How to Write a Critical Review of a Movie in APA
Yashekia king.
![apa format movie review Writing a movie critique in APA style takes concentration.](https://classroom.synonym.com/public/images/logo-fallback.png)
Writing a movie critique gives you the opportunity to explain why a movie was done well or poorly. A critique not only can hone your writing skills but also boost your critical thinking and information gathering skills as well. APA style, or American Psychological Association style, is one of the most commonly accepted formats for writing these types of papers and is preferred in many of the social sciences.
Watch the movie on which you want to write a critical review in APA style. As you view the film, take notes of the various characters in the film and any special effects used. If the movie is based on real people and events, research this information in books at your local library or in online articles.
Write the introduction to your movie critique. Mention the name of the film, director, producer, top two or three stars and release date. Explain the purpose, or theme, of the film.
Indent the first line of the first paragraph and the first line of each subsequent paragraph in your critique half an inch from the left margin, according to APA style. Also, place just one space after each period, and do not put a space on either side of any dashes or hyphens.
Retell the movie’s plot in about five to eight sentences. Introduce the characters, including the protagonist -- the main character -- and the antagonist -- the person against which the protagonist is fighting. Explain what happens in the movie. Be succinct but give enough details so your readers will have a good idea of the storyline. Explain to your readers the purpose of your critique -- to show that the hero really is not a hero or that the storyline is good but the cinematography was poor, for example.
Explain why you felt the film was particularly good or missed the mark. This will be the body of your movie critique. For example, if the cinematography was poor, describe how the filmmaker inadequately used color, light, texture, time, space or camera angles to produce the atmosphere or mood of the movie’s storyline. Describe how the filmmaker could have developed the main character better if you felt the protagonist was not strong.
If the movie was based on reality, compare the film with the information you researched and mention whether the filmmaker treated the events and settings with historical accuracy. Explain whether the movie reached a logical climax and resolution or if the plot was too fast or too slow. Describe what would have made the film better. The body of the critique should be about two to three paragraphs.
Cite any outside sources in your critique by italicizing or underlining the titles of longer works and putting quotation marks around the titles of shorter works such as journal articles.
Write the conclusion paragraph to your movie critique. Mention whether you would recommend the movie to a friend and what you gained or lost by viewing the movie.
Go over your movie critique for spelling and grammar errors. Double-space your movie review according to APA guidelines, and be sure your word processing document has 1-inch margins. Keep the font size at 10 to 12 and the font in Times New Roman. Place page numbers flush right at the top of every page.

How to Cite a Movie in APA
Movies are a great source of information for many different types of papers. In this guide, you will learn how to write citations for various types of movies using APA 7th edition format.
Guide Overview
In this guide, you will find the following information:
Citing a movie
Citing a movie in another language, troubleshooting.
It doesn’t matter how you watched the movie (e.g., DVD, on a streaming service, in the theater, etc.), you cite all movies the same way as shown below.
APA movie citation structure:
Director Last Name, F.M. (Director). (Release Year). Title of motion picture [Film]. Studio.
Note: If you cannot locate certain bibliographic data from the film’s cover, consult IMDB.com or a similar website.
![apa format movie review Screen Shot 2014-04-02 at 4.08.29 PM](https://www.easybib.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Screen-Shot-2014-04-02-at-4.08.29-PM.webp)
APA movie citation example:
Ayoade, R. (Director). (2011). Submarine [Film]. Film4 Productions.
In-text citations for movies
Parenthetical citation: (Ayoade, 2011)
Narrative citations: Ayoade (2011)
Note: If no director cannot be identified, someone in a similar role can be credited in the director’s place as the author.
When a film is in another language, simply include the translation in brackets after its original title. If the film’s title is in a language that does not use the Roman alphabet, transliterate the title.
Last name, F. M. (Director). (Year of release). Original title in sentence case [Translated in title case] [Film]. Studio.
Derbez, E. (Director). (2013). No se aceptan devoluciones [Instructions not included] [Film]. Pantelion Films.
Structure: (Last name, date, timestamp [hour: minute: second])
Parenthetical citation: (Derbez, 2013, 1:15:38)
Narrative citations: Derbez (2013, 1:15:38)
Solution #1: Specifying editions of a movie
While you do not need to specify how you watched a movie, it is sometimes necessary to include the version or edition of the film in brackets next to the word “Film.”
Structure & Example:
Director Last Name, F. M. (Director). (Release Year). Title of motion picture [Film; Edition description]. Studio.
Lucas, G. (Director). (1983). Star wars episode V: The empire strikes back [Film; widescreen 2-disc special edition]. 20th Century Fox.

