cause as well.

Now, to write an effective welcome speech you must know the sentiments of your subject as well as the sentiments of your audience. A welcome speech can also be broken up in three parts- introduction, main body and conclusion, like the farewell speech.

Below given is an explanation on how to write an effective welcome speech, to help you prepare speech for events at your school and society. After going through the content you will be able to write an effective welcome speech and earn accolades by your family and friends-

I Introduction

The Introduction of a Welcome speech can be divided into two parts as described below-

The first rule of a welcome speech is to welcome the audience first. Start your speech with- ‘Good evening ladies and gentlemen, hi everybody etc. If you are speaking on the opening ceremony of hotel, office, hospital etc, then the audience is also your guest and must be welcomed. Next, if there is a chief guest of the occasion then he or she must be welcomed and introduced to the audience. You may ask the audience to greet the chief guest or welcome speech for chief guest by a big round of applause. You may include phrases like- “audience please welcome Mr. X by a huge round of applause or “we are thankful to Mr. X for joining us today” etc.

The Introduction of your welcome speech should be short and effective welcoming the audience and the subject, thanking them both for their time and presence.

II Main Body of the Speech

This is the main part of the speech, where the audience gets to know the purpose of the event and is informed more about the subject. If the reason for the event is opening of a house, office or any commercial establishment, then the audience is informed about the purpose of it and how both are mutually beneficial to each other. Whatever the purpose it has to serve, a welcome speech must have the following characteristics-

1) Polite and Humble

The speech should be conducted in a polite and humble manner. Whatever you write in your speech or say, must be pleasing to the ears and sound generous.

2) True Facts and Figures

The facts that you present to your audience about the chief guest or the reason for the event, must be true to the core. Any exaggeration of any person, place or thing must be avoided at all cost.

3) Inform The Chief Guest

The Chief Guest is also informed about the purpose of the event and is introduced to other dignitaries present and other distinguished personalities. Inform the chief guest personally about the event and its purpose.

4) Introduce more

Let the audience know the event, purpose, occasion, chief guest- the more you inform your audience the more effective the speech will be. If it is a special guest for whom you are giving the speech, then inform the audience about his/her achievements, the distinctions they hold in the society and how grateful we all are to him/her for taking their precious time for the occasion.

5) Add some humor

If you have a humorous incident or event in mind, which fits in the occasion and is appropriate- go ahead! Adding a little humor will make the situation lighter and more rememberable.

How to be Prepared and have Much Confidence?

The following points must be stressed upon in order to prepare oneself for a farewell speech. They include some effective ways that you could use to deliver your fare well speech. After going through it you will know how to prepare for an effective Farewell speech as well as how to have much confidence-

  • Know your audience and chief guest advance.
  • Understand the purpose of the event.
  • Gather information about the chief guest from other sources.
  • Know his status, achievements and capacities and capabilities.
  • Prepare an effective welcome speech.
  • Make the speech concise and compact by removing unnecessary sentences.
  • Rehearse the speech in a loud voice, better if in front of a mirror.
  • Rehearse using appropriate gestures as you would do in actual speech.
  • Ask your parents or friends to be the audience/chief guest and rehearse in front of them.
  • Work on the feedback given by your family and friends and work on your weak points.
  • Arrive to the event before time.
  • Make yourself comfortable with the surroundings.
  • Socialize and speak your heart out before the speech.
  • Put more emphasis on your facial expressions i.e. smile only when it’s required.
  • Feel confident or at least pretend to be confident even if you are nervous. Nobody can guess unless you show your nervousness.
  • Make direct eye contact with your audience and the chief guest.
  • Add some last moment incident or a joke if it fits well.
  • Don’t fight your fear, just ignore it. Fighting is a waste of time.

If you are getting nervous then going through the following lines will sure boost up your confidence-

  • Even experienced speakers get nervous at some point of time.
  • They don’t know it, so don’t show it.
  • Audience or the other dignitaries are listening to you, not judging you.

Nervousness has a habit of revealing itself through the following-

1) Through your eyes

Avoiding direct eye contact with the audiences or the chief guests shows that you are nervous. So, don’t hesitate to make direct eye contact.

2) Through facial gestures

Avoid unnecessary facial gestures, especially smiles. Smiling without reason is an indication of your nervousness. Smile only when necessary.

3) Through Unwanted Hand Gestures

Avoid unnecessary gestures and use only appropriate hand gestures.

Characteristics of a Gracious Welcome Speech

A gracious fare welcome speech must have following characteristics.

1) Be polite and courteous

2) Welcome all the guests and dignitaries with enthusiasm.

3) Introduce the dignitaries to the audiences.

4) Share the distinct qualities of the chief guest with the audience.

5) A little humor would be great if it fits in the occasion.

6) Make everyone present feel special

7) Rightly time your speech. Not too short neither too long.

8) Use appropriate hand and facial gestures, only if required.

9) Narrate the qualities and achievements of chief guest to the audience

10) Acknowledge your audience and dignitaries for their time and presence.

11) Once again thank the audience and chief guest present.