Streaming video from a subscription media website (netflix, amazon prime, hulu, etc.), streaming video from a library database, television series episode.
Note: All citations should be double spaced and have a hanging indent in a Reference List.
A "hanging indent" means that each subsequent line after the first line of your citation should be indented by 0.5 inches.
This Microsoft support page contains instructions about how to format a hanging indent in a paper.
Who to Credit - Film or Video
The director should be credited as the author of a film. If the director is unknown, someone in a similar role, such as a producer and/or writer, can be credited. To clarify what role the person has in the production, their job title such as Director is put after their name in round brackets if the job title is known.
Who to Credit - Streaming Video from a Website
For videos from websites such as YouTube or Vimeo, credit the person who posted the content. If a real name is provided, use that followed by the person's user name in square brackets. If the real name of the person who posted the content is not known, just use their user name without brackets.
Note : It is not necessary to specify how you watched a film or video (e.g. motion picture, DVD, streaming online).
In the Body of a Paper
Books, Journals, Reports, Webpages, etc.: When you refer to titles of a “stand-alone work,” as the APA calls them on their APA Style website, such as books, journals, reports, and webpages, you should italicize them. Capitalize words as you would for an article title in a reference, e.g., In the book Crying in H Mart: A memoir , author Michelle Zauner (2021) describes her biracial origin and its impact on her identity.
Article or Chapter: When you refer to the title of a part of a work, such as an article or a chapter, put quotation marks around the title and capitalize it as you would for a journal title in a reference, e.g., In the chapter “Where’s the Wine,” Zauner (2021) describes how she decided to become a musician.
The APA Sample Paper below has more information about formatting your paper.

How to Cite a Review in APA Referencing
- 2-minute read
- 8th November 2020
Reviews of books, films, and other media can be great sources in academic writing. But how do you cite a review using APA referencing ? In this post, we explain the basics of citations and the reference list entry.
In-Text Citations for a Review in APA Style
Citations for a review in APA referencing are similar to those for other sources. This means you cite the reviewer’s surname and year of publication:
One review was especially scathing (Smith, 2001).
In addition, if you quote a print source, make sure to cite a page number:
Smith (2001) dismisses the argument as “puerile” (p. 16).
For more on APA citations, see our blog post on the topic .
Reviews in an APA Reference List
The format for a review in an APA reference list will depend on where it was published. For instance, for a review published in a newspaper, you would cite it as a newspaper article . But for a review published on a blog or website, you would cite it as a blog post or website instead.
Find this useful?
Subscribe to our newsletter and get writing tips from our editors straight to your inbox.
In all cases, though, you will need to adapt the format by adding details of the thing being reviewed in square brackets after the review title.
You can see APA-style references for reviews from an academic journal and a website below, complete with this extra information:
Smith, G. (2001). A backward step for applied ethics [Review of the book Righteous Thought, Righteous Action , by X. Morrison]. Journal of Applied Philosophy , 18(1), 16–24.
Bert, E. (2018). Neil Breen outdoes himself again [Review of the film Twisted Pair , by N. Breen, Dir.]. BadMovieCentral. http://www.badmoviecentral.com/reviews/twisted-pair/
This ensures the reader can identify both the review you’re citing and the thing being reviewed from the reference list entry alone.

Formatting a Film Analysis in APA Style: A Comprehensive Guide
Feb 7, 2024
Avinash Prabhakaran
When it comes to writing a film analysis paper, adhering to a specific formatting style is crucial to maintaining consistency and professionalism in your work.
The American Psychological Association (APA) style is commonly used in academic writing and research papers, and it provides guidelines for formatting various types of documents, including film analyses.
In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps to format your film analysis effectively in APA style.
The title page is the first element of your film analysis paper, and it should include the following information:
Title of your paper: This should be concise and informative.
Your name: Include your full name.
Institutional affiliation: Mention your university or institution.
Course information: Include the course name and number.
Instructor's name: Write your instructor's name.
Submission date: Specify the date of submission.
Ensure that all the elements are centered, double-spaced, and formatted in Times New Roman 12-point font.
An abstract is a brief summary of your film analysis paper, usually consisting of 150-250 words. It should provide a concise overview of your paper's main points, including the film's title, director, your thesis statement, and the key arguments you will make. The abstract should be placed on a separate page immediately following the title page.
Page Layout and Formatting
Use 1-inch margins on all sides of the paper.
Use 12-point Times New Roman font throughout the paper.
Double-space the entire paper, including the title page, abstract, main text, and references.
In an APA-formatted film analysis, you may need to use headings to effectively organize your paper's content. Use bold, centered headings to distinguish different sections. APA style provides guidelines for five levels of headings:
Level 1: Centered, bold, title case (e.g., Introduction).
Level 2: Left-aligned, bold, title case (e.g., Film Synopsis).
Level 3: Indented, bold, sentence case (e.g., Analysis of Characters).
Level 4: Indented, bold, italicized, sentence case (e.g., Symbolism in the Film).
Level 5: Indented, italicized, sentence case, ending with a period. Only the first letter of the first word is capitalized (e.g., the film's emotional impact).
In-Text Citations
Use in-text citations when referencing specific scenes, dialogues, or ideas from the film within your paper. For films, you should include the director's name and the year of release in parentheses, like this: (Director's Last Name, Year). For example: (Spielberg, 1993).
The references page lists all the sources you've cited in your film analysis. When referencing a film, follow this format:
Director's Last Name, Director's Initials (Director). (Year). Title of the film [Film]. Production Company.
For example:
Spielberg, S. (1993). Jurassic Park [Film]. Universal Pictures.
Make sure to list your sources alphabetically by the director's last name. Use hanging indentation for the reference entries, where the first line is flush with the left margin, and subsequent lines are indented.
Formatting your film analysis paper in APA style is essential for presenting your work clearly, organized, and academically acceptedly.
By following the guidelines in this blog post, you can ensure that your film analysis adheres to APA style conventions, making it more accessible to readers and enhancing its overall quality and professionalism.
Remember to consult the latest APA manual or style guide for any updates or specific details not covered here. Good luck with your film analysis!