12) Introduce the next speaker to the audience.

How To start A Welcome Speech?

A great welcome speech is started by welcoming the Greeting audience and the chief guest of the occasion. The chief guest and the other dignitaries present must be welcomed individually by calling out their respective names and designations.

Below we are providing a few opening sentences for your welcome speech on events in your schools and colleges.

First Welcome the Audience

The audience present at the venue must be welcomed, using the phrases like-

  • Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I/we thank you all for your presence and time.
  • Good evening ladies and gentlemen, it is a pleasure to have you all here.
  • Good evening ladies and gentle men first let me introduce myself. I am … I thank you all for taking out your precious time for the occasion.

Then Welcome The Guests

Once you are done with welcoming the audience, it’s time to move on to the chief guest and other dignitaries. It should be kept in mind that the chief guest and other special guests are to welcomed individually by the speaker, also on behalf of the audience. For Ex-

  • I take this opportunity to introduce you to Mr. X (chief guest) and also request you (the audience) to welcome him with a huge round of applause. I would also like to introduce you to Mr. Y (Name and designation), Mr. Z (Name and Designation) and once again request you all to welcome them with a huge round of applause.
  • I feel proud to introduce you to Mr. X (chief guest) and also request you (the audience) to welcome him and all other dignitaries present, with a huge round of applause. I would also like to thank Mr. Y (Name and designation), Mr. Z (Name and Designation) for taking out their precious time for the event and make it more memorable. A huge round of applause for them, Ladies and Gentle men!

An effective welcome speech addresses all present in a very polite way, making them feel important and by admiring their presence. Whether the speech welcomes a single person or a group; it should be framed to honor them and also to inform them about the occasion, event or function. I am confident that after thoroughly going through the article, you would be able to write an impressive welcome speech, practice it and also deliver it with confidence.

Address by the Chief Guest

Lila h. mkila, deputy governor for financial stability and deepening, bank of tanzania.

It is an honor and a great pleasure to be here to share this important occasion with you.

First, I would like to congratulate each and every graduand. This is a defining moment for all of you. It is a day of a celebration – a day when you look back on the many challenges you have overcome, and look forward to those that lie ahead, knowing that you have the skills and knowledge needed to meet them. It is a day that you never forget.

I remember my own graduation quite well, and I can assure you that I could not have guessed I would go on to my current position as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania. No doubt the time will come in your own careers when you think back to today and are amazed at how far you have travelled, and how much you have achieved. That is the power of a great education: by turning you into a lifelong learner, it makes it possible to adapt, to grow and to do what you once would have thought inconceivable.

Graduands, I know that you have made many sacrifices in order to earn your degrees. But I believe it is important on this occasion to recognize not only your own efforts but the efforts of those who have supported you on your journeys. I have in mind your family members. The opportunity to pursue higher education rarely comes without a cost to the student’s family – whether that cost be financial, or whether it involves sacrifices of time, or the accumulation of responsibilities that allow the learner to focus on his or her studies.

Similarly, I would note that none of us would be here today were it not for the faculty and staff of the University. You too should feel proud today.

Ladies and gentlemen, the importance of higher education to the future of Tanzania and the rest of East Africa can hardly be overstated. In 2007, shortly before he became Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Dr. Benno Ndulu authored a report with several colleagues at the World Bank on “The Challenges of African Growth.” [ https://tinyurl.com/hha52em ]

The report identified four areas where investment was critical to accelerating economic growth and improving people’s well-being. One of them was innovation, and within that area, higher education was identified as especially important. In its essence, the argument was simple: the more educated and skilled a person, the more productive and innovative they tend to be, and hence the greater their contribution to economic growth.

The amount of knowledge and technology that we can draw upon today in order to solve the many challenges we face is staggering. The smartphones we carry in our pockets are more powerful devices than the supercomputers that were in use when I was studying for my MBA.

Yet we still face a dilemma: if we don’t have enough people to act on the basis of that knowledge, or to use that technology, very little will change. As Dr. Ndulu’s report stated: “Like a big book in the sky, technological knowledge and inventions are a global public good. But one can only use them if one can reach the book, turn the pages and read from it.”

Hence, the report called for an expansion in university enrollment (and, interestingly, it cited former AKU Trustee Calestous Juma!). And it urged that the growth in the number of private universities continue.

Graduands, you are the kinds of individuals that Dr. Ndulu’s report envisioned: those who have the ability not only to turn the pages of that big book in the sky, but to add a chapter to it of your own, which others might learn from and put to good use.

And, similarly, the Aga Khan University is the kind of institution we need more of: globally connected, focused on quality and striving to make a difference in people’s lives. When I think of what AKU has accomplished and invested in Tanzania – and the fact that it plans to invest even more – I think we are quite lucky. That commitment shows great faith in our country and its future.

Above all, though, graduands – we need you. We need every one of you, and all of your energy, passion and talent. As nurses, doctors and teachers, you are some of the most valuable professionals that we have.