An in-text citation in APA, in general, includes only the surname(s) of the author(s) and the publication year. The author, or contributor, of an audiovisual work depends on the type of medium. For a film, the name of the director should be used in the author’s place. Therefore, to cite a film in the text, you need to include the director’s surname and the publication year. It is not necessary to include the film name in in-text citations.
Below you will find templates and examples of how to format an in-text citation for a film in APA style.
Narrative: Director’s Surname (Year)
Parenthetical: (Director’s Surname, Year)
Narrative: Cameron (1997)
Parenthetical: (Cameron, 1997)
For an in-text citation for a comment on YouTube, use the commenter’s name (their username or ideally, their real last name) and the year in which the comment was made.
(Last Name, Year)
(Username, Year)
(Dikshit, 2003)
(Angel CityGirl, 2022)
To provide a reference list entry for a film in APA style, use the director’s name, the year the film was released, the title of the film, and the production company. Use the following format to cite a film in a reference list in APA style:
Director’s Last Name, First Initial. (Director). (Year). Name of the film [Film]. Production Company Name.
Wheldon, J. (Director). (2012). The Avengers [Film]. Marvel Studios.
Per APA guidelines, when citing an entire YouTube channel, include the channel’s name and/or the name of the person who runs the channel, the channel’s URL, and a retrieval date for when the channel was accessed. Since the information on the channel may change, “n.d.” should be used in the date field. You should also include “YouTube channel” in square brackets following the name of the channel page you are citing.
The templates and examples below show how to cite a YouTube channel in a reference list in APA style.
Channel Name [Username (if different from channel name)]. (n.d.). Name of page/tab [YouTube channel]. YouTube. Retrieved Month Date, Year, from URL
Uploader’s Last Name, First Initial. [Username]. (n.d.). Name of page/tab [YouTube channel]. YouTube. Retrieved Month Date, Year, from URL

Citing a Movie in APA Style (6th Edition) | Format & Examples
Published on November 5, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on January 17, 2024.
To cite a movie in APA Style , list the film’s producer(s) and director as authors and the production studio as publisher. The title is written in sentence case and italicized, followed by the label “Motion picture” in square brackets.
The APA 6 in-text citation includes the last names of the producer(s) and the year. If you are referring to a specific quote or scene from the movie, add a timestamp to direct the reader to the relevant part.

Citing movies in different formats, where to find source information for a movie citation.
In general, you don’t need to specify the format in which you watched the film. However, if you are discussing a specific version of the film (for example, if you refer to the special features of a DVD), you can specify the version in the citation.
In these cases, the publication date is the release year of the specific version, not the general release:
Dempsey, C., Guiney, E., & Magiday, L. (Producers), & Lanthimos, Y. (Director & Producer). (2016). The lobster [Motion picture; DVD release ]. UK: Film4.
As in the above example, when the director is also a producer, this information should be included.
Movies on Netflix and other streaming services
You don’t usually need to state that a film was viewed on a particular streaming service (like Netflix or Hulu). Just follow the standard format without mentioning where you viewed the film.
However, if the film was also produced by a streaming company (e.g. a Netflix Original), you should replace the studio information with a URL linking to their site:
Johnson, M., Bernstein, M., Newirth, C., & Paul, A. (Producers), & Gilligan, V. (Director & Producer). (2019). El Camino: A breaking bad movie [Motion picture]. Retrieved from https://www.netflix.com

Quick Guide on How to Write a Movie Review Essay

What Is a Movie Review
The internet has revolutionized the realm of film criticism. No matter a movie's level of quality, it is always worth analyzing. Despite the growing number of individuals attempting to write about movies, few are successful. Most people do not provide insightful analysis, instead simply state how much they liked or disliked the film.
A movie criticism, usually composed by a professional in film studies, takes a comprehensive look at the film from a historical, social, political, or theoretical standpoint. This is unlike the opinion or suggestion given in a movie review, which is shorter and more concise.
A remarkable aspect of a good film review is that it doesn't just rate the movie but provides explicit views that form the critique's basis. This form of writing, like crafting essays, research papers, and term papers, should be insightful and draw the reader in quickly. It's important to discuss the reputation of the lead actors and directors and to write about what you expected and if they were met. The reviewer must explain a story's development without recalling major plot points and endings. The review must be concise, engaging, and should involve metaphors, specific words, analogies, etc.
Movie Review Purpose
Most film reviews are intended to guide readers in deciding whether to view, rent, or purchase the film. They should provide the necessary information to aid readers in deciding without divulging any fundamental details, such as the storyline or any surprises. This paper is common in schools because the lecturer wants to evaluate the student's ability to think critically and report the event easily for others to understand.
Movie reviews typically present a brief summary of the film's storyline. They provide readers with an overview of the characters, relationships, and scenarios but do not convey the complete narrative. Perusing the review should be different from seeing the movie. Nonetheless, feel free to highlight the essential moments or pivotal points that make the film worthwhile viewing.
Our college essay writing service has put together some advice on composing a movie review essay like a real critic, so let's explore the article further!
How to Write a Movie Review: Movie Review Outline
The structure is key when it comes to the quality of your paper. Don't neglect the power of a good outline, no matter what paper you're writing. Outlines help you stay on track and make sure your paper flows well.
Taking the time to arrange your ideas before starting to write is an effective way to save time further down the line. With a well-structured plan already in place, you won't have to worry about other elements. This will also make the writing process less stressful. Here is a guide on how to organize your movie review outline:
![apa format movie review Writing a Movie Review_ Step-by-Step Guide](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/5e5d43546b94f97f39c228fa/651285558dd6f9d7571ba9d0_How%20to%20Write%20a%20Movie%20Review_%20Writing%20a%20Movie%20Review_%20Step-by-Step%20Guide.webp)
How Do You Start a Movie Review Essay: Introduction
The introductory paragraph is the first obvious step in crafting a movie review essay outline. Here, you want to quickly captivate the reader. Deliver your viewpoint instantly and make it unambiguous. Don't leave the audience wondering whether you enjoyed the film. Tell them right off the bat so you have time to justify your assessment throughout the remainder of the process.
In the introduction movie review should also describe your thesis. Develop the main concept for your essay that you can support using your perceptions of the movie's various aspects. The reader should be able to tell from this statement if you thought the film was fantastic, awful, or simply alright. By including a thesis statement, you may move your analysis beyond the plot synopsis phase into the movie critique category, which is considered a separate creative process.
Crafting Your Essay Movie Review Analysis
According to our research paper service , film analysis is similar to building a case. You're attempting to influence the reader to follow your recommendation to watch or disregard the film. So, you must ensure your essay movie review will be convincing. Giving instances that demonstrate the validity of your personal opinion is the only method to do this. If you find any dialogue in the movie that you think best exemplifies whether the work is strong or not, utilize quotes. This also applies to all of the movie's artistic decisions. But, just because a movie's narrative isn't strong or engaging doesn't indicate the rest of the film is worthless. Carefully highlight how some factors might undermine the movie in your explanation.
The movie's plot is only one component and shouldn't dominate the overall piece. The following are the important aspects to include in your movie review structure:
Cinematography - Cinematography covers much more than simply camera angles. It includes how the picture is lit, how it moves, appears, and what lenses are used. Here you can try the following analysis: 'Warm, gentle colors are used throughout the film, combined with soothing whites and grays, to simultaneously create and gradually tear away the characters' romantic sentiments for one another. There is a painting-like quality to each image.'
Editing - The editing is arguably the absolute star of what creates a good movie review example. It affects both the duration and the flow of a movie. Without effective editing, there would be uncomfortable gaps between pictures and many errors.
Costuming - The clothing the characters wear is called a costume, but there are a number of things to consider while evaluating movie costumes. You should be able to decide if the outfits suit the characters and the movie's atmosphere.
Casting and Acting - Finding the ideal performers to bring characters to life is the goal of casting. This sometimes entails seeing performers portray both familiar personas and figures who are entirely at odds with who they are. Casting, therefore, involves more than just finding talented performers. You can assess the acting in the following way: 'Even though he excels while on the go, his stoic behaviorism causes him to fall short of his co-star during calm scenes where he keeps a blank look on his face.'
Once you have finished analyzing the acting, directing, cinematography, setting, etc., wrap up with concise, stimulating wording to sustain readers' attention. Don't forget to provide a few examples to support your statements about the film.
Concluding Your Essay Movie Review
Finalize your review by coming full circle. Close the review by returning to your introductory fact or thesis. Give your readers a refresher on the movie's most intriguing aspects. It's important to remember that before choosing a movie, viewers check reviews. Finish with a statement indicating whether it is worthwhile for them to view. Be specific about who this movie will be more fascinating to and why in your suggestions. Remember that your ending is your last shot at influencing your audience, so use it wisely.