To those of you who are educators: the future is quite literally in your hands. We will be counting on you to develop the future scientists, engineers, economists, lawyers, writers, artists, entrepreneurs, policymakers and politicians that we need. It is a weighty responsibility that rests on your shoulders. But I have no doubt that you are equal to the task. You would not be sitting here today if that were not the case.

To those of you who are doctors and nurses: we need you not only to heal the sick who present themselves to you, but – as you have learned in your time at AKU – to educate the public so that people can avoid illness in the first place. If you can do that, the contribution you will make will be truly enormous.

“Education,” Nelson Mandela famously said, “is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Now it is up to you to prove to it.

Congratulations again, and God bless you!

Chief Guest vs. Guest of Honor

What's the difference.

The terms "Chief Guest" and "Guest of Honor" are often used interchangeably, but they do have slight differences in their meanings. A Chief Guest is typically someone who holds a high position or authority, such as a government official, renowned personality, or a distinguished individual in a particular field. They are invited to an event to grace it with their presence and often deliver a keynote speech or address. On the other hand, a Guest of Honor is someone who is given special recognition or respect at an event due to their achievements, contributions, or significance in a specific context. While both Chief Guests and Guests of Honor are esteemed individuals, the former usually holds a higher position or authority, while the latter is recognized for their accomplishments or importance in a particular field.

Further Detail

Introduction.

When it comes to special events and ceremonies, having distinguished individuals in attendance adds a touch of prestige and importance. Two common titles given to such individuals are Chief Guest and Guest of Honor. While both hold significant positions, there are subtle differences in their attributes and roles. In this article, we will explore and compare the attributes of Chief Guest and Guest of Honor, shedding light on their respective roles and responsibilities.

Chief Guest

A Chief Guest is typically an individual who holds a high-ranking position or has achieved notable success in their field. They are invited to an event or ceremony to grace it with their presence and share their wisdom and experiences with the audience. The role of a Chief Guest is often associated with inaugurating or presiding over the event, delivering a keynote address, and presenting awards or honors to deserving individuals. Their presence adds a sense of importance and authority to the occasion.

One of the key attributes of a Chief Guest is their ability to inspire and motivate the audience. They are often chosen based on their accomplishments and the impact they have made in their respective fields. Their speeches are expected to be insightful, thought-provoking, and filled with valuable advice. Chief Guests are also expected to interact with the attendees, engaging in conversations and answering questions, thereby leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

Another important attribute of a Chief Guest is their ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. They should possess excellent communication skills and be able to convey their message effectively to a wide range of individuals. Chief Guests are often seen as role models, and their presence can have a profound impact on the attendees, inspiring them to strive for excellence and achieve their goals.

Furthermore, a Chief Guest should have a charismatic personality and a commanding presence. They should be able to captivate the audience with their words and gestures, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present. Their mere presence should exude confidence and authority, making them a symbol of respect and admiration.

In summary, the attributes of a Chief Guest include their high-ranking position or notable achievements, their ability to inspire and motivate, their skill in connecting with diverse audiences, and their charismatic personality and commanding presence.

Guest of Honor

A Guest of Honor, similar to a Chief Guest, is an individual who is invited to an event or ceremony due to their distinguished position or achievements. However, the role and responsibilities of a Guest of Honor differ slightly from those of a Chief Guest. While a Chief Guest often presides over the event and delivers a keynote address, a Guest of Honor is primarily recognized and honored for their contributions in a specific field or for their support of the event or organization.

One of the key attributes of a Guest of Honor is their expertise and knowledge in a particular domain. They are often invited to share their insights and experiences related to the event's theme or purpose. Their presence adds credibility and authenticity to the occasion, as they are recognized as experts in their respective fields.

Unlike a Chief Guest, a Guest of Honor may not have the same level of authority or command over the event. However, they are still expected to engage with the attendees and deliver a speech or address that is relevant and impactful. Their role is to inspire and educate the audience, sharing their unique perspectives and experiences.

Another important attribute of a Guest of Honor is their ability to foster connections and build relationships. They are often seen as approachable and friendly, making them more accessible to the attendees. Guests of Honor are expected to interact with the audience, engaging in conversations, and networking with individuals who share similar interests or aspirations.

Furthermore, a Guest of Honor should possess humility and gratitude. They should acknowledge the recognition they receive and express their appreciation for being invited to the event. Their humility adds a touch of warmth and sincerity to the occasion, making them relatable and endearing to the attendees.

In summary, the attributes of a Guest of Honor include their expertise and knowledge in a specific domain, their ability to inspire and educate, their skill in fostering connections and building relationships, and their humility and gratitude.

While both Chief Guests and Guests of Honor hold significant positions and are invited to events and ceremonies due to their distinguished achievements, there are subtle differences in their attributes and roles. A Chief Guest is often associated with inaugurating or presiding over the event, delivering a keynote address, and presenting awards, while a Guest of Honor is primarily recognized and honored for their contributions in a specific field or for their support of the event. Both play crucial roles in adding prestige and importance to the occasion, inspiring and motivating the audience, and leaving a lasting impact on everyone present.