- Add Your Own Personal Feel to Your Movie Critique - You might not have much spare time for your pastime of reviewing. You won't be able to write a movie review, though, if you just wing it without reading what others have said. Make a note of the things that intrigued you, alarmed you, made you uncomfortable, or caused you to pause and consider something, and then use that list as the basis for your research.
- Develop a Distinctive Writing Style - Have an idol—it's good for you. You must be careful not to just paraphrase and duplicate what they say without adding your own original viewpoint. Instead, in order to stand out from the throng, you must discover your own voice. When writing movie reviews, you should also have a distinct writing style.
- Include Extensive Information -Mention the film's photographer, special effects designer, and director. Your review might be significantly impacted by this. Then you may list all the memorable movie moments that also stuck with you.
- Voice Your Views and Back Up Your Criticism - Give your own assessment of the film. Make sure you have evidence to support your criticisms. Use the movie's details that most shocked or humiliated you. Review genuine information rather than merely expressing your opinions without supporting details.

Reference Examples
More than 100 reference examples and their corresponding in-text citations are presented in the seventh edition Publication Manual . Examples of the most common works that writers cite are provided on this page; additional examples are available in the Publication Manual .
To find the reference example you need, first select a category (e.g., periodicals) and then choose the appropriate type of work (e.g., journal article ) and follow the relevant example.
When selecting a category, use the webpages and websites category only when a work does not fit better within another category. For example, a report from a government website would use the reports category, whereas a page on a government website that is not a report or other work would use the webpages and websites category.
Also note that print and electronic references are largely the same. For example, to cite both print books and ebooks, use the books and reference works category and then choose the appropriate type of work (i.e., book ) and follow the relevant example (e.g., whole authored book ).
Examples on these pages illustrate the details of reference formats. We make every attempt to show examples that are in keeping with APA Style’s guiding principles of inclusivity and bias-free language. These examples are presented out of context only to demonstrate formatting issues (e.g., which elements to italicize, where punctuation is needed, placement of parentheses). References, including these examples, are not inherently endorsements for the ideas or content of the works themselves. An author may cite a work to support a statement or an idea, to critique that work, or for many other reasons. For more examples, see our sample papers .
Reference examples are covered in the seventh edition APA Style manuals in the Publication Manual Chapter 10 and the Concise Guide Chapter 10

🤔 What is an APA Citation Generator?
An APA citation generator is a software tool that will automatically format academic citations in the American Psychological Association (APA) style.
It will usually request vital details about a source -- like the authors, title, and publish date -- and will output these details with the correct punctuation and layout required by the official APA style guide.
Formatted citations created by a generator can be copied into the bibliography of an academic paper as a way to give credit to the sources referenced in the main body of the paper.
👩🎓 Who uses an APA Citation Generator?
College-level and post-graduate students are most likely to use an APA citation generator, because APA style is the most favored style at these learning levels. Before college, in middle and high school, MLA style is more likely to be used. In other parts of the world styles such as Harvard (UK and Australia) and DIN 1505 (Europe) are used more often.
🙌 Why should I use a Citation Generator?
Like almost every other citation style, APA style can be cryptic and hard to understand when formatting citations. Citations can take an unreasonable amount of time to format manually, and it is easy to accidentally include errors. By using a citation generator to do this work you will:
- Save a considerable amount of time
- Ensure that your citations are consistent and formatted correctly
- Be rewarded with a higher grade
In academia, bibliographies are graded on their accuracy against the official APA rulebook, so it is important for students to ensure their citations are formatted correctly. Special attention should also be given to ensure the entire document (including main body) is structured according to the APA guidelines. Our complete APA format guide has everything you need know to make sure you get it right (including examples and diagrams).
